Despite how life has been like recently, we’re still in January. But if it’s any concession, we’re at the tail end of the month with February waving hi right around the corner. But with the end of the month also comes a rush of new tracks coming our way from both local and international artists. So, why not say goodbye to January by checking out what’s fresh on the music scene? Scroll down for some of our favorite tracks from the past week.

KASING KASING – JUAN KARLOS AND KYLE ECHARRI

Written in Bisaya, the soulful ballad tenderly touches and tugs at the heartstrings with its detailed narration of how a person feels after one gets heartbroken.

WALANG PAKE – BELLE MARIANO

Have you ever had those moments where you don’t care what other people think about your relationship? Then you’ll probably relate to this jazzy and smooth track of Belle’s And Somber album that’s all about radiating IDGAF energy when someone tries to judge their relationship.

HISS – MEGAN THEE STALLION

Megan is talking her sh!t, and we’re here for it. That “Megan’s Law” bar is enough to give the track its tens.

LOVE WINS ALL – IU

The only thing better than this somber romantic ballad is its accompanying music video that will have you feeling torn to the core.

SA KAHAPON – DILAW AND JANINE BERDIN

We don’t know why it took this long for Dilaw and Janine Berdin to hop on a track together, but we’re happy it’s real and they need to do it more often.

HULAAN – JANINE

There isn’t any guessing here in how the track tickles the ears in all the right places. Janine’s vocals are just *chef’s kiss*.

THINK U THE SHIT (FART) – ICE SPICE

With a beat engineered to not leave your brain and an opening line that would have Shakespear jealous, Ice Spice has another viral hit on her hands.

SLOW BURN – ILLEST MORENA

Like you, Illest Morena is also looking for that partner who has a bit of a good and bad side to them.

SSP (SAKSAK SA PUSO) – VXON

One thing about VXON, they aren’t afraid to play with different genres as seen in this cut from their debut album that hits all the right notes as a relatable track about betrayal, detailing anger and disappointment.

TEXT YOU FIRST – KIO PRIEST AND ANJI SALVACION

The age-old debate of making the first move takes center stage in this Y2K- inspired pop ditty from Kio and Anji.

WHAT KIND OF FUTURE – WOOZI

Woozi’s latest track is a touching and sentimental ode to the people we miss the most in life.

KAPIT – DWTA AND ALAMAT

They were cooking when they decided to put these two artists together in this rich blend of uplifting pop.

WIFE – G(I)-DLE

G(I)-DLE never beating the unserious allegations, and there’s nothing wrong with that! And bonus points for the lyrics on satirizing the expectations women face in society.

TORYANSE – ATARASHII GAKKO!

This beat and energy? Expect nothing less from ATARASHII GAKKO!

7 Facts About Art Fair PH 2024 That Will Get You Even More Hyped

line
It's going to be an artful weekend.

Nothing to do this February? Art Fair Philippines 2024 has got you covered.

Did someone say art?

Despite the world’s increasing turn to a digital future, traditional media such as art will always have a space in today’s society. It’s in art that we find some of today’s most innovative ideas as more conventional materials meet new avenues of expression. All that and more is set to take center stage at this year’s Art Fair Philippines, which is now in its 11th year.

The 2024 edition will see Filipino and international galleries, artists, curators, and educators come together for a whole weekend that celebrates art and everything it can be. Art Fair Philippines, the leading venue for exhibiting and selling Filipino modern and contemporary art, is set to present an expanded program that spotlights the Philippine visual arts – considered one of Southeast Asia’s most vibrant creative landscapes. With over 55 exhibitors present including the country’s top galleries and foreign galleries from Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, this year’s festivities will have something for everyone. Need more reasons to get excited? Check them out below.

A WORLDWIDE COLLECTION OF PROJECTS AND SPECIAL EXHIBITS

ART FAIR PH 2024

Art Fair PH’s Projects section is set to showcase a variety of local artists. Organized by production designer and theater director Ed Lacson, ArtFairPH/Projects will house works by renowned Filipino artists including Jonathan Ching, Jigger Cruz, Gean Brix Garcia, Rod Paras-Perez; a selection of women modernists, and a group of muralist painters mentored by Alfredo Esquillo Jr. and Renato Habulan.

ART FAIR PH 2024

One special exhibit to keep an eye out for is Pambabae, a collection aimed to give women artists their due. While the years 1969 to 1989 are remembered by local art aficionados as two decades of explosive creativity which was significant in the development of Philippine modern art, women artists in this period rarely got their time in the spotlight. This is why Pambabae aims to reappraise and highlight the contribution of Filipina women modernists who have largely been overshadowed by their male contemporaries. The women artists in this exhibition include Ivi Avellana Cosio, Ileana Lee, Nelfa Querubin, Evelyn Collantes, Phyllis Zaballero, and Lilian Hwang.

With an eye towards international as well, the Projects section also features Brooklyn-based multi-disciplinary artist Mr. StarCity; Romanian conceptual artist Andreea Medar; and a special interactive performance piece by Spanish artist Eugenio Ampudia titled Be A Tree Now, which will see participants be transformed into trees through digital means as a commentary on the climate crisis.

UP-AND-COMING ARTISTS TAKE CENTER STAGE

ART FAIR PH 2024

Art Fair Philippines isn’t just a place for established artists. It also is a hub for new creatives to have their works seen on a bigger stage. Art Fair PH’s residency program does just that with how artists are given opportunities to deepen their practice and develop networks beyond their usual context.

This year’s artists are Mark Salvatus for Manila Observatory in Quezon City, Manila; Anna Miguel Cervantes for Linangan Art Residency in Alfonso, Cavite; Jett Ilagan for Emerging Islands in San Juan, La Union; Julian Tapales for Butanding Barrio in Puerto Princesa, Palawan; and Renz Baluyot for Orange Projects in Bacolod, Negros Occidental as well as two international artists who have joined the residency program in Orange Project this 2024 – Iseult Perrault and Petr Hajdyla. Their experiences will be translated into visual reports consisting of illustrations, photographs, videos, performances, and objects.

RESOURCES TO BRUSH UP ON YOUR ART KNOWLEDGE

ART FAIR PH 2024

In Art Fair Philippines, you don’t just get to see art, you also get to learn about it through informative and engaging talks. For the 2024 edition, the organization once again partners with the Ateneo Art Gallery to present a series of talks that aims to provide insight into an artist’s work and life, art forms, artistic processes, collectors, and interests.

Among the topics to be discussed this year include the intersections of art and science, photography as authorship, women in modern art, and reading images from a historical perspective, among others. With a special participation from the Lopez Museum, there will also be a demonstration on basic stretching, matting, and framing of canvas, and a discussion on the basics of artwork conservation.

YOU GET TO TALK ABOUT MOVIES WHILE ENJOYING A BEER (OR TWO)

ART FAIR PH 2024

Have you ever imagined what it is like to go to a bar where all you talk about is movies? If you go to Art Fair PH 2024, you won’t have to with their Film presentation, NO SHOWING. Curated by filmmaker Moira Lang, Art Fair PH’s section on the art of film isn’t movie screenings or a film festival, but an actual hangout/speakeasy/watering hole/listening party/dance floor/breathing space for filmmakers and filmgoers to weigh, diagnose, and compare notes and remedies on the state of movie making and moviegoing in the Philippines.

Think of it as those movie discussions you have with your friends, but this time with experts from the industry as music selected by filmmakers is played just loud enough to talk and to listen to one another.

Also, don’t miss out on the Photography section as this year’s sole exhibitor is FotomotoPH, a Manila-based organization of visionary photographers, curators, and writers dedicated to promoting Philippine photography through an annual cycle of exhibitions, public programs, and special projects with art spaces throughout the archipelago.

GOING DIGITAL

ART FAIR PH 2024

Since its introduction last year, Art Fair PH’s Digital section has highlighted the new ways art can be manifested. Digital media is the new frontier for artists as this year will see David Gryn, founder of Daata, present Best Dressed Chicken (Manila Version), a selection of digital video artworks that engage with notions of vanity and choice. For the Crypto fans out there, you may also want to check out the special exhibit in collaboration with CryptoArt PH, which focuses on showcasing the incredible talent and innovation of Filipino artists in the realm of NFTs and blockchain technology.

NOT JUST LIMITED TO ONE SPACE

ART FAIR PH 2024

If you thought Art Fair PH was just limited to a single building over one weekend, think again. The festivities take over the Metro way longer than that. Complementing the fair is the 10 Days of Art initiative highlighting a series of events around the Makati Central Business District with participation by galleries, museums, and other establishments.

The public art component will feature in two locations. The first is the Tower One Fountaine area along Ayala Avenue. Trans-disciplinary visual artist Derek Tumala presents A Warm Orange-Colored Liquid, his biggest and most ambitious work to date. For the second, motion graphics artist and multimedia engineer Isaiah Cacnio will take over the Green Wall of Ayala Triangle Garden Tower for Prismatic Embrace, a digital projection featuring a vibrant symphony of colors and dancing layers of hues.

And, to kick off 10 Days of Art, Art Fair Philippines will be having the Gallery Weekend from February 9 to 11, where visitors are encouraged to see the gallery exhibitions at their respective locations throughout the weekend. Pub crawl? No, we’re going on an exhibit crawl. You can check out the full list of details here

FROM PARKING LOT TO ART GALLERY

ART FAIR PH 2024

So, where will Art Fair Philippines 2024 take place? Not a convention hall or showroom, but a parking lot, of course. True to art’s transformational powers,The Link, a car park in Makati City, is set to be transformed by Art Fair Philippines into a multi-level exhibition hub for Filipino modern and contemporary art that will host the fair from February 16-18.

Art Fair Philippines 2024 will be held at The Link, Makati City, on February 16 to 18 from 10 AM to 9 PM. Meet Alexie Mae Caimoso Brooks, the 22-year old beauty, brains, and brawn crowned as Miss Iloilo 2024.

ICYMI, we are slowly entering a new pageant season in the country. And while it still is early days, there are already queens who are giving us major potential. Step into the scene because there’s a new titleholder making waves in Iloilo. On January 13, the crown found its way to the head of the fabulous 22-year-old Filipino-American, Alexie Mae Brooks, as she snagged the title of Miss Iloilo 2024 at the West Visayas State University Cultural Center.

But wait, we’re not just here for her beauty, brains, and brawn— it’s her inspiring backstory that has secured a spot in headlines and in the hearts of many. If you’re imagining photoshoots, dress rehearsals, and beauty rests as part of her preparation, think again. Scroll through these fast facts that prove the reigning Miss Iloilo is worth stanning.

Abanse Babae!

Alexie Brooks is rewriting the history books, snagging the title of Miss Iloilo 2024 and setting the stage ablaze for an unforgettable journey to Miss Universe. With her historic win, she’s not just representing the City of Love in the national pageant; she’s out there, flaunting the genuine beauty of an Ilongga and embodying the essence of a modern Filipina.

“I want women to move forward. Abanse babae! This is something that comes from my heart. I want to empower women. I want to educate and advocate for women from the past and right now. Women could be so much more. We are capable of so much more,” passionately declared Alexie in response to the final interview.

Holding the coveted crown, as the first of many, goes beyond personal growth and achievement. It’s a symbolic breakthrough, not just for Ilonggas but for all Filipinas worldwide, signaling a future where empowerment and limitless potential take the spotlight.

An Androgynous Beauty

Alexie’s allure transcends conventional beauty norms, as she effortlessly embodies an androgynous charm that blends both masculine and feminine features. A scroll through her Instagram feed reveals an array of styles – from streetwear to runway-ready looks – all served and pulled off by Miss Iloilo 2024.

Speaking of looks, online chatter is buzzing with comparisons as some fans claim that the Ilongga beauty shares a striking resemblance with none other than Zozibini Tunzi, the iconic Miss Universe of 2019.

Advocating for Self-Love

Growing up as a black woman in Iloilo, Alexie spilled the truth about facing racial bullying. In an Instagram post, she opened up about the shade thrown at her natural curly hair – apparently, it got compared to a bird’s nest. The constant criticism took a toll on her confidence, making the dream feel so far-removed from her reality.

But today, Alexie had an epiphany – her unique features are her power, not something to be embarrassed about. Now, she’s gracing billboards, making waves as an inspirational athlete, and strutting her stuff as a model-turned-title holder, gunning for Miss Universe 2024. And that’s not all – she’s on a mission to spread the love.

“So what I want women to know is that they should be proud of what they have and who they are regardless of their appearance and differences in life. For me, it’s always about giving other people the power of influence. Making them feel beautiful, confident, and empowered,” she shared in an interview with ABS-CBN.

She’s A Runner, She’s A Heptathlete

Alexie is a track and field sensation from the Philippines who’s literally running the game. Like, seriously, this girl is a powerhouse. She’s not just burning tracks across the country; she’s making waves on the global scene.

In 2022, she snagged the title of MVP in the UAAP, representing National University like a boss. And guess what? She didn’t stop there. The same year, she rocked the Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam, proving she’s not just a runner; she’s a heptathlete.

Her academic achievements are no less impressive—girl scored scholarships at both the University of Southern California and the University of Texas right after acing Iloilo National High School. But with that, her dream has always been to take the pageant route.

Laking Lola

At the heart of Alexie’s soaring popularity lies a deeply touching narrative that has resonated with Filipinos far and wide. One of the reasons behind her trending status is the series of photos capturing the wholesome moments Miss Iloilo 2024 shared with her grandmother during the coronation night. FYI, she’s a certified laking lola, and it’s low-key the cutest thing.

Born to a Filipina mother working as an overseas worker in Lebanon, the titleholder found an anchor in the unconditional love of her Lola Basing. In a beautiful tribute, Alexie honored her grandmother as she claimed the coveted crown, underscoring the significance of family bonds in shaping the woman she has become today.

‘Grateful beyond words for the support of my incredible team, mentors, sponsors, and the unwavering love from friends, family, and the people of Leon, Iloilo,‘ Alexie said on Instagram.

To Many More…

Alexie’s win as Miss Iloilo 2024 is truly iconic, and we can all agree that Rabiya Mateo must be proud to see another Ilongga setting the stage for an exciting era in the pageant scene. In addition to securing several awards, including Best Cultural Costume, Best in Designers’ Fashion Show, Best Swimsuit, and recognition from sponsors, this Leon, Iloilo native also holds the distinction of being the first black and androgynous beauty to represent the province.

While this is her first coveted crown, Alexie is gearing up for the country’s biggest local pageant, Miss Universe Philippines 2024. Get ready for the ultimate glow-up because Michelle Dee is about to pass on the torch, and we’re here wishing Alexie all the best for that takeover.

One message rings clear with her third mini-album, GOOD MORNING: let go of the past, cling to optimism, and embrace every morning with a smile on your face, at least for today. “Erase the traces of tears from last night / Good morning, at least for today / No need to be afraid / It’s another day,” she sings on the bridge of GOOD MORNING. Describing the album as where she lays bare her autobiographical stories, YENA’s unadorned self and thoughts shown in the tracks including Good Girls in the Dark, Damn U, and The Ugly Duckling, coupled with her enthralling vocals are sure to bring comfort to the listeners.

“It really means a lot to me when so many people tell me that they’ve found empathy and comfort in my music,” she expresses. Following the release of her new mini-album, YENA opens up with NYLON Manila to delve into her journey from navigating the transition after three years in a group to actively shaping her sound as a solo artist. . Read the full exclusive interview below.

Since 2024 has just arrived, are there things that you’d like to try this year as well as goals you’re planning to achieve this year?

I would love to travel to different countries I haven’t been to yet and hold a concert so I can meet all Jigumi (YENA’s fandom name).

Your music has this bubbly, feel-good vibe that’s so addictive. Do you feel you’ve further refined your signature style with each release? Is there a point where you think someone could instantly recognize a YENA song just by the sound, that they will be like, “Oh, this has gotta be a YENA song!”?

It really means a lot to me when so many people tell me that they’ve found empathy and comfort in my music, and I hope to continue to spread my positive, uplifting energy.

Speaking of genres, do you plan to expand to other genres in the future, or do you feel happy painting within your signature “colorful” style?

There are so many genres that I haven’t tried out yet, and so many things that I want to do that I plan to slowly unravel one by one. At the same time, I want to create something that is uniquely my own, naturally incorporating my own charm and feelings that I can show.

YENA

INSTAGRAM/YENA.JIGUMINA

Your albums tell a lot about you: SMiLEY fits your personality; you said that your most cherished possession is your smartphone, and that’s why you have an album titled SMARTPHONE. Could you tell us more about GOOD MORNING? Do you think your new album also plays a part in your personality?

I also tried to include a lot of my own autobiographical stories in this GOOD MORNING album. When I face various situations in life, I tend to solve them well with my own positive energy. I hope to convey empathy and comfort to many people who are struggling for their own reasons with this album.

There’s more of your genuine inner self on the album. What message do you hope resonates with listeners?

As the title song “Good Morning” says, “Yesterday’s worries and troubles ended yesterday! Tomorrow, the sun will rise again, and it will definitely be a good morning!” I hope you can relate to that part.

YENA

INSTAGRAM/YENA.JIGUMINA

Since the album title is GOOD MORNING, I was wondering if you are a morning person? What’s usually the first thing you do when you wake up?

Actually, I’m not a morning person at all, and I don’t set the alarm very often. (laughs) I’m a person who loves being in bed. I spend as much time lying in bed as possible. I feel like I just wake up, use my phone, play games, and then just stay in bed until I come to my senses.

Speaking of your bubbly personality, I heard that you’re an extrovert. Is there anything new that you’ve discovered about yourself over the past years?

I think I’m a little bit stronger than I thought I was, and I think my positive attitude is the best thing I have, probably my biggest strength.

You mentioned that one of the cons of being a solo artist is that living alone is boring when before you used to live with 12 members, especially when you’re outgoing. How do you manage or cope with that now?

I still live with my brother because I don’t like to be alone. I don’t spend as much time alone as I thought I would. I’m always so happy all the time.

YENA

INSTAGRAM/YENA.JIGUMINA

You took part in writing two songs: GOOD MORNING and The Ugly Duckling. What is the best way to sum up a day spent writing and creating music in a studio? Could you explain your creative process to us, and what was it like working with other music producers for this album?

There are many times when I think, “I’m so grateful to have so many good people around me, and I’m so lucky to have a good life,” and I really felt this a lot while working on my album this time. I feel so grateful to have someone listen to my story, empathize with me, and tell my own story through music.

What was your inspiration behind writing these tracks? I’m especially interested in hearing your thoughts on The Ugly Duckling. You were IZ*ONE’s self-proclaimed “duck” back then. Is that somehow connected? Tell us the backstory.

In fact, yes, my nickname is Duck, and I was so moved by the story of The Ugly Duckling fairy tale that I wanted to create a song that resonated with many people on this topic. I think it is more meaningful because it is a song that contains a message and encouragement that I want to convey to people my age or those who are first stepping into the society.

You enjoy making choreographies as much as writing lyrics. I heard you participated in making the choreography for “SMARTPHONE.” How about this time around for “GOOD MORNING”? How long did it take you to master the dance choreography?

Since this song doesn’t have a lot of choreography [of my own] compared to previous songs, I learned it in one day and it took about three days to master it.

YENA

INSTAGRAM/YENA.JIGUMINA

It’s been 2 years since your solo debut. Looking back, how do you think your solo journey shaped you?

As I became more interested in myself, I learned about myself, what my charms are, and what makes me happy. It was a very interesting and enjoyable process and journey as I discovered new aspects of myself that I didn’t even know existed.

What do you think was the hardest part of transitioning from being in a group to being a solo artist? What were the hardest adjustments you had to make? Now, two years in, are you starting to feel more confident about CHOI YENA as a solo artist?

I had a lot of worries about whether I could fill the stage by myself and whether I could handle the responsibility, but I think the more I did it, the more fun it was and the quicker I got used to it. Every time I worked on a new album, there were a lot of really fun and interesting moments as I was able to see and show a new side of myself. There are still so many things I haven’t done and so many things I want to do, so I’m really looking forward to the future and I want to keep working as hard as I am now, so please look forward to my future.

Finally, do you have any messages to your fans in the Philippines?

Thank you for sending so much interest and love even from afar, and I will try my best to repay the love you gave me in person! I love you!

Inside The Apl.de.Ap Foundation And Bitto’s ‘Phygital’ Collaboration That’s Set To Take Over Crypto

line
Prepare to see a lot more of phygital art.

Breaking new ground and all for a good cause, the Apl.de.Ap Foundation, Bitto, and GCash are bringing art to a whole new forefront.

For centuries, art has always been at the forefront of change and innovation. With every start of a new age for humanity, the arts have always been the leader in breaking new ground and leading the way for what’s next. In today’s increasingly digitized world, art has been a key field in shaping the way we view things, and this collaboration between GCash, Apl.de.Ap Foundation, and Bitto is proof of that.

As NFTs, NFCs, and more aspects of the crypto and digital world find themselves even more embedded into the art space, GCash, Apl.de.Ap Foundation, and Bitto are showing what a ‘phygital’ art scene looks like by combining the physical medium of art with the digital space in their Agents of Peace and Love collection.

APL.DE.AP FOUNDATION X BITTO

On the surface, the founder of AplFi and Grammy-award-winning member of The Black Eyed Peas Apl.de.Ap and visual artist Bitto are two creatives who operate in different realms. But it’s what they bring to the table that made this partnership work, with GCash, and specifically GCrypto, serving as the platform to make it happen. The collaboration began a little less than a year ago when Apl, who is no stranger to the NFT and blockchain space, began talks with GCash on a possible art collection infused with blockchain technology.

“I’ve always wanted to do something in a Web3 space and promote Filipino artists, especially in the creative industry and I thought blockchain is a good space for artists especially in the Philippines,“ says Apl. “I’m very excited about the collaboration with Bitto and GCrypto to keep promoting Philippine art from digital to music. I’m excited about this one as I’ve been thinking about combining my music with digital art.”

GCRYPTO

For GCash, the collaboration was a no-brainer given that the financial app has a key pillar of bringing NFTs and cryptocurrency closer to Filipinos. “One of the ways to do that is through art,” shares Luis Buenaventura, head of Web3at GCash. “We’re bringing Filipino talent, to Filipino customers, and Filipino art collectors, using NFTs and other technologies.”

GCRYPTO

Soon, Bitto, an artist and muralist based in Manila whose abstract and attention-grabbing work you’ve probably seen around the Metro, came on board to bring this collab to life. Through Zoom calls and other meetings, the partnership became a ‘Phygital’ art collection titled Agents of Peace and Love (whose initials spell APL) which, as the name suggests, had the goal of promoting peace and love.

You’ve probably seen some of BITTO’s work before, such as this piece he did for a global brand in BGC.

Taken from Instagram/STUDIO_BITTO

GCRYPTO

To that end, a portion of the sales of the collection went to the Apl.de.Ap foundation which focuses on supporting youth to grant opportunities through arts, technology, and healthcare in the Philippines. Combining art, music, and cryptocurrency in unprecedented ways, the collection stood out for, among other things, having unreleased music from Apl being embedded into the actual pieces.

GCRYPTO

True to the collaboration’s main goal, the music Apl made serves as a “siren to call out like-minded people who want to promote peace and love – and that’s what we need most in the world right now”

ENTER THE PHYGITAL WORLD

So, you may be wondering, what is ‘Phygital’ art? Well, it refers to artworks that combine both the physical and digital realms. Elements from both are pieced together in new ways as artists create pieces blending traditional artistic techniques with digital technology. It’s yet another form of how art innovates with the times and how the medium has no boundaries.

GCRYPTO
GCRYPTO

Self-expression takes center stage with how collectors get to consume art in new ways. “There is always going to be that physical aspect of the art. We’ve just kind of added these other layers to make it richer,” shares Luis.

Old school meets new school with how collectors have both the physical artwork and the collection on the blockchain. “If you’ve ever bought an expensive painting, typically these have pieces of paper that say, this is the authentic work of this artist and it’s all signed by the artist,” Luis notes. “It’s kind of something that has been upgraded by blockchain because now you can put that information on a universal database.” To illustrate that point, Luis shared how the certificate of authenticity, which is normally given as a piece of physical paper to the buyer, is now stored in the blockchain.

AGENTS OF PEACE AND LOVE

With Apl focusing on music and Bitto leading the way in terms of visuals, this partnership proved to be fruitful, literally and figuratively. The Apl.de.Ap Foundation has continuously been supportive of the local creative scene, while Bitto is one of the country’s top visual artists, so magic was bound to happen.

GCRYPTO

As Apl explains, “It came out very organic. We had the same goal in promoting Filipino art along with music and this is a great two mediums to put together to support the youth.”

This combination of physical art and NFTs had endless possibilities as both artists frequently ping-ponged ideas between each other, with Bitto at one point pitching the idea to make a music video with NFTs scattered throughout the video. Agents of Peace and Love eventually manifested differently but still eye-catching with a mix of vibrant colors.

GCRYPTO

The most recognizable detail from the whole collection is arguably the image of Apl sitting on top of an actual apple. According to Bitto, he aimed to include something that would have heads turning and easy to recall, “I wanted to come up with something iconic or obvious.”

Apl on an apple began as a joke, but it proved to be popular with the team. “Parang nakakatuwa siyang isipin but they liked it.” The symbol also served as a homage to Isaac Newton and how he formulated gravitational theory after watching an apple fall from a tree. “I wanted Apl sitting on the apple so medyo layers siya na discovery of exploration and invention at the same time.”

GCRYPTO

Agents of Peace and Love is composed of three main parts. First, the biggest, is a 4×5 ft Canvas painting with embedded original music by Apl, which served as a particular favorite for the musician. “It has a great message to keep promoting peace and love all over the world. Bitto did a great illustration,” Apl shares.

The artwork was auctioned off during the launch of the collection at Poblacion last January 18, with it eventually going to Jax Reyes, who bought it for a price that went above a whopping 300,000 pesos. Aside from the artwork, Jax also got to keep the original song and the opportunity to have dinner with Apl and Bitto.

GCRYPTO

Second, there are the Apl x Bitto 12-inch sculptures with embedded music available in eight unique colorways. “The sculptures are a nice technical innovation kasi naka-embed pa yung blockchain record inside the sculptures,” marvels Luis. Both the canvas painting and the sculptures had NFTs serving as the certificate of authenticity. The final are silkscreen prints that came in two designs, with each edition having 15 prints.

NEW FRONTIER FOR ART

As technology continues to advance, so too does art evolve to meet the moment. While the idea of ‘phygital’ art might seem foreign to many, it’s a showcase of how physical and digital can go together to make something new and exciting as well as what the future holds. “A lot of modern art is testing new things, seeing where the boundaries are,” shares Luis. “What we have here is just the beginning of this experiment.”

GCRYPTO

This collection is a start not only for how crypto is going to move into new fronts but also to open people’s minds to what they can expect from art. As Bitto sees it, the opportunity for flexibility and to play around with formerly rigid structures is real. “You can see it anywhere, the possibilities of art to bridge different fields… It’s a catalyst for more opportunities and possibilities,” Bitto shares.

More importantly, it opens the doors for young Filipino creatives to have their talent be seen in new ways by a wider audience and for the industry to grow even more. The Apl.de.Ap Foundation has been a pioneer in championing young artists and making their voices and talents be seen and heard with the proper resources and platforms. This collaboration is their latest step in doing so. “This collection is just an introduction to what it could become. This is just a stepping stone for all the artists in the Philippines to have an outlet,” Apl proudly states.

And, as they tease, this is just an exciting start. Get excited as GCash brings more of these collaborations to the forefront as the frontier of physical and digital continues to meld. “Over the next several months, we’re gonna have several of these launches where we’re going to be bringing Filipino talent to Filipino customers using NFTs and other technologies,” reveals Luis.

If you want to step into this space and try your hand at phygital art and cryptocurrency, GCrypto, which made this collaboration possible, has got you covered. All you have to do is press the GCrypto button inside the GCash app to get started and open yourself to a world of possibilities.

With Their First Album ‘20:20,’ VXON Sets Their Sights On The Future

With Their First Album ‘20:20,’ VXON Aims For The Future

line
New year, new album, new VXON.

P-pop boy group VXON shares everything that went into the release of their first album ’20:20′, and what it means to have a clear vision for the future.

Related: VXON 2.0: How The P-pop Boy Group Is Going Bigger And Bolder This 2023

Two years into their career, P-pop boy group VXON is finally releasing their first album—and it’s nothing short of an electric reintroduction to “The Monsters of P-pop.”

VXON, composed of members C13, Franz, Sam, Vince, and Patrick, debuted back in 2022 under Cornerstone Entertainment. With only 11 singles since then, they’ve earned themselves a place in the roster of P-pop groups changing the local and global music scene. From experimenting with their sound and style to offering as much heart in their craft as any artist does, the boy group’s career beginnings saw them step, stumble, and stand up again countless times in an effort to turn their vision into reality.

The group dropped 20:20 on January 26th, featuring lead tracks SSP (Saksak sa Puso) and Kalaw, and we got the chance to hear straight from the members about what it’s like to work on their first album and the new direction they’re taking as a group more in tune to who they are as artists.

20:20 VISION

First things first—why “20:20“? The band asserts that 20:20 isn’t about having perfect vision, it was about having a clear vision—and there’s a difference! One of the main themes of the album is vulnerability, and having clear vision means you get to see everything out in the open, flaws and all. Franz expounds, “The imperfections make life beautiful. So, lahat ng flaws, lahat ng pinagdaanan na pain, I feel like that’s what makes us stronger as people and makes us better as individuals.”

To showcase their artistry as individuals after having released a handful of group singles over the past two years, four out of the nine tracks in 20:20 are solo releases that feature other artists like MC Einstein with Sam, G22’s AJ with C13, Zephanie with Franz, and a duet between Vince as Vince Enzo and Patrick.

vxon 20:20 new album p-pop tracklist

On working with their collaborators, the members gushed about the unique synergy that they found in their unique connections with each artist. Sam felt like his dreams came true as he worked with one of his inspirations MC Einstein. C13 shares that collaborating with AJ from G22 for O Kay Sarap coaxed him out of his comfort zone and they bonded over their positions as rappers and leaders in their respective groups. Franz, who’s been collaborating with singer Zephanie for a while now, called it an “honor” to work with one of his best friends in the industry on Miss Na Kita.

As for Vince and Patrick’s duo collab, Vince says of Patrick, “Kilala ko na siya. Alam ko kasi yung kaya niyang gawin.” Vince was initially apprehensive of doing the song alone, so he enlisted Patrick’s help in completing Coco. Patrick adds, “Thankful ako kasi sinama niya ako, ako yung napili niya, and naniwala siya sakin kahit nung una, di ako naniwala sa sarili ko.”

Even though they mostly worked on their tracks solo, VXON collectively learned plenty from their album preparation, and even shared, laughing all the while, that they supported each other all throughout the process. The quintet’s nervous energy emanates as they did final preparations—like a presscon—for the biggest endeavor of their career yet, but their bond tethers them to each other, allowing them to tell their own stories and continue the epic tale of VXON through pulsating beats, youthful and edgy melodies, and honest lyrics.

CLEAR EYES, STEADY HANDS

“Ever since nung nag-debut kami,” group leader C13 shares with NYLON Manila, “We’ve been really hands-on when it comes to our craft.” And there’s no denying that, as Franz has been VXON’s lead composer, songwriter, and producer since their debut, and all of the members had a hand in producing the album. But there was a lot to learn, and a lot of highs and lows that come with the dream. But they hustled, they adapted, and they grew.

“We [didn’t] really have that much experience pa when it comes to songwriting and stuff. Along the way…we’ve grown so much. And ang daming taong tumulong samin, ang dami naming natutunan sa journey namin.”

The members agree that the VXON back during their debut is a different VXON from the one we see now. In terms of experience, they’ve now gathered more feelings and stories that they want to share—through a full album, no less—and in terms of music style, they’ve finally discovered where they feel comfortable.

“Before, we always expressed self-confidence, being yourself,” Franz explains. “And ngayon, we’re tackling more mature subjects in this album. Yung life experience, yung heartbreaks, pain, betrayal, and the like.” From the action movie soundtrack-worthy SSP (Saksak sa Puso) to the heartfelt Miss Na Kita, VXON tackles a pretty broad range of subjects and themes in their album, but there’s a certain uniformity to 20:20 that ties together each of the members’ artistry and style.

HONING THE VISION—AT THEIR OWN PACE

vxon 20:20 new album

It’s long been known that VXON values reflection, authenticity, mindfulness, and communication among themselves as a group and with their management team. Their sound may often be intense and hard-hitting, but their process is a lot kinder. They bear all the pressure with grace, Franz explains, and things go by pretty smoothly.

“At our own pace, we work gradually,” he says. “Kung saan kami mas nasa-satisfy and kung saan namin mas mae-express yung sarili namin.” It’s a refreshing outlook given the perception that the industry is always high-stakes and fast-paced—to the detriment of artists’ health. VXON proves that it’s alright to take your time, hone your craft, and navigate life at less of a breakneck speed.

vxon 20:20 new album

“Goal din namin is to keep falling in love with the outcomes ng mga ginagawa namin,” Sam remarks. A refreshing sentiment stated out loud, because in this world where everything from music to content just keeps dropping by the thousands every day, it’s rare to truly hear from people that they hope what they make is the best it could possibly be. There’s no “okay na ‘to” for VXON. They’ll truly give everything they have.

Upon hearing some of the final mixes of their song, Sam adds that they felt a sense of accomplishment at what they were able to do. He also echoes that which an artist always desires: “We hope na, kung ano yung naramdaman namin, maramdaman din ng listeners.” They envision a year ahead with more people who fall in love with their music, more Vixies (their fans), more music, and more accomplishments to add as notches on their belt.

NEW BEGINNINGS

vxon 20:20 new album COVER p-pop

This album is the culmination of a long journey for VXON—one that involves a lot of self-discovery and introspection that the group is now known for. In 20:20, they lay bare their pains, their joys, their regrets, and their artistry. VXON’s training, their past, their mistakes—they’ve got a deep well of experiences and knowledge that they use to move forward.

“That’s what’s important naman, e,” Vince says. “Na ina-accept mo yung mga mali mo sa life.”

VXON remains thankful for all the support they’ve received, and with this album, they mark a new beginning in their journey to express who they are through their music and promise bigger and better things to come. 20:20 was just a vision to C13, Franz, Sam, Vince, and Patrick, and now that it’s out, they’re giving the world a chance to see and hear them for who they are—to share with them a connection uniquely forged by music.

“Binuhos talaga namin yung buong puso and pagkatao namin sa album na ‘to,” C13 says in a message to Vixies. “As always, sobrang thankful namin na andiyan kayo, and alam din namin na sobrang inabangan niyo ‘tong album, so finally, mabibigay namin sa inyo.”

“We shed our blood, sweat, and tears for this project,” Franz adds. “And we’re very proud of it.”

With Drag Den 2 On Her Sights, Manila Luzon Is Going Bolder And Braver

line
Let the dragdagulan begin.

When it comes time to find new ways to excite the audience, count on Manila Luzon to understand the brief.

Related: Drag Den Is The Filipino Drag Reality Show Worth Supporting

When Drag Den Season 1 first premiered on Prime Video in early 2023, it was proof of the continued rise of Philippine drag in mainstream discourse and also stood out for how special it was. There were few, if any, quite like Drag Den on TV with its tongue-in-cheek take on a drag reality competition show that put the story of the queens front and center while also spotlighting important social issues.

Leading the way is Manila Luzon, RuPaul’s Drag Race royalty, who hosts the show as its Drag Lord. A year later, the show is back for season two following a positively received debut. And as Manila sees it, the search for the next Drag Supreme is going to be anything but boring.

A WILD RIDE

Even though drag has been on the rise, especially in mainstream media, over the past few years, it wasn’t a guarantee that Drag Den was going to do well. But it did with its perch on one of the biggest streaming services in the world as fans tuned in eagerly every week. It’s a fact that Manila is grateful for.

MANILA LUZON

“I’m just so proud that I’ve been able to work on Drag Den,” says Manila, who took home Best Entertainment Host award at the Asian Academy Creative Awards (AACA) in Singapore last December for her work on the show. “I’m so happy for it being on Prime Video, it’s able to be seen around the world, which, you know, was one of my goals after I saw my very first drag show live here in the Philippines.”

Many people, Manila included, consider Philippine drag as some of the best and most exciting in the world. So, seeing Drag Den make waves is a step in the right direction for the local drag scene. “Hosting Drag Den has really provided this opportunity for me to showcase the Filipino talent here in the drag community. And it became a dream come true because I really wanted to shine a spotlight on Filipino drag artistry, and the show has provided that dream.”

FOR FILIPINO DRAG

If you’ve seen Drag Den, then you know how unapologetically Pinoy it is. It’s a competition show for Filipinos, by Filipinos. Series creator Rod Singh and her team envisioned a drag competition show where nearly every inch of the den is covered in queer Pinoy energy. The best part is that the show made an emphasis to highlight how diverse the Philippine drag scene is. Drag Den 2 continues to carry that energy as 10 new queens compete for the win in another den after the last one was raided.

Taking on a psychedelic vibe set in Tondo, Manila 30 or so years in the future, season 2, which carries the title Retribution, is giving viewers even more slices of local drag that go beyond location and gender. “I was really interested in showing off more kinds of drag, more range.” The show’s producers made an effort to widen the scope for the cast, which is why this season’s queens aren’t just from the Metro, but from all over the Philippines. Retribution also makes history as having the first AFAB (assigned female at birth) queen compete on the show in makeup artist Marlyn Ocampo (Fun fact: she was Manila’s makeup artist in season one).

MANILA LUZON

“A lot of people think that for drag, you have to be a man playing dress up as a woman, but it’s way more than that. It’s way more inclusive. Drag artists can be biological women, straight men, or transgender. So I’m really excited that we can show off more kinds of drag in the new season,” expresses the Filipino-American queen.

But with all these new rules, inclusions, and additions, was there a pressure to top the first season? “Of course, of course,” says Manila without hesitation. “Every time I get in drag, I always try to improve on what I did last time. I definitely put a lot of pressure on myself because, you know, I’m so well-received as a host.”

Acknowledging the fact that she does have her flaws, such as still not knowing how to speak fluent Tagalog, Manila makes an effort to better herself as the show’s host. “The pressure is on, but that’s fine. I really want our show to do really well and for the audience to really love it. So we made sure that we were keeping on top of ourselves.”

TAKE ME HIGH

No show, especially one as vibrant as Drag Den, is complete without a proper theme song. And for season 2, that comes in the form of Manila’s new song POM POM (Take Me High). In line with Retribution’s more psychedelic theme, the song plays on the idea of partying and having a grand time as your consciousness takes on new forms.

“Recording POM POM was a lot of fun because it really has a lot of trippy aspects to it.” The highlight for Manila though was the fact that Sassa Gurl, who serves as Drag Den’s Drag Runner, joins her on the track. “She is such a star. I mean, she’s been making music now. And I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, we have to collab.’ Then at the premiere [of Drag Den 2], we got to perform our song together for the first time. And that went really well. I’m super excited. I hope to be able to perform with her more often.”

MANILA LUZON

Manila Luzon is no stranger to making music. And it helps that her Filipino roots have made singing a natural part of her life. But getting to do all of this as a drag queen makes it even better for the Drag Den host. “Once I gained popularity from being on television, I realized that this is an opportunity for me to do something original. And so I really like the fact that I have engaged my audience enough for them to enjoy a song that isn’t played on the radio necessarily, but that’s being made by a drag queen, a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, someone that’s accessible to them in a closer way. And it’s a lot of fun. I love making music. I love making the soundtrack to my drag.”

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL DRAG QUEEN

With Drag Den 2 upon us, the show looks to continue its advocacy for giving Philippine drag its due all while giving viewers (and the queens themselves) a few gags along the way. At the end of the day, that’s all Manila wants from the show. “I hope that our audience can fall in love with these drag queens, and I hope that the audience supports the drag queens as much as they’ve supported me throughout my drag career. And I’m really happy to be able to share this platform with these queens because this has been a wild ride for me, and I feel like they deserve some time in the spotlight as well.”

And if you love the show and what season 2 has to offer, Manila implores you to turn that into action, especially with how drag’s mainstream rise is being met by forces who try to dim its light. “We really appreciate it when people come to our shows. We appreciate when people recognize us when we’re not in drag. And those ways of showing appreciation go a long way. Liking our posts, commenting with hearts and smiley emojis, we love that kind of stuff. Sharing our projects with your followers.” Anything else, Manila? “And money, yeah.”

“The pressure makes us want to do really well. It serves as motivation for us to do better,” says the band’s leader, SHINYU. Read on the full exclusive interview below as the members dive into their anticipated debut with NYLON Manila.

First and foremost, congratulations on your debut! Introduce yourselves, give us one or two fun facts about yourselves, and tell us your vision as TWS in the K-pop industry.

SHINYU: Hello, this is SHINYU. I’m the youngest at home, but the oldest member and the leader in TWS.

DOHOON: Hi, my name is DOHOON, and I work really hard! I always make sure to reflect on how I did after each rehearsal and performance, striving to always improve myself!

YOUNGJAE: Nice to meet you! I’m YOUNGJAE, and I’m constantly thinking about what the “right” thing to do is, trying to make the right decisions.

HANJIN: Hello, I’m HANJIN from TWS! I like to describe myself as a warm and loveable person who enjoys taking photos!

JIHOON: Nice to meet you! This is JIHOON from TWS. Here’s an interesting fact about myself! I have a beauty spot right under my eye!

KYUNGMIN: Hello, I’m the youngest member of TWS, KYUNGMIN! I like to say that my strengths are my vocal tone and my smile!

A group’s debut album is crucial because it serves as the foundation or introduction of the group. What’s something Sparkling Blue has that you think is the perfect album to introduce TWS to the world?

YOUNGJAE: Sparkling Blue is an album that clearly identifies who our six members are today and our voices as they are now. It captures our energy and feelings as a newly starting artist, making it the perfect introduction.

HANJIN: Sparkling Blue is our first statement to the world as to who we are, so we put a lot of effort into delivering the vibrant, high-spirited energy that comes to life when the six of us are together as TWS.

Your journey as part of TWS will capture the beauty of youth found in daily life. Since the members were born between 2003~2007, how hard is your journey—to be an idol and a normal teenager at the same time? Are you able to find moments of fun and fulfillment during this time of your lives nevertheless?

DOHOON: I feel like I’m the same DOHOON, whether I’m on or off stage. Our members and I are quite good at finding happiness even in the small things, so we always find something to have a laugh about when we are together!

KYUNGMIN: I agree with DOHOON. I’m really grateful that I’ve been given an opportunity to pursue my dream at a relatively early stage of my life and I think the sort of energy I have because I’m at this stage of my life is what also makes me shine through as an artist. There are always moments of fun and fulfillment. I especially like to recharge by having good food with the members.

TWS

INSTAGRAM/TWS_PLEDIS

Were you able to discover any new facets of yourselves through the process of preparing for your debut?

SHINYU: There is still a lot for me to learn, but as we prepared for our debut, I began to see what it means to be a leader and learned more about how to take care of the closest people around me, the members. Just the sight of the members answering my suggestions or my questions in unison makes me feel things and brings a smile to my face.

JIHOON: What I learned about myself is that I truly love learning new things and building relationships with people I meet as we continue to move forward. I found so much happiness in the process. And sharing those joyful moments with the members I love made these experiences all the more precious. I realized that when I’m with the people I love, I gain the confidence and determination to overcome any challenges that come my way and create moments that shine even brighter.

You’re debuting under HYBE and PLEDIS as SEVENTEEN’s younger brother group, so it’s normal to feel pressure. Is this type of pressure a good one, and how do you plan to use it to even be better artists and performers in the future?

SHINYU: The “pressure” makes us want to do really well. It serves as motivation for us to do better. Embracing what one might label as pressure and taking it as a driving force, we aim to live up to the nickname “SEVENTEEN’s younger brothers” or “PLEDIS and HYBE’s super rookies.”

Could you please tell us more about the process of making and preparing for this album, from the recording process to the filming of the music video? Feel free to also share with us some memorable behind-the-scenes!

YOUNGJAE: We filmed the music video for plot twist in a school setting, and for one of the scenes we danced beneath a running fire sprinkler. It was such a thrilling experience, I’ve never danced while getting rained on!

KYUNGMIN: The final scene, filmed at a footbridge, stands out in my memory. Everyone was very hyped up because we had the mission of ensuring we captured the moment the train passed by in the background.

TWS

INSTAGRAM/TWS_PLEDIS

For your fans to get to know you more, could you share with us activities or hobbies you usually are doing or are interested in doing?

YOUNGJAE: I always love listening to music! Even outside the bounds of work, music, and singing are such big parts of my life as a whole.

HANJIN: I enjoy watching TV shows. Even after a late-night rehearsal, I watch an episode or two of a TV show when I’m back home. I also like taking photos, capturing random moments from everyday life in video, and turning it into a vlog! I really love recording my daily life.

What were your first impressions of each other?

SHINYU: When I first saw KYUNGMIN, I was surprised by how hard he works, be it singing or dancing. He works really hard to make everything his own. He may be the youngest, but he is such a professional.

DOHOON: YOUNGJAE is great to be around, he has the ability to lift spirits all around. So I thought of him as the ‘cute friend from Gimhae (where YOUNGJAE grew up)’ at first.

YOUNGJAE: Every one of the members has strong, distinct characters. They really caught my eye.

HANJIN: I remember DOHOON greeting me with a big smile on his face. I didn’t feel confident speaking Korean then, so I introduced myself somewhat awkwardly. He seemed very stylish and cool, so I thought about how I should get to know him better.

JIHOON: I thought SHINYU had already made his debut the first time I saw him because he was very tall, good-looking, and was such a big presence! I looked up to him for his kindness and politeness, certain that I would be able to learn a lot from him. The same goes for HANJIN. We are the same age, but he was very cute and extremely passionate at the same time. I know I would learn a lot from them.

KYUNGMIN: JIHOON put me in awe with his dance skills when I first saw him. And then I was pleasantly surprised once again when I saw how sweet and nice he is.

Tell something about your future self. This could be your goals, not just for your career as an idol but also for yourself, or maybe an encouraging message. And then when the time comes, let’s say in five years, you’ll come back to what you said.

SHINYU: In five years, I hope that I’m an artist who has the capacity to maintain health and a balanced lifestyle. Hopefully, I’ll have a hobby that I enjoy, one that allows me to unwind and find a sense of relief. I think it’ll be important for me to continue growing as both an artist and an individual.

DOHOON: I want to tell myself, “I hope you remember how you felt at the beginning of your journey as a member of TWS, especially for the members and fans who always support you!” Five years from now, my goal is to evolve into someone who consistently gives their 100% and someone my team members can lean on as we collectively strive to become better artists.

TWS

INSTAGRAM/TWS_PLEDIS

Is there anything that you’ve heard from your seniors, particularly SEVENTEEN, perhaps an encouraging message or an interaction with them that you think will help you with your journey along the way and you think you will never forget?

DOHOON: SEVENTEEN (sunbaenims) often visited us during our practices with words of encouragement and advice! They treated us to delicious food and even gifted each of us a pair of sneakers! Rather than specific advice or interaction, I think the relationship we have with them and just their presence, their story on its own will continue to help us along the way.

JIHOON: I want to thank SEVENTEEN (sunbaenims) for their advice on knowing the value of the members we’re always with as well as the time we have on stage. Also, many artists who walked this path before we did spoke to us about maintaining a healthy mindset as an artist. I’m grateful that we have seniors to talk to about these topics.

KYUNGMIN: It was really heartwarming when SEVENTEEN (sunbaenims) visited us to make sure we know they’re there for us and we’re well-fed! Our interactions with them drove us to work harder.

What was your inspiration and motivation to choose this path of being an idol?

HANJIN: I can’t think of a specific source of inspiration right now, but I think it was a process rather than a specific moment. My interest in music increasingly became stronger as I continued listening to music and watching the performances of artists. This eventually led me to pursue music professionally and here I am!

JIHOON: In choosing this path, a moment I remember distinctly is actually seeing myself in the mirror while dancing in the practice studio. I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the mirror, and I saw that I was fully immersed in the moment, so happy to be just singing and dancing.

We’re Here For This Laufey-Approved Tagalog Cover Of ‘From The Start’

Laufey ft. Filipino? Yes, please.

Let this be a sign that we’re getting a collab between Janine Tenoso and Laufey.

Among the many beautiful facets of Tagalog is how it changes the way certain things are said, and often for the better. There’s just something so beautiful about a piece that already moved us in its original language to be said or sung in Tagalog. It just hits different. Such was the case when Janine Tenoso decided to bless us with a Tagalog version of Gen Z jazz superstar Laufey’s hit song From The Start

If you’ve heard any of Laufey’s tracks, then you know how flawless her discography is with the way the music and lyrics come together to make the perfect OST for the hopeless romantic or freshly broken heart. Janine decided to show us what a Tagalog-ized version of Laufey sounds like, and we want more. Even Laufey herself had to stan.

SA SIMULA

@_janinemusic bored nanaman ako today i love u @laufey i did my best im from manila #fyp #tiktokmusikat #laufey #fromthestart ♬ original sound – Janine

Recently, Janine took to TikTok to share a snippet of her translated version of From The Start. While strumming on the guitar, she proceeds to body the cover with her striking vocals capturing the love story at the heart of the song. TBH, we see the vision as a heartfelt harana to that special someone. Laufey in Tagalog was something we never thought we’d see or hear, but here we are, and we high-key want more of it. We need the full cover Janine, ASAP.

The Tagalog lyrics add that extra spice to an already great song, something many netizens agreed with given how the video has over 170,000 likes on TikTok as of this writing. It even caught the attention of Laufey herself who not only reposted the video on TikTok but also commented on it as well. “Your voice is so crystal clear and this is so amazing,” she gushed as Janine replied and expressed her excitement to see her in Manila.

Speaking of Laufey, the Icelandic-Chinese musician is set to return to the Philippines this year for a sold-out two-night concert at the PICC Plenary Hall with the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra. Does this mean we might see Janine Tenoso do a special collab with Laufey at her concert? We hope so. A full Tagalog version of From The Start or just even Laufey covering any OPM song with a full orchestra behind them would eat at unparalleled levels. Regardless, we’re happy we live in a timeline where Laufey in Tagalog exists, and our fingers are crossed that we get to see more of it.

Actor and musician Kyle Echarri had his start long ago, and has stayed booked and busy since his The Voice Kids days. But as time passes and the 20-year old artist grows into a young adult, it’s clear that Kyle is leading man material. He’s had a busy couple of years, starring in 2022 youth-oriented series Beach Bros and Lyric and Beat, as well as in teleserye The Iron Heart (2022-2023). He recently skillfully portrayed the well-meaning, ill-fated Obet in teen drama Senior High (2023-2024) and is set to star in upcoming action-thriller Pamilya Sagrado across Piolo Pascual, Grae Fernandez, and Jeremiah Lisbo.

ELIJAH CANLAS

Indie king, film buff, and multi-awarded actor Elijah Canlas is certainly not a new figure in the industry. With multiple movie and television credits and FAMAS and Gawad Urian awards under his belt, the 23-year old has long established his skill as a versatile, bona fide actor. After starring in Kalel, 15 (2019), About Us But Not About Us (2022), and GomBurZa (2023), and fresh from his stint as Archie on Senior High, Elijah’s filmography is getting more stacked by the year, earning steady praise for portraying complex, barrier-breaking roles.

HARVEY BAUTISTA

You may know Harvey Bautista as a former Goin’ Bulilit cast member, along with one Belle Mariano, but the 19-year old is inching towards revived young star status. Currently making waves on social media as he returns to screens, Harvey is turning heads as Jiggs on youth-oriented reality show Zoomers. After proving his merit during talent search Project Zoomers, he stars as Jiggs alongside Criza Taa’s Hope—and their chemistry is undeniable enough that we’d love to see more from them and from Harvey as an actor.

ANTHONY JENNINGS

Play a lovable goofball so well and you’re set. Jokes aside, Anthony Jennings’ popularity has been on the rise since playing Snoop on DonBelle-starrer series Can’t Buy Me Love (2023-present). He’s previously held some supporting roles in movies and series, but the ever-viral Snoop is clearly his breakout role. The 23-year old came from some very humble beginnings, and it’s lovely to witness him get his flowers for his talent. His talent, comedic timing, and chemistry with co-star Maris Racal on screen keeps him on our radar.

RADSON FLORES

The Voltes V: Legacy (2023) star was director Mark Reyes’ first and only choice to play Mark Gordon in the sci-fi series based on hit anime Voltes V, and he’s earned praise for his portrayal of the character. The young actor got his start on Starstruck Season 7 (2019), and while he only placed ninth, he got his break with Voltes V and gets to follow the footsteps of many actors before him like Mark Herras, Paulo Avelino, and Miguel Tanfelix.

ZAIJAN JARANILLA

Santino’s all grown up and fine-tuning his craft. The award-winning Zaijan Jaranilla, best known for portraying Santino in May Bukas Pa (2009-2010), recently went viral for his role as Tim in Senior High (clearly a series that has catapulted some young actors into or back into the stratosphere), where he and fellow former child actor Xyriel Manabat acted their butts off in several scenes in the series. Zaijan continues to solidify his stature as a talented young actor, having booked roles all throughout his career, and we’re seated for what comes next.

BRENT MANALO

Brent Manalo is relatively the most “newbie” on this list, but the model-turned-actor is one to watch as he hones his screen talents, having bagged supporting roles in iWantTFC teen series Beach Bros (2022) and drama teleserye The Broken Marriage Vow (2022).

JEREMIAH LISBO

Former second lead turned leading man in his own right, Jeremiah Lisbo put his name on the map as the second-lead love interest of Belle Mariano’s Max in He’s Into Her (2021-2022). After working on love stories, thrillers, and dramas, Jeremiah’s debuted a new look in preparation for a role in Pamilya Sagrado, which is no doubt something quite different from his previous work.

TOMMY ALEJANDRINO

Theater-trained Tommy Alejandrino is also one who got his biggest break of his career so far in the past year. Just in 2023, the actor bagged supporting roles in Metro Manila Film Festival standouts Mallari and GomBurZa, as well as in Senior High, showing off his flexible talent as he adds both indie and mainstream screen experiences to the notches on his belt.

MICHAEL SAGER

The Filipino-Canadian multi-hyphenate first got his taste of the limelight as a backup dancer on Disney’s Descendants (2015). He made his film debut as a cast member of Five Breakups and a Romance (2023) and is shaping up to be a young talent to keep within your sights as he takes on more roles, and is set to star in upcoming GMA Network series Shining Inheritance, an adaptation of South Korean drama Brilliant Legacy (2009).

GRAE FERNANDEZ

You may know Grae for his recent role as Yosef in Senior High (seriously, props to the casting director for having an impeccable casting radar), where he proved he can handle an intense role, or as a member of boy group Gimme 5. Before Senior High, the actor took a short hiatus from Philippine showbiz to head to New York and train at the Stella Adler School of Acting, and is now set to star in upcoming series Pamilya Sagrado, rounding out the show’s cast of established and rising actors.
