Bringing a good kind of trouble.

Nothing stopped EVNNE from pursuing the career they wanted, and now that they have made their debut, the members are more than ready to show what they are capable of.

First brought to prominence by their participation in the survival program Boys Planet, and despite the initial uncertainty of getting eliminated, members KEITA, PARK HANBIN, LEE JEONGHYEON, YOO SEUNGEON, JI YUNSEO, MUN JUNGHYUN, and PARK JIHOO kept going and forged a new path as they come together as one. “Not long after the program concluded, an incredible opportunity to debut as EVNNE came to all of us,” EVNNE told NYLON Manila in an exclusive interview. Starting anew as part of the up-and-coming group under Jellyfish Entertainment, the boys are ready to establish their own identity and shine in the scene like the “evening’s newest étoiles.”

“Appearing on the show served as a significant source of inspiration.” Applying what they’ve learned from the competition show, it’s time for EVNNE to showcase how ambitious they are in pursuing their dreams with their first mini-album, Target: ME and title track Trouble, which were released last September. By aiming to become the “target” of everyone’s attention, the septet’s album showcases various styles and charms, from hip-hop to R&B with the tracks TROUBLERole ModelPretty ThingYour TextJUKEBOX, and Even More.

With their anticipated debut, they are poised to unveil their multifaceted talents and potential. From being part of Boys Planet to debuting as EVNNE, the members sat down with NYLON Manila to talk about the album preparations and their aspirations to shine brightly in the K-pop industry.

First and foremost, congratulations on your anticipated debut. The members already gained attraction even before debuting during the survival program Boys Planet. Does this amount of attention put much pressure on you, or does it just make you feel better since you already know that many people are already supporting you?

EVNNE: Our debut would have been entirely impossible without the support from everyone. Though we were not able to make our debut through Boys Planet, EVNNE was made possible with the continuous love and support of those who stood by us until the very end, enabling us to persist in the pursuit of our dreams. Therefore, we are very grateful rather than burdened by their love.

Tell us more about Target: ME. What is the overall main concept of the album, and could you elaborate more on the title track TROUBLE?

EVNNE: Our debut album, Target: ME, embodies our ambition to become the target of public affection. For this, the album encompasses a diverse range of concepts and music, featuring the compelling title track TROUBLE, with the members aiming to captivate the public with their unique charm.

TROUBLE is an intense Baltimore Club genre of music that portrays the members as attractive yet mischievous boys who are out to change the world on their own. This song showcases EVNNE’s determination and strength through its addictive beats and visually striking choreography. Please send us your love and support for this album!

If you could pick only one track from the album that you think will be the best to introduce EVNNE to people, which song would you recommend, and why?

JI YUNSEO: I believe the track Role Model is the song that most reflects our group’s identity and energy, and I’m sure that other members will agree. The hip-hop genre suits our members great, and the song’s vibrant and exciting vibe captures the energy in each of us well. Furthermore, I believe Role Model is the perfect representation of EVNNE today, as it encapsulates the journey we’ve undertaken to make our dream, or our debut, come true while looking up to our role models for inspiration and guidance.

Even though you already have had experiences, there are still activities that you weren’t able to do like filming your own music video or recording your own whole album in a studio. Could you please tell us about your experience on these? Are there any fun or memorable behind-the-scenes stories you would like to share with us?

LEE JEONGHYEON: Even though all the valuable lessons we gained from our participation in Boys Planet, it was our first time filming the music video so there were several awkward moments. As for the acting aspect, we frequently turned to KEITA, the only member with prior experience, for advice. Filming scenes where we were spray painting or riding a bike turned out to be more challenging than we had initially anticipated. So we would like to thank the directors who skillfully filmed and edited our video, ensuring that we appeared at our best.

PARK JIHOO: There were several things that I encountered for the first time while filming the music video, such as smoke bombs and spray paints, which I found to be quite novel when I saw it. I used the spray paint to write my name on the wall, and it felt like I had finally become the real bad boy, so I quite enjoyed it!

Could you please share with us your overall experience participating in Boys Planet? What do you believe is the best thing you’ve learned or experienced given the opportunity to take part in it?

KEITA: Appearing on Boys Planet served as a significant source of inspiration for me. It provided an opportunity to substantially expand my musical horizons by immersing myself in genres and styles that I had not previously tried or those I had found somewhat challenging. Collaborating with the friends who were also part of the show allowed me to grow and evolve musically in ways I hadn’t expected.

PARK HANBIN: I learned and experienced a lot through the program. We had the privilege of encountering opportunities that are often not given to most trainees, such as performing in front of a big audience. We also received a lot of advice regarding performance techniques and stage etiquette, which contributed significantly to our growth. Not only that, spending time with mentors, seniors who have already made their debut, and fellow trainees who share the common dream, gifted me with invaluable experiences.

The members said they were uncertain and hesitant about their future after not making it into ZEROBASEONE, but because of this situation, were you able to pick up the biggest thing or mindset that you think you should have as you embark on this journey?

YOO SEUNGEON: After Boys Planet, there was a period during which many of our members grappled with uncertainty. Being eliminated left me personally questioning whether continuing down this path was the right decision. However, not long after the program concluded, an incredible opportunity to debut as EVNNE came to all of us. This helped us regroup and rekindle our pursuit of the dream of debuting.

More importantly, this opportunity came to us because our fans saw and continued to support our dream from the very beginning. I was deeply touched by the immense love from our fans, and at the same time, it instilled in me a stronger commitment to work even harder to properly give back their support.

Since EVNNE means “EVENing’s Newest Etoiles,” if each one of you could name his own star, what would you name it, and why?

KEITA: I would name the star “Lucky” with the hope that whenever ENNVEs think of us looking up at this star, they may experience happiness and joy.

PARK HANBIN: “Yoonseul” which means “glittering ripples of water” in pure Korea. I want EVNNE to be a comforting presence, like a gentle, twinkling star in the night sky.

LEE JEONGHYEON: I want to name the star “Jeong-rius”, which is a combination of Sirius, the brightest art in the Earth’s night sky, and my name, JEONGHYEON.

YOO SEUNGEON: I will name it the “Always Star” because it represents my desire to always be on our fans’ side, shining brightly more than ever. We will also continue to work hard to become a rising star in the K-pop industry.

JI YUNSEO: I will name the star an “Everlasting Star,” meaning a star whose light never fades. Like its name, I also want to become a star that doesn’t fade but rather grows brighter with time.

MUN JUNGHYUN: I will name it “Rainbow,” embodying our group’s versatility to pull off various images and concepts.

PARK JIHOO: I’d like to name it “Jihangsung,” which a short for “Jihoo Hangsung (star)”

Stars shine so bright and give off energy. In what ways or how do you think EVNNE will be able to shine brightly in the K-Pop industry? How will you work toward getting that spotlight in this generation?

EVNNE: We believe that our greatest strength lies in the fact that each member is an all-rounder who can excel in various roles, regardless of their position within the group. Likewise, EVNNE is not constrained by a particular musical style or concept. We are committed to continuous growth and improvement, ensuring that each comeback presents a fresh image and a diverse range of music to our audience.

Your first album amassed over 240,000 copies sold on Hanteo within the first week of its release. What was your reaction to that kind of achievement, considering that you’re just a newly-debuted group?

EVNNE: The immense interest we received immediately upon our debut took us by surprise, and we are genuinely delighted and thankful for all the love. We will work hard to give back all the love and support we’ve received!

You already have experience performing on stages because of Boys Planet, but festivals like KCON and Idol Radio Live felt different because they’re grand-scale. What was your experience like? Do you let your nervousness take over you?

MUN JUNGHYUN: We used to be very nervous before going on stage, for instance, during Idol Radio Live as well as KCON. These were the first occasions when we performed on such a grand scale, with KCON being our first international performance. Thankfully, the audience welcomed us and the volume of cheers from our fans grew even louder with a bigger audience size. This enthusiastic support filled us with energy, allowing us to thoroughly enjoy the performances, making both of these stages unforgettable and delightful.

Do you have any messages to your fans in the Philippines?

EVNNE: To all ENNVEs in the Philippines, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support and the immense love you’ve shown us, since our appearance on Boys Planet to our beginning as EVNNE. We eagerly look forward to the day we can visit the Philippines in person, so we can thank you in person and share the stage with our Filipino ENNVEs! We hope for this day to come as soon as possible and in the meantime, please continue to follow and support EVNNE until then. Thank you!

How David Park Manifested A Role Of A Lifetime As Part Of The Hamilton International Tour Cast

line
And that's on manifestation.

David Park was once just an audience member sitting front row at a Hamilton show after winning lottery tickets. He’s now living the dream.

For over two months now, The Hamilton International Tour Cast has been having hundreds of theatergoers get on their feet every night with the highly-anticipated, sold-out, and acclaimed Philippines run of Hamilton. And in a cast of stars that have talent running through every inch of their bodies, David Park has stood out as a fan favorite for his dual roles of Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson. It’s an opportunity that the Korean-American has been honing for a few years now. But to hear it from the man itself, it’s one he will always be grateful for with how he practically managed to manifest it into existence.

NOT THROWING AWAY HIS SHOT

Before David was able to perform in front of audiences around the world, he was one himself. In 2015, he saw the show for the first time with its original Broadway cast after winning lottery tickets. “I remember being so moved because I was in school for theater at the time and the show made me realize that there was going to be a new wave of musical theater coming out that I was perfectly suited for,” recalls David. That night, he went home and prayed that the stars would align and he would find his way into the show. Little did he know that it would be the start of a years-long journey to the center stage.

Between 2017 to 2020, David joined multiple auditions for Hamilton. But despite how far he would come in the process (he made it to the final four in 2017), he would miss out on the final spot. Things changed though in 2020 when he finally got offered the role of Lafayette and Jefferson for Hamilton’s US National Tour. Sadly, that was in March 2020, just when the COVID-19 pandemic began to sweep the world.

DAVID PARK HAMILTON

“It was really hard because this job had been my focus for so many years. It felt like I finally got it and it got taken away from me before I had it,” says David at the moment. The nature of the theater industry caused the actor to worry that he would lose the role and not be able to achieve the long-held dream he worked hard for. “Hamilton had been my goal for so long, and it felt like a waste almost like I wasn’t sure what to make of it. So, it was really disheartening.”

Luckily, he was never replaced and David’s time finally came in 2021 when he got on the Hamilton stage for the first time. And while he routinely gets rave reviews for his performance as Lafayette and Jefferson, looking back, David sees the pandemic pause as helping him prepare for the role even further.

DAVID PARK HAMILTON

“I think I wasn’t ready for the job when I got it,” he candidly admits. “I needed that time to digest and be like, ‘I got it’. So when I came back to it, I found myself realizing that I was a lot more relaxed and calm and kind of confident stepping into the part as opposed to when I actually got the job, I would have been way more nervous and scared.”

DOUBLE THE ROLES, DOUBLE THE FUN

There are those moments in your life when you feel like everything is going right. And for David, getting the roles of Lafayette and Jefferson was that moment. Even during the audition process, David felt more comfortable and relaxed as compared to his previous callbacks. You could say it was the role that he was meant to play. “When I finally got to do the show, it was such a relief because I had been kind of manifesting this job for like almost five years at that point. Even to this day, I’m still kind of pinching myself.”

DAVID PARK HAMILTON

To many, taking on two distinct characters in a high-energy show might seem like a daunting task, but for David, Lafayette and Jefferson have been a treat for him to embody for well over three years now. “It’s fun being able to play two parts in this show that is incredibly expressive and true to my musical tastes.” Playing these historical figures through a different lens has been double the fun for David, especially with the different energy he gives each character.

DAVID PARK HAMILTON

For Lafayette, it’s all about heroism and being part of a bigger cause. “I really feel like act one is just like, we’re all in this together. Everyone is for the same purpose. It feels like I get to be a part of the full company.” But when it comes to Jefferson, he plays the bad guy, and as such, adds so much fun into the role. “It’s basically just me and Madison and I kind of push everyone away. We get to go up against the main protagonist. I’m going to lose every night, right? But my character doesn’t know that. So I have this confidence of trying my best to win.”

DAVID PARK HAMILTON

It’s a big thematic jump between the two roles, but one he welcomes. And as different as they are, David does see himself in both characters. “I find different things resonate with me at different times. Sometimes I feel more in line with Lafayette, sometimes, I feel better with Jefferson. I resonate with different things about both people, but they’re both so larger than life and that’s fun to play.”

IN THE ROOM WHERE IT HAPPENED

Since September, David, along with the rest of The Hamilton International Tour Cast, has been entertaining crowds at The Theater in Solaire, which also marked the Asia debut of the celebrated musical. But more than just doing what he loves on a near-nightly basis, David sees the representation of an Asian on the center stage as what means the most to him in the Philippines run. “Personally, being Korean-American representation is kind of my purpose in this industry. I didn’t grow up with a lot of people that I resonated with that had an Asian face. So, I wanted to come to Asia and represent people like me.”

DAVID PARK HAMILTON

Along with other Asians on the cast, such as Rachelle Ann Go, David hopes that the message of Asian excellence is delivered loud and clear. “It means so much to me to be here,” he gushes. “It means the world to do the show with Rachelle Ann Go, that’s an honor. It’s just amazing to be a part of this company and to be received so wonderfully.”

DAVID PARK HAMILTON

So, what does David Park like most about being in the Philippines? “It’s the opportunity to live in Asia and a homogenous society. I never had that growing up. I always had to juggle all these identities. And that’s not to say that people in the Philippines don’t go through that in their own ways. But like, you don’t have to worry about reckoning with being Filipino. And that’s really powerful and beautiful.”

TELLING HIS STORY

David made his dream a reality as he proudly stands tall as an Asian-American actor helping make a space for people like him in the industry. And as he sees it, if he made it, so can other young people hoping to do the same thing. As cliche as it sounds, all you have to do is be yourself.

“Your greatest ability, your greatest gift is who you are. You just have to keep working on yourself. Find out what you like, find out what you don’t like, and especially find out who you are. And don’t try to be who you think someone wants you to be like. No one can tell you what you can do. So, the more you know how to embody yourself, the more you can authentically do that with a character.”

DAVID PARK HAMILTON

In 2015, David Park was just a young theater actor who got lucky and scored lottery tickets to watch Hamilton. Now, not only has he managed to manifest his dream role into existence, but he also is at that point in his life where people are hoping to win lottery tickets to see him perform on stage. It’s that kind of full-circle moment that can serve as an inspiration for a movie’s plot.

DAVID PARK HAMILTON

In a moment of reflection, David looks back on a performance in Puerto Rico that had Lin Manuel Miranda and a few of the other original Broadway cast in the audience. “I remember I was standing in the wings ready to start and I realized that the kid who was watching the show was the one performing that day.” In moments of success, self-doubt and impostor syndrome can creep in. It’s something David can relate to. But after all these years as a performer, he learned to let his unique self shine through. It’s something he would want his 2015 self to know. “Whatever, whoever you are is what we want to see on stage.”

DAVID PARK HAMILTON

At the end of the day, David has been making moves. And even in those moments where he does get disappointed, the honor of a lifetime never leaves his mind. “We forgive ourselves because even when you’re living out your wildest dreams, there’s always times when you’re going to be a little dissatisfied. But I get to travel the world doing a show that I still love after three years. It’s an honor in every sense of the word and it’s truly humbling to be one of four people in the world that gets to play Lafayette and Jefferson. I take it as a huge honor and responsibility to show up as the best that I can.”

Hamilton Philippines will run until November 26th.

History is happening.

We talk to the cast members of the Hamilton International Tour about what the show and what musical theater means to the young generation.

Add Manila to the list of the greatest cities in the world! Hamilton is finally in the Philippines with the International Tour Cast—and they’ve been having a great run. The award-winning and widely-acclaimed Hamilton, created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, tells the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton in a fresh and modern way and is entirely sung- and rapped-through. Based on Ron Chernow’s biography Alexander Hamilton (2004), the musical condenses Hamilton’s life, relationships, involvement in the American Revolution and subsequent political conflicts, and life-consuming desire for a legacy into 47 performances set to a blend of pop, hip-hop, rap, R&B, jazz, and of course, show tunes.

Just like that, Hamilton took the world by storm, what with its diverse cast, engaging narrative, epic music, inspirational messages, and emotional beats that have you tearing up in your theater seat.

A filmed version of the musical was released on Disney+ in 2020, and the musical has also gone overseas with shows held all over the world, from Broadway to Abu Dhabi, Singapore to Sydney. The International Tour debuted in Asia with Hamilton in Manila at The Theatre in Solaire in September 2023, with Filipina artist Rachelle Ann Go as Eliza Schuyler, Hamilton’s wife—a role she originated in the West End production of the musical.

But more than just its music, Hamilton serves as a great representation of the new generation—young, scrappy, hungry, and thirsting for change. It’s a feeling a few of the cast members of the International Tour in the Philippine staging can relate to.

From top to bottom, L-R: Elandrah Eramiha, Dayton Tavares, Emmy Saheki, Indigo Hunt, Claire Abaijah-Griffin

In an exclusive interview with NYLON Manila, Hamilton International Tour cast members Elandrah Eramiha (Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds), Indigo Hunt (Ensemble/Woman 2), Dayton Tavares (Ensemble/Man 1, Charles Lee), Claire Abaijah-Griffin (Ensemble/Woman 4), and Emmy Saheki (Swing) talk about the musical’s Philippine debut, its relevance to a young, global audience, and the magic of storytelling through music and movement.

hamilton ph gen z cast

Even if Hamilton‘s theme and setting revolves around US history, the show has garnered fans from all over the world. Why do you think that is so?

Elandrah: I think, the music. The music in the show is none like any other show around the world. I think this is the first show that caters to every genre of music. It’s got rap, it’s got jazz, it has classical music, it’s got funk and hip-hop and R&B, which is so unheard of in our generation, so I think it really caters to the young people and the sense of music that they actually listen to every day. And to have that in a live theater setting is actually incredible.

Indigo: I feel like, as well as the music, if we’re talking about the narrative, ultimately it is a story of an underdog, which is a pretty [universally-relatable] thing for people to connect with.

hamilton ph gen z cast

When it was announced that Hamilton was coming to Manila, many were understandably excited, including many Gen Z who scrambled to get tickets. What do you think it is about Hamilton that has endeared the show to many young people?

Emmy: I think, like what everyone said, the music, it’s relatable and…it’s a great story, like that hustle mentality and defying the odds. I think also, the casting is so diverse. And seeing people on stage that look like you and these opportunities that a lot of us didn’t have, to be able to sit in an audience and see people who you see yourself in is really amazing. I think that brings a lot of people in, and it’s very tangible and relatable.

hamilton ph gen z cast

Claire: Going off of what Emmy said as well, our generation is so…we want to relate and we want to see ourselves within that story. When I first watched this show, I was like “Oh, I can see myself as a part of that, in many different roles, not just as an ensemble or a sister or a Son of Liberty…” You feel like you can see yourself in those characters. And this generation is very…woke and understanding and we’re looking for change and shifts, and that’s what we can see within this show, that there’s something shifting. And we want to be a part of that.

hamilton ph gen z cast

For musical theater in general, why do you think it is still a viable form of entertainment for the new generation who grew up with smartphones and social media?

Indigo: I think it’s really cool, because musical theater has this ephemeral nature where you’re only there for that moment and, you know, if you miss it, you miss it. Especially in growing up in a technological era where if you put something up on the Internet, it’s there forever and you can go back and rewatch it, there’s something really special about a show and theater. And sitting in an audience with that group of people watching that production…it’s just like one of those special moments in life that I feel like is a bit rare these days.

Dayton: Yeah, you feel like you’re just like a part of it. It’s kind of like sporting events, like a football match on TV compared to being at the stadium with the raw noise and the energy, and kind of feeling like you being there that night was a reason that drove the whole performance or event forward.

hamilton ph gen z cast

Listening to music really is such a different experience from, say, watching a concert or a show.

Indigo: Yeah, it’s an experience. I feel like it would attract the Gen Z generation because those kinds of experiences are few and far between, I feel, in this life that we live [where we’re mostly] on our phones.

hamilton ph gen z cast
hamilton ph gen z cast

There’s a lot of hype and anticipation with the Manila run of Hamilton. Do you feel pressured to live up to the expectations? And if so, how do you deal with that?

Elandrah: I didn’t feel any pressure at all. I feel like because Hamilton is so amazing in itself and us just being a part of that and being part of this whole legacy of bringing it around the world—that was like an honor. I did not feel pressure at all to be a certain way or to act like the Disney+ version you know. We really brought ourselves to it, and I think because we’re so proud of what we created, we were just honored and proud to bring it all over the world. And I’m excited to see our version of it, and there was never any pressure, I don’t think.

What do you hope people take away when they watch a Hamilton show?

Claire: I hope when people come to watch here at the Solaire, that they can see a little bit of themselves up there and take away that feeling of hope, because I feel like that’s potentially the feeling that got us all here in Manila and on this show and in this job. When you leave this show, I feel like…I would love for the audience to feel like they can do something—they need to follow whatever their purpose is. Take away that feeling of hope, for me.

hamilton ph gen z cast

Elandrah: The story is literally about an orphan who becomes one of the founding fathers of the biggest country in the entire world, and that journey in itself—anyone can do anything, anyone can strive to be anything if they work hard and follow their dreams. So cliche, but it’s so true!

Emmy: And a bit of joy, I think…the beauty of doing a live show is that what happens on the stage every day—it changes because you’re connecting with people. You know, we have different people on, or those moments where we interact—those are really happening, you know. It’s not like [in] films where they’re doing cuts and it’s perfect and they’re finding one cut out of hundreds, it’s happening there and then, so I hope they take away a little bit of that joy and the happiness that we share with each other on the stage and that it’s felt [by] the audience.

hamilton ph gen z cast

How do you think Hamilton’s story and message still resonates in the 21st century?

Emmy: I feel like—Claire touched on this—there’s a lot of change and shift happening, particularly [in] our generation and the next ones coming up. Like, trying and striving for change in the world, and you know, there’s a lot going on [at] the moment globally. The story is very much [about] a man who’s defying all odds and he’s going against what everyone is putting on him, and I think that is really what we’re trying to do ultimately. I think that story really rings true to what’s happening right now in the world.

hamilton ph gen z cast

Hamilton revolves around telling important events of the American Revolution with a diverse set of characters. Why do you think it’s important for underrepresented groups to have a bigger presence in these stories?

Elandrah: You just said it—it’s important to see! [Laughs.] Before I was born, or even growing up, I never, ever saw anyone who looked like me, ever, or there was just, like, one role in the background. So now, to see people who looked like me represented in the front, like leading things, is actually incredible. And I think that’s important for someone who has so many nieces and nephews, who wants to be a mum someday, wants to see this for them. For me to be a part of that change already and to be someone who people look at [and go] ‘Oh my gosh, I look like her,’ that already is a shift and change and I’m so proud.

Hamilton in Manila will run until November 26th.

A Long Way From Home: How This 23-Year Old Pinay Is Managing Living Alone In Spain

line
Taking the leap.

Curious about living and working abroad? Hear from this 23-year old fresh graduate currently residing in Spain all about taking a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Related: How This 22-Year-Old Fresh Graduate Achieved Her Dream Of Living In New York City

“The scary news is, you’re on your own now, but the cool news is, you’re on your own now.” If you’ve seen the TikToks of people traveling alone to work or study abroad set to this sound from Taylor Swift’s NYU speech, you might have felt the urge to start over in a new city or heard the call to adventure and new experiences. While it’s a huge, difficult step to take, moving to a new country is a dream aspired to by many—among them a fresh graduate that’s recently marked one month away from home.

Brittany Kirsch is a 23-year old fresh graduate of English Language Studies from the University of Santo Tomas. In October of this year, Brittany set off all by herself to Toledo, Spain to work as an auxiliar de conversación for a primary school, an opportunity offered to her by UST. Auxiliares de Conversacíon are proficient English-speakers who assist with teaching at schools in Spain, helping students (and sometimes teachers) improve their English skills.

Such work-abroad programs are offered in and outside of universities across the Philippines, allowing young Filipinos to broaden their horizons and experience different cultures. From taking better economic opportunities to simply wanting to explore the world, plenty of young Filipinos are taking the chance to live, study, or work abroad for a variety of reasons.

auxiliar de conversación

It’s a daunting endeavor—living far away from home requires a lot of sacrifice. But if you’re interested in the experience, hear it all from a young woman who is managing living on her own halfway across the world.

Tell me about yourself!

I’m Brittany Kirsch and I’m currently an Auxiliar de Conversación in Toledo, Spain. I’ve been an intern here for almost two months now and I’m loving it! I work as an English language and culture assistant at a kindergarten and primary school in Numancia de la Sagara in Toledo.

What is the work that you do in Spain? What are some of the best things about it?

As a language and culture assistant, my job is to motivate the students (and also teachers) in school to learn a foreign language (i.e., English) by helping them improve their oral and communication skills in English. What we also do as auxiliars that I find very valuable in this program is that we get to introduce and inject our respective cultures.

brittany teaching in spain

For instance, during my first day as an auxiliar, I got to introduce myself and present to the student things about myself, my country, and culture. This promotes cultural diversity and boosts [students’] critical awareness of particular cultures that exist that they may welcome and engage [with].

That being said, the best thing about my work is that I get to be dynamic and creative in the way I present and conduct my learning materials for teaching the language while at the same time injecting my very own culture.

What are some of the hardest things about it?

The hardest thing about the work is, of course, the language barrier. Most of the students only comprehend Spanish, which is understandable because they’re in kindergarten and primary school and they’re still in the process of their language acquisition of English. After all, this is the very purpose of the program—to influence and motivate them to learn a foreign language!

spain

How were you able to learn about and take this opportunity?

I first heard about this opportunity from my Spanish professor in college who introduced to us the language assistantship program. The program is being offered to all the undergraduates and alumni of the Faculty of Arts and Letters in the University of Santo Tomas and other interested applicants in and out of the university. I believe the program is also offered in selected universities across the country.

Could you walk me through your decision making process regarding moving solo and working abroad?

When I first heard about the program, I was already interested in joining. But it took some time for me to really think if I should grab such an opportunity. Part of me was thinking that I could gain a lot of experience from the program; but at the same time I was thinking that this may be too good to be true, in that I may not be really fit to be an auxiliar. I considered a lot of things—such as being far away from home for at least a year which is a huge step, because I grew up with a mom who really wants to keep her children close to her all the time.

living in spain

But I finally decided that I’d take the risk when I went to a mini despedida party of a friend of ours who happened to be moving to Spain for an internship because she took the same program. I asked her about the application, paper processing, and other [things], and [her excitement and answers] inspired me to apply. During my ride home from the party, I felt the urge to apply, but of course, a little part of me was still skeptical.

What really pushed me to apply without any doubt was my Mama saying “Sige, i-try mo na!” [excitedly] when I got home and brought up the program to her. [That’s when] I knew I was ready to take the leap.

What are the best things about living and working all by yourself all the way across the world?

One of the best things about living and working all by myself abroad is that I get to unearth more about myself as I live and work independently. I’m able to discover things I have yet to know about when it comes to how I handle living alone, manage my work and life balance, and meet new people from different cultures.

The second best thing about living and working abroad is getting out of my comfort zone and actually engaging in intercultural practices. Exploring new things include immersing myself in intercultural dialogues where I communicate with people of varying cultural identities.

What has been the hardest part of living away from home?

The hardest part of living away from home would definitely be…homesickness. The day I actually arrived here in Spain, I already got homesick to the point that I kept video calling my family. I [experienced] separation anxiety [during] the first week of my stay here, which I already expected because I knew that I would really need some time to adjust.

spain

Are you living by any mottos or principles that’s getting you through this experience?

There’s one saying that I always think of that’s getting me through this experience—’que sera, sera’ or ‘whatever will be, will be‘. I heard it as a lullaby that my mother kept singing to us when we were young, which is from Doris Day’s rendition of the song Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be).

It constantly reminds me that there will always be a future in everything that I do, even if I don’t know what the future really holds. But what I know is what I could do now. So, should I want my future to be bright, successful, and exciting, I should do everything to the best of my abilities.

Do you have any advice for people thinking about taking opportunities like this?

My only advice for people thinking about taking the same program is to simply grab this opportunity especially when it is already within sight! It may not be simple—just as how it took some time for me to decide before applying—but with the right motivation, foundation, and purpose, I’m sure they’ll be great auxies soon!

6 Reasons Why Our Beloved Summer’s Choi Ung Will Always Be The Epitome Of Green Flags

line
Our wholesome king.

We can learn a thing or two from Choi Ung about relationship standards and becoming a better partner.

Related: Our Beloved Summer Has Come To An End And Fans Are Not Okay

Our Beloved Summer’s relevance has braved through all seasons of love despite being released two years ago. How can we forget the show that set our relationship standards through the ceiling? All the warm moments from our beloved characters are now etched in our hearts forever, carrying the lessons we got from them throughout our journey of life (and love).

This K-drama was a celebration of love in all forms, and one character definitely embodied whichever existing love languages there are. Choi Ung, played by renowned South Korean actor Choi Wooshik, has become the worldwide epitome of green flags since the series first aired in 2021, and we’re counting down *some* of our favorite qualities of his.

Choi Ung Is Patient, Choi Ung Is Kind

Choi Ung is what love is supposed to be: patient and kind. He has proved his genuine love toward his love interest Yeonsu over time, and we can only wish to have our own Choi Ung. He is empathetic and understanding, but he knows when to stand his ground and affirm his own beliefs. He has shown himself to be immovable when it comes to loving Yeonsu, who is also in constant struggle to keep herself afloat due to internal battles. Thankfully, Ung understands this and remains to be Yeonsu’s rock all throughout his days. What more can we ask for in a guy?

King Of Communication

Yeonsu isn’t the best when it comes to communicating what she truly feels, so it becomes a big rumble of thoughts even though she is having a hard time unraveling. Ung, on the other hand, isn’t afraid to let Yeonsu know what he feels. While Yeonsu trips in her own words, Ung is patient and gentle with her so she can truly communicate with him. Ung is also aware of Yeonsu’s communication limits, that is why learned how to understand Yeonsu beyond words. Needless to say, he was able to master this ability.

It’s The Little Things

It’s not always about the grandiose gestures that define the amount of love one has to give into a relationship, and Choi Ung is the proof of that. His little gestures toward Yeonsu are what made him the ultimate boyfriend material everyone dreams of having. That little scene of Ung supporting Yeonsu’s bag while walking? *Chef’s kiss*.

The Ultimate Golden Retriever Boyfriend

It’s not just how Choi Ung expresses his love but also the way he acts is what melts our hearts. From his silly antics with Yeonsu and Ji-Ung, to habits he developed just so he can keep up with Yeonsu’s lifestyle. It’s his whole existence that keeps our hearts at bay. Not to mention his closet palette and curly hair that goes so well with his personality!

Always, He’ll Care

Lovers Ung and Yeonsu have been away from each other for five years after the messy and brutal break-up the two had. But during this time, it was revealed that both of them hadn’t really moved on from each other. Ung had never lost his love for Yeonsu, even after everything. Despite the many heights Ung has attained with his craft, he always seeks to rest his heart in his home, Yeonsu.

What It Really Means To Be Constant

A recurring theme within the K-drama was the fact that Choi Ung only draws sceneries and architecture because, to him, these are the only things that remain “constant.” However, during Episode 16, we got a glimpse of Ung’s first and only human drawing, and it was, of course, his Yeonsu. Yeonsu was one of the only constant things in his life, and he was sure of that.

We can learn a thing or two from Choi Ung about relationship standards and becoming a better partner. For a relationship to truly work, both parties must exert the right actions in an effort to compromise each other’s lapses. Ung and Yeonsu’s relationship has become an excellent example of give and take in a relationship and how love is a two-way street.

This goes out to everyone seeking a significant other. May Choi Ung’s character remind us that love is supposed to be patient and kind, and that there are still people like Ung walking on this world of ours.

3 Things We Loved (And Didn’t) In Ma’am Chief: Shakedown In Seoul

line
The start of the PCU (PULP Cinematic Universe).

PULP Studios’ first movie is finally here. But is Ma’am Chief worth the price of admission?

Related: Your Cheat Sheet To The Must-See New Movies And Shows Of November 2023

Slight spoilers for the movie ahead.

You probably know PULP as one of the country’s biggest concert producers in the country who helped pioneer the heavy metal and K-pop live experience in the Philippines. But after 25 years, the company is expanding to a new medium: movies. Recently, PULP launched PULP Studios, their latest endeavor in entertainment and storytelling to the format of the silver screen. And up first is Ma’am Chief: Shakedown In Seoul, a comedy that fittingly adds a good dose of Korean culture and stars for a cross-border police story.

Directed by Kring Kim (yes, that Kring Kim), the film follows policewoman Criselda Kaptan (Melai Cantiveros-Francisco) whose place in the force is shaken after a botched police operation causes the sacking of a good friend and fellow police officer. But when a new lead on the case pops up, she decides to take matters into her own hands as she sets out on a secret mission to South Korea, where she disguises herself as a tour guide to apprehend a dangerous fugitive and clear the name of her friend.

With everything that’s going on in the movie, it’s enough to turn heads. But before you head to the cinema to see this international police caper, we break down the things we loved and didn’t about PULP’s first-ever movie.

MELAI CANTIVEROS-FRANCISCO IS AN AMAZING LEAD STAR

MA'AM CHIEF MELAI CANTIVEROS-FRANCISCO

Melai has always been a good actress and an exceptional comedian. It’s a talent that shines bright in Ma’am Chief. She radiates an energy that captures your attention and injects charisma into Criselda. As the lead star, Melai carries the film well and takes command of its oftentimes wacky nature. The comedian and actress is in her element here as she confidently navigates an admittedly simple story. She has the comedic chops to pull it off and also doesn’t disappoint in the more emotional beats of Criselda’s story. It’s over-the-top, wacky, and even self-deprecating in the best way possible.

THE COMEDY HITS, MOST OF THE TIME

MA'AM CHIEF MELAI CANTIVEROS-FRANCISCO

Comedy is the bread and butter of Ma’am Chief, and for the most part, it delivers on that front. While it isn’t the smartest comedy you’ll see in Philippine cinema, it gets the job done with moments that can get you to laugh out loud in the movie theater. Most of the jokes do land, mainly thanks to Melai’s quick wit. If you’re looking for a fun movie to have a good laugh, Ma’am Chief is not a bad option. While the movie does get serious at times, it’s mainly a lighthearted romp through Seoul.

K-DRAMA AND K-POP FANS WILL GET A KICK OUT OF THE MOVIE

Given PULP’s pedigree in Korean entertainment, it would be expected at this point that their first movie would feature a good dose of Korean stars and callbacks. And if that’s what you’re looking for, you came to the right place. Aside from the fact that the majority of the movie is set in Seoul and Criselda is a K-drama and K-pop fan, Ma’am Chief also features cameos from Do Ji Han, Lee Seunggi, Rolling Quartz, and Yuju that any Hallyu fan can appreciate.

Their scenes lead to some of the best moments of the movie, a fight scene with Rolling Quartz playing in the background being a particular highlight. Ma’am Chief knows its audience and plays it up to its advantage. Also, we need more scenes of Melai and Lee Seunggi together.

THE MOVIE DOESN’T EXACTLY DO SOMETHING NEW TO THE FORMULA

MA'AM CHIEF MELAI CANTIVEROS-FRANCISCO

If you got the vibe that Ma’am Chief was going to be more focused on having a good time than giving Philippine cinema a groundbreaking police story, you’re on the mark. For the most part, the film keeps it safe with a plot that sticks to the main beats of a typical police adventure and a structure that doesn’t stay far from the established troupes. Speaking of the story, it does lean on the generic side of a hero journey to redemption with a plot twist that you can see coming from kilometers away.

Where the movie tries to deviate is its inclusion of K-drama and K-pop elements, though your mileage may vary depending on how big of a fan you are. It’s a fun but at times predictable cop story. Also, it should be noted that the movie is not shy nor subtle about featuring PULP. From product placements, name drops, and even a cameo from Happee Sy-Go, you’re going to know it’s a PULP production.

THE SUPPORTING CAST IS HIT-AND-MISS

MA'AM CHIEF MELAI CANTIVEROS-FRANCISCO

While Melai Cantiveros shines as the lead star, the same can’t be said for her co-stars. Alora Sasam’s Yas serves as a fun partner to Criselda, Karylle steals the scene whenever she’s on screen, and Jennica Garcia’s Joy Salazar brings the heart to the movie, but the rest end up embodying stereotypical characters. In particular, the Filipino tourists Criselda and Yas bring with them feel more like one-dimensional characters than a crew of seemingly random individuals you want to root for.

Bernadette Allyson Estrada, Dustine Mayores, Enzo Almario, Manel Sevidal, and Sela Guia play their roles competently, but it becomes clear that they are there to embody one-note archetypes. From the rich tita, wannabe K-pop idol, vlogger, and more, depth isn’t exactly abundant in these characters.

Overall, Ma’am Chief: Shakedown In Seoul is dumb fun, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a comedic crowd-pleaser that shines in some moments but falls in others. Melai Cantiveros-Francisco earns another W in a movie about a woman who realizes that charging into things head-first is not always the best idea. It combines women’s empowerment through a Hallyu fan’s lens which is interesting. But the movie’s pursuit of a lighthearted Seoul adventure has parts of it feeling like it needs more time to further develop. Still, if you’re looking for a movie to turn off your brain and have a good time, Ma’am Chief is a good option. Just check your expectations accordingly.

Meet Erik Saguiped, the Creative Behind the Reworked and Repurposed Clothing You See on Instagram

line
He's stylish and sustainable!

You might have seen his creations or perhaps bought some of his reworked garments, but now it’s time to learn about the founder of Vintage Junkie Manila and Karma Collective.

Related: This Gen Z Filipino Fashion Designer Is Behind The Structured Silhouettes You See On The Runway

In an era marked by environmental concerns, Erik Saguiped’s reworked and repurposed clothing contributes to the slow fashion movement. Through upcycling pieces, he not only minimizes the environmental footprint associated with new production but also fosters a deeper connection between people and their clothing.

Each reworked item tells a story—a narrative reimagined by the touch of this 34-year-old. From vintage items to recycled garments, it’s no wonder why these unique collections are going viral on social media. You might have seen his creations or perhaps bought some of his thrifted clothes. It’s now the moment to gain insight into the amazing artist behind Vintage Junkie Manila and Karma Collective.

Introduce yourself.

My name is Erv, founder of both The Vintage Junkie Manila and Karma Collective Manila—also a hoarder and a thrifter since 2004.

Could you share the story behind The Vintage Junkie Manila and Karma Collective Manila? What inspired you to begin reworking and repurposing clothing?

I started working and playing with garments back in 2016. Aligned with my favorite hobby, which is thrifting, I began acquiring pieces with significant potential in terms of silhouette and design. My interest grew in expressing my personal touch and style through the pieces I recreated. At that time, “reworked and repurposed” wasn’t as prevalent, and those terms were not commonly used compared to today. Vintage Junkie Manila, launched back in 2017, was created to showcase the items I thrifted and make them available for purchase. What motivated me to continue with Karma Collective Manila is the observation of wastage in thrift shops and rag houses.

How do you approach the creative process of reworking vintage pieces? Are there specific elements or themes that inspire your designs?

Karma Collective’s vision regarding garments involves experimenting with various shapes, silhouettes, and fabrics. I began by creating hand-made patches that are manually embroidered. The intention was to give each garment an imperfect yet well-made appearance in terms of patterns.

Sustainability is a key aspect of repurposing clothing. How do you incorporate sustainable practices into your work?

In my years of operation, achieving 100% sustainability is an ambitious goal. However, understanding where to start and what to incorporate is crucial. I always emphasize consuming less. For Vintage Junkie Manila, I prefer curating pieces that resonate best with my audience while ensuring quality over quantity. The concept is not about buying extensively but buying thoughtfully, acquiring just enough. If a certain piece from your closet or collection no longer brings joy, consider selling it or repurposing it for a Karma piece or another reworked project.

For my reworked projects, I solely use thrifted or discarded fabrics, often destroyed or items that hold no value for anyone else.

In the case of Karma, I maintain a limited production. I restrict the number of pieces I create each month, often just one or two.

Could you share a particularly challenging or rewarding project you’ve worked on and the lessons it taught you about your craft?

Instead of highlighting individual pieces, I prefer to emphasize the production aspect behind them. As I didn’t receive formal training in fashion, working on specific projects offers me the chance to delve into understanding fabrics, how each complements various designs, and the intricacies of fitting for different body types. It’s both challenging and rewarding, particularly when I achieve my desired outcome after multiple attempts.

Which influences or eras inspire your reworked clothing designs, and how do you infuse your own creative touch into each piece?

I was born in the 90s, so I draw inspiration from the things and scenes I grew up with during my younger years, particularly from the mid-90s to the early 2000s. Regarding design, I’m typically drawn to Japanese-inspired silhouettes and both classic and streetwear fits.

The Vintage Junkie Manila and Karma Collective have gained popularity. How do you balance maintaining the brands’ unique identities with meeting the demands of a growing audience?

When I initially launched both The Vintage Junkie Manila, it began as a page focused on buying and selling vintage pieces and garments that I liked. Meanwhile, for Karma Collective, I used that page as a space to showcase projects I created; it served as a creative outlet for me whenever I felt burned out from selling shirts and other garments.

However, after three years, I gradually transitioned Karma Collective into a more personal page. I rebranded the Vintage Junkie Manila page to showcase my thrifting journey, appreciation for various pieces, participation in events, management of our physical store, and to exhibit our creative endeavors like Karma.

Although I continue to periodically post bulk items for sale and curate specific collections to encourage people to find pieces that resonate with them, The Vintage Junkie Manila primarily serves as a platform for our creative and entrepreneurial journey.

Collaboration often plays a significant role in the creative industry. Have there been any memorable collaborations that stand out in your journey so far?

I believe that collaborating with the right people can pave the way for mutual success. In 2018, I attempted to launch a small pop-up and collaborated with one of my co-sellers, hosting a small event in Manila. Through this endeavor, I connected with numerous individuals who shared similar visions, eventually leading me to the Season Pass community. Now, TVJM/Karma shares space with Season Pass in Quezon City, alongside my other partners (Give Me The Loot & Vist MNL).

What advice would you give to individuals aiming to start their own creative ventures, especially in the field of reworking and repurposing fashion?

Go ahead, create. Just start. Discover more about yourself as you begin creating. Be mindful of what you use for your re-creations. The primary concept of repurposing items is to recycle, not to destroy new items and label them as repurposed or reworked.

Starting to create doesn’t guarantee that you’ll love the outcome on your first attempt, and that’s absolutely fine. It’s all part of the journey. Learn from your previous projects; the only person you need to satisfy with your work is yourself. That’s what matters most; everything else is simply a bonus. Enjoy the process!

Social media appears to play a significant role in promoting creative businesses. How do you leverage platforms like Instagram to showcase your work and engage with your audience?

Social media played a vital role in the launch of The Vintage Junkie Manila. It served as a platform to showcase our taste and interests through our curation and process. For Karma, it connected me to the right audience, allowing me to engage with fellow creatives, share experiences, and exchange learnings.

What aspirations and goals do you have for The Vintage Junkie Manila and Karma Collective?

We are turning 6 next month, and a lot has changed. However, our vision has remained the same: to share our love for vintage, whether it’s garments or display pieces, and to assist people in selling and collecting pieces they love. Presently, we are expanding into other vintage items, such as furniture, art pieces, and various knick-knacks. Our goal is likely to establish our own studio, serving as a workshop for Karma and a showroom for TVJM pieces. Additionally, we aim to collaborate more with the right people and fellow creatives to produce work that benefits the entire community!

We Are Family: 8 Life Lessons We’re Taking From Trolls Band Together

line
*NO* spoilers ahead.

Let’s dive deep into the heartwarming wisdom woven into Trolls Band Together, providing insights that resonate beyond the fun fact that it’s a film made for children.

Related: Life Lessons And Hard Truths We’re Taking From A Very Good Girl

Years after Trolls and Trolls World Tour, the film franchise is back with another movie: Trolls Band Together. In this new adventure, we follow Branch, Poppy, Tiny Diamond, and the beautiful Bergens as they find their way to reunite the band. Oh, did we mention there are a lot of long-lost siblings involved?

In the vibrant and whimsical world of Trolls Band Together, where music, friendship, and family take center stage, there are valuable life lessons waiting to be talked about. No, it’s not just another kids movie. Let’s dive deep into the heartwarming wisdom woven into the colorful narrative, providing insights that resonate beyond the fun fact that it’s a film made for children.

A Beautiful Bond That is Sisterhood

With Poppy finally finding her long-lost sister, Viva, their instant and beautiful bond proves that there’s nothing stronger than sisterhood. It’s this beautiful reminder that the connection between siblings, or even your ride-or-die besties, is seriously enduring and everlasting. What got us hooked was how their tiny shared quirks made their relationship rock solid. It’s like a cozy reminder that real connections thrive on the simple stuff, turning it into this one-of-a-kind source of unwavering support and companionship.

‘Brothers Are Friends Who Will Never Leave You.’

Through the adventures of Poppy and Branch, Trolls Band Together reinforces the significance of sibling bonds—particularly brotherhood. The relationships of Branch, Clay, Floyd, John Dory, and Spruce serve as a reminder that, sometimes, your siblings are non-negotiable friends who will stand by your side through thick and thin. Yes, they might be annoying at times, testing your patience in their own unique ways, but within that familial friction lies an unbreakable connection forged from shared memories, secret languages, and an unspoken understanding. This proves that family isn’t just a part of your story; they are an integral chapter, a constant presence in your life.

That said, your family is always something worth fighting for. The lessons learned, togetherness, and unwavering support found within the folds of your family make the journey richer. This emphasizes that amidst life’s challenges, sibling camaraderie is an enduring force that makes every struggle, every triumph, and every shared memory all the more meaningful.

Don’t rush yourself into growing up.

Much like Tiny Diamond in the magical world of Trolls, being the youngest in the family makes you wish you could swap spots with the grown-ups. Totally normal, right? Especially when you’re trying to connect with both the younger and older generations. But here’s the tea: don’t rush into adulthood, and enjoy those sweet moments of being the everyone’s favorite. There’s something special about being treated like a kid when, you’re in fact, still a kid. Because, mark my words, you’ll be missing the carefree days of childhood once you’re officially an adult.

Family fights are normal.

Trolls Band Together didn’t think twice about portraying families realistically. The disbandment of Brozone serves as a life lesson that disagreements are natural within family dynamics, emphasizing that it’s okay to have differences. It’s all about resolving conflicts with love and empathy, recognizing that these challenges contribute to growth both as a group and individuals. As the Trolls face challenges, the overarching theme is that love, patience, and support transcend all obstacles.

It’s important to communicate your feelings.

In moments when you find yourself resonating with Branch’s sense of abandonment and loneliness, the instinct to navigate life independently may kick in. While fostering independence is undoubtedly valuable, it’s equally crucial to recognize that you’re not alone; there are people around you, whether they’re family or chosen companions, who are ready to lend an ear, offer support, and stand by your side.

The movie sends an important message of acknowledging this support system. It’s a gentle nudge to remind yourself that, even in your most challenging moments, communication becomes the bridge to sustaining meaningful relationships. By expressing your feelings and allowing others to be a part of your journey, you strengthen the bonds that make life’s melodies all the more harmonious.

Music mends a broken heart.

In every Trolls film, the healing power of music emerges as a central theme, and Trolls Band Together is no exception. The movie illustrates how, much like a soothing melody, music mends a broken heart. Whether you’re facing challenges, family conflicts, or all those crazy curveballs that life throws your way, there’s nothing like a personalized playlist to fix it.

There’s a difference between leadership and being bossy.

When the oldest sibling is often obligated to look after the younger ones, it’s crucial to recognize that being the eldest doesn’t automatically equate to being the leader. In relation to the narrative of the self-appointed leader, John Dory, Trolls Band Together subtly underscores the nuanced difference between leadership and mere bossiness.

This life lesson encourages individuals to be role models within their families, demonstrating understanding, support, and patience. True leadership within sibling dynamics involves inspiring and guiding rather than dictating. It’s about fostering an atmosphere where every member feels heard, allowing room for shared responsibilities and collective decision-making. By steering away from being bossy, family members can cultivate an environment that thrives on trust, mutual respect, and genuine care for one another.

You are not your sibling, and that’s okay.

There’s a common scenario where younger siblings find themselves lurking in the shadows of the older ones. Take Veneer, for instance—he went through this whole transformation thing in order to be like a spitting image of his sister, Velvet. But here’s the thing: you are not your sibling, and that’s a good thing.

Sure, your siblings can be role models, influencing the person you become, but that doesn’t mean you’re destined to be their carbon copy. So, here’s the deal—take a moment, and let your personalities intermingle. Growing together doesn’t mean becoming replicas; it’s about being your own person, and there’s nothing more beautiful than embracing your authentic self.
