The year 2023 has seen plenty of Filipino excellence make waves both locally and internationally. From Maria Clara at Ibarra to A Very Good Girl, local productions have been present, diverse, and well-received—as they should! Filipino filmmakers and stars are raring to tell unique stories and share them with the world, proving that Philippine TV and cinema are well and alive as new genres, stars, and stories make their way to local and international screens. There’s no slowing down, much less stopping, for the art and these artists, and there’s no shortage of people wholeheartedly willing to champion Philippine cinema and production.

If you haven’t had enough of local media, or if you’re looking for something new to love, these seven upcoming and highly-anticipated Filipino movies and series will fill your October with enough drama, horror, comedy, and romance to tide you over.

SPARKLE U (OCTOBER 1)

GMA’s new youth-oriented anthology series features the freshest and up-and-coming young stars of GMA’s talent agency Sparkle Center. Sparkle U, set in the fictional Sparkle University, touches on the problems and issues faced by the youth of today, from social media to school hierarchies. The series’ first installment, #Frenemies, stars Shayne Sava as Bekang, a teenager who, along with other average students, save Yazzi (Roxie Smith) the popular girl at their school. Sparkle U airs October 1 on GMA’s Sunday Grande sa Gabi.

KEYS TO THE HEART (OCTOBER 4)

Starring Zanjoe Marudo, Dolly de Leon, Elijah Canlas, and more, Keys to the Heart is a Philippine adaptation of 2018 Korean dramedy of the same name. Marudo stars as Joma, a washed-up boxer who comes home to his long-lost family and finds out he has a gifted pianist brother, Jayjay, on the autism spectrum. The film will be released on Netflix on October 4.

LINLANG (OCTOBER 5)

Linlang is an upcoming ABS-CBN drama series starring Paulo Avelino, Kim Chiu, JM De Guzman, and Maricel Soriano. The series revolves around dirty lies, secrets, jealousy, and betrayal in relationships. Linlang airs on Prime Video starting October 5.

IN MY MOTHER’S SKIN (OCTOBER 12)

This folk horror film written and directed by Kenneth Dagatan is set in World War II and features a young girl, Tala, who tries to save her troubled family by turning to a suspicious, flesh-eating fairy for help. In My Mother’s Skin premiered at Sundance Film Festival and has since appeared in more than 10 international film festivals. Lauded for its macabre horror and unique story, this film is worth a watch on Prime Video starting October 12.

CAN’T BUY ME LOVE (OCTOBER 13)

DonBelle’s much-awaited first primetime teleserye Can’t Buy Me Love stars Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano as Bingo and Caroline, respectively, who come from very different backgrounds but are brought together when Bingo saves Caroline from a kidnapping attempt. The series airs October 13 on Netflix, October 14 on iWantTFC, and October 16 on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, Jeepney TV, TFC, A2Z, and TV5.

FIVE BREAKUPS AND A ROMANCE (OCTOBER 18)

Superstars Julia Montes and Alden Richards show off chemistry and their well-honed acting chops in their first romantic drama together, Five Break-Ups and A Romance. In the film, Montes plays the driven Justine Royales across Richards’ optimistic Lance Sandoval. Tackling the complexities of relationships in this day and age, Five Breakups and a Romance is coming to cinemas October 18 and promises an emotional rollercoaster of a love story with a large heaping of charm.

ROOKIE (OCTOBER 19)

Hit WLW film Rookie directed by Samantha Lee and starring Pat Tingjuy and Aya Fernandez made waves at Cinemalaya Film Festival 2023 for its depiction of a volleyball-themed love story where queerness is the norm. Rookie tells the story of Ace, a new student in a Catholic school, who’s encouraged to try out for the school’s volleyball team, where she meets Jana, the team captain. They form a friendship and find love in this sweet coming-of-age rom-com.

If you’re not already aware, there’s a trend on TikTok where people ask their male partners “How often do you think of the Roman Empire?” because for some reason, the answer is rarely “never.” Now people are saying that an equivalent of the Roman Empire question is “How often do you think about your ex-best friend?” Go ahead, ask the question to your friends. The look on their faces will tell you everything you need to know.

The widespread relatability of the question implies that so many of us have undergone the loss of a friendship and it still lives rent-free in our minds regardless of how it ended. And as we are aware, losing a friendship is often just as heartbreaking as a breakup, if not more. Best friends Kaori Oinuma and Vivoree Esclito were not safe from this very human experience, and while their friendship is standing strong today, it’s because it’s built on lessons they’ve learned before.

IT’S OKAY TO BE VULNERABLE

In her experiences with friendship, singer-actress Vivoree chooses to move on, but has also learned that it’s perfectly okay to feel hurt and be vulnerable. After all, losing a friendship is still losing something or someone that you valued for a certain amount of time.

“Growing up,” she shares. “I didn’t give myself freedom to feel any heartbreak…Parang natatakot ako masaktan.”

If she felt that there were certain friends that are sort of drifting away, Vivoree just lets them go. “Iniisip ko na lang na maybe hanggang doon na lang yung friendship natin.”

But she admits that if a friendship were to end now that she’s older, she really would be heartbroken. “I’m gonna let myself feel the heartbreak.” Pushing emotions away is often easier than letting yourself acknowledge and feel the pain. That’s why the “how often do you think of your ex-best friend?” question hits a little hard—because while we often think about a friend we lost, how often do we really process what happened and how we feel about it?

Now, Vivoree has learned that “It’s okay to feel pain, to feel vulnerable, kasi we’re all just human beings.”

ACCEPT THINGS AS THEY ARE, FOCUS ON THE GOOD

Young actress Kaori recounted her own story about friendship breakups—when her one friend in Japan suddenly cut her off and stopped talking to her completely for seemingly no reason. As a young girl who didn’t know much Japanese yet, she relied on a friend who helped her with the language and their lessons in school. But one day, the friend ghosted her completely, making her feel even more isolated.

“Out of nowhere, one day, bigla na lang na lang siyang lumalayo sa’kin.” Kaori wondered what was happening, and even thought about the possibility of other people influencing her friend to stay away from her because she was a foreigner in Japan.

“Ang ginawa ko was tanggapin…inaccept ko ‘yung nangyari.” At some point, Kaori did try to reach out to the friend and asked them how they were doing, but she no longer tried to rebuild the friendship.

“Natakot na ko na nagawa mo na once, [so] mayroong possibility na magawa mo siya ulit.”

Kaori learned then, she shared with LionHeartTV, that some people really do just leave your life, but others come in and make it better, too. She also shared with NYLON that you don’t need to overthink too much if a friendship isn’t made or lost. Kaori moved on with her life and found better, more loyal and trustworthy friends—like Vivoree!

“Magla-last yung friendship namin,” Vivoree reassures. “’Di kami mag-iiwanan.”

DonBelle brings the drama and the romance to primetime with their upcoming teleserye Can’t Buy Me Love, airing on October 13! We already can’t wait for the show to air.

Action, drama, and a whole lot of romance are in store for Bubblies and soon-to-be-Bubblies starting October 13! Can’t Buy Me Love, the upcoming teleserye starring Gen Z icons Belle Mariano and Donny Pangilinan, dropped its full trailer last Monday. The highly-anticipated primetime series looks to be an exciting romp filled with thrills and suspense, love and laughs, and of course, that classic DonBelle charm.

In the trailer, also seen in the series’ previous teaser, Caroline (Mariano) seems to be abducted by unknown men and left to drown, but Bingo (Pangilinan) saves her. She assumes he’s the one who kidnapped her, but eventually warms up to him, and so starts their unorthodox relationship. Quick scenes show Caroline and Bingo’s respective struggles with family and the treacherous road ahead involving deaths, dangers, and secrets—one that they’ll traverse together. It’s definitely something new from the couple—a love story tackling different cultures, crime, and an unusual first meeting between leads helmed by Mae Cruz Alviar, Cathy Garcia-Sampana, and Ian D. Loreños.

THE STORY OF CAROLINE AND BINGO

Belle Mariano’s Caroline Tiu is a wealthy daughter from a traditional Chinese family with a tumultuous relationship with her sister, and Donny Pangilinan’s Bingo Rivera is a young man working hard to provide for his family. The harm that befalls Caroline—her kidnapping and almost-drowning—we can assume is caused by her family’s wealth. Meanwhile, the trouble Bingo gets into, which is perhaps connected to Caroline’s problems, is caused by his own family’s lack of money to afford healthcare.

Caroline and Bingo meet at Caroline’s sister’s engagement party, where Bingo is working as a waiter. The stark contrast between Caroline’s high-society lifestyle and Bingo’s financial struggles paves the way for the series to explore the tensions between people of different class backgrounds and the lengths people go through to obtain money. It’s a fresh take on a tried-and-true trope that looks to rattle plenty of emotions from the audience.

A NEW ADVENTURE FOR DONBELLE

The phenomenal Gen Z loveteam DonBelle has made many root for their romance both on and off-screen since they were first paired up in teen series He’s Into Her (2021-2022). Since then, they’ve worked on rom-coms Love is Colorblind (2021) and An Inconvenient Love (2022).

Can’t Buy Me Love is their first foray into primetime television, and is a new challenge for the pair. However, throughout their different projects, DonBelle has shown that they can act with heart and do comedy, drama, and romance like nobody’s business. And whatever screen they’re on, their chemistry straight-up leaps out of it, as shown in the 2-minute trailer, so it’ll be exciting to see what they do with Caroline and Bingo. And further solidifying DonBelle’s first teleserye as a TV moment, the show will premiere on Netflix on October 13, a full three days before it airs on TV.

Can’t Buy Me Love also features a star-studded cast that includes Ruffa Gutierrez, Maris Racal, Albie Casiño, Nova Villa, Agot Isidro, Enzo Pineda, Rowell Santiago, Vivoree Esclito, Darren Espanto, Celeste Legaspi, Kaila Estrada, Karina Bautista, and Joao Costancia. Just from the trailer, we learn that the storyline is set to have many twists and turns, the production is grand and immersive, and that DonBelle is embarking on a thrilling new chapter.

Billie Eilish’s partnership with Nike is the gift that keeps on giving. And in 2023, she gave us another one with the reintroduction of the Nike Air Alpha Force 88. The 80s silhouette comes in two colorways, the first being the one Michael Jordan wore in January 1988 at a game against the New York Knicks, which was where the shoe made its debut, as well as a Black/White option. Keeping in line with Billie and Nike’s advocacy for environmentalism, the fly kicks are made with sustainable and recycled materials.

Uniqlo is no stranger to getting social media talking with their special collections, like partnering with Spy x Family and Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 for UT collections. But their crossover with Studio Ghibli may just be one of their best this year. The 26-piece collection, which was made in collaboration with Thai artist Kanyada Phatan, ranges from tees, shirts, and accessories and incorporates the animation studio’s iconic characters and designs. Even their viral mini shoulder bags get new variants with Totoro and Catbus designs. Sleek, stylish, and nostalgic, Uniqlo x Studio Ghibli gave what needed to be given.

NEWJEANS X POWERPUFF GIRLS

In hindsight, NewJeans partnering with The Powerpuff Girls for the cartoon’s 25th anniversary made all kinds of sense. But when the two announced the collab during the group’s comeback, many were left gagged. Aside from transforming NewJeans into their own Powerpuff Girls for their New Jeans music video, the collab also included a collection for Line Friends that included, among other things, key chains, phone cases, caps, and shirts.

NewJeans really gave the childhood-favorite cartoon a Gen Z makeover, and we’re here for it. If you want to cop the collection for yourself, you can visit the NewJeans x Play Line Friends pop-up on the 5th floor of Mega Fashion Hall at SM Megamall. They’ll be there until December 23, 2023.

FENTY X PUMA

Before there was Fenty Beauty, there was FENTY X PUMA. Rihanna lowkey helped change the game with her collections with PUMA from 2015 to 2018. And this 2023, the superstar returns as the Creative Director of FENTY x PUMA with a multi-year partnership and several product launches in the pipeline First up on the list is the FENTY x PUMA Avanti, an unconventional mix of two PUMA icons blending the high-quality leather design of the King football boot with the outsole of the heritage running shoe, Easy Rider.

The shoes have buttery soft vintage leather, a fold-over tongue with a debossed and printed gold-foil FENTY, and a PUMA CAT logo. With a gum outsole and leather footbed, the details of the Avanti nod to PUMA’s deep history and heritage in the sport of football. The black and white version is complimented by a chrome execution with laser-etched logos and leather chrome details. Aside from online, limited pairs are available at PUMA’s EDSA Shangri-la store.

Earlier this year, Netflix tapped Lacoste for a special collection that reimagined the sportswear brand’s green crocodile through the lens of the streaming services’ biggest shows. Polos, sweatshirts, tracksuits, caps, and more were given the Netflix treatment as eight shows, such as Stranger Things, Bridgerton, and The Witcher, made their way onto the French brand’s silhouettes and everyday wear. She even walked in one of their shows. 2023 took Dua’s partnership with the fashion house to a new level when she and Donatella Versace co-designed a collection called La Vacanaza. True to its name, this Dua x Versace team-up is all about living your best life during a vacation at all times, as exemplified by the pieces ranging from gowns to beachwear. The collection also has a vintage aspect to it, with the looks harkening to Versace staples such as metallics, butterflies, and polka-dot designs.

In an announcement that had Filipino fans talking on social media, the Manila Pop Culture Convention, which is set to take place this November 17-19 at Ayala Malls Manila Bay, revealed that Mackenyu is traveling to the country to attend the convention as well as meet his Pinoy fans.

As far as we know, this will be the first time Mackenyu has been to the country, so it’ll be exciting to see what he can get on his itinerary. While the entrance is free to ManiPopCon, getting up close to the actor is going to cost, with an autograph costing 5,500 pesos, a photo with him at 6,000 pesos, and the VIP experience at 12,000 pesos. Manila Pop Culture Convention 2023 is coming to Ayala Malls Manila Bay from November 17 to 19 to celebrate all things fun and geeky! Here’s what to expect.

One Piece star Mackenyu made headlines recently when he was announced as the headliner for ManiPopCon, or the Manila Pop Culture Convention 2023, an upcoming gathering and convention of geeks, gamers, and pop culture enthusiasts in Manila. At the convention, Mackenyu will have a solo panel, meet and greet, and special photo op and autograph sessions the weekend of November 17 to 19. Other special guests are also slated to attend the event, like actresses Diana Lee Inosanto and Mela Lee.

Tickets for Mackenyu’s special events are being sold here, but even if you don’t manage to score one, don’t worry—you can still catch a glimpse of him at the convention!

ManiPopCon promises all sorts of geeky fun. And the best part? Entrance is FREE! But there will be a ticketing system, so stay tuned to their website and social media accounts to secure your tickets. Special events and VIP experiences like Mackenyu’s meet and greet have separate ticket prices, which are a little pricey, but hopefully it’s worth it. THE RISE OF CONVENTIONS

As with any other events that involve social gatherings like concerts or even movies, conventions have reached new peaks after the worst of the pandemic ended. From Comic-Cons to Sticker Cons, people are gathering to shop, sell, play games, cosplay, bond, and just have fun with their fellow enthusiasts.

Of course, there’s much to learn with conventions’ growing popularity and the changing times. Tech and gaming convention CONQuest 2023 back in June “turned into a nightmare” after failed logistics, incredibly long lines and waiting times, and scams, among other issues. Social media was on fire after attendees and vendors alike voiced out their concerns with the event. After, the organizers apologized and refunded the tickets of those unable to enter the venue.

Moreover, there was a Manila Pop Culture Convention back in 2019, which unfortunately faced some criticism related to poor planning and logistics.

So, clearly it’s not enough to just want to bring people, games, media, vendors, and merchandise together under one roof to explore passions and niches. There’s a lot of expectations to be met, work to be done, and issues to be addressed. ManiPopCon seems to want to deliver a well-executed event, so here’s hoping this year’s convention will turn out better to allow all the artists, gamers, cosplayers, and geeks abound to have a grand time celebrating all things pop culture.

ALL THE GEEKY GOODNESS

ManiPopCon is said to be “a safe space to cosplay, meet other geeks, gather collectibles, play with opponents, and meet special celebrities within the geek community.” They promise Filipino movie classics, nostalgia and thrills, toys and collectibles, streaming stars, anime, comics, games and tournaments, and so much more.

There’s also sure to be booths that offer a wide array of merchandise, fanart, collectibles, and knick-knacks attendees can stock up on to show their love for their specific niches of geekhood. ManiPopCon recently opened up a call for exhibitors, which means people can promote their art or brand to a wide audience of convention-goers. There are three tiers of varying benefits and prices. Plus, there’s a lot more for them to announce, but the hype is real.

Bestie, wake up! Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour movie is showing in the Philippines beginning this October 13. It’s time to get ready.

October 13, 2023 is not just a regular Friday. To Swifties around the world, it may as well be a global holiday, with the Eras Tour movie hitting cinemas in over 100 countries simultaneously. And yes, that includes the Philippines. SM Cinemas and Ayala Malls Cinemas will be screening the concert on screens around the country, with SM showing it on October 13-15, 19-22, 26-29, and November 2-5, and Ayala Malls having their showings on October 13-15 and 19-22.

Given the heartbreak of the Eras Tour skipping the Philippines and only hitting Singapore and Japan next year, the concert film is the chance for Pinoy Swifites to see Taylor’s massive tour if they weren’t able to secure tickets abroad. And given how both SM and Ayala Malls websites went down at the start of ticket selling, the hype is real. As we’re just a couple of weeks away from the concert’s screenings, here are a few things you can do so that you can live your best Swifite life at the cinema.

MAKE THE FRIENDSHIP BRACELETS

While it isn’t the actual concert, nothing is stopping you from making the mood feel like one. So, get those friendship bracelets ready and trade some with your fellow Swifties at the cinemas. From the “1,2,3 let’s go bitch” at the start of Delicate to asking Taylor where she’s going during the first pre-chorus of Bejeweled, the show has a lot of cues for fans to participate in. So, brush up on the to-do moments and make the cinema feel even more like an actual show. While Taylor can’t hear you do them, we have a strong feeling she’ll love seeing her fans do them in the cinema.

For many, the Eras Tour showing in cinemas will be the best chance they get to watch the actual tour (aside from TikTok lives, of course).
