You’re Not the Best And That’s Okay: Here’s Why You Should Stop Comparing Yourself to Other People

line
You're not Ken, but you are enough.

A gentle reminder: there’s nothing more beautiful than you being yourself.

Related: What Is A Girl’s Girl And How Can You Be One?

I’ve once heard someone say, “When you compare yourself to these girls on social media, you’re comparing the worst version of yourself to their best. After all, who would let the world see the not-so-pretty side of you?” While that’s one of the most beautiful things that has helped me call the cops on my pity party, why was there a need to compare in the first place?

Whether you’re placed in a competitive environment or conditioned to think you’re not enough, comparing yourself to other people can become a coping mechanism—worse when it’s your source of motivation. Now, here’s the thing: When your drive is solely fueled by constant comparisons and the desire to outdo someone else, you’ll find yourself in a never-ending car chase with your well-being taking a backseat. I’ve been there, and it’s easier said than done, but here’s why you should stop comparing yourself to other people.

What Works for Others Won’t Necessarily Work for You

With an average screen time of 10 hours a day, I’m consistently bombarded by these standards and peer pressure. And I’m well aware that I’m not the only one who falls down the rabbit hole of scrolling through Instagram feeds, perpetually trying to become that girl. When we made it a mission to live like those content creators who maintain a healthy lifestyle, a skincare routine, all while juggling good grades or a 9-to-5 job, the reality is that what works for others may not necessarily work for you.

I’m not suggesting that you should put your phone down, delete apps, or stop scrolling through TikTok. My advice? Follow people with a similar look, lifestyle, and mindset. It sets the tone for personal growth and self-confidence, rather than constant comparison. Eventually, you’ll realize that there’s nothing wrong with your so-called flaws.

Success Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

I recall comparing myself to peers who became law school students, flight attendants, and nurses. It was a competitive class, but my mindset was laughably low and immature. If you’re currently in the same situation, it’s important to recognize that success is a highly personal and subjective concept.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer that says, ‘here’s how to achieve your post-college goals.‘ What success means to one person may not hold the same significance for another. After all, the diversity in definitions of success is what makes the real world an amazing place. Whether it’s achieving a fulfilling career, getting married, or contributing to a cause close to your heart, it’s all about defining your own path and determining your measures of achievement. With that, you’ll feel proud of yourself and those people you went to school with. Who knows?

Your Competition Here? Yourself

In relation to the idea that success isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing, I recall seeing a Pinterest post saying that ‘your only competition is yourself‘ and that resonated with me. I understand that it’s a common tendency to compare ourselves to others, especially in a society that often promotes competition. We measure our progress against the achievements and success stories of those around us, believing that this is the path to self-improvement and personal growth. However, this constant comparison hinders our progress.

Instead of investing your so little time in self-doubt, repeatedly telling yourself that you’ll never be the best student or employee of the month, consider redirecting your focus toward the smallest ways you can build better habits. Like, those minutes could’ve been spent on working out, cleaning your living space, and prioritizing your to-do list for the day.

Don’t Stay Toxic, Girl

Being the D.U.F.F (Designated Ugly Fat Friend), I found myself in a perpetual cycle of comparison with my best friend throughout high school. This seemingly harmless habit spiraled into unnecessary anxiety and unwarranted resentment. Before I even realized it, my envy had strained what could have been a beautiful friendship. There’s no taking back what was said and done, but you can learn from my mistake.

When women are perpetually pitted against each other, let’s stop fueling the fire by being toxic towards our female family members, friends, and coworkers. Constantly comparing ourselves to others can lead to envy, resentment, and strained relationships. Instead of nurturing negativity, let’s focus on being a girl’s girl and supporting women, rather than fighting for a non-existent crown of who’s better.

We All Spend The 24 Hours Of The Day Differently

When we’re out here, trying to survive our own demons, those 24 hours can look pretty different from one person to the next. Between workloads, personal circumstances, and the rollercoaster ride of adulting, life has its not-so-fun way of throwing curveballs. Now, why would you compare yourself to somebody else when what truly matters is ending the day with an understanding of the unseen struggles of other people?

Now that's history.

It’s nothing but milestone after milestone after milestone for SB19 and Billboard.

If you traveled back in time to before SB19’s pre-Go Up era and told people that the group would make OPM history, they would probably think you’re joking. But here they are as P-pop’s undeniable leaders who have not only continued to thrive in their careers but also proved their doubters wrong with their achievements. A shining example of that is SB19’s history with Billboard, the authority in music as well as the home of the most talked-about music charts in the world.

The group has always had dreams of going global and bringing OPM to the world stage, and over the past couple of years, they’ve done just that with their historic appearances and career milestones on the Billboard charts. It’s giving global act, and we love to see it. Scroll down for a list of times SB19 made Philippines history on Billboard.

If there was one specific moment that foreshadowed how SB19 was reaching greater heights, it was their nomination for Top Social Artist at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards. Not only was SB19 nominated alongside superstars like BTS and BLACKPINK, but the group also made history as the first Filipino act to make an appearance at the Billboard Music Awards as well as the first Filipino and Southeast Asian artist nominated for Top Social Artist. And while SB19 didn’t win, it was just the start for the group.

FIRST FILIPINO ACT ON THE HOT TRENDING SONGS CHART

SB19 BILLBOARD

While the haters thought that it was impossible, SB19 can proudly say that they’ve topped a Billboard chart. Back in November 2021, Bazinga debuted on Billboard’s Hot Trending Songs chart, which tracks the most talked-about songs on Twitter in real-time. The feat marked the first time a Filipino artist appeared on the chart. Just a month later, Bazinga reached the top spot of the chart, which not only marked the first Billboard chart SB19 has topped but the first time a Filipino artist has ever done so.

MOST WEEKS AT NUMBER ONE ON THE HOT TRENDING SONGS CHART

Bazinga really is that girl. Not only is SB19’s Bazinga a number-one hit, but it also holds the record for most weeks spent at number one on the Hot Trending Songs Chart, taking the crown away from BTS’ Butter.

The release of SB19’s comeback track GENTO in May 2023 was met with so much hype and anticipation. One way that manifested was when the song debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart, making it the first top 10 placement of the group. As you can guess, the feat made it the first time a Filipino band appeared on the chart.

FIRST FILIPINO ACT TO WIN BILLBOARD’S FAN ARMY FACE-OFF 2023

This one is more of an achievement for their fans, but it still fills correct to include it here. Despite the fact that they were up against fandoms of some of the biggest artists in the world, A’TIN proved their might and powered through each round of Billboard’s 2023 Fan Army Face-Off. All their hard work resulted in a win after beating SEVENTEEN’s Carats in the finale after a tight 51.1% to 48.9% vote.

FIRST COVER STARS OF BILLBOARD PHILIPPINES

SB19 BILLBOARD

INSTAGRAM/BILLBOARDPHOFFICIAL

After making history on Billboard countless times, it was only right that SB19 was chosen to be one of the first cover stars of the maiden issue of Billboard Philippines. Together with OPM icon Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, SB19 fronted Billboard PH as an embodiment of the best of OPM and its growing place in the world. It honestly feels like a full-circle moment seeing SB19 go from appearing on Billboard charts to being the cover star for Billboard Philippines, and the first one at that.

So, if you’re looking for something else to do this October aside from preparing your Halloween costume, take a look at these activities for Museums and Galleries Month.

Also, the events aren’t just kept to the complex in Manila but spread out across different museums in the country. Check out their Facebook page for updates on what they have to offer.

This Upcoming Mental Health Summit Is Putting ‘You’ At The Center Of The Community

line
It's all about the community.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, Mind You Philippines is holding its National Mental Health Summit that shines a light on the power of the community.

Related: 7 Ways You Can Support Your Friend Who Is Struggling Mentally

While the bulk of the conversation on mental health revolves around what goes on internally, a big factor that should also be taken into consideration is our environment. The community that surrounds us can have a major impact on our well-being. And that is something Mind You is looking to address with their upcoming Mental Health Summit.

Now in its third year, Mind You’s Mental Health Summit has served as an invaluable tool to help destigmatize mental health in the Philippines as well as be a safe space for people to educate and address their mental well-being. It sheds light on the state of mental health in the country and offers tangible, accessible solutions for the community. And the best part? The whole event is free to attend. Here’s what you need to know about the summit and why you may want to visit it.

MY KAPWA

In a world where community is often the cornerstone of people’s lives, Mind You’s National Mental Health Summit 2023 looks to embark on a journey to build stronger, more resilient societies. This year, the mental health organization is going with the theme of MY Kapwa, a play on Mind You’s initials and a reminder that compassion can be found within ourselves and our communities. Mind You Philippines is dedicating a whole day of events to tackling topics, including the importance of a support system, breaking mental health stigmas, and the courage to be seen, as well as overcoming stress and anxiety.

These will be addressed through group activities, panel discussions, and sessions organized by Mind You and its team of experts with the hopes of highlighting the transformative power of stories, education, and the holistic practice of well-being in shaping our mental health. More importantly, Mind You is aiming for this year’s summit to focus more on stories as they look to intertwine storytelling into the programs, making them not only more personal but hit and resonate at an even deeper level. While dealing with mental health can often feel like an isolating experience, so many people have their struggles to face. You’re not alone in this, and Mind You wants you to remember that with their summit.

WHAT TO EXPECT

So, what exactly can you expect from Mind You’s National Mental Health Summit? A whole day has been dedicated to a variety of activities, from talks, community building, group discussions, breakout sessions, storytelling from real-life mental health advocates and lived-experience survivors, deep-dive panel discussions, and holistic mental health exercises. Specific activities to look out for include a morning wellness practice with David Webb and Meena Mahtani doing light morning yoga, breathing, and meditation at the start of the day, and a session with resilience coach Elle Lane on how to overcome stress.

So, if a day of improving and educating yourself on mental well-being sounds like an activity for you, check out Mind You’s National Mental Health Summit on October 22, 2023, at the BGC Amphitheater in Taguig City. The summit is open to the public, and admission is free. It will run from 8:00 AM-6:30 PM but you’re free to show up anytime you want. 5 Signs It’s Time to Clean Out Your Closet

line
Time to tidy up.

Yes, this is yet another sign for you to declutter your closet and help your clothes find a new life instead of letting them mess up your home.

Related: Here Are Places You Can Visit To Donate Or Buy Second-Hand Clothes

Is your room a mess? Are clothes starting to peek out from your drawers, overfill your hampers, or pile up on your bed or your chairs? You can tidy up, of course—stuff them back into your closet or tuck them away in boxes that will never see the light of day again—but when is it time to actually take your clothes out of your home and into the hands of people willing to buy them or places that take donations?

Decluttering can be difficult, of course. You tell yourself “No, I might still wear that!” or “No way, this means something to me.” But let’s be real—life can already be so chaotic. Why add the stress of mess to your plate? Clutter can negatively impact your mental health and the way you do your day-to-day tasks. So, if you find yourself relating to the signs below, it’s time to make some eliminations. Being critical and a little aggressive in the way you declutter your clothes allows you to find some relief in the cleanliness afterwards and also maybe help your clothes find new homes. Here are some signs to tell you when its time to fix the mess.

YOU CAN “NEVER FIND ANYTHING TO WEAR”

Drawers and cabinets overflowing with clothes and yet you can’t find anything to wear? That’s a sign. It means you either don’t like the individual pieces you own, or don’t like the way those pieces go together. Why keep clothes that no longer serve you? And trust me, if you haven’t worn in it a long time, you probably won’t ever. KonMari Method it.

YOU’RE SEEING CLOTHES EVERYWHERE

On top of a set of drawers in my room are folded clothes that I don’t even wear. They take up so much space that could be used for other things. My drawers won’t close, my cabinet’s a mess, hangers of clothes are packed too tightly in the closet—yeah, it’s time to declutter. If you see clothes where they aren’t supposed to be out of the corner of your eye, it’s time to get sorting and cleaning.

YOU FEEL AN URGE TO SHOP

One of the best pieces of advice floating around social media is if you want to buy a new clothing item, take away one item you already own and no longer like or wear. Donate, sell, or pass it down. This way you avoid hoarding. But if you feel an urge to shop, try decluttering first. It’s almost like shopping with the way you discover clothes you didn’t even realize you owned.

But decluttering isn’t an excuse to go ham on the shopping so you can “replenish” your closet. You can, of course, especially if you want to own clothing that’s made better and more sustainably or that fits you better. But keep in mind—this is an opportunity to be more mindful and intentional with the things you buy and wear.

YOU FEEL A LITTLE STRESSED

Sometimes, you just need to step away from whatever is stressing you out and focus on something else. And cleaning does help with feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Keep your devices away from you and sort through your clothing to allow yourself some room and time to breathe. The act of decluttering doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

CLOTHES DON’T FIT YOU THE SAME ANYMORE

Whether it’s because you’ve grown up or your body’s changed or you no longer have the style you did six or even ten years ago, sometimes you put on an outfit and realize you don’t like the way you look in it. Don’t hesitate—throw it in the sell or donate pile. You’ll feel better about letting your closet breathe and only keeping things you know you’re going to use often and feel great in.

KINGS ON KINGS: JUAN KARLOS AND LUKAS GRAHAM

Luke Graham is a Danish band composed of Lukas Forchhammer, Mark Falgren, and Magnus Larsson. The band is known for hits 7 Years, Love Someone, and Mama Said. The three-time Grammy-nominated band is set to perform at the New Frontier Theater on Sunday, October 22. They were here last in 2019, performing at Eastwood Mall and at Araneta Coliseum for the 4th Wish 107.5 Music Awards.

Musician Juan Karlos on the other hand has had a busy, amazing week as his new single ERE breaks records and goes viral on social media platforms. The 22-year-old artist is also a multi-hyphenate. He’s been making music and performing since he was 13, and acting just a little later. He’s currently starring in teen thriller-drama Senior High with Andrea Brillantes, Kyle Echarri, and Xyriel Manabat. He’s also a fan of Lukas Graham, if you couldn’t tell.

While we wait in anticipation for this collaboration stage between Juan Karlos and Lukas Graham, we’re also wondering who else we’d want to see collaborate! Surely there are plenty of Filipino celebrities who are fans of international artists, and while most of us probably won’t get a “come up on stage with us” invite, we can live vicariously through them.

13 Slasher Films We’re Binge-Watching On Halloween Night

line
Stabbing their way into my heart.

Ready for Halloween? Everyday is Friday the 13th with these slasher films.

Related: 11 Halloween Movies To Watch If You’re A Scaredy-Cat

From Michael Myers to Freddy Kreuger, who would most likely become besties if these iconic slashers met IRL? Whatever the answer is, I’m sure of one thing: nothing will beat these masked madmen of cinema. We’re talking The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. However, some modern slasher films like Happy Death Day and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark keep the subgenre alive and kicking today — which is more than most stereotypical villain can say to their victims.

If you’re seeking to add some spine-tingling thrills to your Halloween night, we’ve got you covered with a carefully curated selection of binge-worthy classics and new releases. From psychological thrillers to a blood bath, everyday is Friday the 13th with these slasher films. Spoiler alert: you won’t find sequels on the list, (hot take: no lucrative franchise was that good—ever).

Psycho (1960)

Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho remains a timeless masterpiece of thriller and psychological horror. To this day, the iconic shower scene and the mention of Bates’s motel sends shivers down my spine. It’s actually the first film that started my obsession with horror movies.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is an unrelenting classic in the slasher genre. Tobe Hooper’s gritty direction and the film’s raw, unsettling portrayal of family horrors make it a haunting experience that leaves a lasting impression. Not to mention, it introduced the infamous Leatherface.

Halloween (1978)

John Carpenter’s Halloween gave the world Michael Myers, the embodiment of pure evil. This slasher set the standard for the genre, emphasizing suspense over excessive gore. And, while we’re on the subject of the fan-favorite villain, we know that the franchise wouldn’t be the same without Jamie Lee Curtis’ portrayal of Laurie Strode.

Friday the 13th (1980)

Now, there’s just something about summer slashers that will forever hold my heart in the shape of a hockey mask. I’m all about the suspenseful reopening of the Crystal Lake Camp, slow deaths, and the revelation of the masked madman that set the stage for the long-running horror franchise Friday the 13th. Not to mention, the debate over whether Jason Voorhees deserves to be called a villain makes this classic a must-watch.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street introduced Freddy Krueger, a dream-dwelling slasher who haunted the dreams of teenagers in a small suburban town. With its inventive premise, the film blurred the lines between dreams and reality, creating a literal nightmare. This iconic killer, with his scarred face, fedora, and razor-fingered glove, delved into the deeper fears of the human psyche, making it a standout in my long list of slasher films.

Scream (1996)

Drew Barrymore and Courtney Cox rolled into one slasher film? Bet! Another one of Wes Craven’s creations, Scream reinvigorated the slasher genre by cleverly deconstructing its own conventions. With a self-aware script, a star-studded cast, and the iconic Ghostface, no one should hang up first in this classic.

Child’s Play (1988)

Chucky, one of the most memorable slasher killers in movies, made his debut in this horror classic. With a balance of humor and horror, Child’s Play introduced a unique, if somewhat unhinged, concept to the gruesome genre. The film beautifully blended the chilling presence of a possessed doll with moments of dark humor, setting the stage for a franchise that would leave audiences with both laughter and shivers. I remember watching this for the first time and thinking it wasn’t that scary—until I had my dolls removed from the room. LOL.

Jigsaw (2017)

My mom is a sucker for the Saw franchise, and I remember her being first in line at the cinema for its return with Jigsaw. While classic slasher films hold a special place, Jigsaw is still just as gruesome as the original. It was one of my first mind-bending movies, not due to the puzzles and riddles, but because it forced me to reflect on what’s morally right or wrong when lives are at stake. And we’ll break our own rules a little by mentioning Saw X as a worthy watch in cinemas.

Happy Death Day (2017)

One of my irrational fears? The time-loop concept. I would rather run away from Michael Myers than living out my death day in a never-ending cycle. But if you’re into that type of story, Happy Death Day centers around a self-absorbed college student who becomes trapped in a time loop, repeatedly reliving her own mystery murder until she uncovers the identity of the Bayfield Babyface Killer.

Ready or Not (2019)

If you’re getting married soon, this slasher film adds a scare to the thought of having monster-in-laws. Ready or Not serves a darkly comedic take on the deadly game of hide-and-seek on a silver platter. While the ending could’ve been better, it does radiate WTF energy and there’s no denying that we were all rooting for the strong and savage Samara Weaving.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)

Based on beloved children’s not-so-scary stories, this film brings classic Halloween themes to life with impressive visuals and a spooky vibe. Think scarecrows, haunted houses, and your worst nightmares coming to haunt you. Freaky (2020)

Imagine Freaky Friday meeting The Hot Chic in the slasher genre. As you might have guessed, the plot twist in this horror-comedy is that the villain swaps bodies with their teenage victim. Don’t worry, no spoilers ahead. To say the least, Vince Vaughn’s performance as the killer in the young girl’s body strikes the perfect balance between thrills and laughs.

Coming from the traditional Filipino mindset, we were constantly bombarded with the notion that hobbies are primarily intended for leisure—like another way to de-stress after a grueling workweek of grinding. But this whole concept painted a big ‘X’ on art-related passions, implying that they were burning money. Gen Z is here to prove that this age-old sentiment is not a universal truth.

Meet Erin Cervanez, an exceptional Filipina fiber artist who has proven that passions combined with art are boundless. If her name sounds familiar, that’s because she’s behind mmelc, the brand behind that viral crochet butterfly tops. This 21-year old has taken the art of crocheting—a craft often seen as a chill pastime—and turned it into a thriving small business. You’ve probably seen her crocheted creations on TV screens, worn by your favorite celebrities, content creators, and girl groups. Get to know her and her craft in our interview below.

Introduce yourself.

I’m Erin Cervanez, a 21-year-old Filipina fiber artist. I am the creative mind behind my own brand, mmelc. Within my small startup, I specialize in the art of crocheting and knitting, weaving together threads for handmade pieces.

How did you get into the art and business of weaving threads together?

As a crafty kid who got her hands on loombands (the nostalgia! hahaha), I found myself enjoying the slow process of creating. It was almost a decade ago, and it’s also around that time when my Aunt (shoutout to you, Mommy Yeye) brought home the first crochet hooks and yarn that I own. I still have them with me, proving the longevity of crochet.

I’m self-taught; I started with online tutorials for basic techniques and then found free patterns for cute items. After that, I freehanded almost everything I crocheted. I stopped when I reached high school because it wasn’t considered a ‘cool’ hobby back then. It was associated with grandmas on television, doing it in their rocking chairs. I just left the materials under my drawer and never got rid of them.

After years, when the pandemic hit, I decided to get back into the hobby. The world was on pause, and I remembered how therapeutic crocheting is. I started creating again, but this time I shared it on my small platforms. Crochet wasn’t very popular in our generation during those times, but I received great feedback! With less than a P1k allowance, I invested in more yarn and started a page for my creations, turning it into a small business. That’s the foundation of where I am right now. Everything started from there, and I’m eternally grateful.

What’s the concept behind your business?

mmelc.ph is a pandemic baby. It was born from the ‘what if’ of a 17-year-old. We started with a one-woman team and have since grown to include student crocheters working with us. We specialize in selling garments made from knitted and crocheted textiles, with the majority of designs originating from my creative mind. We also cater to fellow crocheters by offering patterns for some of our designs. Patterns are essentially written tutorials on how to create specific items. mmelc.ph is a brand that emerged from a simple desire to share art. Today, it’s more than just a business; it’s a tradition and a lifestyle.

What was your biggest break?

It was way back in 2021 when we shared our own version of the crochet butterfly top. This beautiful gradient top features our outline that mimics butterfly wings. It became a global sensation, with orders pouring in from four corners of the globe. Not to mention the ongoing issue of our product pictures being stolen and shared without permission. Regardless, this design inspired numerous crocheters to create their own versions and even receive commissions for this handmade piece. It remains one of my most memorable breakthroughs.

When you’re creating countless looks for personalities, which project was your favorite and what was the experience like?

Catering to stars comes with its own set of hardships. We are a slow fashion brand, often working on rush orders to meet high demands, but BINI remains one of my favorite projects. I’m a strong advocate for women’s empowerment and supporting local artists. BINI is a group of incredibly talented women, and when Ica Villanueva, their stylist, approached mmelc.ph to create crochet pieces for them, I felt truly honored.

It was surreal to be part of performances I had only observed from a distance. My team and I crafted these pink crochet and knitted pieces for them, even giving birth to new looks. It was an iconic moment.

What was the inspiration behind the look?

While we had creative freedom for some pieces, BINI’s pink look inspiration was provided by their incredible stylist, Ica Villanueva. We carefully craft pieces based on stylist’s pegs and then witnessing them in action on stage or in photo shoots.

How did it feel when you started seeing your works on big platforms?

The excitement never stops. From creating the garments to today, even those around me unconsciously remind us of that moment. It still feels dreamlike, and I cherish these moments. One of my goals is to elevate wearable crochet to the level of clothing we see everywhere, whether it’s everyday wear or pieces for specific shoots and events. Collaborating with celebrities gives me hope that we can bring about this change with the help of their influence. Gratitude always remains at the forefront. Of course, it all boils down to the fangirl in me who never thought we would get this far.

What is your creative process like?

When I conceive a design, I sketch it right away. Visualizing everything is essential, and I learned this the hard way. Trust me, I’ve had numerous designs that went nowhere because I forgot about them. And when I create eyeballed and freehand pieces, I think of designs I’d personally love to wear—ones I’ve never seen before but believe are achievable. It could be something as simple as a tank top in my favorite color or a detailed dress with textured stitches.

I try to crochet every day, but I don’t pressure myself. Despite the prevalence of fast fashion, I remind myself that I have my own pace, my handmade art, and I’m not a factory. Also, a lot of iced coffee, tea, and pain relief patches – haha.

Could you share tips for anyone who wants to get into the business?

Starting a crochet business is a lesson rooted in experience. You’ll never know what it can become if you don’t give it a chance. Monetizing your hobby involves risk, but remember, you can always pivot or step back. Launching a small business means you become your own boss, so if it works out, you’ll look back with no regrets.

While many people have small businesses nowadays, don’t view them as competition. It’s easy to lose self-confidence when you constantly compare yourself to others. Set a goal and stay focused on it. No matter how many times you feel like giving up, you can adjust your approach, but never abandon the goal.

We have a wealth of learning resources available now, as almost everyone is engaged in e-commerce. This is the time to dream big. Keep creating, keep posting, and happy crocheting!

Here are all the things I wish I had known before saying goodbye to the comfort of homecooked meals, Sunday sing-alongs, and my childhood bedroom.

Leaving the comfort of your parents’ home and venturing into the world of independence is a significant milestone in life. Whether you’re off to college, launching your career, or setting out on a new adventure, moving out on your own is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

When you’re part of a Filipino household, you may consider yourself fortunate to head out in the first place. I was no exception, as my life seemed to be neatly packed into balikbayan boxes the moment I had the opportunity. But still, as exciting as it can be, moving our of your parents’ home can be a rollercoaster ride of emotions. If you’re planning to move out soon, here are all the things to take into account. I know I wish I had known these before saying goodbye to the comforts of home-cooked meals, Sunday sing-alongs, and my childhood bedroom, in exchange for the freedom of having my personal space.

Lesson no. 1: It’s Not ‘For Free’

Now, that paycheck you receive is no longer meant for splurging on late-night online shopping sprees. It’s time to realize that maintaining the cozy life you were accustomed to demands extra effort and financial responsibility. If you’re moving out, prioritize appliances, bathroom essentials, and groceries over those Pinterest-worthy posters and tiny trinkets.

That bed you sleep on, the fridge full of goodies, and the utensils you used back home – none of it appeared for free. All the responsibility now falls on you. The moment you officially step into adulthood, it dawns on you that every item in your home has been purchased and paid for. It may sound obvious, but the reality does hit like a truck. It’s funny because this was the first lesson I learned after moving out. Honestly, how didn’t it click that I had to snag some furniture for myself?

Lesson no. 2: Bills on the Kitchen Counter

Speaking of financial decisions, let’s talk about the dreaded arrival of bills and pending payments. Electricity, rent, water—those envelopes with your name on will start spreading on the kitchen counter. And when you’re keeping track of due dates, math suddenly becomes a go-to subject.

Now, no longer relying on our parents to make those pesky payments disappear is another lesson learned. I guess it’s one of those rites of adulthood. On the brighter side, think of this as proof that you can manage your life, make smart choices, and master the art of adulting.

Lesson no. 3: You’re Not Saying Goodbye to Cleaning and Chores

I recall thinking to myself that I’m free from ‘mga utos ni mama.’ Here’s the plot twist: you will find yourself with more chores. Sure, you’re finally doing your dishes whenever you want and probably hitting the laundromat from time to time, but adulthood doesn’t come with a ‘get-out-of-chores-free’ card. If you could say ‘wait lang‘ back then, you can’t say goodbye to cleaning and chores this time around.

Your newfound independence means that the responsibilities of maintaining a clean and organized space rest on your shoulders. It’s not always about freedom; this lesson teaches you the value of self-sufficiency and taking pride in your personal space.

Lesson no. 4: Sometimes, You’re Not a ‘Strong Independent Woman’, And That’s Okay

When we often hear the phrase ‘strong, independent woman’ proudly resonating, you will learn that you’re not always Miss Independent once you’re out of the family home. From being a working student, supporting myself through college, and moving out at 22, I used to think I could do everything alone—now, not anymore.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still strong for getting this far, but there are days when you will need your mom for comfort or your dad to protect you. I remember crying because I built a cabinet for my high heels, and I had nobody with me. Before moving far from home, condition your mind that there are times when we grapple with uncertainty, self-doubt, and the need for support which we can’t get 24/7. Yes, even when you’re at your lowest.

It’s essential to recognize that seeking help, whether it’s emotional, financial, or practical, doesn’t diminish your independence or strength. Being a ‘strong, independent woman’ doesn’t mean doing everything alone; it’s a reminder that it’s perfectly normal to lean on others from time to time when you have people who are willing to help.

Lesson no. 5: Mouse Moments

The newfound sense of freedom means hanging out with friends whenever you like, doing things on your own terms, and finally having your personal space. It’s exciting and all that but nobody stops to think about having dinner alone and these seemingly mundane moments that can suddenly influence your transition to a new way of life.

When you might think you’re alone now, the truth is you’re on your own—and that’s a beautiful thing. These mouse moments allow you to discover yourself, develop self-reliance, and appreciate being your own best companion. While the thrill of newfound independence is invigorating, always remember to savor these instances of solitude that accompany it.

Lesson no. 6: You Will Miss Out Most of the Time

When you finally move out, the initial rush of independence is looking out for everything that’s in front of you that you forget what you’re leaving behind. In the hustle and bustle of this new chapter of life, one hard-hitting lesson stands out—you’re going to miss out on a lot. Whether it’s your family’s fur baby or the daily check-ins with your parents, FOMO becomes a regular visitor in your room. You find yourself scrolling through social media, seeing snapshots of those gatherings, celebrations, and brunches you couldn’t attend, and the small pang of regret stings.

But here’s the kicker: this lesson teaches you that sometimes, missing out is all part of adulting. It’s about prioritizing responsibilities, making sacrifices, and understanding that there’s a bigger picture at play. You’ll miss out most of the time, but that’s just the trade-off for the adventures and personal growth that come with independence. After all, you’re doing this for yourself.

Lesson no. 7: You Will Finally Think That Your Parents are ‘Right’

After moving out of your parents’ home, there’s a moment when you pause, reflect, and realize that, perhaps for the first time, they were right all along. Their advice, which may have seemed outdated, suddenly starts making sense. Whether it’s the insistence on budgeting, the importance of a well-balanced diet, or those curfews that felt like an imposition, you begin to realize and appreciate the reason behind the nagging. It’s a realization that will bring a smile to your face as you recognize the love and concern that drove their well-intentioned advice. Like, you wouldn’t be here without them.
