What We Liked About The Miss Universe PH 2024 Q&A Answers and What We Thought Was Missing

line
Let them speak!

The recently-concluded Miss Universe Philippines 2024 Q&A segment had the candidates talk briefly about some important things—here are some things we liked, and some things we wanted more of.

Related: Miss Universe Voice For Change: Winners, Advocacies, And What It Means In The Grand Scale Of Things

You know the drill. Before a new Miss Universe Philippines is crowned, five finalists must take the stage to answer a question, usually about them, their womanhood, their inspirations, or their struggles in 30 seconds in an effort to showcase that they’re beauty and brains enough to become Miss Universe Philippines. This year, the queens’ answers, albeit short, touched upon some relevant things, but is the Q&A segment as impactful as pageantry insist it to be?

Beauty pageant Q&A segments often fall into the trap of being all about “me, me, me,” in the sense that contestants’ answers can lean more into vague sentimentalities about how much being a beauty queen means to them—and it’s hardly their fault completely. From the very nature of beauty pageants putting more emphasis on women’s ability to look good walking over their critical thinking skills, to the time limit, as well as the pressure that they definitely “don’t feel right now,” there’s not much leeway to be eloquent and well-thought out under those glaring lights.

So it’s always a welcome change when Miss Universe candidates are not only thoughtful with their answers, but are able to convey socially-relevant and empowering messages on a huge platform—literally and figuratively.

Though Miss Universe, and beauty pageants in general, aren’t expected to be breeding grounds of diverse discourse (their very existence, actually, is problematic), it’s possible to discuss what kinds of messages are being relayed through these Q&A segments and what more candidates and beauty pageant organizations can do with their platform for other people at this point in time.

BUT FIRST, HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Women learn from each other. What is the biggest lesson that you’ve learned from another woman and how did it improve your life?

“My grandmother put me through school, and the biggest lesson I have learned from her is to always be kind. She is someone who has a big heart, and took care of me since I was a kid. And I do think that my grandmother is someone that I can look up to. She is someone that is an embodiment of what a great woman is.” — Maria Ahtisa Manalo, Quezon Province

What is your breakthrough or big achievement and how did it improve you as a person?

“Being here in this prestigious pageant, or the Miss Universe Philippines 2024, is my greatest achievement. The Tarah before is someone who really limited herself when it comes to her achievements. I stepped here in Miss Universe Philippines, and I see the transformation and the improvement, and how I was able to become an inspirational woman that I am now, and that is something that I will be proud of after this journey.” — Tarah Valencia, Baguio

Women have inspired you all throughout your life. Now tell us how you have inspired another woman?

“You know, I’ve been told many times that I am too short to join a beauty pageant. But now I realize that pageants are a representation, a reflection of that very nation, and tonight I am not only representing myself—but every Filipino woman sees themselves in me. I hope to inspire every Filipina that just like the universe, we too are limitless.” — Stacey Gabriel, Cainta

You are beautiful and confident. How would you use these qualities to empower others?

“As a woman of color, I have always faced challenges in my life. I was told that beauty has a standard, actually. But for me, I have listened to—always believe in my mother, to always believe in yourself, to uphold the values that you have in yourself. Because of these, I am already influencing a lot of women who are facing me right now, as a transformational woman. I have here 52 other delegates with me who have helped me to become the woman that I am. Thank you.” — Chelsea Manalo, Bulacan

What is the hardest challenge you face as a Filipina woman, and what do you do to hurdle that challenge?

“I think one of the biggest challenges that Filipinas face today are being limited. By still being shadowed by—unfortunately—men who are in society. But I think my platform and me standing here in front of you today, I can encourage women that you too can stand up. You can be strong. You can be powerful. You can own your own destiny, like I plan to tonight.” — Christi McGarry, Taguig

BEYOND THE PERSONAL

From acknowledging their family and fellow queens to sending messages of empowerment to other women, these pageant contestants understood that they were standing on that stage molded by people and representing not just themselves. Being able to bridge the personal with something bigger than oneself during a Q&A segment is a commendable move, signifying their willingness to look beyond selfish intentions.

OWNING YOUR DESTINY

In a historically controversial event, these women taking control of their own narrative and standing as inspirational figures can serve as a reminder that we have come so far as a society, but also that we still have a long ways to go.

While choice feminism (in terms of women choosing to participate in beauty pageants) can be counterproductive in terms of progressing as a society, finding the silver lining means insisting plenty of people can still be inspired by the message that women can speak up, lead, and pursue whatever they want to—which has not always been the case.

This insistence is popular rhetoric in defense of beauty pageants. From the advocacies candidates are expected to champion, to the very idea that women beauty queens hold power as empowering, inspiring individuals, there are aspects to beauty pageants that can have significant impact on other people.

ACKNOWLEDING IMPOSED LIMITS

From talking about the patriarchal conditions Filipino women struggle with—ironically, in an event that has always faced much valid criticism for upholding patriarchal ideals—to touching on colorism, Christi McGarry and Miss Universe Philippines 2024 Chelsea Manalo were able to bring up social issues that limit the women of today. Had they had more time, they probably could have served a more comprehensive examination of the social issues they mentioned.

To be “limitless” (as Stacey Gabriel says) women, all forms of oppression must be abolished. In an ideal world, no person is exploited, commodified, or objectified. Despite its best efforts to appear as if it’s evolving into something more holistically empowering and inclusive, the beauty pageant industry is still an exploitative industry that promotes unrealistic standards and the objectification of women. But we can’t expect pageant contestants to say all that on stage, can we?

IT’S NOT ENOUGH

At the end of the day, people can say all they want about pageants—how it’s not a UN convention therefore there’s no need for deep discussion, how we shouldn’t take it seriously, how it’s just a business. But we can’t ignore how much it impacts people and culture. As long as people care about Miss Universe and beauty pageants—and we can see that people still do—they will be relevant to talk about.

So, the Miss Universe Q&A segment on its own, as it exists today, is an avenue for ideas. And we can hear so much more insightful thoughts and ideas from these women if pageants truly championed beauty in more forms than just physical. Instead, the Q&A segment gets 10 minutes out of a five-hour show and we only barely get a hint of insight from these women who are meant to be inspirations.

It doesn’t seem like the public will be doing away with beauty pageants any time soon, despite all the calls to abolish them. But there are many ways they can be far more productive should they continue. At the very least, putting more emphasis on what these candidates have to say, what they have to champion, on such a huge platform, would allow people to see just how much women can make an impact on the world—or rather, the universe.

MISS UNIVERSE MARINA SUMMERS

Why Marina Summers Opening The Miss Universe Philippines Coronation Night Is More Revolutionary Than You Think

line
There is a crown for everyone.

“Oras na para tayo naman ang rumampa.” — Marina Summers

Related: Queen Energy: 6 Crossover Moments Between Miss Universe and Pinoy Drag

The Philippines was left in awe after Marina Summers’ show stopping performance on the sparkly stage of Miss Universe Philippines last night for the coronation. She went from doing a parody challenge of the pageant on Drag Race Philippines to actually opening the show. It was an eye-catching feast of glitz and glam, a true celebration of the Filipina beauty. But beyond the breathtaking production, a strong message lies beneath Marina’s very presence. Last night was not just a simple performance; it was a defiant act of visibility and empowerment for Marina and the LGBTQIA+ community.

A Win For The Community

This wasn’t just Marina’s moment; it was a victory for the entire LGBTQIA+ community. Marina continuously proves that Filipina drag is a force to be reckoned with, and her Miss Universe Philippines 2024 stint is currently sitting as the cherry on top of all her drag excellence victories. This positive representation is just another celebration of self-acceptance and a sense of belongingness.

What Marina did at the Miss Universe Philippines 2024 Coronation Night was more than just an appearance. First, she opened the show (costume change included). Then, she led all the delegates in the latter half of the performance. Finally, just like the delegates, Marina was also given time to give her intro spiel proudly exclaiming “Marina Summers. The Philippines!”

In one night, Marina helped break barriers that once stopped the queer community from soaring. With a simple name and hometown introduction to one of the biggest pageants in the Philippines, Marina did it for all the people in the community who look to pageants as a source of inspiration.

Expanding The Definition Of Beauty

Seemingly as dazzling as the candidates while flawlessly performing head-to-head with former Miss Universe Philippines Michelle Dee, Marina’s beauty never drowned in the sea of countless gorgeous faces. As beauty pageants continue to break away from the narrow standards of femininity, queer forces like Marina are making these spaces a lot more inclusive.

Marina is bejeweled in a manner that redefined beauty as an expression of self, a celebration of individuality transcending societal norms. To stand on a prestigious stage that supposedly picks “the most beautiful woman in the universe” was a powerful message to young LGBTQIA+ Filipinos: you are seen, you are worthy, and you belong on this stage and any other stage you set your sights on.

We Have Come So Far

If you told people ten years ago that a drag queen will walk the runway of Miss Universe Philippines, they would probably not believe you. Queer icons in the media have come from being the comedic relief of the show to being THE show. Marina’s moment is a signal that we have finally stepped into an era that allows the empowerment of the queer community, especially in big spaces with a limitless reach.

Yes, we still have a ways to go for true acceptance with the pageant world still having its its fair share of barriers for greater representation. But, we move closer to a time where a member of the LGBTQIA+ community walking the Miss Universe stage is beyond parody and there to slay and deliver.

For The Little Gay Boys At Home

What makes all of this even better was that Marina dedicated the pivotal moment to the young LGBTQIA+ members watching this scene from their screens. “This is for every baklang chikiting that dreamed of saying this iconic line. Oras na para tayo naman ang rumampa,” Marina said in her tweet.

MUPH picking Marina to do the introductory line during the opening sets a positive notion to the little gay boys watching the program. Last night, Marina Summers didn’t just grace the Miss Universe PH stage; she served as a sign to every little gay Filipino boy who ever dared to dream. Dreams that once felt like whispers, tucked away in the deepest corners of their hearts. That night wasn’t just an opening, but a promise—a validation that their dreams are no longer just wishes on a star, but possibilities waiting to take flight.

Discrimination and marginalization are still issues faced by many in the local LGBTQIA+ community. Harmful stereotypes and bigotry that leads to physical assaults still abound. Yet, doors continue to be opened—ones that lead to a path where LGBTQIA+ Filipinos can thrive authentically without fear of judgment or exclusion.

Marina standing on that stage is a reminder that true beauty lies in the courage to be yourself, in all your glorious individuality—and that alone is the most revolutionary crown of all.

MARK LEE 200

7 Things We’re Loving From NCT Mark’s ‘200’ Era

line
Look at our little rockstar go.

Our underground SoundCloud rapper Mark Lee dreams have finally come to reality.

The numbers 106 and 94 are adding up as NCT’s Mark Lee’s solo era is finally here again, and it’s a full-on rockstar rampage. We’re talking alter identities on Instagram, heart-melting acoustic renditions, and enough Spidermark references to make your head spin.

MARK LEE 200

X/NCTSMTOWN

We’re diving into seven reasons why 200 is the hottest thing to hit the charts since, well, Mark Lee himself.

Instagram User r_e__m___

MARK LEE 200

INSTAGRAM/R_E__M___

It was a moment that left NCTzens all in shambles. Everyone knew where they were and what they were doing the instant Mark changed his Instagram bio to a cryptic burner account with the handle “r_e__m___.” The community was abuzz with speculation. What could this mean? The truth is, this user is none other than an alter ego of the singer, a persona he’s adopting for his solo promotions. Seemingly posting like some underground SoundCloud rapper, this account documents the creative process and daily life of artist Mark Lee beyond his NCT persona. Needless to say, the fans are eating it up.

Minhyung’s Version

There is nothing better than an acoustic version of the sweetest song in the Mark Lee discography. Along with the official audio for 200,  Mark also released a version with only his voice and an accompaniment from his trusty acoustic guitar. Its bareness and soulful delivery just hit the heart spot on, like actually being serenaded by Mark himself. Bonus: he uploaded a live version, too!

Spidermark Is Canon

MARK LEE 200

X/NCTSMTOWN

A running gag within NCITY is how much Mark resembles Spiderman, specifically Tom Holland’s portrayal of the superhero. From little quirks to Mark’s insane spidey senses on and off stage, it’s pretty fascinating to think about the possibility of Mark actually bagging a Spiderman role in the near future. But we didn’t have to wait too long as we got to see it in 200! The music video for the track is an easter egg feast of all the inside jokes within the Markfs, Mark’s fandom, with several references to Spiderman. We’d like to think that Spidermark might just be real.

Trend Takeover

You would think that some TikTok fan account is responsible for uploading Mark’s silly edits these days, but no, it’s just Mark being himself. From fun collabs to entertaining trends, it’s good to know that our homie is just as chronically online too.

It’s All Mark Lee

It’s already a given that Mark is an ultimate all-rounder, but he just keeps delivering. Just like any of his solos, Mark had a hand in deciding the artistic direction of all the creations he put out. 200 just screams Mark, from the concept to lyrics to the overall early 2010s rock-sounding beats. It’s his era, and nobody is stopping him.

Cover Cutie

Despite his packed schedule touring sea to sea with NCT Dream for the rest of the year, we’ll never catch Mark lacking with the promo of his solo. Just a day before the release of 200, Cosmopolitan Korea released pictures with Mark Lee as their cover star. It’s a field day for NCTzens and Markfs with the back-to-back-to-back dropping of scrumptious content from the man. Not complaining though.

200 in TDS3

Every night of The Dream Show 3, all attendees sit tight in the hopes of Mark performing 200 live for them. Well, it hasn’t happened yet. But the closest we could get is Haechan singing a bit of 200 for him on their Jakarta stop. We’re getting closer to the goal, one show at a time.

Check out Mark’s new solo ‘200’ here!

Great Expectations: Harvey Bautista On Welcoming Pressure And Constant Evolution

line
Zooming to success.

Harvey Bautista is on the rise as one of Gen Z’s up-and-coming leading men. But he’s not taking anything for granted.

Related: Stars On The Rise: These 10 Young Actors Are The New Generation of Leading Men

This NYLON Manila Discovers feature was originally published on the NYLON Manila MyZine “Just Be” print pack series, which you can get on SariSari.shopping and shop.nylonmanila.com.

He says the words “nepo baby” first. Not with a hint of contempt nor an air of dismissiveness, but with a refreshing awareness reserved for the most introspective.

Harvey Bautista is a familiar face in more ways than one. The son of former Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista had a years-long stint in sketch comedy series Goin’ Bulilit from 2011 to 2016, and has acted in ABS-CBN anthologies Maaalala Mo Kaya and Wansapanataym. In 2022, he also had roles in the movie Blue Room and an episode of Dear God, where he acted toe-to-toe with Piolo Pascual.

harvey bautista zoomers high street criza taa nepo baby

He has a name and a track record he will carry with him throughout his career. But the 20-year old doesn’t shy away from his family name and his history as a child actor, acknowledging them as inherent parts of his life.

“Isipin mo,” he recounts, relaxed on his patio on a sunny Thursday afternoon. “This tiny, chinito, Englishero nepo baby in auditions for Goin’ Bulilit na hindi nagta-Tagalog—nakapasok out of nowhere.” The casual self-awareness was jarring, knowing how other “nepotism babies” have reacted to being called one, but very welcome. Clearly, this wasn’t someone who was afraid of owning who he was.

harvey bautista zoomers high street criza taa nepo baby

“It’s difficult,” he says of the balancing act that is being a child actor. “But you’re never gonna get an experience like that anywhere else.”

Child actors have it easier in terms of pressure, he explains, in that they’re not expected to perform at the level of veterans and more seasoned professionals. “Cute ka pa eh,” he laughs. “But now, it’s different. Siyempre may expectation na yung mga tao sa’yo. There’s all this pressure and this expectation to deliver. Pero it’s fun! I welcome it.”

A RE-DISCOVERY

harvey bautista zoomers high street criza taa nepo baby

While there has been very little complaint, if at all, about Harvey being a “nepo baby” (at least, in the larger public discourse), there’s no denying privilege is an intrinsic aspect of his career, despite it not being his own fault. Even something as simple as the support his family has always bestowed upon him, how they encourage him and keep him grounded—it’s a privilege not everyone is afforded.

But talent speaks for itself. And perhaps the very format of Zoomers (2024), which essentially became Harvey’s re-introduction to the world as a young adult actor, had a hand in showcasing why he deserves to be where he is now (Zoomers is available to watch on YouTube).

“It was really an opportunity I didn’t want to lose,” Harvey shares. “Kasi ang tagal ko na rin siyang hinihintay.” He had a feeling Zoomers was going to be something new, something different.

“I feel like isang problem ko as a Gen Z is having to deal with how people perceive me,” he candidly said in his audition for Zoomers. “Siyempre, baka alam nila yung career ko, baka kilala nila ako through my dad Herbert Bautista.”

While people in the showbiz industry have different forms of privilege that have given them the chance to be where they are now, what matters more is what one does with the privilege they are afforded. Will you stay stagnant and complacent knowing that you’ll always have a safety net of wealth and connections you can fall back on? Or will you pursue something with all you’ve got because you know it’s your purpose in life?

Harvey seems to be choosing the second—always pushing, honing his craft, actively striving to use the pressure to constantly evolve from one project to another. “Kada project kasi, dapat may improvement yan. Dito sa next project na ‘to, I need to do better than the last one.”

LOOKING WITHIN

If anything, there’s no doubt the young artist loved what he did. He’s been doing it for more than half his life. For Harvey, acting, filmmaking—that’s it for him. It’s what he wants to do, and it’s what he loves to do, if his enthusiasm is any indication. Answering questions regarding where his passion lies is as easy to him as laughing.

But if there was ever a moment he was drawn to a different path, it would have been the moment he finished high school. At that point in his life, there was the option to pursue culinary school. “I love to cook,” he shares. “But it wasn’t really like a switch from filmmaking to culinary—if filmmaking didn’t work out, at least I would have that to fall back on.”

WHAT LIES AHEAD

harvey bautista zoomers senior high street criza taa nepo baby jiggs

Harvey has kept a relatively low profile since his Goin’ Bulilit days, but has continuously worked on his own craft and filmmaking. He’s taken on roles here and there, but Zoomers propelled him to new heights of fame and virality.

The actor’s already slated to appear in more projects with Zoomers co-star and screen partner Criza Taa. The two earned praise for their individual talent and their chemistry together, which is easily a highlight of the teen series, so there’s no wonder why they’re paired up for more projects. One of which, he shares, is Deadline, an upcoming slasher horror film about a group of teenagers who need to survive.

Harvey will also reprise his role as Jiggs on the upcoming second season of Zoomers, and is currently part of the new series High Street, which is the sequel to the youth-oriented thriller drama Senior High (2023-2024).

Young, driven, and armed with experience and an awareness that keeps him grounded, Harvey Bautista has a long road ahead. But challenges are nothing new to him, and this is only the beginning of a new chapter in his life and career. He carries everything with a calm grace, adapting and learning as he grows, eager to make the most of it.

Adulting 101: Your Beginner’s Guide to Grocery Shopping

line
Ah, the simple joys of grocery shopping.

Remember all those shopping trips with your parents? Now, it’s your turn in your latest chapter of adulting.

Related: Gen Zs on What It Was Like Growing Up in Strict Households and How It Affected Their ~Adulting~

Transitioning to adulthood comes with numerous responsibilities, and grocery shopping is one of the essentials every adult needs to master. After all, having adult money doesn’t mean you simply spend it on healing your inner child with indulgences—it also means making smart choices to sustain your daily needs.

As we welcome you into Adulting 101, scroll through this list to help you navigate the world of grocery shopping efficiently and effectively. From planning your meals to understanding food labels and avoiding unnecessary purchases, this guide covers everything you need to become a confident and savvy shopper.

Budget-Friendly Finds

Setting a budget before you shop is key to keeping track of your financial means and avoiding splurges. Take note of sale sections, where you can often find excellent deals on essential items. And hey, remember those times when our parents shamelessly asked for discounts? It’s time to embrace that spirit and even wield the power of coupons. These little money-saving tricks might have seemed uncool before, but they’re a gift when it’s your turn to spend your hard-earned cash.

Meal Prepping

Meal prepping helps you create a shopping list, reducing the likelihood of impulse purchases. Whether your taste buds are screaming for Filipino food or crazy cravings, take a moment to map out your breakfasts, lunches, and dinners.

And while you’re at it, let’s not forget the money-saving magic that happens when you bid farewell to those tempting food delivery apps—no matter how convenient they may seem in the heat of the moment.

Notes on Bulk Buying

Consider buying non-perishable items in bulk to save money and ensure you’re always stocked up on essentials. Products like bathroom supplies, canned goods, and easy meal options have a long shelf life and are often cheaper when purchased in larger quantities.

However, it’s important to only bulk buy items that you’ll definitely use to avoid wasting money and groceries. By being strategic with your bulk purchases, you can enjoy significant savings and a well-stocked pantry without the risk of excess or spoilage.

Shopping List

Instead of aimlessly walking on grocery aisles and picking everything in sight, creating a shopping list is a game-changer. Break it down into categories like household essentials, pantry must-haves, and produce. Here’s a sneak peek at what your list might look like:

  • Beverage: Lipton Tea
  • Dairy: Magnum Ice Cream Bars
  • Household Essentials: Breeze ActivBleach Detergent
  • Pantry must-haves: Knorr Sinigang Mix, Lady’s Choice Peanut Butter
  • Personal Care Picks: Dove Body Bar

Reuse. Reduce. Recycle

Helping the environment can be as simple as bringing reusable bags for your shopping trips. The best part? Some stores offer incentives, such as discounts or loyalty points, for customers who bring their own bags. By making this small change, you’ll contribute to a more sustainable future and potentially enjoy some added perks from your favorite stores.

Isa Briones On Family, Activism, Musical Theater, And Finding Hope In Hadestown

line
"It's a sad song, but we sing it anyway."

Filipino-American actress and singer Isa Briones takes a journey way down Hadestown and talks her family, activism, playing Eurydice on Broadway, and the ineffable power of musical theater.

Whether it’s talking about her family, Hadestown, or the power of musical theater to inspire people or make them feel the breadth of emotion, Isa Briones brims with passion—a young artist embodying what it means to weave artistry with advocacy.

Hadestown is a Tony and Grammy award-winning musical by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell which tells a version of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The setting and music is reminiscent of New Orleans, jazz and blues, and speakeasies, with allusions to modern socio-political issues.

Isa Briones plays the aforementioned Eurydice, a young girl who longs for a life beyond the cold, poverty, and strife. She acts opposite Jordan Fisher’s Orpheus, a poor orphan and musician who vows to end their struggle and bring back spring with a song. Hadestown also features the narrator Hermes (currently played by Isa’s father and actor Jon Jon Briones), the Fates, as well as the story of Persephone and Hades, the latter of which is the owner of Hadestown, a bleak underground factory filled with exploited, disheartened workers.

The 25-year old actress, singer, activist, and now Broadway star sat down with NYLON Manila, all the way from New York, to talk about her journey so far and just how much the art of musical theater is both reflection and resistance.

WAY DOWN HADESTOWN

hadestown broadway orpheus and eurydice hermes musical theater jonjon briones isa briones

The acclaimed Hadestown is a sung-through modern musical retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, in which Orpheus uses his music to try and free his lover Eurydice from death. He strikes a deal with Hades, where the god of the underworld lets Orpheus lead Eurydice out of the underworld, as long as he does not turn and look at her. But of course, he does. And whether it was because of doubt, magic, or simply because he loves her, this tragic moment ends the age-old tale of humanity, love, grief, and loss.

Hadestown opened on Broadway in 2019, but Isa got the role of Eurydice relatively recently, starting her run in March of 2024, and ending in June. She got the role alongside her father, longtime musical actor Jon Jon Briones, who currently plays Hermes. She excitedly revisits the moment they first FaceTimed each other, immortalized in a screenshot, gushing over getting their roles.

“Not everyone gets to do that with their family, with someone they love so much,” she says of working onstage with her father. “My parents are the reason I’m an actor.”

Isa was an early fan of Hadestown, but reignited her obsession over the past year, so she basically manifested earning the role of Eurydice. Saying yes to the role fulfilled a dream of hers, and being able to work with a stellar cast, including her dad, was the icing on the cake.

“[Hadestown] is so grounded,” she muses. “It’s so based in truth.” Although she loved the musical and what it stood for, saying yes to Hadestown being her Broadway debut wasn’t just because of that.

hadestown broadway orpheus and eurydice hermes musical theater jonjon briones isa briones

“Well, as an actor you just want a job,” she smiles wryly. “My family and I are in a good place right now, but it hasn’t always been like this. We have not always had jobs.”

Born in London to a musical theater family, Isa Briones has been surrounded by music, acting, and theater all her life. It’s no surprise she ended up where she is now, doing something in this world she’s loved forever. Her stage and screen roles include Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds on the Hamilton Angelica tour and Dahj on TV series Star Trek: Picard (2020-2022).

She speaks highly of her parents, recounting moments where she would watch them onstage doing their thing, hearing comments about her own performance being reminiscent of her father’s (which clearly fills her with pride), and taking to heart the lessons they teach.

Her mom is a huge reason why Isa loves musicals and why she’s drawn to stories told through acting and song—to the ephemeral yet everlasting moments on a stage. “She’s always said when I was young—musicals, you sing when speaking is not enough. You are feeling something so big, that talking is not enough. You have to sing it.”

HOPE IN STORYTELLING

hadestown broadway orpheus and eurydice hermes musical theater jonjon briones isa briones

Though a tragedy, the story of Orpheus and Eurydice has been told countless times, and every time, people listen. In Hadestown, the musical follows a cyclical storytelling format, ending with a reprise of its beginning song, Road to Hell.

With lyrics like “to know how it ends, and still begin to sing it again,” it hammers in the notion that these stories need to be told, and they will be told, if only for the reason that there is value in hope—that there is value in trying again and again and again despite how futile it all seems. There is hope for new beginnings even in the most tragic of endings.

Isa shares that one of her favorite parts of performing in or even watching the show is witnessing people react to the moment Orpheus turns around, sealing the love of his life’s fate as well as his own.

hadestown broadway orpheus and eurydice hermes musical theater jonjon briones isa briones

The audience, she says, would be gasping or weeping, letting their sadness and frustration escape in a tragic moment that’s been told thousands of times over. “That’s the beauty of the show,” Isa says. “Hermes tells you right at the beginning ‘it’s a sad song’.”

“It’s a tragedy, but also the point of the show is hope,” she continues. “It’s giving you hope for a second that it might turn out differently this time. It shows the beauty and the tragedy [of the story], but also why you have to keep hoping. You have to keep believing that maybe this time, things will change.”

With a show almost every night, in New York, in London, across North America, and South Korea, the tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice keeps getting told to people who know the ending and people who don’t—all of them partaking in honoring a story of rising up against adversity, being brave enough to go to the ends of the earth for love, even if it means losing all that you love.

hadestown broadway orpheus and eurydice hermes musical theater jonjon briones isa briones

And Hadestown doesn’t just touch on hope in terms of Orpheus and Eurydice’s story. For instance, every performance of If It’s True is rousing, as Orpheus pleads and laments why his efforts aren’t enough to save Eurydice from Hades. The workers of Hadestown are, in turn, inspired to take his words and actions of journeying to the factory against all odds to heart. “[Jordan’s] If It’s True makes me want to leap up to my feet and protest,” Isa shares. “The way he delivers that song is so impactful.”

In the song, the unrest grows, the workers’ rebellion against Hades imminent. “This is a protest song,” Isa recounts her realization. “This is him gathering people to be like ‘we need to fight the power,’ and that really resonates with me.”

VOICE FOR CHANGE

hadestown broadway orpheus and eurydice hermes musical theater jonjon briones isa briones

Hadestown is a layered, clever musical that touches on relevant political themes, including but not limited to labor, poverty, greed, industrialization, exploitation, and even climate change. The songs reference problems that are no less true in the world outside Hadestown, and it’s why Isa thinks it’s a “perfect” show for her to do.

She delves into how it’s so easy for her and other people, especially in the last few years, to feel helpless and hopeless when they’re fighting for a cause. We get frustrated that nothing is changing and ask ourselves ‘is what I’m doing even helping at all?’. This frustration is represented well in the musical, and is a part of the show that makes her so emotional. The activism in Hadestown, Isa describes, is artful and graceful, but impactful nonetheless.

“Unfortunately, yeah, you’re gonna get knocked down a lot,” she says . “But you have to keep fighting, because it changes things little by little. I like to think of it like, every time we do [Hadestown], something’s changing a little bit.”

hadestown broadway orpheus and eurydice hermes musical theater jonjon briones isa briones

Isa also raves about newer musicals that, like Hadestown, tackle power and hope, and journeys of struggle and strength. She brings up wanting to watch Suffs The Musical, a new Broadway show about the women’s suffrage movement in America.

“The way it makes you think about where we are today—like that is what good art does. It takes you on that journey of being like, ‘look how we’ve progressed, but look how far we still have to go.'” An advocate and activist herself, Isa was on the picket line during the SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023, and is an outspoken advocate for proper and progressive Asian-American representation.

Isa’s voice carries indignation when she tells how her father’s career was met with so many roadblocks because he was Asian, and pride when she says how much he’s done for representation on stage. “You have to keep fighting,” she asserts. “Even if you are a flower blooming in the bitter snow.”

Her version of fighting, she reflects, is very reflective of her generation—loud and adamant. While for earlier generations, like her father’s, fighting is sometimes “keeping your head down and doing a hundred times more work than others just to move forward.” It’s a valid version of activism, cementing your place in an industry that isn’t as favorable to you as it is to others. Both ways to fight can co-exist, and we should be able to unite to fight for a worthy cause, whether it be love or liberation or both.

hadestown broadway orpheus and eurydice hermes musical theater jonjon briones isa briones

Through art, music, theater, and protesting on the streets, through all the ways we resist injustice and oppression, through choosing to go through hell for what we know is worth the fight, like Isa Briones, we hope. We hope to let the world we dream about be the world we live in now.

7 Things You Need To Know Before Going To The B★VERSE “BTS, Singing The Stars” Exhibition in Manila

Where my money, yah? Where the party, yah?

Another day, another way to get closer to BTS during their enlistment era.

Get ready to be transported to a space dedicated to BTS and us, the BTS ARMY, through B★VERSE “BTS, Singing The Stars.” Opened this May 17, this isn’t just your typical merch store. It’s a full-on sensory exhibit that left me starry-eyed and even teary-eyed during the purple carpet event last May 14.

B★VERSE, pronounced “B-Star-Verse,” is a clever play on BTS and the idea of a whole universe dedicated to them. This immersive production is located at the 4th level of Araneta City’s Gateway Mall 2 in Cubao. A collaboration between The Fact Music Awards (TMA) and YiZ Entertainment, this exclusive experience has already made stops in Malaysia, Japan, and Thailand.

But first, TMA Explained: The K-Pop Awards with Fan Power

TMA, or The Fact Music Awards, is a prestigious Korean music awards show since 2019. Unlike others, it combines the Circle Chart (previously known as the Gaon Chart) data with fan votes worldwide to decide the winners. BTS dominated for years, even snagging grand prizes (Daesang) from 2018 – 2022 and the Fan N Star Choice Award (Group) for 2022 – 2023. Jin received the Fan N Star Choice Award (Individual) in 2022.

The BTS ARMY also are fans of the awards show because the organization released special photobooks. The Fact BTS Photobook Special Edition: We Remember is filled with photos taken during “The Fact Music Awards” last December 12, 2020. Special images of the “MTV Unplugged Presents: BTS,” which aired on February 24, 2021, are also included.

Its second installment, 2021 The Fact BTS Photobook Special Edition, is also considered one of the most memorable shoots of the septet, as they are featured wearing sleek suits. Also featured in this book are exclusive photos of BTS’ performance for BBC Radio 1. This memorabilia was made available to the public in July 2021.

The third photobook was a celebration of BTS’s 10th anniversary. Entitled Present, it has been available for purchase since April 2023. This collectible captured the moments of the TMA event held last October 8, 2022, at the KSPO Dome.

Before you head out to the exhibit, we’ve compiled a few tips and tricks so you’ll have the best time in this Magic Shop.

1. Watch some of the BTS performances and speeches from The Fact Music Awards in VR

BVERSE EXHIBIT

TMA Music Awards is recreated in full detail, and fans are transported to the show itself, with BTS almost right in front of you. We loved that even the sides of the stage, the floors, and the ceilings appeared very real. Be warned, sometimes BTS can get closer to you!

2. Strike a pose with BTS standees or recreate their poses near the Present tree

BVERSE EXHIBIT

Our personal favorite is the installation that is reminiscent of the third The Fact Photobook. There are also standees in the end, so ensure you get your pose and cameras ready. Don’t forget to recreate some of BTS’ iconic expressions!

3. Learn more about BTS through thematic rooms

BVERSE EXHIBIT

This unique showcase is dedicated to the distinct personality of each member. We’re tempted to tell you what’s inside, but we’d rather you experience it yourself. While photos are not allowed inside RM’s Nature Planet, Jin’s Satellite, J-Hope’s Hope Planet, V’s Film Planet, Suga’s Art Planet, Jimin’s Aqua Planet, and Jung Kook’s Prism Planet, the lack of distraction brought us to a higher state of euphoria.

4. All roads lead to the ARMY Way

BVERSE EXHIBIT

Just when we thought it was all over, a special room was made to immortalize the special relationship of the K-pop superstars with the fandom. We found ourselves mesmerized by the iconic photos and quotes on the walls. Combined with hearing the songs dedicated to the BTS ARMY, this is one example of how the connection will remain forever, bulletproof.

5. Walk down memory lane with BTS and other K-stars

After having all the feels, tour the hallway filled with photos of the TMA winners. It will surely bring you back to the special appearances, the heartstopping performances, and the unique interactions between the artists and their fans.

6. Party with BTS through projection mapping

Lights and sounds come together in this area. In our case, we went all out and danced our way to BTS’ biggest hits. Our tip? Don’t forget to look down and see the art on the floor.

7. Browse and buy the limited edition BTS B★VERSE merch

Clear folders, postcards, calendars, brochures, tote bags, and t-shirts are some of the “useful” things that you can take home. Who doesn’t need these essentials with their biases on it? Right?

Ready to enter the BTS-verse? Here’s how to snag a ticket:

ARMYs can purchase:

  1. Online through the Ticketnet website
  2. Ticketnet’s Box Office located in the Smart Araneta Coliseum’s Yellow Gate
  3. Gateway Mall 2’s Information Desk (walk-ins via B☆verse Ticketbooth are also allowed)

Types of tickets:

  1. Regular Pass (P 1,500.00) – allows entry only during the chosen date and time
  2. Flexi-Pass (P1,900.00) – lets fans come in at any time during their chosen date

Also, BPI, the official bank sponsor of B★VERSE has a special treat for its cardholders.

As a special treat, you can score a free cinema pass if you buy a movie ticket at Gateway Malls on the same day as your B★VERSE visit. Just present your B★VERSE pass at the ticket booth. This makes your trip to Araneta City a lot of fun (and economical), as you can enjoy Gateway’s Cineplex 18 with your loved one or your BTS ARMY bestie.

If that wasn’t enough, each ticket also comes with a battery-operated ARMY Star Badge and a random photo card of one of the BTS members. In our case, we pulled Mr. Worldwide Handsome. And in the spirit of ARMY friendship, we exchanged our photocard for an RM photocard and we all got exactly what we wanted. Who doesn’t want that?

BVERSE EXHIBIT

B★VERSE “BTS, Singing The Stars” Manila is now open until August 15, 2024.
