In A Double Dose Of Cuteness, Natalia Guerrero Remakes Niana’s First Video On YouTube

line
People of the internet, feel old yet?

Yes, you are seeing double. Filmed nine years apart, Niana and Natalia Guerrero prove in the Gwiyomi video that not only does being cute run in the family, but so does talent. And trust that there is lots of it.

The year is 2013 and the culturally shifting gallop that is Gangnam Style has just been unseated as the supreme viral sensation. In its stead, the less aggressive, but equally addicting import from South Korea has charmed its way into the consciousness of the ever-so accommodating internet. “Gwi-gwi-gwi-yomi.” Does that ring a bell? If so, you may have either heard of the song, motioned the gestures in a characteristically cute way, or even both. Tracing its origins from Jung Ilhoon of BtoB, who the world wide web credits as responsible for the display of cuteness, as seen on MTV Diary and Weekly Idol, to the adorably arithmetic exposition it inspired, the Gwiyomi Song by Hari Baguette was by all accounts hypnotic and transcendent.

As far as internet trends go, everyone was in on it, naturally. Taking a life of its own, there were K-pop idols such as Miss A, Girls Generation Infinite, and SISTAR who were game to count their way into the hearts and double taps of many, as well as of Jung Ilhoon himself who showed his appreciation for the love by uploading his own version. A search on YouTube will reveal many parodies stacking up to millions of views each, but even before scrolling down, one of the top hits is that of a young Niana Guerrero who uploaded her own take on the Gwiyomi Song as her first foray into what will eventually become her stomping grounds for success.

For anyone who has long endured on the digital plane, this is enough to make you feel old. But wait for it, because in a realization of parallel lives, the youngest of the insanely talented brood, Natalia, did a remake of the Gwiyomi Baby Niana video…nine years later.  (Bone crack.)

Fair warning: The cuteness level is through the roof then and now.

The Gwiyomi Remake

Just like Niana Guerrero’s take on the Gwiyomi Song, which was simple, straightforward, and shot in one take, the version of Natalia was brimming with delightful appeal. Much like a wash of sunshine, the remake was warm and full of smiles, both from Niana and Natalia, as well as of anyone who watches. (Try denying it and we won’t believe you.) Obvious difference in light and video quality aside, everything was an almost exact reproduction of the original.

From the composition in the room, the micro-printed yellow button-down, the mid-parted hair nonchalantly cascading down the back, the missing tooth, and the dog minding its business in the background, one could easily mistake one for the other. Heck, if this were a comic book adaptation in film or television, the theory of the multiverse will be easily proven in the interpretation of the lyrics that directly translate to “1 + 1 = Cutie, 2 + 2 = Cutie.” And really, we don’t even have to expound on the confidence of movements because we all know that if there is anything the Guerrero siblings are good at, it is that they can dance to the beat and then some. (Bonus: Check out the version of Niana Guerrero with Ranz Kyle.)

On the shared Instagram Reels, the Gwiyomi remake of Niana and Natalia Guerrero has so far reached 4,282,596 plays and 736,429 likes. And just like it did nine years ago, it continues to charm at every shy smile and shoulder roll. Already showing a great deal of promise, charisma, and slick dance moves, Natalia Guerrero is clearly set to ascend into the supremacy Niana has carved out on social media.

Count On It

To be honest, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Gwiyomi scratches the surface of social media-focused pop culture barometer because of Natalia Guerrero as inspired her sister Niana, of course. The power they hold, yes, but also, whether one likes to admit it or not, the song holds up and digs itself deep into your brain even after all these years.

So, for all intents and purposes, let the cute counting begin again: gwi-gwi-gwiyomi.

Braving For Her Purpose: Rhoda Campos-Aldanese Is Raring And Ready To Dominate As COO Of MEGA Global Licensing Inc.

line
Five wise women once said: “Girl power!”

Following the news of Suki Salvador as president of MEGA Global Licensing Inc., the subsidiary shakes things up once more with another power move, appointing Rhoda Campos-Aldanese as COO.

It’s been a big week so far for MEGA Global Licensing Inc. (MGLI), the subsidiary of AGC Power Holdings Corp. tasked to not only acquire international franchise and appropriate it to the lens of the Philippines, but also to champion the Filipino voice and talent on the global stage. On the heels of announcing Suki Salvador as the new President committed to steering the endeavor onwards and upwards, we meet the Chief Operating Officer (COO) who is raring and ready to shape MGLI to the dominant industry player it was born to be. With a stellar 20-year career to her name so far, Rhoda Campos-Aldanese is poised and primed to take the task ahead of her and run with it.

But more than just the know-how and experience, Rhoda Campos-Aldanese is equipped with the gift of foresight, a necessary component in the diverse and dynamic world of marketing in business. From the glowing acquisitions of her life’s calling, she has made a name for herself in the industry for trailblazing the growth, expansion, and elevation of some of the biggest brands in the retail. Ticking the boxes of triumph in managing menswear brands and developing private fashion and activewear for teens, operating in beauty, jewelry, and fashion, and most notably, working with such covetable brands as Chanel, Dior, Clarins, Estée Lauder, La Prairie, Lancôme, Montblanc, Piaget, Vacheron Constantin, Lanvin, and Christian Louboutin, and even co-founding a local cosmetics brand that is conscious and highly attuned to the needs of the Filipinos above everything, she really knows what it takes to not only survive, but thrive in a competitive market.

Not only is she focused on the acquisition of brands, but more importantly, there is a premium for storytelling that Rhoda Campos-Aldanese highlights and honors, which makes it truly special on every given opportunity and necessary for the soaring promise of MEGA Global Licensing Inc.

Braving Her Purpose

There is also a sense of discovery to her vocation, which she intends to bring to the table for MEGA Global Licensing Inc. and its brands such as NYLON Manila and VOGUE Philippines. As COO, her primary goal is to take media landscape to the next level by ensuring the value of international media titles to the Philippine context. “There is a need for a radical approach towards excellence in editorial to make sure they are tuned into the sensibilities and needs to provide the right and relevant information to their readers,” states Rhoda Campos-Aldanese of her approach to MEGA Global Licensing Inc., one that will debunk the perception of exclusivity and elitism by putting the reader first. “The currency now includes that of love, compassion, and helping the less fortunate.”

This isn’t just for mere lip service, because apart from the aforementioned beauty brand committed to diversity and inclusivity, she has also extended her passion to uplifting local talents and entrepreneurs, especially at a time when she co-founded an e-commerce platform for beauty and wellness that was anchored on products sourced from local materials and markets in an effort to champion Philippine agriculture. And now with MEGA Global Licensing Inc., Rhoda Campos-Aldanese intends to bigger, bolder, and braver with her purpose. To echo this big move, Chairman and CEO of MGLI, Archie Carrasco, asserts, “I have no doubt she is the right chief that will expand MGLI’s business portfolio to reignite the Philippine media.”

Make It Happen

In all her years in the business, Rhoda Campos-Aldanese has seen it all. But even with all that neatly tucked under her belt, she is still looking forward to learn more as COO MEGA Global Licensing Inc., especially through the initial lens of NYLON Manila and VOGUE Philippines. And with a penchant for guidance, she has this to offer to anyone with a dream and fiber of hard work to make things happen. “It’s all been anchored on your passion and your why. If you have both, you will stay committed. You will find that physical strength and stamina to bring together the necessary resources so your dream grows into what it needs to become,” she shares to the new generation. And with MGLI, she continues, “we will develop the necessary skills that will help us carry out our unique purpose.”

Energized by what is yet to come, the vision and mission commences. Now, it is time to make it happen.

Rising Vietnamese Artist thuy Might Just Be Your Next R&B Obsession

line
From medicine to the main stage.

Like most Asian kids, thuy followed her parents wishes of becoming a doctor. But now, she’s making waves in the R&B scene with her moving vocals.

Those what ifs in life are arguably the biggest mysteries you’ll ever counter on your journey. Those moments at the crossroads have the potential to change your life, leading to nerve-wracking decisions. It can also compel you to wonder what would happen if you took the other path. As they say, you miss every shot you don’t take. Vietnamese-American R&B musician thuy also went through those life-changing crossroads. Growing up, thuy (pronounced twee), loved music, but also wanted to follow the dream of her parents for her to become a doctor. In fact, for a time, she even worked in optometry.

But one fateful day, she decided to go with her boyfriend to a recording studio and her dreams of becoming a full-time musician were born. Thuy probably isn’t regretting her decision considering how her career is at its highest yet and she’s regarded by some to be one of the next R&B stars to watch out for. NYLON Manila got the chance to chat with the musician as she opened up about her life, her music, and what she has to say to young Asian kids.

LIFE WITH MUSIC

Growing up, music was always part of thuy’s life. “I’ve always known that I wanted to become a musician! I don’t even remember when exactly I started singing, but around eight years old, I knew I could do it. I just didn’t know how I was going to accomplish it yet.” Even when it comes to her Vietnamese family, music has been a constant in their lives. “We have always had a love for music and singing. Karaoke is a part of my parents’ life and entertainment and I always found myself singing at family parties. I think that this part of my culture influenced me early on and birthed my love for performing.”

As a 90s kid, the Bay Area raised singer looked to pop queens like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera as inspirations. But she also had no one who looked like her growing up to look up to. Aside from that, she also had expectations from her parents to meet. A self-described bubbly girl, thuy was shy at school and that type of kid who kept her head down in the books to get the good grades. Basically, she was like the stereotypical Asian kid.

And furthering that stereotype, thuy’s parents saw her entering the field of medicine. “When I was a little girl, my parents used to ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I would quickly answer “doctor” and my parents would sing their praises. Throughout my life, I knew I wanted to touch lives and medicine was a field I knew I could help people and make a difference.”

ASIAN KID, ASIAN PARENTS’ DREAMS

After she graduated college, she took on various jobs in the medical field, from dental, dermatology, and then optometry. Though she didn’t hate working in medicine per se, it also wasn’t what she envisioned for herself. “I really enjoyed the medical field, but I knew I wasn’t fulfilling my true passion which was music.” While she was working in the medical field, thuy also juggled her then fledgling music career. After she would clock out of work, she would head to the studio. “At the time, I felt like I was putting half my effort into both. I just knew that if I put 100% of myself into music, it would eventually work out,” she shares.

But things drastically changed for thuy when she accompanied her boyfriend to a recording studio that helped breathe new life into her musical ambitions. She decided to quit her job, pack her bags, and move to Los Angeles full-time to pursue her career. “The year I quit my optometry job to move to LA was also the year that I decided to take my music career seriously and consistently release music. Putting in my two weeks was scary, but in hindsight, it was the best decision I ever made.”

R&B MAIVEN

If talent was what people were looking for in thuy, she clearly had it. In 2015, she dropped her single called Hands On Me that made waves in the local R&B scene. The track even won thuy a competition at a local radio station. thuy is known for her soulful R&B with a smooth voice that can lull you into a euphoric state. Her striking voice, modern meets nostalgic R&B sounds, dreamlike soundscapes, and killer sense of style have helped become a rising favorite among many fans, which includes Khloe Kardashian.

“I like to make music with a lot of ear worm melodies. I want to make people feel good when they listen to my music. My music is authentic, fun, and healing,” shares thuy with regards to her musical style. Though while she often releases music in the realm of R&B, thuy considers her style varied. She likes to mix and match here and there because, as she puts it, she hates being in a box. “I feel like it has definitely been a journey. My musical style is constantly evolving and I just love music so much that I don’t want to ever box myself in. I don’t think I’ll ever settle on any music style.”

A BREAKTHROUGH IN 2021

thuy has been releasing music for a few years now. But she arguably reached her highest career peak yet in 2021 with the release of successful singles like in my head, in my bag, and universe. The year also saw thuy drop her debut EP, i hope u see this, a nine-track EP that follows the stages of a toxic relationship, from breakup to finding yourself again. The EP was met with positive reviews and has since went on to rack up tens of millions of streams and counting. “It was such an accomplishment for me,” expresses thuy. “I feel so proud to be able to curate a world for people to dive into even if it is only for 25 minutes. It’s my first baby and I really poured my heart and soul into it. It was a great feeling to close out a chapter and start something new.”

The album bore from thuy’s experiences during the start of the pandemic. With everything being put on hold, she felt that her career was going nowhere. She knew she had to do something. “I knew I had to continue to stay productive, so I reached out to a producer, Beatzzbytazz, based in China. He sent me a beat pack that really inspired me and after that I realized that we were in the baby stages of the making of my first EP.”

thuy is currently hard at work on the deluxe edition of the EP set to drop later this year. Already, she released a new song from the album called inhibitions featuring P-Lo as the first single off the re-release. thuy expressed that fans have quite a lot to look forward to with the new release. “I’m so excited for people to hear the deluxe because I have some amazing features on there! The crowd favorite songs will have a feature on it and of course a couple new songs will be added!”

VIETNAMESE GIRL IN THE MUSIC SCENE

thuy has stated in the past that she had no one to look up to who looked like her growing up. So, now that she is firmly establishing herself in the R&B scene, she can proudly claim to be one of the handful but growing number of Asians not just in R&B, but music in general. What excites her the most is that those within the R&B community and her own have accepted her, including her parents. “I feel so grateful to be embraced by the R&B community and especially my own! I’m honored to be that form of representation for so many people who look like me. I’m one of the few in the music industry so I hope that my journey inspires others to also pursue their dreams.”

This is actually what she feels helps her stand out from the crowd. Aside from her talents, she’s not like the others. From her name to her background, she has something to say. “I think that my experiences make me unique. I have a story to tell and that makes me stand out on its own. All of my songs stem from real life experiences and I think this is why my supporters gravitate towards me. I only speak from the heart and I always lead with love.”

TAKE THE RISK

So, what’s next for thuy? Aside from the deluxe EP and new music, she’s also going on her first sold-out tour with the hopes of expanding it abroad. “I have such a love for performing and touching fans all around the world. When I’m on stage and in the presence of their energy, there is no better feeling! I also hope to continue growing into a better musician and a better me, mentally and physically!”

When it comes to her new and would-be fans, she hopes that her music becomes a source of comfort for them. “I want them to feel heard and seen! I want them to feel like they have someone who understands them! And I also want them to feel good. Music is such a healing thing and if I can help in that way, I’m already fulfilling my purpose.” For those looking to get into thuy, she suggests to first listen to in my bag or u got me as they “present two different sides of my artistry.”

And as for the young Asians out there hoping to follow their dreams, thuy says the most important step you can do is taking the risk. Don’t just make it a what if moment. “Take the risk! It always pays off. Bet on yourself and drown out any self-doubt. Sometimes you have to fake it even with yourself but before you know it, you’ll be exactly who you want to be. No one’s opinion of you matters more than your own desire to fulfill your true passion.”

BIANCA BUSTAMANTE Racer

From Karts To Formula Cars, 17-Year-Old Bianca Bustamante Is Racing Her Way To The Top

line
History maker at just 17 years old.

As the first Filipina to compete in the W Series, Bianca Bustamante is helping pave the way for women and Filipinos to succeed in the sport of high speed car racing.

Related: What It’s Like Competing In Obstacle Course Racing, According To This 23-Year-Old Athlete

Out of all the sports that a young kid could try, race car driving, or kart driving to be exact, isn’t top of the list for many. And when it comes to competing in the sport, the country isn’t known to be a hotbed for racers in the global scene. Aside from the fact that it’s not the easiest sport to get into, it’s also not the most accessible to many Filipinos. But as proven in the past couple of years, Filipinos can and do succeed in sports that aren’t as well known or popular as say basketball or boxing. However, recently in professional race car driving, the Philippines has a young athlete to root for. And it comes in an unlikely form, a 17-year-old girl by the name of Bianca Bustamante.

In case you aren’t familiar with her, Bianca is a driving prodigy who has been killing it in the sport since she was six years old. As a young woman, she has done well in the sport that is often perceived to be only for men. Bianca is such a talented driver that this year, she made history as the first ever Filipino to compete in the W Series, considered as the pinnacle of professional car racing for women. All this and more has led her to become a successful outlier who is helping pave the way not just for Filipinos in the sport, but for women as well.

GETTING INTO THE SPORT WITH THE HELP OF HER DAD

Like with any A-tier athlete, Bianca was enveloped in the world of racing motorsport since she was a young girl. She credits her dad, a karter himself, for introducing her to the sport. “I remember as young girl, he would bring me to the racetrack, and I would watch him race and I got a taste of it. And ever since then I was so addicted to it. When I was three years old, that was the first ever time he bought me a baby kart. And that’s when I started driving. Then I just couldn’t stop doing it,” she tells NYLON Manila in a one-on-one interview. By the time she was six years old, which is the minimum legal age to compete in racing, she began her career and hasn’t looked back.

Speaking of Bianca’s father, it’s little surprise to know that their bond remains strong. “We sort of have this connection that I don’t have with anyone else. He understands my situation as a racing driver, and he understands how I feel.” But despite their similar backgrounds in racing and the competitive nature they inhabit, he still treats her like his daughter. “He still prioritizes me as his daughter and not as a racer. So, that’s definitely something I love about him. He would always tell me that on track, you’re a racer, but off track, you’re my daughter, and I love you regardless of your wins or whenever you lose, or if you don’t perform well.”

LOVE OF THE SPORT

For any driver who likes going from 0 to 60 in 3.5, they know that the thrill of it all can feel like the best part. When Bianca is behind the wheel, it’s the adrenaline above all that excites her about racing. “The feeling of driving and going so fast, it’s something different. For me, whenever I go fast, I feel so free. It’s like you’ve got your adrenaline so high. And there’s sort of that life or death factor that just moves everything up. Because when you’re driving, there is a lot of risk of crashing or injuries. But for me, when I have that helmet on, I just I feel so fearless. You know, I don’t fear to crashing, I don’t fear even death.”

Depending on who you ask, driving can be a tense experience or a breeze. When Bianca hits the racing track, she is a seasoned pro. But behind that professional attitude is a lot of training to prepare for the gauntlet of competitive racing. As she shares, it’s not a walk in the park. “Racing is very physical. A lot of people say that it’s so easy driving, and that it’s only turning the wheel or pressing the gas, but it’s not. Compared to the normal cars you drive in the street; the Formula car has no power steering. So, we drive it as how heavy it is. And we have to withstand a lot of g force going so fast, which is like around 260 kilometer per hour. So, going that fast and turning, it will take a lot of back strength.”

Her training then consists of a lot of back and neck exercises, as well as building up muscle. But aside from that, she also trains mentally because racing is also a mind game. “You need to be really quick on your feet and quick in your head and your hands and hand and eye coordination. It’s all of those things that are very crucial when it comes to racing.”

MAKING HISTORY IN THE W SERIES

Over the past decade, Bianca Bustamante has collected herself a trophy case worth of championship wins and accolades both locally and abroad. Even though she is just 17 years old, she’s had a career that can compete with some of the older pros. But despite her first place wins and history making feats, Bianca admits that she feels like an underdog at times, mainly due to the fact that she is quite young compared to her competitors.

“Being one of the youngest drivers in racing, I always see that I have so much more to learn, and so much more progress. At first, it can get really tough because I don’t have that sort of experience to back me up and boost my confidence. But on the other hand, I feel grateful because the only way I can go up from here is up. So, I see everything as a big learning opportunity for me.”

Clearly, Bianca has been taking her notes. Earlier this year, Bianca arguably reached her biggest feat of her career so far when she was included in the 2022 W Series. Aside from the prestige of being able to compete in series, she also holds the title of being the first Filipino racer to compete in the competition. As one of the youngest drivers of the new series, Bianca is currently based in Indianapolis, Indiana as she prepares for the start of the 2022 series on May 6 in Miami.

“I was definitely over the moon. I felt like I was in a different planet. Being in a global series has always been a goal of mine. It’s one of my biggest goals. But it was all hard work. I worked really hard just to get that seat. We went over and beyond. And I give so much effort, so much time and so much focus on it. That’s why I got the seat, I was willing to do anything for my dream,” she enthusiastically shares.

DEALING WITH THE PRESSURE

With the achievement also comes the pressure, not just to perform well, but to represent for the country as a whole. This is something Bianca is acutely aware of. “There’s definitely a lot of pressure that comes with racing. I think that’s one of the first things that I had to learn at the age of six was just how to deal with the pressure and how to deal with all of that sort of the people watching you. Being the first ever Filipino woman to make it to W Series definitely comes with a lot of pressure as it comes with a lot of joy.”

But representing the Philippines in her races is not something new for Bianca, which is why more than pressure, she’s happy to figuratively wave the country’s flag. “To have all of the Filipino people there with me supporting me backing me up will be such a boost for me. I try not to let the pressure gets me and I’ll do my best to learn and hopefully make everyone proud.”

Now that Bianca is racing in the big leagues, it brings with it a whole new shift of pressures and priorities. Notably for Bianca, she didn’t climb up the ranks like most rookie racers would and instead made a big leap from karting to Formula cars. “I made such a huge leap that even I surprise myself. Sometimes I wonder if I’m strong enough for this, or if I’m good enough. But yeah, it’s a big change to big difference. Now, it’s like, my whole life is at stake. And you know, if I don’t make it now, then I’ll never make it. So, this is sort of my make it or break it moment.”

Pressure is something that Bianca has dealt with ever since she was six. Whether it be to meet her parents’ expectations to do well or else lose her seat, pressure from the competition, or how others may perceive her, it’s always been there for her. She opens up that even over a decade in the scene, things can still get draining. “It’s still an amazing journey, even though there’s a lot of downsides of it. It’s not going to be always rainbows and butterflies. There were moments that I felt like, I wanted to quit. But now I’m almost gonna make it. I’m making it in my dream. So, I guess it’s all worth it.”

SUCCEDING AS A WOMAN IN RACE CAR DRIVING

Cars, driving, racing, and car culture in general are things people usually associate with men. While there are female car enthusiasts and Pinay race car drivers, Michele Bumgarner comes into mind, society has usually depicted car culture as male dominated. The stereotype usually goes that women play with makeup and clothes while men talk about cars. To this day, there are still people who assume that when they come across a slow car, it’s a woman behind the vehicle. As a young female professional race car driver, Bianca is very much used to the sexist way of thinking. Despite the fact that she can race laps around her male counterparts, there are those who still look down upon her just because she is a woman.

“I’ve been told pretty much my whole life that I wasn’t meant for this sport because of my gender. And now I still get those comments a lot. In people’s eyes, they think that men are still more competitive than women, and thus, the reason why there’s no women in F1. And so today, people still think lowly of us because we’re trying to make it in a male dominated sport.”

But Bianca isn’t letting those criticisms get to her. What’s important to her is that she continues to win as she hustles and grinds towards her dreams. “I’m working hard to reach my dreams and I don’t see it as an impossibility. And other might say that I’m dreaming way too high, that if I dream lower, maybe I would make it. But I’m still gonna continue doing it no matter what negative thing they say to me. Because I owe it to myself to continue on believing on my dream.”

And she slyly adds, “I guess as a girl, I just feel so empowered whenever I drive. And I love the feeling of it. And aside from that, there’s also the competition, driving against boys, beating them passing them. It feels so great.”

OTHER GOALS IN LIFE

When she’s not burning rubber at hundreds of kilometers per hour, Bianca is still a 17-year-old girl. And just like with most girls her age, Bianca is a student as she’s currently in year 11 at UST. She’s taking up the STEM strand and hopes to become and engineer or architect when she grows up. She enjoys drawing and believe it or not, she’s actually been drafting and reading floor plans ever since I was 12. To that end, she hopes to get into UST for college. But considering that she’s currently in the US, she says she might attend university there instead, probably at UC Berkely in California.

As Bianca continues to achieve her dreams and make a name her herself in competitive racing, she hopes that her success will open the doors for the sport to be more widely played in the country. “I want to continue paving the way in Philippine motorsport and women in motorsport. I want to bring the flag in top pinnacle of motorsport. The Philippines isn’t known for having a lot of racing drivers. So, I want to sort of make an exception and show that racing is something that we can also excel aside from basketball, volleyball, or football. I want to empower women and hopefully inspire the next female Formula driver from the Philippines in case I don’t make it.”

THE FUTURE OF PHILIPPINE RACING

While competing in the 2022 W Series is a dream come true, she has her eyes set on the top goal of being part of Formula One and hopefully make history as one of the first females to compete in the global competition. “I’ve worked my whole life for it. And now I’m closer to it than I’ve ever been. So, I don’t see anything as an impossibility.” With drive, ambition, and talent behind her, Bianca Bustamante is no doubt a rising star in motorsport racing. Not only has she been winning at such a young age, but she’s also proving that Filipinos can do well in many other sports.

“It definitely brings me a lot of joy when people call me a rising star. I want to continue excelling in this. I want to continue doing it for the rest of my life. And I want to build, a community here in the Philippines that is focused on racing.”

As for those looking to get into the sport, Bianca suggests you visit the different local tracks around the country that can accommodate karting like the Clark International Speedway and Carmona Racing Circuit. Try out the sport and if you like it, you could compete in races and even get a license. There’s also the Petron Motorsports Karting Academy which trains young racers to be the next champions in the sport and hopefully become the next F1 driver.

At the end of the day, she just wants people to know that race car driving is an amazing sport. “It gives you so much thrill. even just watching it to be honest, whenever you watch F1 Rally, it gives you an adrenaline just being a watcher and supporter. I do hope that I get to inspire more people and inspire young woman or anyone to hopefully get interested in motorsport and try out. I want to share my story and hopefully help other people find their passion and go for their dreams and go for their goals no matter how unachievable it may seem to others.”

Return Of The Greats: 2022 Is Shaping Up To Be The Year Of The K-Pop Comeback

line
Very much here for this 2nd and 3rd gen rebirth.

2NE1 had a reunion. BIGBANG made their comeback. iKON has a new album out as well. And we are all but ready to welcome them back.

In the K-pop world, there are few things as exciting as the countdown to a new comeback. That anticipation of your fave group or act making their return can be a thrilling experience. New music, new looks, new photocards, and new hair colors. But it feels even better when a group that hasn’t been active for a while finally makes their return to the spotlight. And this 2022, quite a few iconic and legendary K-pop groups are taking center stage once more.

While some of these acts may not have been as active in years past, that’s about to change this year. Something must be in the air for all this groups to be active once more. Across the 2nd and 3rd gen of K-pop, 2022 may just be the year of the long-awaited comeback and we’re ready for it. From legendary reunions to much-anticipated comebacks and rumored returns, here are the K-pop acts ready to reclaim their spot as the reign supremes.

BLACKPINK IS BORN PINK, PERIOD!

BLACKPINK often likes to say in their songs “BLACKPINK In Your Area.” But our question is, where is that exactly? Because it’s clearly not at the recording studio or dance practice room. While the past year saw Rose and Lisa release their solo works and Jisoo begin her lead actress era, we haven’t gotten a full BLACKPINK comeback since 2020. Ever since they dropped THE ALBUM, there has been little to no sign of a comeback. But the drought has finally come to an end.

YG Entertainment set social media on fire with the drop of their comeback trailer that was filled with juicy tidbits. Firstly, the group is set to drop two music videos, both of which are YG’s most expensive mv’s to date. The first, entitled Pink Venom, will drop this August 19 as their pre-release single. The second will drop in September 16 along with their second album drops. Speaking of their album, we also have confirmation that it will be called BORN PINK. Finally, their next world tour, which has been described as the biggest ever for a K-pop girl group, will begin this October with a stop in Manila on March 25, 2023. And this is just the announced plans, who knows what other surprises BP has in store for their grand comeback.

IKON IS COMING

This is not a drill. iKON is actually having a new comeback! The last time iKON released an album was all the way back in February 2020 and a new song in March 2021. But finally, after anxiety inducing patience and anticipation, more iKON music is on the way. They dropped their first teaser in April 11 and then revealed that they will be dropping their 4th EP, FLASHBACK, on May 3. We’re very much ready for new iKON music, our playlists are parched.

WINNER FULL GROUP COMEBACK IS REAL

Keeping it in the YG family, it seems that the gates of the dungeon have been unlocked thanks to a surge of their artists making a comeback. First was TREASURE, then BIGBANG, followed by iKON, and now we have WINNER. After nearly two years, YG Entertainment announced that the group will be making a comeback this July 5. And the comeback will feature all four members, their first since Jiwoo and Hoony were discharged from the military. The news follows their April 30 and May 1 concerts in Seoul which marked their first full group concert in two years.

BTS’ NEW ALBUM IS ON THE WAY

BTS has been very much active over the past couple of years. Single drops, record-breaking concerts, and award show performances have kept the supergroup top of mind for many. But we’re sorely missing the chance to listen to a new BTS album and enjoy a full body of work. Their last album, BE, was released all the way back in November 2020. But there is light at the end of the tunnel as BTS revealed that a their highly-anticipated new album is coming soon.

Their upcoming album will be called Proof and it won’t be just any regular release. It will be an anthology album that “embodies the history of BTS.” The LP will consist of three CDs that spans the group’s discography by featuring a variety of tracks that “reflect the thoughts and ideas of the members on the past, present, and future of BTS.”. There will also be three new songs on the album. Pre-orders are open now.

BIGBANG IS BACK BABY

Few groups have helped spread the reach of K-pop around the world as much as BIGBANG has. The boy group was undoubtedly one of the leaders of the 2nd gen of K-pop. They helped lay the groundwork for the genre to be the force that it is now. And aside from that, their music was straight fire. But it’s been awhile since they released any new music, four years to be exact. But that streak ended when BIGBANG dropped their highly anticipated new song Still Life in early April.

Taking a more stripped back approach, the track has the members take a more introspective look at themselves as they use the metaphor of time to share how things and they themselves have changed over the years. Whether or not it is the beginning of the end of BIGBANG or a start of a new chapter is up to them. But we’re just happy that they’re back and potentially got the closer we needed.

2NE1 AND THAT LEGENDARY COACHELLA REUNION

2NE1’s disbandment in 2016 was, is, and will continue to be seen as one of the biggest injustices in modern K-pop. It was an unceremonious move to a girl group that helped pave the way for their successors. But despite all these years, many still have love for the group and many more have been clamoring for a reunion. Considering that all the members are now out of YGE and are pursuing their own solo careers, many Blackjacks hoped that they would finally come together as a group again.

And many wishes were granted when CL brought out the rest of the members for a surprise performance of I Am The Best during her Coachella set. The surprise reunion shook the K-pop world and reminded everyone that 2NE1 is still that girl group. Now, the only thing we need now is for SNSD to have that comeback and our 2nd gen rebirth dreams will be complete.

LET’S BRING IT BACK TO 1:40

Speaking of SNSD, the K-pop gods and those above (AKA SM Entertainment) must have heard our wishes as the legendary girl group is actually making their long awaited comeback this 2022. SM Ent revealed that Girls’ Generation will drop a new album in August, which actually marks their 15th anniversary since their debut in 2007. To make it even better, the album will be called Forever 1 will drop on August 8. The 8th month on the 8th day with all eight members part with eight also symbolizing infinity, it just feels so correct. Keep in mind that their last release, Holiday Night, was all the way back in August 2017. So, this will be their first comeback in five years and one that will hold a strong meaning as the group celebrates their 15th anniversary. 2nd gen is truly alive and well this 2022 and we’re here for it.

GOT7 IS OUR NAME

When every member of GOT7 left JYPE in January 2021, it opened a new chapter for the group. Every member has gone on to have successful solo careers that span the worlds of music and acting. And this is on top of the fact that GOT7 still remains, and is technically still active. But after the release of Encore on February 2021, it has been relatively radio silent from the group in terms of new music. But that changed this 2022.

Hints dropped by the members, most notably BamBam, have suggested that the group will have a comeback as a whole later this year. And if reports are to be believed, that comeback is coming sooner rather than later, specifically this May. To add fuel to the fire, GOT7 recently launched a brand new logo and caption, as well as new TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram account. The group was also recently included to Warner Music Korea’s artists lineup. At this point, Ahgases are just waiting for that comeback date.

EXO COMEBACK SOON

EXO "OBSESSION" [Scan] #exoobsession EXO OBSESSION [Scan] | Exo news, Exo, Bts and exo

Enlisting for military service and solo activities have meant that EXO hasn’t promoted much as a group for a while. But 2022 looks to be a special year for many EXO-Ls. 2022 marks the 10 year anniversary of EXO and Suho has said that the group is preparing for a group comeback. And as more members returning from their military service, Chen is the latest as of this writing, we’re one step closer to seeing OT 9 again. Despite all that has happened, the nine-member boy group is still a dominant force in the K-pop scene and we can’t wait for new music from them. In the meantime, you can check out the content they recently filmed for SM C&C Studio.

HYOLYN IS GETTING THE FLOWERS SHE DESERVES

When it comes the 2nd gen K-pop girl groups, the conversation isn’t complete without including SISTAR. The girl group was a strong presence in the scene during the early to mid 2010s with hits like Touch My Body and SHAKE IT. But ever since their disbandment in 2017, the group has faded into the background somewhat. This is why it was much welcome news when Hyolyn was set to compete in Queendom season two. After all, they don’t call Hyolyn the Beyoncé of Korea for nothing.

In case you didn’t know, Hyolyn is an A-tier performer and singer who can keep up with the best of them. With Queendom season two currently on going, many new and younger K-pop fans are seeing and appreciating the excellence that Hyolyn serves regularly. And there’s also the fact that SISTAR had a reunion recently that was all forms of correct.

With a wealth of experience and a distinct point-of-view to his name, Suki Salvador continues the relentless pursuit of passion and purpose with his appointment as the new president of MEGA Global Licensing Inc.

It is very easy to get lost in the pursuit of passion. However, even with all its dazzling details and compelling stories, success doesn’t come easy, that much we all know and have been through the wringer of. With the wealth of experience to his name, Suki Salvador understands this predicament very well. In the work that he deals with on the daily, one that interfaces with the intersection of creativity and commerce, comprehension and consideration is necessary, which he has been accorded with over the years from his longstanding tenure as creative director of MEGA and his storied ascension as president of One Mega Group. Today, the story of his purpose continues as he assumes the role of president for Mega Global Licensing Inc.

While vision and a sharp business acumen is imperative, one other ingredient is essential to make things extraordinary—curiosity. “I would observe the way people spoke, the way people behaved, and the way they reacted to certain situations. This led me to the conclusion that we are all very different, but it also taught me that we are all equally important. I understood the importance of including everyone despite our varied differences,” he shares, shedding more light into the compass that has steered the decisions he has made in his career. It is this sense of wonder, which parlayed a special interest into a thriving career, that makes Suki Salvador a perfect fit for the big moves Mega Global Licensing is set to take with the publishing of two dynamic international brands: NYLON Manila and VOGUE Philippines.

“There is an element of discovery that is inherent to NYLON Manila and VOGUE Philippines,” explains Suki Salvador. And it is very same insight and innovation that he intends to guide him in this new journey.

Hello World

For the uninitiated, Mega Global Licensing Inc. (trading as MGLI) is a subsidiary of AGC Power Holdings Corp. is an expansion of the legacy of One Mega Group, which of course has been ushered into the modern age by CEO and Chairman, Archie Carrasco. Navigating through the digital age, as well as of the pandemic, AGC Power Holdings Corp. sought to diversify its lens and encourage people to foster the love for reading by acquiring international franchises meant to champion the Filipino voice and talent on the global stage.

Through its impactful storytelling that is focused on creativity, captivating visuals, and engagement in modern technology, MGLI as operated by AGC Power Holdings Corp. is committed to address the shift through digital content consumption. With its foundation of over 30 years experience in print and digital publishing, the full-service publisher of NYLON Manila and soon, the latest addition to the biggest and most influential media brand in the world, VOGUE Philippines is already eyeing bigger moves with sights set on continuously expanding its portfolio to further strengthen presence in the publishing industry.

“NYLON Manila and VOGUE Philippines are just two of the many international brands we are bringing into the local market,” says Archie Carrasco of the enduring endeavor. “Suki brings his 15 years of experience in publishing from One Mega Group (OMG) to ensure the success of the operations of all the media brands under MEGA Global Licensing.”

Onwards And Upwards

With Suki Salvador at the helm of Mega Global Licensing Inc. the goal is to platform the best of what the Philippines has to offer. “Through excellent media platforms, we will be able to discover new talents and products which I hope our audience will purchase and consume. It is my goal for our audience to buy from the Philippines,” he says of his audience-first plans. “MGLI through VOGUE Philippines and NYLON Manila will release daily content that is purposeful, intentional, and beautiful, but more importantly, it will be about content that you actually like. Our content will not be nebulous nor will it be difficult to comprehend. It will be accessible with ease. As a leader, I’ve made it my mission to include everyone and to remove the velvet ropes that separate people. I want to accord everyone an opportunity to be the first in line.”

Cumulatively, one of the pillars that holds up Mega Global Licensing Inc. through the leadership of Suki Salvador is a continuous vocation to discover and hone local talent by introducing Filipinos to a wider audience locally, and of course, the international stage. For NYLON Manila, which is the go-to source for big, bold, brave, and pop culture-obsessed, there is a lot to look forward to such as fanzines, printed annuals, and engagements such as music festivals, parties, and talks. Meanwhile, VOGUE Philippines is set to re-imagine Filipino fashion with its thrust to uplift the country’s rich culture, diversity, and creative talent.

“This moment is an opportune time to open and re-open businesses and to put the Filipino craft side by side with the rest of the world,” asserts Suki Salvador through his appointment as president of Mega Global Licensing Inc. While expectations are usually met with caution, there is a lot to look forward to. And just as it has pledged to work towards, all that there is left to do is to keep reading, because from here on out, it’s onwards and upwards.

climate change scientist protest

FYI, We Only Have 3-8 Years To Lessen Climate Change

"Listen to the goddam qualified scientists" - Ariana Grande (2021).

Scientists are literally chaining and gluing themselves to buildings to warn that time is running out to address climate change.

In Don’t Look Up, one of the most talked about films of 2021, the movie followed two scientists as they desperately warn the world that a planet-destroying comet was headed towards Earth. The flick became a topic of discussion for many because of how it darkly parodies the real-life issues of climate change, fake news, apathy, and selfish ambitions that swirls to form a response that’s severely lacking. While some may scoff at the over-the-top nature of the movie, the themes and scenarios it touches upon are very much real. Just look at the global response to climate change.

Despite the very real warnings, signs, and research about how climate change is destroying the planet, we are only seeing baby steps without real action to fix these problems. This clip from Good Morning Britain is real and feels like a deleted scene from Don’t Look Up. And just like how an imminent threat is facing the world in the movie, a new and dire report from the UN raises the alarm for the fact that we only have a few years left for things to get better to prevent irreversible damage to the world.

SCIENTISTS PROTEST

Just recently, a new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change revealed the fact that not only are things are not going well, but that we only have little time left to fix things. If the report somehow missed your feed, then you may have come across the scientist protest that occurred last week. Over 1000 scientists from 25 countries from Scientist Rebellion took part in non-violent acts of civil disobedience to raise awareness for the fact that the clock is fast running out.

The most talked about demonstration you may have seen was that of Dr. Peter Kalmus, a NASA climate scientist with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He and his fellow scientists chained themselves to the JP Morgan Chase building and warned of global inaction on climate change. He was then met with over 100 police officers in riot gear who arrested him and the other scientists. Other demonstrations included scientists in Washington, D.C. chaining themselves to the White House fence. Spanish scientists throwing fake blood over the facade of the National Congress. German protesters gluing themselves to a bridge while British scientists glued posters and their hands to a building.

“We need to both understand the consequences of our inaction, as well as limit fossil fuel emissions as much and as quickly as possible. As scientists, we tend to be risk-averse. We don’t want to risk our jobs, our reputations, and our time. But it is no longer sufficient to do our research and expect others to read our publications and understand the severity and urgency of the climate crisis,” said the group in a statement.

3-8 YEARS LEFT ON THE CLOCK

#LetTheEarthBreathe quickly trended online as many social media users raised awareness for how serious the situation is and we’re running out of time. The report, which you can read in full here, states that the world needs to make “rapid and deep cuts” to greenhouse gas emissions within the next few years to avoid the destructive effects of climate change (that we are already seeing). Specifically, the report calls for global greenhouse gas emissions to peak before 2025 in order to stay at or below the targeted 1.5 degrees Celsius yearly increase in temperature.

Emissions must then be reduced significantly by 2030 to avoid a future where greenhouse gas emissions lead to a median global warming of about 3.2 degrees Celsius by 2100. “This report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is a litany of broken climate promises. It is a file of shame, cataloging the empty pledges that put us firmly on track towards an unlivable world. We are on a fast-track to climate disaster,” said Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres said in a press conference.

REAL-WORLD CONSEQUENCES

In case you aren’t counting, that leaves us with around two and a half to eight years to make significant changes to emissions. As in, we, and more importantly governments and large corporations, have less than a decade to get it act together. While 2100 may seem far from now, you don’t have to look far to see how climate change is already negatively affecting many people. A few weeks ago, Typhoon Agaton hit parts of the country, with it’s ensuing destruction caused hundreds of millions of pesos in damages and, more tragically, led to the lose of at least 167 lives.

Photo from AFP

What is greatly worrying about Agathon was that it hit the country in the middle of the summer season. In a time when the country should be experiencing hot weather, a strong typhoon hits the country and leaves more than a hundred dead isn’t normal. But due to climate change, that is slowly becoming a sad reality. And this is not to mention that the summer heat can get abnormally sizzling or it rains hard.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

At first glance, this is a lot to take in. But there are things you can do to help. Firstly, try to live an eco-friendlier and more sustainable lifestyle. Commute more, lessen your energy usage, delete emails, conserve water, shop wisely, and buy things that you really need. Recycle and reduce plastic usage. Cut off the strings of your mask before you dispose them. Use Ecosia as your search engine so that you can help plant more trees. But it is important to note that many of these suggestions come from a place of privilege. A family or individual living paycheck-to-paycheck may not have the time or resources to live a greener lifestyle. Buying an electric car is not top priority for many at the moment. The country’s notorious “sachet economy” is partially driven by the fact that many people can only afford plastic sachets for themselves or their families.

Ecosia - the search engine that plants trees

Also, as nice as it is to live a greener lifestyle, individual action can only take you so far. The fact that more than a majority of the world’s CO2 emissions come from large corporations and first world countries should tell you as much. It’s not even half the picture to blame people for not having a sustainable lifestyle when in the first place not many can achieve that. And what’s worse is that third world countries like the Philippines end up suffering harder than major polluters. Studies have shown that the country is one of the most at risk countries when it comes to climate change. Already, over the past couple of years, a number of unusually strong typhoons have battered the country yet we don’t contribute as much emissions as compared to our richer neighbors.

USE YOUR POWER TO BRING REAL CHANGE

Yes, reduce your plastics use, save water, and shop sustainably. But more needs to be done for real and lasting change to be done. So, what can you do? First and foremost, educate yourself and others on the issues. Second, raise awareness about the reality that is facing the country and the world. If you really want to have a greener lifestyle, then we need sustainable water resources, proper waste management and sanitation, and proper public transportation that doesn’t push people to buy cars.

@tonirmorales DI MAGIGING TEACHER TODAY #science #globalwarming #climatechange #education #foryou #fyp ♬ How`s Your Day – aAp Vision

All these are responsibilities of the government and other structures of power. This is why it is also important to use your voice and vote to usher in politicians who truly care about a better environment. If you really care about climate change, then when you vote this May, you vote for people who have real and correct solutions to the many environmental concerns this country is facing.

@ohmyveeeeeee NEW CHISSMISS MGA MARSS!!! #lettheearthbreathe #scientistprotest #savetheeart #stopfossilfuels #savetheworld ♬ Payphone – Maroon 5

A lot of this can be daunting and even leaves you with a sense of dread, but there is hope. We need to accept our reality and take action because our future depends on the next steps we make. Things can still be done. There is even a part of the climate report called “Summary for Policymakers” that specifically lays out what people in power should do to avoid a global catastrophe. What you can do is to make sure these people actually listen so that you and the future generations can enjoy a livable world. As we celebrate Earth Day 2022 this upcoming Friday, take the time to really understand how you can help make the world a better place.

5 Times ALAMAT Flexed Filipino Prints With Their Outfits

line
They aren't called ALAMAT for nothing.

Now this is how you do it for the culture.

Deeply rooted in culture that sung about ghosting in seven Filipino languages, constantly tackling the haunting past of our country in their music videos, and also connecting to their audience through the meaning behind each outfit that they wear, mostly in our textiles and prints, P-Pop group ALAMAT is really out here making points. Just when you thought you’ve seen it all, its members, Taneo (from Ilocos), R-Ji (Waray Waray), Alas (Davao), Mo (Zamboanga), Tomas (Bicol), Jao (Pampanga) are here to educate both their fans, the Magiliw, and casuals about our culture all while showing us how to take pride those textiles in a contemporary way that none of us ever saw coming.

1. THEIR PPOP CON OUTFIT WAS MADE OF METALLIC INABEL WEAVES

Probably one of their most memorable outfits, ALAMAT made it clear that they’re doing it for the culture. In an Instagram post by Hapi Habi, the Filipino brand revealed that the suits designed by Jhay Layson were made of metallic inabel weaves while their accessories were woven from Maguindanao, a weaving technique known as Inaul. That’s not even the best part. The back design of ALAMAT’s suits also had hand-painted scenes of everyday Filipino life by artist Niño Gallardo Malatag.

2. TOMAS’ DENIM VEST WITH CORDILLERA WEAVES

For their ABKD music video, ALAMAT took Filipino streetwear to the next level. Just look at Tomas’ deconstructed vest with Cordillera woven textiles and patches paired with a black hoodie. We also learned that the Baybayin characters in each of the boys’ outfits is the first syllable of their last names.

3. ALAMAT’S HARANA OUTFITS WERE INSPIRED BY THE 19TH CENTURY BARONG TAGALOG

Singing their version of OPM song Porque by Maldita, the boys of ALAMAT did not disappoint. They showed us yet another way to wear the Barong. According to Hapi Habi, “the outfits are inspired by illustrations of Filipinos wearing the Barong in the 19th century. These modernized Barongs are accented with weaves from Abra.” The pastel color scheme they chose were apt for the vibes of the ballad and reminded us of our love for summer. It could also be remembered in the Spanish period, when a Harana took place, all the men in the group were often in matching Barong Tagalog.

4. FILIPINO TAKE ON GRUNGE

ALAMAT wore patches of woven Filipino textiles for their performance at the UP Fair 2021. The black, red, and white color story added to the grunge style that the boys were going for. Who would’ve thought our textiles would look even cooler?

5. THEIR BLACK AND WHITE OUTFITS FOR PORQUE WERE WOVEN BY THE YAKANS OF ZAMBOANGA

If you liked the pastel look in ALAMAT’s Porque music video, you’ll like their black and white outfits even more. (We’ve already got our eyes on Mo’s off-white button-down.) What’s special about this set is that the boys wear the Yakan Tennun textile that was created by the Yakans of Zamboanga and Basilan who often take inspiration from nature.

BONUS: BOMBER JACKETS THAT DEPICT THEIR CULTURE

One of ALAMAT’s goals is to educate fans and casuals about their hometown. They also explained the element on each of their bomber jackets in this giveaway. Take for example Tomas’ set who’s from Bicol that had the mythical creature Bakunawa, or Alas from Davao’s jacket that had the Philippine Eagle.
