How Gen Z Can Shape The Future of OPM, According To These Young Stars

line
It's a bright future ahead.

A love for Filipino music is steadily growing, crossing oceans and reaching new heights. NYLON Manila asks Gen Z artists: how can people support OPM?

Original Pilipino Music, or OPM, has had a long, rich history. Spanning all kinds of genres and styles, influenced by everything from our cultural roots to global musicians, our local music scene is diverse and electric, spreading what could only be described as magic from small bars to global stages.

This new generation, in particular, has access to this diverse music, ways to listen to it, and ways to share their love for it. Additionally, more and more milestones are being hit by music from Filipino artists, from GENTO to ERE to Raining In Manila. International renown isn’t an ultimate goal because we want validation from people around the world, but because recognition of Filipino music on such a large scale is a beautiful thing to have and to witness. There’s no doubt that there’s nowhere to go but up for OPM, and leading the charge are the youth of today—making, discovering, re-discovering, and enjoying the music that thrums beneath our feet and is intrinsically entwined in our very being.

To celebrate OPM and bring Filipino music to new heights, Billboard Philippines hosted a launch party that welcomed guests from all corners of the music industry, from label executives to rising young Filipino musicians. On the blue carpet, we asked a roster of Gen Z artists how they think people can best support OPM in this day and age. Read on for the round-up of their answers, and head on over to our TikTok to listen to all of them!

THE TECHNOLOGY HELPS

@nylonmanila How can we support OPM? Here are the answers of #Vivoree, #Jayda, and #JanineTenoso ♬ original sound – NYLON Manila
@nylonmanila P-pop represent 🫡 Ofc, we also asked #G22, #BINI, and #BGYO ♬ original sound – NYLON Manila

One word: streaming. Vivoree, Juan Karlos, Arthur Miguel, BINI, G22 and more all agree—streaming is how we can support OPM, even though the money artists make from streaming is not the biggest, but that’s a conversation for another day. We don’t just listen to music on vinyls or CDs—there’s a whole new world of digital streaming and charts and music videos that enrich our experience of music and allow it to reach others.

Streaming is a given, of course, but how many of us partake in the celebration of Filipinos and their music going global without actually listening to the music? This isn’t a guilt-trip, just a reminder of a popular observation that many Filipinos still value music from all around the globe more highly than they do our own. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that, but it could largely be a case of simply not being exposed to the music that they’d enjoy as much as the music from the West, for example.

But now, with streaming and the Internet, it’s much easier for us to discover new music and patronize what’s ours. We can support OPM not just by listening to the music, as Iñigo Pascual says, but also “promoting it to other people.” Whenever he’s in America, the artist shares, he promotes his artist friends from the Philippines and feels proud when people are fans of his peers. Spreading the word, particularly on social media, is what we’re great at—why not maximize it to promote our local artists?

SHARING THE EXPERIENCE

@nylonmanila Here’s a reminder from #JuanKarlos, #InigoPascual, #KyleEcharri, and #JasonDhakal ♬ original sound – NYLON Manila

“By listening to OPM!” Juan Karlos says simply. “By sharing it. By going to gigs!” The ERE singer admits there’s nothing wrong with supporting international artists (he does himself), but he tries to keep a good balance of consuming music from all over. Support even those who are just starting out, Gelo of BGYO notes. Wherever someone comes from, if the music hits, why not stream and share and talk about it? You don’t need to start a fan account, but to continue the trajectory of OPM today, why not make use of our increased interconnectivity to spread the word about what you love?

Singer-songwriter James Reid also mentioned that going to live performances are one way to support the music. “I think that would also help a lot of the upcoming local artists [and] indie artists,” he says. Live music is a completely different experience from just blasting music in your room, and the Filipino gig scene is stellar, intimate, and quite unparalleled.

DON’T GATEKEEP

@nylonmanila Gen Z artists #UniqueSilonga, #AlexBruce, #ArthurMiguel, and #Kenaniah ♬ original sound – NYLON Manila

“Sa pamamagitan ng pagsh-share at hindi pag-ggatekeep,” Unique Salonga says, echoing Janine Teñoso. Often, there are people who turn their noses up at the “mainstreamification” of their favorite genre or artist (even internationally), but there’s truly nothing wrong with sharing a love for the music and the artist with others. Love isn’t limited, and neither is the music.

JUST LOVE THE MUSIC AUTHENTICALLY

@nylonmanila We attended the #BillboardPhilippines launch and asked artists like #NadineLustre, #JamesReid, and #DiaMate ♬ original sound – NYLON Manila

Jason Dhakal is right—we can’t really tell people what to do, can we? “Just enjoy the music,” he remarks. When you do find the music that you love—and you will—that’s 100% enough. One of the benefits of an increasingly more connected world is that the visibility of art and artists from all over the world is growing, and that’s because more people are able to discover new things and love them more openly.

“Just be open-minded and love all kinds of music,” Alex Bruce adds. Explore the styles and the genres, as Janine Berdin advises. Explore like you would with international artists, keep an open mind, and use all that technology to champion the standout that is Filipino music.

Your faves’ fave eyewear brand is now in the Philippines. Here’s what you need to know about Gentle Monster’s flagship store in BGC.

You’ve probably seen the teasers on social media, the star-studded launch party, or heard about Ahn Hyo-Seop’s recent visit to the country, but in case you didn’t know, Gentle Monster is finally in the Philippines with the official opening of their flagship Manila store in Shangri-La The Fort in BGC.

The groundbreaking global eyewear brand has made a name for itself as one of the top labels that all the it-girls and boys wear. Whether you’ve seen one of your fave idols wear their glasses or are just a fan of the brand, it now has become easier to cop a pair (or two). But before you head off to BGC, here are a few things you should know before visiting the Gentle Monster flagship store.

WHAT IS GENTLE MONSTER?

GENTLE MONSTER BGC STORE

If all this talk about Gentle Monster has got you swept up in the hype but aren’t even so sure what the brand is all about, we got you covered. Gentle Monster was founded by Hankook Kim in 2011 and is a luxury South Korean eyewear brand that focuses on making glasses that fit the Asian frame and facial features. Over the years, the brand has gained worldwide recognition for its unique and innovative storytelling when it comes to fashion. Operating on an unconventional philosophy, the brand eschews what is typical of an eyewear brand as it pushes the boundaries of creativity, both in its products and how its stores look. All of this to say, a pair of Gentle Monster shades will help you stand out from the crowd.

WHAT IS GENTLE MONSTER MANILA SELLING?

Inside the spacious Gentle Monster Manila store are over 200 pairs of shades and spectacles that are free for your perusal. Nearly every pair of glasses in the store is free to try with staff readily available to assist you. The glasses range from full-on sunglasses to tinted lenses of various colors and even optical glasses. They all come in a variety of shapes, colors, and designs, giving you a lot of options for the kind of shades that best fit you.

Also, dropping this November 2nd both online and in-store is the 2024 Optical Collection and their take on the high school experience, which they call GENTLE HIGH SCHOOL. The collection presents a new direction for optical frames, combining bold and sophisticated metal elements as well as tinted lenses of various shades.

ARE THERE SPECIAL COLLECTIONS?

GENTLE MONSTER

Yes, there are. Gentle Monster recently announced the exclusive restock of the Maison Margiela collection, available only in Manila on October 17th. The collection presents Gentle Monster’s original eyewear designs incorporating real threaded details of Maison Margiela’s stitch logo, embodying a marriage between two brands that champion uncompromised creativity and self-expression.

WHAT ARE THE PRICES?

GENTLE MONSTER BGC STORE

If you’re hoping to cop a pair of Gentle Monster glasses at their BGC store, it’s going to cost you. Prices vary depending on the style, design, and collection. But generally, a pair will set you back between 10-20 thousand pesos. And no, Gentle Monster does not do sales or promotions.

HOW DOES THE STORE LOOK LIKE?

GENTLE MONSTER BGC STORE

One of the main reasons why Gentle Monster has stood out from the crowd is that their retail stores are never the same. No space is alike, and that’s the case with their Shangri-La Manila Flagship. When you enter the store, you’ll be greeted with ‘The Giant’ sitting atop a destructed architectural reinterpretation of FREDERIK HEYMAN’s 3D artwork. The rest of the store is decorated with intricately placed art pieces in vertical and horizontal variations. No other Gentle Monster store looks like the one in BGC. Think of it as an art gallery meets eyewear store. It all makes for a truly one-of-a-kind retail experience.

ARE WALK-INS ALLOWED?

GENTLE MONSTER BGC STORE

Yes. There’s no need for you to pre-reserve a slot or go on a waitlist to enter the store. Feel free to walk into Gentle Monster’s BGC store during its store hours. However, the store only lets in a certain amount of people at a time so you might have to wait in a line on peak hours before you enter.

WHERE IS THE STORE AND WHEN IS IT OPEN?

GENTLE MONSTER BGC STORE

The Gentle Monster BGC store is located at 5th Ave, Taguig, 1634 Metro Manila. It is open between 11:00 AM-10:00 PM from Sunday to Thursday and 11:00 AM-11:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Learning To Fly Higher: 7 Lessons From Haikyu! That Made Me Become A Better Person

line
Even more reasons to love this show.

Never knew a sports anime could change my life like this, considering I might just be the most uncoordinated person ever to live.

Related: 12 Anime Series That Got A Good (And Bad) Live-Action Adaptation

Finding Haikyu! during one of the lowest moments of my life felt like sunshine on my skin after long days of storm. Despite not knowing a single thing about volleyball, I was able to celebrate and cry with the teams’ wins and losses. I definitely came out wiser after going through screens and manga panels of this shōnen sports anime series.

Here are 7 lessons from Haikyu! that have molded me into becoming a better person:

Dancing With The Geniuses

Is it game over once we come across naturals in fields we have spent an absurd amount of time getting better in?

A recurring theme within the series was how there was a definite distinction between volleyball prodigies and “mere mortals.” This was observed in the feud between the characters Oikawa, captain of Aoba Johsai, and Kageyama, setter for Karasuno. Oikawa constantly beats himself up for not being able to catch up with Kageyama’s progress, who is a natural talent.

Mediocrity is just day one—and there are tons of tomorrows to try and try. Being a mechanical genius isn’t the only way to be “good” at anything. Just because you are not immediately as good as the others doesn’t mean you are bound to fail.

The Hatching Baby Crow

Hinata, the main character of the series, is the epitome of tenacity and perseverance. Despite his disadvantageous physique, he does not let this get in the way of his dream of becoming the next “Little Giant.”

After winning against Shiratorizawa, Hinata pushed boundaries by becoming a ball boy. Despite being put into such a position even after advancing to the Nationals, Hinata saw this opportunity for growth. He could watch the court from a different perspective, allowing him to execute high-level receives during the latter part of the series.

No matter what circumstance life decided to put him in, he could still brave through it. From a little baby bird to a towering crow, Hinata proves that hard work never betrays.

Dealing With Mediocrity

The show is filled with geniuses and prodigies who are just *too* passionate about volleyball. Another setter who was deemed inferior to Kageyama was his own senior, Sugawara. Before Kageyama’s arrival, Sugawara was Karasuno’s official setter.

The series teaches us how to deal with mediocrity and being “overshadowed” by naturals in the same field. And the thing is, it’s okay! Still pursuing standing in the same stage with the gifted people is a strength in itself.

Having strong people around you does that necessarily mean that you are weak, and this is what Sugawara’s character teaches us. With his teammates’ top-notch abilities, Karasuno can play more games, giving him more opportunities to stand on the court. It was not just his fight, but the whole of Karasuno.

Six Who Are Strong Together

Haikyu! has put immense importance on themes of teamwork and using numbers to advantage. During the Tokyo Training Arc, Karasuno devised an attacking format called “Synchronized Attack,” wherein several spikers, along with the receivers, all charge in for an attack, confusing the opponent’s blockers.

This arrangement was significantly observed during Karasuno’s game against Shiratorizawa, a school with exceptional individuals. This strategy by Karasuno has become an integral way for them to score against big individuals like Ushijima, the captain of the opposing team.

Individually, the team members could be deemed “less than” their opponents. But by incorporating attacks that involve the whole team, they can stay on par with far more polished opponents.

Let’s Take It Easy

Speed is a curse. Though it is cool and flashy, it has a knack for narrowing out the vision, making you lose your breath, and pulling you down completely. The constant rush to be able to do things right away is what makes us stray further and further away from the goal.

During Hinata’s ball boy arc, he was able to teach Hyakazawa, a volleyball newbie, a valuable skill in volleyball that many tend to ignore: Taking it easy. Hinata’s advice to Hyakuzawa to pass the ball in a high and relaxed manner is what made their team win. Mundane moments like this make us realize that some things can only be fully attained if we take it easy.

The Losers And The Winners

One excruciating thing about the series is the inevitability of losing. But thanks to this, we are shown a healthy way of dealing with losing. Haikyu! has an incredible ability to make you root for all the teams. This makes the losses more painful and conflicting for the audience. But with this, we can pick up a thing or two about loss and revival.

One of the most soul-crushing defeats Karasuno had to face was when they lost while using what seemed to be an “invincible attack.” Due to this, Hinata and Kageyama could redesign the said attack, making it an integral part of their win against Aoba Johsai the next time they faced them in a game. This loss teaches us that after every fall, the only way is back up.

Eating And Growing

Grind culture was valued all throughout the series, the same time as resting and eating well. After losing an important game against Aoba Johsai, Karasuno had no choice but to retreat and try again. But before doing that, Coach Ukai bought them muscle-repairing food.

A hearty meal after defeat was what the members needed during that time. It was a touching moment of realization that in order to grow, one must learn to take care of themselves as well. Haikyu! has had such an incredible impact on my life, not only in terms of entertainment but also in self-development.

For those who haven’t watched the series, there is still time to catch up as the next installment is a Haikyu! movie featuring the highly anticipated trashcan battle between Karasuno and Nekoma to be released on February 16, 2024! We’ll be seeing you on the sidelines!

What Is A Girl’s Girl And How Can You Be One?

line
We're all in this together.

Being a “girl’s girl” at its core means you uplift, support, and stand up for women in a society where they’re often disadvantaged, whether they’re your friends or a stranger.

Related: 7 Times Filipina Stars Have Had It And Stood Up For Themselves And For All Women

In this toxic world of petty jealousy and competition, it’s important to value female connections and understand how women can make each others’ lives just a little better. Just look at how Taylor Swift stuck by Sophie Turner amidst all the issues surrounding her divorce from Joe Jonas, or how Beyoncé and Taylor stuck by each other when the former showed up to Taylor’s Eras Tour film premiere. We pit women against each other over and over and over, and society sets us up to function with an ingrained sense of dislike towards other women—but enough of that!

The concept of being a “girl’s girl” could mean a few things. It could mean that you’re the antithesis of being a “pick me girl” or the opposite of someone who prides themselves on being “not like other girls.” It could mean simply being truthful to your female friends when someone wronged them or holding them accountable when they do something wrong. Regardless, it’s about being there for the girls in your life and valuing solidarity in womanhood.

@lilmikara what other rules would you add? #forthegirls #girlsgirl #beagirlsgirl ♬ original sound – Mikara

Of course, we can’t chalk up feminism, equality, empowerment and the complexities of womanhood to only what could be perceived as silly concepts like “girls’ girl.” However, with its spreading popularity as a term and the need for us girls to stick together, it may prove beneficial for us to unlearn some of the habits we’ve been conditioned to have and stick by a community that all throughout history has been given the short end of the stick.

CELEBRATION, NOT JEALOUSY

It’s so easy to fall into the trap of perceiving other women as a threat. Or to think that they’re superior or inferior to you. A quote from the Barbie movie encapsulates it all: “Everyone hates women. Men hate women and women hate women. It’s the one thing we can agree on.” The thing is—it doesn’t have to be like that! There’s space for all of us to excel and be successful in life, and to be happy doing the things we love to do. So, celebrate women’s achievements and be a good friend. What needs of ours are truly fulfilled when we tear someone else down?

STAY LOYAL

I once had a guy friend badmouth a girl I knew straight to my face, and while I could understand where he was coming from in the context of our conversation, I was immediately put off because he was willing to talk like that about a girl just because he didn’t get what he wanted from her (also, he was in the wrong for sure). One of the most basic tenets of being a girl’s girl is staying loyal to your girl friends, especially when it seems like something sketchy is going on in their relationships. Even stars like Kathryn Bernardo and Kaori Oinuma know the value of staying loyal to the girls in your life. Only we understand each other in this chaotic world.

BE CRITICAL

Being a girl’s girl doesn’t mean you support all women unconditionally. Of course, anyone can be a bad person or make mistakes, but in this society where women are often made out to be the villain and disadvantaged simply because they’re women, it’s important to see how power is distributed and how systems in place work (spoiler: unequally, with women at the margins). Remember the Try Guys Ned Fulmer and Alexandria Herring cheating issue? Alexandria herself may not have been a girl’s girl, but Try Guy Eugene Lee Yang was correct in saying that the Internet (and society) has a tendency to be harsher towards women.

So, be critical, always. Make an effort to find the truth in all situations, watch out for people who constantly blame or badmouth other women, and come from a critical standpoint whenever you’re assessing circumstances.

SHARE WHAT YOU KNOW

“Sharing what you know” ranges from telling a stranger she has a stain on her dress, or calling up your friend to tell her her boyfriend’s been flirting with some girl. It could include sharing self-defense tips, warning them of someone’s red flags, or telling them about simple life hacks that makes lives easier, among others. To share what you know in order to make a girl aware of what they need to be aware of, from mundane faux pas to serious issues, is part of the Girl Code.

STAND UP FOR OTHER WOMEN & VALUE COMMUNITY

I’ve also witnessed girls join their male friends as they make misogynistic “jokes” or laugh at other girls. Why are some people so willing to disrespect other women thinking that they might earn more respect that way? Defend your girl friends whenever you can and stand up for women everywhere. A community of girl’s girls built on shared experiences, utmost respect, and solidarity is one that will help all its members live better lives. It can become a safe, supportive space that could help us feel less alone, less unsure, and less afraid of navigating the challenges and injustices that girls and women all over the world face.

Congratulations, you’re almost past those sleepless nights and spreadsheets as a marketing major, or maybe you’re considering the college program. Regardless, we’re welcoming you to the real world with endless career choices and opportunities. No pressure, but what’s next after graduation? As you contemplate becoming a PR person, brand manager, or advertising specialist, the transition from being a marketing major to a marketing professional can be both exciting and challenging.

To help you slay this pivotal phase of your career, we’re checking in with a 21-year-old marketing agency founder for who’s been through all that. She’s got the lowdown on the ever-changing marketing game through her unique Gen Z perspective. Get to know Micaella Mamanta of The Mika Media and her words of wisdom to the new generation of marketing majors.

The Mika Media

Introduce yourself.

My name is Micaella Mamanta, but my colleagues used to call me ‘Meka’ or ‘Mes Meka.’ To be honest, I don’t know how it started or the origin behind it, but the ‘ClubMika’ of influencers under Mika Media began to call me by that nickname. I’m 21 years old, born and raised in Calasiao, Pangasinan. Growing up, I knew that business is something I wanted to pursue, which is why I chose a business course.

What was your program in college, and how did it contribute to your current success?

I pursued a Bachelor of Science majoring in Human Resources Management. This course has been incredibly beneficial in my current role, particularly in my small business. It taught me essential skills, such as effective communication with team members and clients, as well as a deep understanding of labor rights.

What career choices are available for those considering marketing as their college program?

For all you marketing majors out there, the world’s your oyster, seriously! There’s a boatload of career options waiting for you to dive into, and they’re not just your regular 9-to-5 opportunities. Some of the diverse paths you can explore include brand management, content marketing, digital marketing, e-commerce management, entrepreneurship, event planning, market research analysis, marketing management, product management, public relations, sales, and social media management. Each of these brings its own bag of challenges and chances to shine, making marketing the place to be for passionate and forward-thinking people.

For those still in school, what are your tips for surviving your college program?

I guess it starts with enjoying every single day of being a student. As a working student, I’ve come to realize what my cousin once told me: being a student is a lot better than facing the realities of life after graduation. It’s about finding your path, building your future, and mastering time management. Surrounding yourself with people who share your goals and radiate positive mantras is crucial. With these elements in place, you’re bound to not only survive but thrive during your college journey.

What about you? What are your plans after college graduation?

My plan after graduation is to continue running my small marketing agency while pursuing further studies in marketing. Learning never stops after graduation, and acquiring a strong knowledge base will be instrumental in achieving my future goals.

Tell us all about your journey into marketing and The Mika Media.

In my two-and-a-half years on my marketing journey, I’ve learned a great deal. I’ve also learned to be teachable. Nothing motivates me more than seeing their growth over the years. Every brand we’ve worked with holds a special place in our hearts.

Now, with The Mika Media, I’m all about ‘The Art and Science of Marketing: Where Creativity Meets Conversion.’ I share tips on how to create viral videos for social media platforms, craft PR packages for beauty brands, all while specializing in influencer marketing.

Why do you believe influencer marketing is important today?

I think that influencer marketing has become increasingly important due to its ability to help brands reach their target audience effectively, build trust, and create authentic connections. These known influencers can help businesses expand their reach, boost brand awareness, and drive sales through their authentic and engaging content, often resonating better with specific consumer segments compared to traditional advertising methods. Moreover, in the digital age, where consumers are bombarded with advertisements, influencer marketing offers a more genuine and relatable approach, making it a crucial component of modern marketing strategies.

With your college program and skills, what can you bring to the marketing industry?

With my degree in Human Resources and the skills I’ve developed, I believe I can contribute significantly to the industry by understanding people’s needs and promoting solutions to their problems.

What’s your message to anyone aspiring to become part of the industry?

Keep trying and always show up. Don’t let anyone dull your sparkle, even if the road to a bright future is tough. NEVER STOP. Through grit and grace, always remember this beautiful verse: ‘God is within her; she will not fall.’ You’ll surely get there.

What started from YouTube covers, Arthur Miguel has paved the music scene with wonder tracks like Leron and Pasahili. With the help of his label Warner Music Philippines, the 23-year-old artist has amassed an impressive following of over 1.8 million subscribers on YouTube, and his Spotify tracks have resonated with a remarkable audience of 3.5 million monthly listeners.

That said, we can only imagine how Arthur Miguel handles his new-found fame. While some artists wear a carefully constructed persona, this rising star isn’t afraid to share his truest self. With the release of new single Lihim, let’s dive deep into the secrets of this chart-topping artist.

The Extroverted Introvert

Whether you’re an actor, all-around performer, or content creator, it’s expected that the entertainment industry is filled with extroverts. Well, that’s not the case for Arthur Miguel, who is a self-proclaimed introvert behind the scenes. The 23-year old thrives in the solitude of his creative space, finding inspiration in the quiet moments of introspection. This introverted nature serves as a surprising contrast to his electrifying stage presence, and it’s an integral part of his artistic journey.

When asked about how he’s going around shows, press conferences, and gigs, he answers “As an introvert, ang hirap pero dahil artist ka kailangan. Gaya nalang siguro ng sinasabi nila ‘practice makes perfect.’ Habang tumatagal, kaya ko na pero may time talaga na sagad ‘yung social battery ko.

The True Story Behind His Bold Buzz Cut

While Arthur Miguel is known for his music, he’s also recognized for his bold buzz cut. Plus, his consistent choice to serve those wild colors? It’s totally iconic and hands down one of the standout moments in his career. Interestingly, it might surprise you to know that it was accidental and not his first choice.

“Hindi naman ako kalbo dati, dumating lang sa point na sa sobrang bleach— like, ako lang gumagawa ng hair ko— nalalagas na siya. Kaya naman naging pink, I tried black but hindi siya Arthur Miguel,” he says.

Stanning Ms. Swift

Speaking of buzz cuts and bleached hair, it’s no secret that Arthur Miguel is a Swiftie. In numerous interviews and press conferences, he proudly wears his love for Ms. Swift on his sleeves and shares how the icon influences the way he crafts stories through his lyrics. With tracks like Lihim and Pasahili, the impact of Taylor is undeniably present in his songwriting, often capturing the essence of raw emotions and personal experiences.

The secret? Arthur Miguel has tickets to the Eras Tour, and he’s super stoked. And if you’re wondering what his favorite Taylor Swift song, it’s Mirrorball, which totally vibes with his personality.

Thinking Too Much…

Beneath the glitz and glamour of the stage, this rising star openly admits to being an overthinker. While many artists thrive in the spotlight, he frequently finds himself lost in his thoughts, carefully contemplating every detail and angle. It’s this meticulous approach to his creative process that imbues his work with a deeply personal touch. Arthur Miguel doesn’t just create music; he pours his heart and soul into it, analyzing every note and melody down to the very last lyric.

All About 3AM Hits, Literally

Have you ever wondered about the creative process behind his chart-topping hits? When we’re singing along to the loneliest songs at 3 AM, Arthur Miguel is also up at those hours writing his tracks. The stillness of midnight hours provides the ideal backdrop for him to pour his personal experiences and emotions into his songs, resulting in the deeply moving and relatable details that have captured the hearts of his fans.

What Went Down At K-Magic Live! With K-Pop Icons Hyoyeon, Yugyeom, and Taemin

line
Three icons maximizing their joint slay.

Solo artists HYO, Yugyeom, and Taemin headlined a night of music, epic performances, and dream-come-true experiences at K-Magic Live in Manila.

Related: Highlights From TWICE’s Two-Day Bulacan Concert That Made The Four-Year Wait So Worth It

My first time at the barricade at a concert headlined by multiple artists made me learn three things: one, artists really are as talented in real life as they are on screen. Two, the musical experience really is amplified by fans and people who share the same love for music and the artists. Three, one should always be prepared to get splashed with water when in the pit.

I already knew of Hyoyeon, Yugyeom, and Taemin’s artistic prowess (they are icons, after all), but seeing them live altogether was an incredible experience as different styles, genres, and even generations were showcased for one whole evening, given that Hyoyeon and Taemin are 2nd generation idols and Yugyeom is from the 3rd.

Organized by OctoArts Entertainment and directed by John Prats, K-Magic Live! was a whole lot of music and a whole lot of fun. Denise Laurel as the host brought the energy to the stage as she interviewed the artists between songs and hyped up every fandom present. Hyoyeon, Yugyeom, and Taemin maximized their joint slay as they performed a medley of their hit songs, made their fans’ wishes come true, and gained new fans along the way. Here are some moments that you may have missed or may want to relive!

FANDOM UNITY

Unlike on X, if you put a bunch of different K-pop stans in a concert venue, best believe they’ll be screaming and supportive of everyone—even if they’re not a fan. I even overheard plenty of people who praised artists they weren’t a fan of. So many people definitely became a fan of one artist or another after K-Magic! Seeing artists who have hundreds of performances under their belt live is just such a grand experience that can bring people together, no matter what fandom colors they’re wearing or what lightstick they’re carrying.

Alongside a sea of different-colored lightsticks and clothing, fandom unity was shown through fan projects, color-coded and personalized banners for each artist given to all attendees, and freebies! The crowd went wild for every artist, earning thanks and praise from each of them.

GOT WHAT WE DESERVED WITH HYO

HYO, or Hyoyeon, soloist, DJ, and member of K-pop girl group Girls’ Generation, opened the night with an amazing performance of Picture, followed by Deep, Second, and Dessert. Skilled, fierce, and clearly having fun on stage, Hyoyeon absolutely bodied each song and was incredibly sweet to the crowd. So when she said to jump, best believe we all did.

SURPRISE WATER SHOW WITH YUGYEOM

Soloist and GOT7 member Yugyeom was all smooth vocals and smooth moves as he performed several of his solo tracks back-to-back, including All About U, I Want U Around, Ponytail, Love The Way, and more. The artist remarked about the Manila heat, joking that it caused him to have a runny nose and leading to him taking off his jacket (to the screams of many a fan) and getting water poured on him. Yugyeom also continued the GOT7 tradition of throwing water at the crowd while performing GOT7 hit Hard Carry, which I personally completely forgot about until I was splashed. But that’s a tick on the bucket list!

TAEMIN, THE IDOL OF IDOLS, PROVING HE EARNED THAT TITLE

Delivering a showstopping performance and stunning vocals, solo artist and SHINee member Taemin brought the house down with Move, Criminal, Idea, Advice and the gorgeous ballad Hypnosis. Most of the crowd were Shawols, so the screams were absolutely deafening. People even ran all over the pit as they followed the artist from the main stage to the extended stage to catch a better view. And even Yugyeom, halfway through the set, praised the idol of idols.

The anticipation was well-rewarded as the singer and dancer effortlessly moved through a setlist that showcased his vocal and performance skill, honed since he was 14 and still the baby-faced maknae of SHINee. Taemin promised to come back soon with new music and new live shows, and clearly no one’s going to be able to wait.

These Filipino Swifties Had The Time Of Their Lives Watching The Eras Tour Film

line
Turning movie houses into mini-concerts.

Pinoy Swifties got the memo when Taylor Swift said to treat The Eras Tour Film like it was another stop of the tour.

Swiftie mania has swept the world once more this weekend, and it’s not just because of her surprise appearance on SNL. Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Film finally landed in theaters for the first weekend of its limited run as Swifties around the world made their way to cinemas to see the cultural event. And that was the case for Filipino Swifties, many of whom are probably watching the movie to make up for the fact that Taylor isn’t bringing the tour to the Philippines.

Cinemas around the country were packed as Filipino fans sang and danced to their heart’s content and proved once again just how passionate Filo Swifties are. We scoured the internet to find our favorite moments and reactions that Filipino crowds had to the nearly three-hour concert film. Check them out below.

THE CRUEL SUMMER BRIDGE

We love how it was only the second song of the concert yet this crowd at a screening at SM North EDSA were already giving it their all, purple lightsticks included. There’s just something so special about seeing a room full of Filipino Swifties scream the lyrics to Cruel Summer

SYDNEY MEGAMALL

No Philippines? No problem. These Filipino Swifties referenced the iconic “Sydney” chant during Blank Space and replaced the Australian city with Megamall. It was giving the best kind of Pinoy humor.

CINEMA? MORE LIKE A CONCERT

@joemyrevilla Replying to @IE parang asa LIVE SHOW LANG 😭 ❤️ #fyp #erastour #taylorswift ♬ original sound – JoemyMark Revilla

While some debate whether to watch The Eras Tour film in regular cinemas or spend extra to watch it on a bigger and better screen, we think what makes or breaks a viewing is the crowd you’re watching it with. Why have a dry crowd that doesn’t sing the lyrics when you can have passionate Swifties who aren’t afraid to have fun and get into the spirit? Even Taylor Swift herself got her whole life while watching the movie. This screening turned the cinema into a concert that we wanted to be in.

SPECIAL PERFORMANCE FROM TAYLOR SHEESH

Imagine watching The Eras Tour film and also having a performance by Taylor Sheesh. That’s the treat the crowd at Swifties Philippines’ premiere night block screening at Ayala Malls Manila Bay got when Taylor Sheesh made her way to the front to perform Love Story. Being a Filipino Swiftie really is a different kind of experience.

The dedication for Filipino Swifties to show up to the cinema dressed in their Taylor-inspired fits is commendable. There’s nothing like cosplaying as Taylor Swift to watch her concert movie. Bonus points if you can guess the reference of these ghostly Swifties.

They went for loud and edgy.

These ‘Rock Chic’ ensembles at the Billboard Philippines Launch deserve a billboard of their own.

The Billboard Philippines Launch was nothing short of a rockstar affair, with singers, emerging artists, and major names in the entertainment industry coming together to witness history in the making. The main event celebrated the country’s music scene with a ‘Rockstar Chic’ theme that set the tone for an evening of true talent and style, underlining the Philippines’ undeniable influence on the music stage.

Now that we’ve come, seen, and danced the night away, it’s time to declare the best-dressed personalities on the blue carpet at the Billboard Philippines Launch. Nobody disappointed, but these celebrities served rockstar realness.

BINI

A quarter of the girl group BINI made quite the entrance with their picture-perfect attire for the evening. Styled by Ica Villanueva, Mikah and Aiah captivated the crowd as they strutted down the blue carpet, with each ensemble making a unique statement while maintaining a cohesive sense of unity. Mikah commanded attention in a sleek, all-black outfit that showcased her edgy yet elegant persona. In contrast, Aiah embraced a complementary palette of white and red.

G22

G22 doesn’t simply speak through P-Pop but also through their personal style. When asked about their look last night, members of the girl group described it as ‘very avant-garde and very G22. We agree because those all-black and color-coordinating sets deserve their own spotlight.

SB19

As SB19 made their grand entrance, the collective presence of these stars spoke volumes about their evolving image in the Philippines’ entertainment industry, leaving attendees and fans eagerly awaiting their next moves in the music scene. After becoming Billboard Philippines’ Maiden Issue cover stars, who knows what they’ll achieve next?

As if that isn’t enough, in a world where music and fashion collide, the Kings of P-Pop proved that they are not only masters of their craft but also influential icons who are shaping the future of men’s fashion. They totally brought their A-game to the event, showcasing the dashing dark blue and black ensembles.

BGYO

We all know that BGYO has mastered performing and traveling in style, but Gelo and Nate’s bold blue carpet affair wouldn’t be left behind. Rocking mixed textures, prints, and accessories, they captured the essence of the night. Their ability to seamlessly blend various elements of fashion, from fabrics to patterns, showcased their knack for pushing the boundaries and redefining style. This fearless approach to fashion continues to be a source of inspiration for fans and fashion enthusiasts alike.

Ena Mori

Ena Mori, an emerging talent, offered a fresh perspective to the event. Her experimental and all-denim style revealed her willingness to push the boundaries and explore new avenues in fashion, just as she does in her music career. It’s no wonder why she won best-dressed last night.

Zild Benitez

Another awardee for best-dressed, Zild Benitez made a strong statement that was as powerful as his artistry. Wearing an-all black jersey matched with sunglasses and a choker, he’s serving rockstar realness with that fierce face and personality.

Nadine Lustre

Nadine Lustre, known for her personal style and aesthetic, was nothing short of lustrous last night. The actress killed it with a red, RAFA WORLDWIDE leather skirt and a black bodice off-shoulder. If Amy Winehouse and Christina Aguilera’s style had a baby, it would look like this rockstar affair.

Jayda

While we’re thinking of leather jackets and fringes for the event, Jayda took it to the next level with a red gown, gracing the blue carpet with elegance and a contemporary edge. While it was a departure from the expected all-black affair, it served as a refreshing reminder that fashion is a canvas for self-expression. Who knew that the fusion of elegance and rockstar flair could be equally show stopping as edgy ensembles?

Inigo Pascual

Inigo Pascual made a splash with a sophisticated all-white ‘fit. The actor and singer-songwriter’s tailored suit, accompanied by subtle accessories, exuded elegance and charisma. Needless to say, Inigo demonstrated the power of classic style with a modern twist, symbolizing a fusion of sophistication and youthfulness.

Regine Velasquez – Alcacid

A true icon in the Philippine music industry, Regine Velasquez displayed her timeless grace through this maximalist gem—think fur sleeves, mismatched patterns, and a statement necklace. With this bold fashion choice, Asia’s Songbird not only reaffirmed her status as a music legend but also showcased her flair for pushing the boundaries of style and making a lasting impression in the world of fashion.
