Time to get obsessed with this rising star co-signed by the likes of Troye Sivan and NCT's Jungwoo.

Music and performance have long been embedded in Lara Andallo’s DNA. Not just a singer, but also a dancer and multi-instrumentalist, the independent Filipino-Australian R&B artist grew up influenced by a musically-inclined family and inspired by the capacity of music to be an avenue for self-expression. Lara’s songs are smooth, rhythmic, head-bopping anthems that showcase her raw musical talent. Her performances are dynamic and electric, and she’s found support from some of the biggest artists of this generation—and she’s just getting started.

Formerly a dancer that dreamt of dancing professionally, Lara’s life turned a sharp corner in her teen years when she had to receive surgeries on both of her ankles after a devastating injury. In the midst of her struggles involving her career, her cultural identity, her sexuality, and her sense of belonging, Lara turned to music—penning personal lyrics and channeling her vulnerabilities into emotive, empowering songs.

Now, the 23-year-old is emerging as one of Australia’s freshest voices, championing the R&B genre with a discography that caught the attention of listeners and even artists from all over the world, such as NCT’s Jungwoo and Australian pop star Troye Sivan.

THE NEXT STEPS

Starting this year until early in 2024, the R&B musician will be touring Australia and New Zealand with American singer-songwriter Kiana Ledé. She will also be the sole Australian artist on the lineup of Souled Out Fest 2024, Australia’s own R&B music festival commencing in March. Lara’s going to be showcasing her music and performance to the world (and will even drop by Asia!), and will continue to release new music as she does.

Days before the release of her hottest, silkiest new single Obsessed—her first independent release in more than five years—Lara sat down with NYLON Manila for a chat all about her music, her influences and inspirations, and the journey of music and movement that she’s making her way through.

You’ve worked with artists like Troye Sivan at his songwriting workshop, as well as Swae Lee, Lucky Dae and more. Who has been the most inspirational and what lessons have you learned just from conversations or observing them that you take with you as you continue making music?

With Swae Lee and Jeremih, those guys, I just hung out with them versus [working with them in] the studio. Blxst and Troye Sivan, they’re the ones I spent the most time with in the studio. Troye definitely was a game-changing—life-changing—experience, to be honest. Seeing how he’s broken globally from being a kid from Perth has been really cool. And I’m [bisexual] myself—so seeing a queer pop star, too, is amazing. He really supported me in the [songwriting] session…he’s been such a supportive person behind the scenes.

He was such a hands-on guy and it was really cool to see how much he still has the passion for music. I’m such an observer. I love just watching and learning off of people.

Speaking of working with artists, how does it feel to be touring with Kiana Ledé at the end of this month?

I’m so excited! Playing shows and performing is my favorite part of being an artist. You know, some people love the songwriting recording process, some people don’t like performing and only like that part. I love when I get to bring my music to life, especially using dancing in my live show. Performing is my favorite part. So, I’m so excited to do this tour with Kiana. I’ve been a massive fan since she was doing covers. Being just a fan from the outside, to be on this tour with her is going to be amazing.

lara andallo kiana lede

How important is your identity to your artistry? From your parents’ instrumentality to your Filipino and Australian heritage, and even your sexuality, how do these aspects of yourself come through in your music?

Starting with just the Filipino heritage, I grew up singing karaoke, even though I’m in Australia. From three years old, I remember my go-to song was Celine Dion’s All By Myself. My mom played piano before, and my dad used to play guitar…and my mom was in chorale back home. So the music was there. They never pursued it, but I knew that both my parents were creative. So that definitely funneled down to me.

I think growing up in Australia, as a Filipino female, I didn’t grow up with a lot of people that looked like me, so I definitely struggled a lot with identity because I didn’t have this sense of belonging. And then when you add [the bisexuality] on top of that, I really struggled with feeling that belonging in going into my teenage years.

But when I started to be able to express that in my songwriting privately [and as things grew], I think that’s when I started to find strength in those insecurities and make them a big part of the identity that I push out as an artist. Now, as I’ve been able to anchor myself in those things, they’ve become such a big part of what I actually express now.

You turned to music during a hard time in your life. How was it to deviate from your plans of being a dancer and experience that kind of struggle but then also find a renewed and deeper love for music?

It was such an interesting time for me because I had four surgeries on my ankles, two when I was 15, and then the second round when I was 17. I ended up being in a wheelchair for a bit because I had to learn how to walk again.

From being a dancer that relies on movement as like self-expression, I didn’t realize how much that would affect my expression, you know? So I think once I went through the feeling of having that form of self-expression taken away from me, and then leaning back on music as a crutch to get through it, that’s when I realized how powerful [music and songwriting] was.

Obsessed marks a new era for you. Could you tell me more about your upcoming summer single and what’s next for you moving forward?

I’m so excited to have it out! I think, being a freshly independent artist—like I wrote this song at the end of May, and to have it out in the same year is crazy, because when you’re not independent, there are certain timelines and timeframes you have to work towards. So I think for me moving forward, it’s gonna be really fun to be able to do things at a pace that I can and want to do [them in].

In March next year, I’m doing Souled Out Festival! So that’s going to be a really fun one for me, and the biggest audiences that I’ve played as well, so I’m really excited for that one. I definitely also want to just keep releasing new music consistently for the fans. That’s what I’m most excited about.

lara andallo souled out music festival

Do you have any advice for your younger self that other people could also stand to learn from?

I think a big thing that I’ve learned this year, after five years of this…I really would have told myself to just trust my gut from the start. There are a lot of things when I was 17, 18, going into the music industry that I feel like I instinctively felt I had gut feelings about. But being a young female in the music industry, it’s a bit hard to outweigh [experienced] people’s opinions. And you don’t have any backing in terms of your gut—you don’t have any history of your gut being right, so it’s hard to trust it.

I’ve learned throughout the years that when it comes to art, when it comes to music, and you’re the artist—your instinct is usually the way that things should go. When it comes to the music and when it comes to the creative [decisions], just always trust yourself and trust your gut.

ENHYPEN Forges A Deeper Bond With ENGENEs Through ORANGE BLOOD As They Strive To Create A Lasting Impact

line
The saga continues.

The fourth-generation K-pop powerhouse is back to dominate the charts and everyone’s hearts.

Related: Pinoy ENGENES May Just Be The Best Fandom In The World After ENHYPEN’s Manifesto In Manila

Three years have already passed since ENHYPEN, now a powerhouse in the K-pop realm, made its remarkable entrance into the industry, and it seemed to happen in just the blink of an eye. It’s fate that intertwined the paths of these seven multifaceted individuals. And those assets ultimately led to the band’s meteoric rise, not only captivating audiences with their charismatic performances but also reigning supreme over charts and ENGENEs’ hearts.

Within just three years, JUNGWON, HEESEUNG, JAY, JAKE, SUNGHOON, SUNOO, and NI-KI have already etched their names in history as a group that filled stadiums and arenas, sold millions of copies with their albums, and has multiple No.1s to their name. Yet, amidst all these historic achievements, the members remain grounded and deeply committed to using their influence for good. “I hope we’ll be remembered as good human beings,” ENHYPEN’s leader, JUNGWON, tells NYLON Manila.

THE SWEET, SWEET VENOM

In addition to their goals, the seven-piece group always strives to bring out the best in themselves with each comeback. “There could be more expectations from people, but our goal is and will always be releasing an album that’s different from the others,” ENHYPEN said during the media showcase for ORANGE BLOOD, held a day prior to the album release. Instead of viewing public expectations as a pressure, the members embrace them as an energizing force to reach even greater heights.

Their fifth mini-album, ORANGE BLOOD, marks a continuation of ENHYPEN’s captivating storyline, initially unveiled in DARK BLOOD, which delves into themes of sacrifice, love, and the profound connection they share with their fans. While the album’s narrative led them to another realization that nothing lasts forever, ENHYPEN hopes to leave behind an indelible mark: to be remembered as a group that has a “significant force in the history of music and a symbol of an era in itself.”

ENHYPEN

“I would give up heaven if I had to, just to get another taste of your sweet venom,” sing the members on the bridge and chorus. With a captivating funk-pop rhythm, the record’s title track, Sweet Venom, delves into the boys’ unwavering devotion despite the intoxicating poison coursing through their veins. This sentiment is expressed in the three versions of the song: Korean, where notably, JAY is credited as one of the lyricists, English, and the band’s collaboration with Bella Poarch. The album offers an array of diverse B-side tracks, ranging from the R&B grooves of Mortal and Blind to the pop ballad Still Monster and the soft pop charm of Orange Flower (You Complete Me).

ORANGE BLOOD came after the successfully concluded shows in the US, as part of their second world tour aptly named, FATE. Speaking of the tour, the septet is set to return to the Philippines on February 3 at the New Clark City Stadium, making history as the first musical act to hold a concert at the venue. Coincidentally, FATE in the Philippines will mark exactly a year since their three-day MANIFESTO show in Manila, which also commenced on the same day. With their immense popularity in the country, the members are brimming with excitement to share this unforgettable experience with their Filipino fans. “We truly appreciate all the love we’re receiving from our ENGENEs in the Philippines,” shares NI-KI.

In commemoration of their triumphant return, NYLON Manila had the pleasure of speaking with the members for an exclusive interview, where they opened up about working on the album, the immense support they receive from ENGENEs, and their aspirations to establish a timeless legacy in the scene.

First and foremost, congratulations on your comeback! Could you please tell us your experience working on the album in general and do you have any behind-the-scenes stories from filming the videos? Also, considering that you also sort of acted in the concept trailers for your previous album, were there any fresh insights into acting or lessons you were able to learn from your last comeback that you were able to apply to the preparations for this album?

SUNOO: The overall album preparation process went very smoothly. While shooting the concept trailer, I felt a bit awkward at first since it was my first time properly acting, but our director Yu Kwang Goeng really helped us out a lot. As for the Sweet Venom music video, I recall it being quite hot as we had to wear thick layers of clothes in the middle of summer. Nevertheless, our outfits complemented the mood of the music video, and I’m happy with how it turned out. The video was filmed in the style of a “mannequin challenge,” which was a fresh experience for us.

SUNGHOON: I completely immersed myself in the storyline of this concept trailer, and it was enjoyable to delve into acting and even take on some action scenes.

JAY, you’re credited as one of the songwriters for the title track “Sweet Venom.” What was it like to be able to engage in the artistic aspects of creating music?

JAY: Seeing my name in the credits is a great honor, and it’s something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. I consider it a starting point, and I’m committed to putting in even more effort to get even more deeply involved in the album-making process.

The BLOOD series is about you being determined to make sacrifices, and this applies to you as an idol. You’ve gone through a lot just to be where you are right now. With that, what are you willing to let go off for you to live the life you want and know you deserve?

JAKE: I truly believe in the saying, “Hard work will pay off.” As with many roles, being an artist comes with its challenges as well. But I believe that overcoming these difficulties is the key to success, so I strive to push myself harder to become better as both an artist and a human being. I consider myself fortunate and grateful to have someone to rely on during tough times — our fans, ENGENEs.

ENHYPEN

During the BYS press conference in Manila last December, JUNGWON said it’s ENGENEs that propelled ENHYPEN this far. Your love for your fans is also evident in this album, ORANGE BLOOD. How would you define ENGENEs? What else, besides the support that ENGENEs are giving you, do you believe keeps you moving forward every day?

JUNGWON: Performing on stage is what we do, so having people who love us unconditionally even when we’re not performing is something we’re immensely thankful for. The mere presence of ENGENEs gives us strength and motivates us to keep moving forward.

You embarked on a tour just around two years after making your debut. At first, did all of these happenings and accomplishments, along with the attention you’ve been receiving, overwhelm you so much? What does it feel like to be in such a spotlight as one of the top-performing groups in the K-pop scene right now?

HEESEUNG: I’ve never felt overwhelmed by the attention we receive. Rather, I cherish each and every moment spent with our fans and just really appreciate their support. I’ll keep pushing myself to make the most of our time with ENGENEs.

How do you overcome the pressure of being an idol, and what kind of mindset and attitude do you have right now as you go forward knowing that there will be ups and downs that you will be facing in the future?

NI-KI: When going through tough times, I tend to reflect on the happy memories from the past. I made so many incredible memories during the FATE world tour so far, and I think I’m going to dwell on these memories whenever I need a boost.

ENHYPEN

What kind of artist, that you’re working on yourself right now, do you want people to know about, to show to the world as you continue to pursue this journey? What do you want people to remember about you, let’s say maybe in about 10 or 20 years?

JUNGWON: I aspire for ENHYPEN to be an artist who spreads positive influence. However, most importantly, I hope we’ll be remembered as good human beings.

SUNGHOON: A legend.

JAY: My hope is that ENHYPEN will be remembered as a significant force in the history of music and a symbol of an era in itself.

ENHYPEN has a huge fanbase in the Philippines; you sold out all three days of your MANIFESTO shows here, and you’re set to perform at the New Clark City Stadium as the first-ever K-pop act to do so. How was your experience with the Manila crowd and do you have any messages for your Filipino fans?

NI-KI: We truly appreciate all the love we’re receiving from our ENGENEs in the Philippines. We’ll do our best to deliver the best performances during our upcoming concert in New Clark City. I hope you’re looking forward to it!

ENHYPEN

We heard that the members had been listening to songs by Filipino artists like Raining in Manila, Give Me Your Forever, and more — and your fans in the Philippines have been going crazy about it. How did you found out about these songs?

JAKE: I’m always fascinated by songs from different countries sung in various languages. I got to know these songs through ENGENEs’ recommendations, so thank you ENGENEs for suggesting these songs to me. I love them!

HEESEUNG: I stumbled upon these songs while listening to music one day, and I looked them up later because I really liked them. It makes me happy to see that ENGENEs and I share a similar taste in music!

If you have the time to do so, is there any place in the Philippines that you’ve heard about that you want to visit?

SUNOO: I would love to visit Boracay Island for a relaxing getaway at its beautiful beach!

Tips and Philippine Product Recos for Curly Hair

5 Content Creators Reveal Their Tips and Product Recos for Curly Hair

line
Curly care is health care.

Dealing with curly hair can be quite the challenge. But don’t stress, these five Filipinas have your back with their tips and product suggestions to keep those curls bouncy, healthy, and frizz-free.

Related: These 5 Personalities Embraced Their Natural Curls and So Can You

While Asians are stereotypically associated with and even push the straight hair agenda on others, there are those who proudly flaunts their curliest strands. But curly hair and the humidity of a tropical country aren’t necessarily a match made in heaven. If you resonate with this, chances are your mothers might have splurged on rebonding sessions instead of seeking the right routines for healthy, frizz-free hair. However, a community of content creators has risen to challenge the notion that straightening is the sole solution.

For these five Filipinas, it’s all about discovering techniques and products tailored for curly hair. The good news? We’ve got you covered with their tips and product recommendations to achieve lively, well-hydrated locks. Scroll down—you might find your newest addition to your daily hair routine!

Curlico. Dream Curl™ Curl Defining Crème Gel

“When it comes to hair, my top advice is to shower it with love! Embracing and appreciating the beauty of our curly hair is crucial. Managing it requires effort, but it becomes easier when you genuinely love and appreciate it. Each curl is unique, with different types and patterns, and each absorbs moisture differently. There’s no one-size-fits-all method. I have friends with similar curls, but our hair reacts differently to products. Thus, understanding how your hair absorbs moisture is crucial.

For low porosity hair that struggles to absorb moisture, opt for lightweight products to avoid buildup. High porosity hair, which quickly absorbs and loses moisture, benefits from deep conditioning. With my Type 3 curls, I prioritize weekly deep conditioning, using leave-in conditioners and gel. On the other hand, Type 4 coils require gentle detangling to prevent damage. It’s all about finding the right balance.

My product recommendations? For newcomers, start with a sulfate-free shampoo, conditioner, weekly deep conditioner, leave-in, and gel. A local gem I highly recommend is Curlico Dream Defining Gel, a cost-effective gel and cream hybrid suitable for various curl patterns.” – Samira Ibrahim (@samarainspires)

Curls by Zenutrients

“I think that using a deep conditioner weekly has been the most significant game-changer in maintaining the health of my curls. When it comes to styling, I follow what I humorously call the SSS styling method. (I can’t take credit for coining that term, so don’t quote me on it! Haha), but basically the three S is section, shake, & scrunch. I find this technique incredibly effective in enhancing natural curls.

For me, a fool-proof curly hair routine would include a shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner, perhaps a curl cream, and finally, gel. My favorite recommendations for local curly hair products come from the brands Curls by Zenutrients and Curlssential. I’ve been using products from both brands since the very start of my curly hair journey, and I still love them to this day.” – Althea Claire (@altheaclaireyt)

Luxe Organix Premium Keratin Curl & Define Essence

“To maintain healthy curls, certain key ingredients are essential in your hair care routine. Firstly, consider opting for natural oils like sunflower oil to effectively hydrate your hair. Next, invest in a sulfate-free and paraben-free shampoo to soothe your scalp and efficiently cleanse product build-up. When it comes to conditioning, select a moisturizing sulfate-free and protein-free conditioner. This product deeply moisturizes your hair, providing the necessary hydration for your curls. You may also want to consider using a protein conditioner infused with keratin or coconut to restore and maintain curl definition, revitalizing your curls and preserving their natural shape.

Lastly, it’s important to include curl essence or stylers in your routine. These products are crucial for styling your hair and reducing frizz, giving you greater control over your curly locks.

For product recommendations, I suggest trying Human Nature Sunflower Oil, Katháre Haircare shampoo bars, and Luxe Organix Premium Keratin Curl & Define Essence.” – Bestie Jela (@JelaCarpio)

Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector

“Start by getting the most accessible products for you. The most basic products include a good shampoo, two types of conditioner (one with protein and one without), and finally, a moisturizing leave-in or curl cream. If you aim to prolong wash days, consider locking in moisture by purchasing a styler such as gels, foams, or mousses. If your hair is damaged, incorporating treatments like deep conditioners and bond builders becomes necessary, although these might be considered optional now. Remember, scalp care is always crucial, so don’t forget to cleanse your scalp!

I always recommend including Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector or Curlsmith Bond Curl Rehab Salve to repair damaged hair bonds, particularly for dyed curly hair. For those who want a sulfate-free shampoo that is gentle and cleansing, I do recommend Dermtropics Gentle Nourising Shampoo. In terms of conditioners, Curls by Zenutrients offers a protein conditioner ideal for those in need of strengthening.” Tiffany Kang (@creatiff.curls)

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie

“Shea Moisture is my ultimate go-to. It’s ideal for curly hair due to its natural moisturizing properties. Additionally, Shea Moisture is free from parabens, phthalates, paraffin, formaldehyde, propylene oil, mineral oil, synthetic color, animal testing, or synthetic testing coloring. The Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie feels like heaven in a jar and works wonders in controlling frizz. As a curly girl, I highly recommend trying any product with Shea butter and witness the beautiful transformation of curly hair.

Now, patience and consistency can go a long way for every person with curly hair! And remember, avoid touching those curls!” – Dannah (@Dannannah)

Meet Jose Miguel, A Gen Z Crooner For The Next Generation

line
So, you like jazz?

Jose Miguel is here to prove that jazz standards still have their place in the Gen Z playlist.

Related: Stacey Ryan Is Bringing Jazz To Gen Z Pop

In today’s pantheon of pop hits, rap bangers, rock anthems, and more that are dominating the airwaves and headphones of Gen Z, there’s a genre that has been having a resurgence of sorts: jazz. Whether it be the 1940s or the 2020s, jazz has been finding its way back on the mainstream radar of the new generation. Despite some having the stereotypical idea that jazz is just meant for elevators and hotel lounges, the genre has been seeing a new breed of young stars who are helping champion it for modern ears.

The rise of artists like Laufey has proven that jazz can find an audience amongst Gen Z. And one up-and-coming young Filipino musician is looking to make that same impact as he embarks on the start of a career combining his love for jazz with stories that speak to him told through a smooth, suave, and sophisticated energy. Step into the artistry of Jose Miguel.

MODERN-DAY CROONER

An old soul living in the new, Jose Miguel’s journey to music began with his family, in particular his grandfather. His music, from greats such as Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, pushed him to be the artist he is today. A performance at one of his dad’s birthday celebrations pushed the young musician to take a chance at singing, with performances at school and small gigs being some of his first tastes of the crooner life. And all while, he did these gigs decked out in suits and styles akin to what a classic jazz singer would at just 16, a fitting attire if anything else.

JOSE MIGUEL

Soon enough, Jose Miguel settled on jazz, folk, and big band music as his forte as he looked to bring authenticity, soul, and the distinct slick sound and energy of that time to his music. And speaking of music, he’s coming out swinging with his first double release, Is This Love? consisting of two songs: Love Is You and Free. The former explores the complex and emotional journey of the possibility of falling in love while the latter invites listeners to take a chance and encourage spontaneity as you let go of self-judgment.

We recently got the chance to speak with Jose Miguel as he opened up about his music, love for jazz, and more. Read on below for the full interview.

How would you describe who Jose Miguel is as an artist?

Jose Miguel is a jazz singer-songwriter who speaks of the rollercoaster ride of life and love. He is one who expresses his emotions through music.

It is said that it was your grandfather’s music that inspired you the most. What was it about the songs and artists he listened to that attracted you to them?

My grandfather is one of my greatest influences. At a young age, he showed me the music that he loved which was reminiscent of his day. I was exposed to a number of crooners such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Nat King Cole. I immediately fell in love with the way the singers would show emotion through storytelling and how they would sing in a manner that touched your heart.

As I got older, I also saw the way that these idols of mine would carry themselves outside of their performances, similar to how I viewed my grandfather on a normal daily basis. So I guess you could say that I did not only fall in love with the music, but I also fell for the lifestyle of a crooner born in the “golden era”.

If you could describe what jazz is to a Gen Z audience, what would you say?

It would be difficult for me to describe jazz without singing. So I hope that the body of work that I put out would be able to paint a picture for the Gen Z audience. A few words.

What is it about jazz that you like so much about it?

Jazz about everything! Seriously though, the ups the downs, the storytelling, and the emotion behind the voice and song.

JOSE MIGUEL

Where do you get the inspiration for your music?

From real-life experiences and the experiences of others. I write about places, people, and scenarios that I am exposed to on a very real basis, so whatever I write is always authentic.

How are you feeling with Is This Love? finally coming out and the world getting to hear who Jose Miguel is?

Honestly, it has been a dream of mine ever since to be able to write these songs and even more so, record and perform them in front of the world. I am very excited to showcase this as an introduction to what is to come. It’s a full-circle moment for me. I started with jazz, went through a whole lot of genres, and to no surprise, I am always led back home to jazz.

What do you have to say to young people who think that jazz is a genre just for adults?

I would say, give it a chance. Sit down, have some coffee or what have you, take some time to listen and maybe it might speak to you the way it does to me and to those who enjoy it. Or you could give this first release a listen. 😉 Jazz is for everyone and it might jazz be for you! 😉

With artists like Laufey, Samara Joy, and now you, jazz has been having a moment with Gen Z. Why do you think the genre still holds relevance to the new generation?

Just like how our grandfathers and grandmothers, fathers and mothers have enjoyed music at their time. It is timeless. It is one of the foundations of a lot of the music that you hear today. It appeals simply because it is simple yet complicated. Just like some of the stories, beautiful but tragic and oh so magic.

JOSE MIGUEL

What impact are you hoping to make in the industry?

I just want to be able to share the music I write and make with the world. I hope that this finds a home in the hearts of the listeners. I would also like to represent my grandfather, my father, and all the idols that I have learned from.

Why do you think the sounds and melodies of yesteryears are ready for a revival in this day and age?

I believe in timing. There is a reason why all of the jazz artists of today are breaking the numbers. It just shows that the public is ready to embrace the sounds of yesterday with the clothes and smiles of today. Jazz has been asleep in pop culture for some time. Finally, jazz is home. It’s about time.

We witnessed Jeromy’s love and passion for dance at our October cover shoot, where the young idol danced his heart out to the songs playing over the speakers and gave us a glimpse of his talent firsthand. From Seventeen’s Super to Stay Kids’ S-Class, Jiro and his fellow members ate up the choreo of every song we played. We even glimpsed him doing little dance moves in between clicks of the camera. Serving face card in the camera then eating the dance floor right after? We know that’s right.

AS PART OF A DANCE TROUPE

If you didn’t know, Jeromy was part of a dance group Electro Groovers back when he was around nine years old. While he was on the team, Electro Groovers won the World Supremacy Battlegrounds International Kids Champions in Sydney, Australia in 2018. The group showed support for the young performer throughout his participation on Dream Maker, and was even ready with a whole throwback album to congratulate him when he won. Look how adorable he is!

IN EVERY SINGLE FANCAM

Whether or not you’re a fancam watcher, Jeromy’s perfectly-crafted expressions and crisp dance moves makes his solo videos so enjoyable to watch. Watching his fancams also gives you a glimpse into his growth from Dream Maker up to his Korean stage performances. Witness his talents right here.

CHOREOGRAPHER WITH A VISION

At HORI7ON’s first concert Voyage To Manila, Jeromy performed his solo song featuring Leo of TFN—the dance break of which he choreographed himself. Not all dancers are choreographers, but the young artist put his all into crafting something special for himself and his fans, and the electric performance was a testament to his dancing forte.

What’s a faster way to get productive than watching other people get their life together?

There is a certain appeal found in watching people on screen get their life together through a carefully curated routine. Watching others arrange their desk, color their notion pages and journals, go on walks, and reset their life usually sparks an unexplainable drive for viewers to mimic their actions in an attempt to live the same “life on track” they see on screen.

Picking up a routine or embodying a positive mantra from virtual study buddies collates an abundant pool of habits that could help you improve how you live life in the long run. For some, this could just be an attempt to fuel themselves to move. Does it work? Sometimes, but we love these videos anyway.

And when scrolling across social media, you’d find a fair share of content creators whose vlogs make you feel like you want to get your life in order. There have been representations from every university, providing a study buddy for a more diverse audience. Haven’t found your buddy you can live vicariously with? 9 Celebs You Probably Didn’t Know Were Once In A Reality Competition Show

line

Before they were starring in movies and TV shows and performing in stadiums, these stars first got the taste of the limelight through reality competition.

Related: 14 Young Filipino Stars Who Worked Completely Different Jobs Before Fame

Before stars became, well, stars, they first had to start somewhere. For a few famous faces, that meant appearing in reality competition shows. More than just shows to pass the time, these programs served as a way for people to reach their dreams, often for the first time. And in the storied history of competition show contestants in the Philippines, it included soon-to-be celebrities. These opportunities gave them the first taste of the limelight as well as a starting chapter in their future careers. Here are some famous faces and the reality competition shows you probably didn’t know they joined.

IVANA ALAWI – STARSTRUCK

Before she ruled YouTube and acting, Ivana was once a young girl hoping to break into showbiz. And one of her first attempts to do so was joining the sixth season of StarStruck, where she finished in the Top 22.

ZACK TABUDLO – THE VOICE KIDS PHILIPPINES

You would think that with the way Zack has captured the world’s attention with his music that’s equal parts savage and tender, you’d think he’d be a shoo-in for any singing competition he joins. But that wasn’t the case when he competed on The Voice Kids Philippines season one. Under Coach Bamboo, the OPM star was eliminated in the battle stages.

KYLINE ALCANTARA – STAR CIRCLE QUEST: SEARCH FOR THE NEXT KIDDIE SUPERSTARS

Oftentimes, there’s a stigma on being the first one eliminated in a competition show. But just because you went home first, doesn’t mean it will define who you become. Just take a look at Kyline Alcantara who was a contestant on Star Circle Quest: Search for the Next Kiddie Superstars. While she did make it to the Top 10 of the show, she became the Porkchop of her season, aka the first contestant to be eliminated from the show.

CRIZA TAA – PBB OTSO

While many know Criza as the GRWM queen with a outgoing personality, she was once a teen girl who competed on Pinoy Big Brother Otso. Even if she didn’t make it far into the season, she already showed viewers her fierce and bubbly persona that many people love.

MIGUEL TANFELIX – STARSTRUCK KIDS

Who says you need to win a reality competition show to be successful in showbiz? Not Miguel Tanfelix, who, before becoming Steve Armstrong in Voltes V: Legacy, was a contestant on the kid’s version of StarStruck in 2004, ultimately being a finalist and being named First Prince. A role as Young Pagaspas in Mulawin soon after kickstarted his acting career.

NIKKI DE MOURA – SUPERMODEL ME

Before she was stomping down runways as a multi-crowned beauty queen, Nikki was once an aspiring model and even competed in the sixth season of the model reality competition show SupermodelMe in 2021. Even then, she was already a force to be reckoned with as she placed first runner-up.

BINI’S GWEN AND SHEENA – PBB OTSO

PBB has a bit of a reputation for being a highkey celebrity-churner whenever a new season rolls around. Even contestants who don’t make it to the finals can still make a career in showbiz. That was the case for BINI’s Gwen and Sheena. Both were contestants on PBB Otso but were evicted later in the season.

BIANCA DE VERA – JUNIOR MASTERCHEF

These days, you can catch this young actress on shows such as 2 Good 2 Be True and Unbreak My Heart. But in 2011, Bianca found herself in a completely different field, cooking, as she was a contestant on Junior MasterChef Pinoy Edition.

MEGAN YOUNG – STARSTRUCK AND PBB CELEBRITY EDITION 2

Well before she became Miss World 2013 and even before she turned 18, Megan was already a veteran of two competition shows. First, her showbiz break came when she joined StarStruck season two, where she finished in the top six, becoming a season two avenger. Then, in 2007, she was included in the cast of the second celebrity edition of PBB, where she was eventually evicted on Day 35.

Wishing Upon A Star: 7 Times Zephanie Proved She Was An Actual Disney Princess

Princess Zephanie.

Besides singing ‘Aking Hiling,’ the Filipino version of ‘This Wish’ from Disney film Wish, young Zephanie is a Disney Princess in her own right.

What makes a Disney princess? Well, one deep-dive into Zephanie Dimaranan, or Zephanie, will give you the answer. The 20-year old singer and actress isn’t just a Disney princess because she sings the Filipino version of Wish (2023)’s theme song Aking Hiling (which is a stellar feat on its own), but also for a myriad of reasons.

We’ve witnessed the young superstar’s growth since the beginning, from singing on television series to joining and winning singing competitions like Idol Philippines (as the first ever grand winner, BTW!), performing at our live anniversary concert to starring in Sparkle U. Zephanie’s ascent into stardom is truly commendable. With her enchanting vocals and kind disposition, Zephanie constantly proves she’s a wonderful choice to sing a Disney anthem. The people’s princess! Here are a few reasons why Zephanie may as well be a reincarnated Disney Princess.

SINGING AT THE LAUNCH OF DISNEY+ PHILIPPINES

@zephanaticsofc This performance is so magical ✨ Can't get over it! #Zephanie #WhenYouWishUponAStar #Pinocchio #DisneyPlus #DisneyPlusPH #fyp #trending #viral ♬ original sound – Zephanatics Official

The young singer got the chance to perform at the launch of Disney+ in the Philippines, singing When You Wish Upon A Star from 1940 film Pinocchio. With her icy, sparkling dress and angelic voice, Zephanie looked very much like Disney royalty.

ACHIEVING HER DREAMS

Despite the challenges they face, Disney princesses always push forward to achieve their dreams. From Moana’s strong will to Merida’s tenacity, the mark of a Disney princess involves having the courage to turn aspirations into reality. Besides winning Idol Philippines and living out her dream as a musician, Zephanie was also able to graduate in the midst of her hectic, glamorous schedule. She’s giving Mia Thermopolis.

DRESSED TO THE NINES IN PRINCESS-LIKE DRESSES

ZEPHANIE PRINCESS
ZEPHANIE PRINCESS

Zephanie in stunning gowns totally gives princess vibes, whether she’s performing in them or just looking stunning on a red carpet. From a mint bow dress to a sparkling white gown, the young star looks ever-ready to be the belle of the ball.

MORE DISNEY COVERS

We simply can’t get enough of Zephanie’s sweet and melodic voice. From dueting Camp Rock hits with VXON’s Franz to covering Disney classic I See The Light, the 20-year old proves she’s literally the voice of this generation.

SHOWING LOVE TO HER ANIMAL FRIENDS

Happy birthday CopCop my luv 🫶🏼🐾

What’s a Disney princess without her adorable, loving animal friends? Zephanie is a self-proclaimed dog-lover, at one point having seven dogs at home. She’s a caring, loving pet owner, and kindhearted to boot.

SHE’S GENEROUS AND SWEET

Zephanie totally takes popular Cinderella line “have courage and be kind” to heart. In an online interview, AC Bonifacio took the time to shoutout the singer for dropping off watermelon for her while at work. Zephanie’s been hailed as a humble, sweet young girl living her dreams, and it’s delightful to witness her growth.

SINGING AN ACTUAL DISNEY SONG

And finally, in a definitive moment that solidifies Zephanie as a Disney Princess, Disney themselves tapped the artist to sing Aking Hiling, the Filipino version of This Wish from fantasy-musical Wish (2023). Zephanie powerfully sings Aking Hiling with vibrant youthfulness and a whimsy that totally embodies being a Disney princess.

We’re a platform dedicated to telling the biggest, boldest, and bravest stories relevant to generation now, cultivating identity, and encouraging conversation with engaging media and narratives, and this year has been all about that.

Some of our favorite things about NYLON Manila in 2023 is, of course, being a part of it. It includes the creative freedom, the opportunities presented, and the people we meet.

New members of the team have also been opened to a whole new world of media. For instance, for Multimedia Artist Gelo Quijencio, “many doors have opened especially with my creative craft.” Social Media Associate Shane Sy says that her favorite part is “being able to do what I love and working with the best team anyone could ever ask for.” Beauty writer Precy Tan also cited the work environment and the team as some of the best things about NYLON Manila. “Work doesn’t feel like work when you’re surrounded by people who make it fun.
