One of them is the other half of the beloved KDLex tandem, KD Estrada, and the other one is none other than her mommy Dina. It’s quite a difficult pairing to be honest. Who will win? But first, let’s get to know Alexa better through some of the highlights from her latest vlog that’s equal parts fun, funny, and endearing.

COMPETITIVE MOMMY

Before Alexa Ilacad starts the challenge, it’s obvious that her mommy Dina is not used to being in front of the camera. Alexa even asks for her mother’s fans’ (the Dinanators) support to hype her up. But a couple of questions in, mommy Dina quickly gets the hang of the game, getting the first questions right, and even warning KD Estrada to not cheat at one point. Yes, mommy Dina, go get ’em questions!

CUTE KDLEX MOMENT

At one point, the special pair are asked about the favorite television character that Alexa has played in the past. Mommy Dina quickly gets the right answer, that is Luna, Alexa’s role in the hit TV series The Killer Bride. But KD struggles, mistakenly saying that it’s Marceline the Vampire from the animated show Adventure Time. KD reasons that he thinks the question is about the characters Alexa has transformed into in their past Halloween parties. “Buti na lang cute ka,” is all Alexa can say to KD after that.

LAGOT, KD

Faced with the question about the first thing Alexa Ilacad does in the morning, KD Estrada gets a funny “lagot ka” moment from Alexa’s mom. Mommy Dina gets the answer, but when KD says the same thing, she gets curious. “How do you know,” she asks as the group bursts into laughter. “Because I check my phone to text him!” Alexa replies jokingly. 

Buttercup or Bubbles

Well, it seems that Alexa Ilacad was a big Powerpuff Girls fan as a kid. After Mommy Dina gets the right answer to the question about Alexa’s childhood superhero that is Bubbles, Alexa joyfully throws back to her childhood. She shares that when she was naughty, her mom would call her attention by calling her Buttercup and Bubbles when she’s being a good girl. “But I think growing up I turned into Buttercup,” Alexa says in jest.

CHILDHOOD DREAM

Did you know that at some point in her life, Alexa Ilacad wanted to be a helper? Helping Alexa recall her childhood dream is her mom, as she shares that at primary school, she used to love washing her hanky and baunan at their laundry area. She loved it so much that it became her dream initially as a child, apart from being the commercial model of Pancit Canton.

ANIMAL LOVER

We get another reason to love Alexa Ilacad even more as she shares that the thing she’s most passionate about is helping animal shelters. What is there not to love about Alexa?

SWEET MOMENT

After being in the limelight for a long time, even starring in a reality show for months, it would seem that Alexa Ilacad is an open book. But when KD Estrada and mommy Dina are asked about the thing or trait that people don’t know and should know about Alexa, we are treated with a cute and delightful moment. 

Mommy Dina shares how much of a compassionate and generous person her daughter is who gives help to people she doesn’t even know. Alexa even shares that she randomly helps people on social media platforms like TikTok even sending cash donations online. Meanwhile, KD says that Alexa is very approachable, much to her surprise, and that people, who usually think otherwise, should know that more about her.

It was an epic and victorious night for Pinoy Pop and OPM at the Awit Awards 2022.

As Pinoy Pop continues to be on the rise and be recognized locally and globally, we can all say that Filipino music is at its best over the recent years. And this is on full display at the Philippine Association of the Record Industry’s 35th Awit Awards where P-pop and Original Filipino Music take center stage.

Held at the Newport Performing Arts Theater on November 23 and curated by MYX, this year’s Awit Awards saw a diverse mix of newcomers and established names getting their much-deserved accolades and proving yet again the vibrant music industry that the archipelago nurtures. From SB19 and BGYO to Maymay Entrata and Maris Racal, here are some of the memorable highlights from the triumphant night.

SB19

SB19 proved themselves worthy of the title, Kings of P-pop, as they led the winners’ list with seven Awit Awards trophies. SB19 took home Best Global Recording for their comeback single What? and Most Streamed Artist award. They also won Best Pop Recording and Best Dance Recording for their banger single Bazinga. For their track MAPA, the record-breaking pentad won Best Performance by a Group Recording Artist, Best Vocal Arrangement, and Most Streamed Song.

BGYO

Following the recent release and success of their sophomore album BE:US and their US debut, the five-member BGYO achieved another career milestone as they were voted the Favorite Group Artist at this year’s Awit Awards, a proud moment for their ACEs. P-pop’s breakout boy group was also nominated in the Best Performance by Group Recording Artists category.

ALAMAT

More of P-pop greatness was in full display as the multilingual six-member ALAMAT showed their stunning musicality and moves with a passionate performance of their track Maharani.

The nine-piece band behind the hits like Pagtingin, Araw-Araw, and Leaves, Ben&Ben went home victorious as they bagged five Awit Awards wins. Their second album, Pebble House, Vol. 1: Kuwaderno was hailed as the Best Album of the Year, one of the top awards of the night. For their single Upuan, the folk-pop and pop rock group won the Best Musical Arrangement trophy and the Best Music Video award for Lunod, which was helmed by Jerrold Tarog. Ben&Ben’s collaborative song Sabel with Filipina singer, rapper, and Asia’s Soul Supreme, KZ Tandingan, also won Best World Music Recording and Best Collaboration.

MAYMAY ENTRATA

Our favorite pop diva Maymay Entrata turned the heat up on the stage with a fiery performance of her hit anthem AMAKABOGERA. The actress-singer, MTV EMA nominee, and MPOWERED hitmaker also claimed this year’s Awit Awards Favorite Female Artist award, as she should.

The multi-talented, unproblematic, and breakthrough love team of the year, Alexa Ilacad and KD Estrada, also graced the stage of the Awit Awards as first-time presenters. KDLex, who both looked stunning and were warmly received by the crowd, gave out the trophies for the top awards of the night including Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year.

DARREN ESPANTO

Young and all-around performer Darren Espanto conquered the night as the Favorite Male Artist of the year. The 21-year-old singer behind Pabalik Sa’yo, Tama Na, and Calum Scott’s Heaven took the Awit Awards stage to dedicate his win to his Darrenatics and to his mom and sister who were also at the event.

One-half of the New Gen Phenomenal Love Team, DonBelle, Belle Mariano showed us all the multi-faceted woman that she is after winning two Awit Awards trophies this year. Produced by Star Music, Belle’s debut single Sigurado was voted the Favorite Song while Belle herself was declared as this year’s Breakthrough Artist. With the release of DonBelle’s An Inconvenient Love on the same day, we are truly witnessing Belle Mariano in her winning era.

LEANNE & NAARA

It was also a victorious night for the emerging Filipino indie pop singer-songwriter duo Leanne & Naara. For their vibey track Anticipation that will ultimately make you groove hard, Leanne & Naara nabbed the Best R&B Recording and one of the highest recognition at the Awit Awards, the Record of the Year trophy. Leanne & Naara also got a nomination for Best Performance by Group Recording Artists.

Another up-and-coming, proudly queer voice in the Philippine music industry by the name of Paul Pablo got the spotlight after winning the Best Cover Art award for his dazzling Kalawakan art piece. Make no mistake, apart from the cover art, the music of the Davao-based artist is equally mesmerizing, combining electro-pop, synth-pop, disco, and R&B elements. An LGBTQIA+ advocate, Paul Pablo seeks to raise the rainbow flag in the Filipino music scene ever so proudly.

A mix up with hiring a make-up artist for the event couldn’t stop young multi-hyphenate Maris Racal from shining at the evening with the Best Regional Recording trophy for her single Asa Naman. Co-written and produced by Maris’ beau Rico Blanco, Asa Naman finds Maris going back to her Visayan roots. During the Awit Awards night, Maris thanked her supporters in her native language, specifically expressing her goal to empower her fellow Visayans. 

“We all know that when we write songs, we should write our truth,” said Maris Racal, “and part of my truth is that I’m born in Tagum, Davao. Bisaya akong dako!” She also encourages her fellow regional songwriters to not be afraid of producing music in their native language. “Huwag tayong ma-intimidate na magsulat ng kanta sa first language natin kasi music should be celebrated,” Maris continued. “Kahit anong lingguwahe man ‘yan, tayo’y iindak.”

With the help of Photoshop, Wilfredo Dauis II is turning his family’s old black and white photos into color, and the results are stunning.

It is said that pictures speak a thousand words. The moment forever captured in the photo contains a treasure trove of memories that could fill an entire history book. There’s a story in nearly every photo, whether mundane or personal, especially photos taken decades ago. While these images may often look old, worn out, and lacking color, there is always something there worth exploring.

This is something Wilfredo Dauis II knows all too well. The Batangas State University student is a history buff and understands the importance of preserving those records. And he is doing just that with his family’s old photos. With a little self-taught knowledge courtesy of YouTube and Photoshop, Wilfredo is using his skills to turn decades-old black and white photos into crisp color images.

Now, he has restored photos from his great aunt and great grandparents to name a few. His work on digital photo restoration is bringing these images back to life and renewing the familial history behind them. NYLON Manila recently chatted with the young photo restorer where he shared how he got into the hobby, how his family feels about his work, and much more.

How did you get into restoring old photos? 

Actually, family history talaga ang interest ko. One time, after ng isang malakas na bagyo, naglilinis kami ng lumang bahay ng mga lola ko and nakita ko ‘yung mga lumang album nila na naglalaman ng pictures as early as 1910’s. Unfortunately, marami ang nabasa at talagang nanlumo ako. ‘Yung mga kaya pang i-save, talagang sinave at ini-scan ko, then naisipan kong i-restore ‘yung mga scratches lang at ‘yun, nagtuloy-tuloy na hanggang sa pinag-aralan ko na din ang pagkukulay.

Could you describe the process of how you restore old photos?

First, tinatanggal ko muna ‘yung dust sa pictures by using cotton and alcohol, then inii-scan ko siya ng mataas ang resolution. Kapag may damage tulad ng punit or nabasa, nililinis ko muna siya by using different tools sa Photoshop. Inaaral ko rin kung anong taon kinuhanan ang larawan para at least alam ko ang paleta ng kulay na gagamitin ko. Sa pagkukulay naman, inuuna ko ang pagkukulay ng skin, sunod ay ang mga details ng mukha tulad ng labi, kilay mata or kung may make up, nilalagyan ko rin. After ko makulayan, kino-color grade or tinitimpla ko ang bawat picture para mas ma-attain ko talaga ‘yung value ng mga kulay sa isang picture.

 How did you learn how to restore old photos?

Natuto ako magkulay by watching tutorials from YouTube. Fortunately, meron din kaming classes noong highschool na related sa pag-e-edit kaya medyo napag-aralan ko ang pagrerestore at pagkukulay. Mayroon din akong mga kaibigan na napapagtanungan ko ng iba’t-ibang techniques kung papano mag-restore at color ng isang lumang larawan.

 How do you pick which photos to restore?

Depende sa story ng picture ang pagpili ko, if medyo interesting ‘yung picture kinukulayan ko siya after i-restore. Minsan may mga pictures akong nire-restore na nireretain ko lang yung pagka-sepia niya dahil sa tingin ko, mas mape-preserve ‘yung memory niya if mananatili siyang sepia.

 What’s your most and least favorite part of the restoration process?

My most favorite part is ‘yung pagkukulay ng skintone, dahil sa process na ito parang biglang nabubuhay ko agad ang isang larawan. My least favorite part naman ay ang pagre-reconstruct ng mga damaged parts ng isang picture.

How does your family feel about you restoring their old photos into color?

Natutuwa sila, lalo na ang mga lolo at lola…parang nanariwa sa kanila ‘yung mga panahon noong kinuhanan ang mga larawang ni-restore ko. Minsan, nagre-request talaga sila ng mga pictures na ipapa-restore nila at katulong ko rin sila sa pagre-restore, sila ‘yung nagsasabi ng mga kulay ng damit, or ibang details sa larawan. 

Has your digital photo restoration changed and affected the way you see your family? 

Mas nagkaroon ako ng mas malalim na koneksyon sa aking pamilya lalo na sa aking mga ancestors. Kumbaga, mas napalapit ako sa kanila at sa kanilang mga istorya after restoring their photos. 

Your work has gone viral on social media. How do you feel about all the love and attention it’s been getting?

Nakakatuwa, na madaming nakaka-appreciate sa sining na ito. Parang na-inspire lalo ako na bigyang kulay at buhay ang mga larawang kupas upang mas ma-appreciate nila lalo ang buhay noong nakaraang panahon.

Out of all the things you could have done, why photo restoration? 

Old photos are one of the most neglected treasure of a family. Napili kong pagyamanin ang sining na ito dahil bibihira lamang ang nagkakainteres sa pangangalaga ng mga lumang larawan at sa aking sariling pamamaraan, naiibahagi ko ang kahalagahan ng pagsasa-ayos ng mga lumang larawan.

What’s one thing about old photo restoration you wish more people knew?

Ang layunin ng Photo Restoration ay hindi lamang maisaayos ang bawat larawan kundi ang mapreserve ang ala-ala ng kahapon at nang sa gayon, mayroon tayong ala-alang maipakita sa susunod na henerasyon. Sana mabatid rin ng mga tao or ng mga family nila na ang pagtatago sa mga larawan ng mga nakaraan ay isang pagsisinop ng yaman.

The UAAP is home to many rising sports stars, and one that has been gaining a lot of attention as of late is UP Fighting Maroons’ James Spencer.

We’re currently approaching the tail end of season 85 of the UAAP’s men’s basketball tournament, and it’s been a ride. After UP made history in season 84 by ending Ateneo’s winning streak and taking home the championship, the UP Fighting Maroons are hoping to get that back-to-back win. And given their performance so far, they might just do that given how they have the most wins out of any team, so far. Helping UP reach this once-unprecedented goal is a team of strong players, and one player who has been making quite a bit of noise this season is James Spencer.

This isn’t the Filipino-Australian’s first time on the UAAP court, but as of late, he has been making many fans thanks to his impressive b-ball skills and charming looks.

In fact, season 85 brought James the best game of his career so far. During UP’s match against FEU, James scored a career-high of 19 points, three rebounds, and one steal. All that and more helped contribute to what would become UP’s 10th win of the season. What made the impressive feat even better was that James’ mom was in the audience during the game.

A’TIN were quick to express their admiration for the group’s enthralling presentation online, obviously dazzled by their idols’ performance, and rightfully so. One fan noticed Pablo’s impressive ad lib in their fresh take of MAPA, effortlessly hitting those high notes with his soaring voice that always complements the group’s harmony. SB19 CONTINUES TO MAKE A’TIN PROUD

The release of the Wish USA bus performance comes at an opportune moment as SB19 recently won seven accolades from Awit Awards 2022. Three of these, including the Best Performance by a Group Recording Artist, Best Vocal Arrangement, and Most Streamed Song awards, are all for their track MAPA. Those seven trophies got the boys yet another mention in the history books as they became the artist with the most wins at one night at the Awit Awards.

Not only that, the group continue to prove their undeniable impact as their comeback single WYAT (Where You At) debuted at Billboard Hot Trending Songs’ Weekly Chart on the number 17 spot, after debuting at the same spot on the daily trend chart. WYAT is also nominated for the Wish Pop Song of the Year award at the eighth Wish Music Awards with SB19 also getting a nod for the Wish Group of the Year category.

As the New Gen Phenomenal Love Team, we’ve expected nothing short of a special entrance for DonBelle. And that’s exactly what happened as they arrived in a luxury car. Donny Pangilinan, being the gentleman that he is, escorted a stunning Belle Mariano out of the car. Both looking dreamy together, DonBelle was welcomed by their passionate fans as they entered the mall joined by their co-stars.

Look at our Belinda and Donato at their brightest and sweetest, casually holding hands as they’re about to prove yet again their immense impact as a love team and make their supporters proud. In another video, Donny can be seen surprising Belle with a bouquet of flowers and a forehead kiss, much to the kilig-filled screams of their fans. Another netizen even made a then-and-now collage, which showed Donny and Belle at the same red carpet two years ago for another movie where they went separate and fast forward to now, where the two are finally together and both the stars of the evening.

Also present to give their all-out support were DonBelle’s famous friends including the star TikToker and their Love Is Color Blind co-star Esnyr Ranollo. Jake Ejercito and Gab Valenciano were also at the premiere with the latter praising An Inconvenient Love as a “perfect balance of fun and depth, young love and family.” Belle’s Rise family was also in attendance. Kapamilya artists Melai Cantiveros, Robi Domingo, and Darren Espanto also graced the event where they expressed their pride for DonBelle. Star athlete Alyssa Valdez was also at the screening describing the movie as having an “awesome cinematography, excellent script, and amazing artists.”

FAMILY

Of course, DonBelle’s biggest fans, their families, were also at the premiere to cheer them on. Belle’s parents and her younger sister attended while the entire Pangilinan family was present, undeniably beaming with pride.

The premiere of An Inconvenient Love proved to be an overwhelming success for Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano who were understandably overcome with emotions. In an Instagram story by Jake Ejercito, DonBelle embraced each other tightly with tears as the audience gave them a warm applause for their much-deserved feat. In another video, Belle was hugged by Donny’s sisters Ella, Hannah, and Solana just oozing with pride and joy.

And yes, the premiere of An Inconvenient Love was a success. And if you want to complete the fantasy, you can do your viewing session while wearing a holiday sweater.

Inflation has hit all of us quite hard this 2022 and had us tightening our belts. This is why you and your budget should use this moment to plan who is getting a gift this Christmas. Niana Guerrero’s latest W in life is also historic with her inclusion in TikTok’s second annual Discover List.

Most 16-year-olds worry about school, homework, and puberty. But Niana Guerrero operates on a different plane. While she probably does worry about all that too, that is on top of having a career bigger than most people twice and thrice her age. At her age, Niana is considered an icon of Philippine social media with her viral dance trends, fun vlogs, and lovable personality garnering her tens of millions of fans across her platforms.

Not many teenagers can brag that they have over 35 million followers on TikTok. And following a slew of recent successes like performances at BaiCon InFest 2022 in Cebu and YouTube Fanfest 2022 in Singapore, Niana Guerrero recently got her latest win, a historic inclusion in TikTok’s Discover List.

ONLY FILIPINO ON THE LIST

In case you didn’t know, TikTok’s Discover List is their annual collection of 50 creators from around the world who are bringing a positive impact to the platform. 2021 was the first edition of the list, and this year saw the second edition expanded to be their first global listing. The creators are split into five categories: Changemakers, Icons, Innovators, Foodies, and Originators. Among the thousands of creators, TikTok only included one Filipino on the list, and that was none other than Niana Guerrero. The superstar dancer was included in the Originators category.

“The creators we love who create the trends we live for. The creators who’ve started viral dances, sounds, aesthetics, and more, and the creators who are the culture. Originators know what makes the community tick and they continue to make content that is ironically #ForYou,” reads the description of the category. Given how Niana Guerrero has a penchant to start viral dance trends or become closely associated with them, it was an apt inclusion. Not only is Niana the only Filipino on the entire list, but she also makes history as the first-ever Pinoy to be included on the Discover list. Talented, charismatic, and a history maker, we love to see it.

TIKTOK QUEEN NIANA GUERRERO

In her official profile for the list, TikTok had nothing but praise for the impact of the young star. “The 16-year-old ‘girl next door’ has been making an impact worldwide by going out of her comfort zone and boldly sharing her passion for music and laughter. With her incredible knack for dance, fantastic sense, and humor, Niana continues to touch the hearts of many across the globe.”

As for Niana Guerrero, she credits the virality of her dances with making them as easy as possible for people to jump in. “[TikTok] helps me express myself creatively. For every dance trend I create, I make sure the songs that I use are catchy and relatable to people,” she told the platform for the profile. Not only is Niana out here repping her skills that have earned her recognition around the world, but also showcasing the talents of Filipinos.
