Here for the pop girls.

When Fred Jzeidric made Main Pop Girls Stanposting, the Facebook community turned into a hive of pop, memes, and a dash of politics.

Before, if fans of a certain artist wanted to connect with one another, they would have to do so in person. But thanks to the internet, and in particular social media, fandoms have now gone online. Online fandoms are abundant across social media and you won’t have to look far to come across at least one stan account. And when it comes to stanning, few fandoms match that when it comes to pop music. Female pop stars like Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande are known to have fandoms so fierce they can give K-pop fandoms a run for their money. Social media is filled with pages, groups, and accounts that are dedicated to talking about their faves.

Fred Jzeidric was one such fan, or should we say stan, who follows and loves pop girls with a passion. This passion led him to create the Main Pop Girls page followed by the Main Pop Girls Stanposting group. You may not be part of the group, but you probably have come across one of it’s many viral posts on social media. NYLON Manila recently chatted with Fred, the college student from Tarlac who started it all, on how Main Pop Girls Stanposting came to be and his thoughts on how it became the cultural force that it is.

BEGINNINGS OF A POP STAN

Fred’s love for pop music took it’s root during his childhood days in elementary school. “When Myx: Daily Top Ten was still a thing when we were in elementary school, I developed an interest in female pop artists. I remember rooting for Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and the Pussycat Dolls to reach the number one spot every day. Since then, I’ve started exploring and watching YouTube videos about legendary female musicians such as Madonna, Cher, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and Whitney Houston.”

Artpop - Wikipedia

“I grew up listening to one of the best eras in pop music, which included Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, and Taylor Swift,” Fred shares with NYLON Manila. He credits Taylor Swift in particular for being his first musical icon. “Her lyrics are profound, and her music has a strong connection with me. I’ve been captivated by her journey since her debut and have gained so much knowledge from her, not only through her music but also as a person. Taylor always stands up for women’s rights and rallies for positive change in the industry, whether it’s against her ex-boyfriends, other male musicians, or misogynistic label reps.”

Though the Princess of Pop herself Britney Spears holds a special place in his heart. “Britney Spears was a game-changer who dared to try things that no one else would. She revolutionized pop music and changed people’s perceptions of what it meant to be an entertainer.”

MAIN POP GIRLS STANPOSTING’S DEBUT

Fred eventually took his stanning to social media and joined Stan Twitter. It was at this time that he also created the Main Pop Girls in Facebook. “I’d talk about how a particular female artist is superior to others—who had more Grammy awards, number one hits, or other notable accomplishments.” But like with the toxicity we sometimes see when it comes to talking about female pop stars on the internet, Fred, for a time, found himself using his accounts to drag other artists. That was until he changed his ways. “I eventually realized that comparing female artists was toxic and not ideal. I realized that there is enough room in pop music for women to express their individuality and artistry to the rest of the world. I’m grateful I’ve outgrown of this phase, and I now celebrate all the music they serve for us.”

For a while, it was just Fred, the Main Pop Girls FB page, and its followers. Over time, they built a niche community for themselves in the corner of Facebook. But soon, the clamor for a more interactive group led to the creation of Main Pop Girls Stanposting. “My page’s followers requested it, so I decided to create [Main Pop Girls Stanposting]. We began as a small meme group parodying popular culture with Filipino content.”

In case you haven’t heard of the group, Main Pop Girls Stanposting is a public Facebook group where members are free to discuss all things related to the pop girls. Often, the members are stans of certain artists who are ready to spread the gospel of their fave or just people who just love pop music in general. According to Fred, he would describe a Main Pop Girl as “a female artist who has achieved legendary status in the music industry or has made notable achievements throughout her career. The Main Pop Girls are widely regarded as the rulers of pop music in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, and Rihanna are among them.” As for Stanposting, it’s a mix of the word stan for obvious reasons and posting “because it is catchy and trendy in Facebook groups.”

POP MEETS POLITICS

One thing the group is also known for is combining pop culture with that of Filipino culture to create memes and other content that have on occasion gone viral on Facebook. But aside from the fun, parodies, and memes, the group also has space to discuss more social issues. “I also projected it to be a social group for female artist fandoms where we could discuss and support not only their music but also their personal struggles. We speak out against the mistreatment of our favorite artists daily. Britney Spears’ conservatorship, Kesha’s case against Dr. Luke, and Taylor Swift’s master’s controversy are among the issues covered.”

And true to that female pop stars and pop culture isn’t the only thing you can find in Main Pop Girls Stanposting. During and even after the 2022 elections, the group was a hive for political discourse. Scrolling through the group, you would be hard pressed to not find a post discussing politics. It got to the point where Fred had to ban members from talking about it, which has since been lifted. But while some might think that politics in a group called Main Pop Girls Stanposting might seem off, pop and politics actually go well together.

“It is no surprise to me that our group page became one of the most political groups on Facebook during the 2022 elections. Main Pop Girls have always been political. I’m talking about Katy Perry promoting activism and then releasing Chained To The Rhythm; Taylor Swift challenging societal sexist double standards with the song The Man and empowering youth with her song Only The Young, Lady Gaga standing up for LGBT with Born This Way. Beyoncé speaking out against racism, police brutality, and empowering women of color with her song Formation.”

While the group’s endorsed candidate did not win, Fred does not regret the role the group played in the elections. “I’m proud to say that my group once fought for what we believe is right, and that I was once a part of a big and historic social movement.” And of course, when it comes to voicing support for just causes, that includes support for the LGBTQIA+ community. “Lady Gaga did not write Born This Way for no reason. It is important to support, uplift, and fight for the LGBTQIA+ community every day! I believe that Inclusivity, diversity, and allyship are so important in every aspect of society.”

FROM COMMUNITY TO ONLINE CITY

Fred never imagined that Main Pop Girls Stanposting turning into the cultural magnet that it would become. But the page is a proverbial main stay in Pinoy internet pop culture discourse. Many Main Pop Girls Stanposting group pages have been set up and taken down by Facebook for a variety of reasons. But just like how pop stars are primmed for their next reinvention, more pages pop up. The current Main Pop Girls Stanposting page was established in January 2022 and has ballooned from small community to city sixed well over 740,000 members. It’s influence extends further a search of Main Pop Girls on Facebook reveals multiple copycat pages as well as other pages dedicated to talking about male pop stars.

“I was genuinely surprised when it even reached 10,000 members,” he expressed. “I had no idea we could reach so many people in this way. Facebook has taken down multiple Main Pop Girls Stanposting group pages. But I believe my members and I have a strong bond, and they always come back for some reason. They continue to support me and believe in my leadership. We are now at 720,000 and counting, and I know it will continue to grow.”

THE DARK SIDE TO POP FANDOM

As the sole admin of Main Pop Girls Stanposting, Fred’s responsibilities include changing the description, tags, and settings of the groups, including the privacy setting. With a group whose size is as big as that of Pasig City, things can get out of hand. This is why he has two moderators, Prince and Shanie, to help him clean up the content in the group. But despite, or maybe because of this, there has been some tension between Fred and the group’s many members. Some accuse him of deleting their posts, censorship, and even blocking them from the page entirely. “I’ve never been able to dictate members’ statements or most of their actions. I can only monitor the community page and do everything I can to reduce the harmful posts and comments.”

Social media will always have its trolls and with a page that big, it will be inevitable that Fred will encounter them. Tring to remove them though hasn’t always been an easy process. “There are instances where people expect me to be in full control. But there are some things over which I have no power. The only way I can get rid of the trolls from the group is to use Facebook Group features like admin Assist, Report Tab, and Keywords.”

Fred admits that dealing with the stress of running such a large group has not been easy on him, especially when he gets hate comments on social media. “When things become more chaotic, I tend to panic. I admit that I am not the best at dealing with hateful remarks and harsh criticism. I wish people to understand that my world does not revolve around the group. I’m also a human being, and I have a life outside of social media, as well as other responsibilities.”

He also wants it to make it known that his decision for the group are always grounded in what’s best for it. “I have always chosen what is best for the majority and will continue to do so. Whenever there are topics and issues in the group that I disapprove of, I raise awareness and make announcements, hoping that my members will listen to me.” He adds, “I’ve always managed Facebook groups by trial and error, and I think I’ve finally cracked the code. It is to listen to my members.”

When the going does get tough, Fred likes to look to his pop queens for support. “When I’m having a panic attack over managing the group, I tell myself that if Britney Spears made it through 2007, I can make it through anything. Then I listen to powerful dance hits like Shake It Off, Fireworks, Diamonds, Starships, Rain On Me, or whatever song I want to dance to.”

A TOOL FOR GOOD

But despite all the personal struggles and hardships Fred may face when it comes to running the group, he still finds joy in it. It hits deeper knowing that the group has been used for good, instead of just talking about the pop girls. “Although everyone enjoys memes, I personally appreciate the fact that our group can help those in need. I never imagined that we could raise money for families who are at their lowest point. Several people have recently approached me to thank me for promoting their posts to a wider audience. It’s been a very beautiful experience for me, and I hope that my platform can help more people.”

May be an image of 2 people and text that says 'my friend and i giving each other love advice'

At the end of the day, come what may, he hopes to see Main Pop Girls Stanposting be used as a community and forum to uplift all the female musicians and a safe space for people to share what they love.

“I’d like to see Main Pop Girls Stanposting expand and support more female musicians from the next generation of pop stars, such as Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish. I’ll always want it to be a social space where any fan in the world may find comfort and entertainment. Although I am aware that Main Pop Girls Stanposting will come to an end at some point, whether Facebook will disable it or whether I will archive it, I want the group to be recognized as a catalyst for change. I want it to be remembered as part of every fan’s childhood and make them feel nostalgic as if they are listening to a Britney Spears song.”

Here’s What To Expect At The NYLON Manila Big Bold Brave Awards Night

line
One ticket for the NYLON Manila Big Bold Brave Awards Night Party please.

Premiere night is almost here with the NYLON Manila Big Bold Brave Awards Night and party happening on June 24.

When we launched Big Bold Brave Awards: The Sequel in May, we imagined it as a celebration where fans come together to vote for their most worthy faves to win their respective category. Across 15 categories, we highlighted and heroed names, faces, brands, and more who have been or should be on everyone’s radar this past year. And with the theme of the sequel, we imagined it all through the lenses of a bigger, better, braver, and bolder movie sequel that was worth the price of admission. And true enough, that exactly what happened.

Hundreds of thousands of fans went on our website and voted for their picks on our website polls. Over the course of two weeks, more than 20 millions votes were cast across the board, making it our biggest internet milestone to date. If the Big Bold Brave Awards 2022 were a movie, it would have been a box office smash to say the least. And with an event as big as this, it was only fair that we celebrated the winners and all those who made the awards what it was through a grand, fun flair. This is why we’re celebrating the night away with the NYLON Manila Big Bold Brave Awards Night and party on June 24.

A NIGHT FOR CELEBRATION

The Big Bold Brave Awards Night is the culmination of the whole event and our way to celebrate the winners, acknowledge the nominees, thank the fans, and have the best movie night possible. Like with the main event, the awards night party will stick with the theme of the sequel. Movie trailers and free popcorn are just some of the things to expect at the hottest premiere night in town.

The night’s festivities will of course include an awarding ceremony where each winner will take home a custom made trophy. Watch out, because they will also be given the opportunity to say a few words to thank you, the fans, for the love and support. There will also be a few performances throughout the night from some of the hottest young artists in the music scene. And there might even be a special surprise coming at the end of the show. The night will then be capped off with a specially curated DJ set where guests can hit the dance floor and party till their heart’s content.

BIGGER, BOLDER, BRAVER

As we are going bigger, bolder, and braver, the dress code of the night will be a reflection of this. Guests are expected to show up in looks that scream Big and Bold. Oversized fits, maximalist silhouettes, and even some baring of skin are all part of the dress code. Keeping things plain and simple is not what the Big Bold Brave Awards Night is about. Those in attendance are highly encouraged to experiment, express themselves, show up, and show out. And speaking of looks, it won’t just be the nominees who will be taking home awards for the night. Among the guests, we will also be naming a Best Beauty Look as presented by BYS.

Now, some of you may be wondering, who’s going? Well, we won’t be revealing the guest list here as we don’t want to spoil the fun. But rest assured that all the nominees and winners have been invited as the guest list is a who’s who of young stars and personalities who have been killing it in their respective fields.

So, get your snacks, sit back, relax, and enjoy the movie. Make sure to follow NYLON Manila on Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram for real time updates of the event. You can also join in on the fun by using the official hashtag #NYLONManilaBBBNight.

The Lady Bulldogs Sweep Their Way To NU’s First UAAP Women’s Volleyball Championship In 65 Years

Undefeated queens.

With the help of star players like Bella Belen, Alyssa Solomon, and Jennifer Nierva, the NU Lady Bulldogs ended their long drought to clinch the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Championship.

Ending droughts seem to be a running theme this UAAP Season 84. For starters, the season marked the return of the UAAP in over two years. Back in May, the UP Diliman Men’s Basketball Team made history when they defeated the presumed frontrunners, the Ateneo Blue Eagles, to score UP’s first championship win in decades. And now, another long-running drought has ended as the National University Lady Bulldogs completed a phenomenal season to sweep NU’s first volleyball championship in 65 years.

65 YEARS IN THE MAKING

The moment NU began their journey in Season 84, it was very much clear that they were a team to beat. Their first match against Adamson showcased how the rookies on the team were young juggernauts ready to fuel the team to victory. Going up against the La Salle Lady Spikers in the finals wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. But the excellence NU displayed this whole season was on full force as they defeated La Salle for a second time in a best of three games to take home the championship win.

The Lady Bulldogs scored 25-15, 25-15,  25-22 in game two after defeating the Lady Spikers in a dominant 25-20, 25-12, 25-21 in game one. And just like that, NU went 16-0 with all their games this season, making this the third time in history that a team in UAAP Women’s Volleyball swept all their games (in case you’re curious, the first two were La Salle and Ateneo). Their championship win served as their first win since 1957. Chances are, some of the parents of the players weren’t even born yet at the time. But 65 years later, the glory has returned to NU.

ALL-STAR TEAM

The Lady Bulldogs were a team to beat since the beginning and that’s helped by the fact that they have a core group of star players who dominated in the season. There is, of course, Bella Belen who capped off her other worldly rookie season with 16 points in game two of the finals. She also made history as the first ever player in the UAAP to take home Season MVP and Rookie of the Year at the same time. Bella also bagged the 1st Best Outside Hitter award. Young legends behavior really as a star was undoubtedly born.

Fellow rookie Alyssa Solomon scored a game high of 18 points and took home Best Opposite Spiker. Ivy Lacsina followed the two girls with 8 points bagged. Jennifer Nierva recorded 19 digs and 10 receptions as well as the 1st Best Libero award. Lams Lamina got Best Setter while Sheena Toring got 2nd Best Middle Blocker. As for team captain Princess Robles, she scored six points and 15 digs, and was named Finals MVP, a deserving recognition if we do say so ourselves.

The cherry on top for NU is the fact that all but two awards given during the individual awarding ceremony went to NU players (La Salle’s Thea Gagate got 1st Best Middle Blocker while ADMU’s Faith Nisperos got 2nd Best Outside Hitter). Meanwhile, all seven athletes who got awards were products of the NU high school’s famed volleyball program.

A 16-0 sweep, first championship win, snatching most of the top awards, and introducing us to a new generation of volleyball stars, it was very much a fairytale ending for the NU Lady Bulldogs. Congratulations, girls!

RAMENGVRL Is The IDGAF Indonesian Rapper That Should Be On Everyone’s Lips

line
She quite her corporate job and became a rap star. No big deal.

RAMENGVRL conquered a rap scene that was far from welcoming towards female MCs. And now, she’s set her sights on conquering the world.

When Putri Estiani imagined what she wanted to be when she grew up, like many Asian kids who grew up in a conservative household, financial security was the top of the mind of her, not being a global rap star. But after discovering pop music in her childhood and later rap through icons like Kanye West in high school, her career path started to change. After spending a few years at a corporate job she admits she hated, she quite, took up the stage name of RAMENGVRL, which is inspired by her love of ramen and Japanese culture, pursued her rap career full time. Making a name for herself in the Indonesian hip-hop scene wasn’t easy as she had to battle double standards and gender stereotypes.

But thanks to her unapologetic yet fun personality and banging music that’s both playful and serious, she low-key turned Indonesian hip-hop on its head. Her debut single in 2016, I’m Da Man, proved she had what it takes with her debut mixtape no bethany and debut album Can’t Speak English taking her star even higher. These days, Ramengvrl is one of the hottest acts of her native Indonesia and up there with the likes Rich Brian and Warren Hue. And she did all of this while breaking down doors and gender stereotypes with her supportive parents behind her.

NYLON Manila recently caught up with the rap star to talk about her music, making it in the global stage, and her secret to good ramen. Read our full conversation with her below.

How did music enter your life?

I remember watching cable TV from a hotel room (coz we didn’t have that in our household–couldn’t afford it) and just let MTV run through the whole day. That made me obsessed with pop / rock songs and MV, and after that I became a fan of Britney and bought all her cassettes and live DVDs haha. So you can also see that I grew up more with pop rather than hip hop actually, but at that time hip hop has started to merge with pop on its own.

Could you describe what it was like working your 9-to-5 job? What did you do?

It was either in the media or e-commerce industry. I moved from one office to another (gotta look for the highest paying one, sorry! Loyalty to family not companies :p) and basically did marketing. …….Let’s just say I wasn’t really the best at it but I played my part haha!

Was there a specific moment in your life that made you decide that you wanted to become a musician full time?

I just know during that period when I liked to upload demos on SoundCloud that this is what brings me joy, but only until it started gaining enough traction and I was getting a few gigs did I think, “huh maybe I can actually do this for life”. But what if I fail and I end up broke and I can’t provide for my parents (I’m an only child) and I have to go back to working a day job–the thing I hate the most? But I was like f*ck it, I love doing this, and if I end up broke or whatever I’ll find a way, I always do, least I gotta do is TRY coz I don’t wanna end up on my dying bed thinking “what if..”

How did you land on your style of music and rap?

Of course you develop your style from what you consume. I’d say I haven’t like “landed” on a specific style–coz I always like to experiment with different sounds and genres actually, but I’d say… I love a mix of pop in everything, so I guess that’s why people say my songs are always so catchy.

Your music often straddles being fun and playful to being serious and discussing social issues. How do you balance those two sides?

Hm, good question. I’m always very observative and a thinker (although people do not see this usually), but at the same time, I feel like people take everything too seriously! Y’all not joking enough! I think important messages are best conveyed through the most fun and casual way possible, which is why a lot of times we understand what’s happening in the world better through.. Let’s say, standup comedy rather than a politician in some forum. Orrrrr.. I might just been reading a little too much Chuck Palahniuk lol

Your song FACTS serves as the lead single for asiatic.wav Vol.1 which features different acts from Asia. How did it feel to be included in the EP?

Represented! Asia has been killing it in a lot of things but especially music these days and I’m very happy to be in the forefront of one of the movements. Not to mention with a BDE track like that haha.

You’ve worked with quite a few musicians from around the world. Has there been a collaboration that has stood out to you the most?

Ain’t No MF with pH-1. I knew it’s a hit from the start but the impact it had was beyond what I had in mind. People really f*ck with the song and especially with the KHH and K-pop fans (which lowkey are one of the best crowd ever), and at the same time the MV looks super dope, people are talking about it still, and it’s directed by a female director and a good friend of mine, Drea! Love everything about this project.

Do you think that the Indonesian music scene is more welcoming of female rappers now as compared during your debut?

Oh definitely! To be honest I feel like it’s never been “against” female rappers but it’s more like, now the platforms are more present than ever. We can go on TikTok and spit some bars and reach millions of people right away and that’s something to be grateful for. But the issue has always been that people put more pressure to female rappers (or anything female, let’s be real), like you not only gotta spit but you also gotta look cute and dope but not too dope or else they tell you you’re vulgar yada yada yada–which I’m like f*ck that, again y’all too serious with this and forget to see the bigger picture: girls are spitting.

How does it feel to be seen as a rising star in the global music scene?

Happy of course, but also a bit pressured? Haha. Coz even from the start all I wanna do is express myself through music, but I guess now people feel represented as well and I think it’s kind of a responsibility almost for me to actually deliver that! Well I’m not gonna be complacent that’s for sure! Aim big.

Do you feel that your continued global success is helping push Indonesian hip-hop into a more mainstream space?

I do think so. Not only Indonesia, but also Asia I feel. Coz even though I said Asia has been killing it, people still don’t care enough for Asian hip hop and I think the joint effort of–not just me obviously–all Asian rappers keep on promoting that and showing to the world that ‘yo we out here and we lit.’

What do you think it is about you that makes you stand out from the crowd?

My IDGAF attitude? Hahaha. WHICH, coming from a conservative society speaks a lot. Some say my lyrics are too vulgar, but it’s just regular talk. People need to be ‘shocked’ to be open to new ideas. PLUS… these guys are ok with male rappers talking bout the same thing but not me? Pleasssse.

Where do you think your unapologetic personality comes from?

Honestly? Never sure about that myself. Every time someone meets my parents they always go like “Wow, you guys are like from different worlds”, coz they’re pretty conservative. I guess I always had that in me, and I guess mama Britney, Rihanna and Nicki taught me a lot about being independent and just being myself.

Is there a difference between the persona of RAMENGVRL as compared to Putri?

Hell yeah haha. Putri–or Putche, as I like to be called among friends (coz Putri means “princess” literally in Bahasa and it can be….. weird to me)–gets the most joy being lowkey with friends, practices the most uncool jokes, plays badminton and tennis (badly), writes diary like a 15-yo. RAMENGVRL is that unapologetic cool girl you wanna dance with in the club. I guess the only similarity is both talks about sex casually most of the time haha!

You often speak your mind in your music. Do you ever worry though that you’re maybe too honest in your music?

I do worry about that when I mention a bit of my family or uhm, a fling. Coz I can be VERY specific if I want to, but I guess it’s all about the balance. Also, sometimes I talk about something that’s very casual to me and don’t mean any malicious intent, but people took it the wrong way to the point where people were fighting in the comments while I’m just like… eating cereal on a Wednesday.

What advice would you give to young girls trying to follow their dreams?

Just do it! People care too much about what others think about them and a lot of times it can hinder you from greatness or from joy, so f*ck them and do it, coz you’ll never know!

For would-be fans, what songs of yours would you suggest they listen to first if they want to get into your music?

CA$HMERE, VASELINA, Foreign, Ain’t No MF, and Onto The Next.

Your stage name is partially inspired by your enthusiasm for ramen. What’s the secret to a good bowl of ramen?

I’d say GOMA GOMA GOMA SAUCEEE! Period!

The Careless Music Crew Turned Their Recent Trade Launch Into A Runway Real Quick

line
Remember when they only had 3 or 4 artists? Careless blowin' up.

We almost forgot it was a trade launch and not a fashion show for a hot sec.

With Careless Music, you know you’re going to get a show. But aside from the mind-blowing performances of the artists during their trade launch last Monday, we were equally stunned with all the fashion moments. It’s a fact that music and style go hand-in-hand, especially for artists, and we have to say, they’re one heck of a stylish crew. Issa Pressman in Balmain, Liza Soberano in a sultry midnight black corseted dress, and of course, Nadine Lustre in nothing but a white suit and a bejeweled top. Scroll down to see some of our favorite looks at Careless Music’s recent trade launch.

The man of the hour is finally here. The founder of Careless Music’s has always been into prints, but it’s one of the rare occasions that we’ve seen him in a brighter, sparklier version of a suit custom made by Kimi Felices. In a move that’s very Saint Laurent ala Anthony Vaccarello, James Reid gave the right balance between suave and rock and roll.

Tropical Hut’s Resurgence Is Proof That Good Things Can Come Out Of Social Media

We love to see it.

If ever there was an award for most unexpected comeback of 2022, it would probably go to Tropical Hut and it’s near overnight viral revival.

Social media is not a perfect tool. In the wrong hands, it can be used to spread hate and lies, sow division, and even erode democracy. But despite all its flaws, if there is anything good that social media has given us, it is the fact that it gives a spotlight and raises awareness for things that normally would be forgotten. We see this happen often and one of the most recent examples of social media meets sentimentality to do good is the unexpected but deserving revival of classic fast food chain Tropical Hut.

BACK FROM THE PAST

Unless you’ve been disconnected from the internet, you may have heard that Tropical Hut has been having its moment in the sun as the hottest fast food chain right now. And it can trace its sudden success to a tweet from JP Tanyag. A week ago, he tweeted that he was at that their Escolta branch as the only customer. While the tweet was very much a slice of life moment, it soon went viral, racking up tens of thousands of likes as it struck a nerve with those who grew up eating Tropical Hut.

If you haven’t eaten at Tropical Hut (which may change in the coming weeks), know that the fast food chain is considered an institution of the Philippine fast food scene. Established in 1962, it precedes that of brands like Jollibee and McDonalds in the country. In 1972, it was bought by the Mercury Group of Companies Inc. and has since been operating in the country. Over 50 years later, Tropical Hut is still standing, which is something its other competitors can’t say. But over time, the fast food chain’s popularity has waned as newer and more global chains started eating up more of the market.

But clearly, the love for Tropical Hut is still there. And thanks to that viral tweet, Tropical Hut has been seeing a surge of customers. Social media has been filled with clips of Grab drivers waiting by the dozens outside some Tropical Hut branches. Tropical Hut themselves are aware of their recent attention and have thanked people for their renewed support.

SO POPULAR THEY’RE RUNNING LOW ON SUPPLIES

May be an image of text that says 'Tropical Hut 1965 Sarap na ADVISORY Thank you for your overwhelming support. Some items are low in stock but we will serve your order as soon as our stocks are replenished. Please bear with us. #SarapnaBabalikbalikan'

The high demand has been great news for many attached to the fast food chain. For starters, staff are busy fulfilling requests from customers every hour as those days of empty stores are long gone. Grab drivers are also busy getting orders to the point where some are even turned away due to high volume. There have also been job openings in a few Tropical Hut locations for more staff to help meet demand. Tropical Hut might just even expand outside of the Metro with calls for branches in the provinces. The chain has become so popular that it even shared a message thanking customers for their patronage and that they were experiencing a shortage on certain supplies. Don’t worry though as they are working hard to resupply. They really went from low foot traffic to selling out common items in their commissary in over a week.

Their tagline of #SarapBabalikbalikan is true to life with both old customers who remember the chain from their youth and new customers haven’t tried it yet eating from Tropical Hut. The fast food chain has always had the reputation of having delicious food, a variety of items on the menu, and all served at low prices. And now, more people get to experience the underrated gem.

It’s amazing to think that just a couple of weeks ago, Tropical Hut wasn’t on most people’s radar. But thanks to one tweet and the power of childhood nostalgia, that all changed. Good things can come from social media when used positively. All their recent success warms the heart even more when just a couple of years ago, a branch in Carmona (that has since closed), asked people to eat in the restaurant.

To some, this hype might just feel like a trend. But to those who work at Tropical Hut, these means the world to them to be so busy as their livelihoods are no longer at stake. Hopefully it’s not just the higher ups but the hardworking staff who benefit from their sudden growth.

If you do fancy yourself a meal from Tropical Hut, we recommend you try their clubhouse sandwiches and spring chicken meals. Just please be patient and understanding towards staff and Grab drivers if the order takes a while to arrive given how popular it has become as of late. Their success and resurgence is a reminder that there are local gems out there worthy and deserving of the attention. So, once you’re done eating at Tropical Hut, take the time to discover other classic Filipino food spots. Who knows, we might see a Mushroom Burger resurgence this 2022 as well.

They Are The Blueprint: Levi’s Celebrates The Legacy of the Iconic Denim with Seven Visionaries

line

The good ol’ Levi’s 501 Original continues to ace the jean pool

Back in the aughts, Time Magazine once called the 501 Original the “Fashion Item of the Century”. With its long and illustrious history—149 years to be exact—Levi’s iconic and versatile denim jeans have seen many makeovers of the famous style. This year’s theme borrows a lot of the nostalgic vibes from the late ‘90s that we’ve seen take over the world. Called Levi’s 501 ‘90s jeans, the fashion piece has a more relaxed, looser, and even a little slouchy fit that should be matched with the right amount of attitude.

To celebrate the blue jean’s legacy, the denim legend partnered with seven visionaries whose creativity and personal evolution embody the spirit of the Original 501 through the campaign, “The Number That Changed Everything”.

Check out how these seven creative innovators and tastemakers show off the truly versatile style of the 501 Original and the 501 ‘90s.

Kid Cudi in 54 Was My Number

The pair that started it all. The 501 Original still has its signature straight silhouette and button-down fly. Like the iconic pair, Kid Cudi created a distinct niche in the hip hop scene and influenced a whole generation of artists who have taken cues from the sounds he has produced since his debut.

Tremaine Emory in B&T Freeman

The big and tall one. The B&T Freeman is the Original 501’s more baggy counterpart than Denim Tears founder, Tremaine Emory sports. The prolific creative director has collaborated with the American jeans company on many projects that puts history and representation at the forefront of his creations.

Staz Lindes in 501 ‘90s in Firestarter

A classic mid-rise with just the right amount of bagginess on the leg. The 501 Original meets the iconic ‘90s with this iteration. Model and bassist Staz Lindes rocks a distinctive style from androgynous to a glamazon.

Gabriella Karefa-Johnson in Plus 501 ‘90s Drew Me In

Highly flattering on the curves in a mid-rise silhouette. Just like the classic design’s rich history, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson has carved a path as a formidable tastemaker in the industry with an array of beautiful narratives.

Mike D and Gia Seo in Ska Ska

The original but in a different wash. The Ska Ska color shows the 501 Original in a straight leg and renowned vintage styling with musician, surfer and philanthropist Mike D and model, creative innovator, and style innovator Gia Seo.

Nathan Westling in Vintage 501 Original

A blast from the past. The Vintage 501 Original is a Hall of Famer among the many styles of denim pants on Levi’s roster. Well-known model Nathan Westling, who has inspired many by his life journey, wears the design of the first-ever blue jeans that witnessed many shifts in their style.

Issa Pressman in 501 Original

It’s not just American visionaries that the original jeans maker tapped for its 149th anniversary, they also collaborated with Southeast Asian denim heads and creatives who embody the same spirit of the campaign.

Meet LAPILLUS, The Newest Global K-pop Girl Group With A Filipino-Argentinian Member

line
LAPILLUS Fighting!

Fun fact: Chanty credits Belle Mariano and Charlie Dizon with introducing her to BTS and K-pop.

Related: Whoa! Here Are 8 Korean Idols Who You Didn’t Know Were Part Filipino

With how popular K-pop is in the country, it’s surprising then to see that there isn’t an abundance of Filipino idols making it big in K-pop as compared to say, Thailand. And with the relatively few Pinoy K-pop idols currently active, you wouldn’t necessarily call them A-list just yet. But that is all about to change. As the new girl group from MLD Entertainment and follow up to MOMOLAND, the announcement of LAPILLUS’ debut is bound to catch people’s attention.

But what is more striking is the fact that one of its members is Filipino. And it’s not just any teenage girl, it’s Star Magic actress Chantal Videla. From appearing on our screens on shows like Starla and ASAP, Chantal, or Chanty as she is now called, is jumping into the world of K-pop as an official idol. But while having a Pinoy idol has caught our attention, the group themselves has a story to tell and worth following, as seen in their debut song HIT YA!.

LAPILLUS MAKES THEIR DEBUT

LAPILLUS is a six-member girl group with a girl-crush charm and concept. The group takes its name from the stone/jewel of the same name. The meaning behind it is to reflect the different colors that emanate from the group and inspire others to find their own color and shine it on the world. And they weren’t kidding when they said the group has different colors. The group is being promoted as a global girl group mainly because of how different each member is. There’s Chanty, the eldest of the group, who’s Filipino-Argentinian. Shana, the group leader, is Japanese, while Yue is Chinese-American. The remaining three members, Bessie, Seowon, and Haeun, are from Korea.

With a repertoire of different languages and cultures under their belt, the group is coming out of the gate with a global perspective. During an exclusive press conference with Philippine media, Chanty admitted that their different languages and cultures made it hard for them to get close at first. “I only had a faint understanding of the language through the K-dramas I watched.” But as time went on, they opened up to one another and now consider their different colors and styles as their main strength and charm.

CHANTY, THE FILIPINA ACTRESS TURNED K-POP IDOL

Out of all the members, Chanty has been making the most noise thanks to her unique background. She’s a Filipina actress that is set to become a K-pop idol. It’s a rollercoaster career that few ever experience. But seeing her during the interview, she looked relatively the same as she was during her showbiz days, albeit with better singing and dancing skills, proficiency in Korean, and a better understanding of Korean culture.

She was also helping translate the questions from English to Korean for the other members to understand. Her road to becoming a K-pop idol began like how so many has, as a stan. And for this, she credits fellow actresses Belle Mariano and Charlie Dizon, who were also at one point training to be an idol, for introducing to K-pop, specifically BTS. And as they say, once you fall down the BTS rabbit hole, you never come out.

Her stage name of Chanty is actually just her nickname in real life. The staff at MLD decided to make it her name because it sounded cute and easier to pronounce. Chanty’s foray into becoming an idol came about thanks to a family friend. As she shared, she flew back to her home in Argentina during the pandemic. Her father had a friend who had connections with the higher ups at MLD Entertainment.

At the time, the president of MLD was looking for girls to audition to add to their next girl group. The friend showed him Chanty and she was soon getting a call that they wanted her in Korea to begin training immediately. She agreed and began her trainee arc in August 2021, a little over nine months. It was only when she arrived at MLD that they discovered that she was actually an actress.

BECOMING AN IDOL

If you knew Chanty during her ABS-CBN days, singing and dancing weren’t her known skills. Nor was she fluent in Korea aside from the small lines she remembers from K-dramas. So, the past nine months was filled with intensive training, the likes most idols-to-be go through, from dance lessons to cleaning the practice room and bathroom. Aside from that, she also took Korean lessons and had to adapt to the new culture she was living in, in particular the concept of seniority.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Chanty is set to become one of the highest profile Filipinos in K-pop. There’s no one like her in the industry. It’s a feeling Chanty admits is still trying to get used to. “Even until this moment, it still feels surreal to be here, to actually be called a K-pop idol. I still can’t wrap my head around it. But I am really grateful and blessed that I’ve been given this opportunity.”

@lapilluschanty_ Multilingual girl is here. ??? #lapillus #라필루스 #chanty #샨티 #kpop #fyp #foryou #lapillusdebut #4thgenkpop #힛야! #HITYA! @chantalvidela_ @official_lapillus #서원 #seowon #유에 #Yue #베시 #bessie #샤나 #shana #haeun #하은 ♬ HIT YA! (inst.) – Lapillus(라필루스)

In her eyes, the multilingual idol still has much to improve, but she hopes that in her new position, she will be able to inspire others to do the same given the wealth of talent among Filipinos. “I personally think that are so more capable Filipino girls that could probably be better at singing or dancing. With this little talent of mine, I’m grateful that I’m able to inspire, hopefully, the young girls out there to show their talent, be confident, and pursue their dreams.” Chanty hopes to open more doors for others to feel confident enough to do what they love. If Chanty can do it, so can you.

But despite how far she has and will go, Chanty is a regular 19-year-old Filipina at heart. She misses her family back home and craves the taste of pinakbet and laing that she had to give up for their diet. She considers Heart Evangelista her personal style star and looks to legends like Gary V and Regine Velasquez for inspiration. And, if you are wondering, she’s still close and keeps in contact with some of her Kapamilya friends like Charlie Dizon. Her Filipino side has even rubbed off on the members as Haeun learned that saying po is a sign of respect while Shana knows the word kawawa because Chanty said it once at a restaurant.

FROM GIRLS PLANET TO DEBUT

Chanty isn’t the only famous name in the group though. Shana may be familiar to K-pop fans as she competed in Girls Planet 999, making it all the way to the finals before sadly getting eliminated. And while she didn’t get to debut in Kep1er, she is now the leader of LAPILLUS. With over two and a half years as a trainee, it’s been a long time coming for Shana as the member with the longest training period.

But looking back on her time in the show, Shana feels that her debut came at a right time. “It would have been nice to debut then. But upon reflecting on myself, if I would debut with what I had then, I wouldn’t have enough confidence yet.” She spent the extra months of training and lessoned learned from Girls Planet to hone her skills further. Now, she feels more confident and happy to be debuting in LAPILLUS. “From the Shana you met in Girls Planet, I hope you support and appreciate the Shana that I am now.”

Another member who has also been attracting attention has been Haeun, the maknae of the group. At just 13 years old, she’s debuting at a very young age, young enough that it has even raised some eyebrows. But if you ask her, she doesn’t see her age as an issue. “Even though I’m 13 years old, I don’t feel like it.” In fact, she hopes that people won’t just see her for her age and instead take note of her aura and skills when performing. “In the future, I hope people not only focus on my age, but focuses on my talents.”

HIT YA! WITH THIS BOP

Thanks to their diverse background, LAPILLUS has caught the attention of quite a few fans. And thanks to their catchy debut single Hit Ya!, their debut is off to a strong start. The track and accompanying music video is a hard-hitting and powerful debut filled with confidence and bravado. But this is just the beginning of their journey and with a group composed of different personalities, who knows what else LAPILLUS will give.

The group, who consider BIGBANG’s G-Dragon and 2NE1 as some of their major musical inspirations, would love to collaborate with acts like Natti Natasha, Apink, and BTS in the future. Chanty in particular would love to work with Shakira if she had the opportunity to. Already, they have their eyes set on promoting in Korea and around the world. You can also expect further promotions with ABS CBN. LAPILLUS is also open to releasing songs in other languages, not just Korean. For now though, let’s savor their debut and see what these six girls have to offer to the world.

DALL-E Mini Is Giving Life To Either The Most Beautiful Or Horrific Images You’ll Ever See

line
The beauty of art is that it's so diverse.

Technology strikes again with the Dall-E mini’s ability to turn nearly any combination into what we can only describe as works of art.

Related: The Odd Yet Fun Trend Of Comparing Celebrities To Random Objects On Twitter, A Thread

Technology, it truly is a gift that keeps on giving. It seems that every other week there is a new invention coming out, taking advantage of or ushering in the next advancement in technology. And one area of science that has improved greatly as of late is in the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It can be used as a great tool for advancement or even usher in a dark future as seen in the recent news of a former Google employee claiming that the AI he was working on became sentient. And with the internet being the internet, AI can also be used to create hybrids of art and nightmare fuel as seen in the recent explosion in popularity of DALL-E mini.

AI MEETS THE INTERNET’S CREATIVITY

If you’ve been on Twitter recently, you may have come across images featuring a 3×3 grid displaying anything the imagination can think of. This is the work of the DALL-E mini, an AI created by Boris Dayma in July 2021.

How it works is that users type whatever, and we mean whatever, they want on the text bar. The AI will then comb through billions of data across the internet to come up with the desired image. The AI uses these images to build an association with the written text. Since DALL-E mini is a learning AI, the idea goes that feeding it enough images will let it learn what the users want and know what to create. Every time someone uses it, it is supposed to be learning and getting better. The DALL-E mini is based off the DALL-E and gets its name from Wall-E the robot and painter Salvador Dali who is known for his surrealist imagery. The service was initially used to auto-create captions for images. But now it’s going in reverse, developing images from captions.

If you’ve seen the DALL-E mini creations, some of them can come off as the visual definition of a word vomit. Depending on how you use it, DALL-E mini can create images you thought would never be possible or give abstract and nonsensical art best appreciated in a museum. Either way, it the internet’s favorite new AI with its popularity soaring thanks to places like Weird Dall-E Generations on Twitter and Reddit.

WORKS OF ART

If you would like to try it out for yourself, check it out here. Do note though that due to heavy traffic, you may not be able to generate an image immediately. If that happens, just keep on generating the image until it pops up. Here are just some of the weirdest, most random, and oddly beautiful DALL-E mini images we came across on social media.
