Despite what some may say, that college degree is never out of reach. Just look at Nina Ellaine Dizon.

Society often likes to push the idea that completing your education should be a top priority before you do anything else in life. But the reality is that life doesn’t always work like that. There are moments when a straight shot in schooling is not on the cards due to a variety of factors. People do drop out of school and embark on a new path for themselves. But just because life decided that it had other plans for you, that doesn’t mean you can’t go back to finish your education. Just take a look at businesswoman and all-around body-positive baddie Nina Ellaine Dizon.

The Colourette Cosmetics and Fresh Formula founder has been open about being a college dropout. While she didn’t let that stop her from starting her businesses, she did achieve a long-held goal by finally finishing college as she recently received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Major in Marketing Management, from the Lyceum of the Philippines University. It’s an inspiring moment that we can take some important life lessons from, some of which we list below.

YOU CAN STILL FINISH YOUR EDUCATION WHILE WORKING ON YOUR CAREER

School is tough and can drain even the best of us. But just because your life has shifted to other possibilities doesn’t mean you can no longer get a degree. As they say, when there’s a will, there’s a way. If you want to finish your education, you can do so while juggling a career.

Even though Nina has a busy career handling multiple businesses, she still set her sights on her schooling. “Despite the success of my brands, completing my education was a persistent goal in mind, as I deeply understood the value of learning and ongoing innovation,” she shared in an Instagram post. So, don’t think that a career is enough to stop you from going to school.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO GET THAT DEGREE

While it is often assumed that education is something we get when we’re young, education has no time limit or deadline. Just because you weren’t able to finish school or were delayed doesn’t mean you won’t be able to complete it. Many colleges, schools, and universities allow students in their 30s, 40s, and beyond to either enroll for the first time or finish the degree they dropped. A family and a career weren’t enough to make Nina feel that it was too late to get that degree. Life isn’t a race, and we all have our own pace.

IT’S OK TO KEEP IT REAL ABOUT YOUR EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT

NINA ELLAINE DIZON

The stigma against people who didn’t finish school is real, which pushes some to not talk about their experiences or even lie about their educational attainment. Some think that there’s a shame in not being able to finish school in a regular amount of years, but many people are also in that same boat. Speaking up about these things can help destigmatize the idea that a dropout is someone to look down upon.

For Nina, while she admitted that she wasn’t proud of being a college dropout, she still was honest and open about her experiences. “People would often label me an inspiration—a college dropout who went on to establish renowned brands like Colourette and Fresh Formula. What they couldn’t see was that I wasn’t proud of the dropout label. Instead, I was unapologetic about my hustle and the hurdles I faced as an entrepreneur without a diploma.” There’s no shame in trying again and getting that diploma later in life nor should you feel embarrassed about it.

Bust out those outfits you wore to the Barbie movie and dress up as a group of Barbies (or Kens) in shades of pink, plenty of accessories, and a dash of glitter. Sure, so many people will be dressed as Barbies and Kens this Halloween, but who cares? If the entire event, the entire city, or the world looks like Barbieland for one night, we’re not complaining!

2521

group costume Ideas: 2521

X/CJnDrama

Strut your stuff down a street clad in classic 90’s throwback garb and you’ve got the makings of the characters from hit K-drama Twenty-Five Twenty-One. If you’re keen, and can scrounge up a couple of fencing outfits real quick, why not take it a step further by dressing up as Na Hee-do and Ko Yu-rim?

RUGRATS

Alright, someone bring out the adult-sized diaper. If someone’s willing to round out the squad by dressing up as the diaper-clad Tommy Pickles, the group costume should be done quite quickly and easily. Dress up as Chuckie, Angelica, Phil & Lil, Susie, Spike, Kimi, and maybe even the adults for a fun, nostalgic night.

Channel your inner K-pop or P-pop idols by dressing up in colorful, matching, layered outfits that could be seen on your favorite idols! Go for fresh summer comeback themes or dark, edgy ones and coordinate your outfits. Grab some microphones, put on some chains, layer plenty of very extra accessories, and commit to the bit by giving your group a name and a hand symbol (like GOT7’s or ITZY’s) for a unique yet easy barkada look for Halloween.

THE SHAZAM! FAMILY

The second Shazam! movie Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023) may not have had the best reception, but there’s no denying that the franchisee introduced us to some epic characters in the form of the Shazamily, six kids that turn into superheroes upon uttering the word “Shazam!” The costumes may look complicated, but honestly? Dress monochromatically in their respective colors, grab some sheets and DIY the logo, arm bands, and belts with some gold foil and you’re good to go.

THE PHINEAS & FERB GANG

group costume Ideas: phineas and ferb gang

Similar to Rugrats, this group costume of Phineas, Ferb, Isabella, Baljeet, and Buford is pretty casual and simple as long as you keep the color schemes, but you have to add a little bit of effort to hair, accessories, and demeanor. You can even ask some more friends to dress up as Candace, Stacy, Jeremy, and Vanessa as they also have pretty simple outfits. We’re a long way from summer, but this group costume will get people to remember how to spell the word for the plastic tip of a shoelace.

Coming across skin care products, let alone a whole set, specifically tailored to a particular skin type is like finding an oasis in the middle of a desert. But just because it is hard doesn’t mean it’s impossible, as we just found the ideal skincare for sensitive skin girlies in tropical countries dreaming of translucent and transparent glass skin.

Glass skin is often associated with radiant complexions, with products mainly catering to East Asian skin used to cooler climates. Whereas in Southeast Asia, the climate usually leans toward humidity. Additionally, each skin type requires different needs, depending on their genetics. These factors have made Southeast Asian skin prone to sensitivity and oiliness.

By understanding these differences, YOU Beauty has launched a roster of products addressing the needs of your soon-to-be glowing aura with their latest skincare series for sensitive and oily skin: Radiance Glow

Together with renowned cosmetic research and development expert Mr. Tadahiro Shimada, YOU Beauty continues their mission of empowerment and inclusivity through their products. These two skincare giants have successfully curated the best Japan-based formula for sensitive skin.

Fusing in Mizu Glow Technology, which is known for its mild and high-efficiency skin brightening,   the formula is infused with Japanese Cherry Blossom Extract, reducing melanin production for a brighter complexion. Talk about the dream team!

Achieve that illuminated look through this 5-step routine you should get going with.

Purify and Refresh

Changes in temperature and chemicals from skin care ingredients can easily irritate skin. To cater to this, Radiance Glow Purifying Facial Foam (P299) offers a gentle formula that effectively cleanses and brightens your complexion without stripping your skin barrier.

Its rich and dense foam are key players in ensuring your skin is deeply cleansed, fusing effectivity and delicateness into one wash. Cored with Amino Acid Formula, C-three Complex, Niacinamide, and Sakura Extract, there is no better way to cleanse and brighten your complexion without stripping your skin barrier. Absolutely perfect for those with sensitive skin!

Polish and Hydrate

The build-up of dead skin cells, dehydration, and lack of moisture typically cause dull skin. Well, fear not, because YOU got your back. Supercharged with C-three Complex, Niacinamide, Sakura Extract, and Panthenol, Radiance Glow Toner Essence (P329) is a game changer in reducing dullness for a glowing skin look.

This lightweight toner essence texture will refresh your skin without feeling sticky, retaining moisture for visibly plumper and glowing skin. Here’s your gateway to glass skin!

Brighten and Smooth

With Asian skin being more vulnerable to acne scars and dark spots because of its thin protective barrier for underlying skin tissue, Radiance Glow Illuminating Serum (P499) is your next new solid holy grail.

Lock in that healthy, glowing complexion with this serum, formulated with C-three Complex, Niacinamide, Sakura Extract, and Bisabolol to help calm the skin and strengthen the skin barrier.

Radiance Glow Illuminating Serum’s lightweight texture glides on and absorbs quickly into the skin, seeping in that illuminating formula for healthy, glowing skin.

Glow and Protect

Asians naturally produce more melanin, making them prone to skin discoloration. That is why Radiance Glow Advanced Day Cream (P499) might be your new outdoor best friend. This lightweight and non-greasy cream equipped with sunscreen agents will protect your skin from harmful UV rays. This soothing agent is enriched with C-three Complex, Niacinamide, Sakura Extract, and Bisabolol to brighten and calm the skin.

Repair and Renew

What’s a better way to end your day than giving your skin ample rest and pamper with YOU’s round-the-clock company? Get yourself a Radiance Glow Advanced Night Gel (P469), complete with C-three Complex, Niacinamide, Sakura Extract, and Panthenol to ensure radiant and supple skin in the morning. It’s the perfect way to end your day as it is infused with Lavender aroma for overnight relaxation.

6 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Got My First Job

line
It's another world you might not be ready for.

Note to my past self, there’s no need to rush when it comes to getting that first job.

Related: What To Do When It Feels Like Everything Is Already Going Wrong At Your First Job

Once you finish school, the world is technically your oyster as you’re free to do anything you want. And for many people, that (sadly) means entering the dreaded job hunt. Getting a job is the goal that nearly every segment of our lives has been pushing us to do. But while it’s one thing to enter and navigate a stressful and tough job market, it’s another to say yes to a job and enter the workforce. Going from being part of the unemployment statistic to the employed statistic can be a world shift that comes with a set of challenges that many may not prepared for.

I should know as I still remember how excited and terrified I was signing my first contract. Little did I know that my life was low-key about to change, for better and worse. Years later, I’ve learned some things that probably would have made the younger me have an easier time at work and maybe as well as the fresh grads who are entering the workforce for the first time.

YOU (PROBABLY) WON’T HAVE TIME FOR YOURSELF

via GIPHY

Jobs can come in a variety of opportunities, from office jobs to freelance gigs. In my case, I work a 10-to-7 with a hybrid office setup from Monday to Friday. But regardless of what kind of job you have, one thing I learned is how much time it takes away from you. Unless you have flexible hours, your job sucks up so much of your time you barely have free time for yourself.

You’re either too busy getting ready for work in the morning or too tired once your shift is done. It then leaves you with the weekend for your free time, but we all know those two days go by in a snap of a finger.

THERE’S NO NEED TO RUSH

via GIPHY

I graduated in May 2020, the first batch of the pandemic generation. Understandably, I put off finding a job for the rest of the year as I, and the rest of the world, dealt with the initial onslaught of COVID-19. But looking back, I wish I didn’t jump so soon into getting my first job at the start of 2021.

I understand the job market these days can be brutal, but you shouldn’t feel the need to move on from one point of your life to the next so quickly. Hustle culture has made us think that not keeping busy is a sign of laziness, but it’s not. Whether you’re taking your time to find the job that’s right for you or just want to enjoy your free time, savor that lull before you enter the workforce.

MONEY CAN GO BY FAST

via GIPHY

I still remember the first time I got my first paycheck. As the lockdown kept me at home for most of 2021 and the money came pouring in, I was over the moon seeing my savings grow. That is, until, the lockdown lifted and I was spending faster than the price of gas was going up. Saving money? In this economy? With how expensive everything is these days, I sadly didn’t realize that I was spending more than I was earning, which is why I wished my younger self took saving money seriously.

Unless you make six figures or live off generational wealth, money can deplete fast. As early as your first paychecks, make it a habit to keep track of your spending and set aside a set amount per payday to an emergency fund.

YES, THERE CAN BE WORKPLACE DRAMA

via GIPHY

I thought that after I graduated high school, all that petty drama I experienced would be left in the past. But the corporate and professional worlds can be high-stress environments where egos meet ambitions. Sadly, that means some people may look down on you just because they feel that they’re better than you or that you don’t deserve to be where you are.

I unfortunately had to deal with that petty drama that made me feel like I was back in high school. TBH, it can be demoralizing. But at the end of the day, you have a job to do, and you shouldn’t let what other people think about you stop you from doing what you do best.

THE FIRST JOB IS JUST THE START OF YOUR CAREER

via GIPHY

I feel blessed with the fact that my job is in a field I’ve always dreamed of being a part of. But everyone has their journey to finding their calling. And one thing I learned was that the first job is just the first chapter of your career. Of course, it would be nice to have your first job be your dream job and stick with it for the years to come. But the reality is that things don’t always work out the way you want.

Whether it’s because you dislike your co-workers, feel that you can grow in other opportunities, or the work sucks, don’t feel discouraged from resigning and seeking another job that’s more fit for you. Also, if you’re having a bad day at work, don’t beat yourself too much about it. You’re just starting out, it’s ok if you don’t know everything.

YOUR JOB SHOULDN’T BE YOUR WHOLE LIFE

via GIPHY

If I could go back in time and tattoo this statement on the forehead of my 2021 self, I would. In my desire to do my responsibilities and prove myself as a valuable team member, I would often spend so much of my time dedicated to my job, even when I was done with my shift. I attached myself so much to my output at work to the point where if it wasn’t received well, I would take it personally. My physical, mental, and emotional health was draining because I was so preoccupied with my work.

While it’s okay if you want to prove yourself at your job or organize your professional endeavors, there’s a danger to attaching your purpose in life solely to your occupation. There should be a clear divide between what you do at work and who you are as a person because people, myself included, fall into the trap that self-worth is determined by our job, which should not be the case. I almost quit my dream job because of how much of myself I was giving to it and feeling like I was getting nothing in return. At the end of the day, what you do professionally is just a part of who you are, not the whole picture.

Which Is Better For You: School Organizations or Internships?

line
Good luck!

As someone who has experienced both school organizations and internships, I’m here to spill the tea on which one’s your best bet.

Related: 6 Trademarks of Gen Z Interns, According to TikTok

When it comes to college life, people cherish their experiences in school organizations as the best days of their academic years. Whether it’s forging friendships, working with like-minded mentors, or getting experience in fields you enjoy, there’s no denying the significance of these moments. But wait, what about internships? While they are often the first chance for students to experience the “real world”, internships sometimes play second fiddle, often labeled as mere prerequisites for those students on the brink of grad-waiting. But there’s no denying there benefits, which leads to some students being torn between investing their time and extra effort in school organizations or internships.

As someone who has experienced both school organizations and internships, I can attest to the advantages of both, but with internships coming out as a winner to bring to one’s personal and professional development. Here’s why I think so.

Career Clarity

At a young age, I knew I had always wanted to become a part of the beauty industry. All the steps I took were directed toward a college program, internship, and a career path that aligned with my skill set and long-term goals. However, when you’re presented with all of these post-college choices, it’s hard to know what will truly work for you. If you’re a current communication major, you could pursue roles as a producer, director, writer, or other career roles—the possibilities are limitless. The same applies to every college program, and this is where internships come into the picture.

Internships serve as a testing ground for your career aspirations. They allow you to explore your chosen field firsthand, helping you determine whether it aligns with your long-term goals and interests. On the other hand, school organizations, while valuable in their own right, may not provide the same depth of insight into your future career path.

Welcome to the Real World

In relation to the first part, I could have pursued a career as an advertiser or a magazine writer in the beauty industry, and I wouldn’t have gained career clarity if I hadn’t completed three internships that provided me with real-world experiences. This is something that school organizations often lack because they tend to align with your current course.

While school organizations offer extracurricular involvement, they often can’t replicate the day-to-day responsibilities you’ll encounter in a professional setting. After interning in advertising, editorial, and public relations, I had the opportunity to work with people and projects that went beyond the typical ‘requirements’ on campus. That said, I also realized the truths behind those three industries, gaining insight into their inner workings, the challenges they face, and the vital roles they play in the larger landscape.

Soft Skills vs. Skills Specific to Your Career Choice

While school organizations offer you the chance to hone skill sets, it can be limiting all while demanding the same time and extra effort. For example, when I entered the school magazine, I learned about article writing, sentence structure, and all that. However, it was during my role as an editorial intern that I truly realized the significance of establishing a particular voice that connects with the audience, and the essential skill of managing time sensitive stories in the world of editorial work.

Adding to that, internships allow you to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios. In comparison to soft skills like leadership, teamwork, and time management, you will gain practical skills, deepen your understanding of your field, and develop problem-solving abilities that can’t be fully replicated in a school organization or classroom.

Nail Networking Opportunities

I remember applying to two more internships and securing my dream position, all thanks to my first internship. After attending events, photoshoots, and seminars assigned by my mentor, I had the chance to meet industry professionals and make new friends who became essential stepping stones in shaping the person and career woman I am today.

In contrast with school organizations, where you’re surrounded by the same professors and peers, internships offer a once-in-a-lifetime chance to connect with more people who share the same passions, interests, and skills that you’ll need in the next chapter of your career. Imagine meeting your potential colleagues and employers even before you graduate from college?

Practical Experiences Enhance That Resume

While adding a long list of extracurricular activities and school organizations to your resume is common, recruiters often place a higher emphasis on practical experiences, particularly when you lack real-world work experience. Internships provide tangible proof of your skill set and capabilities. Including internships on your resume not only showcases your practical experience and industry knowledge but also demonstrates your commitment to your chosen career path. This commitment can be a crucial factor in persuading potential employers during interviews.

Make Money!

While not all internship programs are paid, many are. Earning money while gaining hands-on experience can help cover educational expenses and allowance. This financial compensation is a significant advantage over most school organizations, which are usually unpaid.

Again, not all internship programs are paid. However, note that the company should shoulder all out-of-office tasks and transportation.

Ready to Start Monday?

Internships often lead to full-time offers. By demonstrating your skills and dedication during an internship, you increase your chances of getting absorbed by the same organization once you graduate. This transition from intern to employee is a significant kick-start to your career. If not, internships serve as assets during interviews and when considering other offers. To this day, I’m eternally grateful to the mentors, industry people, and life lessons I gained with my internships—I wouldn’t be here without them.

5 Secrets We Learned From The Cast Of A Very Good Girl

line
Who knew?

The cast of A Very Good Girl revealed their juicy secrets in a fun game, and let us learn a thing or two about them—and a little bit about life itself!

Related: Life Lessons And Hard Truths We’re Taking From A Very Good Girl

To promote the well-recieved dark comedy A Very Good Girl, cast members Kathryn Bernardo, Dolly de Leon, Kaori Oinuma, Chie Filomeno, and Gillian Vicencio played a secrets game, where they first have to guess whose secret is being revealed before the owner of the secret comes out and admits it. Some secrets were spicy, some were hilarious and out-of-pocket, some were relatable, and some were simply interesting to learn about.

Brave and confident enough in themselves to share their experiences and stories, these five women exemplified a refreshing dynamic that’s authentic, fun, and relatable. While their onscreen dynamic differed in many ways, Kathryn, Dolly, Kaori, Chie, and Gillian showed the genuine relationship they had with each other as they laid bare some secrets and truths that we could all learn a thing or two from. Check out what we took away from these ladies below!

STARS OFTEN LIE ABOUT THEIR AGE

You’ve probably encountered this if you’re into K-Pop or heard about it because of Mila Kunis, but celebrities do lie about their age! Dolly De Leon did for a commercial, and she shares that she often adjusts her age higher or lower since many projects require talent to be a certain age. Kathryn remarks that plenty of people do it, and that there’s often the practice of celebrities having different screen ages and birthdays.

KAORI IS ENDLESSLY RESPONSIBLE AND KIND

Kaori Oinuma, who plays Rigel in the film, revealed than when she was about 17, she worked as a caregiver for older people in Japan voluntarily during one summer vacation. She helped them eat, wash up, and assisted in daily tasks. The others offered praise for the young artist, admitting that any job like that is hard work and those who do it deserve respect.

WASH YOUR NEW CLOTHES BEFORE YOU WEAR THEM

This is probably a given, and I relate to Kathryn on a personal level here. New clothes just feel strange—whether or not they’re actually clean, they always “feel” dirty. The actress revealed she hates the smell and the feeling of new or newly-sewn clothes, so it’s a must to clean them before wearing. And this doesn’t apply to just clothes you bought at the ukay-ukay, but also any new clothes you bought in-store or online! Even if the piece was clean, it’s always good to have good hygiene practices.

RESPECT THE GIRL CODE

Kathryn’s truly a girl’s girl. She reveals that if there’s ever a situation where a partner is up to no good, her loyalty is always skewed towards the girl. She sticks to the Girl Code—she would never date a friend’s ex, and she wouldn’t be hesitant to call a friend and tell them what she witnessed if a guy was cheating. “Hindi ako enabler.” Kathryn doesn’t condone any kind of disrespect in relationships, and we should all follow in her footsteps.

THERE’S NO SHAME IN VERY HUMAN EXPERIENCES

From having to pee in plastic bags and plastic cups, to eating boogers as a child, the A Very Good Girl cast proves that they’re just like us, even down to the embarrassing experiences and impulsive thoughts. And by being celebrities so open to talking about them—no matter how mundane—they’re able to perpetuate that there’s absolutely no shame in these very real human experiences, no matter how judgmental we’re growing, exacerbated by the media and the internet. In fact—there’s plenty of humor and respect to be found in them.

“Masarap ang kulangot, guys,” Dolly shares after it was revealed she was the one who ate her boogers at 6 years old. As their secrets were revealed, each cast member, through peals of laughter, showed how respectful and non-judgmental they were. It’s the mark of good relationships, and the fact that they were able to laugh about their stories and experiences, with absolutely no kaartehan or judgment, is wonderful to watch given that a lot of us fear similar kinds of judgment in any kind of friendship or relationship, and even on social media. Dolly encapsulates the essence of it all with a tinge of humor:

“Ngayon alam ko na pag na-ihi ako sa sasakyan, hindi nila ako iju-judge.”

Pinoy Meets World: HORI7ON Is Navigating Life One Milestone At A Time

line
Pinoy roots, global potential.

Whether as a global pop group or as Gen Z Filipinos, HORI7ON is making and taking space in a world that can be so unfamiliar.

Related: 10 Highlights From HORI7ON’s First Concert in Manila That Made Dreams Come True

It’s no secret that Filipino talent is worthy of the global stage. From our regular karaoke gatherings to our kababayans on Broadway, there is no shortage of potential here. But potential doesn’t automatically translate to making it across borders. Whether it’s a lack of opportunities, resources, or platforms, there are homegrown Pinoy talents who miss making their mark in the world because of barriers both external and internal. However, as we’ve seen through the years, with fiery dedication, unrivaled passion, and just the right timing, it is possible and it can be done. HORI7ON, who just debuted last July, epitomizes that story – what it means for stars to align and to have the willpower to make your dreams come alive.

A year ago, Vinci, Kim, Kyler, Reyster, Winston, Jeromy, and Marcus were young Filipinos contemplating whether or not they should join the reality competition show Dream Maker. After several rounds of competition and a historic debut later, HORI7ON is living it. And as they set on their worldwide voyage, these seven young men are making space for themselves and telling their story.

GOING GLOBAL

HORI7ON is not even a year old and yet they already have achievements akin to those of a veteran group. The global pop group is the first all-Filipino boy group to debut in South Korea and the first all-Filipino group to perform in some of the country’s biggest music shows. Their debut album, Friend-SHIP, has sold tens of thousands of copies. Additionally, just 47 days into their careers, they held a concert at the Araneta Coliseum.

Even with so many milestones under their belt, when HORI7ON arrived for their cover shoot, they were just regular Gen Z Filipinos who, in between their turns, were dancing to K-pop songs, scrolling on their phones, and hyping up their members who gave face cards that never declined.

You wouldn’t think that these boys have history riding on their shoulders, but they don’t take the moment for granted. “It represents a lot of things, especially for Filipinos,” says Vinci on what it means to be a global pop group. The title feels particularly special as Vinci sees the impact of what HORI7ON does on a new generation of Filipinos who see that their dreams are valid. “Back when I was thirteen and if I saw HORI7ON on YouTube, I’d be ‘Oh, I can do that too.’ And I hope that is what we give out and resonate and inspire a lot of young Filipinos.”

The reception the group has had, particularly in Korea, has stood out as a special moment for them. There is no one quite like HORI7ON in the Korea, yet many Koreans have welcomed these seven Filipinos in their teens and early twenties with open arms as the septet has made loving and passionate fans, called ANCHORs, across all four corners of the world. “Sobrang masaya po kami. Hindi naming inaasahan na makakatanggap ng maraming suporta galing sa iba’t-ibang lahi. We’re just very grateful and happy that they appreciate the Filipino talents,” shares Winston. “Akala ko lalamukin kami kasi mga Filipino kami pero [nung naperform] namin yung debut namin, kahit mga cameraman pumalakpak para sa amin po,” candidly adds Kim.

It’s been a journey, to say the least, for these boys as they adjust to being a global group in the public spotlight. And yes, that includes getting shipped by their fans. “It’s so funny because the imagination they have for that is wild,” muses an amused Vinci. “It’s very interesting to see the ships come to life with the TikToks and clips. I’m so glad ANCHORs are interested enough in HORI7ON to build those types of ships.”

ADULTING MOMENTS

While HORI7ON makes what they do look easy, the boys had to pour in a lot of effort to reach where they are now and where they will be in the months and years to come. It’s been well-documented how the members struggled to adapt to the training as they left their families to move to Korea. And while the struggle is real, so too is the conviction to adapt to their new settings. “Kinaya ko naman sa tulong ng mga kuya ko and sa tulong ng mga coaches naming doon and sa staff po,” expresses Jeromy, who said that he’s at an 8.5/10 in terms of being fully adapted to Korea.

After all, getting to live in a new country away from your family nudges you into early adulting, something the members already have experience with from their time at Dream Maker. On the adulting moments he’s had in Korea, Kyler shares, “Natutunan ko yung sumunod sa tamang oras. Kailangan on time ka kasi bawal po ma-late kahit nang isang minuto.”

Aside from the responsibilities as a group and taking care of their dorm, the members also shared that they find time for R&R like playing video games and watching anime. Behind the pop star life are seven young men who do things most barkadas who live together have to deal with.

TAKING UP SPACE

To be thrust into a world that can be unwelcoming can be scary – even more so when you’re young. To add to that, the responsibility of often being the only Filipinos in the room can make it seem daunting. But for HORI7ON, being who they are is not a curse, but a blessing. “That’s what we’re so proud of,” says Vinci on Filipino representation on a global scale.

“It’s such an honor to represent the Philippines kasi nga kami yung first talagang Filipino boy group na nag-debut as South Korea kaya it’s such an honor to have that opportunity. Everyday, lagi kaming thankful na nagperperform kami doon at nasa South Korea [kami]. It was just our dream before, but I think collectively it has become the dream of everyone. I hope everyone is looking at us and are proud of us.”

Their mere existence is historic as they make room for themselves in a space that wasn’t originally made for them. And to do so at such a young age is, as Reyster sees it, a joyous occasion. “Super happy po ako. Ang bilis ng pangyayari pagkatapos ng Dream Maker. Sana po magbloom ang group namin.” From making moves in Korea to traveling the world, the boys manifested their dreams, attendance at the Asia Artist Awards 2023 this December at the Philippines Arena included.

“Last year, we were all watching that and we thought, it must be nice to be able to perform there, and here we are,” says a shocked Marcus, who thanked ANCHORs for making it a reality.

And even if HORI7ON may have songs in Korean and have a Korean team, don’t get it twisted, these seven young men are Pinoy through and through. Even as a global pop group, the members still find ways to add that signature Filipino flavor to what they do. “We made songs that are in full Filipino,” points out Marcus with regards to their track Mama.

As for other Filipino-coded moments from the Gen Z group, Marcus says, “I think we really got to show a unique personality, the Filipino humor is something that I think a lot of ANCHORs love about us. Especially in K-pop, sometimes you have to be formal but since Filipinos are often casual, I’m sure it’s something everyone loves about us.”

OVER THE HORIZON

Understandably, all of this comes with pressure not many Gen Z Filipinos can relate to, and neither can HORI7ON look to many predecessors to see how it was done. What the group does moving forward may very well lay the groundwork for the next generation of Filipino artists who want to make their mark across borders. So, as early as now, the group takes the pressures and, more importantly, the responsibility of representing Filipinos seriously.

“In Korea, it’s a pool of Korean idols, and we’re the only Filipinos there. It’s intimidating to be honest because they already know the culture, and we’re the first Filipinos to experience that. Any wrong move we make can be a wrong move for the country. We always try to be gentle, adapt to their culture, and be good Filipinos,” Vinci expresses.

At a young age, they understand the responsibility they have with their platform and want to use that energy as a blueprint of sorts for young Filipinos like them. “It makes us feel that it is our responsibility to represent the Philippines,” says Winston matter-of-factly. “But kami yung light na nag-eenlighten sa Filipino dreamers na yung talents nila hindi lang lokal, makikita din internationally.”

From Manila to Seoul and the rest of the globe, HORI7ON is doing what they love as they continue to navigate and take up space that is deserving of Filipinos. Whether as musicians or Gen Z Filipinos, these talented young men are further proof that representation does matter as they help local talent be seen and heard. The band is true to their name. And when the going gets tough, they know they have each other to rely on.

As Marcus adequately puts it, “All of us struggle. It wasn’t a smooth journey. Everyone had their worst points and best points during this long journey. But one thing is for sure, we are here for each other and that’s the most important thing. We’re not doing this alone. All seven of us are doing this together, and that makes it easier. We’re always here for each other and we always uplift each other.”

The week is done, so it’s time for some much-needed me-time this weekend and beyond. Fuel your energies for wherever your life may take you with this round-up of some of the week’s best tracks. You may want to get that AUX cord ready.

CHASING THAT FEELING – TOMORROW X TOGETHER

TXT’s latest comeback sees the boys play with 80s pop sound for a youthful and energetic track with a sentimental message.

TURN BACK TIME – ZACK TABUDLO AND VIOLETTE WAUTIER

Centering on heartbreak, this duet is sung from the perspective of a couple in the throes of pain post-breakup and takes the listener through the longing and regret after leaving a relationship that you tried hard to save.

ONE OF YOUR GIRLS – TROYE SIVAN

This 80s synth-pop cut from Troye Sivan’s new album that serves as a celebration of sex, dance, sweat, community, queerness, love and friendship tickles the ears in all the right places as it delves into those relationships we would rather keep under the sheets.

COURAGE (ACOUSTIC VERSION) – BEN&BEN

This stripped-back take evokes the power of surviving personal setbacks in life to the dreamers who are struggling to pull up the strength to confront an unforgiving world.

YOU’LL BE SAFE HERE – MOIRA DELA TORRE

Moira’s take on the classic song, which serves as the theme song for Can’t Buy Me Love, captures the sentimentality but in a somewhat modern lens.

BADDIE – IVE

If Kitsch had a sister, it would probably be Baddie. It’s a versatile departure from Off The Record.

PRETTY GIRL – ICE SPICE AND REMA

Sure, the song may just be two minutes long, but the killer beat and flow makes up for it.

JACUZZI – JAMES REID AND B.I

This dynamic fusion between James’ melodious vocals and B.I’s signature raps is as fun as it feels like being in a jacuzzi.

YOUR UNIVERSE – ARTHUR MIGUEL

From vocals to production, Arthur takes subtle sentimentality to a whole new level.

CAPABLE OF LOVE – PINKPANTHRESS

With strong production lifting her, PinkPanthress unloads on a special someone on whether or not they have the capacity to treat her right.

C’MON – JINI AND AMINE

We’re living for the house beat and anti-drop of the song. It’s clear the former NMIXX member turned soloist still has a promising career ahead of her.

BITTERSWEET – CLINTON KANE

With vocals as power as the production, this track speaks to how the pursuit of love doesn’t always lead to happiness.

IDWTEXTUBABY – KINDRED

The vibes are immaculate. If you get it you get it.

DANCE LIKE YOU – BENJ PANGILINAN

Encapsulating the essence of youthful excitement in a euphoric, the four-minute pop song sees the young musician grab his dancing shoes to sing about seizing the moment with a cheerful disposition in life and love.

4TH IMPACT – DISTORTED

This lively and energetic anthem thrills with bright striking synths, soaring soul-baring vocals and colliding rhythms as it focuses on a relationship facing a breakup and portraying a woman’s determination to assert her worth and stand up for what is right.

Imagination comes alive.

Look to the sky as Anne Curtis, Julia Barretto, James Reid, and more serve the mythology and folklore fantasy for Opulence Ball 2023.

Do you hear that? It’s the sound of skull masks rattling in the distance, scarecrows ready to have their moment, and carved pumpkins getting out of retirement as we get closer and closer to Halloween. Party plans have been set as many are getting ready to serve with their Halloween costume(s) this year. And when it comes to Halloween parties in the Metro, no one does it quite like the Opulence Ball as their recent teaser for this year’s festivities shows many of the country’s top stars bring Mount Olympus to the Philippines.

SERVING OPULENCE

In case you need a refresher, Opulence, which was first held in 2019, is a one-of-a-kind Halloween Ball that goes all out on the decor, costumes, and guest list. The iconic event highlights the artistry and creativity of Filipinos as its masterminds and creative duo, Mond Gutierrez and Ash Rye, collaborated with the country’s top event stylists to transform a venue into an opulent wonderland filled with mesmerizing installations.

Plain and boring is nowhere near the vocabulary of the Opulence Ball, which is no wonder it has become one of the most anticipated Halloween events of the year. It marries everything we love about Halloween with glamour for an unforgettable party.

STARS OF THE NIGHT

This year, Opulence returns with the theme of a modern take on Filipino, Greek, Roman, and other mythologies. It’s a culturally and artistically deep theme to mine ideas from with possible interpretations coming in all forms, shapes, sizes, and looks. And as a sizzle of what Opulence Ball’s take on mythology and folklore will be, they recently dropped a teaser video that showcases a mythical spectacle into a cosmic realm where stars align, and glamor and fashion take on a celestial form.

Stars who we peeped serving celestial realness included Anne Curtis, Pia Wurtzbach, Julia Barretto, James Reid, Celeste Cortesi, Chie Filomeno, and Kylie Versoza. Even the constellations are jealous of how star-studded the teaser video is. And the best part? The celebs were dressed in creations by Anthony Ramirez, Rajo Laurel, Bonita Penaranda, Martin Bautista, Jerome Lorico, Patty Ang, and Job Dacion. Some of the country’s top designers presented their unique and stunning interpretations of the theme that combined Filipino craft with the cultural richness of mythology. It’s giving god and goddess energy.

“Our teaser video is a glimpse into the celestial wonders of an unforgettable night that we’ve curated,” says Mond Gutierrez. “It will be a night where fantasy and reality seamlessly intertwine.” Adds Ash Rye, co-producer of Opulence, “What sets Opulence apart is our passion for crafting fantastical experiences that transcend expectations. The teaser video features a constellation of stars, a promise of a night of enchanting fashion and alluring Filipino creativity.”

The fact that the teaser video is already serving this much probably tells us that we’re not ready for the slayage at the ball. The 2023 Opulence Halloween Ball goes down on October 31 at the Marquis Events Place in BGC, Taguig City.
