In a span of four years, SB19 went from near disbandment to being one of the top OPM artists of the new generation. The group has undeniably helped bring P-pop to the forefront as one of the more popular music genres today. Along the way, the group has attracted hundreds of thousands of fans in the family called A’TIN. And SB19 can include these celebrities in their roster of fans. Whether it be their songs, charms, achievements, and the like, these celebs have at one point or another professed their fondness for the group. Who says you can’t be a fan of someone even if you are famous? Certainly not these celebrities. Here are a few local stars who consider themselves fans of SB19 and who their biases are.

JANE DE LEON

The new Darna is a Mahalima? You got that right, and she’s also Ken biased. A few weeks ago, Jane tweeted that she regretted missing ITZY and SB19’s concerts. She then expounded on that love in a recent interview with Rappler where she said that Ken was the first member that caught her attention though she does have love for all the members. And if that wasn’t enough, Jane even said that she tries to get other people to listen to SB19. We love a proud A’Tin.

AC BONIFACIO

Dancer, YouTuber, and actress AC Bonifacio is a vocal fan of SB19. She has on multiple occasions expressed her admiration and support for the group. She expressed her amazement when she watched their What? music video. AC actually enjoys a good friendship with the group and has met the boys. She posted a few videos of her dancing together with some of the members. In fact, she even officially collaborated and worked with the band. During YouTube Fanfest 2021, she joined SB19 for their performance of Bazinga where she did the second rap. She also appeared and danced with them for a commercial for Dunkin Donuts.

ANNE CURTIS

MAPA stands out as one of SB19’s best ballads and even best songs. The emotional track is an homage to their parents and is easily relatable to anyone who misses their family. Anne Curtis herself knows first-hand the power MAPA has as she recently tweeted about it. The actress, host, and occasional singer shared that she just heard MAPA for the first time said that it hit close to home. She even talked about the band version of MAPA and thanked SB19 and Ben&Ben for the song as she was missing her parents.

BEN&BEN

Ben&Ben are big fans of SB19 and it’s clear the feeling is mutual. When What? was released, Miguel Benjamin tweeted about how he liked the music video of the song and how inspiring they were. SB19, in turn, has expressed how they would like to collab with Ben&Ben on a song. Many prayers were then answered when SB19 and Ben&Ben came together for the band version of MAPA. Of course, SB19 also collaborated with Ben&Ben on their album Kuwaderno in the song Kapangyarihan. Bands supporting bands, we love to see it.

GRETCHEN HO

The celeb fandom of SB19 isn’t just limited to musicians and actors, even sports figure have expressed their support for the group. One such supporter is former volleyball player, host, and sports news anchor Gretchen Ho. Among other things, Gretchen tweeted about the release of What?. She also congratulated the group when they were nominated for Top Social Act at the 2021 BBMAs. She even went as far as to have her co-anchor Roby Alampay listen to What? after they reported on the news of their BBMAs nomination.

JAYDA

From one music star to another, rising musician Jayda also considers herself a fan of the boys. She has been open about her stanning of SB19 in the past. And she even got to experience a fangirl moment by working with them for a commercial for Pepsi (including hugging her bias Justin).

LIZA SOBERANO

It’s been well-documented that Liza is a big fan of K-Pop. But she has also shown her love and support to the local boy groups as well, most notably with SB19. When the group was nominated for Top Social Act, Liza took to Twitter to vote for them herself and asked others to do the same. But it didn’t stop there and Liza took things a step further. Using her official YouTube account, Liza commented on a fan video of the group. The video in question was about SB19 moments that were painful to watch. Liza took issue with a clip during SB19’s Go Up press con and the insensitive comments of the press. “Sobrang insensitive naman ng pagkakatanong,” she wrote.

MARIS RACAL

Given how Maris Racal and SB19 are under the same label, it’s not out of this world for the two of them to collab. In fact, this is something that Maris has been dreaming of. During an interview as she was promoting her single Ate Sandali, Maris revealed that SB19 was her number one collab. She shared a story of how she met them backstage at an event and asked if they write their own songs. When they said yes, Maris found it cool and at the back of her head, wanted to ask them to do a collab. Fingers crossed that this dream collab between Maris and SB19 comes true.

MOIRA DELA TORRE

OPM superstar Moira Dela Torre has on multiple occasions shown her support of the group. She lauded SB19 when they released the What? music video by writing “world class” in the comments section. Moira also liked a tweet about Justin doing a cover of her song Patawad, Paalam. She even gave love to the group in seemingly random moments. The only thing we need now is the SB19 x Moira Dela Torre collab to finally happen.

RYZZA MAE DIZON

When SB19 had a guesting on Eat Bulaga in September 2022, it wasn’t just the dabarkads in the studio who got excited. It was also Ryzza Made Dizon who practically went into fangirl mode. Ryzza Mae, along with Yohan Agoncillo, are fans of the boys. So, when they visited Eat Bulaga, the duo got their whole A’TIN life which Ryzza was kind enough to document for a YouTube video.

VICE GANDA

Vice Ganda isn’t just a fan of SB19. You could say he is a stan and a genuine A’TIN. Vice’s interactions with the group go as far back as 2019 when he had the boys perform in Gandang Gabi Vice, back when they were still relatively unknown. On multiple occasions, Vice Ganda has expressed how he likes many of their songs, including MAPA and What?. On the noontime show, It’s Showtime, he expressed how he would want the boys to come visit them again and has even went on Twitter to vote for the group for the BBMAs.

Tech Is the New Wave In Fashion: We Made a Styling Guide for Both You and Your Phone

line

Add a new youthful and elegant dimension to your fashion in this handy style guide with Liza Soberano and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G

Have you ever found yourself stuck in front of the mirror mixing and matching accessories laid out on your bed, or even hot-swapping jackets and caps just to see what fits? More than your tops, bottoms, and shoes, everything else surrounding your outfit plays a vital role in self-expression. Got a full leather jacket or a pair of aviators? People might see you as a bit of a rocker. If you like to keep it simple with just a designer timepiece on your wrist, that will give off a totally different vibe. Coordinating these accessories matters, especially when you consider the items you might be taking for granted, like your smartphone.

The future of fashion includes our gadgets, and this is especially true with the eye-catching Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. It’s the definition of a phone for the modern trendsetter, carrying both an industry-leading tech and an unmatched expression through unique form and colors. We’ve created a quick styling guide that plays with the phone’s four colors you can consider when creating your next fit and finding what fits you.

Lavender and Green: Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice

For a color that truly stands out from the selection, the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G in Lavender is both youthful and vibrant. Green, on the other hand, offers a deeper tone for you to play up. These two colors give you a fun base to start working with, whether contrasting it with a splash of complementary or analogous colors, or going full monochromatic by embracing just lavender or green hues throughout. For the effortlessly stylish beauty in Liza Soberano, these hues are best paired with pattern play, evoking the Y2K pop craze inspired by Avril Lavigne and Britney Spears. If your phone can already carry the fun of Lavender or the structure of Green, then why not turn it up with your outfit?

Focus on a central statement piece like a designer bomber jacket in a variety of colors, and coordinate the rest of your outfit using the same color palette in that statement piece. If you want to be more adventurous, create an overall pattern that is uniform throughout several pieces. For cohesion, tie the fit together with a tight color palette, such as strictly shades of green.

Another way to see this style recommendation is to work outwards, with the clothes closest to your body acting as the foundation, and layering on progressively louder pieces such as your jacket, bag, and jewelry.

With a fit as stunning as this, you’d want to capture and share it online. The Galaxy Z Flip3 5G gives you unique ways to capture every moment with its three key cameras. Its 10MP snapper on the front is great to use during Flex Mode or when the phone is propped up on a surface for a hands-free shot. The rear system of two 12MP wide and ultra-wide cameras can also be used to snap a selfie with the help of the Cover Screen right on the outer face of the phone. Flip open the phone, open your favorite social media platform, and share away!

Cream and Phantom Black: Classy and Sassy

If specific colors in the spectrum aren’t your jam, Samsung still carries the classics: a Cream colorway covered in glass to shine during the day, and a Phantom Black color with a matte finish as smooth as the night sky. These colors aren’t just neutral—they carry a twist, such as the Cream being a bit warmer than your usual white, and Phantom Black being the only matte exterior. Adding onto these unique finishes, Liza embraces her femininity and elevates her look with the utmost elegance.

Styling with black and cream tones gives you the most versatility, with almost every color in the spectrum pairing well with these. You can go for your favorite, like Liza in her iridescent red slim-fit dress, and play with that to match your make-up and other accessories. Going with the classics is also a great way to stand out without being too plain, such as a little black dress or an all-black top and bottom pairing. You can also focus on the subtleties like varying textures and cuts for added character despite the monochromatic look.

The Galaxy Z Flip3 5G comes in a compact 4.2 inches when folded closed, allowing you to fit it in a small purse or your tight pockets. Making your next big move on social media comes with no lag as the 6.7-inch Infinity Flex Display has up to 120Hz refresh rate that delivers smooth scrolling and vivid colors. And even if you’re caught up in work or out enjoying the nightlife, you can remain productive with split screen multitasking and dance the night away without worrying about accidental splashes with its IPX8 water-resistant rating—a first for any foldable.

The epitome of fashion and function can be yours with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. With a folding design that screams high-tech and high-attitude (imagine all the calls you can end by folding the phone shut), this is every up-and-coming trendsetter’s must-have, whether you want to make it big online, want to boost productivity at work, or just want to pocket the industry’s most precious smartphone.

How Arthur Nery Went From Being An English Tutor To A Fast Rising OPM Artist

line
Arthur Nery is taking his sound to the mainstream.

Arthur Nery went from performing at birthday parties and weddings to having one of the biggest hits of the year with Pagsamo.

They say that most people’s journey in life is never a straight path. While you may see yourself achieving a certain dream, the road to that usually isn’t clear-cut. You may have to go through a few detours before you reach your destination. For Arthur Nery, while music was a major presence and source of inspiration in his life, pursuing a career in music was not something he immediately saw himself doing.

But after taking on a few jobs here and there, Arthur decided to take the plunge and pursue music full time. And it’s safe to say that he made the right decision given how he is seen as one of the stars of the next generation of OPM. NYLON Manila recently caught up with the young musician to talk about his music, the success of Pagsamo, and what else we can expect from him.

HOW MUSIC CAME INTO ARTHUR’S LIFE

Born and raised in Cagayan De Oro, Arthur Nery was always into music since he was young. In fact, music actually runs in the family as his parents are singers. He credits them for inspiring him to make music. “When I was younger, we used to sing like worship songs before sleeping. So ‘yun siguro, doon na-open ‘yung mind ko sa music and dun na nagtuloy-tuloy.” Aside from this, Arthur’s dad was also into jazz and blues, so hearing artists like Frank Sinatra and Michael Buble wasn’t an uncommon at the Nery household. But while Arthur did dabble in making and writing music and songs while in high school and college, he mostly kept it to himself or close friends and family.

When he was in college, Arthur took up a degree in Psychology at Ateneo de Cagayan. His early jobs were also unrelated to music. For a time, he was an online English tutor teaching Japanese students. He also trained at a call center. Arthur admits that he actually enjoyed what he was doing before. “I loved my job before. But you know mas tumatakbo ‘yung puso papunta sa music career so ayun I just kept following my heart.” And follow his heart he did.

BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT

After a little encouragement from a close friend, Arthur decided to become a full-time musician. But success didn’t come in an instant. Like most struggling artists, Arthur resorted to performing at birthday parties, weddings, company parties, basically places that would accept him. But he would soon get his proverbial golden ticket in 2019.

Arthur was booked to be the opening act to comedian Wacky Kiray’s concert in Bukidnon. There, he performed his first single, the independently released Life Puzzle. The performance got the attention of Wacky Kiray and he asked him if he had a record deal. When Arthur said no, Wacky called up Kean Cipirano and told him about Arthur. One thing led to another and soon, Arthur Nery was a signed artist under Kean’s record label, O/C Records. And the success soon followed.

RECORD-BREAKING SUCCESS OF PAGSAMO

Following his record deal signing in 2019, Arthur dropped his second official single, Binhi, which became a hit in its own right. Later in the year, he also dropped his debut studio album, Letters Never Sent, which included the hit single Higa. The 10-track album became a critical favorite and was praised for its lyrics and R&B-inspired sound. But 2021 would prove to be Arthur’s biggest year in his career to date. On October 1, he dropped his latest single, Pagsamo, and it quickly became a smash hit. The emotional track broke Spotify Philippines records and racked up over 400k-500k streams on a daily basis. It also beat back global superstars like BTS and Adele to reach the top spot on the charts.

Pagsamo - Single by Arthur Nery | Spotify

As of this writing, Pagsamo has over 12.8 million streams on Spotify and is currently number one on Spotify Philippines’ Top 50 chart. In fact, five of Arthur’s songs are currently in the Top 50 charts. Arthur expressed that he couldn’t believe the success he’s currently experiencing. “Hindi ko pa siya ma-grasp totally. ‘Yung thought na nag #1 siya kasi I was so busy doing, making, creating more and more. I feel overwhelmed though and flattered pero ‘di pa talaga siya nagsi-sink in sakin.” Arthur’s success even helped him chart on the Global Artist Ranking, alongside one of his favorite artists, Daniel Caesar. “I was so surprised. Kasi ‘yun nga I’m a fan of Daniel tapos ‘yung sa ranking magkatabi talaga kami, as in super close. Pero thank you so much for supporting me and thank you for taking care of me, Daniel Caesar. Fans, thank you for existing.”

HOW PAGSAMO CAME TO BE AND ARTHUR’S MUSICAL STYLE

“It’s probably the most personal song na nasulat ko ever and ayon, hinugot ko lahat don,” says Arthur about the inspiration behind Pagsamo. While the track is currently experencing huge success, making the song itself with his producer Axel was quite uneventful, at least for Arthur. “Nung ginawa ko siya, super random day lang, very random evening. Naisip ko ‘yung intro, ‘yung first line, then ayon na don na nagsimula. Ang bilis niya natapos, parang sobrang bilis lang siya.”

Given how Arthur has only been in the industry for a few years, he doesn’t have a concrete idea of what his music style is. “Wala akong specific genre in mind while writing the songs.” While his music does feature elements of R&B neo-soul, it’s not the full picture of his style. “Meron konting neo-soul R&B. Pero ‘di rin siya pure.”

This fluidity is also present when it comes to making music, which he describes as freestyle. “Sometimes ‘yung mga random thoughts minsan may pumapasok sa isip ko na beat lang, tempo lang, arrangement lang, pero walang words. Minsan naman nauuna yung words. Minsan sabay. Most of the time sabay siya na pag nagsusulat ako, may specific note na siya for that specific word.” As for what fuels his music, he says that the people around him and the life and stories from his friends and family are what he looks to for inspiration.

HONESTY IN HIS MUSIC

When you listen to a song from Arthur Nery, you should be prepared for vocals, honesty, and emotion. Whenever Arthur composes a song, it comes from a special place which is why most, if not all, of his songs really hit home to a lot of people. This honesty and somewhat raw emotion is something Arthur tries to put into his music. “I’m always honest with my lyrics kasi super judgmental ko sa sarili ko na parang kini-criticize ko ‘yung self ko na pag gumawa ako ng pretentious na lyrics/emotions na ganito, ganyan. Hindi ako nakaka-move forward sa next ko na mga steps. I want it to be as pure as possible.”

He admits that he does worry sometimes that may get too honest with his music and tries to avoid putting out information that is too personal. But his goal is to always make music that people can relate to, or at least feels real to him. “It doesn’t matter kung ano ilalagay mo diyan as long as people understand. If it’s from the heart, it’s good.”

DEALING WITH PRESSURE AND FUTURE PLANS

With Pagsamo currently heating up the charts, does Arthur Nery feel the pressure for his next release to do well? “Yes, andon naman talaga siya, lagi. ‘Di siya nawawala. You can get very heartfelt and emotional when it comes to your music.” But with the way he sees it, all the songs he has released so far are special to him. “I treat my songs as children. I love them differently. May respect ako sa mga times na yun yung nailabas ko na music. So, I respect my songs. Kasi sila ‘yung outlet ko ng mga times na ‘yon.”

As of now, Arthur is currently busy working on his next projects. He said that he is working on his second studio album and it will be coming soon. He also teased other releases, including more collaborations with other artists. He’s been so busy working on his music that he admits he still hasn’t found the time to really process his current success and legions of new fans. Speaking of new fans, when asked what he thinks the first song first-time listeners of his should listen to, he suggests either Binhi, Higa, or Pagsamo, and even joked, “Siguro kantahan ko na lang sila in person.”

Arthur’s relatively quick rise in the OPM scene is something that many musicians would dream of. And even though Arthur’s journey to where he is now wasn’t easy, he cites his family as the reason why he says motivated. “I want to give my mom a better life and my family and ayon lagi. Lumaki ako sa training na ‘go bigger go home’ or if you go home, it’s okay, you go big next time. Parang ganon, starts with the family.”

As for his advice for aspiring and would-be musicians, something he can very much relate to, he says this. “Art is free. You own your own craft. Just be inspired and never treat other artists as competition kasi medyo nakaka-hinder ‘yan ng progress mo as an artist and individuality. Medyo nag-slower ‘yung pace mo pag masyado nagma-matter sa’yo ‘yung competition. Just be yourself and just keep on expressing. And never be afraid to feel emotions. If you’re an artist, always remember to create from the heart and always remember to take care of yourself. And be good to other people. Respect above anything else.”

Decoding The Visual Storytelling In Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour Era

line
Y2K fashion meets schoolgirl style meets Olivia’s personal aesthetic tastes.

One important aspect of Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour era is how she uses visuals to tell and enhance the story she is trying to tell in her debut album.

Related: These Creatives From Cotabato Did An Olivia Rodrigo-Inspired Shoot At 7-Eleven In 10 Minutes

Saying Olivia Rodrigo is having a hugely successful year is an understatement. With her knack for storytelling and the way her music speaks to the heart, the young artist is a musical force to be reckoned with.

But aside from the amazing music, which has been dissected and on repeat since its release, it’s time to draw attention to one of the underrated aspects of Sour: the way it conveys meaning through its aesthetic and visuals. Whether it’s through fashion, elements, and color schemes; Sour’s eye-catching visuals succeed in complementing every song, enhancing the necessary expression of feelings and emotions to accompany one’s listening experience.

When you listen to the surreal dreaminess of Deja Vu, don’t you think of strawberry ice cream, late-night car rides, Polaroids, and Olivia’s green dress? As a storyteller, the teenage singer utilizes imagery to its full poignant potential.

When you think of Sour, what images come to mind? If you could make your own Sour mood board, it would probably have one or more of the following: Butterflies, heart-shaped candy, stickers, and flowers. Perhaps sparkling tears running down the face of a prom queen.  But have you ever wondered about the reasons for these artistic choices?

The answer is in the associated meaning of each of these symbols, which drives the story that the song and the album are trying to tell. Without further ado, here are the meanings behind Sour’s aesthetic. And with Halloween around the corner, this could serve as a useful guide to making that perfect Olivia-inspired costume.

BUTTERFLIES AND FLOWERS

Sour (and Olivia’s Instagram) is decked out in butterflies and flowers. Lots and lots of them. Throughout history, butterflies and flowers have been symbolic of finding beauty in the temporary. Flowers do not stay in bloom for long, and butterflies have short lives. But for what they lack in longevity, they make up for in color and vibrance. In ancient civilizations, warriors had butterflies tattooed on them, representing the short and glorious life of a soldier fighting for his tribe and lands.

In the album, butterflies and flowers are a metaphor for being a teenager. Teenhood comes and goes in only seven years. But those years are full of wondrous self-discovery, naive mistakes, heartbreak, and all the trials that come with blossoming into an adult. Though adolescence is only a small percentage of one’s life, it is raw, wild, and memorable.

Additionally, her VMAs look and stage outfit incorporated lots of butterflies, from her earrings down to her hair ornaments and dress details! (They definitely made her look like a fairy.) The butterfly-themed fashion represent the fleeting rituals of youth such as prom, graduation, and more. Sour hits different when you’re going through these things, which is one of many reasons Gen Z identifies with the album so much. It’s pure teenage angst and emotions, but we all know it will come to pass.

THE COLOR PURPLE

Moving onto the dominant color of the era, Sour’s merchandise, vinyl cover, and album art are all splashed in a soft hue of purple. Associated with introspection, insight, and looking within oneself, the color purple appropriates how much Olivia poured her heart and soul into the album. As the combination of red (passion) and blue (tranquility), purple is also considered a color of duality.

This is evident throughout the album as the singer alternates between passionately belted songs like Brutal and Good 4 U followed by heart-wrenching ballads such as Enough For You and Drivers License. While it is a somber color, much more serious than red or blue, it also has the capacity to feel magical. With its whimsical hue, the color is associated with unicorns and fairies. If Say So and Kiss Me More by Doja Cat sound like light pink, then Olivia’s songs are lilac purple.

Purple is also the signature color of Euphoria, a show that epitomizes Gen Z’s fearlessly creative and non-conformist aesthetic. The dark teen drama series is also credited for sparking current trends in Gen Z makeup that are now staples on Tiktok and the music videos of young artists: from glitter tears to rhinestones around the eyes, vinyl makeup looks, shimmering eyeshadow, and sparkling face crystals.

HEART-SHAPED CANDY

These conversation candy hearts may look sweet, but some of them are sour. At first glance, Olivia’s fun, colorful aesthetic and sweet personality might make you think she’s a bubblegum pop star. But she’s more than that. She’s not afraid to curse in her songs or express negative emotions. She’s a storyteller of feelings that aren’t sweet because human emotions are anything but. They’re messy, dramatic, and not always fun.

And where are emotions felt? You got it, in the heart. In Sour, the candies represent the whole spectrum of human emotions: from red hot anger to purple contemplativeness, deep blue sadness, jealousy green, and drunk-in-love pink. While listening to the album, you will definitely feel every single one of these feelings.

STICKERS AND NOTEBOOKS

This part will answer one of the most commonly asked questions about Sour’s album art. “Why did Olivia cover her face and tongue with stickers?” Because stickers are a cool layer to add when telling stories.

Stickers are playful, fun, and colorful emblems of youth and adolescence—essential parts of scrapbooks and diaries. You need stickers as a finishing touch when you’re done writing out all your frustration and hormone-driven angst. Or to release all your pent-up creativity or the latest aesthetic you’ve been obsessed with. Stickers are also awesome for cheering up your boring math notebook and helping you daydream during class. Speaking of which, why the notebook?

Aside from contributing to the school aesthetic of the album (since Olivia wrote Sour in high school), the notebooks in Sour convey honesty and raw emotions—like the expression, “reading someone like an open book.” This is why all of Sour’s lyric videos are animated like a scrapbook. She treats Sour like a diary, letting the listener experience things from her point of view.

STRAWBERRY ICE CREAM

Strawberry ice cream represents the sweetness that came before the “Sour.” They are the memories of a crush, a smooth-sailing relationship, and the good times before everything went south. It provides a compelling contrast to the entire theme of the album.

It’s notable that the lyric “strawberry ice cream in Malibu” in Deja Vu references a highly ideal scenario, relaxing and eating ice cream on a beach without a care in the world. This ideal scenario is far from the messiness of reality that is expressed in songs like Brutal and Enough For You.

THE DEJA VU GREEN DRESS

In literature, green is the color of envy, which Olivia expresses in Deja Vu as she watches her ex’s new girlfriend move on to someone else. This theme of being green with envy continues in songs like Jealousy, Traitor, Good 4 U, and Drivers License. In Sour, green represents the bitter side of its spectrum of flavors.

SCREENS

Olivia Rodrigo Felt Unattractive Growing up Without 'European Features'

All of Sour’s music videos have Olivia singing inside of a screen. Whether it’s on a phone, television, security camera, or projected onto a person; screens represent performance or “playing a part,” as well as the divide between the audience and the performer.

In Sour, screens represent the multifaceted quality of human nature, and how many roles we have in life. In your own story, you are the main character, but in someone else’s you might be the antagonist. For example, in Drivers License, Olivia is envious of “that blonde girl” while in Brutal, she becomes the blonde girl. In Deja Vu, she is wistful and pensive about her jealousy, but screams in a flaming room in the music video for Good 4 U. While most people only get to see one side of a person, the screens in Sour show that a person cannot be boxed into that one side because there is so much more.

Face Filters

The face filters represent awareness of social media, particularly in Brutal. In the music video, she portrays a celebrity on livestream singing in frustration “All I did was try my best, this the kind of thanks I get, unrelentlessly obsessed.” This references the illogical amount of hate that celebrities receive by simply being easy targets since they are in the limelight. It also references the obsession of news companies with making false narratives about public figures in order to get more views.

This is a reach, but perhaps they also represent how Gen Z expresses themselves. Today, young people have more conversations about mental health, talk openly about societal issues, and wear their hearts on their sleeves.

And that’s it! You now understand Sour’s aesthetic. It’s very meaningful, and it’s also really cute, so no wonder teens, young adults, (and some millennials) all over the world love to emulate it online.

It’s no surprise then to learn that a lot of people would like to try out for Big Hit, the company of BTS and TXT, not just because they can be label mates with the said artists, but also because of the good reputation Big Hit has. And if you ever wondered how you, yes you, can be part of Big Hit, wonder no more.

Here’s is how you can audition:

AUDITION PROCESS

big hit audition

First, head on over the Big Hit Music application page to fill out the form. You need to choose between four different fields for your audition: vocal, rap, dance, or production. Each field will require you to submit a photo that clearly shows your face and a video for your audition clip. If you choose vocal, the video should show you singing a song of your choice with your upper body visible. If you choose rap, you can sing/rap a song of your choice or an original composition. Your upper body must be visible.

If you choose dance, your whole face and body must be seen in your routine. And if you choose producing, you must submit an original piece of work through a sound source, a MIDI-type file, or similar formats. The video and original work must be at least 1 minute long or longer. Big Hit empathized that you should not include filters in your attached photo and the video must be clear and well shot or else it may be discarded. The deadline for applications is on December 20, 2021, so you have enough time to get in those auditions. Those whose applications get accepted will be contacted by staff individually where you will be informed of your next steps.

So, if you feel like you have what it takes and are ready for this, then get that audition ready. Who knows, you may just become the next K-Pop idol superstar. If you need any motivation for your audition, check out this video of TXT talking about their auditions and trainee life.

James Reid Makes An Emotional Return To Acting After Two Years In Zack Tabudlo’s Para Sa Mga Ex

line
“Bakit parang ang sakit?”

In the heartfelt series of visual narratives inspired by the tracks off his album, Episode, Zack Tabudlo makes us feel so many things, this time with James Reid.

“Get ready to eat yo feelings,” James Reid warns us in an Instagram post, his words trite but tipping with so much emotions. In the photo, the artist who has taken some sort of sabbatical from acting for two years returns to fine form, albeit caught in a still of shadowed contemplation. While he wasn’t completely absent from the screens, as he did star in his own music videos and for his label, Careless Music (his appearances in Nadine Lustre’s Wildest Dreams visual album epic was a moment in itself), his turn in Para Sa Mga Ex, Zack Tabudlo’s second release in a series of musical short films to accompany the recent drop of his first album, Episode, is a significant stride in the current shift of his career.

For all intents and purposes, this proved to be somewhat of a catharsis for everyone involved, the reader included, because despite bringing to life a buoyant bidding of resolve and reconciliation of Para Sa Mga Ex, the visual narrative is decidedly more stark with its wash of saturated neon lights flickering with every swing and charge of emotions quite the opposite of what the song says. “Hello. Okay lang ako,” James Reid beckons in the opening scene of Zack Tabudlo track, which obviously parallels the belying of narrative from the soundtrack. Already gripping from the first uttering of syllables almost under a breath, the Para Sa Mga Ex spills in, baring a heartache that is woven with lyrical defiance.

“We’re in a phase, as well as my music, where everyone goes through heartbreak. I know friends who’ve gone through heartbreaks. I’ve gone through exes,” reveals Zack Tabudlo of what makes Para Sa Mga Ex raw, riveting, and relatable.

The James Reid And Zack Tabudlo Connection

“People in general,” he tells ABS-CBN News, “Get hurt.” So, what is musician to do? Put it in a song, naturally. “We have our lowest of lows. We get hurt. We become vulnerable. We cry. We break. And that’s just part of life,” continues the musical prodigy bridging old-school OPM to a younger generation. In this particular part of life, as directed by Kani Villaflor, we see James Reid break away from the trippy, otherworldly persona in Soda and the surprisingly sharp humor of Hello, and bares his heart anew to the words and music of Zack Tabudlo.

Framed in fragments, the official music video of Para Sa Mga Ex details the realities of a solitary grieving process. From time following the slow ticks of the clock to breaking things in sight and arm’s reach, James Reid tiptoes denial and decision, confronting the emotions long held at bay. Tracking everything from the quiet, the rage, and the tears, this is a collective reflection of every heartbreak everyone has had some sort of experience with at one point in their lives.

“So much emotion in a music video, thank you so much for doing this after two years of taking a break wt acting brother,” writes Zack Tabudlo of his collaboration and connection with James Reid. “You can really see the difference of real actors and how they can portray characters in such a passionate and unique way. I appreciate everything [you] did for this mv, all my love to you brother.” The result is a priceless coming together of artistry and authenticity that speaks volumes, making the audience feel more than they thought they would. “Bakit parang ang sakit?” and so goes the general mood online hours after the premiere. Well, because it precisely is that, painful.

Chase The Blues Away

Here, the realities of the song and story are flipped, which makes for a more aching telling. But as it grips and pierces at every scene, there grows a slow acceptance to what needs to be done. As with any great story and song, there is no gratuitous ending to Para Sa Mga Ex. Setting out to be real from the get-go, it finishes in a striking sense of sadness and stillness that sears right through.

In the final trails of the track off of Zack Tabudlo’s Episode, James Reid checks back on the time, but not much has changed. Just as it began with just himself barely able to keep up with his brimming feelings, he still is alone, which is further detailed by his cocooning in bed. Lonely, but oddly hopeful, Para Sa Mga Ex reminds us that wherever one is at, whether it be on the speaking or receiving end of that crushing potential final phone call, there will be hurt. However, just like the comforting warmth of yellow chases the blues away, there really is life after letting go and moving on, according to your own pace, of course.

4 Reasons Why Ara Galang and Aby Maraño’s On and Off-Court Tag Team Will Always Be Dominant

line
That's my best friend. She a real bad b*tch.

It takes one to know one and these two prove that they’re more than just volleyball stars on (and off) the court.

Nowadays, it’s hard to find your soulmate IRL. Not necessarily a significant other in the romantic sense, but just someone who you know will be there for you in the long haul. You know, your ride or die, so to speak. Luckily, a friendship like volleyball teammates Aby Maraño and Ara Galang exists. Probably twin flames in this lifetime, they really went from being teammates, to co-MVPs then to becoming each other’s number one cheerleader even post-UAAP. They also have a term of endearment for each other! Aby calls Ara her “daughterf,” while she calls her team captain “fairy godmotherf.” A word of caution: do not mess with these two, because their tag team will always be dominant. From blocks, spikes, winning championships, to overall emotional support, Aby Maraño and Ara Galang is the type of friendship we all need.

WHEN ARA GALANG AND ABY MARAÑO BECAME CO-MVPs AT THE UAAP

For the first time in the history of the country’s premiere collegiate athletic league, Ara Galang and Aby Maraño became co-MVPs at the 75th UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament. It was the year that they lead the DLSU Lady Spikers to a 13-1 record. Aby was awarded Best Blocker, while in the previous season, Ara was the Rookie of the Year.

WHEN THEY PROVED THAT YOU’RE STRONGER WHEN YOU HELP EACH OTHER OUT

“Miss ko na mahawaan ng super saiyan mo,” Aby comments as Ara posted a photo saying that she misses being on super saiyan mode at volleyball games. While society’s obsessed with pitting women against each other, these two have been through it all.

ABY TEASING ARA FOR BEING AN ENGLISHERA

aby maraño ara galang ramil de jesus

We all have that one friend who won’t hesitate to call us out instantly. In a post shared by Ara to celebrate their coach Ramil de Jesus’ birthday, Aby teased her for speaking in English. “Taraaaayy!! Englisherist pag si coach RDJ babatiin! IBAAA,” comments the volleyball captain herself.

WHEN ARA BECAME THE BEST FRIEND WE ALL NEEDED

When your best friend is going through a nasty, painful, and not to mention, public phase, we know that all hell will break loose. Coming for blood, Ara Galang trended last night on Twitter for calling out Aby’s now ex-boyfriend. “UL*L G*GO KA,” clapping back at the PBA player for posting a photo of him with another girl. Meanwhile Aby on the other hand said, “Solid naman ng vacation nyo. Di ko alam may bago ka na?” Shots were fired. You don’t mess with these two feisty spikers, because when it comes down to it, they will always have each other’s backs, as we do theirs, too.

Taste The Air Of Time: A Dune Review

line
A sci-fi epic in scale and scope.

The 2021 film, Dune, does the impossible by adapting the complex sci-fi novel into a movie that gives it justice on the big screen.

Related: F9: The Fast Saga Shows That The Franchise Is Starting To Lose Gas In The Tank

Ever since its announcement last year, I have sat down, hunched over my seat, in terse anticipation of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the science-fiction epic that has, for lack of better rhetoric, defied larger public comprehension. Given the depth and length of the original text, how would it hold up under the weight of expectation? Will it preserve Frank Herbert’s magnum opus with outstanding fidelity? Or will it leave a trail of broken hopes like an earlier adaptation had? Along with other fans of this epic, I wondered if the books I read will be translated faithfully on the silver screen.

A COMPLEX EPIC

Dune movie review & film summary (2021) | Roger Ebert

A compromise is negotiated. Dune (2021) features the first half, or so Denis says, but it is two-thirds of the original novel, save for some chapters. Twenty-one thousand years into the future–a distant and far-off dream–humanity has expanded its reach over the known universe. This Imperium is ruled by the 81st Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV of House Corrino. Shaddam is kept in check by the Great Houses that convene under the Landsraad–“an assembly of landed gentry,” in older Scandinavian languages, and the Spacing Guild that monopolizes all interstellar travel.

These aspects of power are bound further by Combine Honnete Ober Advancer Mercantiles (CHOAM, for short). That audits and accounts all economic activity throughout the stars. All also fall under the secretive influence of the Sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit. They are an order of female mystics, scientists and spies whose primary agenda is to advance the evolution of the human race.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF SCI-FI

Is 'Dune' The Next 'Avatar' Or The Next 'John Carter'?

From the onset, Dune’s premise is nothing like household sci-fi names such as Star Wars or Trek (despite what the film’s promotional trailers would like you to believe). There are no interstellar clone wars or massive battles pitched between flashy CGI starships in any minute of the film, save for a climactic confrontation between two rival Houses using only (non-CG) foot soldiers wielding swords, shields, and pikes. The film’s fidelity to the book entailed abandoning common tropes in modern science fiction. For example, energy-based weapons such as blasters–or lazguns, as they are identified in the book—are highly uncommon. Starships are plain spheres, trapezoidal prisms, or any other geometric shape. Dune abandons the visual spectacle of cosmic fiction in favor of developing complex characters woven by different story-telling pillars.

Sound design, mixed with Hans Zimmer’s grand score of military bagpipes, choirs, and rock, delivers just how alien Arrakis was, both as a planet and as a home to human civilization twenty thousand years ahead of ours. My personal favorite is Armada: the piece that shears speakers throughout the confrontation between the forces of Houses Atreides and Harkonnen. Military bagpipes and chilling choral notes resound while the outnumbered Atreides make a valiant stand against the Harkonnen black raiders. At the time of writing this review, the third and final album for the film’s score–The Art and Soul of Dune–has just been released. In the midst of re-reading the original 1965 text, I find myself depicting Frank Herbert’s original composition in my head playing alongside Hans Zimmer’s pieces like The Attack and Caladan.

TRANSLATING THE BOOK TO THE SCREEN

Dune movie's first 10 minutes and Zendaya's key role, revealed - Polygon

Dune begins with Shaddam IV granting House Atreides fiefdom over the planet Arrakis. It is known throughout the universe as the only source of mélange, an important life-extending spice that gives its users limited prescience, blue eyes, and powers most of the space travel in the Dune universe. The move also supplants them from their ancestral home world of Caladan. Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) is heir to his House, and he inherits far too much power for his own comfort. His father, Duke Leto, is a popular lord among the Great Houses, and his retainers are considered the best in their trade. His mother, Lady Jessica, is concubine to the duke and a trained Bene Gesserit sister. All her psychic abilities ergo are Paul’s own.

Every character from House Atreides understands the implication of such an impossible colonial posting from Shaddam. In replacing House Harkonnen, the millennia-old rivals of the Atreides and the former stewards of Arrakis, with the Atreides, the latter are forced to rebuild their power base on a planet incredibly hostile to anyone but its indigent population the Fremen.

Villeneuve and his team of writers, Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth, succeed in juxtaposing colossal, space-bound operatic with intimate and clandestine theatre. Even in their household on Caladan, the Atreides family communicate in sign, Mandarin, and Chakobsa–an amalgam of languages like Arabic, French, Slavic, Hebrew, and Greek. Alien is exactly what Dune is–the concerns of House Atreides over their continued survival against political predators like the Harkonnens and the jealous Shaddam are mirrored to profound effect on the titular Dune.

Dune Passes An International Box Office Benchmark Ahead Of US Release

Water, on this desert planet, is non-existent. Its inhabitants must ration and recycle any drop of fluid they can find, including the sweat of their bodies and the condensation of their roofs following a cold evening. Water scarcity and political enemies are not the only predators on Arrakis, however. Native to the planet are the massive sandworms that roam its deserts and produce the mélange that the Atreides must harvest to make a profit and meet the emperor’s demands for the fiefdom.

An unimaginable effort has been expended in adapting the book without compromising its thematic underpinnings. Chapters detailing Duncan Idaho’s notorious lack of sobriety are deleted in the film to favor expanded characterization of Lady Jessica’s role as both Bene Gesserit agent and mother to the Kwisatz Haderach. Duke Leto, largely a character that existed to prop Paul up on his journey into the desert, is depicted as a noble fiercely dedicated to the well-being of his subordinates.

A TEASE FOR THE FUTURE AND THE BEGINNINGS OF AN EPIC

Dune (2021) - IMDb

Dune is not shy about connoting that there is more to its story; its title card reads “Part One,” and the film’s two-and-a-half journey ends on a cliffhanger. Much of its exposition does not feel like exposition, especially if you pay attention. So questions such as what the Gom Jabbar is or who the Spacing Guild are encourages curiosity more than they turn off casual viewers. Paul, bearing the weight of House Atreides and the expectations of his lineage, is both an archetype–a character following his destiny–and a compelling critique on Dune’s obvious colonial overtures. Is he a white savior character or is he, as Frank Herbert intended so many decades ago, a subversion of missionary imperialism? The film does not offer enough answers, or yardsticks, in fact, for those questions, but they open the door all the same.

“The mystery of life isn’t a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced,” says a character that hounded Paul’s prescient visions. What Dune–and its literary predecessors–have to offer us is exactly that: a massive variation of the universe cultivated by millennia of cultures and rituals. Despite an introduction that differed from the novel’s, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is exactly how I, along with so many other avid readers, imagined a film adaptation should be. Denis has outlined in another interview that he has planned a trilogy of films to adapt Dune and its sequel, Dune Messiah. Should Part One succeed, and I hope against all hope that it does, such a trilogy would easily become a highly anticipated series of films by sci-fi fans old and new. Kull wahad.
