Where does Kyle Echarri get his coffee? Right here in Manila, just as he sings during the PICKUP COFFEE PICKUP App launch event. Coffee brand PICKUP COFFEE recently picked up the actor and singer as their new endorser, and hard-launched him during the launch party for their new app.
If you didn’t know, PICKUP COFFEE is known for their espresso-based beverages at low price points, their distinct green-and-white carts and stalls, and their accessibility. Now, in a new step for the brand, PICKUP COFFEE launched their own app that makes it even more convenient to get your drinks on the go. To celebrate the milestone, they held an event that saw guests, fans, and Kyle himself enjoy a coffee-filled afternoon. We’ve got for you a rundown what went down as well as the features to expect in their new app.
PICKER-UPPER KYLE ECHARRI
If you were at SM Megamall Mega Atrium on April 18 and saw a flash of green smack-dab in the middle of the mall, surrounded by screaming fans, that was the PICKUP COFFEE app and endorser launch with Kyle himself. The area was decked out in the signature PICKUP COFFEE green and white, had two PICKUP Coffee stalls where everyone could grab a drink, a snack bar, and claw machines.
After attendees grabbed a free coffee from the PICKUP COFFEE stalls, they also munched on some snacks and tried their hand at the claw machine for a chance to win some goodies. The much-awaited star of the show soon came onstage to speak a little bit about being chosen as PICKUP COFFEE’s new endorser and perform a couple songs, much to the delight of his fans.
“I get my coffee from Manila,” he sings over the melody as he covered Peaches by Justin Bieber. He also performed his song Fuego. After the performance, five lucky fans got the chance to meet and take a photo with Kyle on stage, barely containing their excitement.
”We are incredibly thrilled to have Kyle join our PICKUP Family as we launch our PICKUP App,” PICKUP Representatives VP of Marketing Bien Lee and Marketing Head of Consumer Business Matteo Gancayco stated. “Alongside Kyle, we will continue to maximize the PICKUP App to improve how we provide convenience, value, and rewards for our beloved customers.”
PICK UP DEALS
The PICKUP App offers beverages from ₱50 to ₱95 (base prices)—and they’ve got a selection of well-loved classics like the Iced Caramel Macchiato to more unique drinks like the Watermelon Latte. While PICKUP Coffee is available on delivery apps, the new PICKUP App offers speed, more deals, and more rewards.
By ordering on the app, you can skip lines and just pick up your order at the nearest branch when it notifies that it’s ready. When you top up on the app, you can even score some deals for up to 50% off your orders on it. There’s also a rewards feature where you can collect stamps and exchange them for items like a PICKUP Tote and Planner. In a nice touch, your first purchase on the app also gets you one free drink. And, as a bonus, Kyle’s face is plastered all over the app. Major picker-upper. You can download the app on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

Remember when it was a popular saying in high school that liking bands was “just a phase”? Well obviously, those people have not heard of Boys Like Girls. The phenomenal band just gave us a show of a lifetime last April 20 at the Araneta Coliseum, which was the perfect opportunity to dust off our band shirts and pitch-black accessories in a celebration of eternal youth. Missed the show? Don’t worry, we got you covered. Here are a few moments from the night that will forever solidify the place of Boys Like Girls in our lives.
We could not think of a better opener than We The Kings, the perfect fusion of vibrance and nostalgia. Singing their hit songs like Check, Yes Juliet, and Sad Song, not a single minute of the show was bland as everyone thought back to a ~certain~ phase in their lives. Additional points for singing two of the biggest songs on the same wavelength: Wonderwall by Oasis and Mr. Brightside by The Killers.
The audience’s enthusiasm was palpable. It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that everyone in that venue knew every single word of the songs. It was like a massive karaoke session, with the band providing the live accompaniment. The concert was a true celebration of Boys Like Girls’ music and felt like a united Philippine fan party.
If you were there, you’d know that Boys Like Girls’ energy was insane and unstoppable. They were singing the beautifully curated setlist one song after another with no breaks or talking in-between. It seemed like we were on Spotify Premium, with no interruptions at all as the momentum just kept on going. Constant throwing of guitar picks from here and there, the show was one for the books.
Not the soundtrack of our summer, but quite literally the soundtrack of our life. No one can beat the nostalgic beauty of their song Thunder as the Big Dome was one in screaming out the lyrics to this iconic anthem. The highly anticipated track carried its weight as everyone was brought back to the melodrama of the 2000s.
— Manila Concert Junkies (@mnlcncertjunkie) April 20, 2024
The setlist was a perfect mix of their most iconic songs from the past, plus some of their new material that we’re obviously still tuning into. No matter what song in whatever era the band performs, you bet we will be screaming our lungs out to sing along.
Mosh Pit Away From the Mosh Pit
#BOYSLIKEGIRLSinMANILA2024 was everything and more! 🎉 Thank you, BOYS LIKE GIRLS for taking us on a nostalgic journey and bringing us back to our younger selves! 🤘 Finally seeing you live was a dream come true for all the fans here! pic.twitter.com/Eh4Gzpubcc
One of the cutest moments from the night was Boys Like Girls performing their hit song The Great Escape twice. For the first one, the band allowed phones and recordings. But for the second one, it was just the audience and the band, a sweet and intimate connection in the midst of thousands of people enjoying their tunes. Every corner of the Araneta Coliseum seemed like a mosh pit with people jumping and living their lives to the fullest—an absolutely monumental scene.
— Manila Concert Junkies (@mnlcncertjunkie) April 20, 2024
Just when everyone thought the show had come to an end, vocalist Martin Johnson came back on stage with an acoustic guitar. It seemed like everyone had already been anticipating what was about to happen as the Big Dome lit up with phone flashlights. The crowd was ready for Two Is Better Than One. One word to describe the moment: magical. It was the perfect song to wrap up that rave of a night with everyone carrying a mental photograph of one of the most ~metal~ moments of their lives forever.
When we think of K-pop idols, we usually imagine near-perfect people with impeccable face cards and world-class skills in singing, dancing, and performing. Admittedly though, the industry has also helped perpetuate a certain standard that is often unattainable for many and even unhealthy to keep up for many idols. But over time, some are helping break the rigid barriers of what it means to be a K-pop idol, and one rookie group doing so is Big Ocean.
Last April 20, the boy group made the rounds on social media with their debut as the first hearing-impaired boy group in K-pop. It’s an impressive feat not just for greater representation in the genre, but also because the group isn’t letting their impairment stop them from following their dreams. Here are a few facts you should know about the newest K-pop group on the scene that’s got people talking.
THEY ARE A THREE-MEMBER BOY GROUP
INSTAGRAM/BIG_OCEAN.OFFICIAL
Big Ocean is a three-member boy group composed of Park Hyunjin (24, main vocal), Lee Chanyeon (26, main rapper), and Kim Jiseok (21, maknae and main dancer). All three suffered hearing loss when they were young and use implants and hearing aids to communicate. They are currently signed to Parastar Entertainment, a company that specializes in finding and representing artists with disabilities. Before their debut, the trio used to go by S-Boyz, but changed their name to Big Ocean, which reflects their dream to “one day spread hope and positive energy.”
THE MEMBERS HAD FULL-TIME JOBS BEFORE BECOMING IDOLS
INSTAGRAM/BIG_OCEAN.OFFICIAL
We often hear stories of K-pop idols becoming trainees as early as when they were kids. But that wasn’t the case for Big Ocean. Before becoming trainees, all of them had full-time jobs and careers. Park Hyunjin used to work at a cafe and had a YouTube channel where he documented what his life was like living with disabilities. Lee Chanyeon, fittingly enough, used to work at the Korea University Anam Hospital as an audiologist, someone who deals with hearing disorders.
Kim Jiseok, meanwhile, got his start in modeling and was a former member of the Seoul Disabled Ski Association as a ski racer. Fun fact: Jiseok graduated from the Seoul Samsung School, a school that specializes in teaching the deaf, which BTS’ RM donated to in 2019. It was because of this donation that helped Jiseok to enter music.
THEIR DEBUT FELL ON A SPECIAL DAY
April 20 isn’t just any regular day. In Korea, it’s celebrated as Disabled Person’s Day. So, as the first hearing-impaired K-pop group hoping to break the stigma and prejudices towards people in the community, it felt correct that Big Ocean made their debut that day. With their debut in the books, Big Ocean aims to create a new genre called S-pop (sign language pop). To that end, they incorporated Korean Sign Language, American Sign Language, and International Sign Language into their performances, a welcome move for their hearing-impaired fans. They uploaded a Korean Sign Language guide of their debut song on their YouTube channel if you’d like to learn it.
THEIR DEBUT IS A REMAKE OF A H.O.T SONG
INSTAGRAM/BIG_OCEAN.OFFICIAL
Big Ocean made their debut with the track Glow. And in case you didn’t know, Glow is a remake of K-pop group H.O.T’s track Hope, which was initially released in 1998. With the song’s inspirational message, it’s a good start for Big Ocean as their modern remake hits the right notes.
THEY HAVE SYSTEMS IN PLACE WHEN IT COMES TO PRACTICING, PERFORMING, AND RECORDING
INSTAGRAM/BIG_OCEAN.OFFICIAL
Understandably, Big Ocean doesn’t operate like most K-pop groups do. As such, their company incorporated a series of changes to accommodate the guys. According to Korea Now, Big Ocean uses visuals whenever they practice to help them keep on beat. When they record music, they use AI technology to help mix their voices properly. Also, when they perform on stage, the members stay on beat with the help of special watches they wear that vibrate on each beat.
A house? In this economy? Well, yes! Kathryn Bernardo checks off another win in her life as she recently christened her new dream home—a spacious, contemporary, and green-filled house in Rizal that’s the stuff of modern fairytales. It’s got a fresh, contemporary interior, a pool, a huge backyard, a slide, lots of light and art, stunning views, and so much more. What a dream.
The young actress has been working on the house with LINO Architecture for years now, making it reflective of her tastes and preferences, and this year, she’s officially moved in. Through her team and guests, we got a glimpse of some of the features, details, and decor of Kathryn’s house that have us ooh-ing and ahh-ing. Check them out below.
ALL THAT LIGHT

Big windows, big doorways, big outdoor spaces…they all allow for what is arguably a non-negotiable for many people: good light. Kathryn’s house, though boasting plenty of shade due to all the greenery, also seems to let a good amount of light in, keeping the spaces bright and photoshoot-ready at all times.
People have different preferences for their home. Some people like it big and sprawling, and some people like it cozy and easy to maintain. Kathryn’s new house seems to be a balance of both, with plenty of space to host guests—like during her star-studded housewarming—and plenty of room for her to make use of as time goes by.
ALL THAT GREENERY

From the house’s entrance to the backyard, all the green that fills up the space of the Bernardo home is a delight to see. It’s relaxing, stress-relieving, and just downright beautiful, among other benefits. When Kathryn hosted her housewarming, with a long banquet table in the backyard surrounded by so many lights and plants, it looked like it was straight out of a fairytale. The setup was the brainchild of events stylist Gideon Hermosa and his team, and they killed it, highlighting and enhancing the features of the house.
A HOME BAR
screencap from ig/gideonhermosa
We wonder if Kathryn’s friends have been texting her can I come over just to hang out? after seeing her house. We can’t blame them! The bar alone is restaurant-worthy, stocked, spacious, and totally ready for a party.
A GIANT SLIDE
may slide sa bahay nina kath i guess for the kids and kids at heart it’s so fun I LOVE IT pic.twitter.com/Hs0rk4lE3D
For the kids and kids-at-heart. If you’re not feeling like taking the stairs, no worries! Kathryn’s house features a huge red slide that runs right beside a staircase—for the days where you just need a quick pick-me-up (or a speedier way down).
A GRAND STAIRCASE
screencap from ig/gideonhermosa
Speaking of stairs, the main staircase in the entryway or living room is a wide, winding staircase reminiscent of grand mansions and palaces—but with a modern twist. The smooth, dark wooden stringers and glass panels are clean and contemporary without being boring. It’s right next to an elevator, too, moving up and down the three floors. No biggie.
A TREEHOUSE!
IG/niceprintphoto
Treehouses make us immediately think of the “Drake, where’s the door hole?” scene from Drake & Josh, but anyway, this treehouse in Kathryn’s huge backyard is the pinnacle of wish-fulfillment—and we don’t just mean for kids. The treehouse is elegantly built, perfect for when one needs some peace, quiet, and a cozy place to relax.
THE GORGEOUS ART
IG/niceprintphoto
From the entrance door to under the staircase, paintings and artwork decorate Kathryn’s home. A mix of traditional art and contemporary sculpture, like a commissioned silvery abstract piece from artist Jinggoy Buensuceso, makes the areas of her house stylish and aesthetically-pleasing, perfect for the young artist.
As the summer season intensifies, the search for the next beauty buddy to brave those scorching sunbeams reaches critical levels. Who says you can’t have fun in the sun while staying flawless? With makeup products doubling as SPF and skin protectors, there’s no better time to explore practicality in beauty products.
With new releases hitting the market, we’re curious to see if they live up to their promises of providing both sun protection and flawless coverage. This time, we decided to don our sunscreen capes and give the BYS Tinted Sun Cushion a whirl, all in the name of science (and fabulousness, of course). After putting the product through its paces at the NYLON Manila Hot Tropic, here’s our review detailing whether the BYS Tinted Sun Cushion truly delivers on its claims.
Application and Packaging
The BYS Tinted Sun Cushion comes in sleek packaging, immediately setting the tone for practical beauty in your pocket. Its compact design is a godsend for the go-getters, ensuring we stay chic and protected no matter where the day takes us. Upon cracking it open, we were greeted by the cushion’s texture, promising a silky-smooth application.
In comparison to its cushion counterparts that tend to be matte and weighty, this product surprises with its moisture-rich formula And it doesn’t stop there. It leaves behind a refined, semi-glow finish that hugs the skin like a dream, granting a natural radiance and a blissful, cooling sensation—summer’s ultimate treat.
Calling for Coverage
When it came to coverage, the tinted cushion exceeded our wildest dreams. It flawlessly smoothed out our skin tone, effortlessly camouflaging those minor blemishes, all without weighing us down or feeling like a layer of cake. Its feather-light formula allowed our skin to breathe, making it a top contender for everyday wear, even under the sun.
With summer in full swing and everyone chasing those golden glows, we grabbed three shades (light, medium, and dark) that perfectly matched our skin tones.
Sun Protection and Skin TLC
One of the shining stars of the BYS Tinted Sun Cushion is its SPF protection, boasting a whopping SPF 50+ PA+++. It’s not just about sun defense; it’s buildable and breathable for easy, breezy application. Packed with skin-loving goodies like White Flower Complex, Triple Hyaluronic Acid Complex, and the anti-aging Niacinamide and Adenosine, it’s like a spa day in a compact.
We tested this product during extended periods under the sun, and it served remarkably well. But hey, even superheroes need backup, so don’t forget to layer on some sunscreen for that extra shield against UV rays.
Wearability and Longevity
Another aspect we put to the test was the endurance of the BYS Tinted Sun Cushion. Even in the scorching heat, this baby held its ground for hours, with no fading or melting in sight. Talk about staying power!
And let’s talk wearability. With its customizable coverage, we were able to adjust the intensity based on our preferences, making it versatile for various occasions. Whether you’re going for that effortless daytime glow or glamming it up for a soirée, this cushion has your back.
Pro tip: Blot throughout the day and resist the urge to overdo it with touch-ups—no one wants a cakey face before sundown, right?
Final Verdict: Does It Deliver?
After extensive testing in the summer heat, we can confidently say that the BYS Tinted Sun Cushion lives up to its promises. It provides reliable sun protection, impeccable coverage, and long-lasting wearability, making it a standout choice for anyone seeking a multifunctional beauty product for sunny days.
Whether you’re lounging at the beach or running errands under the sun, coming in at an affordable price of ₱999, it’s safe to say that it’s a must-have makeup product for this season.

Win Metawin and Janella Salvador are icons in their own right, and they recently came together in a joint slay as they starred opposite one another in romance-drama film Under Parallel Skies(2024). The movie is an international crossover production that brings the Filipino and Thai actors to the streets of Hong Kong to tell a story of love, differences, and change. Win portrays the spoiled, wealthy bachelor Parin across Janella’s charming and hardworking hotelier Iris. The two different individuals cross paths, and you can probably guess what happens next.
Outside the film, Win and Janella have shown that they’ve grown to be pretty close after working on it. “We worked smoothly,” Janella mentioned in an interview. From teaching each other bits and pieces of Thai and Filipino vernacular to openly laughing and joking around during their promo tour, the two stars have shared moments of a pure, fun, and sweet friendship that grew out of a project. Check out some of those moments below.
You know how, often, the first things Pinoys teach their new foreign acquaintances or friends are how to swear in Filipino? Or, similarly, how we teach them words that don’t have easy translations, like kilig? Under Parallel Skies has Win’s Parin learning “p********a mo” from Janella’s Iris, and things offscreen has never been the same since. The two co-stars have also taught each other more Thai and Filipino words during their time working together. Language barriers have nothing on true friendships.
Sometimes the best parts to watch about a blossoming relationship onscreen are the ones that aren’t scripted or were total accidents. For instance, Richard Gere snapping Julia Roberts’ hand in a jewelry box and her laugh in Pretty Woman (1990), or Noah Centineo’s pocket spin in To All The Boys I Loved Before (2018) that made it to the screen after he improvised it in rehearsal. In WinElla’s case, in a scene where Iris feeds Parin pork buns, she accidentally let him eat the paper wrapping as well. This little oopsie making it to the final cut is a show of some genuine fun between two colleagues-turned-supportive friends.
INBOX-ZONED
👩🏻: I did sth wrong to Win 😅 I have to apologize bcs I told him when we were shooting, "When you're in PH message me" then when he was in PH I forgot to reply 🤣 When I saw his msg he was alr gone 😭 I'm rly so bad at replying.#UnderParallelSkies#winmetawin#janellasalvadorpic.twitter.com/mLCgr7OVrL
Listen, we get it Janella. It really is so much easier to forget to reply to friends you already vibe with. “I have to apologize,” Janella admitted in an interview. Apparently, the actress and singer previously messaged Win that when he arrives in the Philippines, he should message her so she could take him around. And he did! But… Janella forgot to reply until the actor had already left. Bad replier representation. Thankfully, though, the two were able to spend some time together during their promo tour.
One thing both Janella and Win refuse to do: not slay—in everything they do. Their acting skills are well-known and well-loved, and they’ve got dedicated fanbases that support them. So, when they came together to work on Under Parallel Skies, it was bound to be an epic joint slay. But we’d love to highlight just how good WinElla looks together! All of their matching promo outfits, whether a simple, striking suit or a chic black-and-white dress, have been peak sophistication. A couple of well-dressed icons wherever they went.
CONSTANT SUPPORT
I am very happy that WinElla has the opportunity to work and become partners. Both always pay attention to each other and comfort each other 🥺💚
Working on a movie is hard work, for sure. From filming to the premiere, table reads to press tours, doing so much on the daily with your co-star could take a toll. Even the simple act of watching something you yourself worked hard on could be an emotional experience, so it’s nice to see that Win and Janella are generally supportive of each other, compliment each other, and offer comfort and camaraderie, whether its praising each other under Instagram posts or offering a comforting hand during their schedules. So sweet!
You can tell the two co-stars have built a sweet rapport together. Just watch them joke and mess around during their premieres and media conferences. You can see how comfortable they’ve grown around each other as they worked on Under Parallel Skies, bringing their chemistry both on-screen and off, and we’re all very much grateful for it. It can’t be easy taking on an ambitious, multicultural story, but they did it, they slayed it, and they’re having fun enjoying the fruit of their labor together.
There’s nothing like the power of food to bring people together, especially when it comes to watching content about food. From mukbangs to cooking videos and more, food content will always be a comfort for many. You probably know at least one person who can’t start their meal without watching a food video first, and we don’t blame them. It’s this style of content that Abi Marquez has found herself at the forefront of.
In just the past couple of years, the 23-year-old content creator has built herself a social media empire as one of the top food content creators in the Philippines whose reach touches all four corners of the world. So, what’s her secret ingredient to success? Well, it’s more than just a pinch of salt.
PREP TIME
Like with any good story, Abi’s starts with the fact that being a content creator was something she initially didn’t see herself becoming. While she’s always loved food and cooking since she was a kid, Abi also went through many sidequests. “Growing up, I did have these different hobbies. I used to dance in high school, I would join dance competitions, and then I did voice lessons I think for five to six years. And then I was also interested in filmmaking,” she shares with NYLON Manila.
While these endeavors seemed to have little in common with one another, it was these varied interests and skills she learned that laid the building blocks for her eventual career in content creation. “It was January 2022. I was in my last semester in college and online class. So I really had a lot of time, I guess, to do the things I love at home. And also, I was at home with all of this equipment.”
From her initial foray, Abi knew she struck gold as what she made at home entered the screens of millions around the world. “It began as a creative outlet during the pandemic for me, and it’s just something that I enjoy, without wanting anything in return.”
SHE’S COOKING
With the way social media works and trends changing in a snap of a finger, content creators need to be quick on their toes to stay on top of their game. Abi is well aware of this, which is why she approaches her work with precision. “I think like 90% of my videos are very intentional because, from the very beginning, I approach content creation logically or academically.”
This mindset bore from the fact that Abi began creating content during her academic years. During her last semester in college, where she graduated with a degree in Hospitality Restaurant Management, she proposed to her department that for her OJT, she would make content for her internship and put her learnings in actual academic case studies. Through her research, Abi dove head-first into the algorithm and the makings of a viral video, lessons that shaped how she approaches her own content.
“Even after [school], I find myself watching a lot of algorithm videos or videos of other creators giving tips on what has proven to be engaging for the past few years. And I also actively study viral videos right now and try to figure out what makes them engaging.”
Abi puts in the work, gets her head in the books, and keeps her ear close to the feedback of what her massive following is saying about her content. It’s this kind of thinking that has turned seemingly random ideas like stuffing peach mango pie into lumpia engaging viral hits to the tune of 31 million views on TikTok alone. It’s quick and snackable content, literally. But more than that, Abi makes it a point to always inject her content with her personality and humanity. It is through her personality, Abi feels, is where her content really clicks.
“I inject my personality in [my videos]. And that’s what makes my videos unique from others. I show that by recording my cooking videos nang tuloy-tuloy. I also record myself and kind of forget that I’m recording. So that way I could show my personality in the video, and I keep those unplanned or fun bits in the video.” She adds, “It takes a certain discipline to show that kind of authenticity and vulnerability or pagiging human in a video.”
And if you’re wondering, yes, she does eat and taste everything she cooks and shares them with her family, friends, neighbors, and staff. This also plays into Abi’s goal of giving the viewer what they want. “I require myself to do consumption shots because [the audience] can gauge how good the recipe was. On the other hand, it’s also a quality assurance thing for me kasi one fact about me is I don’t usually test recipes before I make the videos.”
Given Abi’s skills in the kitchen, most of what she makes is bussin’. But there will be a few stinkers here and there, and those, Abi admits, do not make the cutting room floor. “Those are the videos that I don’t publish. One of the most important things I try to protect when it comes to content creation is the trust of my audience. I will not release anything bad. I want to build that level of credibility and relationship with them.”
FROM ABI’S PLATE TO YOURS
With how big Abi’s audience has grown, the global reach does shape how she views her content. “I actually think about the whole demographics of my audience because creators need to know their audience when they create content, to know what catches their attention.” She takes the time to study her audience on her platforms and tailor her content to fit those who follow her, say more English content on her Instagram where the majority of her followers are outside the Philippines.
But just because Abi has a thorough understanding of who is watching her, she doesn’t box herself to appeal to a certain demographic. Instead, she uses her platform to her advantage as an opportunity to promote the best of Filipino cuisine. “The thing about having viewers that are international, it’s an honor and an opportunity to be able to share the local dishes we have in the Philippines globally and introduce our cuisine on that level. But I also try to balance it out with some familiarity.”
That comes in the form of introducing niche Filipino dishes that people outside the country may not be familiar with. She gives the example of suman and how she introduced the dish through the interesting hook of saying this is how Filipinos eat dessert with rice. Not only does that catch global viewers, but also makes Filipinos interested to see her take on the dish.
It’s not easy to finetune your content on that sweet spot, but as they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day. “You have to take some time off to just brainstorm recipes and also learn about the craft because social media is basically an algorithm.”
ATE AND LEFT NO CRUMBS
Abi may have started out making Filipino dishes, but her reach has undeniably gone global. Millions of followers across her social media accounts, over one billion cumulative views on TikTok, and her recent win at the 28th Webby Awards for People’s Voice in the Social – Food & Drink category are proof of this award-winning Gen Z creator’s influence. Her success isn’t just for personal gain though, but it’s also proof that Filipino cuisine has the potential to reach a global audience and start a discourse. It’s a point of pride for Abi that she gets to help in doing that.
“Seeing how Filipinos really support the recipes that I post just shows how proud Filipinos are of our cuisine. And at the same time, I love how the videos spark a discussion, or bring people together in the comment section and share about their anecdotes or relationship with that food. On the international level, seeing my Filipino recipes go viral just says that people are interested in Filipino food, and there’s an opportunity for Filipino food to shine at that level.”
As the tastes of Filipino dishes continue to get a larger audience, Abi looks to a bigger purpose and hopes that, through her videos, she can give proper exposure to local cuisine and even inspire others to make it themselves. After all, food is embedded into the DNA of Philippine culture and the bedrock of many beliefs and practices. “My mission is to fill these spaces with Filipino food. This generation is consuming a lot of media and feeling ko tama lang we supply or we fill these spaces with valuable educational content with Filipino recipes.”
And for the future content creators hoping to follow in her footsteps? Take it from Abi and don’t be afraid to start from where you are. As long as what makes you special is in your content, you’re on the right track.
“Start with whatever you have. It actually doesn’t matter that much as long as the story or the actual content is great. People are always gonna want shiny new things. So, if you’re a new creator, please do the world a favor and do something new. And don’t try to replicate other creators. I think the best way to stand out, especially in this niche, is with your personality. No one is you, you are the only you, and injecting your personality into a video automatically makes it unique.”
Whether you’re going out to the club across your university or attending a destination party, there are ways to enjoy a party that don’t involve any harm coming to yourself, others, or the environment. We know how rowdy parties can get, and how easy it is to forget your things, your friends, or even yourself when enjoying the vibes of the night. Your parents had a point! This summer, as more parties are being held in houses, clubs, and even beaches, it’s important to be responsible and make it out alive every time—well, you know what we mean.
Getting wild at the club or loud at the beach could be a precedent to some of the best memories, but you can’t sacrifice health and safety—yours or others’. So, fresh off our own shindig, we’ve rounded up some lessons, learnings, and advice from attendees of the NYLON Manila Hot Tropic summer party that you may appreciate keeping in mind during your next jamboree.
ON DRINKING AND KNOWING YOUR LIMITS
First things first—the age old adage of drink responsibly. From drag performer M1ss Jade So to creators Russco Jarviña and Joize, our guests emphasized the importance of knowing your limits when drinking and partying. Jade advises, “Partying responsibly is when you know how to control yourself and your limit. By doing this, you’ll be able to give courtesy to others, as well. Always remember that health comes first.”
Russco adds that it’s fine to refuse a drink. Don’t let the pressure get to you. “You don’t need to say yes to every drink, and when you feel like you’re nearing your limit, it’s okay to say no.” It’s also okay to be that responsible friend and cut someone off when you feel like they’ve had enough. Drinking isn’t necessary to have a good time, but if you do drink, know your limits and never let yourself get too carried away.
ON STAYING SAFE
Cardinal party rule: please, please, please stay safe. Unfortunately, there is plenty of potential harm at parties. From drunk accidents to unsavory individuals, make sure to have safeguards in place if you’re partying. Whether it’s carrying tools for your safety or letting other people know where you’ll be, practice having safety measures and being around people you trust. Safety trumps all, trust us.
For creator Iya Omaña, partying responsibly means having fun but also knowing her limits and being aware of her surroundings. “I also never leave my drink unattended,” she said. Always be aware of your surroundings and the people hanging around you, and help other people when needed. “Self control is key,” Mika of the NYLON Manila team adds. “Always think that you have loved ones waiting for you to come home.”
ON CARING FOR OTHERS
Part of staying safe also involves taking care of the people around you. Know when to make the right decisions that could be faced with some complaints, and know when to step up and be the responsible one during a night out. Iya continued, “[Responsible partying] is also about looking out for my friends or even reminding them to just drink what they can.” Help your friends get back to their beds safe and sound, have them drink water, call who needs to be called—just be a good friend and surround yourself with people who will do the same.
Beauty Writer Precy also thinks about her friends after a night out. “For me, partying responsibly means ensuring that you and your friends get home safely. And as a beauty girlie, it also means making sure you can at least remove your makeup before going to bed!” Going out with friends is a delicate balance of letting them have fun and let go but also ensuring each and every one of you have each other’s backs, whether its saving each other from a flirt with no sense of personal space or holding onto each other as you stumble back home.
ON CLEANING UP AFTER YOURSELVES
@nylonmanila We take partying seriously at NYLON Manila, but we’re all about partying responsibly. 🫶🏻 After an epic night, we went straight to clean-up duty, because living your best life doesn't mean leaving where you party a mess. 😌 #NYLONManilaHotTropic♬ original sound – user9168876084320
Hot Tropic was an overnight destination party that left room for guests to be responsible for their own casas and spaces. From guests to team, we put our dishes in the sink, deflated the inflatables, and threw away our trash. While there were staff that would clean after our stay, it’s still a show of accountability and respect for the space. Besides, it’s easy to clean what you can.
We don’t mean go bus tables at the club—we just mean try your best to be responsible for the environment in which you’re partying. We also can’t account for how sound of mind you are at each moment, but still. If you’ve got the chance to put all your napkins and glasses and plates in a corner, or clean up an area whether before you leave or the morning after, take it. You’ll make people’s lives easier. If you’re at the beach, for instance, don’t just throw your cups and trash down in the sand! It’s 2024. Clean up after yourselves.
ON MAKING THE MOST OF IT
Last but not least—don’t forget to make the most of it. We don’t mean get as rowdy and destructive as possible à la Azula, Zuko, Mai, and Ty Lee in The Beach episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender, but rather, let go and have fun. Whether you stay in a little bubble with your friends or strike a conversation with someone new, make the most of the fun and the connections you can make at a celebration. When the vibes are immaculate, it’s for sure going to be a core memory. Besides, you can even meet some new lifelong friends along the way.
ALAMAT’s Jao knows the magic of a shindig. “It is super fun to party and build genuine friendships when everything is at ease and festive at the same time,” he said. “Appreciate the energy of the everyone around you, and always remember to be yourself!”
