What Made Crocs Cool Now? Get The Tea From People Working In Fashion

line
A fave for a reason.

From ‘comfortable choice’ to coveted style staple, Crocs is cooler than ever.

In the wild world of fashion, where trends sprout from the unlikeliest of seeds, Crocs have blossomed into an unexpected style sensation. Once our go-to clogs during childhood, these shoes strutted onto the cool kids’ block, becoming established as a wardrobe must-have even now that we’re adults.

With celebrity collaborations—think Crocs x Justin Bieber—and high-end brand partnerships like Balenciaga, Crocs seem to be only getting better with time. Becoming more than a mere fad, you might be asking yourself, what exactly propelled these shoes into becoming a bona fide style staple in the fashion scene? Here it from these it-girls and boys and young influencers working within the fashion industry.

Adaptable and Trendy

Adaptability and trendiness lie at Crocs’ newfound coolness. When fashion moves faster than a runway model, being able to keep up is everything. “I believe it’s the brand’s knack for adapting to the current style trends while staying true to its unique identity,” muses Cess Tan, a fashion content creator with an eye for flair.

Crocs effortlessly glide from laid-back streetwear to high-fashion statements, proving that comfort and style make the perfect pair. With a diverse array of designs to suit every mood and aesthetic, it’s no wonder Crocs have become the go-to choice for the fashion-forward crowd.

Comfort Doesn’t Mean Compromise

Comfort has always been a staple in the Crocs playbook, but they’ve managed to turn comfort into the life of the party without missing a beat. With designs that scream innovation and materials that practically throw a comfort party for your feet, Crocs provide support and cushioning while staying effortlessly stylish.

Visual designer Emz Geraldo captures the post-pandemic sentiment perfectly, likening it to being enclosed in a box of comfortability. He highlights, “Wherever is the most comfortable, that’s where we most likely vibe. Not only is it comfy, but it’s also versatile; it can be your footwear at the corner of your room or stylish statement slippers outside to match your y2K baggy pants!”

Marketing Strat? 10/10

Crocs’ triumphant return to the fashion limelight can be attributed to their marketing strategy, a perfect concoction of nostalgia, humor, and creative collaborations. By skillfully working through social media platforms and embracing the infectious energy of Gen Z culture, Crocs has brilliantly rebranded itself as the go-to accessory for the Instagram generation.

Echoing this sentiment, PR Manager Nicole “Bats” Batungbacal highlights the transformative power of collaborations. She says, “What makes Crocs cool now compared to before would be the collabs they have with other brands. I feel that it adds a different spin on how people can see the brand and how they can style it as well. Collabs are another way to add creativity and innovation to a brand, and Crocs has been doing very well in that area!”

Colour, Style, and Silhouettes

Now, we can’t ignore the starring roles played by color, style, and silhouette. It’s a party for your feet with a diverse palette of hues and patterns to choose from, accompanied by innovative silhouettes that cater to every whim. Crocs have become the Cinderella slipper for all—whether you fancy the classic monochrome or crave the spotlight with bold, eye-catching designs, there’s a pair to dance to the beat of your style.

As Content Creator and Fashion Design & Merchandising Graduate Zoie Garcia gracefully puts it, “I think it’s the new & experimental silhouettes that they have now!! So far away from their usual, basic silhouette, and I think people love how fresh it is!!”

From Formal to Casual Cool

From black-tie affairs to laid-back weekends, Crocs have cheekily waltzed their way into every nook and cranny of modern life. No longer reserved for the playground or sandy shores, Crocs have even become fashion chameleons for all ages.

As content creator Ivan Kervi keenly points out, “I guess one of the things that made Crocs trending nowadays is that they can be matched up with any outfits from casual to formal, and they are also comfortable to wear.” So, whether you’re strutting in your dressiest summer dress, kicking it in your comfiest sweats, or somewhere in between, Crocs are your trusty sidekick.

Jazzed Up with Jibbitz

Let’s not overlook the jazz-filled flair that Jibbitz bring to the table. These customizable charms provide wearers with the opportunity to infuse their Crocs with a personalized touch, elevating an already iconic accessory. Whether adorned with pop culture references, cute animals, or 3D designs, Jibbitz introduce an extra layer of individuality to Crocs.

As expressed by fashion content creator Zoe Vinluan, “The fashion world is so diverse now, and it’s honestly more of a ‘wear what you want’ vibe, where people won’t judge as long as you’re confident! People even embrace your style more if it’s curated to your own personality! And to me, when I see Crocs now, they’re just so cool being all jazzed up with Jibbitz you can customize! Plus, they’re so comfy, and you can literally pair them with so many outfits!”

All About the Crocs Echo Storm

With these sentiments and more, Crocs continues to push the boundaries, as seen in their latest drop, Echo Storm, a disruptor in streetwear fashion that’s turning heads and stealing hearts. Part of the progressive Echo Collection, this new sensation effortlessly fuses comfort with an entirely fresh form, breaking the mold in the world of footwear.

The Echo Storm blurs the style lines, toeing the boundary between clog and sneaker. Picture this: a molded upper crafted from Crocs’ eco-friendly Croslite material—the echo of the renowned Echo Clog, but now with an added twist. Enter the ultra-plush neoprene sock featuring lightweight mesh, ensuring a fit so snug it’s like a stylish hug for your feet.

Sure, you’ll find hints of the familiar, but the Echo Storm’s daring mix of materials propels it into a league of its own, far beyond the ordinary offerings from Crocs. So, if the choice between clogs and sneakers has you in a style dilemma, fear not—the Echo Storm is here, the perfect fit for those who dare to be different.

All The Times Beyonce Owned The Phrase “World Stop… Carry On”

line
An icon, legend, and the moment.

Only an artist like Beyonce can make the world stop whenever she makes a move.

From her Destiny’s Child days to being a global superstar, Beyonce has been a constant presence on our screens and playlists for decades. But despite being one of the most famous people in the world, Queen Bey still knows how to deliver a good surprise that has people literally stopping in their tracks. It’s not easy to be a known figure yet still keep fans guessing about your next move, but when you’re Beyonce, anything is possible.

After all, a queen moves at her own pace. One day you’re minding your business. and the next, you’re racing to check out Beyonce’s latest drop that can come out of nowhere. So, scroll down for a few moments when the multi-hyphenate superstar left the world shaking in its boots.

HER FIRST PREGNANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Ah, now that’s pop culture history. The year was 2011, and Beyonce was slated to perform Love on Top at the MTV VMAs. On a night that saw, among other things, Britney Spears receive the Video Vanguard Award and Lady Gaga dress in boy drag to debut her Jo Calderone persona, standing out in a packed show was no walk in the park. But that’s exactly what Beyonce did when she removed her jacket at the end of her exceptional performance to debut her baby bump and that she was pregnant with her first child.

It was a moment so iconic, that it held the Twitter record for “most tweets per second recorded for a single event” for a time. Beyonce would gag the world once more with her baby bump in 2017 when she revealed that she was expecting twins on Instagram, with her post breaking the record as the most-liked image on the platform at the time.

DROPPING THE SELF-TITLED ALBUM

The idea of a surprise drop in the music industry is nothing new. But Beyonce took that to the next level, when, out of the blue, she took to social media in December 2013 to announce the surprise drop of her sixth studio titled, Beyonce, which was developed as a visual album. Not only were fans treated to a new Beyonce LP, which housed classics such as Drunk in Love and Partition, but they also got music videos for each track on the album. It was a moment so legendary it inspired the line “World stop… Carry on” in Beyonce’s verse in Feeling Myself

IN HER COUNTRY ERA

When you’re Beyonce, announcing a new era is not just about dropping promo on social media and calling it a day. As always, the queen kept people guessing until the last minute. During the 2024 Super Bowl, a Verizon commercial she starred in broke the internet, literally, as it followed the musician trying to break the network’s internet with her stunts. Then, she decided to do it in real life by announcing the country-focused act two in the Renaissance Trilogy and surprise dropping two new singles, Texas Hold ‘Em and 16 Carriages

SURPRISE FORMATION DROP

2016 was a pivotal year for Beyonce, and it began with, you guessed it, a surprise song release with Formation. The track, which served as the first single off her Lemonade album, had social media talking (and white people angry) with how it dug deep into Beyonce’s black roots. A Super Bowl Halftime performance, calls for a Beyonce boycott, the release of the Lemonade album and film, and the Formation World Tour soon followed in what was a crazy time to be a Beyonce stan.

THE START OF THE RENAISSANCE ERA

While Beyonce didn’t go into complete hiding from 2016 to 2022, she did only release one solo studio album not tied to a movie or concert. As you can imagine, fans were starved for new Beyonce music. And that is what she gave when she teased and announced RENAISSANCE, her house-focused album that would kick off a trilogy of new LPs. When BREAK MY SOUL dropped, the people cheered as the Beyonce drought was finally over and got everyone moving and bopping. There’s just something so exciting about being there to witness an artist announce a new era after years of waiting.

HER DUBAI SHOW

When a single show that wasn’t even televised or officially streamed has its own Wikipedia page, you know it’s one for the history books. In January 2023, Beyonce held her first live performance since 2018 for a private show in Dubai to commemorate the opening of the new luxury resort hotel, Atlantis The Royal. It was an invite-only event, so it wasn’t a highly publicized show. But once news spread of Beyonce’s ballad-heavy concert, it became the only thing the internet could talk about with leaked videos flooding the internet. Considering it was this performance that gave us the Drunk in Love Dubai riff, the show was a moment for the fandom.

maris racal leading man anthony jennings snorene

Which Of These Actors Are Maris Racal’s Perfect Leading Man?

line
Correct answer: Rico Blanco.

Whether it’s revisiting past partners or new on-screen programs, one thing is certain: Maris Racal’s chemistry with her leading men always leaves that lasting kilig on audiences.

Related: Glimpse SnoRene From A Different Timeline In Darren Espanto’s ‘Iyo’ MV

In the wild world of show business, on-screen chemistry can make or break a film or television series, especially in the local scene where this phenomenon has been entertaining audiences since the early days of Philippine cinema in the 1920s. Loveteams are the foundation of Filipino television.

Back in the day, our parents were groovin’ to the tunes of Marvin Agustin and Jolina Magdangal. Fast forward to our current entertainment era, and we have new loveteams, such as the unexpectedly welcome SnoRene, the dynamic duo of Maris Racal and Anthony Jennings.

While we’re currently obsessing over these second leads from Can’t Buy Me Love, did you know that Anthony Jennings wasn’t the first to be teamed up with the fan-favorite Maris Racal? With a swoon-worthy array of talents from music to television, let’s scroll through the potential chemistry between Maris Racal and the following actors:

Anthony Jennings

First on the list is Anthony Jennings. Starting off as co-stars in the television series Can’t Buy Me Love as Irene Tiu and Snoop Alfonso Manansala, fans were suddenly caught up with this couple’s on-screen chemistry after a couple of interactions. Whether written intentionally or not by the producers, the ship name SnoRene was born, and social media snippets showcase how much they could make fans feel ~kilig~.

As if that wasn’t enough, these two starred in a music video that we can call out for its pure romance. Teaming up for Darren Espanto’s single Iyo, they proved that their chemistry wasn’t confined to the TV screen. Now, as we eagerly await the resolution of the current conflicts in the show, we can’t help but wonder if we’re witnessing whatever awaits Irene and Snoop.

Carlo Aquino

With a long list of must-watch rom-coms, 2022 brought us the ultimate tag team—Maris Racal and Carlo Aquino, starring in the online series How To Move On In 30 Days. Streaming exclusively on YouTube, it spins the tale of Maris’ character, who is reeling from a recent breakup. In a bold move to fast-track her recovery, she documents her trials and triumphs through vlogging while setting a deadline for her healing phase. But hold on to your heart emojis because the plot thickens when she recruits Carlo’s character as her fake boyfriend.

This isn’t just your run-of-the-mill rom-com; it blends humor and heartfelt moments, sprinkling in a generous dose of contemporary relationship chaos, social media shenanigans, and the ongoing pursuit of self-discovery. Without giving away too much—when it comes to tropes, nothing beats the charm of fake relationships.

Gelo Rivera of BGYO

Last year, Maris Racal stormed the music scene by releasing a music video for the track Carelessly. The anticipation among fans was met as Maris once again served and slayed with a stellar performance, living up to the hype. Adding an extra layer of excitement to the mix, Gelo Rivera of BGYO took the stage as her leading man this time.

According to the P-Pop soloist, the leader of BGYO caught her attention during rehearsals for the opening leg of Star Magic’s 2022 tour. Watching him command the stage, Maris had an epiphany—this guy had the face of a music video leading man, and boy, was she right on the money. With all that chemistry, this MV was as catchy as Maris’ single—a musical match made in heaven that was sure to keep us hitting the replay button for more doses of these two.

Iñigo Pascual

Before the era of SnoRene sprinkled its magic, 2017 introduced the dynamic duo of MarNigo, showcasing the on-screen chemistry of Maris Racal and Iñigo Pascual. If you’ve been on Team Maris since her PBB days, you know that their paths crossed through Piolo Pascual (Iñigo’s father), creating a narrative that led people to believe they’re like star-crossed lovers—until reality hit the brakes. Despite the rollercoaster of real-life heartbreaks and a fleeting romance, the pair gifted us with the cinematic gem I’m Ellenya L., a shining star at the 2019 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino.

The film tells the story of Ellenya Lakampati (Maris Racal), an ambitious girl who refuses to secure a stable job because her goal is to become a famous content creator. While enlisting the help of her childhood friend Peng (Inigo Pascual) to shoot content, what seems like a romantic comedy at first glance transforms into a witty commentary on today’s generation—addicted to the shares, likes, and comments they amass from their social media posts.

Khalil Ramos

Get ready for a wild ride through the afterlife in Simula sa Gitna, where Maris Racal and Khalil Ramos form an unexpected tag team in this spin-off series of Hintayan ng Langit. Forget the usual path to the pearly gates; this surprisingly dynamic duo is cruising through purgatory and hell, steering clear of the typical post-mortem route.

Beyond the gripping plot, which was inspired by Eddie Garcia and Gina Pareño’s 2018 film, fans are on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating the surprises awaiting this fresh pair. Without spoilers, envision an unpredictable life-after-death scenario, filled with friendship, humor, and maybe a bit of the unexpected.

ENHYPEN SPOTIFY

On Dreams And First Crushes: ENHYPEN’s New Spotify K-Pop ON Single Is A Full-Circle Moment

line
S/O to our first K-pop crush.

From one legend to another, ENHYPEN’s new Spotify K-Pop ON! Single is an ode to BTS and when their dreams first began.

Related: ENHYPEN Forges A Deeper Bond With ENGENEs Through ORANGE BLOOD As They Strive To Create A Lasting Impact

It’s no secret that the members of ENHYPEN are global superstars. From Seoul to Manila and beyond, they have touched the hearts of fans all over the world. But even with their star status, the members also have their list of faves who they stan, with a top artist being BTS. If you’ve followed ENHYPEN’s journey since the beginning, then you’d know that they are big fans of the K-pop supergroup. From their trainee days to now, you can always catch ENHYPEN giving their flowers to their seniors.

Recently, the group manifested their admiration for BTS in a big way with a cover of one of BTS’ most memorable hits, I Need U, for Spotify’s K-pop ON! anniversary for a moment to remember.

FIRST CRUSH

This 2024, Spotify’s global flagship K-pop playlist, K-Pop ON!, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Since its launch in 2014, the playlist has established itself as the ultimate destination for listeners looking to discover and enjoy the best music from the genre. As such, the streaming platform is celebrating the milestone by putting the focus on the artists that made us fall in love with K-pop in the first place.

Featuring the theme of “My First K-Pop Crush”, the Spotify K-Pop ON! First Crush campaign celebrates those artists that became our first stan, bias, bias-wrecker, and so much more.

In fact, we aren’t much different from our faves, because even K-pop idols had their first crushes in K-pop. This is why headlining the campaign will be ENHYPEN, SHOWNU X HYUNGWON (of MONSTA X), and STAYC, who have been tapped to share their stories of how they first fell in love with K-Pop and how it inspired them to be the artists that they are today, through a series of cover singles of songs by the sunbaes who first fueled their love for the genre. It also serves as an invitation to K-Pop fans around the world to join in the movement in celebrating a shared passion for the genre, and the artists who started it all.

ENHYPEN SPOTIFY

Up first is ENHYPEN, who just dropped their cover of BTS’ I Need U, a pivotal track in the group’s discography and one ENHYPEN is very familiar with. ENHYPEN’s song choice was a conscious move that delivers the same message of where they want their careers to move forward in the future.

THE ENHYPEN TOUCH

Behind every tribute is a story, and this one starts on a chilly January day in South Korea as we had the opportunity to watch first-hand the making of Spotify K-Pop ON! Single with ENHYPEN. In the middle of Gimpo, the warehouse where the filming was located was decked with set design, almost museum-like with different props set up. At the farthest end of the warehouse, ENHYPEN could be heard rehearsing and working hard to give justice to BTS’ song.

They come out after hours of filming, still wearing a smile on their faces as they see us waiting at the back. One by one, the members bow their heads as a greeting before taking their well-earned break.

ENHYPEN SPOTIFY

One would think that they were normal boys just taking a lunch break, which in retrospect, we had to be reminded that they truly were just young and normal boys with a dream. With their humble demeanor, it’s easy to forget that these are the same boys who would make unforgettable memories at the New Clark City Stadium only a few weeks later.

Get the lowdown on how this cover came to be, their love for BTS, and more in our interview with the group below.

Oh, and a special giveaway is coming your way, PH ENGENEs! We are giving away five ENHYPEN polaroids. Yes, you read that right. Want to know how you can take home this piece of polaroid love? Read on below for the mechanics.

So, this Spotify Single is a dedication to your first K-pop crush. Can you share with us why BTS is your first K-pop crush?

JAKE: I feel like it’s similar for most of the members, but for me, BTS…they were the first ones to really show me K-pop, you know? By listening to their songs, looking at their videos, I was able to see and learn about K-pop. So I feel like that’s really…they’re a very special group to me, so I feel like my goal is to also be in that position one day and be able to spread K-pop. Although it’s already very spread out all over the world, to really spread out the true colors of K-pop all over the world. I wish I could be that person one day.

Can some of the members share the first time they listened or watched a BTS song or performance?

JUNGWON: My first memory of BTS goes back to the ‘DOPE’ music video. In Korea, there’s a TV channel that plays music videos in the morning, and one day, before heading to school, I came across this music video. The members were dressed in various outfits, from doctors to policemen, and that one-take shot in the video really stuck with me.

SUNGHOON: For me, I heard ‘FIRE’ for the first time at the ice rink. SUGA starts off the song by saying “It’s burning up here,” and that part left a lasting impact on me.

Some of the members have covered “I NEED U” before, and now you’ve covered it with Spotify. How is the experience different from then to now?

JUNGWON: So when I heard that we were gonna do this rendition, it brought back a lot of memories, as you can imagine, so I watched my audition tape for I-LAND and I realized that my voice has changed a lot as well, and I have grown as an artist as well, so it was a lot of fun, and this was the first time for all of us to perform ‘I NEED U’ together, so it was really special.

Tell us about your Spotify Single, which covers I Need U by BTS.

JUNGWON: This was the first time producer Bang Sihyuk approved this creative rendition and also participated in the process as well. So it was a great honor for us to have him on board. This is definitely different from our regular songs, so please look forward to it.

So tell us [about] your rendition of ‘I Need U’, like what elements of the original song did you keep and how have you injected your own flavor into the song?

HEESEUNG: We all have different voices and we have different ways of expressing ourselves, but what we tried to maintain was the feeling of the original song and also the lyrics as well, so obviously this is our new interpretation—we’ve got our own groove and in terms of the sound, we brought in our own color, but again, the feeling remains the same.

How do you think ENGENEs will feel while listening to your rendition?

SUNOO: We’ve tried out some fresh approaches in our rendition of ‘I Need U’ so that ENGENEs can witness a new side of us. Although it’s a cover, we attempted to incorporate our unique touch, and I hope ENGENEs enjoy it.

ENHYPEN SPOTIFY

Do you have any fun TMIs to share about the making of this Spotify Single? How did you decide on the line distribution, did any members want to sing specific lines?

JAKE: Well, what we usually do when we record a song is, we would go in one by one and sing the whole song, and the producer would sort of choose what lines would fit each member. And I was like second last, but when I got in to record to sing the whole thing, the producer told me that the second verse, the sing and rap verse, is gonna be Ni-Ki, so I didn’t even get to sing that part. But I think we just sing the whole song and see who sings it the best and we just distribute the lines.

You had an opportunity to perform your rendition of a song by BTS. How do you feel about this opportunity?

JAY: Actually, this song ‘I Need U’ was the start for me to dream of the things I’m doing right now, becoming a K-pop artist and meeting our fans, performing on the stage, everything—just started [with] this one song, for me. So I’m really excited and grateful, honored to have this kind of amazing opportunity and I really want to thank our fans who made this for us.

Tell us about the partnership with Spotify.

JAKE: So we have a very good relationship with Spotify for a long time. We all use Spotify a lot, so I think it’s a very special collaboration and we’re very happy to be able to have this opportunity to collab with Spotify and also do this very special version of I Need U cover. Hope you guys will listen to it on Spotify.

Can each member recommend ENGENEs a K-pop song that you may have been gatekeeping? It can be like B-side tracks or older K-pop songs.

NI-KI: J-hope’s ‘MORE’.

HEESEUNG: ‘Reflection’ by RM

JAKE: So many good options, but I would have to choose ‘Magic Shop’ by BTS.

SUNGHOON: BTS’ ‘Go Go’.

JUNGWON: ‘Dimple’ by BTS.

SUNOO: BTS’ ‘DNA’.

JAY: For me, I recommend ‘We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2’.

You guys say that you want to be like BTS, but now, I’m sure many trainees and fans see you as their K-Pop Crush too. With that said, what song of yours would you like trainees and future fans to cover?

JUNGWON: ‘Future Perfect (Pass the MIC)’. Because it’s really physically demanding to perform this song, so I want our juniors to sort of experience that hardship.

It’s a challenge!

HEESEUNG: [Nods] It’s a challenge.

JAY: Exactly.

ENHYPEN SPOTIFY

What is the next goal that ENHYPEN wants to achieve?

JAKE: For me, maybe do like a stadium tour in the US. Yeah, that’s one of my goals.

SUNGHOON: I don’t wanna get caught up on this tree in front of me, I wanna see the entire picture–the entire mountain, which is why we have a lot of ambitions. We have a long way to go, so we wanna grow as a team.

How would you like ENHYPEN to be perceived and remembered by your fans?

HEESEUNG: I feel like the memories of my idols are intertwined with my childhood recollections. Certain songs have the power to transport me back to particular moments from the past. Similarly, my goal is to become an artist whose music can take ENGENEs back to their own pasts and make them happy whenever they listen to our songs in the future. This entire journey means that we’re growing old together, and that’s how I hope ENHYPEN will be remembered.

Special thanks to Spotify, ARDENT, BELIFT LAB, and HYBE

But she’s not just conquering the local scene; she’s about to conquer the world with her appearance on the second series of RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK vs. the World.

Now, if you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes as Marina Summers gets ready to serve some slayage, she spills the tea on her meticulous routine, giving us a sneak peek into the glitz and not-so-glamorous transformation of the persona we all adore. From the initial strokes of makeup magic to the final touch of fashion, Marina Summers sashays through her drag routine in an interview with NYLON Manila.

Getting ready for drag involves a meticulous routine. Could you walk us through the makeup process?

Shower—simply take a shower. Make sure that your face and body are clean because when you feel good outside of drag, you will feel good inside of it. Then, remember to prep your skin; always make sure to moisturize and prime. If you stay in drag for seven hours and film videos, your makeup needs a solid foundation—literally a strong base to begin with so that it doesn’t cake or become oily.

Marina Summers has a distinctive and captivating look. Can you share the creative process behind developing your signature style and overall aesthetic?

It was a constant change. Take it as an evolution, but at the moment, I think I’ve hit the sweet spot for Marina’s signature style: all-neutrals, snatched, and very Filipina ang atake. You know, it’s natural but it’s drag—like you can tell it’s drag, because it’s not natural in a way that I’m a one-eyeshadow kind of girl.

When it comes to the fashion side, three words describe it: glam, feminine, and sultry. So for me, Marina’s signature look, in terms of her aesthetic, is that she loves femininity and a lot of skin as well.

What are some of your must-have beauty products or go-to items in your makeup kit when preparing for a drag performance?

Number one—I love MAC powders, from pressed powders to their compacts; I think they’re very, very good for drag. Number two is gloss, which I don’t have on right now, but always gloss, gloss, gloss. Number three is not makeup, but I always wear perfume. Remember, you have to smell the part, and not only look the part.

At this point, kahit fingertips linalagyan ko, especially when I’m performing kasi kailangan maamoy nila—the scent elevates the experience. Now, I won’t tell you what my perfume is. Many people are asking, but it’s a secret.

Drag makeup is transformative. How do you navigate the balance between creating a bold, glamorous persona and staying true to your identity as Marina Summers?

For other people, their persona out of drag is very strong, very powerful, but when they get in drag, they become cutesy-cutesy. Then, for some, they may be shy in person, but in drag, they turn into dominatrix figures, sex sirens. But for me, that’s not the case—Marina is simply an extension of who I am as a person.

I think the only difference between me and my persona simply lies in the fact that she’s more famous and wearing layers of foundation.

Beauty and fashion go hand in hand in the drag world. How do you integrate your beauty choices with your fashion selections to create a cohesive and show-stopping look?

Marina is always beautiful. With that, it’s not always a problem to mix and match my looks. Like I said, when I do drag, it’s all about glamour and femininity, sexy and sultry, so it’s not that hard to plan wigs with outfits. It’s simply a matter of ‘do these choices make sense?’

For example, when I see structured hair, do I go for a structured look or a more flowy one? Then, when I think of strong, straight hair, what look would complement it? It will depend on the hair or the look, and the rest will follow.

Do you have any pre-show rituals or routines that help you get into the mindset of Marina Summers before hitting the stage?

Now, this is always part of the initial process—eat. When it takes me two to three hours to get ready, it’s in time for my digestive system to ~werk~ before a performance.

Makeup is not just about appearance; it’s also a source of confidence. How does the process of getting into drag impact your stage presence?

When I do my makeup, ang tahimik ko. Every stroke matters; every change in the look changes something in me. So when I do my makeup, I have to be centered. Walang kumakausap sa akin, alam nila ‘yan. Kasi the process of transforming doesn’t simply happen after attaching the wig. The moment you sit there, the moment you pick up a brush, the moment you pick up the glue, that’s where the performance starts.

Beauty is an ever-evolving industry. How do you stay current with the latest beauty trends, and do you incorporate them into your drag looks?

Always stay, scroll online, and save posts. Then, for inspiration, constantly change your mood boards. Lahat online now, every makeup look, every fashion show is there, so the trends are there that’s why I thing social media is very, very important talaga.

Drag has a powerful way of conveying messages. Are there specific themes or messages you aim to express through your makeup and overall appearance as Marina Summers?

Ang ganda-ganda ng mga Pilipina—well, not everyone, just kidding. Ang sarap maging Pilipina. So I always make it a point to embody the essence of being a Filipina. I want to look like a Filipina muse—a Filipina in drag. That’s where the pride comes in, and that’s the message I want to convey through the looks, through the outfits.

Kaya ko rin laging sinasabi na ‘she’s the Filipina Diva.’ Laging may Filipina because Marina Summers is a Filipina.

When you competed on UK vs the World, what was it like translating your style and aesthetic to a more global platform?

There wasn’t a big shift in making sure that my drag and Filipino drag are palatable to the international audience because it already is. What you saw on Drag Race Philippines is Filipino drag, and I wouldn’t change anything about it. Without giving away too much, all I can say is being Filipina is my biggest asset.

The drag community is known for its camaraderie. How do you connect with other drag artists, share beauty tips, and collaborate within the community?

Again, stay online. Create content, and watch videos of drag queens that I look up to, locally and internationally. Or when we travel, we meet queens from abroad, and makikita mo talaga in-person, and you’ll know more about their techniques and routines. While I’m always saying to stay chronically online, it’s important to live outside of social media. Explore and experience the drag world in person, you know?

Since I also produce my own shows, I get to work with a lot of drag queens with different personas, different aesthetics, and different perspectives on beauty. Ang ganda na magkakaiba kami, kasi lumalawak yung knowledge, yung kaalaman ko about the drag community.

While the focus is often on the glamour, what challenges or surprises do you encounter during your beauty routine that people might not be aware of?

When you have a bad skin day, there are times na hindi kumakapit yung foundation, to the point na kahit anong gawin mo, maghihiwalay siya. Even though you’re well-rested, kapag tinamaan ka ng malas, talagang there’s no way na maayos mo siya. Speaking of rest, one more thing is when you’ve pulled an all-nighter, and then you have to wear contacts—that’s the hardest part of it all.

Lastly, when you’re running out of time. Drag takes time, and it’s not as glamorous when you’re still in the process. There’s tucking, shaving your legs, shaving your armpits, grabe—drag is high maintenance. Sabi nga nila, ‘mahirap maging maganda’.

For people aspiring to explore drag, what advice do you have for developing their own beauty routine and finding their personal style within the drag world?

Stop when you can because there is no turning back once you’re in drag. But when you’re already a foot in, constantly practice. Now, find what works for you and take pictures.

When you want to be a performer, take videos of yourself performing, watch them afterward, look at yourself—your silhouette, your makeup—and find what’s wrong. Kahit mukha nang tanga na pinapanood mo paulit-ulit ‘yung sarili mo, be your own best critic.

SnoRene Takes Center Stage In Darren Espanto's 'Iyo' MV

Glimpse SnoRene From A Different Timeline In Darren Espanto’s ‘Iyo’ MV

line
And the SnoRene fans cheered.

Maris Racal and Anthony Jennings star in Darren Espanto’s new music video for ‘Iyo,’ and it’s giving us all the SnoRene endgame feels.

Can’t Buy Me Love (2023-present) cast members Darren Espanto (Stephen Tanhueco), Maris Racal (Irene Tiu), and Anthony Jennings (Snoop Alfonso Manansala) came together for a beautiful and romantic musical slay in Darren’s music video for his single Iyo just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Iyo is part of the Can’t Buy Me Love series soundtrack, and Darren as Stephen performed the Chinese version of the single on the show. On February 14th, the singer-songwriter dropped a music video for the single starring a breakout couple from the series—Maris and Anthony. Maris and Anthony as Snoop and Irene together make up the ship “SnoRene.” They’ve gained plenty of attention and praise for their hilarious dynamic, chemistry, and their storyline development.

While their characters and their relationship in the music video totally deviate from what we know SnoRene to be, people can’t help but describe the Iyo music video as an alternate timeline or dimension (or even the future) SnoRene. Maris even captions her Instagram post about the MV with “snoop and irene in another dimension.” It’s a heartwarming reprieve from the constant push-and-pull between the two on show, and it totally gives us hope for the future of SnoRene and the future of this onscreen pairing.

THE SNORENE RELATIONSHIP

The usual Snoop and Irene dynamic is chock-full of humor, banter, and clashing upbringings and personalities. They’re not even a couple in Can’t Buy Me Love (yet…?), but Maris’ and Anthony’s chemistry is undeniable. From always getting into unfortunate situations together to sharing a drunken night together (where nothing happened…?), the couple’s journey together throughout the show has been a highlight for audiences watching. They play off each other really well, throwing lines like it’s nobody’s business, and develops a charming relationship that’s difficult to look away from. They even shared a rare sweet moment in a recent episode together!

After they tried to figure out what happened during their night together, desperate since Irene might just be pregnant, they managed to lower their guards and got to talking. Irene admitted that she would have a difficult time taking care of a child. Snoop assured her that if she really was pregnant, he’d take responsibility. Irene brushed off the moment, but it was sweet nonetheless.

The Iyo music video turns the two actors on their head, giving them a whole different look and direction. But Maris and Anthony drew from their much-talked-about chemistry and gave everyone a light, warm, and beautiful Valentine’s treat.

A LOVE SO SWEET AND LIGHT

Sun-drenched and romantic, the music video showed the two dancing on a hill, sharing romantic moments together that make us feel like we’re intruding. It was lighthearted in a different way than some of SnoRene’s banter—they were happy and carefree and clearly unafraid to love. It was reminiscent of wedding edit videos, where a couple’s journey is chronicled in an emotional compilation of their sweetest moments together. And they do “get married” at the end of the MV.

Soundtracked by Darren’s emotional, powerful voice singing lines like “Kahit na ano pang daanang bagyo / Pangako ko’y ‘di ka iiwan, ‘di lalayo,” seeing the characters of Maris and Anthony smiling at each other and generally having a great time is a real treat to SnoRene fans—and fans of romance in general. It was just so sweet. While their usual dynamic on the show is thoroughly enjoyable, portraying them in such a different light is fantasy wish-fulfillment any shipper would be overjoyed to have. And the two prove once again that they can handle more than just the characters of Snoop and Irene, leading us to once again ask the question—Maris and Anthony rom-com when?

7 Reasons Why Ten Lee Is Superstar Material

TEN Is Made For Superstardom—Here Are A Few Reasons Why

line
We love an all-rounder.

WayV member and solo idol TEN has proven time and time again that he’s made to be a superstar.

Related: Moments From WayV’s First Fanmeet In Manila We’re Taking To Heart

TEN, also known as Ten Lee, is a breakout star in his own right. A member of K-pop group NCT and it’s sub-unit WayV, as well as supergroup SuperM, TEN has boldly showcased his talents in singing, dancing, performing, as well in making creative and stylistic decisions.

The idol recently dropped his self-titled debut solo album TEN, after an all-out promo schedule that was filled with edgy, modern, and dynamic visuals that showed his distinct style. With the lead single Nightwalker, TEN radiates creepy in the coolest way possible, through an electronic track featuring plenty of falsetto and a dark, hair-raising music video—a stark contrast to the romantic, lighthearted and upbeat Lie With You.

Much of the reactions to and discourse surrounding TEN’s solo endeavors involve people picking up on him being soloist-worthy—a high compliment for idols whose careers often revolve around the groups they’re in. Plenty of idol group members have successfully ventured into going solo (while still being active in their groups), but it sometimes takes a special kind of idol to make it huge as a soloist while still bringing something new to the stage. Check out his new album TEN and we’ll leave it up to you, but here are a few reasons why we think TEN is made for superstardom.

HE’S A TRUE CREATIVE

TEN has always been creative, an artist in terms of actual visual art, fashion, style, concepts, music and every aspect of his work. He goes all out, from his hair to his outfits to the creative visual direction of his work—a true visionary. He’s unafraid to take risks and add a new level of creativity to what could just be simple concepts.

CONCEPTS ON POINT

From Paint Me Naked to Birthday and now to his self-titled album, the concepts shown through his work have always been visually striking and meaningful. He’s committed to telling a cohesive story through his music and visual concepts, and all the concept photos, videos, and promos for his new album were no exception, showing off an edgier, eerier side of him that was an alluring companion to his music.

DANCE MACHINE

Primarily known also for his dancing skills, as well as being a main dancer in NCT and WayV, the Thai artist is regarded as one of the best dancers in the current lineup of K-pop idols. His center or solo dance moments often go viral, and he’s choreographed as well, sometimes with choreographer Bada Lee herself. With TEN’s smooth moves, versatile dancing style, and captivating stage presence, he’s a dancing superstar in his own right.

A SEASONED IDOL

With over ten years of idol experience under his belt, TEN is no doubt a seasoned idol. At the age of 15, he competed in and eventually won a Thai talent competition Teen Superstar. All that experience, from competition shows to training as a rookie under SM Entertainment, he brought into the creation of his solo album, and it totally paid off.

VOCAL KING

Of course, a superstar has to be an all-rounder, and if you want to make it as a singer, you better be a great one. TEN has an impressive vocal range, and has been shown to be capable of handling different genres, from a louder, punk-rock song like Paint Me Naked to slower, emotional ballads like his cover of Baekhyun’s My Love on Masked Singer. Just recently, the idol competed in the South Korean singing show and showed off his pretty distinct pipes.

HE CAN COMMAND A STAGE

Being able to shine on a stage on your own, without being overwhelmed, is a testament to an idol’s skill and prowess, as well as their confidence. Just from his facial expressions and movements alone, TEN shows his ability to make sure he’s the only thing you’re looking at on that stage.

HE’S ALREADY MENTORING NEXT GEN IDOLS

It must be a career peak for idols to be a mentor on shows where aspirants are trying to be like them. TEN has been a mentor on a couple of idol survival shows, like Great Dance Crew in 2022 and more recently Thai survival show Chuang Asia. He was able to provide insightful feedback and advice to the young contestants while also being able to showcase his own capabilities, exhibiting honed skill and and a desire to help others down the path of success. Inspiring icon!
