Picture this: You’re standing in front of your closet, frantically searching for something to wear that isn’t your go-to graphic tee or those trousers you’ve worn one too many times this week. It’s the peak of August, and the weather isn’t making it any easier to get dressed without breaking a sweat. We’ve all been there—sweating over our wardrobes, trying to balance comfort, style, and this month’s sulky weather.

But worry not, because we’ve done the heavy lifting for you. We’ve sifted through endless racks to bring you a selection of wardrobe essentials that you can rely on, no matter what life throws your way. These are the pieces that will keep you stylishly comfy, no matter the occasion or curveball.

adidas Gazelle Bold – Jhez Roxas, Art Intern

adidas Gazelle Bold has quickly become my new favorite pair of sneakers. Ever since I got them, they’ve been my go-to choice for any outfit. I absolutely love their platform design; being on the shorter side, I’m always looking for footwear that adds a little extra height, and Gazelle Bold is perfect for that. Whether I’m dressing up or keeping it casual, these sneakers have become an essential part of my wardrobe.

adidas Handball Spezial Shoes – Gelo Quijencio, Multimedia Artist

Recently, I’ve loved incorporating colors into my outfits, and very recently, I’ve been into pink-colored clothing items (specifically light, cool pink ones). The adidas Spezial hits my criteria: comfort, aesthetics, and plus points for being pink. To spice things up even more, I added pink and silver charms to the laces to add personality.

Design Almighty x Nami Trinkets Star Bloom Tea Collection – Maggie Batacan, Editor-in-Chief

The moment I laid eyes on these tea-themed pieces, I knew I had to get some. As a tea girlie, these necklaces speak to my soul. They’re so dainty and girly and pretty and demure and mindful (LOL). They just make me really happy to wear and look at, and I find myself reaching for these pieces anytime I feel like I can get away with them. Even the simplest outfits can be elevated with these, they’re literally so gorgeous.

Hellolulu Emma Mini Everyday Totepack – Precy Tan, Copywriter

As the designated mom-friend of my group, I’ve always been on the hunt for spacious bags that can handle all the essentials without sacrificing comfort. My latest obsession? The Hellolulu Emma Mini Everyday Totepack. This bag has quickly become my go-to for daily use. It’s roomy enough to hold everything I need, from snacks to chargers and everything in between, without the bulkiness that often comes with larger bags.

What really sets this totepack apart is the comfort it provides. Unlike other backpacks that end up digging into my shoulders, the Emma Mini is a breeze to carry around all day long. Plus, it’s super stylish and adds a nice touch to any outfit. And despite using the shade Linen, I’ve found it incredibly easy to clean, which is a major bonus.

Memo Denim Jacket For Women – Nica Glorioso, Features Writer

This denim jacket from MEMO is a new staple I added to my closet. It’s affordable, comfortable, and classic, with a structure and cut makes it so flattering.

Shop Solasta Jewelry – Bianca Lao, Brand Associate

I was exposed to Shop Solasta earlier this year at an event I attended, and upon receiving a charm bracelet from them, I instantly fell in love with the brand and immediately visited their site. Solasta Jewelry offers a wide range of charms and products that can fit literally any personality. It’s become a staple piece in my outfits, and I often find myself browsing their page and discovering new charms to purchase or add to my collection. Highly recommend their Italian Charms!

The Midi Arc Bag from The Paper Bunny – Jasmin Dasigan, Production Associate

I have to admit, I got budol-ed by a workmate who was using this bag, and I couldn’t resist getting one for myself. The Midi Arc Bag from The Paper Bunny may look compact, but don’t let its size fool you! What I love most about this bag is how surprisingly spacious it is. It comfortably fits my laptop, makeup bag, and other daily essentials without a struggle. Plus, it’s super stylish, which is a huge plus compared to other office bags I’ve tried that are just way too bulky and cumbersome.

Uniqlo Pajama Set – Raf Bautista, Managing Editor

I don’t know why it took me so long to cop a Uniqlo pajama set, but I’m happy I finally did. It’s very comfortable, size-inclusive, and I can rewear them multiple times a week

So, as you head into the final weekend of the month, celebrate the moment, and with the help of some new music. Below, check out the recent drops that we’re constantly replaying on our playlists.

NAMUMULA – MAKI

Maki’s serve streak remains unbroken with his new single about falling in love with a girl who doesn’t share the feeling.

SANDAL – JAMES REID

James Reid is back in his OPM era. Stripped down the core with acoustic elements and smooth vocals, the track serenades a simple gesture of romantic affirmation with accessibility and finesse.

CRAZY – LE SSERAFIM

LE SSERAFIM made this specifically for the girls and gays, and we love them for that. Bonus points for including the Iconic House of Juicy Couture in the music video

SILENT CRIES – JOSH CULLEN

Ok emo Josh Cullen, we see you. This emo-laced, guitar-driven song, which serves as a pre-release single for his upcoming album, sees Josh turn inwards for temporary refuge and puts a front to conceal some vulnerable moments in his past life.

PALAGI – TJxKZ VERSION – TJ MONTERDE AND KZ TANDINGAN

Just fell to our knees after listening to this (that’s a great thing).

GOOD AS BAD – ZEROBASEONE

Songs about K-pop boy groups in love always feel good on the ears.

SMOKE – JAEHYUN

That was kinda hot actually.

ALGORITHM – CHUNG HA

You can always count on mother CHUNG HA to put the Pop in K-Pop.

I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE – SAM SMITH AND TAEYEON

A mother and monarch joint slay? Yes!

BLACK OUT – CHANYEOL

Some might think it’s OA, but Chanyeol has a point that it can feel like you’re going to black out without that special someone in his moody but upbeat new track.

SANA – KIANA V

Sampling her father’s track Sana Maulit Muli and a rapturous R&B-tinged ode to her parents, Kiana’s blissful new single speaks to the universal longing for second chances and the enduring power of love.

JOY OF MISSING OUT – ALEXA

AleXa’s pop-punk era continues in this anthem for introverts that celebrates the joys of solitude and self-reflection. We feel seen and heard.

LUMIMOT SA’YO – JAYDA

Yes Jayda. You better tell him that you have better things to do with your time in your latest power ballad. It’s a taste of the vocal serves you’re going to get from her new album Sad Girl Hours.

BENDING THE RULES – FLO

The harmonies, vocals, and production came together to say that this track has the vibes on lock.

NYLON Manila Picks: Our Favorite Movies, Songs, And Shows Of August 2024

line
A few of our favorite things we watched and listened to.

From gag-worthy collabs from Lisa and Rosalia and Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars to jaw-dropping scenes, we got our entertainment fix this August.

Related: NYLON Manila Picks: Our Media Faves Of July 2024

Is it the end of August already? Well, time does fly when we’re enjoying the content we consume. And this month, we kept ourselves busy with both new releases from movies and music as well as old discoveries that brought us to those better days. Take a look at the media we obsessed over this August 2024 below, and who knows, you might find a new fave, too.

SB19 AND ALAMAT DANCING TO MAHARANI – MAGGIE BATACAN, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

@alamat.official Lakambini, kami na lang ng @SB19 Official ang iyong lakan. Eyyy!🫶 #MAHARANI #ALAMAT #SB19 ♬ Maharani – Alamat

This video lives rent-free in my head. I have replayed this video so many times and I have no intention of stopping anytime soon. I am relatively new to the SB19 hype train, so I’ve been thoroughly enjoying all the content that is fed to me by the algorithms. But give me a video where my current bias (FELIP) is serving over 9000 aura and style points? Please. It also gave me a greater appreciation for the song’s choreography in general. You can see the traditional influences and it just warms my heart to see it.

DIE WITH A SMILE BY LADY GAGA AND BRUNO MARS – MAGGIE BATACAN, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF AND RAF BAUTISTA, MANAGING EDITOR

Maggie: I think my Pinoy Card would be revoked if I didn’t mention this. Two of the most powerful and popular vocalists of this generation coming together to create the Philippines’ new go-to karaoke power ballad? YES. This song just absolutely slaps. The harmonies are on point. The video feels familiar but fresh in its stylings. The costumes are instantly recognizable and memorable. And, of course, the guitar solo featuring the strobe lighting and Lady Gaga’s slo-mo dance is instantly iconic.

Raf: All I can say is, as a Little Monster since 2011, I feel like my prayers are finally being answered with all this new Gaga content. She and Bruno gave us a Shallow 2.0 moment, and I’m eating it up.

ALIEN: ROMULUS – RAF BAUTISTA, MANAGING EDITOR

I hold the Alien franchise in high regard as it is one of my favorite movie franchises of all time. And I’m happy to report that Alien: Romulus made my inner fan happy. Set after the events of Alien but before Aliens, while surprisingly managing to tie itself to the wider universe of films, Romulus is a wild horror thrill ride from start to finish that does not relent. It may have a few stumbles, but those weren’t enough to ruin the experience. And the movie is highkey gorgeous, too.

THE ENDING OF UN/HAPPY FOR YOU – RAF BAUTISTA, MANAGING EDITOR

Whosever idea it was to put Moira’s Paubaya over the final scene of this movie needs a raise stat. The emotions were on high for Zy and Juancho’s final goodbye. It was strong enough to have tears shed in the cinema (which happened in the cinema where I watched the movie). Feelings were felt fr.

NIKI’S BUZZ ALBUM – BIANCA LAO, BRAND ASSOCIATE

NIKI’s newest album, Buzz, broke my heart into a thousand pieces, but also somehow put it back together. My personal favorite from this album is the song Magnets, both for the instrumental and the lyrics – they hit so right. If you have the time, let yourself be immersed in this album, you will not regret it.

REMEMBERING SUNDAY BY ALL TIME LOW – NICA GLORIOSO, FEATURES WRITER

Remembering Sunday by All Time Low is one of my all-time favorite songs. For their 20th anniversary as a band, they re-recorded it as part of their The Forever Sessions – Vol 1 album of greatest hits. In this version, Lindsey Stirling provides her badass violin skills, and the iconic bridge is sung by frontman Alex Gaskarth’s wife Lisa in a vocal performance that straight-up gave me goosebumps.

NEW WOMAN BY LISA AND ROSALIA – GELO QUIJENCIO, MULTIMEDIA ARTIST

Refreshing concept, vocal tone, beat, and the music video concept (plus points are the fashion and beauty direction of the mv). It’s definitely a new side of Lisa and I am here for it.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK – PRECY TAN, COPYWRITER

This month, I revisited Top Gun: Maverick, and it was just as epic as I remembered! Even though it’s not the latest drop, it’s the perfect mix of thrill and nostalgia that’s super easy to get into, especially compared to some of those other plane action movies that can be a bit much. Miles Teller totally steals the show (seriously, he made me tear up), adding so much depth to the story. On the downside, it was a letdown seeing Manny Jacinto barely on screen and with no lines—he could’ve brought some extra fire to the high-flying action.

Gabe Pineda

Gabe Pineda Is A Content Creator Putting Power In Truth On TikTok

line

Forget the monetary incentives and clout. If you want to help bring change to the world, you first and foremost have to stand with the truth.

Related: 8 Young Filipino Changemakers Amplifying The Youth’s Voices On The Global Stage

It might seem easy to understand that the truth is the truth and a lie is a lie, but we live in a post-truth world where that dynamic is no longer certain. You don’t have to look far to see people spread lies as truth and facts don’t hold as much sway in forming public opinion as it once did. Just scroll on TikTok, especially in the Philippines, and you’ll eventually find people peddling misinformation like the modern currency, and often with little to no repercussion for it. It’s almost as if it’s wrong to be a good person these days.

But there is still hope, and, at the very least, TikTok content creators who don’t subscribe to fake news and false information as reality. Some are brave enough to speak the hard truths, like 26-year-old content creator and musician Gabe Pineda. Gabe, like other vocal content creators such as Mathilda Airlines and Eli San Fernando, has been using TikTok to remind people that actually, it is important to speak facts and that we should have those difficult discussions about the problems facing the Philippines.

FACTS ONLY

Gabe is no stranger to making what some would say divisive content on TikTok. He first began making videos on the platform in 2021 right before the start of the 2022 election season. You can imagine how heated his comments section got at that time. It got to the point where he had to step back and take a break from the political content. But with his return to the platform, he’s ready to speak his mind. “I would say I tackle the root of what we’re experiencing now, which are social issues because I believe that these are just manifestations of ignored principles that we have as Filipinos,” Gabe tells NYLON Manila.

Beyond just politics, the Gen Z content creator sets his sights on what netizens are debating online, from the West Philippine Sea to women’s rights, and more. These aren’t easy topics to discuss, or they often lead to polarizing reactions from viewers. But as Gabe sees it, these problems won’t be addressed unless they’re brought to the public discourse. “One way or another, if we’re going to start radical change, or if we want to see some sort of change in our society, someone has to talk about them.”

@gabe.talks if women can be around lesbians wearing whatever they want. then maybe, clothes are not the problem. #women #womenclothing #objectification #fyp ♬ original sound – Gabe Pineda – Gabe Pineda #AtinAngWPHSea🇵🇭

This desire to use his platform for the good stems from the fact that Gabe knows firsthand what it’s like to be left on the sidelines. “I came from a really, really poor family background, and I know how it feels to not have the support that you need, maybe from the government, maybe from people that you want to support you,” he shares.

While his family didn’t have much growing up, Gabe was still taught that how you are measured as a person is not by how much you have, but by how much you give to your neighbor. This somewhat altruistic view of seeing the world and sympathizing with people even though you’ve never experienced what they’ve been through became the North Star for the content creator Gabe is today.

PUSHING BUTTONS

When it comes to topic selection, everything is fair game for Gabe. Instead of a written script, he uses outlines on his Notes app, all supported by deep dives and heavy research on the topics. His content is often a collection of separate ideas put together. But the result is videos that always get to the point about a certain issue as Gabe unapologetically lays down why we should care about certain things. He said what he said.

It’s this confident and outspoken approach that has led Gabe to amass over 200,000 followers on TikTok and some of his videos reaching millions of views. The tea is hot and it needs to be said. But Gabe also knows that there needs to be boundaries on what he’s willing to push. “As a content creator, even if you were talking about the truth or things that are difficult to talk about and are morally upright, there’s a certain limit that I put to myself, wherein am I just talking about this to ride a high horse, or am I really talking about this to spread awareness and information.”

@gabe.talks Hindi mo sinayang ang boto ko Madam Senator @Risa Hontiveros #aliceguo #fyp ♬ original sound – Gabe Pineda #AtinAngWPH🇵🇭 – Gabe Pineda #AtinAngWPHSea🇵🇭

Social media is a double-edged sword, and Gabe isn’t shy to admit that. “I think for the most part, social media has become so glamorized in every aspect. I think a lot of what people show on social media has been fine-tuned. I think most of the time it’s geared towards monetization and not authenticity.”

The algorithm can be cruel with how it puts only what’s polished and optimized on your feed. But Gabe doesn’t subscribe to that and goes for that middle ground of being real while keeping what’s private, private. “I like to keep things private, pero open at the same time, if you get what I mean. I want people to see me as someone very honest and someone who’s very comfortable with their skin.”

ON SOCIAL MEDIA FAME

As you can imagine, standing up for what’s right in the Philippines isn’t always easy. Sometimes, it can feel like talking to a brick wall, or worse facing open hostility. You don’t have to tell that to Gabe twice. But in as much as some Filipinos can be stubborn with their beliefs, Gabe feels that the megaphone still needs to be on.

“I believe that as much as we have a lot of great attributes as a culture, as Filipinos, we have a lot of things to dismantle and unlearn, and we cannot do that. We cannot dismantle and unlearn certain things pero at some point you’re going to have to sound aggressive to make some noise, pero in a way that you don’t trample beliefs, and you kind of pique their interest.”

His newfound following and larger platform have even affected how Gab sees himself. While he started out making videos about topics he cares about, and to this day that’s how he still sees it, that isn’t the case when your videos dragging misogyny in the Philippines and calling out the mentality of some Filipino Catholics get millions of views.

@gabe.talks If Jesus existed today. #jesus #religion #fyp ♬ original sound – Gabe Pineda #AtinAngWPHSea🇵🇭

“I had someone book me and they labeled me as a key opinion leader, and I did not know what to feel about it, because I do not see myself as someone like that. I’m a normal guy. But now it’s starting to sink in that I have to be careful with my actions and the things that I say, because it holds weight, not like before that.”

Success on social media isn’t always the slay some people think it is. There are real consequences to becoming a mini-public figure whose content is about exposing bad apples. “I hold myself to a higher standard now than I did before,” says the content creator on his newfound virality. “And the way it affected me mentaly is that as much as I want to be as good as possible, I think it gets tiring at some point to have people look up to you every single time. It’s not about fun, it’s about holding myself to the regard that I hold other people.”

Still, while the downsides of social media fame are real, not to mention the target Gabe has on his back with how unapologetic he gets in his videos, the good fight keeps him going. “When we strike the balance between being respectful and especially if you’re grounded on the truth, there’s nothing to be afraid of.” He adds, “I believe that as long as I’m grounded with the truth and morality, even if it’s tiring, I know I can push forward.”

BE A GOOD PERSON

With so many things going on in the Philippines, Gabe has no shortage of topics to be the star of his next video. And Gabe, who despite having a music career he can fall back to, doesn’t see himself stopping fighting the good fight anytime soon. “I don’t think I’m going to stop, because I’m a creator by nature. I love creating videos. I love engaging with audiences. I love talking about certain topics that are not necessarily easy to talk about.”

It’s admirable for Gabe, along with other content creators, to keep going despite how heavy the topics can be. In an era where the truth is silenced, content creators like Gabe are having their voices heard. So does he see a light at the end of the tunnel? The answer, believe it or not, is yes.

“It gets to me at some point that, what the hell are you doing?” he admits. “It would take a village of me to spark a change. But I believe in small changes. I believe in ripple effects. I believe that we might not see any changes in our lifetime. And that’s like speaking pragmatically and realistically. But I have hope for the Filipino people.”

@gabe.talks Umay sayo tita #angelicayulo #fyp ♬ original sound – Gabe Pineda #AtinAngWPHSea🇵🇭

This mindset is reflected in Gabe’s favorite video he’s ever done, one that speaks to the simplicity of being a good person. “If nothing truly matters, if we’re all going to die someday, why not use the life that we have to be kind and to help other people? At some point, you’re going to die, and that’s a really good motivation for myself to be as good as possible to people I meet, to be as welcoming and warm, to be as friendly as possible.”

At the end of the day, all Gabe wants viewers of his TikTok videos to know is that, while there’s a cost to honesty, that doesn’t mean we should be silent. “Never be afraid to tell the truth, but also choose when to say the truth. It can get hard to be placed in situations where you are held hostage with your statements and with the things that you say, but as much as possible, be honest. Say and stand up for the truth.“

It may be hard and even demoralizing to see what’s going on in the Philippines be treated as normal. But every crack on that ceiling is still a crack, and one day, it will break. And for Gabe, that means being a good person. But what exactly does that mean? “To be a good person is to do the difficult things that no one wants to do, to do things without reward, to do things without merit.”

As for his advice to Gen Z on how they can be changemakers in their own way, Gabe suggests to first stop making everything about you. “Some Gen Zs, including myself, can get caught in a bubble and be at the center of that bubble. And one of the dilemmas and hurdles that I had to get over was that not everything is about me, not everything is about you. And once you begin to understand that life revolves around something bigger than you, you get why there are people like me who talk about these kinds of things.”

@gabe.talks hey siri play “the man” by taylor swift on spotify. #theman #bear #doublestandards #fyp ♬ original sound – Gabe Pineda – Gabe Pineda #AtinAngWPHSea🇵🇭

Activism, or just standing up for your beliefs in general, isn’t about proving that you’re morally superior. It should be rooted in empathy and understanding. As Gabe puts it, “I don’t think that you need to experience hardship for you to talk about it. I think we have to demolish the idea that we need to experience something first to talk about it.”

Once you have that down, and you speak from a place of truth, honesty, and compassion, you can help start those small ripples that can lead to the change we all wish for, and you don’t need to have thousands of followers to do so. “If we are a little kinder and a little more understanding and empathic, we can make the world a better place, even in the small spaces that we have that you don’t necessarily need to have a platform.”

With Eyes Set Toward The Future, Andrea Brillantes Lets Go Of Sky Cruz and ‘High Street’ In Peace

line
With endings come new beginnings.

‘High Street’ is coming to an end, and Andrea Brillantes is ready to let go of a meaningful chapter in her career and start a new one.

There’s a certain calmness to Andrea Brillantes as she sets off on her farewell journey to Sky Love Cruz and mystery-drama series High Street (2024). As the series comes to its end, the 21-year-old actress looks back with fondness, and, like Sky, straight ahead with determination.

blythe high street andrea brillantes interview blythe senior high high street finale sky cruz death

Following its predecessor Senior High (2023-2024), High Street primarily follows Andrea’s character Sky as she tries to get to the bottom of Z’s (Daniela Stranner) disappearance and get through new dangers orchestrated by returning and new villains.

Set five years after the main events of the previous series, the mystery-drama explores what life is now like for the Northford High kids, facing new challenges and fighting their own demons as they try to navigate their young adulthood. From Sky’s quest for justice to the tumultuous relationship between Roxy Cristobal (Xyriel Manabat) and Archie Aguerro (Elijah Canlas), kidnappings to armed chases, the series covers plenty of struggle, loss, and triumph.

More than a thrilling mystery, it delves into the treacherous yet familiar road of navigating relationships in young adulthood. From breakups to career shifts, single parenting to familial obligations, the series paints a dramatized yet realistic picture of adulthood and all its grit and glory.

Andrea Brillantes stars as lead Sky Love Cruz, who is learning that her decisions and determination to uncover ugly truths may be putting her and the people she cares about in further danger as underhanded individuals seek revenge. As High Street comes to an end, we sat down with the young actress to delve into her thoughts on finishing up another chapter of her career, learning from her character, and having to tough it out in the industry without losing herself in the process.

LETTING GO

blythe high street andrea brillantes interview blythe senior high high street finale sky cruz death

“Mabigat na role for me si Sky Love Cruz,” Andrea admits to NYLON Manila. “And mabigat ‘din yung show all in all, but I feel relieved kasi it’s done—it’s really done.” It was the actress’ first time to have to hold on to a character post-show, due to Senior High getting a sequel.

Usually, she reveals, once a show is over, she lets the character go and the weight of the work lifts off. But this time was different. Andrea has been portraying the serious, driven Sky for over a year now. Regardless, she’s grateful and at peace with having another project under her belt.

“I’m just happy to let go of Sky—in a good way.” The character and her storylines are the central focus of the show—and the show delves into a lot more serious things than one would expect. It’s a drama thriller with justice, redemption, and revenge (as well as what it costs) right at its core.

DEFINING CHARACTER

blythe high street andrea brillantes interview blythe senior high high street finale sky cruz death

Each character in High Street is a difficult role for anyone to take, but thankfully, Andrea found kinship with Sky Cruz as well as with Sky’s twin sister Luna (whose death set off the events of Senior High).

“I am Luna sa labas, mas Sky sa loob. I am both combined,” she says. Luna’s visual portrayal compared to the simpler Sky was very dressed up and accessorized, with colors in her hair and lashes to the sky. “Mas kikay lang ako. Sa ugali naman, same kami [ni Sky]. Parehas kami na palaban, parehas kami na resilient. We have the same empathy, the same drive. We’re both hardworking and hard on ourselves.”

In High Street, Sky, driven by her sister’s (and Kyle Echarri’s Obet’s) death and haunted by all of the events of Senior High, embarks on a journey of justice. She becomes a journalist and works to get to the bottom of all the crimes committed by Senior High antagonist Gov. William Acosta (Mon Confiado), and then to uncover the secret plot that’s putting her and her friends in danger.

She also asserts that she really found similarities with Sky, and in knowing her character inside and out, she recognizes sometimes when things are out of character for the lead. “Ang pinakahindi ko lang siguro gagawin na gagawin ni Sky is mag-pursue ng relationship with my sister’s ex,” she remarks, referring to the romance that blossomed between Sky and Luna’s ex-partner, Juan Karlos’ Gino. “That’s it! But honestly, I feel like we just did it for the views! Sky would never.”

After her stint as Sky, Andrea now looks forward to a range of different roles, from kontrabidas to girlbosses (à la Do Do-hee from K-drama My Demon), stoic but softhearted queens (à la Hong Hae-in from Queen of Tears) to bubbly leading ladies (à la Kim Chiu). But, she says, she’s down for anything.

SHIFTING FOCUS

blythe high street andrea brillantes interview blythe senior high high street finale sky cruz death

With the challenging and serious material of High Street, it can’t be easy to go to work every day and put your all into it. Plenty of actors step away from roles or projects because of how taxing they could be or open up about how difficult it is to separate the personal from the professional—after all, acting requires someone to put so much of themselves into their work.

Although action, crime, thriller, and drama are staple genres in Philippine media, one could wonder how actors can go in and out of difficult roles without taking home all the trauma depicted in the story. Andrea, having had a long career at such a young age, finds that being busy helps. She also reflects that you can’t let your life be governed by just one thing—in this case, her career in showbiz.

@blythe I’m so happy to share to you the story behind how I started my journey with my new brand @Lucky Beauty Inc 🍀✨ Get to know more about the products as I share it tonight via TikTok Live! 😉🥳 #LuckyBeauty #LuckyBeautyLaunch #LuckyBeauty022623 #LuckyBeautyInc #fyp ♬ original sound – Andrea Brillantes

“I’m a very busy person,” the actress, content creator, and entrepreneur laughs, her exhaustion apparent. Before this interview, the team watched her spend hours filming promotional content for the series finale. She also is just weeks into the launch of her new fragrance line under her company Lucky Beauty. “So mabilis sa’kin magbanlaw ng heaviness. Kailangan ko siyang pakawalan, because after every scene, I’d have to do this, I have to do that, commit to this, reply to that.”

It’s a tiring life, to be sure, but the opportunities and the returns seem to be worth it for Andrea. Besides, she knows how to take the time for herself. Just last year, the young actress set off on a solo trip to Spain, taking the time to soul-search a little bit and see what the world had to offer. Her life can’t always be sets and stage lights.

She also surrounds herself with people who know her deeply. It keeps her grounded, amidst the pressures of work, social media, and life in general. “I talk to Bea [Borres] 24/7, so I’m always reminded kung sino ako,” she laughs. No one keeps it real like a best friend.

Years into a career that hasn’t been easy in the slightest (she started acting when she was 7, becoming a breadwinner at the same time other kids were in the middle of elementary school), Andrea’s found that “In any aspect [of] life, kapag pinuno mo yung sarili mo ng isang bagay lang, it will harm you.”

STICKING TO YOUR GUNS

As Andrea carves her own path, she’s learned a few lessons along the way, and not only because her career is one-of-a-kind. After all, like Sky Cruz, she is just a young adult trying to get through life herself.

“Have a thick skin, but a soft heart,” she advises. “Everyone will judge you, a lot of people will disappoint you. Kahit saan ka naman pumunta, ganun ‘yun.”

In a world where everyone can put themselves out there, and everyone can see so much of not just celebrities, but everyone from content creators to strangers, it’s far too easy to judge and be judged. The harshness of the world can lead us to close ourselves off and turn our hearts into stone, as Andrea says. But while a thick skin can protect you from all the judgment and criticism, whether it’s from the audience or a boss, you have to open yourself up to the good. Hence, the soft heart.

So wherever you choose to go, “Have your values and stick to it,” Andrea says. “Kahit ano mangyari, stay true and stick to your values. And if yung environment na ‘yun, hindi angkop doon, change your environment. Or help your own environment change.”

NYLON Manila Picks: The Food and Restaurant Faves We Raved About This August 2024

line
🍱🍔

August slipped away like a moment in thyme…but these food, snack, and restaurant favorites will stay with us forever.

Related: NYLON Manila Picks: Cafe, Restaurant, and Food Faves Of July 2024

August came in bursts of sunshine and rain, and we braved through it with some old and new favorites. From places that can satisfy your cravings to refreshing drinks, these food, drink, combo, and restaurant faves will have you hungry and salivating. We’re also going global for this round of picks, traveling to Vietnam, Hong Kong, and even Japan just with our taste buds. Don’t wait until your stomach growls—scroll on and find a new gastronomic fave below.

Crosta Pizza – Maggie Batacan, Editor-in-Chief

Every time I go to this little pizzeria in Salcedo the seats are packed, the standing room is suffocating, and the delivery boxes for pickup on the counter are piled high. Once you take a bite of these little masterpieces, you understand why instantly. The flavor and texture of the crust is perfection and the flavors of the toppings just hit different. The Basic B*tch and The Retiree are my current favorites. And when you upgrade to a spinach cream cheese stuffed crust – MAGIC.

Little Bao X Your Local Takeover – Raf Bautista, Managing Editor

Even if you aren’t familiar with Hong Kong’s Little Bao, this limited-time takeover was still worth the splurge. It was like American diner food with an Asian twist. The Pork Char Siu Bao was everything. But it’s the Ice Cream Bao dessert that lives in my mind rent-free with the mix of the crunchy fried Bao bun and decadent ice cream.

Vietnamese Milk Coffee – Bianca Lao, Brand Associate

For all the strong coffee loving girlies out there, Vietnamese Coffee is a game changer if you find the right beans. I’d recommend the Phuc Long Vietnamese Coffee Beans and to mix it with condensed milk. It’s a great mix of strong and sweet, and we all need that anyway!

Fat Seed’s LGBT – Nica Glorioso, Features Writer

The Fat Seed Cafe + Roastery’s LGBT (lychee, ginger, basil, tea) iced tea is a light and refreshing drink perfect for a warm summer day. The basil taste isn’t too intense, but it adds such a depth to the drink.

Drizzled Chicken Mac n’ Cheese & Butter Chicken – Precy Tan, Copywriter

I recently indulged in Drizzle Chicken’s best-selling combo of Mac n’ Cheese topped with buttered chicken, a meal that’s been buzzing on TikTok. And let me tell you, the hype was well-deserved. For just PHP 250, this meal is a cheat day dream come true. The creamy, cheesy mac n’ Cheese paired with tender, flavorful buttered chicken (with drizzle of your choice) is a match made in comfort food heaven. It’s a hearty, satisfying option that’s definitely worth the splurge.

Yayoi Beef Teppanyaki Set – Gelo Quijencio, Multimedia Artist

I love how the beef is seasoned to perfection with added freshness from the vegetables around. The set can satisfy your Japanese food cravings. It’s something I look forward to after a work day.

Couch Club Kapitolyo – Maria Sophia Andrea E. Rosello, Social Media Associate

@nicalagadi Café Diaries ✦ Finally visited this new homey cafe in Pasig! 🛋️🪴 So in love with everything — coffee, interior, food, and staff 🫶🏻 My #1 cafe so far! • with wifi, sockets, comfort room, and limited parking area • 10/10 for their esyen, mocha, and dirty ☕️ • generous serving!! highly reco their nachos for snacks • pet-friendly • super instagrammable 📸 Couch Club Kapitolyo 📍76 San Rafael St., Kapitolyo, Pasig #caferecommendation #coffeetiktok #foodieph #coffeeshopsph #aestheticcafeph #dateidea #locationideas #pasigcafe #wheretoeatmanila #esyen ♬ SWEET / I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE (feat. Brent Faiyaz & Fana Hues) – Tyler, The Creator

As an avid TikTok doomscroller, I came across this cafe on my For You Page, and they did not disappoint. The ambiance was comfy despite the size of the actual cafe, with their array of couches and seats I found it easy to get comfortable while eating their to die for ‘Mac N Chz,’ which was their take on your everyday macaroni and cheese. I am still thinking about that hot bowl to this day.

Wok It Out – Jhezrylle Roxas, Marketing Intern

Wok It Out has always been my go-to spot for comfort food. The first time I tried this restaurant in Rizal, I instantly fell in love with their food. They serve authentic taiwanese cuisine and delicious dimsums. My favorite in their menu is their taiwanese chicken chops that is perfectly tender and flavorful. I’m also a huge fan of their prawn dumplings, which are generously filled with shrimp. And I can’t forget the dessert that we always order which is the molten chocolate xiao long bao. Every dish I’ve tried in their menu is so rich in flavor and so satisfying that Wok It Out has truly become my favorite restaurant for comfort food.

It’s that time of the month again when our beauty stash is running low, and we’re itching to try something new. You know the feeling—your favorite serum is down to its last few drops, and your go-to lip balm is looking suspiciously empty. Whether you’re always on the lookout for the latest ingredients or trying to find the perfect product to add to your collection, there’s something satisfying about finding beauty buys that are worth every penny.

That’s where we come in. This August, the NYLON Manila team has put a range of beauty products to the test, from skincare to makeup must-haves. After trying, testing, and obsessing over the latest launches, we’ve rounded up our tried and true staples of the month. These are the essentials that refreshed our routines and are bound to become your new favorites, too.

Cantu Shea Styling Gel – Jasmin Dasigan, Production Associate

I’ve recently been all about sleek hairstyles, and while my trusty sleek sticks have been my go-to, I burn through them way too fast. That’s why I decided to switch things up with Cantu Shea Styling Gel, and let me tell you, it’s a game changer. The hold is seriously stronger than any other gel I’ve tried, making it perfect for my daily commute. It keeps my hair perfectly in place and fuss-free all day long.

GRWM Cosmetics Highlighter Topper in Skye – Gelo Quijencio, Multimedia Artist

A sparkly touch to your makeup, especially with the ‘Skye’ shade. Korean makeup is venturing into adding purple/blue reflective highlighters to add a pop of color to your face, and I am loving it. GRWM Highlighter topper has fine glitter, so it looks smooth when applied to the face.

GRWM Lash Booster – Nica Glorioso, Features Writer

The GRWM Lash Booster mascara primer seems a little intimidating with its fibers at first, but it’s now a staple of my eye makeup routine. It makes my lashes look longer and more defined, and it helps keeps the curl all day. It’s also waterproof and smudge-resistant. I tried it out with a mascara that I know doesn’t hold a curl very well, and my lashes stayed up better than if I didn’t apply the primer!

ISSY Gelée Moisturizing Liptint – Jhez Roxas, Art Intern

I absolutely love how the ISSY Gelée Moisturizing Liptint feels on my lips, it’s so moisturizing and comfortable to wear. When it comes to face and lip products, I always look for something that adds shine and keeps my skin hydrated, and this liptint check all the boxes. The moment I tried it, I instantly fell inlove. It gives my lips a glossy, healthy glow without feeling heavy or sticky, and plus points for the tint that it leaves on my lips.

K-Palette 1 DAY Tattoo Real Lasting Eyebrow Liner 24H – Maggie Batacan, Editor-in-Chief

This liner is a new holy-grail in my soft-glam office makeup routine, but I don’t use it for my brows. I actually use it as liquid eyeliner. Because the pigmentation is quite gentle it makes it easy to draw a wing that gives subtle definition to my eyes. The brush tip is also extremely forgiving so even when I’m in a hurry I can do my liner and not worry about having to redo my eyes if I mess up. (Shoutout to Thazzia Falek for influencing me to add this to my arsenal and teaching me to use it this way~)

Oil Absorbing Sheets & Blotting Paper – Raf Bautista, Managing Editor

I keep this in my bag for those moments whenever my face is not giving and need to wipe off excessive oils after a long day.

Sola Foundation Primer SPF50PA+++ – Precy Tan, Copywriter

I’ve recently been using the Sola Foundation Primer SPF50PA+++ and it’s truly been a game changer for my naturally oily and sweaty skin. This primer works wonders, keeping my makeup in place even on days packed with back-to-back meetings or outdoor events. The best part? It’s got SPF built right in, so I’m getting that extra layer of sun protection every time I use it.

Here Comes The Next Pop Girl For Your Radar: Griff

line
A multi-hyphenate that gives what needs to be given.

Take this as your sign to add Griff to your playlist ASAP.

Related: Maisie Peters Is Here To Prove That It’s Okay Being The (Good) Witch Of Your Story

What does it mean to be a pop girl? Is it measured in hit singles? Albums sold? Stage presence? A fun personality? Or a mix of all that and more? Regardless of what you think makes a pop girl, you can’t deny that a new generation of artists is working their way towards taking the mantle as the next batch of young women taking over pop. And there’s one Gen Z artist on the rise who has “next main pop girl” energy written all over her, and her name is Griff. While the UK-based artist may not be a household name (yet), her career has the hallmarks of a rising star.

Her music is filled with bangers that are equal parts personal and explosive. Vertigo and Miss Me Too are that bops. And with the release of her debut album, Vertigo, last July, she’s proving her musical chops. She also is very hands-on when it comes to her projects, from her songs to the outfits she wears on stage.

GRIFF

Most impressively, the award-winning musician has been co-signed by some of the biggest artists in the world and served as an opening act for superstars like Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, and Coldplay. And the hits keep on coming as later this year, Griff will join Sabrina Carpenter on the Short N’ Sweet Tour as one of the opening acts of the US leg. Griff is on the radar of all your faves if that isn’t proof enough that she’s on the come-up.

Get to know more about Griff in our chat with the artist below as we caught up with her during her recent trip to Manila.

Is this your first time in the Philippines?

Yes. I’ve been wanting to come here for so long. I’ve got a really close friend in London whos’ Filipino. We did some karaoke. I was drinking Red Horse. I had some food. I had some, like, fried quail egg (kwek-kwek).

You are also performing at UP Diliman for the We Play Here concert. You’ve performed in the biggest stadiums in the world, but have you ever done something like a school show before?

No, it’s not something we do in the UK.

So what was your reaction when you were told about the concert?

I was excited, because I feel like students are the best audiences. So that’s to me, that’s like, a great news, because it means the audience is gonna be cool,

If you had a concert in your school, what would be your dream lineup?

I would have loved to see, obviously, Taylor Swift would have been cool. Maybe Alicia Keys would have been really cool. And Whitney Houston. That lineup would have been cool.

GRIFF musician

You just came off opening for Taylor Swift in London for the Eras Tour. Could you recall the first time you met her?

I first met her at the Brits Awards a year before. She had won an award, and I won an award. So that’s when I first met but then I saw her again at a Kendrick Lamar concert.

So what was it like when she told you she wanted you to open for the Eras Tour?

It was so loud, I wasn’t sure I heard her. And I don’t know, actually, she just kind of mentioned it very casually. So I was just like, oh my god, that’d be insane.

Then you also made your dress for the show. What was that like getting to work on the look?

If I’m honest, I don’t know if I like it anymore. I didn’t have a lot of time. I was touring so much, and then I was like, I want to make my dress. And I had an idea of what I wanted to make, but I didn’t have loads of time.

You’re no stranger to opening up for the biggest arts in the world. There’s Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, and Ed Sheeran just to name a few. What’s it like whenever you prepare to open up to such massive crowds?

Yeah, it’s fun. Each crowd is really different, I think, you kind of learn what different crowds in different countries are like, and also, each artist is really different, but it’s always really nerve-wracking, because these are big venues. There’s so many people at their shows.

griff vertigo

From your years of performing, have you noticed a difference between being an opening act as compared to performing at your own shows?

There’s no feeling like doing your own show, because you know that everyone’s coming to hear your songs, and they want to sing back the lyrics. So I think that I would always pick my own shows over the support ones.

How does it feel to finally have your debut album, Vertigo, finally out after all this time for the world to enjoy?

Feels like a relief. Honestly, I’ve been working on this album for so long in between all of my touring. Like, if I had a week off or something, I would go and, like, book a Airbnb or something and write some songs, and I produced the whole thing. So it’s been, like, a lot of work, because it’s been a lot of going back, finishing productions, going back on the music.

Given how busy you were, was there a point where you felt like, oh, maybe I need a break, or were you just full steam ahead?

Of course there is. But I think also when you feel so grateful for all the opportunities that you just almost don’t want to stop you know, you want to, like, make the most of the moment.

Your mom often steals the show in your TikTok videos with how nonchalantly she reacts to you working with the biggest artists in the world. Could you describe your relationship with your mom?

My mom, I’d say it’s probably a very stereotypical relationship of anyone who has an immigrant mom of that generation, and then a Western daughter. She definitely doesn’t really care about pop culture at all, which I think is very typical of an Asian mum. When I was growing up, she was very strict, very loving, very tiger mum, but I think it’s definitely made me who I am today. I mean, her story is crazy. So I think I’ve always been very aware that my life is built off a lot of sacrifice off her, and everything I have is super privileged compared to what she grew up with.

griff miss me too

Touching upon your mixed background and multicultural heritage, do you feel that it plays a factor in how you approach your artistry?

Yeah, I think so. Growing up, it always put me a bit on the outside, because you don’t really fit in with any group. You know, I’m not really fully Asian, I’m not fully Jamaican, I’m definitely not white and British, so I think a lot of mixed race kids will probably experience the same feeling of like isolation, because you don’t feel like they belong to any group. That’s why I loved music, because it was like a thing that I felt like was a safe place.

When you make music, do you feel like there’s a difference between making songs in your bedroom versus making songs in the studio? Do you have a preference?

I always prefer making music outside of studios. Studios, for some reason, they feel too much pressure or something, which is why this whole album’s been made in like, Airbnbs. I think songwriting, like creativity, you have to be so relaxed in order to really feel like you can channel something. And so sometimes when it feels like you’re in a big studio, it’s too much pressure.

A lot of people see you as a rising star, even as one of the next main pop girls. But for you, what does it mean to be a main pop girl? Does that resonate with you?

I mean, it’s funny the word, pop. I never really loved the word. I never thought I could be pop. It’s only like the last couple years that I’ve managed to accept that word, because I think growing up, you didn’t see much representation in pop. You know, for me, that was a very like white thing to be a pop girl. So I think it’s cool now that the meaning of that word is shifting, and that’s like a narrative that exists now.

I think at the moment, we’re just seeing such incredible pop that it’s kind of a privilege to be alongside everyone you know. This year we’ve had the most insane pop girl music from Taylor, Billie, Charli, Chappell Roan, Sabrina, Olivia, like so much happening that it’s an exciting time to be a part of it.

For you personally, who are the other up and coming or young artists you love watching?

There’s a guy called Dijon that I really love. There’s a guy called Ryan Beatty, who’s from America that I love. In terms of pop girls, I would say Holly Humberstone, who’s a friend, I think she’s amazing, she’s back in the UK. Ethel Cain is amazing.

griff singer

As someone who’s been making music for years, what advice would you give to young artists who maybe are starting to figure out what they want or trying to see what’s meant for them?

I would say don’t think about it as a job. Just do it because it’s your hobby and you love it. I never thought I’d actually have it as a job. And I would say, just keep writing the songs. Like it takes years and years to find your sound. I’m not even sure I’ve still found myself, you know. And you’ve just got to ask yourself if you think what you make is the best thing ever, that’s what matters. If it’s the best thing ever, then it’s worth putting out. And if it’s not, then keep going and write something new.

If you were to meet someone who is not familiar or didn’t know who you are, how would you describe yourself?

I would say I’m a singer-songwriter from London who writes very emotional, euphoric pop songs. I love fashion, and I’m half-Chinese, half-Jamaican and I’m just kind of at the beginning of my pop career.

Elijah Canlas and Xyriel Manabat On Connecting With RoxChie and Putting The Best Of Themselves Into Their Work

line
When stars align.

Through banter and laughter, Elijah Canlas and Xyriel Manabat talk about holding everything they’ve learned from RoxChie, each other, and ‘High Street’ close to heart.

Related: 9 RoxChie Moments From Senior High and High Street That Have Kept Us Glued To Our Screens

What makes an onscreen tandem work—romantic or otherwise?

Powerhouse Gen Z actors Elijah Canlas and Xyriel Manabat may be saying goodbye to their High Street characters Archie Aguerro and Roxy Cristobal, and subsequently to the popular onscreen pairing of RoxChie—with a much-awaited happy ending, no less—but they will forever carry the lessons they’ve learned and the respect and admiration they have for each other with them as they go on with their careers.

From teen drama Senior High to its sequel, mystery thriller High Street, RoxChie as a tandem has gained a pretty large and committed following due to the actors’ chemistry and excellent acting chops, as well as the enemies-to-lovers storyline. Elijah and Xyriel, fond of their characters and passionate about telling compelling stories, portray the couple skillfully and with plenty of heart. No wonder they’ve earned themselves a following.

NYLON Manila sat down with Elijah Canlas and Xyriel Manabat to talk about RoxChie and High Street, their connection to the characters they play, and the dedication with which they approach their craft. Honest, eloquent, and humble, the two actors reflect on the journey they’ve had together and the journeys they want to take, excited for what comes next.

THE LONG ROAD

In the mystery drama thriller High Street, Elijah Canlas portrays Archie Aguerro, a former spoiled rich kid turned ex-convict on a path of redemption. Xyriel Manabat plays Roxy Cristobal, #1 Archie-hater turned weary working mother, who has been taking care of her and Archie’s son Riley. Riley was conceived after Archie and Roxy spent a vulnerable night together in Senior High, but Roxy was forced to become a single mother after Archie suddenly disappears.

After a five year time jump, and having spent the first part of High Street in prison, Archie comes back to Roxy’s life ready to take responsibility and seeking forgiveness and redemption. Though they eventually get their happy ending, the road to a happy family was long and arduous.

“Bitin,” they say of how they felt about closing the chapter on RoxChie. Elijah continues, “Bitin talaga, even for us, yung time together ni Roxy and Archie.”

“Sobrang dami pang potential,” Xyriel adds. At the beginning of the series, Roxy and Archie’s storyline was slow to develop given Elijah’s role in Batang Quiapo keeping him booked and busy. The actors admitted that they wanted more—a sentiment shared by their fans (who they are eternally grateful for and are always amazed by).

“We know our characters,” they say. “And we just want what’s best for them.”

If the actor had the chance to take Archie’s arc even further, he would have the character prove himself even more to Roxy and their son that he was a fit father. And Xyriel tacks on how wonderful it would have been to tap into the life of Roxy even more, explore her struggles as a single, teenage, working mom. But carrying on roles and tandems from one show to another is rare, and they enjoyed the time they spent with such interesting characters.

“At the end of the day,” Elijah says. “We’re grateful that we got to continue our characters’ stories, kasi napamahal din talaga sa’min si Roxie at si Archie.”

THE ART OF CONNECTION

Roxy and Archie’s growth as individuals and as a couple from one show to another, one episode to another, is perhaps one of the more rewarding things to witness on screen (besides that insane slap when Archie reappears in Roxy’s life). Though they’ve faced their fair share of challenges, with Roxy being a single mother and Archie being imprisoned, they deserved their happy ending.

You don’t have to be an actor to know that a character onscreen is complex—shaped and molded by its creator, its portrayer, its environment and the people in it, and even by the audiences watching. The more you can relate, empathize, and understand a character, the more you connect with them, regardless of how much you approve of their actions.

And even if both Elijah and Xyriel, and the community that was formed through RoxChie’s love story, wanted more out of their story, there’s no denying the impact they’ve had on people. RoxChie was received very well by audiences despite how volatile, combative, and frustrating their relationship was—which is a stark difference from Elijah and Xyriel’s friendship.

“Sanay [mga tao] na meron na agad na tinginan, may spark,” Xyriel observes. “Sa’min, wala.” In typical enemies-to-lovers fashion, RoxChie began with the two characters ready to scratch each other’s eyes out. But as time went on, as they both brought their walls down, as their love for each other shone through, both audiences and the characters’ portrayers grew more endeared to the two.

Elijah loved his character even more after seeing how people understood how complex Archie was. The role of Archie Aguerro was prime real estate for character development, and his arc from mean-spirited bully (Elijah calls him “evil” but also, correctly, a product of his environment) to caring family man was well-executed, largely due to Elijah’s ability to act his socks off.

Xyriel, meanwhile, masterfully played a young woman who had to grow up real fast when she got pregnant. Harried, stressed over finances and being a good mother, and doing it all practically on her own, Roxy went through a lot. Though some people viewed Roxy as tough on Archie when he came back, you can’t really blame her. You sympathize with her struggles and understand her resentment. The actress nails every intense scene.

“I think part of why people connected to [RoxChie], aside from the fact na unpredictable yung team-up, committed lang talaga kami sa mga binibigay sa’min,” Elijah says. There’s still an aspect of having fun with the role and the relationship as they played off each other and explored the many emotions and reactions of Roxy and Archie. “Whatever it is, we’re having fun with it. Sineseryoso namin, for sure, but nangingibabaw yung [aspect of] having fun with it.”

THE JOURNEYS TAKEN

Though Elijah and Xyriel have had different career trajectories, they approach their work with the same passion, dedication, and respect for the craft. They just want to push each other, surprise each other, and put the very best of themselves into their work. Elijah was trained for theater, taking lessons in the Philippine High School for the Arts. The actor brought his emotional intensity and range to the set of both shows, becoming a fan favorite despite Archie’s initial demeanor.

“Kaya niya mag-lead ng scene,” Xyriel praises the actor. “Pero kaya ka rin niyang i-guide.”

Xyriel Manabat, on the other hand, started out on television much younger, acting in shows like Agua Bendita. In 2017, she took a hiatus to focus on her personal life and studies, and came back an even stronger actress as Roxy in Senior High. From the breakup scene with Tim (Zaijan Jaranilla) to confronting Archie about his disappearance, she was quick to remind everyone exactly why she’s one of the best actresses of her generation.

“Xyriel is very observant,” Elijah notes. “Two things you learn in acting classes: an actor observes, and an actor listens. And that’s what Xyriel does.”

The two actors never miss an opportunity to praise each other, even after they joke around. “We care for each other, genuinely,” Elijah adds. Challenging each other, while respecting each other’s talent and skill, in an environment where they thrive creatively, brings out the very best in each of them.

THE ROAD AHEAD

Asked what he would say to dreamers who want to pursue a similar path to his and Xyriel’s, Elijah reveals the one truth he holds close to heart. “Be kind,” he says. “Be kind to yourself, be kind to everyone around you. The work will follow. Just respect the job, respect yourself and everybody around you.”

Xyriel’s career as a child actor, hiatus, and comeback have allowed her to explore different things and learn a wide array of lessons along the way. But she values humility in herself and in others above all. “Your talent will lead you somewhere, but your humility will take you [far],” she says. Though the bubbly, charming Xyriel can get along with anyone, she shares, she can’t stand people without humility.

Both actors seem to take their own advice. The warm, good-natured Elijah and modest, delightful Xyriel turn praise and pressure into pushes to do better. They’re thankful when they’re praised as some of the best actors of their generation, but they don’t let it get to their heads. “I’m a perfectionist,” Xyriel says. “Na-aappreciate ko naman, pero hindi ko pa siya talaga ma-claim for myself.”

“Embrace it!” Elijah urges her. But for himself, he holds a similar sentiment. The pressure is real, he remarks, and he takes it day by day, project by project. “I’m only as good as my last work,” he adds. “And there’s always room for improvement.”

Though there are no plans as of yet to reunite on a project (and trust us, they want to), Elijah and Xyriel remain grateful for the opportunity to work together. The two actors are already set to work on other projects—some already in the works before High Street came to an end—but wherever they go, they go with grace, true love for the craft, and a whole lot of heart.

DHRUV PRIVATE BLIZZARD

How To Deal With Your Own Private Blizzard, According To Dhruv

line
❄️

Dhruv talks about dealing with those numb days, meeting SB19’s Justin, making music in cafes, and more.

Related: Dhruv Is So Much More Than Just A Viral One-Hit Wonder

When we’re dealing with turmoil, it can feel like a battle of one against many. Whether rooted in the physical, mental, emotional, or a mix of all three and then some, personal struggle is often isolating in how nobody can relate to what you’re going through.

That was the case for Dhruv, who began work on his debut album, Private Blizzard, from a place of “numbness”. Like many of us, Dhruv was going through a personal slump, so he turned to what he does best to get out of it; make music. Most of the album was made in Nashville, which was a first for the musician, but Dhruv also turned to public spaces, like coffee shops, parks, and cafes, to hone the LP’s message and lyrics.

The result is a debut album that’s brimming with personal lyrics and big sounds and instrumentation as Dhruv goes through a gauntlet of turbulent emotions on his journey to find happiness. During Dhruv’s recent trip to Manila where he, among other things, gave a lucky few Filipino fans a first listen to the album before its release, we had a chance to sit down with the artist as he opened up about his Manila experience, coffee shop music making sessions, and more.

So how was your experience like being back in Manila?

It’s so great. Every time I come here, I’m overwhelmed by the amount of warmth, the love for music that Filipino fans have, and everybody here is just so kind and generous. Every time I’m here, you know, people will give me gifts, and it’s just very sweet.

You had a mall show and SB19’s Justin was the opening act. What was it like getting to meet him?

He’s lovely. Given how talented he is, he’s such a modest and sweet person, and very down to earth. Very, very cool.

As someone who has been getting those travel miles recently, what do you think is the most underrated part about getting to travel the world?

I guess something that I never really thought about as a musician was just like how different parts of the world react to music. I think that’s a part that I find super fascinating now but not a part that I thought about before. Like, I remember in Korea, for example, like the crowds seemed really quiet, but they were just really listening and like, they were so polite. And then obviously it’s just like how different people interact with music, how do people listen to it.

For Private Blizzard, you said that this album was like a seasonal thing where you went through different phases of your life. What was it like to go from that winter part of your life to finding happiness or the joy aside through like the spring and summer songs?

I mean, it takes a lot of time, and it’s when you’re in the winter period, it’s hard to imagine that there will ever be a spring period ever again, but I guess that’s one of the best things. And the worst thing of life is just that it’s like they’re opposite. But with those songs specifically, I found that the process of making the music just made me feel better as well.

So starting the album, I was maybe feeling a little jaded, a little more cynical, and then as I kept making music, fell back in love with the process of it. It’s reflected in those final few songs, which were also made towards the end of the process.

In making this album, you spent your time in coffee shops and public places before you honed the sound in the studio. How would you differentiate the experience of writing music in a public place versus getting to work on it in a private studio?

So I find it very inspiring to be around people. I take inspiration from people’s conversations sometimes and some studios, not all studios, but a lot of studios, can feel quite sterile actually, which is not what people would think. But there’s something about booking a room to make music that adds a level of pressure to it. And there’s something that feels so natural and ordinary about sitting in a coffee shop among people who do very different jobs and do different things, that takes the pressure off of it a little bit, I find.

But also, like, the studio is good for some things. So when you’re really trying to work on the musical elements, the musical aspect. I’m not singing or humming when I’m in a coffee shop. I’m typically working on lyrics or ideas for songs. So there are different parts that work better in different environments as well.

Did you find working on Private Blizzard in different locations shape or affect how you approached the project?

100%. London is a place that I feel very inspired by, in part because I am obsessed with the musical history of the place, like some of my favorite artists and albums were born out of the city. So I feel way more inspired there than I do in other cities. And I also just feel more romantic about the world.

A huge part of this album specifically was like walking and basically strolling around and listening to the music a lot, trying to absorb it in that way, and trying to imagine what somebody who is maybe commuting from work, or like walking to see their friends, how they would experience it. And London is a great place for that.

You said you prefer people to listen to the album from start to finish. So what goes into making a tracklist?

Well, with this album, there’s definitely a seasonal level to it and in terms of chronology, at the beginning of the process, I felt a certain way, and at the end of it, I felt lighter. I felt more optimistic and more hopeful. But also with an album as heavy as this, I knew that I wanted to end it on a note that felt more optimistic, more positive. And then there’s certain songs that just feel like they have to go together.

So it’s a mix of lots of different things. On the one hand, it’s definitely intuitive, but on the other hand, there’s a lot of like cerebral type of thinking going behind it as well, where you’re thinking kind of about the overall themes of the album and how they all connect with each other in a track list.

When we first chatted with you three years ago, you were just coming off the success double take. Now, you’re traveling the world and playing your new albums to fans. Did you imagine that you would get here or find yourself in this position?

Maybe in that moment, like maybe I did in that moment, there have been many moments since when I haven’t, because it’s really hard to know. It’s amazing because it gives you a platform, it gives you exposure. But then it’s also like you have to think about how to follow it up and how to convert a moment into a career.

That’s a very stressful thing to think about. And so for me, you know, they’ve been so many moments of doubt. So lots of questions kind of creep up, and it’s hard to imagine that you would be able to do something like this when you’re sitting in that position. But I’m very grateful for it, grateful for this tour. It’s so fun.

What advice would you give to your fans or listeners on how they could deal with or how they could navigate their own private blizzard?

I guess, if I’m thinking about the last two years of my life, what I would say to myself with the hindsight that I have to step outside of the private blizzard a little bit. I’m somebody who likes to really sit in my blizzard, and I think it means that I don’t always get to enjoy the present moment. So if I could go back in time, I would tell myself to step out of it and find ways to enjoy the now. Stop dwelling, stop thinking about the future. Enjoy the present as much as you can.
