Here’s What Went Down At NYLON Manila’s Totally Rad Second Anniversary Party

It was totally awesome.

NYLON Manila turned two this November. So, what better way to celebrate that than by throwing it back with a 90s-themed party?

Related: Turning Two: Here’s What To Expect At NYLON Manila’s Second Anniversary Party

November marks a very special occasion for NYLON Manila as it serves as our anniversary month. The past year for us has been a roller coaster, to say the least, with its ups and downs, and one that is worth celebrating. As such, we weren’t just going to let our birthday go by with just a simple event. We went special for our second anniversary with a party on November 22.

And because we here at NYLON Manila love to do things differently, we didn’t just have a regular party. We threw it back with the theme of the 90s given how the comeback has proven to be one of the biggest themes of the year. Here then is a rundown of the happenings at NYLON Manila’s second-anniversary party.

90S LOVE

Guests made their way to the basement of Makati Cinema Square for NYLON Manila’s second birthday party at NoKal Manila. Once guests stepped into the venue, they were greeted by a disco ball that illuminated the whole room, silver balloons, and the NYLON Manila logo at the front of the place. They also enjoyed drinks such as bottles of Heineken. Beside the main area was a GUESS photo booth that was a popular attraction of the night. It was busy practically the whole night as guests lined up to get their photo booth print outs and don some stylish GUESS denim jackets.

The theme was the 90s, so the guests made sure to show up and show out with their fits that screamed of the era. There was an abundance of denim jeans, overalls, bandanas, sports jackets, and the like. Standouts we spotted include Zoie Garcia in her simple yet chic denim overalls and Chezka Carandang in her bad-ass aviators and leather jacket from GUESS. You could say it was like stepping into the past as we celebrated our birthday.

CELEBRATING THE YEAR THAT WAS

After the guests arrived, a quick program began with NYLON Manila’s Brand Associate Elyse Ilagan welcoming everyone to the party. She then thanked the night’s sponsors for making the night possible. Elyse then called on NYLON Manila’s Fashion and Beauty Editor Lyn Alumno to introduce a special game from OPPO. Throughout the night, an OPPO x NYLON Manila disco ball was passed around as guests struck a pose with the ball and had their photo taken on the OPPO Reno8.

As shared by OPPO’s Product Marketing Manager Louie Ngo, the Reno8 is a master of taking portrait shots which is why it wasn’t easy picking a winner. But in the end, Alan Segui served the hardest and won the contest. Meanwhile, Jeyo was able to win a bonus trivia game. Their prize? Oh, a brand new OPPO Reno8 and OPPO Enco buds, no big deal. Go to a party and win a brand-new smartphone, what’s not to love about that?

NYLON Manila’s Editor-In-Chief Angelo Ramirez de Cartagena then shared NYLON Manila’s many successes this 2022 and teased what is to come in an even bigger, bolder, and braver 2023. And, as the final pasabog of the night, we revealed not one, but three covers for our anniversary month. Since we are all about highlighting what’s new, now, and next, our three cover stars were young personalities who embody that: Miel Pangilinan, Mavy Legaspi, and Kendra Kramer. Miel and Mavy were on hand for the cover reveal as they shared a few words of gratitude. Finally, everyone joined in to sing happy birthday, cake from Aegyo Cakes included.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

The night ended with partying as guests took to the dance floor to move to the beats of DJ Butta B who played some of the best the 90s to get jiggy with it. And if guests weren’t on the dance floor, they were mingling with each other. In one corner, some of our fav content creators like Gaia Poly, Gigiboi, and Raiza Contawi were coming together. On another part, our cover stars Miel Pangilinan and Mavy Legaspi marveled at their photos. We even spotted a wholesome moment of Deo Cabrera fangirling over Ian Pangilinan.

And before guests went home, they got a loot bag courtesy of Careline filled with their makeup goodies and a customized Lollykiss lollipop that was a favorite among attendees.

Thank you to all our guests who came. The Totally Rad NYLON Manila anniversary shindig wouldn’t have been possible without the kindness and generosity of Heineken, Careline, GUESS, and OPPO for helping make this event possible. And most especially, thank you to our readers who helped make the past year that it was. There was a lot of celebrating during NYLON Manila’s second year, and our totally rad anniversary party captured that spirit.

Travel besties.

Whether you’re missing hanging out with your bestie or you just want a good dose of dopamine, the new travel vlog by Maris Racal and Awra Briguela will surely brighten up your day.

Have you ever missed going out with that best friend who always makes you laugh out loud? While you’re probably too busy to travel, in the meantime, you’ll get that same satisfying feeling vicariously when you watch Maris Racal travel to Bangkok with her best sis Awra Briguela in her latest vlog.

The Suntok Sa Buwan and The Kangks Show co-stars are such a treat to watch as they journey through the streets of Thailand serving you a ton of charismatic humor that, on the one hand, will get you LOLing hard, and on the other, will make you immediately call your bestie and set up the itinerary for your next trip together. Below are some of the highlights of their getaway that’s just pure joy.

JUST LIKE HOME

A street food vendor in Bangkok

“Welcome to Pasig!” Just a couple of minutes into the vlog and you’re in for some laugh-out-loud moments. After arriving at their Airbnb in Bangkok, Maris couldn’t help but notice the view’s similarity with that of Metro Manila. “May Pares din sila dito oh,” Awra says as they stroll along the street with street vendors just like home.

“TRAFFIC SA EDSA”

Maris laughing at Awra's jokes

After being lost for a while, the team finds themselves on a bus. And with a strikingly familiar view of the Thai traffic, Maris Racal and Awra Briguela rise to the occasion as your resident reporters. “Kita niyo naman ang trapik sa EDSA, papalapit na ang rush hour,” jokes Maris with a straight face. “Kapag rush hour kasi guys naguuwian na ang mga estudyante, grabe ang daming poging estudyante,” Awra replies as the two burst into laughter.

FOOD TRIP

Maris Racal and Awra Briguela saying "chicken nuggets" while eating Thai food

A trip to Bangkok will not be complete without trying local food. “Nasa Binondo na tayo!” Awra says in jest as the team fill their tummies with some Thai culinary goodness. And as usual, the talented comedic duo found another opportunity to be funny recreating that viral “chicken nuggets” meme while eating.

AWRA’S THAI

Awra Briguela laughing

It’s pretty convenient to have Awra Briguela as your travel buddy in Thailand who knows a couple of Thai words. At one point in the vlog, Awra takes over as she flexes her Thai speaking skills while they’re on their way to their next destination. Surprisingly, the cab driver also knows some Filipino (cuss) words, much to the amusement of the barkada.

THINKING AT THE TEMPLE

When in Thailand, it’s a must to immerse yourselves in the country’s serene and historically rich temples. And that’s exactly what Maris Racal and Awra Briguela did as they revel in the calm of the temples in Ayutthaya. It has given them the time to reflect, so much so that Awra just “kept thinking.”

8 Moments That Showcased Mavy Legaspi And Carmina Villarroel’s Unbreakable Bond

line
That's goals right there.

Mavy Legaspi is an unapologetically proud mama’s boy through and through as seen in his solid bond with his mother.

Related: For Mavy Legaspi, Loving Yourself Is His Life’s Mantra

It is often said that as children grow up, they get less and less close to their parents. But that doesn’t apply to Mavy Legaspi. Despite being a rising Gen Z star making a name for himself, Mavy is a proud family man. No matter where he goes in life, Mavy will always have a special place in his heart for them, especially for his mom, Carmina Villarroel.

Mavy was, is, and will continue to be Carmina’s baby boy as the young actor isn’t afraid to flaunt on social media just how much he loves her. It’s the kind of relationship any mom would want with their sons, which makes it even more precious. Here are a few of those special moments where Mavy and Carmina’s bond was on a different level of wholesome.

BUYING HIS MOM A HERMES BAG

Mavy Legaspi's birthday gift to his mom

Being the generous son that he is, Mavy is more than willing to splurge and treat his mom. Case in point, during his mom’s birthday this year, Mavy got her a pink Hermès bag while sharing the sweetest birthday message. “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, As long as I’m living, My Mommy you’ll be.”

DATE NIGHT TO THE BALL

Mavy and Carmina at the GMA Gala Night

Mavy Legaspi looked beyond dapper when he attended the GMA Thanksgiving Gala Night. Carmina, meanwhile, looked stunning and Mavy sang her praises that would warm any heart. “With the most beautiful woman in the gala. mama’s boy til’ the day that i die.” Beauty inside and out really does run in the family.

MOTHER’S DAY GREETING

We’ll be needing Mavy to reveal how he writes his captions, because they always tug at the heartstrings. Just take a look at the sweet message he had for his mom on one of the most important days of the year, Mother’s Day. “A mother is a boy’s first true love. thank you for always being there for me. i love you! you will always be number 1!” Mavy Legaspi best boy indeed.

THE ORIGIN OF MAVY’S NAME

In case you didn’t know, Mavy, which is short for Maverick, got his name after Carmina saw Top Gun on TV. 21 years later, mother and son had a date night at the movies where they watched the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. It was a full-circle moment.

THROWBACK PICS

From when he was a baby to now as a young adult, Mavy Legaspi will always be his mom’s number one supporter and vice versa.

MOTHER-SON DATE NIGHT

One of the ways you can tell if the guy is a green flag is the way he treats his mother. In the case of Mavy Legaspi, he’s definitely a bright shade of green. The fact that this date night with his mom at the Grand Hyatt Manila is the first post on his Instagram should tell you as much.

SET VISIT

It always is special whenever a loved one visits you at your place of work such as in this moment when Mavy visited his mom on set. There’s nothing purer than the love between a mother and his son.

WHENEVER MAVY GOES TO A LOCK-IN TAPING

Mavy and Carmina

As children get older, parents will have to deal with their babies eventually leaving the coop. That’s what crying Carmina Villarroel had to deal with in 2021 when Mavy had to leave for a few months for his lock-in taping. Even though it wasn’t a permanent leave, this was the first time Mavy left the house for an extended period. “Time for you to spread your wings my forever baby boy. Always remember that we are here for you and we are all proud of you,” wrote Carmina. While subsequent lock-in tapping goodbyes weren’t as emotional, it showed just how close she is to Mavy.

9 Times Miel Pangilinan Proved That She Has A Big NCTzen Heart

line
Her NCTzen card is staying busy.

Just like you, Miel Pangilinan is also a hardcore K-Pop stan. And online, we witness her fascinating love for her best boys, NCT.

Related: It’s Her Time Now: Miel Pangilinan  Is Coming Up And Out, This Time On Her Own Terms

Apart from being the youngest daughter of the Megastar, Sharon Cuneta, and former senator Kiko Pangilinan, Miel Pangilinan is also repping the young generation with a proud queer voice. And this manifests in Miel’s interests who, like most of the youth captured by the Hallyu Wave, is also a passionate K-Pop stan. Her bias? Well, it’s none other than the chart-topping 23-member boy band NCT. Let’s look at some of the moments where Miel embodies the NCTzen spirit.

MIEL’S NCTZEN TIKTOKER AGENDA

@ponyofilm

im so sorry

♬ Homelander nothing left to lose – 15econdreviews

As the avid NCTZen that she is, Miel is more than ready to accommodate the curious minds about NCT who has over two dozen of members (as of the moment), four sub-units, jam-packed history, countless concerts, songs, videos, and not to mention memes. Need an NCT primer? Miel is here for you.

NEO CITY CONCERT

Here’s another proof of Miel Pangilinan being a proud Czennie during NCT 127’s NEO CITY: THE LINK concert at the Mall of Asia Arena last September. It’s the nine-member South Korean act’s first solo concert and Miel, the hardcore NCTzen that she is, was there to welcome the boys.

NCTZEN MOMMA

It seems that being a K-popper runs in Miel’s family as her mother, Sharon Cuneta, is also another proud NCTzen. Calling herself an NCTZen momma, Sharon posted a photo of her and Miel during the K-POP World Music Festival in Manila last 2019, with a special mention to Sharon’s bias, Taeyong. Thanks to celebrity comedian Vice Ganda and the festival host Ryan Bang, the mother-daughter tandem had the chance to have a little sweet fangirl moment with NCT127 backstage.

NCT DREAM

Apart from NCT127, Miel Pangilinan also stans hard for NCT Dream. And that is evident when Miel went to watch the seven-member boy group at the Begin Again: K-pop Edition concert last May where NCT Dream was joined by other South Korean acts like SHINee’s Key, WEi, and Alice. Together with her sister Kakie and her NCTzen barkada, Miel was among the sea of fans proudly waving their green lightsticks.

MIEL’S JENO

@ponyofilm #stitch with @므엉 ♬ original sound – miel

Miel Pangilinan’s ultimate bias is NCT Dream’s main rapper and lead singer Jeno. In a TikTok video captioned with the phrase, “HES MINE,” Miel couldn’t help but fall hard for Jeno while watching one of his on-stage performances. In another TikTok post, Miel’s love for Jeno is on full display as she plays the “first letter of your soulmate’s name” video challenge, intentionally repeating the letter J all over again. Truly, Jeno is Miel’s passion.

JOHNNY THE THIRST TRAP

@ponyofilm

extremely attainable

♬ original sound – 𝑵𝑨𝑻𝑪𝑺𝑳𝑼𝑽𝑹❦

Another bias of Miel is NCT 127’s Johnny whom, as her TikTok video explicitly says, she considers as her “extremely attainable” Christmas wish. In another video, Miel Pangilinan looks stunned as she thirsts over Johnny’s lines in NCT 127’s single, Vitamin.

SINGING NCTZEN

@ponyofilm

i love nct i love noise music i love 2 baddies

♬ 2 Baddies – NCT 127

And then there’s Miel Pangilinan in full NCTzen glory as she ardently rocks out to NCT 127’s comeback single 2 Baddies. “I love nct i love noise music i love 2 baddies,” Miel’s caption reads as she lip syncs to her fave’s upbeat single, leaving no crumbs on the plate.

DANCING NCTZEN

@ponyofilm

im wearing shorts tiktok this is fake everything

♬ original sound – miel

Of course, we also get to see Miel Pangilinan channel her inner dancer as she busts some moves to NCT 127’s 1, 2, 7 (Time Stops), feeling all of it like a true-blue NCTzen.

CRYING NCTZEN

@ponyofilm

knocking at ur door at 3am BABY CAN WE FIX IT

♬ Time Lapse – NCT 127

And as with all K-pop stans, it’s hard not to be overwhelmed while fangirling. Like Miel Pangilinan in her TikTok video where she’s overcome with emotions, crying her heart out to NCT 127’s Time Lapse.

OPM ICONS

At ASAP Natin ‘To, we’re always treated to exciting musical extravaganza with the biggest and most talented musicians in the archipelago. And as ASAP conquers Las Vegas, the Filipino musical prowess is once again on full display. For the first part of the vibrant concert released last November 13, the biggest stalwarts of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) including concert king Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano, Ogie Alcasid, and Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez gave a roaring and rousing performance of OPM hits like AFTERIMAGE’s Mangarap Ka and Rivermaya’s Posible.

The ultra-talented group also serenaded the fully packed arena with a medley of our favorite teleserye songs like FPJ’s Ang Probinsiyano’s Ililigtas Ka Niya and Hanggang Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan from Walang Hanggan. Joined by Janella Salvador and Filipino-American theater stars, they also performed some of the greatest Broadway classics, all of them shining with sheer musical power.

DONBELLE

Our New Gen Phenomenal Love Team, DonBelle, did not disappoint as they showered the audiences with lots of kilig. Also present in the ASAP Natin ‘To show were the international Bubblies who replied with cheers and applause. On the sparkly and flowery stage, Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano performed BINI’s Huwag Muna Tayong Umuwi, which is also part of the soundtrack of their latest film offering, An Inconvenient Love, leaving the Las Vegas crowd with some love team sweetness.

BELLE MARIANO

Proving the multi-talented star that she is and making her Bubblies proud, Belle Mariano also had the time to shine on her own. She literally shines, busting some moves with her signature grace, charm, and allure.

IÑIGO PASCUAL

Singer-actor Iñigo Pascual returns to the ASAP Natin ‘To stage on a powerful note with a performance of his banger hit Danger. Iñigo was then joined by Kyle Echarri and Fil-Am rapper EZ Mil to deliver his much-celebrated single Dahil Sa’yo, much to the delight of their fans. Iñigo is also of the Hollywood musical drama series where he stars in the role opposite Susan Sarandon. Filipino pride, indeed.

DARREN ESPANTO

When it comes to giving exceptional performances, we know we could trust Darren Espanto who is indubitably an all-around performer. Like he was born out of the ASAP Natin ‘To stage, Darren effortlessly bodied his performance while singing Moira Dela Torre’s Babalik Sa’yo. As expected, Darren nailed every bit of it.

BINI AND BGYO

Bannering P-Pop on the world stage, sibling groups BINI and BGYO gave the Las Vegas audience their deserved glimpse into local musical talent. The Nation’s Girl Group performed one of their latest singles, Strings, while the Aces of P-Pop captivated the viewers with their magnetic presentation of Magnet. Both having released their comeback albums recently, BINI and BGYO somehow turned ASAP Natin ‘To into a P-Pop concert of its own. And what a proud moment for our very own P-pop idols.

AC BONIFACIO

Our effortless new gen dance princess AC Bonifacio aced her Asap Natin ‘To In Vegas performance hitting every move with fascinating precision, fiery attitude, and swag.

JANELLA SALVADOR AND JANE DE LEON

Totally buggin' now that the party's over.

Safe to say it was like, a totally rad night.

Partying in an old building’s basement all while dressed up like it’s an underground rave seems like an opening scene of a gritty 90s coming-of-age film. As oddly specific as it was, it’s most probably the perfect description of NYLON Manila’s Hella Rad birthday party which was co-presented by OPPO. That night, everyone felt like a main character at some point, because they all came prepared with the sickest outfits. From furry bucket hats to busting out the good ol’ denims, here are some of our favorite ‘fits from the anniversary party. 🕺

Into The Spotlight: Kendra Kramer Is Here To Defy Expectations

line
A young lady of defiant beauty.

From being a charming little star to becoming a young lady of many trades, Kendra Kramer is ready to make her mark. Bearing youthful confidence and striking wit, the multifaceted teenager speaks about her big dreams, mental health, beauty, and taking responsibility.

Being thrust into the spotlight at a very young age is too risky an undertaking that most of the time entails leaving one’s childhood life and privacy open to public scrutiny. At such a vulnerable period, the limelight can make or break one’s aspirations and dreams. Especially in today’s age where a saturated online world becomes at once an expanse filled with colorful opportunities and riddled with hatred and insecurities. Yet brave and passionate enough to tackle these challenges is Clair Kendra Kramer, a young digital darling who is able to build and wield an influence with grace and faith.

We have witnessed her stunning metamorphosis from being a charismatic child to being a gorgeous teenager whose beauty, in and out, has earned her hundreds of thousands of supporters. A rightful torchbearer of this generation, Kendra Kramer is more than ready to make her mark, leading with a refreshing voice that strives and needs to be heard.

THE MULTIFACETED KENDRA KRAMER

Born to Cheska Garcia-Kramer, a celebrity model-actress, and Doug Kramer, a former basketball champion, Kendra Kramer seems destined to be a star of her own. At five years old, she has charmed us with her unforgettable television commercials (you might recall her from those endearing and LSS-inducing juice ads), which in itself have become time capsules of her promising career. Now thirteen years young, Kendra has been in countless age-appropriate endorsements, a model of her own brands, has appeared in fashion editorials, and is one-fifth of her influencer-family Team Kramer, who has become both a model and an aspiration to millions of Filipino families.

However, apart from achieving these triumphs so far, the teenage star is also currently carving her own path in school, balancing work and being an eighth grade student. “I think the best thing to do is just time management,” says Kendra who also plays arnis, does ballet, and takes singing and drum lessons. “Sometimes I do have to sacrifice some of my free time in order to do everything that I like, like my work, my school, and my hobbies. And for me, that’s okay. Because I know that there’s always another day and I can always do that again.”

Not only that, the young influencer also excels in sports as a competitive swimmer. “My mom used to be a swimmer before and I tried swimming for a while and they saw that I had potential in it,” recalls Kendra. “So, they decided to let me pursue swimming. And soon, swimming started to grow on me more and more, especially after the pandemic, because I got to finally have a team and my new school, and it’s so fun because I train with them every day.” Her passion for swimming is palpable during this conversation, radiating on screen with childlike wonder and optimism. “Swimming is really fun for me,” adds Kendra who sees herself pursuing swimming until college, “and I will continue to grow in that sport.”

And speaking of college, while Kendra Kramer views herself as too young to think about it, she is also admirably aware of her big goals and ambitions. “I’m planning to probably take a business course, because I want to start maybe a beauty business of my own when I’m older,” intimates Kendra, who has been fast becoming a fashion icon of her own, exuding easy elegance in her stylish offerings online. “And at the same time, I also kind of want to be like a pediatrician,” she continues, overflowing with enthusiasm. “It’s also really interesting. So, maybe I will take a doctor’s course. I’m not very sure yet.”

Asked if she wants to pursue a career in showbiz like her mom or in sports like her dad, Kendra makes it clear that she does not want to be confined by these choices. “Well, I don’t really limit myself to the jobs of my parents,” she asserts in an assured and decisive tone. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be like, I just want to do showbiz, or I just want to be an athlete or both. Because I also want to be a doctor. Part of me also wants to become a fashion designer. Another part of me wants to become a businesswoman. Another part of me wants to be a model.”

FAMILY AS HER HEARTH AND HOME

While openly expressing her thoughts, Kendra Kramer never fails to go back to her core and constant that is her family. As evinced in their Team Kramer episodes, it is in her tight-knit family where Kendra has rightfully found the bedrock of her values and character. Every word she utters glimmers with familial joy and inspiration, always appreciative of her parents and her siblings who are also her biggest fans.

Knit dress by DARLENNE RIVERA, Sheer ruffled top by CV STUDIOS

As the eldest child, Kendra understands her duty to be a good influence and role model as Ate Kenken to Scarlett and Gavin. “I don’t really want to impose so much [on Scarlett and Gavin], because they might find it kind of annoying, if I always tell them,” relates Kendra. “So, I don’t use words, but I do use my actions as an example for them, so that they will see my example and they will follow what I’m doing. By showing them a proper example, they will do the same also.”

And always helping her become a good example and reach her fullest potential are her parents who also double as her and her siblings’ managers. “I find it very nice, because Mommy and Daddy make a lot of time for me and they make sure I get the best projects,” shares Kendra with her mommy Cheska beside her, subtly beaming with pride. “And I’m very glad that they’re my managers because I trust them a lot. It’s really convenient also and at the same time, they make sure that my work isn’t too long so I still have time to do other things I want to do.”

It is also appropriate that Kendra Kramer has her parents, who know her best and have also been in the limelight for a long time, to guide her and give her insightful advice in dealing with fame. “They give me a lot of advice,” relays Kendra, whose most of childhood has been spent in the public eye. “And all of their advice is relevant to when I grow older, and even now, so I just keep everything that they tell me.” Talking about the best advice she has received from her parents so far, the young artist articulates, “Like to always be kind and that kindness and goodness are unconditional. So, you need to be kind to everyone even though they don’t like you or even though you don’t like them. Kindness is not conditional. You need to be kind to everyone.”

If you have been following Team Kramer’s videos, you would know that the family is also passionate about their Christian faith. On Kendra Kramer’s Instagram page, for example, you’ll see that she describes herself in her bio as “God-fearing” first and foremost, with even a collection of stories dedicated to her bible study journey. And when asked about the biggest life lesson she’s learned so far, the teenager’s spirituality shines. “I have learned many lessons so far even though I’m very young because my Mommy and my Daddy teach me so many things every day. Especially our golden rule: don’t do unto others what you don’t want others to do unto you.”

In one precious daughter-mother moment during the Zoom interview, Kendra has shared a heartwarming message to her mom whom she considers as her best example. “I think that my Mom is the best example because I see her actions every day and they’re always equal to the words that she says in social media,” Kendra proudly says of her Mommy Cheska who is visibly touched. “And so I really liked that about her. I just want to follow her example and her example is really great. Her example has taught me so many wonderful things. And so I just want to follow my Mom.” Kendra points to her obviously delighted mother who thanks her back.

THIS GENERATION’S VOICE

With almost nine hundred thousand followers online, Kendra Kramer’s impact is indubitably immense and far-reaching. For a young girl like her, having this amount of clout might be too great a responsibility. But Kendra is disarmingly aware of this fact, acknowledging the power that her platform holds and her voice’s potential to inspire young people like her. “Having the influence I have right now and breaking into showbiz, it requires a lot of responsibility,” says Kendra with stunning eloquence and self-awareness you’ll forget she’s just in her early adolescence.

Knit dress by DARLENNE RIVERA, Sheer ruffled top by CV STUDIOS

“I take great responsibility for [my followers] and I try my best to influence them the best way I can with a platform that God has given me. I want to just say to all the girls that if you want to pursue a job in showbiz or you want to be like an influencer too, it requires a lot of responsibility and that you should share godly content, that you should be a good example to everyone else, and that you should only take what you can handle. So, if you think you can handle it then that’s fine.”

And about being able to handle the heft of being in the spotlight, earlier this year, Kendra made rounds online when her daddy Doug posted a photo of one of her fashion editorials. In the photograph shot by Jerick Sanchez for MEGA’s 30th anniversary issue, Kendra looked every inch like our next queen to be crowned, with most of the netizens noticing her resemblance to Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray.

Knit dress by DARLENNE RIVERA, Sheer ruffled top by CV STUDIOS

“Our little Catriona,” so they say, with sweet praises turning to strong expectations. But Kendra takes it gracefully, grateful for the admiration yet also cognizant of her own passions and interests. “I think beauty is diverse. And everybody’s beautiful in their own way,” she says like a true born queen. “I actually want to join not necessarily beauty pageants, but I want to join fashion shows. Beauty pageants are interesting to me. But I’d rather walk in, you know, like runway shows or fashion shows.”

Furthermore, as a representative of Generation Z, Kendra Kramer is notably in touch with the issues that concern her and her peers who are living in a world that’s increasingly becoming more digitized. “Social media is a big responsibility,” she propounds with commendable maturity. “And so when you use it, you want to make sure that you’re responsible with the content you share and the content you see as well. You can have social media, there’s nothing wrong with it, but you should be very responsible with everything.”

Crocheted sweater by EISLEY NAVELA

And just like most young people today, Kendra Kramer also recognizes the mental and emotional toll of being too dependent on social media especially with her generation. “Sometimes my negative and intrusive thoughts get the best of me, but that’s why I have my family,” she shares. “If I have negative thoughts or intrusive thoughts, I tell my parents about how I can deal with it and how I can turn my negative thoughts into positive ones. So as teenagers my age, girls and boys, if you have any negative or intrusive thoughts getting the best of you, you can always confide in your family, they’ll always help you,” she continues with a cadence so discerning and perceptive for a teenager like her.

With her plethora of skills and talent, an ever-supportive family, an influential voice, which is becoming more resonant than ever, and a fresh perspective weighted by youthful confidence, self-awareness, and remarkable maturity, Kendra Kramer has an undeniably lustrous future ahead of her. But amid all these successes and great ambitions, Kendra knows, as the intelligent young lady that she is, to take it one step at a time, chasing her dreams while cherishing moments, minute and major, in the present. “I want to achieve many things. But right now all I’m really thinking about is school and friends and just enjoying my childhood. So, I don’t really think about my future as much but if I were to achieve something, it would probably just be like having good grades until the end, you know, and making as many good friends as I can. And also, yeah, just enjoying life.”

For Mavy Legaspi, Loving Yourself Is His Life’s Mantra

Actor, family man, and self-love advocate.

From his acting career, MavLine, family, and more, Mavy Legaspi has no time for the haters, and is only looking to please his biggest critic, himself.

It’s Her Time Now: Miel Pangilinan  Is Coming Up And Out, This Time On Her Own Terms

The Philippine showbiz industry is no stranger to seeing children of celebrities follow in their parent’s footsteps. What the rest of the world is now calling nepotism babies is not a new phenomenon in the country. In fact, many of today’s brightest stars can trace their fame to their notable last names. And one such star is Maverick Legaspi.

As the son of actors Zoren Legaspi and Carmina Villarroel, Mavy was destined for the spotlight at an early age. He’s a known presence on TV thanks to his numerous commercials with his parents and twin sister, Cassy. It was a no-brainer then that he would transition his into acting. But when it comes to Mavy Legaspi, what he has to offer comes from a genuine place of love and respect for the craft. Despite what some may say, Mavy means business, and it’s showing in all the right places.

BORN FOR IT

If destiny played out differently, Mavy Legaspi could have been succeeding in a whole different field, tennis, as the young actor tried to make it as a professional tennis player. The pull of the set proved to be one he couldn’t ignore. “I’ve always wanted to be an actor growing up most especially because of my parents. I was very young and was so amazed when [my parents] stepped on set.” He adds, “[E]very time I step foot on set, or I am in front of the camera, there’s this different feeling I get. And I believe it’s something that’s in me. And from there, I really accepted the fact that I want it.”

Even if Mavy came from a “regular” family, that innate passion for acting would still be there thanks to his cinephile side. “I’m a big fan of the film industry. I appreciate different types of genres of movies. And, you know, it’s cool when you get to portray different roles in life. And after all that, you get to go back home and be yourself. It’s just really fun. It’s a tricky game, but very, very interesting.”

NEW GEN STATUS

Like with the different roles actors often play, Mavy Legaspi’s public persona is ever-changing. To some, he is the son of famous actors. To others, he is a ubiquitous presence in TV commercials. But these days, Mavy Legaspi is carving a name for himself as one of the new generation’s leading actors. It’s still early days for Mavy, but already he’s had a few hits, most notably the role of Sebastian in the high-profile teleserye I Left My Heart in Sorsogon. And with more projects in the works, Mavy might just be on his way to being one of Gen Z’s next top actors.

It’s a distinction that he both honored and humbled by. “Honestly, it’s such a blur, but I gotta keep both feet on the ground because I haven’t reached my dreams or goals yet. I’m just about to.” Cynics can accuse Mavy of getting his roles because of who he is. It’s criticism that he knows comes with the territory. But interestingly, at just 21 years old, Mavy doesn’t let those disparaging comments get to him.

Boiler suit by MAISON SORIANO

Yes, he has his haters, but to him, the only hater he wants to address is himself. “I’m not only here to prove the doubters wrong. But I’m not here to prove myself wrong, because I know what I’m capable of. I can’t help but want to show myself that I can do so much more. And if anything, the pressure from outside doesn’t really get to me. It’s only how I think for myself and how I pressure myself because, at the end of the day, it’s going to be my work out there. It’s going to be me out there.”

IT’S ME, HI

Like many people his age, Mavy Legaspi can sometimes be his own biggest critic. The self-doubt is real. “Self-doubt comes in different forms, whether the little things or big things. It will always be there, but it’s a scary feeling when it starts to take its toll on your main goals or desires.” And while Mavy can sometimes feel like a monster on the hill too big to hang out with, he also uses that negativity to push himself further.

“Those self-doubts push me more. I don’t mind the doubts around me, whatever people want to say about me. Self-doubt scares me the most because it’s like me joining with their side when I’m supposed to be on my side. But all you have to do is just really overcome it. And you know that you’re capable of so many things and achieving so much as long as you put in the work and be patient. Just enjoy the ride. That’s the most important thing that I always tell myself just to enjoy the ride.”

Beige sheer vest and wide legged pants by RAJO LAUREL

It also does help Mavy’s parents have been supportive of his dreams. But more importantly, they’re there to ground Mavy. Egos are checked out at the Legaspi household. “They can’t help but always remind me to keep both feet on the ground. That’s the most important thing. They don’t want anything to get to me. And they just want me to focus on my dreams and goals because they’re very supportive of them. Big or small, everything is a big achievement for them. And that really means a lot. And it’s an extra push to keep moving forward and keep going.”

HERE COMES MAVLINE

Aside from his famous last name and bubbling acting career, one major factor that has helped bring the young star to the forefront is his popular love team with Kyline Alcantara, fondly called MavLine. Nearly all new-gen actors get their love teams soon enough, but rarely does the first outing bring about this much supported and talked-about fervor as MavLine has gotten.

Beige sheer vest and wide legged pants by RAJO LAUREL

“It all started with just one interview where I signed with Sparkle way back. They just asked who I wanted to work with. And the first person I pointed out was Kyline because she was already my good friend,” shares Mavy. “And when the time came that they introduced us as a love team. It was crazy, it was very overwhelming. I didn’t know I could receive so much support and love from people that believe in this partnership. It’s been the best feeling.” While some love teams are a coming together of two relative strangers, that isn’t the case for MavLine. Mavy and Kyline have been friends for years so their comfort with each other isn’t just for show. “We know that we have each other’s back. And no matter what happens, we’re safe in each other’s arms.”

Their long-time friendship is why Mavy feels the love team is so, well, loved. But he also points out that it’s a beautiful friendship molded by good and bad times. “When people describe beauty, it’s always so positive. But of course, beauty comes with struggle. And I honestly feel like just the things that we went through in our respective lives as best friends whatsoever. I guess it translates when they see us together, and people get to relate to that. And they just want to see realness, genuineness, and pure honesty.”

Boiler suit by MAISON SORIANO

He continues, “I believe that is what MavLine is all about. They know that it took a while for us to appreciate and love ourselves before giving love elsewhere. And we just spread that message that it’s okay not to love another first as long as you love, appreciate, and take care of yourself first. So far, I believe we’ve been spreading that message because we’re very open about stuff like that.”

If there’s anything you can say about Mavy Legaspi, being fake is not one of them. Instead of talking about a prim and proper relationship, he openly acknowledges that the ups and downs he and Kyline went through were what made their bond stronger. “We allowed each other just to be ourselves whether it became ugly to the public, ugly to each other. We just saw the beauty in everything.”

LEAD WITH LOVE

At his young age, Mavy has learned to not let the haters get to him. He’s developed a pretty thick skin when someone tries to come for him. The buck stops though when it comes to his family. “When it comes to criticism, or things that are pointed towards my family members, that’s when I’m the most sensitive. I’m a family guy, and they mean so much to me, most, especially if I know what other people are saying is very insensitive, or not true. I won’t be afraid to stand up for them.”

A scorching clapback is not what Mavy dishes out though. Instead, his years as a public figure have taught him to respond from a place of love. “[W]hen they’re malicious comments like those, you just got to respond to them most genuinely and kindly because if you clap back with the same heat, it’s gonna have this domino effect of hatred. We need more kindness in the room. And also at the same time being a public figure to so many, I know that my influence is great. So, I also have to watch for that.”

NEXT BIG NAME, WITH A HEART

It’s safe to say that Mavy Legaspi’s career is just getting started. From the shadows of being known as just a Legaspi, Mavy is out here slowly but surely proving that he’s his own person and actor. And speaking of acting, he already has a few dream roles in mind. The first is an action movie as he was inspired by his dad who also starred in his fair share of action films. And the second is a drama co-starring his mom, who Mavy marveled at how she could talk for ages yet get into character in a snap of a finger. “Those two roles but anything whatsoever, I’m willing to do and try because no matter what they give me or put my way, I’m always gonna give it my 100%.”

In general, what Mavy is bringing to the table is not just new energy, but a thrust of learning to accept and love yourself. While critics often like to pigeonhole Mavy as one thing, he wants to bring about a message that labels are not important. In an age where social media often puts labels on people to follow, Mavy’s response is to forget all that. “To be unique and different is just by being yourself. I really want to put across there that you can make it just by accepting, loving, and believing in yourself. No matter where you come from or what background you have, you can make it by just putting yourself out there.”

And speaking of going against labels and stereotypes, Mavy himself would like it if people would stop thinking that he’s self-centered. His privileged upbringing and notable last name do not color the way he sees people. “I’m approachable. And wherever you come from all walks of life, I always approach people. I’m not the type where there’s a social status that I only approach. I just want to have fun. I’m cool with everyone.”

While his life may seem like a red carpet to success, where he is now is mainly driven by his ambitions, dreams, and goals. Nothing can take away the hard work Mavy has done as well as the dynamic and honest energy he possesses. It’s a kind of life Mavy would do time and time again if he could do it all over. “I would be born into this over and over in every universe. It all starts with my parents; they’ve been nothing but supportive and they never really put this on me. They really never pressured me into this. It was never about the money or the fame. They’re always about whether are we comfortable doing it.”

Just like the iconic Tom Cruise character he’s named after; Mavy Legaspi is ready to take flight. With his wings prepped and jet fueled, the young maverick is out to explore the skies and reach new heights. And with the refreshing mindset he has, Mavy is going places.

It’s Her Time Now: Miel Pangilinan  Is Coming Up And Out, This Time On Her Own Terms

line
Hello, world, meet Yellie.

Aware of the reputation that precedes her, brought about by her political and showbiz pedigree, Miel Pangilinan is taking all this in realistic stride. Valuing herself above all else, she is raring and ready to show us what she’s got.

For Mavy Legaspi, Loving Yourself Is His Life’s Mantra

The last time we meet Miel Pangilinan is in an intimate Halloween party somewhere in the labyrinth of Poblacion in Makati. With a warm glow spilling from the door that was ajar and a speckle of light coloring the dark room in whimsy, there she stood, dressed as Britney Spears from the …Baby One More Time music video, or some version of it at least. Truth be told, her presence was more than enough to bring the room alive. Whether it was unabashed laughter straight from her core or the conversations she made from end to end, all the joy could be traced to where she was. When confronted with this fact, however, she is pleasantly surprised. Perhaps only realizing this now, she simmers in the thought and relents, “ You know what, I guess I really am happy right now.”

“It’s still obviously an up and down thing every day, but on an average, I think I am pretty happy. I learned that being hateful towards yourself, it doesn’t really get you anywhere. You know, some may find temporary satisfaction in being self-depracating, but I feel a lot happier, because I have identified a lot of the things that was going with me as a kid and I am aware of how I feel about myself,” she says, this time over a call that followed the drawling rhythm of a slowed down Sunday. “Just being able to acknowledge that and it exists and to move forward with that, I am happier because I understand myself more now.”

As an unparalleled sense of joy courses through her being as we speak, Miel Pangilinan is the first person to volunteer that it was never an easy path to get there. Her pedigree and privilege aside, which she fully acknowledges where and when she can, the young woman who practically grew before our very eyes asserts that it took a lot to even feel comfortable being herself, especially in the midst of a punishing pandemic.

“Growing up in quarantine, it’s like you experience highschool anxiety and struggles, but alone. I went through a peak of emotions and things, but I came out of it getting over a lot of that social trauma about being in middle school. I was able to work through most of it, but there was just a lot that changed,” shares Miel Pangilinan. “Even outside quarantine, people go through a lot of changes within two years, but ‘yun nga, the pandemic exacerbated it for our generation, which gave us a lot of time to think about ourselves and what we’re doing.”

HELLO, MIEL PANGILINAN

“It’s definitely weird. Being a kid that grew up in the midst of lockdown and quarantine, there’s a lot of things you expect to experience like when you get to highschool. You go in with a lot of this expectations, but I basically lost years of my life to being in lockdown and being scared for my health and everybody’s health. It’s definitely weird being 18 and even people who didn’t grow up in lockdown can relate where it’s like, “I don’t feel grown up.” A lot of times it can get really overwhelming,” explains Miel Pangilinan who recently came of age. “’Yung ano lang, expectations ng mga tao kasi 18 na ako and I’m older now, I have to go to college, and I have all this plans, but there’s this big chapter of my life that I ended up skipping. Now, I feel like I have such little time na lang to experience that I have to before I graduate.”

Truth be told, Miel Pangilinan feels like she’s chasing time, even though it is a well known scientific fact that the ticking of the hours and days are finite. Does she feel shockingly different having turned 18? Not really, she says. “The first thing I did at 12 AM on my birthday was to cry. It was less of a change within, but more of a change that society expects from you, especially when you’re a girl. Suddenly, there’s all these things you have to be ready for, but you’re not really just yet,” she opens up. “Kasi kapag 18 ka na and babae ka pa, especially in the Philippines, there’s so much expectation to suddenly be your own person but also not be. They want you to have control over what’s happening in your life, but they’re not giving that, does that make sense?”

Patchwork top and utility pants by TOQA TV

It makes complete sense, and if you think about it, women are put through so much pressure with the pageantry of turning 18. (Meanwhile, for men, it’s just another year, carry on.) But being in the public eye, with her parents rooted in politics and show business, Miel Pangilinan has had to endure so much. “The thing that I got after my debut was being serially shamed online. I was being fat-shamed, really aggressively by people online. I didn’t even realize it until much later na, kaka-18 ko lang and ang daming sinasabi. It’s also scary, because there’s a lot more things people can feel they can attack you, just because you’re not legally not a child anymore. As a girl especially, because of the culture in the Philippines, youre ten times more vulnerable. It’s not always like that, but it’s just weird.”

BODY TALK

Scuba top and scarf by TOQA TV, Belly chains by BLACKBOUGH SWIM, Denim midi skirt by ISH BARROZO

If people think being scrutinized over things like weight was already especially mortifying, especially for a child, imagine being twice as hard on yourself over the same thing. “There was a time where I didn’t like how my body looked. It was a big struggle for me to feel comfortable in myself. The way that I would overcompensate was forcing confidence. So, I think deep inside, my inner child will definitely feel a lot better. It definitely is a dream come true for her where she looks the way she does and is not judged for it,” she says of her triumphs such as posting on social media or well, this cover. “You see, when I was 12, there was this recommended video to me on YouTube, ‘yung mga parang gossip tabloid. The title was like, “Miel Pangilinan Mag-diet Ka Na,” and it had all these comments from different people. That was very traumatizing for a kid. It’s still hard to deal with. I went into a spiral and fed things into my brain, which I really didn’t enjoy. They say it comes with the territory and that it will still keep on happening. I obviously can’t help but get hurt, but the thing that I tell myself is I can’t allow what others say about me to affect how I feel about myself. The same goes for my sexuality and things like that. What is it gonna do for me, other than make me feel bad. Yes, it’s inescapable and I get hurt over it, but that’s the extent that I’m going to let the comments do to me. I don’t let it go past a surface level effect on me.”

People, as social creatures, want to fit in, and this is something most would rather not want or care to admit. But for Miel Pangilinan, this notion was a turning point for her, the girl who admits to doing cartwheels and jumping jacks to make her feel wanted. “I was going through a lot of things regarding my body image that I was struggling with. There was a lot going on at the moment concerning my image, my weight, my insecurities, so being put in a new environment, it’s very weird place to be in. The me prior was definitely a lot more insecure,” she says thoughtfully. At this point of the pandemic, Miel Pangilinan has a better sense of self. “I learned to be a lot kinder to myself. I’m also a lot more comfortable in a lot of things concnering myself and I found the right circle of people, I set boundaries, and I am you know, a lot more confident. Obviously, there’s still a lot more I am working on, but being in COVID-19 helped solidify my sexuality. You know, I just knew myself better. Going from there, even there’s still a lot more to work on, knowing myself better than I did before two, three years ago is enough for me to have right now.”

Slowly and surely, Miel Pangilinan is loving herself without any conditions, curves and all. Manifested in TikToks or posts on Instagram of her fashion or makeup, she is confident in being herself, naysayers be damned. In fact, she has built a community on social media where people who relate to her or are going through the same thing in some way, shape, or form get to interact with her. “I can get anxious about being in a public space, but I also thought about this, and got emotional. The thing is, it felt like the little me who was plus-sized who didn’t have that much representation, this was everything she wanted and needed,” she says of her full circle moment service to her inner child. “That’s why it comes to things like that, I’m thinking of what I’m doing, especially for people who will be responding and reacting in the same way. Obviously there’s a lot of stress and pressure that comes with it to sort of be confident, but just me being present and who I am, that’s enough work for me right now as a plus-sized person seeking more body diversity. This way, I am able to help as well.”

THE QUEER UNDERSTANDING

Gecko halter top by TOQA TV, Sequinned skirt by H&M, Pearl necklace by SPACE SKULL PIXIE

While it wasn’t certainly news for those near and dear to Miel Pangilinan, she also publicly came out as queer over the course of the pandemic. “I kind of came out for the first time as pansexual. I was maybe 12 or 13, and I didn’t know much about the term then, but I just knew my attraction wasn’t held to just one gender. What was funny to me was that I was already out to my friends before coming out to my parents. The reason why it wasn’t that much of a big announcement or a big deal was because all the important people in my life who needed had already found out. The only remaining thing left was just to put it out there. It was more of just, by the way,” she says of what was for her a surprising upheaval it caused on the mainstream media. “It didn’t feel right to hold back who I was, at least in the public. It felt right to come out even if I experienced and still continue to experience backlash over it. But I already felt that I had strong enough support from my friends and family, that I’m very thankful for, so I felt comfortable enough already, because these people had my back. It made coming out to the public a safe enough option for me, which I’m genuinely thankful for, because I know that there’s a lot of queer people who don’t experience the same thing.”

Aware of how difficult and for some, life-threatening it is to live out one’s queer truth in a stubbornly conservative country such as the Philippines, Miel Pangilinan is not taking this responsibility thrust into her very lightly. “Definitely there is a lot more pressure,” she says. “You know, coming out as queer, I did it more for myself. And I genuinely didn’t expect it to blow up like it did and to hear from people being like, ‘Miel coming out helped me come out to my parents.’ It was a humbling experience and it really set me in my place in this whole puzzle piece and like, after seeing the reactions, now I obviously know more clearly what I can do as a queer Filipino person. It’s a weight on my shoulders, but it’s one that I don’t mind.”

Patchwork top and utility pants by TOQA TV

With a penchant for the straightforward and rational, a trait she shares with her father and sister, Miel Pangilinan is wise beyond her years when it comes to many things, a facet that is innate to this generation as well. “Similarly to me being a plus-sized person, the best advocacy is to just be yourself and to listen to the people in your community. Look, I’m not the only queer person in the Philippines who is adjacent to show business. I don’t want it to be like that. More than anything, I would be a lot happier if my coming out brought attention to this community of in the country,” she relates. “There’s people who are either proud being themselves or want to be themselves so badly, and there are people advocating for this community, we need these things available to us. In truth, I’m still very new to Filipino queer scene and the Filipino queer community because I only came out publicly recently. So, instead of being seen as an LGBTQIA+ figure head, I hope my coming out helps the rest of the community and gain access to the community. This should be a sign that we need more representation in general media of queer people, because there is so much more to it and just want to be able to be a part of that.”

“The root of most of the problems we face as queer people is the ignorance of others or the unknowing of who weare and the fear that surrounds what people don’t know. It’s just important now more than ever to learn and understand these things, especially in the Philippines where the bakla culture is so integrated into general culture, but we are still persecuted,” Miel Pangilinan says. “People need to understand that we’re here. We’re not just a token character in a teleserye, a myth, or the butt of the joke. We’re very real people with very real feelings. Before anything, our gender identity included, we are all just people in that sense. I hope that me coming out helps others see that it’s not a personality trait to be gay, but it’s the person and who they are. Being queer doesn’t change the person they are.”

THE WORLD AWAITS

While people are hyperfocused on her body or the fact that she doesn’t just like boys, Miel Pangilinan is raring and ready to build not just a name, but a life that is independent from the shadows that has and still continues to drape itself over her. A lot is uncertain in the context of the future for both the young and the older, but what propels her to the veritably unknown is the firm realization that she can be and already is her own person. “It feels euphorically liberating. As I continue to discover more of myself and my identity, it feels a lot more like I’m able to be myself and I’m not performing. It makes me feel more open say going live on TikTok or with my friends. Also, I feel a lot safer in myself knowing who I am and my truth. Here, I am just able to exist,” she says, just as her sister signals her that dinner is ready.

“Growing up in the shadow of other people, having my own space online definitely helps, because I am able to express myself in the way I want to and in the truest sort of form. Most times, I don’t feel like an extension of other people and I’m happy with that,” she says beaming with pride and that same bright smile in the blur of Halloween night. “Being able to be online where I can enjoy these things, and to share that with people who have the same interests, it’s definitely been cathartic for me. The best way for me to really reach people is to be the most myself I can be, because I feel like being disingenuous doesn’t get you anywhere. I really have been happy being able to interact with people online, because there’s less inhibition to really express myself not just in terms of identity as a queer person, but even in the simple things that I enjoy.”

There’s a lot more adventures to navigate, realizations to be made amid emotional upheavals, art to be passionately created, and NCT boys to fawn over, and worlds to conquer for Miel Pangilinan, but in the meantime, dinner awaits.
