Gianna Sibal

How This 22-Year-Old Filipina College Student Went From Having Four Followers On Wattpad To Being A Published Author

line
She turned a hobby into a career.

Gianna Sibal first got on Wattpad to read One Direction fanfiction. She now has millions of views on her Wattpad novels and just published her first book, all while still in school.

When you think of Wattpad, what comes into your mind may be fanfiction, Y/N stories about boy band members, or just other weird works of fiction. But the platform is also home to many good writers and compelling pieces of work. It can be the starting point for young writers to get their name out, build a following, and achieve greater things.

This is where Gianna Sibal comes in. This 22-year-old Communication major started writing stories on the site to near-zero attention. But over time, her stories blew up to millions of readers to the point where she just published her first book. NYLON Manila caught up with the young author to talk about her beginnings, writing on Wattpad, and what it’s like being a published author at 22.

HOW SHE GOT STARTED

Gianna’s passion for writing stories started when she was in her early teens. She said that she would read full-length novels “cover to cover in less than a day (maybe two), nose stuck in a book during lunchtime and on the bus ride home.” After a while, she soon found herself thinking of her own characters and stories that she has never read but would want to read. “So, I wrote them myself. Because who else will?”

For her, she enjoys the medium of writing because of the feeling she gets from reading her work. “After writing a chapter, I usually read it afterward because I can’t believe na wow. Did I write that? I was able to write that? That gives me a sense of pride and fulfillment because I genuinely enjoy what I produce and put out.”

Every great writer and expert in any field, in general, has to start somewhere and the same goes for Gianna. When she started writing her own stories, they were, as she puts it “truly, truly bad.” She expounds “I had a vague idea of what I wanted to happen but I didn’t know how to get there—walang outline, wala talagang planning, and the writing was just really awful.”

BEGINNINGS ON WATTPAD

Gianna found her way to Wattpad in 2014 when she made an anonymous account to read One Direction fanfiction. But she soon found herself reading other original works of fiction on the site and felt inspired to do the same. “I didn’t want my words to dry out, stuck inside a notebook or in the Notes app of my phone. So, I gave it a shot.”

The genre that Gianna writes about is romance and new adult, which is basically a genre of fiction where the protagonist is a young adult between the age of 18-30 years old. She gets the ideas for her books from the things she sees and experiences around her. But the romance novels that Gianna writes aren’t just the typical romance novels you find at a bookstore. “I write what’s unconventional in love—they’re not just to tug the heartstrings out of kilig, but also something that will leave a mark on my readers even after reaching the last page or sentence—to feel as heartbroken as the characters, or to feel as devastated or as happy when the book ends.”

Her book writing process starts with the premise or title. After that, she makes the setting and then the characters. Once the initial world has been established, she makes an outline of what happens in every chapter in bullet points. Gianna tries to keep the word count of her chapters at around 4000-5000, but she has gone up to 7000 words per chapter. A full novel usually takes her around four to five months to finish, but if she is working on a WIP (work in progress, ongoing story), she has chapters pre-written so that she doesn’t get pressured to write quickly.

3 MILLION AND COUNTING

When Gianna started uploading her work on Wattpad, it was more of a hobby and the response was lukewarm. She would only get a few dozen views and just a handful of followers. But that changed in 2015 when she got her first hit book. It was a teen fiction book (it’s no longer on her page) and the first one she gave serious effort into finishing. She then followed it up with another teen fiction book that blew up as well.

But to hear it from her, she has a love-hate relationship with those books. “I believe people liked [the first book] because the chapters were very, very short, it was so shallow, you know, yung pampakilig lang and the writing was quite subpar (at least, to my standards now).”

She continues “I started another teen fiction book (this one is up on my profile), and this also got a lot of attention. It was still very bad then, but I edited it when I was 18 and even though I cringe at it, people still love it and continue to read it. I tried deleting it once and a lot of people bombarded me with messages and pitchforks saying “WHERE IS IT WHERE IS IT PUT IT BACK UP!!!”, so I did.”

Those early books though serve as a reminder for Gianna of where she started, but to this day she finds them “pretty cringy and my worst work to date (Typers.net).” But she later adds “Thank you to all who enjoyed and continue to enjoy it, though.”

Gianna’s success hasn’t stopped since and as of this writing, she has written over 10 books, with one of them being published. She also is a Wattpad Ambassador and a Content Associate for Wattpad Philippines Paid Stories. Her views have balloned as well, going from just a few hundred to over 3.3 million and counting.

PUBLISHED AUTHOR AT 21

But Gianna would soon get her biggest break to date in her professional writing career when she recently signed a publishing contract with Cherry Publishing and published her first book called The Blueberry Boys. Gianna said that she got the offer via email, but this email stood out from the others she gets for a special reason. “The person who emailed me from Cherry detailed what happens in my book, so I know that she read it. Some recruiters kasi email just because of my following or my views, but this one definitely read it, and that earned my trust and I decided to sign with them after several meetings.”

She initially though did not want to sign with Cherry Publishing. As she explains, “I cried after my first meeting with Cherry because I knew I’d have to hand over the rights to my book, and I couldn’t handle it at that time because I spent months slaving over each word, each syllable, each page.” But her mindset changed when she talked to her close family and friends and remembers being told, “Hanggang Wattpad na lang ba talaga ang talent mo?”

“I know I’m still young and I still have a lot to learn and improve in my craft even though I’ve been writing for years, but I think there’s genuinely nothing wrong with wanting to take a step to my dream. In fact, I think it’s a feat na I’ve become this at 21—a published author at 21,” she said. Gianna added. “I still can’t believe it, because when I wake up, I’m still a daughter who has chores, I’m still a working student aiming for high grades, and I’m still—you know, the same old Gianna who writes. I’m just happy to have achieved that and that title this young, and I’m excited to see where it gets me and what more I can achieve as I continue to write.”

THE BLUEBERRY BOYS

If you want to read the book, you can buy a copy here. Gianna teases that the book is “more than just an office romance, more than just the f buddies-turned-lovers trope.” She said that the book deals with a lot of topics aside from romance like marriage, motherhood, and being POC and bisexual. “I wanted to go against what has been taught to us, women—you know, when you’re old enough and you’re established in your career, people—especially here in the Philippines—start to ask, “Okay, so when’s the wedding and the baby coming?” And I wanted Sabina to be the woman who can answer them with, Never.”

Gianna wrote the book from October 2020 to January 2021 and is more than 110,000 words long. Initially, she wanted to publish the book under a pseudonym, but she decided to use her real name because “my real name deserves to be on my book.”

THE STIGMA AND CHALLENGES OF BEING A WATTPAD WRITER

But despite the success Gianna has achieved at a young age, she isn’t immune to feeling like she is less than her achievements, especially since she mainly writes on Wattpad. “When you’re a Wattpad writer, cringe na agad because you think: Harry Styles kidnapped me, or Y/N fics, or possessive bad boys and alpha males” Because of this, Gianna has kept her identity on the platform a secret for years because she was afraid to be part of the stigma. She also describes feeling “crushing imposter syndrome”, how she sometimes compares herself to other writers and just thinks that she got lucky and is not a legit author.

These days though, Gianna doesn’t care anymore if they judge her work for being on Wattpad and does not hide the fact that she is a Wattpad writer, a successful one at that. At the end of the day, all that matters to her is that her readers and she herself are happy. “I still tear up in gratitude, kasi hindi pa rin ako makapaniwala that my works have an impact on people. No matter how small or how big, meron eh, and that’s something for me to be eternally grateful for.”

But if you think that you can just make a Wattpad account, write something in a few hours, and have a hit, think again. As Gianna explains “Forming a cohesive plotline and series of events and plot points is difficult—more difficult than you think, we lose brain cells doing this. There is research poured onto every single detail and the sentences you read have been backspaced and edited six, seven times just to find the right words.” She also says that there is pressure from other Wattpad users for authors to create content constantly, ignoring the fact that they have lives outside the platform.

BALANCING WORK AND SCHOOL

Aside from her work as a professional author, Gianna also finds time to focus on her studies as an incoming senior college student. She admits that finding a work-school balance was tough at first. “My mental health took a toll on me, then, and I promised myself that I wouldn’t disregard my wellbeing after that. It was beyond exhausting and I couldn’t find the time to rest. It was burnout after burnout after burnout.”

But now, she learned to do both things in her life and to do so in a healthy way. And for her, the key to that is prioritizing your responsibilities. “I make sure to write when I want to (which is almost every day), but of course, still prioritize my OJT and school on weekdays during work hours.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR GIANNA AND ADVICE FOR ASPIRING WRITERS

These days, Gianna is in a celebratory mood with the publishing of her first book and she’s currently working on some new content for Wattpad. “I took a step outside of my comfort zone and tried, for the very first time, to write something in Taglish, and I think that’s been very challenging and it’s keeping me busy so far.” She adds that she’s open to another publishing contract.

Gianna has a few words of wisdom for aspiring writers. She first wants them to write not just to chase trends. “Write what you want to write, because you’ll love your work then.” She also wants writers to not always stick to what they know and do things out of their comfort zone. “Continuously challenge yourself so that you can grow. Explore the limits of your writing, don’t box yourself into what you’re comfortable with.”

She implores young writers to remember that writing should be fun at its core and that if you aren’t having fun, something’s wrong. Most importantly, people should always remember to take a break and give themselves some me time. “You don’t need to write every day. Do other things you enjoy. That’s what’s going to make your work sing. Being human is central to being an artist and a creator, too.”

If you want to read Gianna’s work, check the Amazon Kindle and Paperback Editions for The Blueberry Boys, you can buy a copy via the US Amazon store here or the UK Amazon store here.

SB19, Olivia Rodrigo, And BTS Prove That It Is The Year Of Music Collaboration

Rumor Or Not, SB19, Olivia Rodrigo, And BTS Prove That It Is The Year Of Music Collaboration

line
Music gods, please let this be true.

Expanding the potential of songs and artists across many possibilities, music collaborations are the paradigm shift that keeps things fresh time after time.

Britney Spears and Madonna. Daft Punk, Nile Rogers, and Pharell. Dr. Dre and 2Pac. Eddie Van Halen and Michael Jackson. Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men. One cannot go through the rich history of music without touching on the unique coming together of forces that have truly shaken the status quo as we have known of it in different contexts. As with anything productive and progressive, collaboration is central to developing and eventually revealing the best of combined and cooperative efforts in whatever endeavor one seeks out. In music, the union of rhythm, lyrics, and points-of-view, which is of course bookended by artistic and commercial caveats, perfectly illustrate how collaboration is necessary to push not only the boundaries of sound, but of the general musical narrative as well.

Music collaborations are a special thing. While we’ve had a robust portfolio of duets, samples, and partnerships to leaf through, it still has maintained its premium over the course of time. Like astronomical events, these are rare occurrences that are almost always eagerly anticipated, if not left to fantasy. More often than not, these creative connections are unexpected, but despite that, it does everything from introduce artists to new audiences, leverage longevity, and well, shake the status quo.

Come Together Right Now

Keeping things fresh in music, collaborations have since risen to prominence in the recent years. Exacerbated by the saturation of the market and streaming services, artists have been compelled to seek out these paradigm shifts, evolving everything from their sound to the entertainment value as well. From featured spots and repetitions across a range of genres such as hip-hop, R&B, EDM, country, and latin music, the charm of collaborations has taken over other sonorous systems such as pop. Needless to say, and your playlists can prove this: just like the single-track culture, collaboration has become the name of the game.

Limited by the pandemic in so many ways, artists have looked through many ways to entertain and exercise sanity. While it proved to be very challenging, especially at the early onset of the global crisis, the creativity started to pulse through eventually, as encouraged by the dissonance of tradition. With the democracy taking charge in the digital landscape, where many have understandably taken refuge, more channels for collaboration were explored in animation, performance, and music production.

To say that last year was a great time for music collaborations is a severe understatement. It was glorious. With the likes of Beyonce and Megan Thee Stallion, Blackpink and Selena Gomez, and Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande among many, many, many others, the landscape was made even more dynamic with ballads, bops, and bangers, to either soundtrack or simply keep us company as we clocked in time after time in survival mode.

And by the looks of it, there is no slowing down on the front of music collaborations. With a lot already populating our playlists or those eagerly awaited it can definitely be said: music has brought us closer, in more ways than one.

Speaking of music collaborations, we list down some of these rumors and wishes that we hope will come true one day.

Stell and Jamie Miller

After exploding on social media with his short cover of Here’s Your Perfect by Jamie Miller, which has already been circulating as a vocal challenge on TikTok, Stell has not only shown off his expansive range, but his reach as an artist as well. With an impressive 1.5 million views as of this writing, the SB19 member has earned a lot of praise online, but the one sung by Jamie Miller himself is the most special.

“Hey @stellajero_, would you want to jump on ‘Here’s Your Perfect’ the remix?” the singer asked on Twitter. Setting timelines ablaze with this interface, fans have been eagerly awaiting what will come of this exchange. “Yes, me and Stell have spoken! You guys just have to wait and see! Such a fan! And can’t wait for the future,” Miller writes, following up on the potential of this music collaboration inching closer to reality. Can we all agree that this such a powerhouse of a possibility?

SB19 and Dawin

It isn’t just Stell who has caught the eyes and ears of an international artist, because some time in June, American singer and songwriter, Dawin, posted on Twitter a thought bubble of wishful thinking. “Dawin x @SB19official I love that idea,” he wrote, much to the delight of the supporters of the band. To compound his interest and admiration for SB19, the artist known for the track, Dessert, tagged them on Facebook, saying, ““Kumusta SB19 [?] (How are you, SB19?) You guys have great voices. If you want, we can make a song and sing together. What do you say?”

Obviously overwhelmed with the attention and praise, the boys of SB19 have been very vocal that they are open to music collaborations with both local and international artists, for as long as they really further their sound, and wave the flag of OPM as well.

Olivia Rodrigo and Rosé of Blackpink

They’re in your area. After YG Entertainment confirmed that both Jennie and Rosé of Blackpink are in Los Angeles to work on new music, the rumor mill went on overdrive when eagle-eyed fans spotted Rosé and Olivia Rodrigo having dinner with Devon Carlson (stylist) and Petra Collins (photographer and director). While it did appear to be casual, one couldn’t help but draw out a fantasy of a music collaboration between the darlings of pop, especially since they are both represented by Interscope Records. While it should be said that this bit of information should be taken with a grain of salt, things could prove to be sweet if this indeed becomes truth. No sour notes here indeed.

Kang Daniel and Kiana V and Jess Connelly

In a conversation with ABS-CBN News, South Korean singer, Kang Daniel was very upfront about wanting to link up with local artists in a music collaboration. Through his artists and repertoire team, the K-pop idol found the smooth and sensual vocals of Kiana Valenciano and Jess Connelly to be striking. “I listened to their song once when our A&R team recommended their music and it was very memorable,” he said. “So if I am lucky, I guess I will be able to have chances to collaborate with such good artists.”

You may know PJ Endrinal as Wally Nieves in FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano. You may also have seen him in supporting roles in Unbreakable, Jack Em Popoy: The Puliscredibles, and Just the 3 of Us to name a few. But did you know that he is also a singer and a talented one at that? The Star Magic artist has so far released three songs, Pag-ibig Nga Naman in 2018, Beauty Baby in 2019, and his most recent one, Di Man Ngayon in April 2021.

Composed by Gabriel Tagadtad and produced by Star Pop label head Rox Santos, the track is a pop-alternative song that sees PJ sing about his affection for someone special. His vocals on the song really sell the emotion of the track so it was only right that the music video for it would equally tug at the heartstrings.

When PJ Endrinal dropped the music video for the song, it did exactly that. And the best part is that the feel-good music video features none other than The Gold Squad themselves: Andrea Brillantes, Francine Diaz, Kyle Echarri, and Seth Fedelin.

DI MAN NGAYON

The Jed Regala directed music video starts out with Francine in her home. She answers the door to great Andrea who brought board games. Kyle and Seth soon follow and the four of them have special bonding moments like any barkada would have. But we also get to see KyCine and SethDrea have their moments in the spotlight and play a role in the story of the music video.

Di Man Ngayon has been described as a song about an expression of willingness to wait until the one you love reciprocates those feelings and the music video captures that mood. It’s a wholesome video that matches the vibe of the song and ends up making you feel happy and warm inside. Watch the music video for Di Man Ngayon below:

As the title suggests, this episode has important people from Deib’s and Max’s past come back which could significantly shake things up. Meanwhile, the conclusion to the investigation on Max’s attack brings with it some major revelations. Here is a recap of episode 8 of He’s Into Her The Queen Bee and The Shark. (Warning: Spoilers Ahead)

THE QUEEN BEE RETURNS

Episode 8 begins with Kim’s return to Benison. Deib and Kim go talk. She tells him that she is still in love with him and wants him back. Deib ignores her advances though and says that he no longer loves her because she broke his heart by cheating on him. This doesn’t deter Kim, however, and tells him that the more he resists, the more she wants him. Meanwhile, Max and her friends are talking. Ysay informs Max that Deib and Kim were close friends before they started dating and that they were each other’s first love. Naih tells Max that she should watch out and fight for Deib’s love.

Later that day, Deib and Max meet up at the basketball court. Here, Deib tells Max that he is no longer into Kim. He reveals that Kim left Benison to go to the US because she signed a modeling contract. Deib discovered that Kim kissed another guy, and he almost forgave her, but then he caught her kissing the same guy again. Deib says that when Max makes their relationship official, he’ll always stay faithful to her.

At The Barb, as Max is cleaning up, Kim confronts her. She asks Max if she likes Deib and Max doesn’t respond. Kim says that she still loves Deib and is very protective of him, which is why she wants to know if Max likes Deib. Max says that she doesn’t know yet and brings up the fact that Kim cheated on Deib. Max then roasts Kim by saying that if that is how Kim loves someone, Max doesn’t love Deib in the same way as Kim does.

PREMIUM LOVE

Episode 8 transitions to the friend group hanging out at The Barb. Migz watches a video of Hunter and Ysay dancing together and Deib asks him if he’s ok. Deib says that he can tell that Migz likes Hunter, which he fesses up to. Migz though knows that Hunter likes Ysay, so he doesn’t know if they’ll be together. Lorde then makes a comment that Migz could easily replace Ysay with the way he acts and Elle tells Lorde that he shouldn’t make stereotypes like that and associate certain things with certain genders.

Max then walks in and she and Deib talk. The two take a picture together and the others tease them about their relationship. Deib asks Max if he can open an account in her heart. Max replies by saying that he can only if he gets permission from his dad. Deib says that he wants to prove to Max’s dad that he is a changed man.

THE BIG REVELATION

Later on, Max and her friends are in The Barb. Max is about to send an email to RJ when Randall walks in. It is then revealed that Randall is RJ, Max’s ex. Randall asks Max if they can talk but she refuses. Her friends tell Randall to just leave and Madam Barb comes in and tells Max that she has a delivery to do. Randall offers to drive Max but she refuses. But her boss insists that she ride with him to save time. After the delivery, Max tries to brush Randall off but when she falls into his arms, their past memories together come rushing back and she agrees to talk to him.

In Randall’s car, Max asks, even demands him to tell her why he became a stranger to her. Randall reveals that when he went to the US, he had a hard time. He lost his spot for his basketball scholarship and the home he was living in was a toxic environment. Randall wanted to tell Max what was happening to him, but he didn’t want to be the boyfriend who just complains. He needed to be alone. When he came back to the Philippines, he tried to see her again and it was only now that he saw her. After taking what he said all in, Max tells Randall that she forgives him and accepts the fact that they are over, but that they can still be friends. Randall accepts that and they hug it out.

THE BIG REVELATION PART 2

The next day, Elle and Max are at home as Max struggles on how to tell Deib about Randall. Elle asks what’s wrong and Max informs her of Randall. Elle tells her that she should tell the truth to Deib because he deserves to know the truth. If Deib was honest with Max to show his dark side, Max should do the same for Deib. Max agrees and thanks Elle for her honesty which leaves Elle slightly bothered. In school, Max is about to tell Deib about Randall when Migz comes into the room and tells Max that the headmaster is looking for her.

In arguably the biggest revelation of episode 8, Max is informed that the investigation is complete and that Choco was the one who attacked Max. We then learn that Ysay is Choco’s step sister and she knew what Choco did. Apparently, Choco just wanted to hit her locker to scare her but Max fought back and she hit her head on the locker. Aimee then says Elle and Choco planned the attack while Khloe rats out Aimee saying that she also knew about the incident and even showed up to see if the plan would push through. (She was the one who ran away in the hoodie.)

Aimee feels betrayed but Kim says that was revenge for trying to kiss Deib. Ysay and Khloe get a one-week suspension for covering up for Choco and Aimee respectively. Aimee, Choco, and Elle, meanwhile, get expelled from Benison for their actions. All of this leaves Max visibly distraught.

THE FALLOUT

Back at home, Elle is crying while their parents are having a fight. Elle’s mom wants her dad to file an appeal and make sure that Elle doesn’t get expelled. Her dad though is angry at Elle and feels that what she is getting is a just punishment, a lesson learned of sorts. This leaves Elle’s mom visibly upset and angry. Elle and her mom then walk out.

Meanwhile, at The Barb, the friends are torn over what happened. Migz and Naih can’t believe that Ysay would do that to Max. Michiko though feels that they shouldn’t be too quick to judge Ysay. This then leads to a short argument between Naih and Michiko. Meanwhile, Deib is just worried about Max.

The final scene of episode 8 sees an emotional Elle and her mom move out of the house. Elle tells Max that she initially befriended her because she was scared, but that she saw the goodness in Max’s heart and felt that she wouldn’t destroy her family. Inadvertently, Elle was the one who destroyed her family. She apologizes to Max before leaving.

THE GHOSTS OF OUR PAST

Out of all the episodes so far of He’s Into Her, episode 8 feels like one of the most consequential with everything that happens and is revealed. First, Kim returns to Benison, and she means business. She’s not there to make friends and it’s clear that she wants Deib back and Max out of the picture. There’s no second-guessing who Kim is which is why Dalia Varde plays her so well and she really hams it up.

We also get to learn that Randall is actually RJ and Max’s ex. While ex-lovers of Max and Deib return into their lives, there’s a night and day difference in how the two are handled. Randall isn’t just portrayed as a dumb athlete who cheated on Max. He went through some serious problems when he was in the US and felt that he couldn’t talk to Max for understandable reasons. At this point in the story, we just saw Randall Echavez as the team captain of the Southbay Sharks. But in episode 8, we get to see his character fleshed out more and it’s nice to see Jeremiah Lisbo flex his acting skills here.

BIG CHANGES AND SHAKEUPS

Episode 8 is also able to highlight Elle and how she doesn’t have a cold heart. We get to see her get put through the wringer in this episode as Melizza Jimenez shows a more vulnerable side of Elle. Her and her mom leaving the house has some big implications for their family so it will be interesting to what happens next in the last two episodes.

It was also nice how in episode 8, the show was able to touch a bit upon gender stereotypes, how we shouldn’t automatically associate certain actions with a gender, and even the racism Randall faced in the US. Those are timely and important topics that should be talked about. Though more time could have been given to Migz’s feelings towards Hunter. It could be inferred in past episodes that Migz liked Hunter, but it would have been better if that was fleshed out a bit more because that conversation didn’t feel as important as it should be.

Overall, episode 8 is one of the most emotional episodes of the series so far and another strong entry. A lot happened in this episode and we’re curious to see how the series manage to address things by the end.

All The Times Nadine Lustre Supported Young Designers

line
Raising the standards for celebrities even higher.

Aside from her stance on sustainability, Nadine Lustre has been a huge supporter of young and emerging Filipino designers, too!

We stan a woman with a word of honor that uses her platform to uplift others around her. It’s easy to forget at times that the Nadine Lustre who raises funds to rebuild forests, purchases from small businesses, and advocates for mental health is the same person who won prestigious acting awards and the first ever Filipina to create a visual album in the Philippines. But what sets her apart in the blindingly flashy world of entertainment? She really walks the talk and supports local artists.

During one of my early shoots with Nadine Lustre two years ago, she’s taken notice of how the outfits she wore had a fresh and contemporary vibe. She immediately asked me, “where did you get all these? Can you send me the list ’cause I wanna change my style.” Now that we constantly work together, there’s a huge chance that the question’s already remained a blur, but as a stylist, I took that to heart. Every chance for her to get onstage or pose for a shoot, young Filipino designers are always prioritized. With most of the pieces commissioned, Nadine would make it a point to always ask who made the piece. She even tags them on her Instagram posts, recognizing the power of her platform. From old to new, here’s a list of all the times Nadine Lustre supported young Filipino designers—as most people should!

1. When most of her outfits in her visual album Wildest Dreams were made by young designers

For Nadine Lustre’s debut album, Wildest Dreams, and its accompanying 33-minute visual, she wore a series of show-stopping looks all created by young designers, most of whom admitted that it was their first time making a custom piece. It was the beginning of the pandemic and everything in the creative industry was in shambles, yet it’s still amazing to think how the team was able to pull it off. With the 50+ looks that made it to Wildest Dreams, if the designer wasn’t Filipino, it had to be an Asian talent. And the list wasn’t just limited to Manila, some of them were from the cities of Cebu, Iloilo and even London. The visual album also had Filipino designers who gained a cult following along the years like Proud Race, HA.MU and sculptor Herminio Tan. It was just a sign of things to come.

2. She purchases from small businesses instead of taking it as free gifts

One thing Nadine Lustre does is keep her word. Let’s face it, most online personalities are gifted by brands (others even demand in exchange for a post), but she chooses to support these businesses by not accepting them for free. Nadine recognizes how hard it is to run a shop, given she’s a business-owner herself, which is why she insists on purchasing their works whether it’s a painting, kitchen tools or jewelry.

3. She’s consistently on the lookout for rising designers to work with

As someone who’s very particular with her outfit choices, Nadine Lustre always looks for indie designers locally and internationally. She’s admitted in the past that her ultimate pet peeve is seeing someone with the same outfit and she isn’t wrong. You’d feel the same if you were in her shoes. Some of her memorable outfits include the Scorpion look by designer Thian Rodriguez from her birthday shoot, the chainmail outfit designed by newcomer Coleen Aytona that Nadine actually discovered on Instagram for her first NYLON Manila cover, and the black, sparkly gown that shut down the ABS-CBN Ball in 2018 by Dubai-based designer Garimon Roferos.

She believes that young artists like her have the same vision of going against the grain and the key people that she chooses is not only limited to fashion, but also her team of makeup artists, photographers, and music producers to name a few.
