All The Times Marian Rivera Effortlessly Broke The Internet

line
She has the secret recipe down.

Content creators are lucky Marian Rivera didn’t decide to quit her job.

Related: Here’s Why Marian Rivera’s New Movie, Balota, Is More Important Than You Think

Marian Rivera is a lot of things, and having the ability to capture the pulse of the pop culture zeitgeist is one of them. Whether intentionally or not, Marian naturally knows how to give those moments that are destined to go viral on social media, and we love her even more for that. If she isn’t leading movies and teleseryes, she’s providing social media with viral-worthy content that many content creators can only dream of. Who’s doing it like her? Check out some of Marian Rivera’s most iconic moments that had netizens in a chokehold.

HER TIKTOK VIDEO THAT TOOK OVER THE FYP

@marianrivera Try lang 😝 #MarianRivera #FYP ♬ original sound – MarianRivera – Marian Rivera

The definition of “You just had to be there”. Among Marian’s many viral TikTok videos, this one stands tallest, and for good reason. In her simple yet chic OOTD, Marian took over millions of FYPs as she danced to Jessie J’s Price Tag. How viral did it go? As of this writing, the video has a jaw-dropping 200 million views and 14.9 million likes.

HER LEGENDARY PRANK ON IVANA ALAWI

Marian had a role to play, and she did it flawlessly. In a video on Ivana Alawai’s YouTube channel, she and Marian were supposed to have a crab mukbang while answering. Things went sideways quickly though as Marian activated her inner mataray that would have anyone frozen in place. It got so bad that Ivana was reduced to tears by the end. But it turns out that it was just an epic prank pulled on Ivana by her sister with the A-list actress as her accomplice. The way everything came together, especially on Marian’s part, was just *chef’s kiss*.

HER ENGLISH Q&A TRANSLATION

We love a multi-hyphenate queen. Marian was one of the judges at the Century Tuna Superbods 2024 competition. During the Q&A portion of the fitness event, she read out a question in Tagalog to contestant Jether Palomo, who won the competition. When he asked for an English translation, Marian gamely translated it into English herself, which was half serious, half dogshow. After translating, Marian said, “I think you understand that,” to applause and laughs from the audience and netizens.

THE INTERNET’S NEW FAVORITE REACTION VIDEO

TBH, some of the best viral content are the ones that aren’t intentional. Case in point: this moment during Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes’ interview with Ogie Diaz. When Ogie commented that people didn’t want to be near Dingdong because of the attitude people assume Marian to have, she responded, “Mabuti naman,” did a shocked gasp, and then IJBOLed with Ogie. Thus, a new reaction video for Pinoy Twitter was born.

RECREATING HER ICONIC MARIMAR LOOK

You know Marian Rivera can slay a throwback, as seen with her doing the dance challenge to her song Sabay Sabay Tayo. So, for her take on the Asoka challenge, she gave netizens what they wanted and used the makeup challenge to transform into her character from the 2007 hit teleserye Marimar, and all set to the tune of the series intro.

BONUS: AI MARIAN

If you’re somewhat chronically online, you’ve probably seen this viral and lowkey hilarious video of Marian’s interview being seamlessly translated from Tagalog to English, French, and then Japanese via an AI video translate app. While the actress didn’t speak different languages during that interview, what’s stopping her from learning how to do so? She can already speak a little French.

INTERNATIONAL CELEBS CRUSH LOCAL STARS

These International Celebs Have Been Rizzed By Filipino Stars

When it's right, it's right.

The worldwide rizz is real. These Filipino stars can count on these international celebs as one of their admirers, and we don’t blame them.

Do you ever wonder if celebrities lurk on social media and lowkey stalk people they find interesting online? It might be hard to imagine your fave celeb coming across your profile and even taking a liking to you, but it can happen, as these following local stars can attest. Not only have they amassed legions of admirers locally, but they’ve also charmed their fair share of international stars. Honestly, we wouldn’t be surprised if they admitted to having a crush on these local celebs. Here’s a list of international celebs who have been smitten by Filipino stars.

MULTIPLE STARS WITH LIZA SOBERANO

Liza Soberano has charmed so many international stars that it could be its own list (which we did here). But just to name a few: Thai actor Luke Plowden told Liza on X that they look alike, The Vamps’ James Mcvey posted selfies with her, and Justin Bieber followed Liza on X. She has that international rizz.

BELLA POARCH WITH JUSTIN DE DIOS AND JOSHUA GARCIA

@sbnineteenzone nag-react pala si Bella dun sa interview ni Jah hahahaha. thank you raw for existing Jah. I mean, same #sb19 #sb19_justin #justin #bellapoarch ♬ surreal – justin

Bella Poarch has made it no secret of her love for Filipino celebrities. But if fans say, “pumila ka”, Bella is firmly at the front of the line when it comes to her crushes on SB19’s Justin de Dios and actor Joshua Garcia. From Bella exchanging comments on social media with Joshua to reacting to Justin talking about her crush on him, Bella is living the Y/N fantasy.

JUSTIN BIEBER WITH ANNE CURTIS

ANNE CURTIS

Anne Curtis has a long list of fanboys, but her interaction with one of the biggest pop stars in the world might take the cake. When Justin Bieber was in the Philippines, he reportedly asked for Anne’s number, NBD. And in a pretty boss move, Anne declined to give it to him. Ok queen, we see you with the rejection.

PARK MIN KYU WITH NADINE LUSTRE

Have you ever had that feeling of meeting someone you don’t know but already taking a liking to them just because of how beautiful they are? That’s the feeling Singles Inferno 3 contestant Park Min Kyu probably felt when he saw Nadine Lustre at a Bulgari event in South Korea. Nadine’s aura was so attractive that he had no choice but to post a video of him posing alongside the actress on Instagram with the caption “she was really beautiful”.

BRETMAN ROCK WITH PIOLO PASCUAL AND DEREK RAMSAY

Just like you, Bretman Rock has their childhood crushes on Filipino actors. But unlike you, Bretman actually got personal messages from them. The last time the multi-hyphenate baddie was in the Philippines, they received a special treat when Derek Ramsay and Piolo Pascual sent Bretman private video greetings, much to their glee. Bretman stays winning, fr.

HAM SUNG-MIN WITH FRANCINE DIAZ

From sliding into the DMs to going overseas to meet in person, we love to see it. Francine’s interactions with Korean actor Ham Sung-Min began when she DMed him on Instagram following the success of All Of Us Are Dead. The two exchanged messages, with the actor even following Francine on IG. Then, months after their initial encounter, they finally met in person when Francine was in Korea and had a meal together.

ICYDK, You Can Visit These IRL Locations That Were Used As BINI Music Video Sets

line
Anyone up for a roadtrip?

If a BINI-coded travel itinerary sounds interesting, you may want to start in the real-life locations where the group shot some of their videos.

Related: 8 Ways BINI Took Us To Another World At Their 3-Day BINIverse Concert Weekend

There’s just something so magical about a BINI music video. From the outfits, direction, production, and more, their MVs fulfill the BINI fantasy that we’ve come to know from the group. When you watch one of their videos, you also want to be part of that world because it feels like nothing goes wrong there. But actually, there’s no imagining here.

While they’ve used built sets and green screens in their music videos on occasion, the group has also shot a few of their videos in real-life locations that you can visit. It’s like those tours in Korea where you visit spots featured in K-pop music videos but in the Philippines. So, scroll down for a few actual locations featured in BINI’s music videos that are open to the public.

LAGI – THE DESSERT MUSEUM

In the music video to BINI’s bubblegum-coded OPM love song, the girls are smitten by a teddy bear man in a candy land. That wasn’t CG though, but an actual location you probably have heard of called The Dessert Museum. The MV takes place pretty much throughout the entire attraction and shows off what you can expect there (minus the cute guy). It’s an entire museum of rainbow sweetness, and, well, dessert that will be right at home on your IG feed.

The Dessert Museum is located at Level 1, S Maison Mall, Mall of Asia Complex, Coral Way, Pasay City

CHERRY ON TOP – POTEFINO RESIDENCE

We don’t blame you if you thought that BINI shot the Cherry On Top music video abroad. But those Neo-Victorian townhouses you see in the video can actually be found right here in the Philippines, Batangas to be specific. A portion of Cherry On Top’s MV and some of the concept photos were shot at Potefino Residence in Batangas City. This townhouse development is known for its eye-catching units and vintage aesthetic design. Do note though that this is a private residence, so unless you’re there to house hunt, remember to keep it respectful.

PANTROPIKO – INFLATABLE ISLAND BEACH CLUB

If you want to feel the Pantropiko fantasy, just head north to Zambales. For the viral smash’s performance video and concept photos, BINI shot those at the Inflatable Island Beach Club. This massive beach resort with its claim to fame, giant inflatable attractions and courses on the water, is a fun summer playground. But if chilling by the beach to enjoy the sun, getting some drinks, and snacking on a nice meal or two is your MO, Inflatable Island has got you covered on that as well.

Inflatable Island Beach Club is located at R7W9+M57, Olongapo – Bugallon Rd, Olongapo, 2200 Zambales

I FEEL GOOD PERFORMANCE VIDEO – THE FUN ROOF POBLACION

For the group’s BreakTudo Awards 2023 performance video, the girls performed I Feel Good around a rooftop filled with colorful games, fitting for the song they were doing. ICYDK, that roof was The Fun Roof in Poblacion. This rooftop bar doesn’t skimp on the fun with its neon lights that pop and welcome you to an adult’s version of an arcade. Aside from the typical bar chow and drinks, The Fun Roof has a variety of games and activities to try out, from basketball, curling, bowling, pinball, mini-golf, and more.

The Fun Roof is located at 4/F Matheus Building, 5382 General Luna, Poblacion, Makati.

GOLDEN ARROW – SACOBIA BRIDGE

This one is for the OG BLOOMS. Featured in the Golden Arrow music video, performance video, and on the backdrop of the group’s first album, Born To Win, is the Sacobia Bridge in Mabalacat, Pampanga. It’s a steel bridge that crosses the Sacobia River and measures 894 meters long and 29.5 meters wide, with a total of six car lanes and two bike lanes and sidewalks.

Its most memorable feature though is its unique design and orange arches (which are meant to form a star when viewed from the right angle). Next time you find yourself in Pampanga, you may want to visit it, though maybe not stop in the middle of the road to do a shoot.

What You Need To Know About Samantha Catantan, The First Filipino Fencer At The Olympics Since 1992

line
En garde! 🤺

Samantha Catantan is the first fencer to compete for the Philippines at the Olympics since 1992. Here’s all you need to know about the Gen Z athlete headed off to Paris 2024.

Related: Here Are All The Filipino Athletes Competing At The 2024 Paris Olympics

Samantha Catantan, Philippines-born and raised, is a Filipino fencer making the nation proud. The 22-year old is one of the Filipino athletes currently in France preparing for the biggest sporting event of their careers thus far. Debuting on the Paris 2024 Olympic stage, she’s the only Filipino to compete in fencing in this year’s Games—and the first in 32 years. But who is this young fencer making a name for herself in the international fencing world?

The 2024 Olympic Games commences July 26, with sports events running until August 11. After crossing oceans for years to train, represent, compete, and learn, Samantha’s embarking on the biggest, most difficult challenge of her fencing journey yet. She’s competed in tournaments and represented the Philippines before, but making it to the Olympics is a major milestone that could end with even more Ws under her belt. Wish Samantha luck, and get to know the young fencer below before the referee calls en garde.

SHE’S A RIGHT-HANDED FOIL FENCER

Stock up on your fencing knowledge so you can keep up with Sam at the Olympics. Fencing is one of the oldest sports in the Olympics, having been an official Game since the first Modern Games in 1896. Foil is one of the three disciplines of fencing named after the respective blades used in each one. There’s foil, épée, and the sabre, with foil being the most commonly used.

Samantha is a right-handed foil fencer, and will be competing in the women’s foil event at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on July 28, after qualifying at the 2024 Asia and Oceania Zonal Qualifying Tournament.

A FENCER OF FIRSTS

The Philippines hasn’t sent in a fencer to represent the country at the Olympics since 1992—our first and last entry to the Games was Walter Torres. Samantha is the first fencer since then to make it to the Games, and the first Filipino woman to qualify and enter. The Olympics haven’t even started, but she’s already making history. She did that!

SHE’S BEEN REPRESENTING THE PH SINCE SHE WAS 14

Samantha has been training since she was young, and has been a member of the Philippine National Fencing Team since she was 14. At 15, she made her representative debut at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, where she won the silver medal. She went on to go to the University of the East and train as part of the high school junior fencing team, competing in the UAAP and earning an MVP title. Samantha also won the gold medal at the 2021 SEA Games, making her a decorated fencer heading into this year’s Olympics.

SHE WAS TRAINED RIGHT HERE IN THE PHILIPPINES

The homegrown Samantha is a fencer from the Quezon City Sports Enhancement Program, a grassroots sports program that opened opportunities for her to compete in tournaments and get scholarships, too. She first started training when she was nine years old, and she’s even returned to the program to hold clinics and inspire other young athletes to pursue fencing.

Samantha also trained with fellow fencer Maxine Esteban, who now competes under the flag of the Ivory Coast after issues with the Philippine Fencing Association. Despite competing for themselves and for different nations, she’s more than excited to see her former teammate at the Summer Olympics. Fencing excellence.

SHE’S PURSUING A MASTER’S DEGREE ABROAD

After graduating from the University of the East and leading her team to multiple victories, Samantha got an offer to fence in the professional college scene from the Pennsylvania State University. She’s majoring in Accounting with a minor in Legal Environment of Business. From her freshman season up until now (she’s currently Women’s Team Captain of the Penn State Fencing Team), she’s trained and won several competitions, scoring victories and honors left and right, all while earning her master’s degree (and a minor, too, at that)!

SHE’S AS DETERMINED AS THEY COME

During her qualifying performance at the 2024 Asia and Oceania Zonal Qualifying Tournament in the UAE earlier this year, Samantha incurred a red-card penalty. She also injured her knee from a lunge—the same knee that she hurt at the Southeast Asian Games last year. Despite it all, the fencer powered through, cinching a win that ensured she would be on a plane to Paris 2024 soon, proud and ready to make her Olympic debut.

Why Underconsumption Core Is The Next Trend That Should Be On Your Radar

line
Take this as a sign to live less.

Underconsumption core is all over our FYPs; here’s why it’s important.

Another morning, another scroll through tempting online storefronts, where each click bookmarks must-haves and ~life-changing~ finds. But pause for a moment—have you caught wind of the underconsumption core?

Imagine scrolling through TikTok, where every swipe is now nothing but sales talk or a lowkey ad for TikTok shop. It’s in moments like these that the underconsumption core comes into focus. For starters, it serves as an antidote to our fixation on fast fashion and the perpetual cycle of upgrades.

Let’s unpack why the underconsumption core is the next trend that should be on your radar.

Underconsumption Core is Trending on Tiktok

@jalyne.santos this is all true but i just keep buying things that i don’t need 🤠 #overconsumption #underconsumption #comsumerism #shoppingaddict ♬ original sound – speedz!

Underconsumption core isn’t just about building better spending habits—it’s a stance against the constant chase for the next big thing and the mindless shopping sprees fueled by capitalist culture.

This movement, rather than a trend, urges us to truly reconsider our purchasing behavior. Think upcycling projects, sustainable staples, and squeezing every last drop from what you already own, redefining what it means to live less.

@sophie_hinn I could make a series out of this 😂 #underconsumption ♬ Don't Know Why – Norah Jones

It’s taking TikTok by storm as users proudly post their nearly empty essentials, score sustainable fashion finds from their closets, and showcase how to style one outfit in a dozen ways. They’re breathing new life into old belongings, reintroducing forgotten favorites into their daily routines.

Why It’s Important

@lara.joy.s underconsumption core is my fav thing on this app ✨️🫶😭 #underconsumption #deinfluencing ♬ original sound – LaraJoy

In a culture that glorifies excess and instant gratification, underconsumption core offers a counterpoint—it champions sustainability and mindfulness in everyday living. It’s like opting for that sturdy backpack that’ll last through adventures instead of purchasing fleeting, aesthetically pleasing ones that fall apart after a few trips. Or, in a more controversial take, owning just one water bottle.

When Instagram influencers, fast fashion, and advertisements feed our desire for the latest trends at lightning speed, underconsumption core becomes more important than ever. It’s time to recognize that our addiction to these fixes isn’t just about being trendy anymore—it’s about having what everyone else has without regard for its impact on society and the environment.

@shaywerahiko working on having less – this trend is 👌 #underconsumption #core #underconsumptioncore ♬ Don't Know Why – Norah Jones

Embracing underconsumption core challenges this status quo by advocating for a more mindful approach to consumption. It’s a reminder that not having the latest celebrity-endorsed product doesn’t mean you’re out of touch or broke—it simply means you can start setting beauty, fashion, and lifestyle trends with more sustainable choices.

How to Live Less

@frontporchthreads A trend i can get behind!! Want me to do other rooms or my closet next? #underconsumptioncore #underconsumption #diy #upcycling #fbmarketplace ♬ Norah Jones-style piano jazz pops – C_O

Sure, that limited edition summer launch or those irresistible lipstick combos are calling your name. But before you splurge, consider investing in timeless pieces that stand the test of time. Underconsumption core isn’t about deprivation; it’s about making smart choices that align with your style while having a positive impact.

Instead of always chasing new items, try mixing and matching your pieces in unexpected ways to create new looks. If you’re moving out, use Pinterest moodboards to get ideas on how to decorate your space with unique second-hand finds. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also make a sustainable statement. And if you really can’t help but buy one more thing because you ~deserve~ it, invest in a well-made piece that will last longer.

@s.lin30 but hey atleast theyre clean #deinfluencing #deinfluencingmakeup #underconsumption #hitpan #makeup ♬ Sobbing why is this viral – sam

Underconsumption core isn’t just a passing trend—it’s a lifestyle. It empowers us to redefine success by the meaning and intention behind our purchases. It’s a call to action for a more mindful, impactful way of living—one that prioritizes purpose over impulse. Imagine a future where thoughtful consumption is the new norm.

5 Times Filipino-Canadian Gen Z Olympic Swimmer Kayla Sanchez Blew Us Out Of The Water

line
🏊🏻‍♀️🏅🇵🇭

Time to start getting to know our athletes headed off to the Olympics, starting with two-time Olympic medalist and swimmer Kayla Sanchez.

Related: Here Are All The Filipino Athletes Competing At The 2024 Paris Olympics

If you were tuned into the 2024 Olympics, you’d find the story of a Filipino-Canadian swimmer switching her athletic allegiance to represent the Philippines in the Olympics a familiar one. If you weren’t, then let us tell you about 23-year old Kayla Sanchez.

Born to OFW parents in Singapore, Kayla and her family moved to Canada when she was young. She started her swimming career there, and has become a pride of the nation after bagging multiple accolades and medals, including not one, but two Olympic medals.

Though based in Ontario, in 2022, Kayla made the switch from working with Canada for her professional swim career, and is now headed to the Olympics to compete in the women’s 100m freestyle, the only woman and one of only two Filipino swimmers to compete in the event. Before the Games begin, get to know more about Kayla below.

WHEN SHE WON TWO OLYMPIC MEDALS, NBD

At 23, Kayla’s already earned her fair share of accolades, winning two medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for relay swimming in her first foray into the Games. Along with her teammates Maggie Mac Neil, Rebecca Smith, and Penny Oleksiak, Kayla won the silver medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay, Canada’s first medal that year.

That’s not all—with Maggie, Penny, Kylie Mass, Taylor Ruck, and Sydney Pickrem, the Canadian team also secured a bronze medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay, making Kayla a two-time Olympic medalist. Iconic.

WHEN SHE STARTED COMPETING AT 16

Kayla made her competitive swimming debut in a major international competition in 2017, at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships—and yes, of course she placed. Twice. She earned a silver medal in the 200-meter individual medley, a bronze in the 100-meter freestyle, and with her teammates Penny Oleksiak, Rebecca Smith, Jade Hannah, Faith Nelson, and Taylor Ruck, swept the team relays. She was a force to look out for immediately, that’s for sure.

WHEN SHE EARNED ALL HER OTHER ACCOLADES

With all the weight of her medals around her neck, it’s a wonder Kayla can still swim as quick and graceful as she does. Besides her Olympic achievements, the swimmer has accolades in the FINA World Junior Championships, FINA World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and the Pan Pacific Championships.

GETTING THAT DEGREE

Besides being an Olympian, Kayla’s also a student at the University of British Columbia, taking up political science while also being part of the school’s Thunderbirds swimming team. We love a versatile, educated athlete.

CHOOSING THE PHILIPPINES

Having competed for Canada in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as well as in all previous relay and freestyle competitions, Kayla now swims under the Philippine flag. She made the switch in 2022 for personal and family reasons, and has made it known that she wants to inspire more of her people to get into swimming as a sport and career.

In a statement from competitive swimming governing body Swimming Canada, Kayla said, “I’ve always been really proud of my Filipino heritage. Aside from how much I’ve grown and how good everything has been in Canada, I needed to make this really difficult decision for myself and my family to take this opportunity to represent the Philippines. I want to help inspire people that are like me to swim and get into the sport.”

FALLEN IDOLS RICO YAN GRAVE

FYI, There Are Better (And More Ethical) Ways To Support Your Fallen Idol

line
It's all about boundaries.

There’s a fine line between admiration and disrespect.

Related: PSA: Respect Your Idols’ Privacy & Personal Time And Space—They’re People, Too

People love their idols. With the way the entertainment industry works, many people end up developing a bond with their favorite stars that is often based on admiration for their personality and their work. And guess what? That’s ok. It’s fine for people to have a favorite star, develop a crush for a new personality, or have an idol they bias. But what happens when our favorite idol passes away? How do you celebrate a public figure who is no longer with us? Well, it starts by not turning their resting place or sacred spaces into some sort of tourist spot. Just look at what’s happening to Rico Yan.

LET THEM REST IN PEACE

Among the many stars that dot the Philippine showbiz industry, few shine as bright as Rico Yan. The matinee idol was the talk of the town from the late 90s to the early 2000s with a face card that was the definition of the boy next door and acting talent to match the hype. Most of his roles, especially when paired with Claudine Barretto, were the stuff of legend. His filmography, which includes classics such as Got 2 Believe, Gimik, Mula sa Puso, FLAMES: The Movie, and Dahil Mahal na Mahal Kita, endeared him to generations, which made his unexpected passing in March 2002 that much more shocking.

Rico Yan has that timeless charm, which is no wonder Gen Z has discovered a newfound love for the actor as of late. He’s been going viral on social media, especially on TikTok, as his scenes and kilig-inducing dialogue make the rounds online.

@absstarcinema Balikan na ba? 😊 Relapse malala muna sa sinehan this August 14 sa #UnHappyForYou! ❤️‍🩹 @JOSHUA GARCIA @Julia Barretto #JoshuaGarcia #JuliaBarretto #PetersenVargas #NewMovie #movies ♬ wag mo silang pansinin – ★

While it’s heartwarming to see Rico Yan have a new look from the new generation, it seems to have inspired a questionable trend of people visiting his grave, with videos of people filming themselves at his grave going viral, often for the wrong reason. It isn’t inherently wrong to visit the final resting place of a dead celebrity as you may want to pay respects, but it is wrong to turn that visit into some sort of clout expedition.

RESPECT YOUR IDOLS, EVEN IF THEY ARE NO LONGER HERE

It goes without saying that graves of stars who are no longer with us are not tourist spots that you visit like you’re on a sightseeing tour. That kind of clout chasing is straight disrespect. While they were public figures, there’s a certain kind of decorum to be practiced when near these solemn spaces. In the same way that living celebrities deserve their space and privacy, so too should that be afforded to stars long gone.

Supporting your fallen idol can come through simply consuming their work, remembering what made them great, and, like what is happening with Rico Yan, introducing them to new audiences. Support them as if you’d support them if they were still alive. Enjoy what body of work they left in this world, talk about their talent, and celebrate what made them special. More importantly, honoring their memory also includes respecting boundaries.

Yes, it’s sad that the people we look up to are no longer with us. But going to private locations that are associated with the celebrity? That’s not the vibe, bestie. This isn’t a spiritual journey. The parasocial relationships that can form in this industry might make us think that we can cross those lines. But we can’t and shouldn’t. These people deserve to rest in peace, and that’s the least we can do to respect their legacy. And if a visit to their grave is something you really want to do, then do so with the right intentions.

Gen Z Is Inspirational, As Imran Amed Says—But There’s A Catch

What's going on in fashion?

What direction is Gen Z taking with fashion in terms of waste, affordability, and sustainability? The Business of Fashion CEO Imran Amed shares his thoughts.

Gen Z is often associated with being drivers of change, and one thing people don’t really talk about is how that change can go in different directions—some good, some bad. Such is the case with the youth’s take on fashion, style, and consumption. Though we’re not the only market out there, Gen Z is an undeniable force that’s changing everything from marketing practices to business strategies. Known to be a generation aligned with values of justice, sustainability, and environmental consciousness, Gen Z has influenced shifts and changes in trends, business practices, and more.

“Some of the strongest and most inspiring voices we have in our industry are Gen Z voices,” Imran Amed says. Seeing these shifts and changes firsthand is none other than The Business of Fashion founder, CEO, and editor-in-chief Imran Amed, who turned a little fashion blog into one of the biggest platforms of fashion today. Imrad Amed was a special guest at Vogue Philippines’ 7th Vogue Talks event, sharing his knowledge and expertise with over a thousand attendees.

Held at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater at Circuit Makati, Vogue Talks with Imran Amed delved into the founder and CEO’s multicultural background, The Business of Fashion, and the state of fashion as it exists in the context of our modern world and the Philippines. From best practices to artificial intelligence, Taylor Swift to Indian craftsmanship, Imran and Vogue editors delved into different discussions about culture, fashion, personal growth, and business.

SHIFTING CONVERSATIONS

For Imran, the consumers of today, especially after the brunt of the pandemic, are generally more discerning about what they buy and wear. They’re questioning why companies are releasing essentially the same product just with different tags and labels, why so many clothes that no one will actually wear are being mass produced and wasted because of that very reason, why some brands are worth billions and yet those who make the items are often still struggling.

One pertinent concern Imran talked about with NYLON Manila during a group interview was one involving waste, sustainability, and the choices of the youth as a consumer in the ever-changing realm of fashion worldwide.

“What I find so inspiring and so exemplary about Gen Z is…given that it is the generation that’s grown up with the climate crisis, it’s shaped they engage with the world at large. Not just fashion, but everything,” Imran says. “And it’s interesting when I talk to people of that cohort and I see the way they make decisions around the way they purchase fashion.”

Fast fashion has caught intense new heat in recent years, as its impact on not just the environment but also on the lives and livelihoods of garment workers are under scrutiny. It’s growing more popular to choose alternatives to fast fashion like thrifting and championing local artisan work, and not only are these options the more environmentally-conscious ones, but they are also often more affordable.

AFFORDABILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY

As thrifting, secondhand fashion, ukay-ukays, and reselling grow more and more popular, it can be said that these more discerning consumers are walking the talk, aligning their values with their consumption. But you can’t ever say that this is the case all the time.

“There’s an interesting dichotomy that emerges,” Imran shares. “On the one hand, there’s a bunch of kids on Depop buying, thrifting, secondhand, preloved clothes. And they take pride in that. Not just because it’s circular and more sustainable, but also because it’s affordable.”

As the economy worsens and the young generation is rightfully critical of the way the cost of living is skyrocketing, affordability often takes center stage in people’s lives, especially for a generation that’s only starting to earn their own money. “For that group of people,” Imran continues. “It’s a way of engaging with fashion in a way that’s aligned with their values, aligned with their wallets.”

Unfortunately, though, sometimes affordability eclipses everything else—especially in a world that encourages acquiring more and more. Although sustainability is very top-of-mind for many consumers of today, so many people also just want to have clothes, look good, or even cloutchase. What’s the cheapest way to get there?

In this case, sustainability doesn’t just involve the environmental impact of clothing and garments as waste—the very conditions under which a product is produced are important to consider. “On the other hand, when you see the emergence of SHEIN and TEMU and these ultra-fast fashion companies—affordability is there, but who makes those clothes? Under what conditions? With what materials? And with what impact on the environment?”

THE COMPLEXITIES OF GEN Z CONSUMERS

“I think there’s sometimes a misalignment between the values that Gen Z purports to have and the real actions and behaviors that they show when they buy clothes,” Imran comments. Sentiments of sustainability and justice may be leaving young people’s mouths, but do those values always translate into practice?

For instance, another prevalent yet niche issue in the thrifting and secondhand fashion scene is how people source finds from ukays and thrift shops only to resell them for higher prices. There’s also the question of are people actually buying secondhand because they want to champion sustainability or because it’s just more affordable, and they can hoard more for less? Different people make different choices for different reasons, but it’s important to question certain practices when it propagates harm against the environment and laborers themselves.

Even the culture of thrifting has shifted, with thrift shops becoming “gentrified,” with high demand leading to higher prices, when the very essence of the thrift shop is aligned with making clothing accessible to people in need.

With these rampant issues that affect people and planet, it’s pertinent now more than ever to be critical of not only the businesses we transact with or patronize, but also our own values and consumption habits, because these inform the way we engage with not just fashion, but also the world we are about to inherit.

“It’s gonna be interesting to see how, as this generation gets older,” Imran says. “They start to earn their own money, and maybe they can make different decisions about how they engage with fashion and where their money is going to be spent.”
