EXO’s CHEN Opens Another “DOOR” To A Realm Rich With His Emotions And Musical Colors

line
A door to infinite possibilities.

CHEN, the phenomenal singer and storyteller that he is.

Related: LEO Is Taking It All In Stride—The Good And The Bad

Even with over 10 years of being part of one of K-pop’s celebrated groups, EXO, and five years of building his sleek discography as a solo artist, CHEN has yet to open a lot of “doors” — “doors” that will lead to new creative avenues. With DOOR being CHEN’s fourth EP, the artist has continually shown his evolved self. A growth evident in his storytelling, emotions, and vocals, his latest addition brings a new sense of refined maturity.

By how he conveys such emotions, he “immerses himself as the protagonist of it,” ultimately making the song his own.

DOOR imparts dual symbolism through the themes of “Blank” and “Stack,” representing the heart’s journey of being both “emptied” and “filled.” And CHEN believes that this message is perfectly put across in his chosen title track, Empty: “I’ve tried my best to convey my message in a way that feels most authentic to me,” he tells NYLON Manila in an exclusive interview.

CHEN

Boasting a total of six tracks, CHEN lent his hands to the creation of five of them, infusing his signature flair to elevate the album’s cohesion. Ranging from ballads to retro tunes, the tracks Empty, Dandelion (to which his fellow member BAEKHYUN contributed lyrics), PLAYLIST (feat. HAON and BE’O), Fall In Love Again, Starlight, and Remember explore themes surrounding life, existence, love, and nostalgia. It’s an album made with authenticity.

Ahead of DOOR’s highly-anticipated release, we talked to CHEN about his latest release, how the process of showing his facets through music is going, and how the album serves as an invitation to the listeners on a journey into the artist’s creative realm. Read the full interview with CHEN below!

First of all, congratulations on your new album! Tell us how it feels like returning after one year and six months since Last Scene. How’s your goal of “sharing how I see things through music” going?

Thanks for the warm welcome! As time goes by, my views and thoughts are constantly changing, and each album reflects my perspective throughout time. So, my goal of “sharing how I see things through music” is definitely going well so far! I’m curious to see what aspects of myself will be reflected in my future albums.

It’s been five years since you debuted as a solo artist. How do you feel about time flying so fast? Is there anything you’ve learned from yourself the moment you embarked on your solo journey?

Time really flies. In the blink of an eye, a significant amount of time has passed. I was fortunate enough to have countless experiences. What I’m most proud of is that I’ve taken the time to gain a deeper understanding of myself during this time.

Why did you decide to name the album DOOR? How do you think the album and the tracks represent what kind of person CHEN is and the thoughts you wanted to convey with this one?

The DOOR is a mediator that allows things to be filled, emptied, entered, or exited. This dual symbolism fits perfectly with my title track Empty as it also represents my desire to invite fans to my music. Each song contains my honest interpretation, and I’ve tried my best to convey my message in a way that feels most authentic to me.

Do you think you have yet to open a lot of “doors” that will show a new facet of CHEN? What are you hoping to showcase to everyone in the coming years?

I see myself as an endless “door” and the way my fans perceive me is also a reflection of that “door.” I am always grateful to the fans who view me with pride, and within that, I always strive to remain my true, sincere self.

Could you share with us why you decided to have Empty as the title song of the record? Tell us about the other tracks as well and your collaboration with HAON and BE’O for PLAYLIST.

I chose Empty as the title track because its unique, melancholic melody captured my heart. It was the perfect song that I feel perfectly embodies the more mature version of myself I’ve become. I’m grateful that this album contains songs from such diverse genres. PLAYLIST, a track written by Colde was created with the sole intention of creating a fun and enjoyable song. With the additional features of BE’O and HAON, the song has become even more energetic and fun!

CHEN

You said in an interview that you hope the younger CHEN enjoyed a bit more, and that that is one of your regrets until now. I wanted to ask you: do you now know how to make time for yourself, how to enjoy fully? Are you doing it right now, and are you happy with it?

I feel like I’ve gained a lot more peace of mind lately. Even when going through the same daily routines as before, I now have the capacity to see and feel much more. I think because of this, I was able to make this album with even more happiness and excitement than before.

Last Scene was the first album you released in your 30s—and this is the second one. How’s your 30s been going? What’s something you’ve learned from your youth that you’re going to apply and bring with you until your 30s?

Honestly, age doesn’t really matter to me. Turning 30 hasn’t changed me or given me new goals. I believe that who I am today is shaped by my past experiences. Among those, the most important experience has been receiving endless love from my fans. It’s an incredibly valuable and precious experience. Being loved is truly something to be grateful for.

In an interview five years ago, you said that hearing the phrase “Thank you for singing” makes you motivated. What else have you read that has had a big impact on you as an artist?

It feels like the same words still keep me going. I can still feel the love from those who continue to support me.

When preparing for an album, you find yourself asking questions like “How can I show my true self?” and “What exactly are my strengths?” among others. For this particular DOOR album release, are there any specific questions you’ve asked yourself? And how were you able to answer those questions?

I’ve pondered more broadly on why these lyrics emerged and how such situations came to be, trying to view various scenarios from my own perspective. It was a complex but enjoyable experience. Unlike before, I focused more on “What situation am I in now?” rather than “How would I have felt?”. Through this process, I found answers to my past experiences and interpretations.

How did you work on displaying your vocals and emotions this time around for the tracks of DOOR? What do you do to relate with the lyrics you’re singing?

To convey empathy and emotion, I try to fully immerse myself as the protagonist of the song. When the song becomes my own story, I believe I can relate, interpret, and convey it in the most authentic way.

What lines/lyrics resonate with you, personally, the most?

In the song Dandelion, there’s a line: “Like a flower seed blooming white, let the wind carry away the sorrow.” This lyric resonates with me the most, as it reflects my desire to comfort people through my song.

CHEN

Since there’s a song on your album called PLAYLIST, I was wondering which songs are currently on your on-repeat playlist these days.

I’ve been listening to Benson Boone’s songs lately. I stumbled upon them through a photoshoot, and ever since, I’ve been actively seeking out and listening to more of his music.

Any final message to your fans, especially your supporters in the Philippines?

It’s heartwarming to always think of fans in the Philippines, who passionately show love and welcome me all the time. I want to express my gratitude for eagerly supporting and loving me, and I look forward to the day we can meet again. I hope all the fans in the Philippines stay happy and healthy until the day we meet again!

5 Life Lessons We’re Taking From Chelsea Manalo’s MUPH Journey

line
You dropped this queen 👑

Beyond the glitz and glam of Chelsea Manalo’s reign as the new Miss Universe Philippines are lessons from a young woman many can take to heart.

Related: Why Marina Summers Opening The Miss Universe Philippines Coronation Night Is More Revolutionary Than You Think

By now, you’ve probably heard about Chelsea Manalo becoming our new Miss Universe Philippines. Last May 22, the Bulacan queen bested 52 other aspirants to win Miss Universe Philippines 2024, and, in the process, became the first half-black Filipino to be named Miss Universe Philippines. Her win and journey weren’t just a moment for local pageant history though, but also broke barriers.

More importantly, Chelsea has an inspiring story that is not unlike what many Gen Z find themselves experiencing. No matter how her Miss Universe Philippines journey ends (and we do wish her the best), Chelsea is already a winner in our book in more ways than one. Below, we listed some of the life lessons we’re taking to heart from the Gen Z model, beauty queen, and youth advocate.

WHAT IS MEANT FOR YOU IS MEANT FOR YOU

CHELSEA MANALO

As cliche as it sounds, life really does find a way to redirect you to where you need to be. Just look at Chelsea. Growing up, she saw herself being a race car driver and found modeling almost by accident as a teenager. Over time, she learned to love the craft. Chelsea then made a splash in the pageant world when she placed in the Top 15 at Miss World Philippines 2017. Clearly, great things we’re still waiting for her.

During her run for Miss Universe Philippines 2024, Chelsea did have her fans and supporters but was seen more as the dark horse of the competition who didn’t often occupy the conversation when it came to front-runners. But a strong performance during the coronation night saw Chelsea beat out more talked-about queens to be crowned as Michelle Dee’s successor. So, take it from Chelsea Manalo and know that your calling will find you.

THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE WILLING TO SUPPORT YOU

CHELSEA MANALO

Life can be so lonely sometimes, especially when it feels like the world is out to get you at every turn. But at the end of the day, there will be those people who will offer a lending hand and be your guide, rock, and support system. In Chelsea’s case, it was her parents and core team who stood by her through thick and thin throughout the competition. It is these people that Chelsea credits as one of the main reasons why she decided to continue her MUPH journey.

When it seemed like she was on her last legs, Chelsea found strength from these loved ones and supporters who made her feel that she had what it takes, and clearly, she did. Feeling loved and supported can make a world of difference, whether it comes from your actual family or a found family who believes in what you have to offer.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE THE BEST TO BE THE BEST

CHELSEA MANALO

It needs to be said how daunting major national pageants like Miss Universe Philippines can be, not just physically, emotionally, and mentally, but also financially. This is something Chelsea has been vocal about in the past with how she ran into financial constraints during the competition, which almost led her to quit the whole thing.

Unlike some of her fellow delegates, Chelsea didn’t have access to the same vast wealth of resources and, at one point, resorted to buying clothes through online sellers for the competition. In a society that’s often run by the haves and have-nots, it can be intimidating to overcome that hurdle. But Chelsea did, and so can you, as long as you put your heart, soul, and passion into what you do.

WHAT SOME DEEM AS YOUR FLAWS CAN BE YOUR GREATEST STRENGTH

CHELSEA MANALO

INSTAGRAM/MANALOCHELSEA / PHOTO BY SEVEN BARRETTO

While progress has been made, many Filipinos still find themselves falling into the mindset of thinking that fairer skin is better and having a darker complexion is “ugly”. Chelsea is sadly no stranger to experiencing this prejudice. In the Bulacan native’s Her Story video, Chelsea shared that she was bullied as a kid for her skin color and hair.

This is something she also touched upon in her winning Q&A answer as she addressed the disadvantage women of darker complexion face when up against beauty standards many see as still beholden to Western ideals. “As a woman of color, I have always faced challenges in my life. I was told that beauty has a standard, actually. But for me, I have listened to—always believe in my mother, to always believe in yourself, to uphold the values that you have in yourself.

Seeing a woman like Chelsea, who is also an advocate for Indigenous young people’s education, win Miss Universe Philippines is all kinds of right. Chelsea found the power and strength to love herself for who she is. As the first Filipino-Black American winner of the pageant, she’s a sign to young people to unapologetically embrace who they are as all forms of beauty are valid.

DON’T GIVE UP

CHELSEA MANALO

INSTAGRAM/MANALOCHELSEA / PHOTO BY DOOKIE DUCAY

Yes, we’ve heard this time and time again, but there is power in the simple truth of not giving up. We almost lived in a timeline where our current Miss Universe Philippines would have dropped out because of financial troubles. But she persevered and pushed through, and look where she is now.

When the going gets tough, whether it be as simple as your school homework or as complex as a tough day at the office, it seems convenient to go the easy way out and just quit. This thinking though denies you a world of possibilities that could have been once you pass that dark tunnel. So, before you throw in the towel, think it through first because you never know what is waiting for you.

RAINBOW BALL 2024

Serve Your Way Into Pride Month With The Rainbow Ball And Gala 2024

line
It's going to be legendary.

The runway is ready and the categories are about to be open for the biggest edition of The Rainbow Ball And Gala yet.

Related: What It’s Like Attending A Ball In The Philippines, According To A First-Timer

Voguing and ballroom culture are, for lack of a better term, in vogue right now. TV shows like RuPaul’s Drag RaceLEGENDARY, and Pose have brought the art form to mainstream audiences while the recent world tours of Beyonce and Madonna took the ball to all four corners of the world. But more than just what the kids are talking about these days, voguing, and Ballroom Culture in general, has, is, and will continue to be a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community to be themselves.

It began in New York, created by Black and Latino queer and trans people in the 1960s, as a response to the bigotry, discrimination, and violence they experienced. Through events called “balls,” the Ballroom Community grew to be a place for members of the LGBTQIA+ community to find a home when others would not accept them all while expressing their identities and artistry.

This freedom to be and unapologetic self-expression and creativity is what The Rainbow Ball And Gala is celebrating just in time for Pride Month. Back for its 4th edition, the gathering of the local Ballroom community and its allies promises to be the biggest and most sickening yet.

CATEGORY IS PINOY PRIDE

In the Philippines, the Ballroom scene began in 2016 thanks to the efforts of the community’s Trailblazer, Mother Xyza Mizrahi. Since then, the local community has grown with the establishment of more and more houses and people walking balls as they find joy and heart in Ballroom. The Rainbow Ball And Gala 2024 is proof of that. Presented by Trailblazer Mother Xyza Mizrahi and Father Misha De La Blanca, the 4th Annual Rainbow Ball and Gala will be held at the Podium Hall, Podium Mall, Mandaluyong City. Quite fittingly, the event is scheduled for June 1, making for a great start to Pride Month.

As with any Ball, the Rainbow Ball And Gala aims to be an impactful platform for LGBTQIA+ Filipinos to express their creativity and advocacy through Ballroom. As such, this year’s theme is “PRIDE OF THE PHILIPPINES”, inviting guests to go back to our roots this Pride Month and celebrate the many facets that make us Filipinos. This is the local LGBTQIA+ community’s way to reclaim their heritage, Ballroom style.

The Ball starts at 5 PM and lasts well into the evening of the first Saturday of June. With 15 categories during the event, including Face, Beginners Performance, Lip Sync Performance, Realness, and Cunt versus Cunt, it’s going to be a showcase of Filipino culture meets Ballroom right at the start of Pride Month.

Through dance, fashion, drag, and more, the local Ballroom community, and the wider LGBTQIA+ community in general, will have a space to express, learn, contribute, and have the opportunity to flex their creativity and talents. And who will be giving the 10s and chops? Only the biggest panel of judges in The Rainbow Ball’s history comprised of Pioneers, Icons, and Legends from the global Ballroom scene, namely:

  • Pioneer Iconic Founding Father Andre Mizrahi, New York
  • Legendary Founding Father Julian De La Blanca, New York
  • Legendary Founding Father Monster Babylon, New York
  • Trailblazer Mother Bhenji Ra, Australia
  • Trailblazer Holie Ebony, Hong Kong
  • Father K Milan, Korea
  • Juju Xtravaganza, Korea

As for MCs, the Ball is going to be balling with these stars on the mic:

  • Icon Founder Jack Mizrahi Gorgeous Gucci, New York
  • Lakan Mizrahi, Philippines

Finally, prepare for the most gag-worthy beats from the night’s DJs:

  • Overall International Mother Koppi Mizrahi, Japan
  • Ayel Mari, Philippines

TENS ACROSS THE BOARD

What makes the 2024 edition extra special is that it is more than just a Ball, but a whole day event that celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community’s many colors. Also to be held at the Podium Hall, the festivities kick off at 1 PM with The Rainbow Gala. Local queer fashion takes center stage as four designers from The Philippine Ballroom Community will be showcasing mini-collections: Brit Tripudio (the first designer to feature Voguing in her Manila Fashion Fest show in 2017), Oz Go (Ozkur Mizrahi of The House of Mizrahi), Dale Sarmiento (Mother Dahlia Cleopatra of the Kiki House of Cleopatra), and custom leather harness brand WOLFE+HUNTR.

In a further nod to diversity, representation, and inclusion, the mini-fashion shows will feature models that all come from The Philippine Ballroom community. As a platform and opportunity for guests to learn about the stories and advocacies of the LGBTQIA+ community, the Gala will also feature mini-lectures from Advocacy Partners Trans Health Philippines, HASH, and Sail Clinic, to talk about important topics about the LGBTQIA+ community: trans health, SOGIE, and HIV Awareness.

The Gala then ends with an exclusive Ballroom 101 class featuring influential figures from the International Ballroom Scene, notably Pioneer Iconic Founding Father André Mizrahi and Legendary Founding Father Julian De La Blanca, as they share the rich history, creativity, and knowledge of Ballroom Culture. It then culminates with the Rainbow Ball. And the best part? You don’t have to be in the Ballroom community to go. Anyone is welcome to attend, enjoy, learn, and get their whole life while celebrating a special community.

If all this has gotten you excited, you can get tickets to The Rainbow Ball and Gala now on Helixpay, with tickets for Gala Only (“Araw” Pass), Ball Only (“Buwan” Pass), and Whole Day Pass (“Bahaghari” Pass) available. Special merchandise in collaboration with artist JER DEE is also available on the Helixpay storefront, along with opportunities to donate to The Rainbow Ball Community Fund. Tickets to the special workshops with The Rainbow Ball’s international guests can be availed here.

Darren Espanto Takes Us Through How To Make It To 10 Years Doing What You Love

line
On memories, mentors, and making it.

It takes a village, and handfuls of grit, to make it ten years under the spotlight, and as Darren Espanto celebrates this milestone, he’s not letting up.

Related: 7 Of Darren Espanto’s Best Songs That You Need To Add To Your Playlist ASAP

No one ever said living most of your life in front of blinding lights and cameras that only seem to grow in size and number is the most comfortable existence. But those dedicated to pursuing their dreams have to give up a thing or two sometimes—and sometimes, they know this straight out of the gate.

For one artist, who’s celebrating a decade in the music, acting, and hosting industry this year, navigating the world of showbiz means being prepared for all the glitter and grime, managing your expectations, and surrounding yourself with good people.

Such insight at 23 years of age isn’t surprising, given how long Darren Espanto has been singing, dancing, and performing here in the Philippines and even abroad. Through the years, the Filipino-Canadian artist and The Voice Kids Philippines alum has grown from being a coiffed 13-year old singing contestant to a seasoned multi-hyphenate artist. And his career shows no sign of slowing down.

MAPPING TEN YEARS

darren espanto stephen tanhueco d10 concert can't buy me love

“It hasn’t felt like it’s been ten years,” he says. “But when I look back and see everything I’ve done, I’m like, ‘oh yeah, it’s definitely been ten years.'” Darren Espanto sits across from us one afternoon in May, busy in between schedules but engaged nonetheless. Besides preparing for his ten-year anniversary concert D10, the artist just performed with Gary Valenciano at the industry veteran’s concert that weekend, and was also busy hosting noontime variety show It’s Showtime almost every day.

He also just wrapped filming romantic drama Can’t Buy Me Love (2023-2024), where he starred as Stephen Tanhueco, a wealthy young man vying for the affection of Caroline (Belle Mariano), who’s in love with Bingo (Donny Pangilinan). Busy as he is, Darren takes the time to reminisce on his work as a child star, acting on Canadian TV and singing on reality shows.

Urged and supported by his parents whether back in Calgary or here in Manila, he’s been singing and performing basically since he could walk. At ten years old, he auditioned for YTV reality show The Next Star Season 5 (2012), and made it as a Top 6 finalist. The year after that, he guested on teen sitcom Life With Boys—a show with clips that pop up on social media every now and then.

“When I look back at clips like that, parang grabe, I can say that my 11-year old self—that we kind of made it.” He clarifies he’s not embarrassed about it—all that got him to where he is now—but he still cringes. From his voice to his acting, his skills are far more refined now. And though it seems daunting to be thrust into the spotlight so young, what with the insane schedules and the amount of work that had to be put in, he knew what he was signing up for.

“I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else,” he shakes his head. “Because music really is my passion. And I’ve always loved to sing. I’ve always loved to perform.”

THE HARD PART

darren espanto stephen tanhueco d10 concert can't buy me love

Though something he’s wanted for a very long time, making it in the industry did not come without its fair share of hurdles. Starting his singing career very young, Darren had to overcome puberty right in the public eye. In his mid-to late-teens, the singer found himself having to adjust performances to his changing voice, once able to cut through songs like Chandelier or Domino. “Eventually,” he shares, “I just stopped singing songs that I wanted to sing, because I was so scared to be risking performances where I wasn’t sure if I could hit [certain] notes or not.”

His safe space became ASAP Natin ‘To, which allowed him to perform in a way he was comfortable with. He ventured into dancing more, as well. But soon enough, he adjusted and went back to his roots, singing ballads like his original Sasagipin Kita. He found new techniques and learned from others that he could use his rounder, more soulful voice to his advantage.

An artist’s fear of having to let go of what they knew was their comfort zone can easily be attributed to their knowledge of how ruthless and relentless people can be when they criticize.

“You have to have the mentality to be able to overcome bashing,” he muses. “Have a strong soul. Because that’s really one of the major things, especially now because of social media, people are so easy to judge you or spit out their comments without even knowing the facts.”

“Growing up in Canada, I’d see all of these young celebrities being criticized for anything they would do,” Darren continues. “And then I became one of them. So I was like, ‘oh, this is what you wanted, Darren. So this is what you signed up for.‘ And it’s something that never really surprised me. I knew that there’s going to be criticism. I knew there would be bashing included. You’re not going to be able to please everyone all the time.”

Something he’s honed over the years is a realistic perspective that grounds him, but also lets him push forward. He admits to having learned to lower his expectations so as not to be disappointed, but to always expect the unexpected. “There are things that you will want and you won’t always get,” he says. “Which is a part of life. Not even just in the industry—it’s a part of life. But you have to have the confidence to be able to still do what you want to do.”

Since he was a kid, Darren’s been dreaming of signing autographs and starring in TV series and movies aside from just performing. And he’s been able to dip his toes into all of these ventures because of that confidence—and a network of support. “It’s nice to have people trust you to do all these things at once.”

IT TAKES A VILLAGE

darren espanto stephen tanhueco d10 concert can't buy me love

If you’ve watched the young artist on noontime TV, it’s clear that Darren’s wit and charm comes through in his hosting, making him a welcome addition to It’s Showtime. It’s not a façade, rather a combination of his personality and all of the influences and inspirations that have helped him become the person he is.

“I grew up surrounded by hosts, as well,” he says, referring to personalities like Robi Domingo and Luis Manzano. “I would kind of get the ‘hosting energy’ from them.” He recounts how they would always be open to his questions, giving him tips and feedback. Robi himself would critique his hosting work, which Darren appreciates. “I would rather have that kind of straight up constructive criticism than for me to be always told na, ‘ah, okay ka, okay ka.‘”

His idols have become his mentors beyond the stage and the screen. They teach him the lay of the land and the tricks to not just make it, but to keep him going, grounded and driven despite what may come his way. It’s a stacked network of support he’s got—and he’s never anything less than grateful. From music production to assuring him his purpose is to sing, these mentors have constantly guided and supported him, even when doubt creeps in.

“That’s something I always remember,” he says of advice he’s learned from Gary V. “‘Don’t lose that drive.’ It’s okay to get burnt out, to be overwhelmed. Pero at the end of the day, always remember why you started this in the first place.”

There’s no better showcase of these relationships he’s built over the last ten years than his D10 concert, which features six special guests—all of whom have made an impact on Darren’s life and vice versa. “I’m very blessed to have these people in my life,” he reiterates. Gary V, Sarah Geronimo, Ogie Alcasid, Erik Santos, Vice Ganda, and Lyca Gairanod will be joining the artist on his anniversary concert, making it not just a grand show, but a fitting celebration of his journey so far.

CLEARING NEW PATHS

darren espanto stephen tanhueco d10 concert can't buy me love

Looking back, Darren realizes that the pressure he was under as he grew up in the spotlight wasn’t ideal. “Parang hindi mo na na-eenjoy kung ano yung meron ka.” But here and now, he’s more conscious of where he’s going, growing wiser every day.

Although Darren has kept his dreams close to his heart for over ten years now, he’s open to new ones. And he doesn’t let up. Looking ahead, he shares that he wants to finish college somewhere down the line (“Maybe something in business.”), do more international music and acting projects, and—this one sooner rather than later—go on a mini vacation after his concert. And yeah, he deserves it.

The Darren Espanto of today is a far cry from the young kid belting it out on the The Voice Kids stage in 2014, though they share the same eyes full of ambition. If he were to send a message to that kid from ten years ago, (which ends up a fitting reminder for the Darren of today), it would be to “Stay driven. Don’t lose that passion in you. You’re here na nga, eh—ngayon ka pa ba titigil?”

“Boring” Is Nowhere Near XG’s Vocabulary This 2024

line
XG in their rap era.

With their recently released first all-rap single and embarking on their first world tour, XG continues to give that jolt of excitement we have come to love them for.

Related: Why XG Is The Rookie Girl Group That You Need To Add To Your Playlist ASAP

If 2023 was XG’s breakthrough moment, 2024 looks to be the year the seven-member girl group, composed of members JURIN, CHISA, HINATA, HARVEY, JURIA, MAYA, and COCONA, solidify their status as one of the it girl groups on the scene. Following the release of their collaboration single with VALORANT, UNDEFEATED, last April, the girls came in hard when they dropped their first solo song of 2024 and first all-rap single, WOKE UP. True to what many have come to love XG for, the track is unlike any they’ve released, yet is filled with the type of confidence you’d expect from seniors in the industry.

WOKE UP LOOKING LIKE THIS

Given the impressive set of pipes the group has, WOKE UP is a noted departure, one that CHISA shared was a bit of a challenge to her. Yet, thanks to the help of the rap line, she was able to immerse herself even more in the experience. “[G]etting to see it through their eyes really helps me see it differently and pay more respect to what they are able to do,” CHISA reveals to NYLON Manila.

XG

WOKE UP’s fusion of 808 bass and distinct East Asian elements puts XG on that all-rounder status. And while the track may be a departure from what we’ve heard from XG these past couple of years, it does harken to their hip-hop roots. “[W]e wanted to tap into that hip-hop identity, which then became our first release of the year,” explains Cocona. Of course, no XG release is complete without a music video, with WOKE UP’s MV showing the girls transform into fierce wolves, challenging stereotypes and boundaries. From the storyline, visuals, looks, and more, the MV is equal parts mystical and awe-inspiring,

THE FIRST HOWL IS COMING

This level of serving is what XG is taking with them on their first world tour “XG 1st WORLD TOUR ‘The first HOWL’”. “[T]here’s a lot of different performances and experiences that fans have never seen before,” teases HINATA on what fans can expect from the tour. Kicking off in Osaka, Japan last May 18 and 19, The first HOWL will make a stop in Manila this August 2 at the Araneta Coliseum, a development both Filipino ALPHAZ ( the name of XG’s fandom) and the group themselves are ecstatic about.

XG

Also, HARVEY points out that it isn’t just performing to Filipino fans that has gotten her excited for the trip. “I also understand that there are a lot of very historical buildings and architecture in the city of Manila, so I’m looking forward to, if time allows, just taking a stroll through the city with the rest of my members and kind of sharing this romantic moment together.”

Before the release of WOKE UP, we got the chance to speak to XG as they opened up about their new release, world tour, meeting their Filipino fans, and more. Read what they had to say below.

WOKE UP is described as your first all-rap song. What was your experience like working on the track and getting to focus solely on rapping?

CHISA: For me specifically, I usually do vocals, so I’ve always wanted to rap and having done it through this track, it was a lot of fun, but it was also challenging since it was too hard to do it because I know a lot of other members who rap all the time, thinking about this is what they’re doing, this is what they’re experiencing every single time, getting to see it through their eyes really helps me see it differently and pay more respect to what they are able to do. So continuing to evolve XG and becoming just an all rounder as a member of XG, to me, was very fulfilling.

Given how different WOKE UP is from your past releases, why did you decide to make it your first solo single release of 2024?

COCONA: As XG, we’ve sung many different types of tracks and genres in a way, but a lot of our roots go back to hip-hop and R&B. Last December, we released a single, WINTER WITHOUT YOU, which focused on a more R&B-type of vibe and sound. So with WOKE UP, we wanted to tap into that hip-hop identity, which then became our first release of the year.

XG

Your Filipino ALPHAZ are excited to see you when you come to Manila this year. Is there anything you’re looking forward to in Manila?

HARVEY: Of course, we’re very, very excited to see our FILIPINO ALPAHZ in person and being able to share the same space and enjoy the experience of delivering our music to them directly is what I’m looking forward to the most, but I also understand that there’s a lot of very historical buildings and architecture in the city of Manila, so I’m looking forward to if time allows, just taking a stroll through the city with the rest of my members and kind of sharing this romantic moment together.

What can fans expect from your first world tour?

HINATA: So this time around, there’s a lot of different performances and experiences that fans have never seen before. So I hope everyone kind of stays excited and somewhat anxious to experience it firsthand.

How would you say your relationship has grown since you first came together as a group? How would you describe your dynamic with each other?

JURIA: I would say that we’ve spent the better part of six years together. Ever since we were trainees we’ve lived together, trained together, so we’ve formed this very, very strong bond over the years. So I can almost look into anyone’s eyes and understand what they’re trying to say. So I think we’ve gotten really, really close.

XG

With all the new attention you’ve been receiving, does that add more pressure to what you do?

MAYA: Well I would say that rather than feeling a lot of pressure, it’s more of showing more and more of what we can do and want to as well as delivering unique and impactful performances, showing our level-uped sides to our ALPAHZ.

With your music and presence as a global girl group, what message would you like to impart on your fans?

HINATA: Through our music, I hope we can impart onto our fans these ideas of love and hope and infinity in some ways, and that our music is able to carry that message and theme to the fans and we can share that.

XG

What does it mean to be Xtraordinary Girls?

MAYA: To be Xtraordinary Girls means to break free from boundaries and norms and staying true to ourselves and pushing forward and our motto is to empower people from diverse backgrounds worldwide through our music and performance style.

What message do you have for your Filipino ALPHAZ?

JURIN: To all the ALPHAZ in the Philippines, thank you so much for always supporting us and giving us your energy. We really can’t wait to see you guys in person and share that moment together.

Did You Catch These Filipinos Who’ve Appeared In International Netflix Movies And Shows

line
Filipinos popping up in every universe.

From small cameos to major characters, here are some Pinoys you might have missed in your favorite Netflix series and movies.

Related: 11 Filipino Stars Who’ve Appeared In Hollywood Productions

You know that GIF of Leonardo DiCaprio pointing at the TV screen? Yeah, that one. That’s how we react whenever we spot a Filipino actor or character in a Netflix movie or show. Over the years, the streaming and content company has made strides to champion local talent and stories, such as in Trese and Replacing Chef Chico. Netflix Philippines, in particular, has a great track record of imagining Filipino celebrities, pop icons, and culture in global Netflix projects with their marketing campaigns.

But when it comes to quite a few international productions, there’s no imagining here as quite a few movies and series have featured Filipino talent and characters, either in background roles or major players. They make for small but helpful steps towards better representation of Filipinos on the global scene. Scroll down for the Pinoy Netflix moments you may have missed.

MARTHA MILAN IN THE GENTLEMEN

@netflixph Aba, si mareng Mercy pala ito… #thegentlemen #theojames #guyritchie #netflix #netflixseries #fyp ♬ original sound – Netflix Philippines

This Guy Ritchie crime drama series is, in typical Guy Ritchie fashion, filled with eccentric characters. And one of those is Filipino gangster Mercy, played by Filipino-Australian actress Martha Milan. No spoilers here, but let’s just say Mercy leaves a memorable mark on the show. If that wasn’t enough, the series also includes Filipino rapper Zae’s Baddest MF in its OST.

JAMES BRADWELL AND MARTIN SARREAL IN BRIDGERTON SEASON 3

NETFLIX FILIPINO

Bridgerton, despite its setting, is known for its diverse cast of characters. So, it was only a matter of time before we got some Filipino representation on the hit show. And that moment came in the form of two Filipino Lords in season 3 of the series. The first is Lord Basilio, played by James Bradwell. The actor shared that when he first auditioned for the role, it was for a character with East Asia heritage, but he had it changed to reflect his Filipino roots. Also in season three, we meet another member of Filipino nobility named Lord Barnell, played by Martin Sarreal.

HUNTER ROMANILLOS IN STRANGER THINGS SEASON 4

NETFLIX FILIPINO

Despite being a small town, Hawkins, Indiana sure has a diverse population. In the fourth season of the popular series, we are introduced to bully athlete Jason Carver, and among his teammates is Chance, played by Fil-Am actor Hunter Romanillos. Fun fact, aside from Stranger Things, the actor also appeared in another major franchise, the MCU, where he had an uncredited role as a high school student in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

CHRISTIAN LAGAHIT IN SPACE SWEEPERS AND SQUID GAME

NETFLIX PINOY

While many Filipinos dream of one day being in a K-drama, Christian Lagahit is living it with his bit roles in K-dramas over the years. And some of his projects include major Netflix productions. He played the role of a restaurant clerk who speaks Tagalog to Song Joong-ji’s character in the sci-fi film Space Sweepers. But most remember him as Player 276 in the pop culture behemoth Squid Game. With no speaking lines, Player 276 is assumed to be Filipino, but lore-wise, he’s actually an illegal immigrant from Pakistan who hopes to pay off his debt at home by participating in the games.

NOREEN JOYCE GUERRERA IN ALL OF US ARE DEAD

Real K-drama fans know who Noreen Joyce Guerrera is. Name a high-profile K-drama, and chances are this Filipina actress has been in it. Her extensive resume of background characters includes Netflix’s hit Korean zombie series All Of Us Are Dead. In episode one, she plays a student at Hyosan High who holds her backpack in front of her. Very Pinoy behavior if we do say so ourselves. While she is only featured in background shots and has no speaking lines, we hope she made it out safe during the outbreak.

MARK PAGUIO IN SPIDERHEAD

2022’s Spiderhead featured a pretty stacked cast that included Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller. But you might have missed another key player in the form of Mark Verlaine, Steve Abnesti’s righthand man, played by Filipino actor Mark Paguio.

REGGIE LEE, KATRINA ROSITA, AND JEFF FRANCISCO IN THE LINCOLN LAWYER

Filipino fans of the Netflix drama series The Lincoln Lawyer were in for a treat for season one as one of the show’s recurring plotlines revolved around Angelo Soto, an intimidating and wealthy businessman who faced an investigation by the District Attorney’s office for alleged human trafficking. That character was brought to life by Filipino-American actor Reggie Lee, who shared in an interview his delight at getting to speak Tagalog in the series. Joining Lee in the season were Filipino actors Katrina Rosita, who played Tanya Cruz, Soto’s girlfriend, and Jeff Francisco, who played Alvin Aquino, a parolee affiliated with Soto.

GLORIA DIAZ IN INSATIABLE

As one of the most pageant-obsessed countries in the world, it was only right for Netflix to cast a Filipina to play a pageant veteran. And who did they get? Only former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz, who was tapped to play Gloria Reyes, a former beauty queen turned pageant coach, in the second season of the dark comedy series Insatiable

Girl Group tripleS Is Ready To Take A Journey Of Endless Possibilities

line
The more the merrier.

Meet 24-member global girl group tripleS, who take collaboration to a whole new dimension.

Related: Meet Me&, The Hong Kong Girl Group Primed To Go Global

You think you’ve got a grasp of K-pop’s sub-unit concepts? Think WJSN’s, EXO’s, NCT’s, SEVENTEEN’s, and others groups’ sub-unit concepts were a piece of cake to follow? Well, then, this girl group shouldn’t be a problem for you.

South Korea-based multinational girl group tripleS was formed by record label MODHAUS, and aims to be the first decentralized K-pop idol group. With 24 members and eight subunits (so far), tripleS will make music and perform in a variety of combinations. Members will rotate between working with the full group, in sub-units, and even as soloists.

The group debuted its first sub-unit Acid Angel from Asia in 2022, with members Hyerin, Yooyeon, Nakyoung, and Yubin releasing an EP titled Access. Sub-units +(Kr)ystal Eyes, Acid Eyes (a combination of the first two units), Lovelution, Evolution, ballad unit Aria, NXT, and upcoming unit Glow followed, with new members being announced over the last two years until they’ve completely revealed all 24 members.

Currently, the lineup consists of South Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese-Vietnamese, and Thai members from 15 to 23 years old. Each one has an “S number” given to them in order of debut, from S1 to S24. Namely, they are Seoyeon, Hyerin, Jiwoo, Chaeyeon, Yooyeon, Soomin, Nakyoung, Yubin, Kaede, Dahyun, Kotone, Yeonji, Nien, Sohyun, Xinyu, Mayu, Lynn, Joobin, Hayeon, Shion, Chaewon, Sullin, Seoah, and Jiyeon.

With their lineup being complete, tripleS officially debuted as a full team—Avengers: Endgame style—this May 2024 with their first full album Assemble24, with the title track Girls Never Die. They even cinched their first music show win on Korean music show The Show and had an emotional encore on a stage that has not seen that many artists from one group before.

tripleS’ sheer number and sub-unit concepts aren’t the only thing unique about them. They promote a special collaboration with their fans, WAV, as they let WAV have the power to vote and ultimately decide on tripleS’ sub-unit combinations and proposed concepts and music. By purchasing NFT tokens called Objekts on their app Cosmo, fans are able to let tripleS know what they’d like to see from the girl group.

With so many members and a unique fan-participation concept, it’s fun to think about the many ways they could go with their music and performance. You have to wonder, though, with so many ideas and perspectives—not just theirs—how they’re able to let everyone be heard and shine on their own amongst two dozen members. Well, you can find out as we get to know tripleS through our exclusive interview below.

tripleS kpop girl group

Congratulations on your debut! What was it like to finally debut as a full team?

Mayu: This time we are back as a complete group, and it’s really not easy or common to have all 24 members active together, so I’m extremely happy. I also want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported us. I think this activity is a great opportunity to introduce tripleS to more people, so I want to keep working hard until the end!

Jiwoo: Two years have finally come to an end, and with the thought of a new beginning, I’ve been feeling excited lately!

Yeonji: After a long wait of two years from S1 to S24, I’m thrilled and amazed that all 24 members have finally come together for a complete debut!

Shion: At first, I couldn’t believe it, but as we started doing music shows, it really hit me that we were actually broadcasting as 24 members. I thought, “This is just the beginning,” and resolved to work even harder moving forward.

tripleS kpop girl group global girl group shion modhaus 24 member girl group

Congratulations on your first win on THE SHOW, as well! How did you celebrate?

Jiwoo: We were so happy that we hugged each other tightly backstage. After finishing our work, since there are so many members, we had separate celebration times in each dorm to catch up on the congratulations we missed. Most of the members seemed to have “meat parties.”

What does your title track Girls Never Die mean to you?

Yeonji: This song gave me courage. The lyrics, like “Get up even if you fall,” made me think, “Should I try one more time?” during moments when I felt so exhausted that I wanted to give up.

What was your reaction when you found out you would debut in a 24-member supergroup?

Mayu: When I first heard about the 24 members, honestly, at that time, not even half of the members had been revealed yet, so I didn’t know who I would be working with. I was anxious about how I could stand out among so many people. However, on the flip side, I was also excited about the various units we could form with such a large group and the opportunity to meet new combinations of members in the future.

tripleS kpop girl group global girl group shion modhaus 24 member girl group

What do you think is the advantage of having this many members?

Shion: We can create diverse stage performances, and the group choreography looks amazing. Also, since there are many members, each with their own unique charm, there’s always a new attraction to discover. I feel reassured wherever we go because we are all together.

Your group has a special relationship with fans, because they get the chance to choose the sub-units and content by voting. What is that experience like?

Yeonji: During the subunit voting period, there’s always excitement and tension because I don’t know which unit I’ll end up in until the fans finish voting.

tripleS kpop girl group global girl group shion modhaus 24 member girl group

How do you deal with disagreements among the group and how do you make sure all members know that they are being listened to and supported?

Mayu: Since there are many members, we often make decisions by majority vote. However, the older members usually organize our ideas and discussions from the group chat. We try to communicate with each other as much as possible.

What do you think is the importance of a good relationship with your members or teammates in making sure you do your best with your music and performances?

Jiwoo: I believe that the closer we are, the more we can build deeper and stronger bonds through conversation. By incorporating diverse opinions, we can come up with new and better ideas, resulting in more complete and high-quality outcomes. A good relationship within the team not only has this kind of influence but also positively impacts our passion and determination, encouraging each other.

tripleS kpop girl group global girl group shion modhaus 24 member girl group

What are some things that newer members of tripleS learned from members that have already been in the group since 2022?

Shion: I’ve learned so many diverse things from the members who have been active since 2022. They have helped me a lot with how to behave in group activities and broadcasts, how to show love to the fans, and pretty gestures for taking photos.

What are some new experiences you want to have with your fellow tripleS members?

Yeonji: I want to showcase the various musical styles and concepts that we haven’t been able to show yet through new unit combinations. Since we are a group where subunit combinations and title tracks are decided by fan votes, we are looking forward to our fans creating interesting combinations.

tripleS kpop girl group global girl group shion modhaus 24 member girl group

What K-variety show do you want to appear in and why?

Jiwoo: There are sooo many things! Personally, I grew up watching a program called Running Man, and I always had a fascination with not only the name tag ripping but also the various games they played. With 24 members, which is the size of a class, and TripleS often doing school concepts, I really want to try shows like Knowing Bros or Amazing Saturday, where we can show our new charms. I want to try all these variety shows!

What do you want to say to your fans (WAV)?

Mayu: To our beloved WAV! Finally, we can debut as a complete 24-member group, which we’ve been eagerly waiting for, and I believe it’s all thanks to the unwavering love and support from WAV. We’ve worked hard together, so please give a lot of love to Girls Never Die! Always cheer for us, love us, and thank you so much. Please stay with us until the end of this promotion as well. We love you, WAV~~~.
