Here’s How to Romanticize Your Life as a ~Broke~ College Kid

Living for the mundane moments.

When making the most out of your college years, you don’t have to break the bank.

When asked about college life, cheap cup noodles, late-night study sessions, and a tight budget often come to mind. But being a ~broke~ kid doesn’t mean you can’t romanticize your everyday experiences. Turning mundane moments into something cinematic—we’ve heard this time and time again, but what does it really mean?

In the hustle and bustle of coursework, deadlines, and midterms, we often overlook the moments we will miss the most once we’re out of college. Whether it’s taking photos of your coffee cup or going to that championship game, there are countless ways to make the most out of those years—all while maintaining your academics. Maybe you’re a hopeless romantic or simply breaking the monotony; here’s how to romanticize your life as a broke college kid.

Curate a Personalized Playlist

Create a personalized playlist with songs that resonate with your mood. Whether it’s for study sessions, relaxation, or dance parties in your room, the right tunes can change your daily routine. My personal pick? A 2016 movie playlist for my commute. Those OPM tracks make me feel like I’m in a music video.

Play Dress Up for the Day

When your school doesn’t have a dress code, it’s easy to fall into the habit of wearing sweatpants and flip-flops. If you’re feeling lazy, picture that 90s romcom movie montage when the main character chooses her OOTD. Now, putting in that extra effort to plan your outfit? If it means changing your mood for the better and boosting your confidence, then those minutes are totally worthwhile.

Take Pictures Even When It’s a Mundane Moment

You totally don’t need a snazzy camera to capture the good stuff. Your trusty smartphone’s got your back. Take photos of your classroom bestie, carinderia lunch, and that cozy corner in your dorm room. Someday, you’ll look back on these mundane moments and wish you were 20-something on campus again.

Take Yourself Out on a Date

When you’re single and struggling with your classes, self-love becomes your only ally against the world. While it sounds a little self-indulgent, it makes sense to date yourself and dive deep into self-discovery. After all, we often forget the carefree souls we once were before entering college.

It doesn’t have to be over-the-top, too. Head to a cute café or pop into a local museum. Who knows what kind of cinematic moments you might make without blowing your budget.

Have an At-Home Spa Day

Now that we’re all about self-love, add at-home spa day to the list. To transform your dorm room into a relaxing space, start by making sure it’s clean and clutter-free. Then, light some scented candles, head to your everything shower, and apply face masks while playing your personalized playlist. Preferably, schedule your DIY pamper day on a Sunday so that you’ll feel refreshed and ready to tackle another school week.

Mood Lights for an ~Aesthetic~ Atmosphere

I learned this one from my interior design BFF: lighting makes or breaks your living space. And since we’re not breaking the bank, those trending LED lights or ₱99 aura lamps will work just fine when creating a cozier atmosphere. Remember, classrooms are dull enough; don’t bring that energy back into your dorm room.

Write (or Doodle) Whatever You’re Feeling

Just like taking yourself out on a date, journaling encourages self-reflection. It allows you to dive deep into your thoughts, emotions, and experiences, helping you gain a unique understanding of yourself. Your journal is also a canvas for creativity. You can use it for drawing, sketching, or even pasting photographs and mementos. In essence, it helps you cherish the present, plan for the future, and reflect on the past, making it one of the perfect ways to romanticize your life and make the most of your college experience.

Slow Down Your Daily Routine

In the hustle and bustle of college life, it’s easy to rush through your daily routine. Take a step back and savor the small moments. For instance, when you’re walking to your 7 AM class, take a moment to people-watch on campus and appreciate the beauty of your surroundings. You don’t have to do this everyday, but slowing down can make your college experience feel more romantic and less stressful.

Work on a Creative Project

Whether you’re a communication major cramming for finals or studying in a science program, we often forget what it’s like to genuinely feel those creative juices. Creativity can serve as a stress-reliever. When you immerse yourself in a creative project, it provides an opportunity to escape the daily grind and unwind, reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Engaging in creative activities also encourages mindfulness, where you are fully present in the moment, focusing on the process rather than the outcome. And who knows? Pursuing creative endeavors can reignite your passion for life.

Take Half an Hour for an Activity That Brings You Joy

In the midst of lectures, midterm exams, and assignments, it’s essential to set aside time for yourself. Instead of scrolling through TikTok, dedicate 30 minutes a day to an activity you genuinely enjoy, whether it’s reading a book, playing an video game, or working out. This small ritual can help you relax and remind you of the small joys outside of academics.

If You Want to Start Saving, Here Are a Few Things That You Should Stop Buying

No you don't need it.

Since we’re just starting to build better saving habits, I won’t include your daily dose of caffeine on the list… for now.

Related: With 2023 Coming To A Close, Here Are Small Steps to Building Better Habits

In today’s fast-paced world, we easily fall into the trap of instant gratification. We’ve all been there – whether it’s spontaneous mall trips or a scroll through TikTok shops, we find ourselves swiping credit cards, paychecks, and allowances with alarming speed. At this point, we’re living the same story: we don’t even stop to think through our purchases, and we don’t consider the consequences. Before realizing the damage, our bank balance is ‘below minimum,’ and Kuya Delivery is already knocking on our front door.

Now, let’s make something clear. Buying ~ this and that ~ after a hellish week at school or a hectic stretch at work is well-deserved, but it’s time for a reality check. Unless you make six figures or live off generational wealth, we’re adults who can’t afford another purchase from a content creator’s yellow basket. If you’re all about crushing those #TravelGoals, creating that emergency fund, and adult things, it’s important to establish a healthier relationship with your finances. For starters, here are a few things that you should stop buying.

It’s the Same Shade!

As a beauty girlie, I’m most guilty about purchasing the same shades of makeup products. The worst part is I’m not the only one with this problem. Sure, we finally found the palette and scheme that works—which is great, BTW—and that’s why we keep gravitating towards the same reds, pinks, and browns. Then again, what we’re doing is cutting down those beauty buys.

Let’s consider the time it takes to finish that bottle of liquid blush. By then, what will you do with the extras? This unhealthy habit results in a cluttered vanity and a stash of unused products—aka wasted money and makeup.

New Clothes

As a teenager, ‘you don’t need new clothes‘ was a hard piece of advice I can’t seem to follow. Now that I find myself working in a professional setting, it’s even harder to stop spending on outfits, a trending top, and a pair of chunky shoes. With every purchase, I’m starting to feel like Rebecca Bloomwood from Confessions of a Shopaholic—without the consequences, yet.

Given that I take the phrase ‘passion for fashion‘ literally, here’s some advice: you don’t need to stop shopping for clothes. We know, it’s ironic for the story, but it works by setting proper rules. Only purchase new things with the money you’ll earn from selling pre-loved pieces. There’s Carousell, Facebook Marketplace, and Instagram. Imagine decluttering with a new dress coming your way. It’s a win-win.

Over-the-Top Costumes

As the calendar turns toward the spooky season and the twinkling lights of Christmas, it’s time to reconsider over-the-top costumes. In recent years, the trendiest and coolest costumes have become a staple of both Halloween and holiday parties, with people competing to outshine one another with the most Instagram-worthy OOTDs. These same outfits will make an appearance only once, then be tucked away in the closet forever. That said, it’s time to embrace a more minimalistic and mindful approach for these events, with DIY costumes, re-wearing last year’s not-so-scary look, and saving yourself from unnecessary spending while keeping things sustainable.

It’s Called ‘Cheap’ Jewelry for a Reason

‘Affordable’ jewelry and accessories lack the quality and longevity of their ‘more expensive’ counterparts, which means they’re prone to tarnishing, fading, and even breaking. While that ₱299 necklace might seem like a bargain, these budget-friendly baubles can quickly turn into expensive regrets.

Don’t stress; you don’t have to invest in real-real jewelry that could potentially pay off your future home, but consider higher-quality bracelets, necklaces, and earrings that come with a heftier price tag. It’s called an investment because they are your best bet in the long run. Now, before you start doing some girl math to calculate the cost-per-wear and reach for that too-good-to-be-true purchase, remember the old adage: ‘You get what you pay for.’

Tiny Trinkets and Novelty Items

Look around your home. How much stuff have you accumulated? Now, identify which ones are actually functional. From trinkets to little novelties, you may find that you’re surrounded by objects that do nothing more than clutter your living space.

I remember that Shrek butt because I thought ‘cute, add to cart.’ Now, it’s lurking somewhere in my bathroom, contributing nothing but a non-functional touch. Like, leaving your toothpaste out in the open for the sake of showcasing a grinning green ogre isn’t the most hygienic choice. The same goes for those trendy novelty items on social media—they may look funky, but they lack any practical purpose.

Nope, Not Another Phone Case

Coming in different designs, phone cases are basically accessories. I don’t know about you, but I’ve color-coordinated outfits with the cutest cases for a picture-perfect mirror selfie. Now, you’re probably wondering why it’s included on the list. Like, what’s the harm in purchasing a ₱100 phone protection that doubles as a statement piece?

With girl math, it doesn’t seem expensive, but phone cases are far from affordable IRL. One wrong money move, and that ₱100 turns into ₱1000. That said, imagine ten things you’ll probably throw out once you upgrade to the next phone plan.

Cute Socks

Just like phone cases—they’re cute, but you don’t need another pair of socks. After all, most people won’t look at your feet. Trust me, they won’t even notice whether your socks have detailed designs or holes.

Spontaneous Fast Food Deliveries

Food deliveries are justifiable when you’re tired, far from a joint, or can’t cook, but those spontaneous scrolls through Grab Food and Food Panda can lead to unnecessary purchases. That overpriced fast food with an additional shipping fee could be spent on something else entirely. If we’re doing the math, getting up, grabbing a pan, and cooking a homemade meal can make you ₱350 richer.

All The Moments You Missed From Rex Orange County’s First Concert in Manila

BRB, still in my feels.

After the canceled tour in 2020, Rex Orange County finally had his much-awaited concert in Manila. Feeling FOMO? Here’s what went down.

Whether or not you’re into Rex Orange County, chances are you’ve experienced LSS with fan-favorite tracks like The Shade, Best Friend, and the TikTok sensation Amazing. And ICYDK, the British multi-instrumentalist was was officially scheduled to perform in the Philippines back in 2020—then the pandemic hit. For three years, Filipino fans made several requests through social media for a Live in Asia Tour in the country. And those prayers were finally answered.

Along with the promised performances of Sunflower and Television / So Far So Good, the hype was real considering that his highly anticipated concert completely sold out as thousands packed the Smart Araneta Coliseum last Sunday. In case you’re feeling FOMO, here are all the moments you missed from Rex Orange County’s first concert in Manila.

From West Sydney, With Love

Fans were in for an extra special treat as a Filipino-Australian singer and songwriter from Western Sydney made a homecoming appearance as the opening act for Rex Orange County. As if we weren’t excited enough, the electric tracks of Grant Perez, which weave stories of love, lust, and coming of age, set the pitch-perfect tone for the main event. And when he performed Cherry Wine? The crowd went wild!

Rex Orange County Playing Fan-Favorite Tracks

While we already had an idea of Rex Orange County’s tracklist for the tour, we couldn’t help but fall in love again when he serenaded the crowd with Happiness and Loving is Easy. When we turn 81 and forget things, this feeling will always be one of those we’ll remember.

Filipino Fans Proving to ROC That We’re the Best Concert Crowd

We were lucky enough to give Rex Orange County some sunflowers, but a fan took it to the next level with a hand-drawn portrait. To top it all off, we illuminated the big dome with a sea of orange lights as we danced the night away to the last few songs. Well, ROC said it himself; he approves of what he heard about Manila having the best concert crowds.

It’s A Secret

I should’ve stayed at home… Nope, I’m more than happy to be singing along to Best Friend late at night. Now, Rex Orange County and a few fans have a secret (and are we becoming best friends?). Don’t worry, here’s what went down.

As the song starts playing, the 21-year-old wanted all phones down so we could all be in the moment together—like besties with a secret. Surprisingly, everyone agreed, and it was one of the most genuine concert moments I’ve ever encountered.

Surprise Song!

Rex Orange County had initially planned to conclude with It’s Not The Same Anymore, but the Filipino fans had one specific song in mind—Pluto Projector. Given that we’re the best crowd, even ROC couldn’t say no after fans passionately sang the entire song a cappella. Encore? It’s more like a core memory.

Nadine Lustre, Mimiyuuuh, James Reid, SB19, and more – we’re still not over the best-dressed celebs and content creators at BYS Fashion Week 2023.

While some may look to the streets of Milan and Paris for the latest in style, the Filipino fashion scene is making its mark with our own models, runways, and artists. For its second edition, BYS Fashion Week showcased the biggest names in local fashion on its runways—plural.

Last weekend, celebrities and content creators gathered in celebration of Filipino fashion inspired by the multitude of a makeup palette. From larger-that-life statement details to scrap fabrics, we’re seeing the creations of Antonina, Ha.muRafa Worldwide, Neric BeltranCheetah Rivera, and Chris Nick here and there. Now, let’s look back to the best-dressed guests of BYS Fashion Week 2023.

Nadine Lustre

RAFA WORLDWIDE takes center stage with the debut of Hyperballad during BYS Fashion Week. With larger-than-life creations characterized by scrap materials and structured silhouettes, the final showstopper was a cherry dress worn by Nadine Lustre. Look closely, the beads were carefully crafted with recycled paper.

Mimiyuuuh

Mimiyuuuh walked the BYS Fashion Week runway back-to-back with Filipino fashion houses, RAFA WORLDWIDE and ḢA.MÜ. True to her style, the content creator took over Instagram with the caption ‘LIVING MY BELLA HADID DREAM kimmmmyyyyyyyy!‘ While donning one of the boldest looks from both collections with a fierce face, we couldn’t help but agree that she’s cooking Bella Hadid realness.

Marina Summers

Embodying elegance, Marina Summers wore a Chris Nick ensemble for BYS Fashion Week. With an all-black dress adorned with bows, the fan-favorite drag queen is serving sweet and sultry.

Liza Soberano

Liza Soberano had a proud sister moment while watching EJ Nacion open the show for Cheetah Rivera Studio. Well, that isn’t the only BYS Fashion Week moment we’re getting from the actress. Wearing an all-black jumper with thigh-high boots and a silver handbag, she’s definitely living in her star girl era, red hair included.

SB19

While performing at a runway show is a moment in itself, SB19 takes center stage with their Neric Beltran bespoke pieces. Drawing inspiration from the classic concept of ‘something blue,’ the Kings of P-Pop stepped onto the aisle, donning Beltran’s unconventional creations. Each ensemble is perfectly tailored to reflect their distinct personal styles; now, we’re obsessing over those larger-than-life bows, flat florals, and blooming bouquets. It’s a weird way to propose—but, yes.

Mika Salamanca

While the ‘little black dress’ has had its time in the spotlight over the years, Mika Salamanca is now giving white dresses their well-deserved moment. The content creator made appearances throughout the fashion weekend, but the standout fan-favorite is her Day 4 LWD look. Accessorized with pearls and a matching bow in her hair, we’re witnessing a different and stunning side of her personal style.

James Reid

Closing the rain and regret-themed show of ANTONINA, James Reid rolled down the runway in mesh, leather, and a pierced face. The Careless co-founder could add this event highlight to his long list of accomplishments. At this point, is there anything he can’t do?

Zoie Garcia

Whenever we think of fashion content creators, Zoie Garcia would always be on the list—and she proved just why with all these looks for BYS Fashion Week. If we could choose faves between a futuristic look and a babydoll dress, we’re going for this Sean Betco bandana top and patch skirt.

Justin Bangsil

If Britney Spears’ all-denim moment and Elle Fanning’s giant gold chain had a baby, it would look like Justin Bangsil’s bold choice for BYS Fashion Week. Wearing Mikael Edwardo, the content creator donned a larger-than-life denim chain with a matching denim tie top. If I only had one word to describe this? Iconic.

Cess Tan

The rundown of best-dressed personalities would be incomplete without Cess Tan. The content creator started the fashion weekend strong with a Mark Tamayo dress and pearl-embellished hair by Mark Rosales. This moment alone redefines mermaid realness.

Here’s How This Gen Z Med Student And Content Creator Achieves Work-Life Balance

Go-getter!

Gentle reminder: You’re not your job.

Whether you’re a recent graduate experiencing the 9-5 grind for the first time or three years into a career that offers little room for growth, at some point, it will feel like all you do is work. For the most part, you’ll worry: parents pressuring you to get your life together, bills piling up on your kitchen counter, and the desire to travel, move out, and have a day off, but you can’t.

The 24 hours in a day look different for everyone, but most of us struggle with the same stark reality—we can’t control our professional lives as we want, need, and deserve, and as a result, we often feel trapped. And the sad truth is not everyone is in a position to realistically make changes that would improve their professional (and personal) lives.

But, it is important to know that you are not your job. It’s time to consider the boundaries between who you are and what you do for a living. And while we’re all about work-life balance, how do you figure out what works and how exactly does that look like? These are questions Jam Ponce, a Gen Z med student, Bene Meritus awardee, content creator, pageant queen, and travel junkie rolled into one, seemed to have figured out. We got to chance to chat with her as she opens up about how she manages to do it all. Here’s how she balances work with her personal life.

Jam Ponce

Introduce yourself.

I’m Jam Ponce, a recent graduate with a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Santo Tomas. Currently, I’m serving as an intern at the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital, where I rotate through different specialties to explore potential areas of specialization for my future career. An intern is essentially a medical graduate who has not yet obtained a license; it’s a prerequisite before taking the licensure exam and pursuing a residency, if desired. My responsibilities change every other month, depending on the specialty I am assigned to. For example, during my time in Pediatrics, I may be involved in tasks like delivering babies or conducting pediatric check-ups. PGH offers rotations in 12 different specialties, although this can vary from hospital to hospital.

Between medical school, pageantry, and content creation, how do you balance these responsibilities with your personal life?

Honestly, it’s been tough. I’ve had to make sacrifices along the way, giving up precious time I could have spent with loved ones, missing out on opportunities, sacrificing sleep, and even parting ways with people I once held dear. It all comes down to prioritizing what you believe is best for you in the present moment. Deciding which priorities to place first is the challenging part because in doing so, you often have to make sacrifices in other areas of your life. I learned this the hard way, and I’ve made some bad decisions along the journey, but I believe it’s all part of the learning process in life. Of course, none of this would have been possible without God’s blessings and guidance in my life, along with the unwavering support of my loved ones.

Jam Ponce

What’s your daily routine?

Believe it or not, I actually don’t have a fixed routine! I just go with the flow every day. However, with our fully packed hospital schedule, I’ve been following a strict routine. I’m practically living in the hospital now. I only go home to take a bath and nap before returning for my duty.

When you’re feeling lazy, how do you find motivation?

I start by praying, then I read the comments my followers leave on my posts. When I have time, I check my inbox and interact with my followers. Lastly, I talk to and seek advice from my family, friends, and partner.

What are your hobbies, interests, and passions outside of work and academics?

I’m a big travel junkie! I find traveling and exploring new places incredibly enjoyable. I also have a passion for food trips, adventures, beach life, and discovering new things; all of these bring me joy!

Jam Ponce

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

‘To always have faith in God no matter what and trust in His plan.’

What’s your message for anyone who’s still trying to figure themselves out?

My advice is to be patient and seek guidance from the people you trust. Pray for what is best for you. Don’t be afraid to take risks, but at the same time, be prepared for the consequences. If all else fails, treat it as a learning experience.

What are five healthy habits you think everyone should practice?

1. Service to the people in need.

2. Being prayerful.

3. Working hard THEN playing hard.

4. Self care!

5. Spending quality time with your loved ones.

Exuding a vintage vibe but with very modern elements, his artwork highlights mundane Filipino life and superficial imagery.

THEIRFIELDNOTES

“I make art to document everything I see and love.” Graphic designer Althea or theirfieldnotes take inspiration from “everyday things that we often overlook such as product packagings we see in sari-sari stores, trinkets, and signages.” Turning the mundane into visual representations of love and joy, they share their perspective of the world with people ready to appreciate it.

Chasing Stars: Dilaw Deals With Being Away from Home and Out of Comfort Zones in Pursuit of the Big Stage

Well said

You can grow in comfort.

Related: Nadine Lustre Gets Real About Connection, Creativity, And Stepping Out Of Her Comfort Zone

Now that we’re adulting, one of the steps some of us are taking is moving out of our family homes. While the idea of living on your own is thrilling, it becomes scary, lonely, and exhausting after a month, not to mention expensive. The comforts of home-cooked meals, familiar faces, and the feeling of security are now replaced with the uncertainty of a life in a new city. Before you even realize it, you’re living out of unpacked suitcases and in deafening silence. Well, what we’re feeling is the reality of OPM collective, Dilaw.

Coming down from Baguio City, this talented group of musicians has always shared a common dream—to make it big in the music industry. Thanks to Uhaw, Dilaw blossomed into a fully-fledged band. However, that meant leaving behind the comfort of their homes, families, and setting out on a career brimming with uncertainty. But with back-to-back releases and the launch of Orasa, we can all agree that they are stars in the making. We got a chance to chat with the OPM band as they share a message for everyone who’s moving away to chase dreams.

Where are you from, and where are you living now?

Leon: Born and raised in Baguio, currently living in Metro Manila.

What’s the cultural difference between a small town and the big city?

Leon: Well, everything moves at a faster pace here. There’s a tight schedule for everything and everyone; once you mess up, your whole day is f-ed up. Basically, back in Baguio, we had more control of our time. We had a laidback lifestyle, and we were never in a rush to get somewhere or do something. Sometimes it’s a crutch because you don’t want to be stuck resting your whole life, but if you’ve been living in a city that never sleeps—hustling and bustling 24/7—for the past six months, a little bit of rest would’ve been nice.”

What is something that you miss the most back home?

Wayne: Baguio. We miss home.

En: Shout out to my cat!

Wayne: My bed, my mom, my neighbors na chismosa.

Leon: Our chismosa friends.

Do you think everyone needs to move out of their comfort zone in pursuit of their dreams and careers?

Leon: I don’t think so. I feel like there are people who thrive outside of their comfort zone and try all of these things. While I always recommend breaking free from your comfort zone, there are other ways to do things that don’t require you to move to the big city. You know, how everyone says that you have to move out to Manila and away from the province to get these opportunities. Everyone has a different path, so if you want to chase that dream somewhere far from home and be busy all the time, go ahead. It can be fun, like what we’re feeling right now, but there’s nothing wrong with taking your time.

Wayne: Tama, tayo ay mag chill lang.

Leon: I mean, as long as you’re responsible enough to get whatever you need done, then there’s no rush. There’s no reason to force yourself into an uncomfortable situation just to grow. Like, you can grow in comfort.

What are your tips for anyone who’s planning to move out of their homes?

Leon: Keep in touch with the people you love. You’re not going to miss the house, you’re not going to miss the view back home, but you’re going to miss the people around you. If you can make close connections where you’re going, and whenever you get the chance to visit and reestablish lost connections—take them. And have fun, please. Just because you’re out of your comfort zone doesn’t mean you have to be miserable.

What’s your message to anyone who’s chasing their dream careers?

Leon: We’re all on the same boat. We’ll see you at the end, we’ll see you on the way, we’re all in this together.

All four judges—John Legend, returning champ Niall Horan, Gwen Stefani, and new judge Reba McIntyre—turned for the young artist and were rendered speechless by her performance.

Filipinos have gone far on the singing competition before. Just in the last couple of years, singer Jej Vinson was able to compete on The Voice twice, first as a solo artist on Season 16, where his Passionfruit performance garnered millions of views and praise and acclaim from the judges and the audience, and second as part of a trio called Sheer Element. The first time, he made it to the top 13, and the second time, Sheer Element made it to the Battle Rounds.

Kaylee looks to be a crowd favorite. Her dazzling vocals, presence, creativity, and control were lauded by the judges as they fought for her after her stellar performance. Here’s what you need to know about this talented young star.

SINGING IN THE BLOOD

“I grew up singing karaoke…Filipino family, so I’ve been singing for my whole life,” Kayla shares before she enthusiastically brings up her family with her on stage after her audition. The close-knit family is based in Ewa Beach in Oahu, Hawai’i, and they all love to sing (besides her father!). She chose Golden Slumbers in honor of her late great-grandfather, who was her biggest supporter.

The seventeen-year-old loves soulful R&B, so it made sense for her to choose to be on Team Legend. With the beginning of the Battle Rounds nearing, we’re seated to see how far she goes.

There’s a running joke on social media asking what’s in the Philippine waters given the abundance of singing talent among Filipinos. People often ask why are Filipinos so good at singing? Regardless if you fit the bill or not (I know I don’t), there’s an ever-increasing visibility of Filipino talent all over the world. The connections between cities, countries, and continents have never been more clear nor more deeply-rooted.

Both mainland and diaspora Filipino artists make their way to the global stage, whether as emerging musicians or through competitions like The Voice. Think Bruno Mars or Jessica Sanchez (who Kaylee even covered!). Now, as more cultures intersect and more identities are represented on screens, there’s no doubt that Filipino talent continues to shine on the international level.

And this isn’t just a case of wanting to yell “Pinoy pride!” to the world. Kaylee is of Filipino heritage, but also a Hawai’i native. She is undoubtedly of a multicultural upbringing. But there’s no need for identity wars here.

While the discourse and criticism on “Pinoy pride” is long-standing and relevant, there’s no reason not to celebrate her culture and identity when she herself made sure to mention her family and her roots. Her visibility and achievements are hers to own, no matter how much she identifies with the different cultures that are part of her life, but there’s nothing wrong with celebrating them with her. And it’s amazing to see people of different cultures—especially ours—strive to reach their dreams on such a big scale. With Kaylee’s talent, story, and drive, she’s definitely one to watch.

Mainland and diaspora Filipinos of the internet, let’s all step away from the identity discourse for a second and acknowledge the excellence that’s radiating all over the globe—Filipino filmmaking and artistry. While we all know it’s important to acknowledge the issues and discussions involving culture, history, and identity—issues and discussions that often cause heated debate on social media—we have room to highlight and recognize initiatives that can bring us together to celebrate our fellow people and their craft.

One such initiative is the San Diego Filipino Film Festival, organized by San Diego Filipino Cinema, an organization that gives platforms to Filipino filmmakers to share their work with the diverse communities in San Diego, California. Held during Filipino American History Month, the SDFFF is the organization’s “centerpiece event that aims to raise awareness for Filipino cinema as an important art form and a powerful tool for representation, education, and entertainment.”

From October 3 to 8, over one hundred films spanning a variety of genres, lengths, and stories will be featured in the festival. Not just that, but there will be awards, as well as panels and Q&As with established and emerging filmmakers to discuss the present and future of Filipino cinema and cultivate a love for the art of filmmaking.

DIVERSITY, CULTURE, AND HERITAGE THROUGH NARRATIVES

The San Diego Filipino Film Festival endeavors to highlight Filipino artists and show their craft on a global level. After a successful festival in 2022, Executive Director and Cofounder of San Diego Filipino Cinema Benito Bautista says, “We continue to uphold and focus on our mission to strengthen our representation through film and to nurture Filipino stories and storytellers through our platform.”

Featured films at the festival include Nurse Unseen, a documentary about the history and humanity behind Filipino nurses becoming the backbone of the United States health industry as well as pandemic frontliners; Searching For Kapwa, an exploration of diasporic culture and identity; Pagbalik (The Return), a daughter’s tribute to her mother, the late “Queen of Visayan Movies” Gloria Sevilla; and the debut of rom-com Asian Persuasion starring Paolo Montalban, Dante Basco, and KC Concepcion; Delia & Sammy starring Rosemarie Gil and Jaime Fabregas, Nanahimik Ang Gabi (A Silent Night) starring Ian Veneracion, Heaven Peralejo, and Mon Confiado, and more.

Interspersed with the narrative features are Shorts Programs, showings of short films by talented young artists. The Shorts Programs are curated into 7 themes: Divergent Tales, Outside the Box, Finding Elsewhere, Connect the Dots, Larger Than Life, Scenes From Home, and DIASPORA.

The full schedule of showings and events can be found here.

VISIONS & VOICES

The festival not just seeks to showcase movies. Through their events, talks, and the very curation of the stories they want to highlight, the San Diego Filipino Film Festival delves into the issues faced by Filipinos and Filipino-Americans involving representation, oppression, racial and cultural discrimination, colonization, and a search for identity, among others. The stories told, celebrated, and discussed at SDFFF bring forth a desire to find, understand, or change filmmakers’—and by extension Filipinos’—positions in the world.

To go more in-depth into these desires and perspectives, the Visions & Voices segment of the festival, titled Emerging Voices in Filipino Cinema: My First Feature, will feature emerging Filipino filmmakers new to navigating the craft. The panel of filmmakers will talk about their craft, their dreams and aspirations, their process as artists, and their struggles and fulfillments.

Aside from the featured films’ directors and emerging filmmakers, other Filipino filmmakers present at the festival include Isabel Sandoval, Irene Soriano, and Eileen Cabiling.

In this grand display of Filipino cinema gone global, SDFFF seeks to dive deep into Filipino and Filipino-American culture and identity all while amplifying Filipino visions, voices, and stories.

7 Songs From P-Pop Groups That Show How Grateful They Are To Their Fans

Nothing like the love between artist and fan.

From SB19 to BINI, these songs from P-pop groups express all the love and gratitude these artists have for each other, their fans, and the music and magic they all make together.

One of the most unique things about loving music these days is how connected musicians are to their supporters and fans—for the better, for the most part. It allows both artists and fans to develop a bond together through music and understand each other in certain ways. Among the feelings cultivated between them, gratitude rises high as artist and fan both help each other keep going.

And in shows of gratitude, musicians often write and perform songs that show just how much they love their fans. Endlessly thankful P-pop groups are no exception. From fan songs to tracks about the band’s journey and tunes imparting reassurance and strength, these seven tracks from HORI7ON, SB19, BINI, G22, Press Hit Play, BGYO, and VXON mean something special to both artist and their ever-supportive fans.

SALAMAT – HORI7ON

The seven young members of global group HORI7ON bare their love for their fans in aptly-named Salamat, a pre-debut single that serves as a letter of love and gratitude to their ANCHORs—their fans that have supported them. Salamat captures the emotions felt all throughout HORI7ON’s journey from survival show Dream Maker to all the milestones they’ve achieved since they debuted.

SLMT – SB19

SB19’s ever-rising popularity as a pioneer P-pop group shows no sign of stopping, but they’ve always sought to remain grounded and thankful for the opportunities they’ve been given. SLMT is a fun, upbeat track that expresses the 5-member group’s thanks to the people that have believed in them. Why is the title missing an A, you ask? That’s because the A is their fans, their A’TIN.

8 – BINI

Eight-member girl group BINI offers lovely lyrics and a sweet message of strength in 8, a cut from their debut album Born To Win. Singing about standing strong despite the doubt and working together towards their dreams, BINI promises to stay together until the end: “Walo hanggang dulo.” The sentiment has become a popular saying among their fandom of BLOOMs.

MUSIKA – G22

The recently-released Musika cover by G22 is their first project as a trio after member Bianca left in September. Musika is originally by singer-songwriter Dionela, but G22 added new meaning to the song as they provide reassurance to their fans that they fully intend to continue making music and connecting with their fans together.

SAMBIT – PRESS HIT PLAY

It’s all for you, all for you / Bituin aabutin, because of you,” four-member P-pop band Press Hit Play sings. Sambit is a heartwarming song telling the story of the band’s journey—all the struggles and the challenges. It emphasizes how much they value all those who stuck by them and the love, encouragement, and support it takes to reach a dream.

PANAHON – BGYO

This uplifting and catchy song is like if BGYO themselves are holding your hand through life. Through lyrics like “Sakin ka muna magpahinga” and “Humingang malalim tumingin sa akin / Kasama mo ako di ka mabibigo,” the 5-member P-pop band conveys inspiration and encouragement as they remind fans of their value. Panahon exemplifies what fans mean when they say “this song is so healing.”

DULO – VXON

A promise to hold on despite uncertainty, VXON’s Dulo is an emotional ballad celebrating their first year in the industry. Written by Franz, the group’s lyricist and composer, Dulo highlights the relationship they formed with each other as members and the one they formed with the people who have supported and stayed with them. “Continue to trust,” they say in a clip in the video, “and we will give everything we have.”
