JUJUTSU KAISEN 0

When the Jujutsu Kaisen anime series first landed in late 2020, it impressed a lot of people thanks to its intriguing dark fantasy world, memorable characters, and comedic moments. Fans have since been clamoring for a season two for the supernatural series. While no official announcement has been given, we are getting a movie. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will serve as a prequel to the whole series. It will follow a new protagonist named Yuji Itadori.

Yuji is cursed and haunted by his childhood friend Rika. This then catches the attention of blindfolded teacher Saturo Gojo who enrolls him at first-year Jujutsu High. There, he learns to control his curse. Characters featured in the series are set to make cameos and appearances, though it will be their much younger selves. Produced by MAPPA, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is set for a release date of December 24 in Japanese cinemas.

CHAINSAW MAN

Chainsaw Man went from relative obscurity to being one of the best-selling and most popular manga out right now. The manga follows Denji who lives a difficult life under the Yakuza. One day merges with his chainsaw dog and goes to work for the Public Safety Division. Chainsaw Man has made a name for itself as one of the craziest, bloodiest, goriest, and most hardcore manga in recent memory. And we are finally getting an anime adaptation.

MAPPA finds themselves on this list again as they are in charge of adapting this one-of-a-kind series. From the trailer alone, the animation looks stunning and we have a feeling we are in for a wild ride. No official release date has been given. Though it has been suggested that the series will release sometime between late 2021 to early 2022.

ATTACK ON TITAN: THE FINAL SEASON PART 2

Few modern anime have penetrated pop culture like Attack on Titan has. Even for people who rarely watch anime, they have at least heard about Attack on Titan. And with the anime series coming to an end, all eyes are on how MAPPA decides to end the series. Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2 will serve as the swan song for the series. As such, it has fans curious as to how the journey will end for Erin and the rest. Part 2 is coming on January 9, 2022.

DRAGON BALL SUPER: SUPER HERO

Weird title aside, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero has gotten us excited by the mere fact that it’s a new movie from the Dragon Ball universe. Serving as the second Dragon Ball Super movie after 2018’s Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Super Hero doesn’t have a lot of information about it aside from some released art and concept designs. Whatever they decide to do with the movie, we can’t wait to see where they go with it and hope it delivers. The movie is set to arrive sometime in 2022.

Valley Is Here To Give You The Upbeat Alt-Pop Bops You Need Right Now

line
Get to know this rising alt-pop band.

Alt-pop band Valley may have initially met by accident, but their uplifting sound and happy music make it feel like they were always meant to be together.

Related: Yung Bae Is Bringing Future Funk Into The Mainstream

They say that when you meet the person that’s meant for you, it’s destiny and not just a chance encounter. For Toronto-based band Valley, it’s safe to say that this notion applies to them, given just how good their music is. Comprised of Rob Laska, Karah James, Mickey Brandolino, and Alex DiMauro, the group was initially in two different bands, with Karah and Mickey being a duo and Alex and Rob being in another. In 2014, a sound engineer by the name of Steve Kirstein accidentally booked both groups at the same time for the studio. One thing led to another, and their chance encounter led them to combine to form the rising alternative-pop band that is Valley.

Ever since then, the group has been on a steady ascent in popularity with their catalog of mood booster songs. Releasing bop after bop like the upbeat Tempo, the addicting and viral Like 1999, the introspective Society, and their latest release Oh shit…are we in love, their very first love song, Valley has been mesmerizing more and more listeners as the years go by. Along the way, they have also released the EP This Room Is White (2016), the full-length debut MAYBE (2019), and their last EP, sucks to see you doing better (2020).

Their acclaim and attention have even landed the band a 2020 JUNO Award nomination for “Breakthrough Group of the Year” and featured as Apple Music’s Up Next artist for Canada in September. Now the group is set to release their latest EP, Last Birthday, on October 1 and go on tour as well in the US and Canada. Ahead of Valley’s upcoming EP release, NYLON Manila talked with the alt-pop group to discuss their new music, their style, and what their music-making process is like.

VALLEY’S SOUND, AS DESCRIBED BY THE BAND

If you haven’t heard of who Valley is before, the group makes alt-pop songs that can be both up-tempo and groovy to more acoustic-driven tracks. For the band though, they would describe their style and sound as “fizzy, nostalgic, pop music.” As they explain, “It’s often music about the past. Not always, but we like to do that. And it’s just got that summery sweet nostalgic fizz. It’s like a sour candy that turns sweet.” The band adds that they also like to incorporate elements of both the past and future into their sounds, to make it something that either sounds fresh or classic. “We always want to either be fresh or totally classic. So, it’s a blend in the past and the future.”

For a band that initially met each other by accident and were part of different groups, their style blends exceptionally well. While their initial formation could have led to possible tension, they say that their sound came naturally to them. “We’ve developed a lot as a band. We’ve been doing it for about seven years now. And yeah, it’s there’s never one day where we decided we’re gonna sound like this or like, like a or b, or whatever. At the end of the day, you know, seven years later, we finally have like a sound that’s very much our own. It was always just kind of picking up things along the way. And I think we’ll do that forever. We’re just going to pick up new things constantly, kind of revolve around our sound, but it always kind of feels like us, which is important.”

MUSICAL INSPIRATIONS

Given how Valley likes to pull from different genres and sounds and make it their own, it’s no surprise then that the group has a varied list of musical inspirations. On one end, they say that Fleetwood Mac has been a big source of musical inspiration for them. On the other, they also say Mowtown, Clairo, John Mayer, Kacey Musgraves, and a bevy of pop artists like One Direction, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, and Coldplay have inspired their sound in one way or another.

MUSIC-MAKING PROCESS

Whenever you listen to a Valley track, you can tell that the band really gave their song the love and attention they deserve. Not saying that other artists don’t do this, but there is a sense of personal care that you feel in each song. According to the group, when it comes to making their music, the process is never the same. “There’s some constants like I think the one constant is that we will mostly just bring like a fully finished song to the band. It starts from like one little spark that turns into a chorus that turns into a verse that turns into a bridge and you know, we’re always experimenting new ways that can like excite us in the writing stages.”

So, how then does Valley know whether or not they have a good lyric on their hands? For them, it all has to do with the feeling. “It depends on whether it just feels right or it doesn’t. And then you also pick up tips along the way from other writers and other songs you listen to analyzing like why something you know made you feel so strongly and then you go Oh, it’s because it was you know, it had a double meaning to it and it was a play on words or whatever. But you kind of pick up all those little things along the way and then eventually it really just comes down to taste and what you think is good and what you think is bad.”

At the end of the day, the band says that it all comes down to the listener to decide whether or not they can relate to the song as they can only guess to a certain extent whether the lyric is good or not. But given how more and more people are listening to Valley as the months go by, they seem to be winning in that department.

Valley’s seven-track EP, Last Birthday, comes out this October 1. To see the full list of Valley’s tour dates as well as to buy tickets, check out their website.

While Amazon’s Cinderella Is Not Perfect, It Makes Up For It In Its Modern Depiction Of Gender Equality

line
A flawed film with a forward-thinking depiction of gender.

Amazon’s Cinderella is far from a perfect movie, but it definitely gets bonus points for being the most modern thinking Cinderella remake so far.

Related: Blood Red Sky Is Snakes On A Plane Meets Vampires, And It Works Surprisingly Well

Going into Cinderella, I just wanted to watch another movie musical. Little did I know that it would be the most refreshing remake of this story that I have watched so far. Rather than function as gimmicks, the changes in this adaptation serve a purpose: to address societal issues while giving modern answers; empowering both everyone to be themselves. Through watching the film, I felt quite a lot of emotional baggage unpacked—which is exactly what movies are for. So, let’s get into it. [WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD]

While the most important change is giving the titular heroine her own dreams outside of love, as well as choosing herself over the prince; I love how the movie explored the other characters, too. For one, the prince is not a nameless one-dimensional archetype of either “perfect guy” or “smug prince.” They gave him a backstory and for once, delved into how he felt about the pressures of marriage and ruling the kingdom. Even Cinderella’s stepmother, Prince Robert’s family, and several supporting characters have their chance to grow and shine.

In particular, the movie does a good balance of showing people’s lived experiences (such as discrimination, societal pressure, and more) while offering realistic ways to solve them. Let’s go by character.

CINDERELLA

Cinderella (2021) - Plugged In

Some may feel annoyed by the prospect of girl-bossifying Cinderella or perhaps give Ella a “not like other girls” syndrome. Instead, the film pleasantly surprises by showing that all forms of womanhood are valid: girls with dreams and girls who want love are celebrated in equal measure because Ella is both! Her character is hardworking and driven, but also sweet and caring. She runs towards her business goals as she should by day and dances with the prince at night.

The discrimination that Ella faces is a very real representation of the glass ceiling, as society always has opinions on what women should and should not do. The stepmother and townspeople shame Ella for her desire to run a business, much like how women are told they should do women’s work instead. Even in today’s “modern times,” career women face shame for putting their own goals first over marrying young and having a family.

Watching this film in 2021 exposes how absurd sexism is. It’s such a head-scratcher to me why a woman cannot run a dress shop when women are the ones who wear dresses. A townsman even tells Ella that no one will buy anything from her. Why is it that women are discouraged from opportunities just because of their gender? In some countries, girls cannot even receive formal schooling and women cannot work. Her song, I Want, channels this feeling well, talking about how it feels like a “Million to One” chance and a “shot in the dark” to succeed as a woman in a male-dominated field.

Is Ella a feminist character? Yes, even in her time period. She represents women in under-represented fields and opens the door for other girls to open shops as well! Being a maker of dresses, she supports other women by making garments for them to wear. She even teaches her stepsisters about self-acceptance. In a time where appearance was everything for young women of marriageable age, Ella tells one of her stepsisters, “It doesn’t matter what I think or what anyone else thinks, but how you feel when you look at yourself in the mirror.”

OTHER PRIORITIES

Cinderella' Review - This Girlboss Fairytale Doesn't Quite Make the Cut

This is the first Cinderella remake where her endgame is not with the guy at the end. And it feels a touch more modern than some Cinderella stories set in the 21st Century. It’s also a welcome change that she rejects Prince Robert to choose herself and her dreams even though she likes him. Even better, she and the prince do not get married at the end of the film. After all, they just met, so Disney logic doesn’t apply here. Instead of a wedding, her happy ending is the realization of her dreams and self-acceptance—with a supportive boyfriend to boot.

She even forgives her cruel stepmother when she didn’t have to. After her stepmother shared her story, Ella empathized with her struggles and realized that Vivian was a product of her time. All the women even get a song to express their frustration after the daily discrimination they feel (such as the King telling Queen Beatrice that no one asked for her opinion, or Cinderella being mocked for wanting to open a business by the townspeople and her own stepmother). Even the townswomen and palace handmaidens got to rock out in the number because every woman has experienced gender-based discrimination, as well as losing opportunities because they do not have male privilege.

Camila Cabello’s Ella is definitely a heroine, not just by being good and kind, but by taking action on her dreams, inspiring others, showing forgiveness, and knowing her priorities in life. She is also one in real life, expressing in her Cinderella interview that “to get to the opportunity to help other women feel empowered is extremely meaningful to me.”

SUPPORTING FEMALE CAST

The Entire Cast of the New Cinderella Movie Starring Camila Cabello

Princess Gwen is absolutely brilliant. She had so many ideas on energy sustainability, poverty reduction, and ruling a kingdom. Through her, we see how girls who have so much genius but are overlooked for leadership positions because of their gender. Proving herself worthy to ascend as queen, she illustrated how the traditional and modern femininity can absolutely be combined. Yes, girls and women can truly be anything—from strong leaders to adorable princesses and even both.

Minnie Driver’s Queen Beatrice slays, and is a literal and figurative queen. Not only is she given absolute zingers of lines such as “What is this fresh hell?” and a sarcastic “Hmm… yes,” she is also the woman responsible for the main villain of the story’s change of heart: the king. Meanwhile, Idina Menzel gets absolute bops, singing a rousing rendition of Material Girl, as well as an original song about how difficult it is to be a woman called Dream Girl. She sings this after Ella refuses to marry the prince, and all the townswomen and supporting female cast join in.

PRINCE ROBERT

Cinderella (2021) Review: Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss - The Quaker Campus

It’s not just the women who get a modern touch in the movie. In every Cinderella remake, the characters always ask “Who will marry the prince?” But no one ever asks, “How is the prince?” Think about it: aside from the pressure of being next in line for the throne, he also has to choose a bride in one night. Two monumental life-changing decisions ahead of him, and all the king (his father) tells him is to stop being a child and man up.

Every guy can relate to being told to “man up” and accept the mantle of traditional masculinity: exerting one’s power and dominance, never showing emotion, being pressured to get with a girl (and being shamed for not being sexual enough or being too sexual), to constantly prove one’s manliness and more. But in the 21st Century, not every man wants to adopt this kind of masculinity. Instead, Prince Robert chooses himself and forges his own path in life—not the one that was written for him. It is hinted that he would rather hunt than be a king, so perhaps that’s what he does on his post-movie travels with Cinderella.

MEN DON’T HAVE TO CONFORM TO ONE IMAGE

Kay Cannon's 'Cinderella' Is Trying Too Hard to Be Cool - The Atlantic

The movie also exposes that traditional masculinity is largely performative and full of rules and behavior policing, such as putting on a deep “king voice” and looking down on others. Rather than forcing all men to abide by the strict rules of manliness, people should just let men live.

The world needs men with feelings, guys who write songs about love, boys who love to dress up, and everything in between. Just like there is no one way to be a girl or a woman, there is no one way to be a boy or a man as well— as demonstrated by Billy Porter’s gender stereotype-smashing performance as the Fab G. If Mulan can take on a soldier’s mantle, then a guy can play the Fairy Godmother.

Even the prince’s friends have some personality. On their search for Ella (with the glass slipper), Prince Robert and his merry band of bros are on the verge of giving up when his friend gives a heartfelt and inspirational speech about love. It was a touching and unexpected moment that shows how the scriptwriters really cared to show as many kinds of men in this film as possible instead of just relying on stereotypes.

Despite being given ample opportunities, the movie does not pull an “all men suck” route. Confiding in Ella during the ball, the prince even expressed deep admiration for the way his father rode into war wearing a suit of armor and how he wanted to be like that. With Prince Robert, the King, Fab G, and even the Prince’s love-stricken friend; the movie shows that there is room for all kinds of masculinity in the world. As mentioned earlier, yes, the Prince is given personality and songs. Not just the obligatory love duet with the heroine, but his own solos.

A MODERN DEPICTION OF GENDER

Camila Cabello 'Cinderella' Movie On Amazon Draws 1 Million Households In Debut – Deadline

It wasn’t the perfect movie, but it is definitely the most modern thinking Cinderella remake. Despite being set in medieval times, it didn’t portray its women as simple folk with simple ambitions. It gave Cinderella more to strive for outside marrying the prince. It also doesn’t fall into the trap to portray all the men as idiots who can’t think for themselves. The film actually sheds a light on the all too real struggles for men to conform to a certain image when in reality, they want to be someone else. While Cinderella may not groundbreaking in quality, it’s commendable how it tried to modernize gender roles.

Hwang In Youp Smashes Stereotypes With BYS Philippines One Skincare Step at a Time

line
Who says women are the only ones who can have clear and healthy skin? This 'True Beauty' actor certainly doesn't think so.

Hwang In Youp uncovers true beauty as the new face of BYS Philippines.

While it’s the exciting storylines and heart-stopping plot twists that keep us in the loop of all past, present, and even future K-Dramas, we can’t deny that having eye candy actors and actresses play a big part in it as well. A perfect example of this is the rising actor who most recently played supposed bad boy Han Seo Joon of the fictional Saebom High School in True Beauty, Hwang In Youp. His piercing gaze and chic mullet had us falling head over heels for him, but it was also his clear and silky smooth skin that captured our hearts every single time. This is why it comes as no surprise that he graces us as the new face of BYS Philippines.

Being thrown into the spotlight because of his natural talent and captivating looks, it’s clear that Hwang In Youp is making a name for himself. The 30-year old actor who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Fashion Design initially wanted to have his own clothing line before pursuing a career in modelling. A year later, he made his acting debut that eventually led to his breakout role in True Beauty, a K-Drama based on the webtoon of the same name, that aired from 2020 to 2021. On the show, his character’s fellow students were just fawning all over him, and BYS Philippines did, too. Thus, a breathtaking collaboration was born.

Smashing stereotypes through skincare

Initially known for being a makeup brand, BYS eventually launched their own skincare line this 2021. Skin by BYS has emphasized the importance of loving ourselves harder with the help of their 10 skincare products, and through their latest venture with Hwang In Youp, they aren’t just here to guide us in uncovering true beauty, but to also break stereotypes and say men can have their own skincare routines as well.

According to iFace General Manager Angie Goyena, “Signing on Hwang In Youp as our endorser is a statement about our stubborn assumptions concerning gender and beauty. This is an opportunity for us to smash stereotypes and shift away from standards, as well as be that voice to help shape the way we see beauty.” Skin by BYS Minis is a specially curated package of six products that offer men and women high-quality skincare that’s light on the packaging and on our pockets.

The set contains the Extra Gentle Milk Jelly Cleanser that yields smoother and brighter complexion with its non-irritating formula suitable for all skin types, the Extra Hydrating Balancing Toner that reduces fine lines while keeping moisture locked in, and the Extra Glow Brightening Serum that helps achieve a more youthful and healthier glow. It also includes the Extra Glow Face Cream that illuminates the skin, the Extra Brightening Eye Cream that brightens the skin around the eyes, and the Extra Effortless Pore Perfecting Sunblock with SPF 50 PA+++ that protects the skin from the negative effects of UV rays.

Similar to Hwang In Youp’s remarkable journey to the top, Skin by BYS Minis creates a clearer and brighter way for us, men and women alike, to uncover true beauty.

Along with the six Skin by BYS products, fans will be ecstatic to receive two limited edition photocards of Hwang In Youp himself! Head over to your nearest Watsons or The SM Store, or visit Amorfia, Watsons, and ShopSM to get yours online.

In the Philippine entertainment industry, love teams come and go like the seasons. It feels like every other month, a new love team is introduced to the public in the hopes of being the next It-couple. Some fizzle out while others make an undeniable splash. But few loves teams have left a mark and impact as great as KathNiel has. Ever since 2011, Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla have made millions laugh, cry, and feel kilig both on and off the screen. Through it all, they have withstood the test of time to be one of the most popular love teams of the modern generation and establish themselves as the standard.

So, in celebration of the couple’s 10th anniversary as a love team, KathNiel dropped a documentary called KATHNIEL: ISANG DEKADA that charts their journey. Not only is the documentary a must-watch for any KathNiel fan, but it’s also a worthy viewing experience for anyone who has ever been curious as to what makes this phenomenal love teamwork work so well.

THE BLOSSOMING OF KATHNIEL

Before you get to know the love team, you first have to get to know the people behind the pairing, which is why the documentary dedicates its beginning to set up how Kath and DJ were as kids and young teens. With commentary from their mothers, it helps build them up, their personalities, and see where they came from. We get to see Kathryn’s start as a commercial model and Daniel’s beginnings as the son of a celebrity couple.

It also helps build the context for their eventual first meeting, giving an inside look into how exactly their relationship started to form and what the initial feelings of Kathryn and Daniel were towards each other. The couple’s early years are explored in detail as we get to see who made the first move, what they liked about each other, and the like.

THE LOVE OF THE FANS

KathNiel has a solid chemistry that is evident both on and off-screen. But the power couple wouldn’t be where they are today if it weren’t for the help from their fans. This is something KATHNIEL: ISANG DEKADA dedicates time to. The documentary takes a look at the awe-inspiring fan culture and following that KathNiel inspired and still has to this day.

What makes it better is that a few notable and diverse personalities from the KathNiel fandom are interviewed and featured in the documentary so that the fans themselves can speak about the love team. Even international fans are featured. It delves into topics like what they like about the pair and how Kathryn and Daniel affected their fans and vice versa. The documentary understands the influence and impacts the fans had on KathNiel.

WITH TIME COMES MATURITY

With any long-lasting relationship comes growth and KATHNIEL: ISANG DEKADA delves into the growth of Kathryn and Daniel both as a love team and as individuals. It tells this through how the pair increasingly take on more mature roles from Princess and I, She’s Dating the Gangster ,and The Hows of Us. Viewers also get to see how Kath and DJ evolved as individuals. A notable moment from the documentary was when they talked about Kath filming Hello, Love, Goodbye without Daniel. They go into the emotional journey that it was for them but how they came out of it as stronger and better people.

Also, they talk about each other not just as co-workers, but as partners in a committed relationship. They open up about what it’s like being with each other and how they both have grown in maturity and honesty. They also aren’t afraid to admit that they have their struggles and fights. But what matters to KathNiel is that they come out of it as better people.

MADE WITH LOVE

KathNiel is truly an iconic love team. When people talk about the most memorable love teams in the Philippine showbiz industry, KathNiel will be in that conversation. With KATHNIEL: ISANG DEKADA, it really puts the focus on the couple themselves, their beginnings, what makes them tick, and everything in between. With the help of their friends, fans, and family, Kathryn and Daniel are able to tell their story in a way that their love team deserved. KATHNIEL: ISANG DEKADA has been the best way their story has been told so far. And with KathNiel set to have their comeback teleserye soon, this story is still far from finished.

line
You can’t stop the music.

This weekend, get up close and personal with an impressive lineup of local and international acts that will remind you of the good ‘ol musical festival days with G Music Fest 2021.

If you were one to frequent live concerts, music festivals, and similar expressions of entertainment, it goes without saying that nothing quite compares to its visceral, euphoric experience. As we near the two-year mark of the raging pandemic, there is still no sign of things inching towards the elusive sense of normal, at least in our side of the world. Compelled to adjust in the name of safety and science, the ways of the past certainly cannot exist in the scale it used to be mounted, at least for now. With no shortage of music to cling to over the unrelenting onslaught of the coronavirus crisis, artists have had to get increasingly creative with connecting to their audience despite the layers of limitations and details of distance. Leaning in on technology and innovations much more than before, livestreams and virtual musical festivals have become the standard of press and performances.

Instead of being bogged down by the increasingly frustrating fact that interacting with people has to be more considered and careful than before, the entertainment industry expedited a digital revolution. From a swell in intimate lives on social media profiles, large-scale livestreams, and ambitious virtual musical festivals, the intention was to get the message across: you can’t stop the music.

With much of our lives playing out online, logging on to a digital version of a concert is what we have to content ourselves with, so much so that it has been the norm of sorts. It isn’t the same, yes, but it’s better than nothing. And as we continue to seesaw into different swirls of our mental, emotional, and physical states, these shows on the internet have been our saving grace.

And It Goes On And On And On

Joining the ranks of the many virtual realities that have proved to be successful in bridging the good ‘ol days with the ways of the future is the upcoming G Music Fest, the annual event hosted by Globe that forms part of its 917 Day tradition. This year, Globe is bringing the music festival experience straight to you, albeit virtually. Over the last weekend of month, you will not only be treated to music from an impressive roster of local and international artists, but you also will have the chance to get up close and personal with them.

On September 25, 2021 (5:30 PM – 8:30 PM), “fans will be greeted by their favorite artists in the exclusive event, Up Close,” a statement from G Music Fest reads. Accessible on the official Facebook page of Globe, you will come face-to-face with such acts as HONNE, Vance Joy, BEKA, December Avenue, Silent Sanctuary, I Belong To The Zoo, Alamat, The Juans, and fresh from the critically acclaimed and commercially successful release of Pagsibol and Back In The Zone, the phenomenal P-pop group, SB19. And the next day, September 26 (4:00 PM – 10:00 PM), the much-anticipated virtual music festival, G Music Fest, featuring Philippine-exclusive performances will take place for free.

In a consolidated effort to build connections and bring people closer through music, G Music Fest is making a case for the standard of virtual music festivals. While we look forward to the time when we can all troop to the same space made for the community of passion and just enjoy the music, this is the next best thing to keep the music going and growing. Until then, set those alarms this early and get ready to have a dance party in your room this weekend.

To further enjoy the virtual music festival, G Music Fest, you can redeem 2GB worth of free date by registering through the new GlobeOne App. After, the treat can be redeemed under the rewards section of the app.
