Our Wishlist Of WATERBOMB In Manila Performers—And Everything We Know

line
☀️💦

WATERBOMB is coming to Manila—and oh, boy, do we have a wishlist of performers.

Related: What Went Down At K-Magic Live! With K-Pop Icons Hyoyeon, Yugyeom, and Taemin

Heads up, you’re in the splash zone! WATERBOMB is coming to Manila, and we’re already packing our waterproof bags. Originating from South Korea, the water-themed music festival brings together K-pop, hip-hop, R&B, EDM, dance, performance, and more into one epic summer celebration that both brings the heat and cools you down—with water guns and water cannons.

This year’s WATERBOMB in Seoul saw multiple South Korean artists go viral for being scorching hot on that stage. From Huta (BTOB) to Baekho (NU’EST), Minho and Taemin (SHINee) to Julie (Kiss of Life), these artists made a splash (literally) as they performed in the music festival.

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman also made an appearance at the festival as part of their press tour, armed not with katanas and Adamantium claws, but water guns! WATERBOMB Seoul has been their biggest event yet, and if that’s just a sneak peek of what we could be getting right here in the Philippines, then count us in.

WATERBOMB WORLD TOUR

This year, the festival has gone bigger than ever, as they bring the festival to 11 different countries and even more cities including Japan, Los Angeles, Bali, Bangkok, Manila, and more. With our dislike for the heat and love for music, festivals, and fun, WATERBOMB in Manila seems like a perfect fit. Details such as the dates and lineup have yet to be announced, but we already have a dream lineup in mind, which you can read about below. Let us know who you want to see perform at the festival, too!

BINI

BINI have earned their place as one of the top stars of this generation, and we know they can put on a show in a festival like no other. So as the queens of summer, WATERBOMB would be a great place for them to be.

JOSH CULLEN

@yannifiied naligo ba naman sa stage @josh_cullen_s #JOSHCULLEN #SB19_Josh ♬ original sound – arianne

Doesn’t WATERBOMB and Josh Cullen seem like a match made in heaven? The soloist and SB19 member would totally bring the vibes and the heat.

YUGYEOM

WATERBOMB staple and now pretty much a festival mainstay, soloist and GOT7 member YUGYEOM will hopefully make an appearance in Manila for the festival. His dance skills, idol charisma, and smooth music would be great to witness on that stage.

KISS OF LIFE

After their captivating performance in WATERBOMB in Seoul, Kiss of Life have proven they’ve got what it takes to command a stage and have some fun while being super extra.

HWASA

Singer-songwriter, MAMAMOO member, and Maria singer Hwasa also performed at WATERBOMB Seoul. She was also part of the lineup at this year’s Wanderland music festival, so it’s not a far-off hope to have her return.

B.I

The rapper and singer-songwriter really should drop by Manila again. B.I, or Hanbin, has been booked and busy with WATERBOMB schedules, so hopefully that streak continues and he’s flying back to the Philippines soon to get drenched and perform for his adoring fans.

ATEEZ

@bankaibtch mingi slay @WATERBOMB JAPAN @ATEEZ_Official #ateez #waterbombtokyo ♬ original sound – J

Ateez have performed at WATERBOMB Japan last year, and we think they should once again man the water cannons at this year’s WATERBOMB in Manila.

TAEMIN

The Philippines is a land of Shawols, and Taemin did say back at K-Magic Live! that he would love to return. Maybe WATERBOMB is the way to do it, Taemin!

NCT DREAM

Don’t act like you wouldn’t want to see Jeno or Jaemin drenched and performing at WATERBOMB. The ever energetic NCT Dream is headed over here for a concert in August, but they can also drop by WATERBOMB in Manila. Pretty please!

BIBI

TWICE leader and soloist Jihyo would kill us good if she made her way to that WATERBOMB in Manila stage. Mother, hear our prayer.

All-rounder Cha Eunwoo got everybody in Seoul screaming at his WATERBOMB set where he stepped out of his comfort zone and delivered a captivating performance. If he’s also part of the WATERBOMB in Manila lineup, we want to be in the room where it happens.

10 Pop Culture Moments That Defined The First Half Of 2024

line
Time for a throwback.

These were the moments that captured the zeitgeist and pop culture conversation, for better and for worse.

Related: These Movies From The First Half Of 2024 That Had Everyone Talking

It might be hard to believe, but we are already more than halfway through 2024. Like what do you mean it’s been six months since the start of the year? But regardless, as we reach the halfway point and look back on the year so far, it’s safe to say it’s been a wild ride. And no better way to prove that than with the pop culture moments that dominated headlines and had netizens talking during the first half of 2024.

TBH, pop culture has been pretty lively this year so far. From the mundane to the major, these events were the talk of the town. Some of these you probably still remember, others you forgot. But they all share the fact that these moments radiated big “You just had to be there” energy. Check out some of them below.

OVERPRICED FILM CAMERAS DISCOURSE TAKES OVER PINOY TWITTER

via GIPHY

It was only the start of the year, yet, netizens already had something to talk about when a certain IG shop went viral for selling digicams thousands more than their original price. Understandably, many were not too happy that cameras that could be bought for less on different marketplaces were being co-opted as luxury items that were overpriced beyond belief. It was a New Year reminder that overpriced IG shops are real, but that they also aren’t the only way to buy the niche items you want.

NETIZENS DEBATE THE VALUE OF A 299 PESO ENGAGEMENT RING

In today’s hyper-connected world, even seemingly mundane things can take a life of its own. Take, for example, the 299 pesos engagement ring issue. Back in January, an anonymous post on the Hugot Ni Juan Facebook page went viral. In it, the sender shared how her boyfriend proposed to her with a 299 pesos engagement ring he bought online. She shared how the low value of the ring caused her to second-guess her worth in the relationship. As you can imagine, opinions flew on FB and beyond as netizens debated if a budget engagement ring was a big red flag or not.

JO KOY FLOPPING AT THE 2024 GOLDEN GLOBES

We still cringe just thinking about it. Given his Filipino heritage, there was some excitement in certain corners of the internet seeing Filipino representation on the big stage. Okay, a Filipino host for the 81st Golden Globes, cool. But the moment the show started, Jo Koy faced a tough crowd with jokes that were less funny and more misogynistic. What followed was a heated debate online on whether Jo Koy deserved all the hate. But regardless of where you sit on the aisle, you can’t deny it was a rough one. The comedian has since rebounded somewhat, but the moment will forever be a reminder that even the best of us can flop.

THE HOTTEST ACCESSORY OF 2024? DUCK HAIR CLIPS

@imyounic Ang cuuuuuuteeeeeee 🐥🤣🫶🏻#duckhairclip #binondo #chinatown #fashion #trending #fyp #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp #foryoupage #fy ♬ queenofdisaster budots remix christianacemagsayon – dite_1

There was a time earlier this year when you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing someone wear a duck hair clip. Originating in Baguio before catching fire in the Metro, one of the most unexpected trends of the year was so unserious, yet fun and lighthearted. We don’t blame you if you have spare duck hair clips in your closet. And honestly, you can still wear it even though it’s no longer a trend because it’s still cute.

BINI’S RISE AND RISE

2024 is shaping up to be the year the underrated pop girls finally got their due, namely: Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and Charli XCX. But let’s also not forget the monumental rise of BINI. If there was an award for Breakthrough of the Year, it would probably go to the eight-member P-pop girl group. The perfect storm of good things came together for BINI, and for those of us who have followed the group’s journey for years, seeing them finally get their flowers feels all kinds of correct.

THE SAGA OF SELOS BY SHAIRA

Speaking of pop girls, Bangsamoro Pop Queen Shaira was on everyone’s playlists with the viral success of her hit Selos. You can’t deny it was a bop. But things took a turn when the song was removed from all streaming platforms. It turned out that the song was removed because Australian singer-songwriter Lenka took legal action because Selos sounded too similar to her song Trouble Is A Friend. Selos eventually returned to streaming sites, but the song’s time in the spotlight, and ensuing legal drama, was a moment.

THE DEBACLE THAT WAS THE WILLY’S WONKA EXPERIENCE

@s0ngbaird #THEUNKNOWN || not the unknown scaring those kids 😥 || #glasgow #charlieandthechocolatefactory #wonka #oompaloompa #edit #viral #willywonka #foryoupage #fyp ♬ the unknown serving cvnt – olivia ☆

It was a disaster heard around the world. What was supposed to be a fun family experience based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, albeit unlicensed, in Glasgow, Scotland, was a trainwreck of epic proportions. The videos that flooded the internet in February were the stuff of social media legend as many could not comprehend how bad the event was. From a fake villain called The Unknown to meth lab Oompa Loompa, the memes just wrote themselves. And you know you earned yourself a place in the pop culture history book when you have a Wikipedia page dedicated to you.

THAT UST 7-ELEVEN PHOTO

ust media censorship 7-eleven photo

Remember this? Back in February, ThomasianWeb posted a photo of a group of UST students wearing their Type B uniform while they were in front of a 7-Eleven store. The uncanny resemblance between the uniform’s colors with that of the convenience store’s naturally elicited laughs from netizens. But what should have been a fun joke on social media became a mess after UST’s Office for Student Affairs (OSA) demanded the photo to be taken down. What followed was a domino effect that led to resignations, accusations of campus journalism censorship, and protests for press freedom. To think, this could have all been avoided if some people had a sense of humor.

THE CHOCOLATE HILLS RESORT

This one is a doozy. Back in March, social media was red-hot when a video showing a resort in the middle of the Chocolate Hills in Bohol went viral. The Captain’s Peak Garden and Resort enraged netizens with how it was built on the foot of some hills of a protected natural monument. While the resort was shut down, the whole issue raised important questions of why a building like that was allowed in the first place and the degradation our environment continues to face.

SARAH GERONIMO’S GLOBAL FORCE AWARD

SARAH GERONIMO BILLBOARD

Last March, Sarah Geronimo added another feather in her already heavy cap when Billboard honored her at their Women in Music Awards. She was one of the awardees for the Global Force Award in recognition of her contributions to the global music scene. Not only was she one of the first people to win it, but also the first-ever homegrown Filipina to take home an award at Women in Music.

6 Times Kyler From HORI7ON Gave Global It-Boy Energy

line
Kyler stans, make some noise.

Kyler of global boy group HORI7ON is on the rise to becoming an it-boy of his own.

Related: 5 Times HORI7ON’s Jeromy Totally Served Main Dancer Energy

What makes an “it boy“? It varies from person to person, but generally, looking good isn’t the only criteria. There’s a certain je ne sais quoi that it-girls and it-boys carry, and sometimes, you just know that someone’s going to be your (or the world’s) latest obsession. And there certainly is no shortage of it-boys in the K-pop scene. Think Kai, Mingyu, Jaehyun, Cha Eunwoo, Heeseung, and more. As new K-pop and global groups emerge into the scene, we’re keeping our eyes out for those that are slowly but surely making their way into the public consciousness.

So, without further ado, we are introducing the next rising it-boy in the game, Kyler of Filipino global group HORI7ON. He’s pretty new to this, but trust, like his group, he’s well on the road to making it big—with the right amount of dedication, commitment, and opportunities. Here are a few times Kyler was giving off major signs of being an it-boy—something to look back on when every brand and media outlet are clamoring to feature him.

WHEN HE STARRED IN A MUSIC VIDEO

Kyler’s in his actor era! The idol made his acting debut in Lee Seung Chul’s music video for his single It’s Rainy Day, playing half of a sweet young couple alongside Miracle in Cell No. 7 actress Kal So-won. He portrayed lovesick teen so well that if you didn’t swoon, you weren’t watching. This was also a nice intro to the idol’s acting chops and charm. Drama companies, take note.

WHEN HE WORE THIS FOR HIS NYLON MANILA COVER SHOOT

kyler hori7on it-boy idol

The stylists and designers cooked with this one. Confident enough to flaunt what he’s got, Kyler made waves with this midriff-baring purple suit at our NYLON Manila October 2023 cover shoot. Besides that, he ate up all his other outfits, too. Stylists could put him in boyish yellow coveralls or patterned suits and he would look good in every single fit. If that’s not it-boy material, we don’t know what is.

WHEN HE MAKES THE ROUNDS ON KOREAN SITES AND FORUMS

The face card is accepted as a form of currency in any country, and this Gen Z idol is proof. The many Instiz and even Dispatch posts and reports about his visuals prove the young artist is making headlines not just in the Philippines, but also South Korea—and so early on into his career. He’s earned a multitude of nicknames at this point—is anybody listing them down? Besides OP in the thread above, of course.

WHEN HE MADE IT TO THE TOP HANDSOME FACES LIST

If you’re a K-pop stan, you’re very familiar with this list of Most Handsome Faces. A pretty subjective ranking with pretty arbitrary metrics, but you can’t really deny how deserving those faces on the upper bracket are sometimes. This year, Kyler, a rookie no less, made it to the Top 30, placing at 27, a new entry to the ranks. Here’s hoping he joins many other idols consistently ranking!

WHEN HE WENT VIRAL FOR BEING JUST LIKE US

@auxieu naur coz same 😭 #hori7on_kyler #kylerchua #hori7on #jungkook ♬ original sound – auxi ★ – auxi⚘

Kyler going viral for being a Jungkook fanboy? Sounds about right. The introverted idol keeps a nonchalant face most of the time, but he was caught in 4k being starstruck by idol of idols Jungkook, paying no mind to anything but his idol. Don’t worry, Kyler. We get it. This just makes you more endearing to fans.

WHEN HE DID THE DON’T GO INSANE DANCE

@anchori7on Kalmahan mo lang Kyler ! 😮❤️ #kyler #kylerchua #hori7onkyler #hori7onkyler #anchor #anchori7on ♬ Don't Go Insane – DPR IAN

It’s a crime this video was only dropped on an Instagram Story. The viral Don’t Go Insane dance trend set to the song of the same name by DPR IAN makes it difficult to follow what it wants you to do. Kyler’s entry to the trend, re-uploaded by an ANCHOR to TikTok, has reached a whopping one million views. Several of his dance covers on the HORI7ON TikTok are on among the most popular of the entire account. Millions of eyes are on him, for real.

Has this ever happened to you? If you had to journal the food you’ve eaten over the last couple of days, you’d be embarrassed to show it to anyone because of how weird the assortment of items you’ve munched on are. And you feel even more like a rodent because you’re still not done. There’s just something your mouth is craving, and you can’t for the life of you figure out what it is.

If you’re at your wits’ end and ready to give up on food period, hold it right there. NYLON Manila Picks is here to give you some weird food combos to try before you call it quits. Read on!

Shin Ramyun with Milk and Cheese

“If you are a sensitive stomach girly like me and can’t have a lot of spicy food, but love ramen that kicks, then I recommend adding cheese and milk to it! It lessens that spiciness of the ramen and adds more flavor to it too.” – Kyla Amadora, Art Intern

Cheese Crackers and Choco Mallows

“Salty sweet is a universal killer combo, and this pairing is a perfect example of it. Chocolate-covered marshmallows are generally too sickly sweet. But balancing that with the salty goodness of processed cheese results in an addictive snack.” – Maggie Batacan, EIC

Lemonade with a Dash of Ketchup

“Call me crazy but it actually gives. It’s a combo that I discovered by accident that surprisingly works well together. The tanginess of the  lemonade is still there while the ketchup just gives an umph.” – Rafael Bautista, Managing Editor

Banana with Corned Beef

“I think banana goes well with most beef dishes (even corned beef) especially the 4 caldereta dishes. Have it as dessert if you’re a normal person or as a side dish if you’re feeling particularly adventurous.” – Alannah Mitra, Multimedia Designer

Peanut Butter and Mayonnaise Sandwich

“The sweet and nutty flavor from the peanut butter goes well with the thick and creamy texture of mayo.” – Zean Perello, Video Intern

Tuna and Crushed Biscuits

“I’m not sure if this is new, but this is like a holy grail for a weird food combo on-the-go meal. You can eat it as is, enjoying the combination of the crunchy and soggy texture of the biscuit soaked in tuna oil.” – Zean Perello, Video Intern

Hot Cheetos and Mac & Cheese

“My favorite midnight snack — the hot cheetos’ spice & crunch cuts through the rich & creamy mac & cheese and is perfect if you want to indulge in junk food after a long day.” – Sophia Samala, Ad & Promo Supervisor

Marupok A+ Is For The Marites Who Wants The Tea On *THAT* Viral Catfishing Thread

line
Manloloko son or marupok daughter?

Come for the story, stay for the great acting courtesy of EJ Jallorina, Royce Cabrera, and Maris Racal.

Related: Here’s Why Marian Rivera’s New Movie, Balota, Is More Important Than You Think

If you were on Twitter during the early days of the pandemic, you probably remember the thread about a transgender woman’s experience getting catfished by her ex-boyfriend and cousin. It went massively viral as people couldn’t believe how insane the story was. It read like the plot of a movie. Well, a few years later, that thread has been adapted into an actual movie called Marupok A+ (Where Is The Lie)

It follows Janzen Torres (EJ Jallorina), a hopeless romantic who goes on a dating app and matches with the seemingly perfect Theo Balmaceda (Royce Cabrera). On the day of their first date, Janzen gets ghosted. But the games don’t stop there as what follows is an intricately-planned web of deceit, lies, and catfishing. It turns out that Theo was not real and Janzen was just being catfished by Beanie Landridos (Maris Racal), a sociopathic director who is lowkey unhinged.

After spending the past year screening at international film festivals abroad, Marupok A+ has finally gotten a commercial release in the Philippines. So, is this adaptation of a thread that got us through the first lockdown worth it? While the movie is a fun and juicy time, going beyond that, it leaves something to be desired. We rounded up a few things we love (and didn’t) about the film to give you a better sense if it’s worth your hard-earned bag.

THE LEAD TRIO ACTORS DELIVER

MARUPOK A+

Marupok A+ is driven by its three lead characters: Janzen, Theo, and Beanie. The movie won’t work if these three characters aren’t worth following. Luckily, EJ Jallorina, Royce Cabrera, and Maris Racal hit the mark with their exceptional acting. Jallorina gives Janzen this lovestruck and optimistic energy that makes you want to follow her and her journey to find true love. Admittedly, Janzen makes some dumb decisions on her end, but Jallorina plays the role in such a way that you still want to root for her.

Cabrera embodies Theo who, while being somewhat stereotypical of the nice but dumb male lead part of the common folk, proves to have a lot more depth as he’s both a victim and enabler in this story. Racal, meanwhile, absolutely nails it as Beanie with how she’s so comfortable in Beanie’s quick-witted but manipulating way of thinking.

There’s an unbridled confidence in Beanie that Racal brings naturally to the role. You’re going to love to hate her fr. It can almost feel like this is Beanie’s story more than Janzen’s at times. Beanie is undoubtedly the bad guy, but Racal’s charisma and the character’s significant screen time make it feel like it’s also Beanie’s tale to tell. These actors bring sharp performances as three distinct personalities that work well when brought together. Special mention also goes to Gabby Padilla who chomped her role as Dina, Beanie’s partner-in-crime.

IT’S A FUN STORY

If reading the Twitter thread was already engaging, the movie adaptation retains that energy. Marupok A+ is a relatively short but entertaining dark comedy that keeps up the momentum from start to finish. The movie’s comedic take on most of its events makes for an enjoyable viewing experience. This energy is also aided by Quark Henares’ dynamic directing that keeps the pace moving and tethered to an almost Gen Z vibe that understands the zeitgeist.

The movie gives each lead character their own platform to be the narrator of the story; Janzen with her TikTok videos, Beanie with a livestream, and Theo through an online interview, giving each side their perspective on the unfolding events. Also, Marupok A+ isn’t afraid to go there when it comes to its more mature content and subject matter, with a phone sex scene being a highlight. It’s not hard for Marupok A+ to get your attention as the lie spirals out of control.

THE MOVIE HAS SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT THE WAY THE TRANS COMMUNITY IS TREATED

MARUPOK A+

Beyond the wild ride of the movie’s plot and the thread it was based on, it needs to be said that this is a true story that happened to an actual transgender woman in the Philippines. Until now, the trans community still faces many forms of discrimination. Janzen’s story is just one of many transwomen who deal with harassment, and the movie doesn’t forget this.

If the first half focused more on the actual events of the thread, the second half weaves in the message of the dangers experienced by the trans community and how they do not deserve to be treated like that. Admittedly, the comedic tone does dampen somewhat the seriousness of Beanie’s actions as Janzen’s misfortunes are played for laughs rather than a serious issue.

But at least the film does try to take it home to a higher purpose by the end. It’s a sad reminder that somehow, somewhere, crazy and opportunistic people exist who are willing to go to great lengths to satisfy their prejudices. This movie also teaches us that the community’s fight is also our fight worth supporting.

SOME OF THE CHARACTER MOTIVATIONS ARE QUESTIONABLE

Marupok A+ has something to say about the thin line between lying and having pure intentions. But that doesn’t mean it always translates on screen. In particular, some of Beanie’s motivations and actions are more questionable than calculated. It’s established early on that Beanie’s hatred for the trans community stems from being bullied as a kid. Yet, on multiple occasions, Beanie shows remorse for treating Janzen badly, to the point where she even offers her a place to stay in Manila after Theo breaks up with her (that was on Beanie’s order, btw).

This oscillation between compassionate bestie to transphobic baddie, especially when not explained well, doesn’t really work. Then again, it also plays into the theme of deceiving people and who is right or wrong when only you can trust yourself.

IT COULD HAVE GONE FURTHER WITH ITS CHARACTERS

MARUPOK A+

When it comes to getting the drama of the Twitter thread, Marupok A+ gets the job done. But beyond that, it stumbles when it tries to do more. Yes, we do get some scenes that flesh out the story and an epilogue that explains what happened to the trio since, but it rarely goes beyond that.

There really isn’t a deep dive into who these people are or why they do what they do, leaving it up to the audience to decipher and read between the lines. It could have done more when it came to parts like getting to really know Janzen and letting her story and its important lessons take center stage.

Overall, Marupok A+ is a dark comedy that knows how to have fun. Sure, it stumbles at parts and sometimes doesn’t really go into the danger of certain characters’ actions, but it hits the mark with strong acting and snappy energy. It’s a comedic, mature, and brisk watch about an actual exploitative catfishing experience that isn’t so funny when you think about it.

Marupok A+ is now showing exclusively in Ayala Malls cinemas nationwide.

5 Things You Need To Know Before Watching Deadpool & Wolverine

line
OA meets nonchalant.

Your Deadpool & Wolverine primer, as shared by someone who’s seen the first 37 minutes of the movie.

It only felt like yesterday that we wondered what would happen to Deadpool when news of Disney buying Fox first broke. Years later, we now know. Deadpool & Wolverine, the third entry of the popular Deadpool movie franchise, is coming at an interesting time for the MCU, with the storied cinematic universe currently at a low point.

As the only MCU movie this 2024, the Deadpool hype is undoubtedly real, especially considering the promo tour stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have gone on. Arguably the biggest movie of the year is right around the corner. But before you make plans to see the movie at the end of July (July 24, to be exact), we break down a few key points you should know about the film, coming from someone who had the chance to watch the first 37 minutes of the movie. And yes, we’ll keep the spoilers to a minimum.

IT’S HAS A LOT OF CALLBACKS, CAMEOS, AND REFERENCES

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE

If you’re well-versed in Marvel lore, then you’ll find Deadpool & Wolverine to have a good dose of easter eggs to find. From callbacks to the MCU to references from the X-Men comics, cameo appearances, and more, the movie holds its love for the lore on its sleeve. By the way, keep an eye out for the Marvel Studios logo trailer at the start of the movie, you’ll spot a cool surprise.

YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE MCU TO GET STARTED

With dozens of movies and multiple timelines and universes, it can admittedly be hard to get into the MCU these days if you aren’t an ardent follower of the films and shows. But Deadpool & Wolverine smartly makes itself accessible to casual viewers while still making sense in the wider MCU. There’s no need to know everything going into the movie as it’s relatively explained to the viewer. But, if you really want to be prepared, we suggest you brush up on Loki (at least season 1), Deadpool 1 and 2, and Logan.

IT’S STILL R-RATED DEADPOOL

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE

For anyone worried that Disney would pressure the team to create a more PG Deadpool, rest assured, the R-rated madness is still there. From blood, guts, violence, cursing, crass humor, and more, Deadpool is still Deadpool and the Merch with a Mouth still has a mouth. Bonus points also for turning Wolverine a lot gritter than we’ve seen of him in most of his movie appearances.

THERE’S MORE TO DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE THAN JUST BEING AN EXCUSE TO BRING BACK WOLVERINE

You would think that with all the turmoil the MCU is facing, Deadpool & Wolverine would break the 4th wall to make it so that Deadpool was here to save them all and be the “Marvel Jesus”. But there’s so much more to Deadpool & Wolverine than that. Yes, there are jokes at the MCU’s expense, but the movie is not just fan service to bring back Wolverine or be a landing pad for the X-Men to join the MCU.

It has a story that goes beyond cameos galore and R-rated violence. Deadpool and Wolverine are two people who are going through things, both internally and externally. What those are, we don’t want to spoil. But ultimately, it’s a movie about friendship and broken people finding their place, purpose, and spark once more.

WHAT YOU’VE SEEN IN THE TRAILERS WAS JUST A FRACTION OF THE MOVIE

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE

Let’s just say this, most of what you’ve seen in the trailers were in the first 37 minutes of the movie. There are still a lot of surprises and narrative developments waiting to be uncovered.

Through The Booming Beats, Filipina DJ And Creative Baby Diwata Finds Their Peace With The Femmes And The Queers

line
She's a star.

With their unrelenting beats and eclectic style, Manila-born DJ and creative Baby Diwata is carving out a safe space for women, queers, and allies in the underground Hong Kong scene.

“I think, at the end of the day, everyone is looking for the same thing—home.” For a lot of members of marginalized communities, especially those in new places, finding somewhere to belong is a tall order.

Safe, welcoming spaces for all sorts of interests and niches, particularly for women and the LGBTQIA+ community, have long been few and far between. But as times change and people seek out to do good and change things in whatever ways they can, more and more communities are brought together, taking up space they rightfully deserve.

Born and raised in Manila, Baby Diwata, or Aisha, moved to Hong Kong to be with their mother just a few years ago, with a college degree under their belt and an inclination to take their next major life step in the vibrant streets of Hong Kong.

The 26-year old DJ and multidisciplinary creative doesn’t just bust out beats on the decks in the underground nightclubs in the city. They’re also a model, image maker, photo and video producer, with a background in film and photography. Baby Diwata is also now an event producer at Möth Agency, a queer and alternative DJ agency and events collective they recently launched with their friends in Hong Kong.

“I enjoy exploring all these art forms and not sticking to one,” they explain. “I never want to compartmentalize myself. I want to use what I know and keep finding out what I’m good at.”

CULTIVATING COMMUNITY

Baby Diwata is driven by a desire to diversify the electronic music scene in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, and to create safe spaces for women, queers, and allies. Though a creative since they were young, Baby Diwata started their sonic journey in Hong Kong, where, as they started exploring the art of it all, they noticed the lack of diversity in the scene.

“I always thought that there was something missing in the booming, underground music scene of Hong Kong,” they share. “It didn’t take much for me to notice that it was heavily male-dominated.” From musicians to event organizers, men made up a large portion of the DJ and event scene, and it wasn’t often as diverse a space as it could be. Women and queer individuals were underrepresented, and it definitely wasn’t just owed to a lack of interest.

“When I began DJing, I always saw it as something that was bigger than me.” Taking over the decks isn’t just a way for them to pursue something they wanted to do—make the music they wanted to dance to—but also a signal to women, queers, and allies that this space was one where they would be safe and welcome, free to move to the beats and be who they are.

TAKING A BEAT

It’s not an easy task to take the stage and perform in front of a whole crowd of people. Baby Diwata in all their glory is a confident creative, as eclectic and electric as their music. But that’s not always the case.

Baby Diwata admits they grew up with social anxiety, and never thought they’d be able to take the stage in any way. Their confidence ebbs and flows, at an all-time high one moment, low the next. But at the end of the day, they share, re-centering yourself and recognizing you deserve to be confident in your identity and taking up your own space is important.

“I personally am still trying to learn it. It requires so much grace and patience with yourself. It’s really not easy for someone who spends most of their time second guessing themselves.”

Going back to why they pursue their craft and push for diversity and inclusivity in the underground music scene in Hong Kong in the first place is something that keeps them grounded. “This really is something bigger than me. I’m not only doing this for myself, but for all the women around me.”

Baby Diwata only started DJ-ing in front of crowds last year, and to say they were nervous is an understatement (“I felt sick to my stomach.”). But, like many of those who dared to dream and worked to hold those dreams in their hands, they pushed through despite everything that could possibly hold them back.

Baby Diwata shares a passage from their journal, written before they were set to take the next big step in their creative journey—an entry commemorating the familiar feeling of something in your gut that’s just urging you to go forth and live your truth, as loudly and proudly as you can.

“I haven’t felt this much of a push to pursue something in a while. A true urge/drive from your core, to be great at something new. Tonight is my first step. I am so proud of myself, and I am so thankful for those who helped me get here and trusted in my talent. I want to remember that I’m not only doing this for the little kid performer in me, but for the community of femmes and queers who are waiting for their moment to dance.”

Here’s Why Marian Rivera’s New Movie, Balota, Is More Important Than You Think

line
Protect the vote fr.

It’s actually a big deal having a superstar like Marian Rivera star in a movie about the realities of elections in this country.

Since its inception, movies have always been used to entertain. But the medium can also be used to educate or raise awareness for social issues. Case in point: Marian Rivera’s newest movie, Balota. Fresh off her return to acting with Rewind, the MMFF 2023 blockbuster that is the highest-grossing Filipino movie ever, Marian is back on the silver screen. This time, she stars in her first-ever Cinemalaya movie, Balota. But more than just an exciting new chapter in Marian’s career, Balota also speaks to a reality faced by many in elections in the country.

IN HER CINEMALAYA ERA

We’ve known for a while that Marian Rivera will star in Balota. And recently, we got our first look at the film with the drop of the teaser trailer. In it, we see the actress, who plays a school teacher named Emmy, looking disheveled as she runs into a forest while holding a yellow ballot box. Balota, which is set to premiere this August at Cinemalaya, puts the focus on elections in the country and the violence that sadly follows it.

The story centers on a land-grabbing tycoon and a former male sexy actor who are locked in a tight race for mayor of a small town. On election day, the results are extremely close, causing violence to erupt in the town. This causes Emmy, a teacher who serves in the election, to hide in the wilderness with a ballot box that holds the last copy of the election results. Joining Marian Rivera in the cast are stars such as Sassa Gurl and Esnyr Ranollo, with behind-the-scenes pictures showing them participating in protests. The movie, meanwhile, comes from the mind of award-winning director Kip Oebanda, the filmmaker behind Liway and Bar Boys.

PROTECT THE VOTE

Elections are often a heated time in the Philippines, and sadly, our history has its fair share of stories about election-related violence. In 2023, COMELEC reported that 19 people were killed during the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections. It’s a reality that elections aren’t always peaceful in the Philippines, and often, it’s teachers who are exposed to these dangers as they are usually assigned to watch over elections in schools around the country. More than 2,500 teachers reportedly refused to serve as poll watchers during the 2023 barangay elections, with many citing shootings, intimidation, and other threats. Teachers sadly bear the brunt of election-related violence and have little in the way of protection.

Balota isn’t just a movie Filipino cinephiles should have on their radar, but a film highlighting the violence people face during elections, especially in the provinces. It’s a conversation that should happen and one you don’t often see in Philippine media. With Kip Oebanda’s pedigree as a storyteller, with his past movies having poignant messages on issues facing the country, and Marian Rivera’s acting prowess and star power, we might be getting a movie that delves into the strength of teachers during perilous times, the power of your vote and a free and fair election in the face of harassment, and helps bring the discourse to dirty politics and the need to protect teachers who do so much during elections.

Balota will screen at the 2024 Cinemalaya Film Festival this August 2 to 11.

You’re not hallucinating—that really is Harvey Bautista on all your screens. After the 20-year old made an impactful comeback with Zoomers (2024), the actor didn’t let up, booking roles left and right, some on a couple of the biggest series currently on Philippine media.

Making his way through the industry as an emerging (more like re-emerging) young actor, Harvey currently portrays several roles all at once, with more to come. If you want to keep up with the rise of Harvey Bautista, look no further. We’ve rounded up some of the actor’s current work so you can have your fill of media to watch. Check out the list below.

JIGGS (ZOOMERS S2)

Reprising the role that brought him to greater heights over the last year, Harvey returns as Jiggs on the second season of Gen Z drama Zoomers. In this season, the Zoomers kids spend their last summer before college together, and drama, romance, and hijinks ensue. This season, the romance between Jiggs and Hope (Criza Taa) continues, and he’s ready to take it to ~official~ levels. Zoomers can be streamed on YouTube.

WES (HIGH STREET)

A rising Gen Z actor joining one of the biggest Gen Z dramas of the year? Sounds about right. Said rising actor playing a complex, twisty-and-turny character whose motivations and allegiances are hidden? Sounds even better.

Harvey joined the cast of High Street, the sequel-slash-second season of youth-oriented thriller drama Senior High (2023-2024), as Wesley, Sky’s (Andrea Brillantes) coworker who helps her with her investigation into Gov. Acosta’s crimes. Wes, however, has a hidden agenda—and a secret identity to go with it. You can watch High Street on iWantTFC or on the Kapamilya Channel on weekdays 9:30 PM.

PERCY (PAMILYA SAGRADO)

In one of the more surprising news about Harvey’s schedule, the actor joined as a guest on action-drama Pamilya Sagrado (2024-present), joining fellow young actors Kyle Echarri, Grae Fernandez, Jeremiah Lisbo, and more. He plays Percy, a recruit to the brotherhood who knows a dark secret.

FRIENDLY FIRE

If those series aren’t enough for you, just you wait, because Mikhail Red’s new esports film Friendly Fire is about to hit cinemas. Harvey Bautista plays gamer Ryan in a film about a girl, Hazel, getting the chance to represent an esports team and prove her talents and skills in high-pressure gaming competitions. Friendly Fire will be screened in cinemas starting October 23.

DEADLINE

In an interview with NYLON Manila, and through some social media posts, we learned that Harvey is set to star in a slasher-horror film about teenagers who need their wits and each other to survive. No further news has been released, but trust, we’re seated.

THE FOUR BAD BOYS AND ME

Gen Z talents take the stage in this Wattpad novel-turned-streaming movie. Joined by Anji Salvacion, AC Bonifacio (whom he co-stars with on High Street), Brent Manalo, and more, Harvey Bautista is set to star in rom-com The Four Bad Boys and Me, based on a Wattpad book by user blue_maiden. His role is yet to be disclosed, and the movie has yet to start filming, so you still have time to get yourself acquainted with the story.
