From horror movies to the hottest parties, a boring Halloween is practically non-existent with these scary good activities.
While the Christmas decorations in the malls and the holiday songs playing on the radio might make you think that December 25 is just around the corner, we are still, in fact, neck-deep in the Halloween spirit and season. And besides, we can do all that in November and December. Let’s celebrate the spooky szn now.
TBH, life itself is already scary enough as it is, but that doesn’t mean Halloween 2023 should be slept on because it’s the perfect time to surround yourself with frights, things that go bump in the night, and of course candy. If you’re Halloween itinerary is currently looking a little dry, we’ve got you covered with these activities you don’t want to miss out on.
BINGE-WATCH THE YEAR’S BEST HORROR MOVIES
If the idea of dressing up for a Hallowing party is just not the vibe this year, then you can get cooped up in your bed and commence that horror movie marathon. And in case you haven’t had the time to watch them (or were too scared to see them in cinemas), 2023 had its fair share of horror movies that give what needs to be given. What better way to catch up or rewatch the year’s best frightening films than during Halloween either by yourself or with your friends?
It just hits different to watch a horror movie in October. And whether it be foreign or local, you won’t be running out of movies to fill the watch time. From M3GAN, Evil Dead Rise, Talk To Me, In My Mother’s Skin, and more, it’s going to be a memorable evening or two.
SERVE HALLOWEEN REALNESS WITH LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL DRAG QUEENS
On October 28, drag (horror) queen excellence is taking over the night as Beyond Limits Event Production presents HalloQueen, which will be hosted by OV Cunt and is billed as the biggest Halloween Ball in the Metro. Filipino queens such as Bernie, M1ss Jade So, and Arizona Brandy will serve it to you alongside international winners Krystal Versace and Sasha Colby. Oh, and the winner of the best costume will get tens, tens, tens across the board and receive a cash prize of 5,000 pesos. It all goes down at Baked Studios Makati.
Speaking of drag queen Halloween parties, another will go down at Lyf Malate Manila on the 27th called Drag-O-Ween, which will feature appearances from OV Cunt, M1ss Jade So, and Matilduh. Accompany your Halloween adventures, parties, movie marathons, and more with some equally appropriate snacks. For those in the mood for a bloody sweet treat, KFC has their Muddy Bloody Kreamball, a vanilla soft serve served with a drizzle of beery sauce and a pinch of MILO, all served in a plastic ball cup. Starbucks has their Purple Monster Doughnut and Screamy Cherry Licious Fritter.
Brother’s Burger is brought back their Jack-O burger, which is topped with fresh lettuce, grilled tomatoes, carrots, red onions, homemade mayonnaise, and pesto sauce all sandwiched in a pumpkin bun. Meanwhile, Krispy Kreme go for a classic in their Scooby Dooby Doo and Mystery Machine doughnuts. Writing this already makes us hungry,.
IMMERSE YOURSELF IN HORROR PODCASTS
This Halloween, the spooky vibes aren’t just going to be the things we see, but also hear, too. And to do just that, Spotify recently launched Narinig Mo Ba, a slate of horror podcast episodes from creators including Kwentong Takipsilim, Wag Kang Lilingon, Philippine Campfire Stories, and Creepsilog. Catering to all kinds of horror enthusiasts or even curious novices, these episodes range from intriguing discussions on famous local haunted spots in the Philippines to engaging narratives of personal horror encounters. Check them out through the dedicated Takot Muna playlist.
SPICE UP THE TYPICAL HALLOWEEN PARTY
Sure, you’re free to go to any Halloween party. But why go to a basic bash when you can party it up at one of the biggest ones of them all? This year, XYLO At The Palace is back with their much-anticipated Halloween party as the popular BGC club will hold their spooktacular celebrations (yes, multiple) on October 31 with a line-up of bloody-good DJs and a dash of Halloween madness.
Also in the BGC neighborhood is the return of their Scare Street event happening on October 28 at the BGC Amphitheater. Apotheka Manila will play host to queer space Church’s CHURCH VI: Bloodbath Inferno Halloween party. Over on at Quezon City, Mow’s Bar and All Cool Girls Inc. will be hosting a Halloween party called BABY, DON’T CRY, which will have a whole host of goodies for guest to enjoy. And if a night of music is what you’re after, then head on over to Thriller Night, an OPM gig at 19 East with an A-list lineup that includes Gracenote, Monstar88, 6cyclemind, and more.
CATCH UP ON THE NEWEST VOLUME OF TRUE PHILIPPINE GHOST STORIES
There are a few things as impactful in your formative years than reading True Philippine Ghost Stories in school. And just in time for Halloween, the iconic horror series is returning to print once more. PSICom, the book series’ publisher, announced that they’d be reprinting the ten original volumes of the anthology series in celebration of its 20th anniversary. The best part? The reprint will also come with a brand new volume filled with thrilling new tales that will have you looking over your shoulder.
SEE CLASSIC HORROR MOVIES IN THE CINEMAS
Nothing beats the experience of watching a horror movie in the cinema, especially with Saw X and The Exorcist: Believer currently playing in movie houses. But Ayala Malls Cinemas is supercharging the frights with their Thrill Fest. From now until November 7, Ayala Malls Cinemas will be showing six horror movies in theaters around the country. And while the lineup includes modern thrill rides such as Target and the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s, it will also screen classics such as the 50th anniversary Extended Director’s Cut of The Exorcist.
VISIT HAUNTED ATTRACTIONS
Some might say been there done that, but we think haunted houses and other horror attractions still give that adrenaline rush that’s hard to replicate. Nightmares Manila will always have a special place in our hearts with its multiple courses, escape rooms, and demented characters that make it a favorite to visit every Halloween (or any month really). Also, they opened new attractions just in time for Halloween, House of Darkness, Freakshow, The Haunted Schoolhouse.
For something a bit different, Mystery Manila and Discovery Suites Manila are teaming up for Dark Discoveries, a Halloween Mystery Event open to the public that runs from October 25-31. Held at Discovery Suites, visitors can choose between two brand new escape rooms to try out, Rebecca’s Return or Sinister Spies. The former sees you and your friends be paranormal investigators who have forty minutes to banish Rebecca, a ghost haunting an abandoned hotel room. The former, meanwhile, has you recover top-secret files from an enemy spy before he returns in forty minutes.
And if you’re looking for that realistic experience, you can always book a walking tour of Intramuros at night and have a frighteningly fun time feeling the presence of the spirits of the walled city or visited reportedly haunted locations such as the Laperal White House in Baguio, which also so happens to be a restaurant.
