Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet Album

“I love listening to Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet album because it offers a perfect balance of upbeat, catchy tunes and heartfelt ballads that fit any mood. Her authentic, relatable lyrics make me feel connected to her personal experiences, which resonate deeply. The variety in musical styles keeps the album fresh and engaging from start to finish. Sabrina’s smooth, emotive vocals elevate every song, creating an immersive listening experience. Overall, the album’s fun, yet reflective vibe makes it a go-to for both relaxing moments and when I need an energy boost.” – Gelo Quijencio, Multimedia Artist

“I know it came out in August, but it has been the only thing I’ve been listening to since September started. When Sabrina said, “’Cause no one’s more amazin’ at turnin’ lovin’ into hatred,” she was nothing short (n’ sweet) but real.” – Maria Sophia Andrea E. Rosello, Social Media Associate

“She’s just that iconic.” – Bianca Lao, Brand Associate

Lady Gaga’s Harlequin Album

“Composed of mostly covers and tracks featured on the Joker 2 movie, Harlequin harkens back to Gaga’s jazz era but with a more twistedly playful vibe fitting for the movie and her role. She devoured vocally, as expected, and proved once again that jazz really is one of her best genres. My favorite is The Joker, because I love hearing Gaga embrace a more rock sound.” – Rafael Bautista, Managing Editor

Wistoria: Wand and Sword

“In this magical series, a youngster who doesn’t seem to have any magic talent uses only his swordsmanship skills to work his way up in a magical institution (in a nation where magic is considered an absolute power) in order to reunite with his magical genius friend. Wistoria: Wand and Sword is still an intriguing series even though it hasn’t been able to overcome all of its issues. There’s a lot of potential, considering that it is on-going along with some great artwork as well as the fight scenes.” – Kurt Abonal, Fashion Assistant

GOING SEVENTEEN Episodes 112-113

“The Going Seventeen TRAP two-parter is one of the best horror/thriller GOSE episodes ever. It’s got everything good in a GOSE: an engaging story, SEVENTEEN getting scared, the members getting to show off their detective and survival/FPS skills, and more. It’s clever, comedic, and thrilling to boot. I rewatched it like five times this month.” – Nica Glorioso, Features Writer

Set It Up

“As someone who is a sucker for romcoms and briefly just got off a Glen Powell phase after watching ‘Anyone But You’ and ‘Top Gun Maverick’. ‘Set It Up’ was a feel-good, breath of fresh air, and I was quite the fan of the chemistry between Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell. For anyone looking for some spice in the corporate life trope, Set It Up is a great movie to watch! 🙂” – Bianca Lao, Brand Associate

Someone Who Will Love You in All Your Damaged Glory

“This book is just so good. I love how experimental each entry in the collection is. The reader experience stays fresh throughout the pages and it’s just plainly well-written. It comes from the creator of BoJack Horseman, which is evident in the absurdist nature of the stories. I also like how there’s a mix of narratives that are very direct to the point in what is being said and some more ambiguous stories where the reader can interpret it in so many different ways and appreciate it on many different levels. Overall, it’s nearly a perfect book. I could literally talk about it for hours.” – Maggie Batacan, EIC

Burnout In The Big City: 5 Ways to Slow Down Amid Manila’s Buzz

From 🚗 🗣️ 💨 to 😴 🧖‍♀️ 💆‍♀️ real quick.

Crazy lights and shooting stars (if the smog isn’t obstructing the view, that is), Manila’s gritty and fast-paced energy can leave us feeling so exuberant to do more than we could that we forget to breathe. Everyone’s onto the next big thing– from hopping on the newest vintage flea market to taking a snap of the brat walls that swarmed Manila streets– not to mention the need to imprint our names is both daunting yet so fast; we are left with no choice but to move in two times speed to not lose shine.

Or, like with many of us, we’re just trying to survive the city, the never-ending traffic, high prices, and generally slog through what we call modern living in order to not get eaten up by the system.

This is especially true to those who recently moved to the Metro. All of our lives packed in our old highschool Jansports backpack or older siblings’ suitcase, and just like in the telenovelas, we treat the world as our oyster.

But the idea of slowing down and being ambitious is not black and white; if anything, they’re symbiotic to each other. Reality and dreams will always co-exist, and it’s just a matter of finessing our flow in its streams. Living in the big city as a young and impressionable Gen Z can make you feel as if you want to do more, or struggle with the many demands the Metro has in store for you.

This is why it’s needed to have that time and space to separate yourself from the rigors of Manila. So, scroll down for a few ways to slow down in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the Metro.

INVEST IN A DIARY

via GIPHY

Contrary to popular belief, diaries are still in. It’s your quintessential thought daughters and sons staple. There’s something intricately sacred about weaving out each and every crevice of your feelings for your own consumption only, instead of the usual rant session in the group chat or on a private X account.

Writing about anything under the sun and even junk journaling can cleanse your mind. A fun little prompt for the day to write about is also a good tip! So make sure to still talk to your heart and mind through the flip of a paper, you may be surprised.

REKINDLE OLD HOBBIES

via GIPHY

Yes, it’s hard to find the time, but even just consuming media about it can sometimes do the trick already. It can be as simple as dressing up just for fun, watching baking videos, or listening to a podcast about your niche interest. Picking up pieces of what used to interest you can ironically gear you up for better, novel ideas and hobbies!

On my end, finding the time to play the old PSP games I was obsessed with as a kid is a different kind of exciting seeing it as a college student now. In a way, it makes me full of gratitude, knowing that those nostalgic playtimes can still happen.

SEEK OUT COMFORT

via GIPHY

In everything you do, a treat is a must-have afterwards; whatever that may be. It can be your all-time favorite series to binge, a food combo you’re very particular about, or a nice, long sleep. Even as you work on your school project or organize your excel sheet, a comforting cup of your favorite drink can help to have your moment of silence.

This also goes for those who may feel pressured to document everything on social media. Rest assured, the memories you love will stay with you, and it’s not always a necessity to capitalize your nice dinner for likes.

HAVE A REAL DAY-OFF

via GIPHY

Sometimes, weekends can feel like a mere preparation for the upcoming week and rest is suddenly thrown out of the picture. Having a strict schedule for rest should be the new trend. It’s not always about grinding our gears off! It should also be about laying softly and meditating. On that note, shutting off notifications should be normalized, especially when you already feel anxiety creep in. This goes for not just messages, but also the spams of emails to rid mind clutter.

KEEP IN TOUCH

via GIPHY

Finally, there’s nothing like a good yap session with your friends. The topics are boundless and reach all sorts of worlds whenever you’re with the right people; and a good laugh is always a heartfelt way to loosen tension and pressures. And for others, staying silent with loved ones can bring you back to your senses. Conversations are free-flowing and should never be forced. Quietude is love in its own charming way.

As a final reminder, the city, in all of its overcrowded glory and lightning, will always be there, so don’t rush. Trust whatever’s meant for you.

i know a lot of smart conyos actually and i love being groupmates with them cause they really do be this responsible and save me from deadlines 😂

Did you always want to be an actress/content creator? Did you always see yourself doing what you do now?

This line of work for me started as more of a joke. I remember, before I graduated college, I was telling my friends: “I will never be caught doing content online. I will never be an influencer.” There was such a negative connotation back then of what influencers are actually doing. But then I realized it was the best avenue for me to express myself and to connect with audiences, especially when the pandemic happened. I had finished my stint as a court-side reporter and I had no outlet anymore. So TikTok was the only open door for me. And all of a sudden I was eating my words! So I would say it was accidental. When I was younger, I would always joke about wanting to be an actor and on TV.  But none of it was ever done on purpose – I was just trying things out and it led me here.

What was your plan/dream in the beginning of your career?

My plan was to be in media as a reporter – I really wanted to start out as a field reporter. My five-year plan was to do that, maybe study Journalism again (because I studied Broadcasting and wanted to learn how to write better). But then, during the time I was graduating was when all the doors opened for acting and content creation, so I wasn’t able to explore News at all. Sometimes when I meet people in the industry like Atom Araullo and Kara David, they would always joke with me to still try for it.

Q: Would you say that it’s very different from what you’re doing now?

I wouldn’t say it’s very different, because it’s still reaching people and storytelling, which is the heart of what I love doing – whether it’s acting or creating content or conversing with people on my platforms. I love telling the stories of other people and learning from them. I’m more free to express my creativity here.

With your signature “Conyo Girl”, what is at the heart of that story that you’re trying to tell?

I think for me, as a creator, especially when I do skits, I love doing things very OA. I find joy in doing comedy. That’s why, even in acting, I do comedy and I find ways to over exaggerate a character, because I believe it brings joy to a lot of people. But the very heart of Conyo Girl was really just my delulu self! I would like to talk to myself and create scenarios alone in my room and find them hilarious. So I think I was bored. I never thought people would see those videos I recorded. I think it’s also a mixture of a lot of the people I met throughout my college life, which is what makes it relatable. Everyone knows a Conyo Girl or Conyo Guy in their lives. I just wanted to bring that into the space, because there were a lot of skits about public school and I wanted to add some pizzaz and show the story of a conyo student.

How did you make the jump from content creation to acting?

It was a drastic jump. Like I said, I like over exaggerating characters, and with content creation it was under my control: the script, how I act, how I post and when I post it. But when I jump into characters in acting for television, there are certain needs that the character has that are different from me. For me, joining workshops with Sparkle for the longest time, my acting coach would say that I couldn’t do characters that were far away from me. It was a struggle for a while, just fully surrendering to certain characters. That is where I found freedom to explore the bounds of a character and their needs that are totally separate from mine. It’s like jumping into a completely different world and it was very difficult.

What is the best and worst thing about showbiz?

The worst thing: I did not expect that it would take up such a huge chunk of my life. In the jobs I was able to do before, I was able to separate my personal life from the work that I do. I’ve been hosting and creating content for a while, but when I step out of that I’m just still me. But that industry hits a lot of parts of your life and you never know when people will recognize you in public. There are a lot of unexpected things that life throws at you, and a lot of relationships to consider when you’re on set. It’s not the worst part, bur it’s a difficult part of it because I like keeping to myself (contrary to what I show on social media).

The best part is the relationships I have built along the way. I’ve met a lot of amazing, creative people and independent minds, and that still continues to fuel my craft because I draw inspiration from them. Whenever I step on stage I add a little new something that I learned from the last person that I met. I love that part of it.

What is your dream acting gig?

Perhaps something very difficult. An emotion I find difficult to act out is fear. So perhaps a thriller, because that takes up a lot of physical energy as well. No role specifically, but that genre since I haven’t tried it.

How do you stay inspired as a content creator, especially now that you’re busy as an actress? Do you think you’ll ever give it up and dedicate your time to only being an actress?

I am not quite sure. I really love content creation. I love that it connects me to more audiences who need me in the space. I get messages from students asking me about my experiences as a court-side reporter, as a host, or even just as a student in UP and how I did it. I can’t let go of creating content because it keeps me connected to the generation of today and I want to maintain that.

I love acting, and it’s a very different kind of outlet. I love connecting to the audiences there as well. But I think the challenge lies in the balance because I don’t want to give up content creation. It’s more personal in the way that it connects me to my audiences.

♬ Forever Young – Alphaville

If you could do it all over again, are there things you would have done differently in college or in your career, knowing what you know now?

Because I had such a negative view of creating an online platform back then, what I would do differently is I would have shaken that off and jumped into the space earlier. When I jumped in, it was the pandemic and there were already a lot of people creating content when they were in college. There was a missed opportunity for me to share my experiences when I was going through it, rather than in hindsight.

What’s next for you? What can people expect to see from you in the near future?

I don’t know. I think I have just been enjoying my life. I don’t feel like my job is an actual job. I just want to let life surprise me. But if there’s something I want to do more of, it’s creating more content and branch out of Instagram and TikTok. Maybe do a podcast? Or grow in hosting. I love storytelling, but I also want to do it in a larger capacity where I give other people a platform as well.

Is there something crazy and unexpected for you that you want to try (for your career or just for yourself)?

One crazy thing that I would want to do is go on a backpacking trip. It’s been a pending thing from me since college and I wasn’t able to do because of the pandemic. My original plan was to graduate and then spend a couple months backpacking around Southeast Asia or wherever. But when I do it I want to be disconnected, which is crazy because I do my job as a content creator and I’m always online. For this specific experience I want to disconnect and experience the Lord, nature, and connect with myself.

Anything you want to shoutout or any causes you are passionate about that you want to bring more attention to?

What a lot of people don’t know is that, before entering UP, and before doing the conyo skits, which is very different from my life before, I graduated from a public school. I came from a public science high school, and that’s a cause I want to talk about more because there are a lot of issues that haven’t been dealt with in the sector of education. Education is very close to my heart, and hopefully there’s someone I could talk to to have a better understanding of my experience and how things can be improved in that system. Hopefully more people can join the cause as well and help me figure out how we can make an impact.

How can people educate themselves responsibly, especially in today’s Information Age in the advent of fake news, deep fakes, etc.?

What I always do, and this has been a common practice I learned in college is: corroboration. Everything is so fast-paced with the information that you share and receive, so even before I share something I try to research first and check if this information is something I want to accept and see if other sources have posted it as well. Deep fakes and AI have been really scary lately, and I sometimes would hear on TikTok music that sounds like new music and it turns out it’s from AI. I try to research as much as I can and check comments. With corroboration and checking multiple sources it’s easy to do now with the kind of access we have to information. That small extra step, with anything – preparing talks or mentioning small facts, I try to ask people. Corroboration can come, not just in research, but in many forms. You can ask those who you think are more knowledgeable in certain topics. That is a practice people should continue to do.

How do you maintain your mental health, as a person who is in the public eye and is subject to a lot of criticisms from people who don’t know you?

It’s very difficult. It has helped me a lot to admit that oftentimes you need help. Things can get overwhelming and isolating. People around me, my family and friends, are not in this space a lot. As a public persona, I want to protect myself, too, which is why I don’t openly share about things I go through to just anyone. So it can be isolating. But admitting I need that extra help has helped. I am very therapy and counseling positive. I believe it really helps you understand your thoughts better and helps you be a better a person for the people around you so you can love them better.

Do you have a message for your fans and/or the NYLON Manila audience?

This is the time of your life. There are so many open doors for you to walk through. There shouldn’t be fear of walking through any of them because time is on your side. I think a lot of the younger generations are scared of taking the next step because of fear of not being able to start over, or certain doors closing. But there’s enough time for you to explore all the different facets of your personality and then decide later. Now, in your teens or twenties, it’s too early to lock yourself and feel caged in your life. So live free!

For UP students: I passed UP Baguio and left after a while because I couldn’t take being away from my family. I was really young back then. I came back to UPD in 2017. There are a lot of ways to enter the university aside from the UPCAT. If you’re really passionate about getting an education from this university, or there’s a specific course you want to pursue and be equipped in, you should look at the other options you can try. There are a lot of doors open in this university.

What Went Down When We Took Over UP For The NYLON Manila Career Fair: University Takeover

For the second stop of the NYLON Manila Career Fair, we headed over to the University of the Philippines Diliman. Wondering what went down? We got you.

The 2024 NYLON Manila Career Fair: University Takeover started out strong at the De La Salle University, and the energy, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn carried over as we headed to our second stop of the Fair at the University of the Philippines Diliman!

With a series of informational and inspirational talks, panels, and games—as well as booths where students can score goodies—the Career Fair sought to arm UP students with knowledge regarding career paths and navigating a whole world beyond their studies.

nylon manila career fair: university takeover up diliman college

On September 26, NYLON Manila, in partnership with student organization UP Advertising Core (UP AdCore), brought the four-stop Career Fair to UPD. At the UP School of Statistics, we embarked on a journey to let college students know about the myriad of opportunities available to them and to, hopefully, help guide them before they set off on their chosen career paths. Curious about what goes on at NYLON Manila Career Fairs? Here’s a recap from the UP leg of the University Takeover.

TAKING MATTERS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS

nylon manila career fair: university takeover up diliman college

Before the main program started, the booths outside the auditorium opened, and students from all courses and walks of life explored booths from Bioten, Cetaphil and Benzac, AGC Power Holdings Corp. Human Resources, and of course, NYLON Manila ourselves.

Bioten’s calming booth adorned with greenery and their skincare products for a fresh glow often had cheers coming from it as students tried their hand at the lucky draw to win fun prizes. They made their way around the products and learned some tips about how to take care of their skin at this quite stressful time in their lives.

Cetaphil and Benzac—no stranger to school tours, if we may add—also highlighted the need for taking care of ourselves and addressing skin issues like acne with their top-of-the-line products. On their big mirror, students were encouraged to write messages and tips of their own! “Embrace you,” one message read. “If you want to give light to others,” another read. “You have to glow yourself.”

As the students strolled up to our booth find out more about the NYLON Manila MyZine (and to score their own), they got a firsthand look at how they can take the MyZine into their own hands and tailor it to their needs, tastes, and preferences. They were also delighted at the very student-friendly prices of the MyZine packs and the fun, interactive, and customizable aspect of the whole thing. The MyZine also becomes a great metaphor for how students can go as wild and imaginative as they want with their plans after college and their career.

WORDS OF WISDOM

nylon manila career fair: university takeover up diliman college

The program kicked off with a warm-up Kahoot! game about the day’s events to invigorate everyone before all the talks started. One winner took home a Sunnies Flask! Then, revving things up, UP Diliman graduate, content creator, and actress Rain Matienzo began the program and asked students what exactly they were curious about that may be tackled at the Career Fair. UP AdCore also took the stage to let everyone know about how they’re navigating the world creatively and with purpose.

nylon manila career fair: university takeover up diliman college

First to take the stage was content creator and recent UP Los Baños BA Communication Arts graduate Yani Villarosa, who recounted her own struggles as someone who was balancing academics and content creation.

Boasting quite a unique experience, content creators decide to embark on this journey while still juggling other responsibilities—and it’s become an attractive career option for people all over the nation and the world. Yani emphasized that regardless of whether you’re in school or at work, “our  well-being should be a priority, not an afterthought.”

Dermatologist Dr. Bea Chan bounced off the point of well-being and self-care as she talked about how our skin often suffers from a lot of harsh factors, like stress, blue light from our screens, and more. No matter how important you think SPF is, it’s even more important, y’all!

After a quick Kahoot! game, management consultant, transformational coach, and co-founder of Epiphany Collective PH Eric Cruz discussed how we all can be Big, Bold, and Brave as we mentally prepare ourselves for the workplace—by valuing confidence, authenticity, and a sense of clarity.

Next, Career Counsellor and Director of Academic and Student Affairs at the SoFA Design Institute Mads Constantino dropped some truth bombs and words of wisdom that can shift a perspective so powerfully. “Just like Tetris, if you fit in,” she says. “You will disappear.” Her talk on success, salary, the value of experience, and how to organize your priorities was an enlightening masterclass on blazing through the world with faith and confidence in yourself.

Lastly, Brand Associate Bianca Lao and Features Writer Nica Glorioso led a panel Q&A all about how to prepare for job applications and embarking on your first job. Joining HR Representatives Dennise Rialp, Jenny Brutas, and Head of HR Mairen Buan were Modern Media Group Inc. Chief Operating Officer Anne Bernisca and Head of Operations Nikki Balboa, as well as AGC Power Holdings’ Chief of Staff Ene Lagunzad.

From advice on how to make an impact during the application process (make sure to do proper research about the company you’re applying for!) and how to deal with the stress of a new, high-pressure work environment (don’t be too hard on yourselves, and be ready to deal with different kinds of people), the insights from people who have seen a lot across the board are nuggets of gold for people who have yet to start their careers.

HAUL TIME

To test students’ knowledge of everything about careers, first jobs, corporate lingo and systems, their own university, and NYLON Manila, another Kahoot! game was held—and the competition was fierce. The three fastest and most accurate participants earned themselves a Sunnies Flask and a HelloLulu bag.

But we couldn’t let all of the students go without some highly-coveted goodie bags to remember the event by! Each participant went home with a NYLON Manila tote bag loaded with gifts from CetaphilSolasta JewelrySunnies Face, and ARTernative Art Supplies.

ARMED AND READY (HOPEFULLY)

nylon manila career fair: university takeover up diliman college

Before things ended, Rain hosted a final panel Q&A session with the speakers, where students got the chance to ask about things like negotiating a better salary (Mads advises to be very clear with asking what the company can offer) and navigating leadership and the workplace at a young age (don’t dismiss the value of a good team).

As we wrapped up at UPD, students from different disciplines hopefully learned a thing or two about preparing for the next stage in their lives. It’ll take a lot of work, but preparing to be open to all sorts of opportunities and challenges and taking the initiative to learn (like, say, from a Career Fair) is a good start.

If you missed out on the first two legs of our Takeover, don’t fret. For the next and third stop of the NYLON Manila Career Fair: University Takeover, we’re headed to the other side of Katipunan! Get ready Blue Eagles, because on September 30, we’re off to the Ateneo de Manila University. See you at Escaler Hall!

One could never have enough cafés to hang out at, and once you find your go-to spots, it almost becomes like a home. A good café is like a good coffee itself—a nice blend of what you love. With good food and drinks, a vibe that matches yours, a comfortable space catered to what you need, and a commitment to taking care of the community it cultivates, a little café can be a safe space for so many people.

Bringing the drinks, the treats, and the vibes from Makati to Pasig is Odd Cafe, a favorite among the quirky, trendy youth of the metropolis—and for good reason. The OG Makati branch has become a go-to for students, young working adults, and people from all walks of life who appreciate a good drink and a cozy space. They’ve also popped up as stalls here and there during different events, bazaars, and weekend markets you may have been to!

Odd Cafe recently opened their new branch on the second floor of the Crescent Condominium at 29 San Miguel Ave, Ortigas Center, Pasig, with new, branch-specific plant-based goodies and a promise to serve the community as creatively and deliciously as they can.

IMMACULATE VIBES

Something that makes both Odd Cafe Makati and Odd Cafe Pasig stand out in all their quirkiness is how they’re both hole-in-the-wall places that earn popularity through social media and word-of-mouth. Their brews, the café’s aesthetic, and their plant-based offerings, are all fresh, innovative, and creative.

“There’s a discovery aspect to it,” owner Via Villafuerte muses. Through this sense of discovery and how regular customers bringing in more, the community aspect is formed as people come to appreciate the quirky, fun, and chill vibe that Odd Cafe brings.

The Odd Cafe aesthetic is very modern retro, cozy casual. There are couches you can just sink into, tables where you can focus solo or co-work with other people, and even a section that can be closed off where meetings or lunches can be held. The wide space is colorful and playful without being overstimulating. While it can be busy at times, you can still find some peace and quiet in here.

From all-day brunch plates to rice bowls and pastas of all shapes and sizes, their plant-based menu puts a twist on familiar classics. Think a “hashbrown” made of mushrooms, ricotta, and microgreens.

There’s the mildly hot Kimchi Fried Rice with homemade kimchi, the creamy and peppery Bucatini Cacio E Pepe, the savory Fettucine Mushroom Ragu, and more.

Their sandwiches are also flavorful and filling, like the Menchi Sando with homemade shokupan and menchi katsu and the Philly Cheesesteak with Demi Glace on a baguette and loads of sauce. Plus, the crunchy layers of the sandwiches are ASMR TikTok-worthy.

You can check out the full menu of Odd Cafe Pasig here. Don’t worry if you don’t have anyone to yap with, too. The food will keep you silent and satisfied. But also, Odd Cafe has its own mascots, Via’s cats Luna and Hugo, who wander around the café and bask in guests’ attention.

COFFEE & COMMUNITY

Odd Cafe is also known for their specialty plant-based beverages, particularly coffee. Specialty coffee is a culture in and of itself, and the community that patronizes it is growing in number. Coffee has become a hobby, a foundation in which people bond over. From specific beans, blends, and roasters, specialty coffee is concerned with quality and new ways to enjoy and consume the beverage.

Odd hires baristas who know their way around beans, roasters, and techniques. “Our baristas are trained to make and serve speciality coffee,” Via shares.

The café is known for its bestsellers, like the heavenly, vanilla and cinnamon espresso-based French Kiss, caffe mocha Mud Shot, horchata Oddchata, and more. They’re also known to use oat milk in their beverages, a good alternative to cow milk.

matcha sassy sapphire oat milk

Odd Cafe Pasig branch introduces four new drinks bursting with color and flavor: Sassy Sapphire, Charming Topaz, Playful Emerald, and Tokyo Cloud. The Sassy Sapphire, which tastes a little bit like the cereal Honey Stars, is oat milk mixed with Curacao Blue. The Charming Topaz hits you with a pleasant surprise at first as the mango puree adds a fresh twist to an espresso with oat milk and chocolate syrup.

For all the matcha lovers (and honestly, non-matcha lovers), the Playful Emerald is Odd Cafe’s blueberry-infused twist on an iced matcha. Finally, the Tokyo Cloud plays around with texture and flavor with black sesame seeds over vanilla and oat milk. Any of their beverages, from coffee to cocktails, are perfect to have in your hand when you attend an Odd Cafe event.

The café sometimes hosts events at the space, like Drag Brunch or mini live shows. Like in anything they do, Odd Cafe puts their own twist on it. For instance, their upcoming Drag Brunch isn’t just a drag show with food—it’s partly a fundraiser to support the Blood Cancer Alliance of the Philippines on Blood Cancer Awareness Month. Coffee, brunch, a drag show, and a good cause? Sounds like a perfect blend to us.

If you’re interested in checking out this new space, head on over to the Crescent Condominium in Ortigas now and grab a drink—or grab a seat.

What You Need To Know About The Latest It-Girl Approved Bag, The Hobo Bag

Just a cute little bag for the 'fit.

Style, versatility, and utility meet in the hobo bag, the latest it-girl bag all the girlies are rocking.

With hobo bags making a comeback, there’s been a lot of buzz about their resurgence in the local fashion scene. These bags have become a staple of many OOTDs recently and a favorite due to their practicality, as they can be worn over the shoulder, keeping hands free. While some attribute their renewed popularity to new brands, others argue that hobo bags have been a staple in the local market for years. Let’s take a closer look at this trend and explore the story behind the hobo bag’s enduring appeal.

A NOD TO A WORKING PAST

While these bags have grown in popularity as of late, their history extends decades. Hobo bags, also called slouch or crescent bags, have an interesting past dating back to the early 1900s. They were originally used by migrant workers and hobos who needed a durable, spacious bag to carry their belongings. These bags were usually made from canvas or leather and featured a long shoulder strap and a relaxed, slouchy shape. Essentially, it was started by the working class who needed a practical bag for their work.

During the Great Depression, their popularity grew due to their practicality and affordability. It was during this time that hobo bags became symbols of freedom and independence, allowing people to carry their essentials while traveling without being tied to one location. This inspired the relaxed design of the modern hobo bag, first seen in 1936. The bag became popular in the 1960s with the hippie movement, featuring tassels and other symbols.

Though it faded in popularity, it made a comeback in the late 1990s and early 2000s as part of the boho-chic trend, thanks to celebrities like Sienna Miller, Kate Moss, and even the Olsen Twins. Today, hobo bags are valued for their stylish practicality and come in many modern styles.

MULTI-PURPOSE DIVA

Aside from its simple yet appealing design, hobo bags have also made many fans because they are spacious enough to carry essentials like wallets, keys, phones, and laptops, while remaining lightweight and comfortable for daily use. They are versatile and can be styled with various outfits, whether dressed up or down, making them suitable for both casual and more formal occasions.

And, going by its history, hobo bags also symbolize hope and resilience, serving as a reminder of people’s ability to survive and thrive during tough times.

MOMENT IN POP CULTURE

Just like with many things in fashion, the hobo bag has found itself inside the pop culture zeitgeist once more. The bag saw a resurgence with new designs released in mid-2023, and similar styles quickly followed as it flooded Pinterest mood boards and seen on the arms of stars like Taylor Swift and Kendall Jenner. Among its many modern iterations, the Saint Laurent Le 5 à 7 Leather Hobo is quickly becoming a favorite for anyone looking to level up their style. Its chic and roomy vibe makes it the perfect companion for those busy days when you want to look effortlessly cool.

Then there’s the Bottega Veneta Jodie bag, which is all the rage right now. With its sleek hobo shape that casually hangs over your shoulder, it’s made from top-notch materials and comes in various sizes. Whether you’re running errands or hitting a night out, this bag adds that perfect finishing touch.

FOR THE LOCAL GIRLIES

If you’re shopping online, plenty of local brands are selling them on their websites and social media platforms, such as GVN, AZTRID, Big Bag Theory, and Alberto. It’s super easy to snag one even if some of them don’t have a physical store. And with their trendy social media campaigns, hobo bags became the go-to for style-conscious girls. They also lend themselves well to anik-anik girlies with how easy it is to attach charms, keychains, and other fun attachments on them.

Regardless if you prefer the more affordable options or a designer piece, the beauty in hobo bags is its simplicity, so don’t overthink it and let the bag speak for itself.

So, is it worth the hype? Yes, as an investment piece, which is also kinda ironic given its working class roots. Hobo bags are worth the hype because they offer tons of space for those who like to carry everything with them. Their slouchy shape and flat bottom are design favorites, and they’re easy to open and close. Plus, they’re perfect for staying organized or traveling light. Though, it also doesn’t help to keep in mind its history with migrant workers before you decide to spend two months worth of salary on a piece or see it as just another cool girl moment.

There are plenty of foundation applicators that have ebbed and flowed into the public consciousness. However, the brush vs. sponge vs. fingers debate still rages on. So which one is the best? According to Jake Galvez, “The best tool is the one you feel most comfortable using.” While this does vary depending on the coverage you’re after, he states that the comfort level of the person applying the makeup carries the biggest weight. Jake stated that, for himself, he prefers to use his fingers for quick application that results in a natural finish.

The days of 2016 full glam are behind us, and, with it, comes the death of blindingly bright highlighters (sorrows, prayers). An easy way to tone down the sparkle? Mix your liquid highlighter with foundation. Jake says this provides a more luminous, “glowing from within” finish to your highlight, making it more appropriate for everyday.

If you’re an on-the-go girlie/guy, you’ve probably experienced your fair share of makeup malfunctions. For Jake, the solution is setting spray as rehydrating the face is key to being able to troubleshooting your look. He even recommends carrying around a spray bottle with water if that suits you better. Then you can reapply powder after for the longevity.

Kids’ Newest Slime? Skincare

line
It's all about skin for many kids these days.

Forget playing with slime. For Gen Alpha, it’s all about their skincare game.

Related: This New Local Skincare Brand On The Scene Is Made For And By Filipina Skin

Kids from all over the world have seemingly graduated from mixing glue to make slime and instead fancied themselves concocting retinol with glycolic acid as their latest hobby. Granted, I bet we all had a moment in our childhood where we played chemists and mixed different colored shampoos in the shower, but this time is quite different.

For what seemed to be just a silly and cute TikTok trend became the introduction for kids’ beauty standards and idea of what is cool. But well, beauty is both a blessing and a curse; who would’ve thought that a craze of product hoarding, Gen Alpha’s obsession with luxury skincare, and eventually, a deeper layer to the beauty microcosm of femininity would happen just because of a simple, “hi, get ready with me to bed”?

KATIE FANG EFFECT

You probably saw the viral video of the girl crying in her sped-up get ready with me TikTok video because she didn’t want to go to work. Relatable content, no doubt, it garnered millions of likes, and a flock of girls flew to the comment section in empathy, flooding “girl same” with crying emojis. We can’t help but conclude in endearment that that’s girlhood.

But to define girlhood as overconsumption has been bonepicked countless times. Sadly, kids exposed to this content don’t necessarily see the harm.

@katiefanggg

This is so sad

♬ original sound – Katie Fang

Her array of Drunk Elephant products created the phenomenon we now know as the Sephora kids in the West. Tween girls are being reported on live TV for doing the skinfluencer’s signature bronze drops serum and moisturizer mix before layering her foundation on the store’s test products.

It’s concerning, but isn’t skincare supposed to be healing? Why are we scrutinizing kids for wanting to take care of themselves? More often than not, however, there’s a thin line between developing an interest to bond over and the possibility of setting ridiculous beauty expectations and shopping addiction at an impressionable age.

SALON MOMS

Let’s give a little leeway. It’s true; skincare has always been a part of your mom’s vanity, no matter what. It was unavoidable even, almost innately there. The number of used cotton balls because of Eskinol must have piqued your curiosity then, and it was only in due time that you could buy your own set of prettily packaged creams, or so your mom assures. You name it, facials at the local mall, manicures, and pedicure dates– it was very common to have been hyper-vigilant about your skin given the exposure from your sisters and girl cousins too about what beauty means.

However, the new set of TikTok momagers has gone rampant, with even one of them having their three-year-old do a skincare routine for a video. In true beauty and skincare influencer fashion, other kids would also narrate (at least for those who can speak already) their days in a fast-paced tone, sharing their plans for the day with their moms or their assignments at school.

It’s quite the gimmick, and it takes guts for supervising adults to let kids be perceived to such a vast extent online. Meanwhile, the pressure to have the latest skincare craze is on for the other kids watching behind the screen. It’s tough to resist when the FYP works that way and brands emulate nostalgic or candy-like scents and packaging in their cosmetics.

BEAUTY IN A BOTTLE

Where has childhood gone to? Perhaps it’s too complicated to answer with one line. The idea of growing up in this day and age extends to many related webs, and the concept of beauty is entrenched there, domineering as our first taste of envy and, likewise, performance for the big world.

via GIPHY

While it isn’t inherently wrong for kids to care about their skin, these are kids we’re talking about, and 10 year olds being overly obsessed with trying the latest serums and creams before they even reached puberty does raise some eyebrows. Consumerism knows no age limit sadly, but we also have a part to play in letting the next generation know that it’s ok for kids to be kids and there’s no need to have all that skincare in grade school. That GRWM TikTok video can wait, bestie.
