As SB19 famously sang, “Yeah, we gonna go up.” After making history as the first-ever Filipino act to be nominated for Top Social Artists at the 2021 BBMAs, the group is looking to make further history as they were just nominated for Best Southeast Asia Act at the 2021 MTV EMAs.

SB19 FOR BEST SOUTHEAST ASIA ACT

The nominations were revealed on October 20, Wednesday, and SB19 was the sole Filipino nominee in the category. In fact, they are the only local act to be nominated at the 2021 MTV EMAs. The other nominees include Ink Waruntom from Thailand, JJ Lin from Singapore, K-ICM from Vietnam, Lyodra from Indonesia, and Naim Daniel from Malaysia. The Best Southeast Asia Act category was first added in 2013 and past Filipino nominees include Ben&Ben, who was nominated last year, Nadine Lustre, James Reid, Moira dela Torre, and Sarah Geronimo. If SB19 wins, they join Sarah Geronimo as the only Filipinos who won the category as she won it in 2014.

OTHER NOMINEES

SB19 aren’t the only artists with Filipino roots nominated at the 2021 MTV EMAs though. Olivia Rodrigo makes her debut at the EMAs with five nominations: Best Pop, Best Song, Best Push, Best US Act, and Best New. Filipino-American rapper Saweetie is also nominated for Best New alongside Olivia. On the K-Pop side of things, BTS, BLACKPINK’s Lisa and Rose, Monsta X, NCT 127, and TWICE are nominated for Best K-Pop. BTS is also nominated for Best Pop, Best Group, and along with BLACKPINK for Biggest Fans. In general, Justin Bieber leads the pack with eight nominations, followed by Doja Cat with six.
