The Round-Up: Get Into The Week’s Newest Bops

line
"It's your birthday on repeat, birthday on repeat-eat"

There’s nothing like getting new music from BINI, ENHYPEN, and more, in the same week no less.

Related: The Round-Up: Get Into The First Batch Of Bops For July

It’s time for a new music check-in. Check out the new tracks that we’ve been bumpin’ to recently.

CHERRY ON TOP – BINI

We fear this will be on repeat in our heads for the next month.

SAY – KEHSI

The vibes are just too strong to resist this bop.

XO (ONLY IF YOU SAY YES) – ENHYPEN

The title track for ENHYPEN’s pop-heavy second album is a romantic-pop fantasy about the boys willing to do anything for you, but only if you allow them to. Kings of consent.

WOMAN’S WORLD – KATY PERRY

That was fun. We can’t wait for what else Katy has in store for her new era.

KLAXON – (G)I-DLE

It’s a (G)I-DLE summer, and it sounds kinda fun and carefree.

SALBABIDA – BEN&BEN

Ben&Ben in their island girl era? Not really, but it is a sweet song for that special someone who you consider your life vest.

LIA – ZILD

Inspired by the OPM rock bands of the late 90s and early 200s, this jam is Zild’s take on the harana as told through the perspective of someone who’s already swept up in love

BASTA’T ALAM KONG TAYO 1 – INIGO PASCUAL

The vocals and upbeat jazzy production? *Adds to playlist*

BALANG ARAW AY MAPAPANGITI – GRACENOTE AND ZEL BAUTISTA

This collab is for the single and broken-hearted people out there to remember to not be afraid to love, whether it be for the first time or again.

SIRENS – PAOLO SANDEJAS

This moody alt-pop track revolves around finding home in a person in the most spontaneous ways.

PATI NG ULAN – JIKAMARIE

This short but sweet jam preaches the benefits of the love language of physical touch.

BAGGAGES – ZEKE ABELLA

Yes, this is the same Zeke Abella on TikTok. ICYDK, he makes music, and it’s pretty fire.

UNDERGROUND – F5VE

If you want to know what quality hyperpop music sounds like, this song has you covered.

7 Reasons Why We’re Seated For The Philippines’ Participation At The Olympic Games Paris 2024

line
Gunning for gold.

With 22 athletes, and a handful of firsts even before the Games begin, the Philippines’ participation in this year’s Paris 2024 Olympics is cause for a lot of excitement.

Related: Here Are All The Filipino Athletes Competing At The 2024 Paris Olympics

Light the torches, wave the flags high! The biggest sporting and athletics event in the world is upon us again, this time in Paris, France. The 2024 Summer Olympics, or simply Paris 2024, will be held from July 26 to August 11, exactly one hundred years since 1924 Paris, which signaled a new era in the Games henceforth.

The Philippines’ participation at the previous 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games was historic, as weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz brought home the country’s first gold medal and our athletes brought home four medals total in the country’s best performance yet in a single Gaes. This year, 22 athletes are jetting off to Paris hoping to secure more medals and make their country proud.

Whether you’re a big sports fan or not, there’s no denying the impact the Olympics have on, well, everything, from politics to culture. Millions upon millions of people are eager to see the best of the best of sports and athletics compete, break records, and earn medals in the newest edition of the Olympics. But for us, here are just a few reasons why we’re counting down the days until this year’s Games begin.

100 YEARS AT THE OLYMPICS

This year marks a whole century since the Philippines’ debut at the Olympic Games in 1924—in Paris, as well, which we should take as a great sign. Prior to that, we’ve only been participating as part of Spain or the US. It wasn’t even until 1929 that the International Olympic Committee recognized the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation (now the Philippine Olympic Committee) as the country’s National Olympic Committee.

Now, 100 years later and 14 Olympic medals later, our Olympic team heads to Paris to compete in the Games, hoping to add new medals, new records, and new achievements under their belt and under our flag.

A BIG, DIVERSE DELEGATION OF ATHLETES

Sending in 22 athletes across nine sports, 7 men and 15 women (the most we’ve ever had compete), we’ve got a stacked delegation of representatives this year. From born-and-raised Filipinos to Filipino-Americans who chose to fly under our flag, our athletes totally represent just how diverse, driven, and dedicated the Filipino people are.

PINOY PRIDE

We don’t just mean pride in terms of waving the Philippine flag. Boxers Nesthy Petecio and Hergie Bayacdan, openly lesbian and a trans man, respectively, are both athletes bringing pride to the nation.

The two are both headed to Paris 2024—for Nesthy, her second run at the Olympics, and for Hergie, his first time qualifying for the Games—blazing a trail for all Pinoy queer athletes and aspiring athletes, and punching down barriers along the way.

SWIMMING IN THE SEINE

@zozomccormack Replying to @Mariechen Paris 💩 protest update from the Seine on June 23rd !! will parisians actually go through with it? will the Seine be ready for the Paris Olympics? will President Emmanuel Macron swim in it? exciting stuff over here 💩🥴 #parisprotest #parisseine #seineparis #seineriver #emmanuelmacron #parisolympics2024 #parisolympics #olympics2024 #parisian ♬ original sound – ZOE IN PARIS 🇫🇷

It’s not technically involving the Philippines directly, but the whole Seine controversy is still cause to be seated if only to see how it goes. If you’re chronically online, then you know about the whole “Poo Protest” and the controversy surrounding the river Seine in Paris.

TL;DR: The Paris government insists the Seine will be ready before the Olympic Games start, but Parisians have been saying that there’s no way the polluted Seine will be clean enough for events such as the swimming leg of the triathlon to be held there (oh, and they didn’t actually want the city to host the Games), and that their taxpayer money has been wasted. We can only wait and see as to how the Parisian government will handle the whole debacle.

THREE FIRSTS HELD BY WOMEN

Though a long time coming, Filipino women’s representation at the Games have grown in recent years, and the significance of Hidilyn Diaz’s and Nesthy Petecio’s victories at 2020 Tokyo, in respective sports that are popularly perceived to be “men’s sport” no less, is not lost on people. It’s not enough that this year, we’ve sent in the most female athletes in the history of our participation, no—some of these athletes are record-breakers already.

First Female Rower At The Olympics

Twenty-six year old Joanie Delgaco is a rower, SEA Games gold medalist, and the first Filipina rower to make it to the Olympics. She’s the fourth Filipino rower to make it to the Games after Edgardo Maerina , Benjamin Tolentino Jr., and Cris Nievarez, and the only Filipino delegate in this year’s rowing category.

First Filipina Gymnast Springing Her Way To Paris Since 1964

The young Aleah Finnegan was born in Missouri to a Filipina mother and American father. She was part of the US Women’s Gymnastics National Team (2019-2021), and actually wasn’t looking to further her professional career until she got an offer to represent the Philippines at the 2022 SEA Games. Now, she’s secured a slot at Paris 2024, the first Filipina gymnast to carry the flag since Maria-Luisa Floro and Evelyn Magluyan in Tokyo 1964.

First Filipino Fencer At The Games Since 1992

In 1992, fencer Walter Torres competed in the individual foil event in Barcelona. Thirty-two years later, after much hard work and determination, and an injury that almost hindered her chances to compete at Paris 2024, 22-year old Samantha Catantan becomes the second Filipino fencer and first female fencer to make her way to the Olympic pistes.

EVA LE QUEEN GLOBAL ALL STARS

5 Reasons Why We’re Manifesting An Eva Le Queen Win On Global All Stars

line
Global Domin-Asian.

Another Filipina queen is going global with Eva Le Queen repping the Philippines and Asia in the inaugural season of Global All Stars.

Related: 5 Times Marina Summers Took Pinoy Pride To The Next Level On Drag Race UK Vs. the World

The cast of Drag Race Philippines season one is something else. No matter what place they finished in, the queens have gone on to be stars in their own right. Case in point: Eva Le Queen becomes the second Drag Race PH queen to represent the country on the international stage. RuPaul’s Drag Race recently revealed the cast for the first-ever Drag Race Global All Stars, which will see 12 queens from different Drag Race franchises compete in a global edition of All Stars for the chance to be inducted into the Drag Race Hall of Fame.

Among the queens of the inaugural season is our very own Eva Le Queen. Following Marian Summers’ exceptional run at UK vs. the World season 2 earlier this year, it’s now Eva’s turn to show the world what Philippine drag is all about. Admittedly, Eva has some big shoes to fill, but we have a feeling she won’t let us down. As we wait for the show’s premiere this August 16, scroll down for a few reasons why we’re #TeamEva.

SHE BRINGS THE LOOKS

EVA LE QUEEN RU PAUL'S DRAG RACE GLOBAL ALL STARS

INSTAGRAM/RUPAULSDRAGRACE

Don’t get it twisted, Eva Le Queen is a look queen. During her season, Eva turned out some impressive looks. We still think about her Marge Simpson goes to Malacañang ensemble now and then. Eva delivers polished looks that combine opulence with a dark edge she’s known for. From her clothes, wigs, impressive mug, artistry, and more, Eva gives what needs to be given. Just look at her Filipino-coded promo outfit designed by Leo Almodal. She ate that. Bonus points for the star-shaped dumbbell. We also can’t wait for the Filipino culture she’ll infuse into her All Stars looks.

SHE HAS THE COMEDY CHOPS

EVA LE QUEEN GLOBAL ALL STARS

We all know RuPaul loves a funny queen or at least someone who can make her laugh. And we think Eva is the queen who can do that. She may have not won the challenge, but her Snatch Game performance is the stuff of legend. Tampalpuke will always be that meme. She’s a well-spoken queen that’s sharp to the touch. We hope this quick-wittedness and confidence translate well to acting and comedy challenges.

SHE HAS CONFIDENCE FOR DAYS

EVA LE QUEEN GLOBAL ALL STARS

INSTAGRAM/RUPAULSDRAGRACE

RuPaul always tells queens to not let their inner saboteurs get the better of them and just be their true selves on the main stage. Eva should have no problem doing that. She has grace, poise, confidence, and self-assuredness, while also not being afraid to let her guard down and have fun. The way Eva Le Queen carries herself like a true queen, add to that her ability to work well both alone or in a team, will aid her in a high-pressure competition like All Stars.

EVA IS LOWKEY SLEPT ON

EVA LE QUEEN GLOBAL ALL STARS

Sure, Eva has zero challenge wins under her belt, but that doesn’t deny the fact that she’s a talented queen. She made it to the Top Four regardless and earned her fair share of high placements throughout the season. The seasoned queen and businesswoman has more tricks up her sleeve since her time on Drag Race Philippines. And, she’s also a great performer with a background in performing arts to boot. Eva La Queen doing well on Global All Stars, which we hope she does, will make for the best surprise to her naysayers.

SHE’S OUR ASIA REP

EVA LE QUEEN GLOBAL ALL STARS

INSTAGRAM/RUPAULSDRAGRACE

Eva Le Queen has something to prove at Global All Stars. Not only is she our Philippines representative, but also Asia’s as the only Asian queen on the show. And you know we’ll always root for our fellow Asians in a global competition. Eva is here to show the world again the power of Asian drag. As she puts it in her Meet The Queens interview, “It’s high time for Asian drag excellence to be in the Hall of Fame. I’m representing the Philippines but at the same time Asia in general.”

Fly High: The Power Of Adventure With Chezka Carandang

line
It’s not just about the destination.

They say the real treasure is the friends we made along the way, but Chezka Carandang shows us that it’s also about the “you” that you become during the travels.

Related: Tell the Story: The Power of Storytelling with Samantha Lee

Confidence is an ever-elusive beast. For some of us, our best days are a coin toss between feeling like superhuman and feeling like you should’ve been taken out with the trash – and there is no in-between. For others, the only setting available on our mood is the latter.

In moments when we’re feeling alright (maybe even good) about ourselves, our egos can still be pretty fragile. The smallest comment can send us tailspinning into a world of hurt. But sometimes discomfort isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, going out of our comfort zones can be the very thing that spurs us to change for the better.

Chezka Carandang for NYLON Manila July 2024 Cover

First Officer Chezka Carandang, who is also a former beauty queen and content creator, chose a life of service when she became a pilot. In this way, she discovered her passion and strong sense of self. When she puts herself on display in her content, you can feel the authenticity and can’t help but feel inspired to seek your own path.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE CONFIDENCE…

As an active gender equality advocate, Chezka confidently speaks up about her identity: “I’d like to believe the essence of being gay essentially is breaking tradition, refusing to live according to society’s unwritten rules and living according to your own terms.” This unapologetic way of being is something we can all use a little of in our day-to-day lives.

Of course this is easier said than done. Especially if you are surrounded by people who aren’t necessarily your number one supporters. As a pilot, Chezka finds herself in the midst of many male colleagues. But this does not deter her.

“By believing in my own capabilities as a woman, knowing that women in male-dominated fields can be just as good as their male counterparts, and staying headstrong in unlocking my potential, I stay courageous and confident,” Chezka announces.

Beyond gender stereotypes, we can learn from Chezka’s belief in herself. Knowing your own mind, heart, and capabilities can keep us grounded as we reach for our dreams. In the face of people bringing us down, we don’t even need to go as far as clapping back. Just knowing yourself quietly can be enough.

… BUT NOT ALL THE TIME

While confidence, ideally, comes from within, it can be easier to be sure of yourself when there’s a solid support system around you. In the case of members of the LGBTQIA+ community, like Chezka, the struggle can still be felt: “Liberty means being able to live freely, without fearing judgment or being pressured into conformity.” While many people have shifted into an air of acceptance, there are still some challenges that queer persons face in today’s society.

Being an ally means standing up for people whose rights and liberties are being trampled on. But your efforts don’t have to go to such ultimate extremes all the time. Especially when discrimination is quiet, or internalized – meaning there is no visible threat or enemy – we can still be allies to the people in our immediate circles by welcoming them with open arms.

“The moment I received my mother’s acceptance was also the moment I accepted my identity,” Chezka recalls. “Knowing that my mother wholly accepts me for who I am and who I love is really freeing.” Support can be about challenging authority and systems of oppression. But it can also take the form of warmth, kindness, and affirmations.

SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS

Beyond acceptance and rebellion, we also need to be able to see different members of our community simply existing. This is where Chezka feels media representation comes in: “When we see more lesbians in Philippine media, we create spaces where we are included, heard, and seen.”

the power of adventure with chezka carandang cover story

Vest dress by @latriniteatelier, Cut-out bra by @latriniteatelier, Floral pumps by@smfashion

Gen Zs have done a lot in this regard. According to Chezka: “Access to social media has enabled Gen Zs to use their voice to amplify the cause of inclusivity. And it goes beyond the digital screens. Today’s Filipino youth are more proactive than ever in taking the message to the streets. But we don’t stop there. We still can keep fighting for the cause until inclusivity is institutionalized. For as long as one person in the community experiences exclusion, the fight continues.”

It is through Chezka’s strong advocacy that we can see how she powers through the struggles of being a queer woman in a male-dominated field. When you can summon the strength and willpower to fight for the plights of others, that determination naturally rubs off on you. This is one path you can take to discovering your own hidden power.

the power of adventure with chezka carandang cover story

If you are a person who struggles with who you are currently, Chezka invites you to embody the spirit of adventure: “Take time to understand yourself at your own pace, and surround yourself with a support system that you believe can accept your identity.”

BELLE MARIANO BELIEVE CONCERT

6 Highlights From Belle Mariano’s Believe Concert That Solidified Her Pop Star Status

line
Don't sleep on musician Belle.

Pop star Belle is one of our favorite Belle Mariano variants, as her Believe concert proved.

Related: 7 Beloved Highlights From Belle Mariano’s First In-Person Concert

Most people celebrate their birthday usually with a party or a get-together with family and friends. But most people aren’t Belle Mariano. Last July 13, the Gen Z star celebrated her birthday with a sold-out show at The Theatre at Solaire. The guest list? Oh, just hundreds of her devoted fans who packed the venue and countless more who watched via the livestream.

It was a night of magic as Belle became a pop star in the making. Belle, together with a few special guests, made the evening memorable for what may be her grandest concert yet. Araneta Coliseum for her next solo concert? Fingers crossed. In the meantime, check out below some of our favorite highlights from Belle Mariano’s Believe birthday concert.

THAT DANCE NUMBER WITH DONNY

DonBelle goes 2-0 for dance numbers that broke the internet. Set to the timeless (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life, Donny and Belle recreated the iconic Dirty Dancing dance number that had the crowd at Solaire and beyond shook. Donny entering from the audience, the lift, the steamy glances, a new chapter of DonBelle lore was written we fear.

DONBELLE GIVING ALL THE FEELS

With Donny on the piano, he and Belle slowed things down with touching duet covers of songs that hold a special place in their hearts, and their fans’. From BINI’s Huwag Muna Tayong Umuwi to the theme song of Can’t Buy Me Love, You’ll Be Safe Here, we won with this segment.

BADDIE BEHAVIOR WITH DENISE JULIA

This baddie-on-baddie behavior is everything to us. Looking pretty in shades of pink and purple, Belle Mariano and Denise Julia ate down in this sultry collab that combined both their vibes.

BELLE IN HER POP STAR BAG

Aside from performing her music, Belle also covered some of the biggest pop hits of the moment during her concert. She covered, among others, Tyla’s Truth or Dare, Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso, and Jungkook’s Standing Next to You, with the dance break included. First of all, her taste! Second, she chose a diverse set of hits to flex her talents.

THE MOIRA DELA TORRE COLLAB THAT WAS A LONG-TIME COMING

The vocals? Just what the doctor ordered. The fact that Belle has been a vocal fan of Moira’s for years and they finally got to share the stage made it even better. And bonus points for the contrasting white and black ‘fits.

BELLE’S NEW ROLE? AERIAL PERFORMER

P!nk who? We only know Belle Mariano. It isn’t easy to do all that with the silk, so props to Belle (and her core strength) for putting in the work to give us a show.

One of the many struggles of being an artist and creative is knowing when to stop. When conceptualizing a piece of art, and subsequently bringing that idea into reality, it’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling like you need to keep adding more layers and complexity in order for it to be effective.

This delicate dance can apply to many things, including and especially, the artwork that is you. As an artist, you know that skill progression is going to be a never-ending battle between your creative appetite and your ego. As a human being, however, while we are aware that learning is a lifelong endeavor, it’s so easy for us to beat ourselves up for not matching our idealized selves. Sometimes, we get so lost in the hustle that we forget to take a moment to appreciate ourselves in the moment—ourselves as living, breathing works of art that will always change.

It’s this mindset of continuous progression, and providing a platform for those who wish for their voices to be heard and their experiences to be witnessed, that director and scriptwriter Samantha Lee embodies with her approach to her work. With the narratives she helps to craft, she helps us realize the truth of ourselves and of others as works-in-progress.

The idea of the self can be a very sensitive topic. We have the tendency to view it as a final destination or a MacGuffin that will solve all our problems once we can firmly grasp it in our hands. But what if that mythical, perfect version of us isn’t something we should be searching for, but rather something we constantly create? In this area, Samantha may have the right idea. When it comes to self-actualization, she says, “[It] isn’t something that you can necessarily find, it’s something that you build and shape for yourself.”

If we saw ourselves as more malleable, and explored the freedom that that view can give us, it would relieve the pressure we often feel to have ourselves figured out. Samanthat admits, “I see myself as a work in progress. And I think that we are all constantly in a state of progress. Our identities can evolve. Our labels can evolve. Who we love is definitely going to change as we grow older.”

The subject of who we love is another such sensitive topic, especially for members of the LGBTQIA+ community. It can be difficult to figure out this part of yourself on your own, let alone when there are people out there telling you you’re wrong for something that’s just instinctual. This is one of the reasons Samantha does what she does. In her words: “The hope is that life is even a little bit easier for people to walk down this path.”

A key part of encouraging people to go after what’s in their hearts is sometimes showing them that their experiences are shared. That’s why, in all of her projects, Samantha aims to give opportunities for queer creatives to shine: “There are so many more stories to tell, with a lot of people capable of telling them! We’re just out here waiting for our chance.”

THE TRAP OF “KNOWING”

tell the story samantha lee director storytelling

Relatability and authenticity are both extremely important to Gen Z. This is an area where social media can play the dual role of both an ally and an enemy. On the one hand, with people sharing stories and memes we feel seen, heard, and validated. Sometimes, however, this can give us a misguided sense of feeling like we know everything there is to know about something after reading a couple of articles or forum posts. This includes giving ourselves timelines – if there are people on social media my age who are successful, why can’t I be?

“To have this pressure to know who you are, at such a young age is a great fallacy, because that only limits you and who you can be,” Samantha muses. This sentiment can be extremely powerful. It allows us to adapt to new circumstances and try on different hats and traverse different paths, which should give us a wider perspective of ourselves and the world.

Gen Zs notably have a very globalized mindset, thanks in no small part to the development of information technology. With today’s generation holding the title of the “woke generation”, sometimes we can be led into thinking that we have our allyship basics down pat. But sometimes what gets lost in the politicking and debating is simpler than we realize.

“I think the biggest misconception about the queer community – or people who are different from you – is that you have more differences than what you have in common. The work that I’m trying to do with my films is to show all these different worlds: so that people realize that I have something in common with this group who I totally knew nothing about,” Samantha explains.

Unfamiliar things can make us nervous, and admitting to not knowing things can be scary. But the thing about admitting to the unknown is that it keeps us upon to new things, leaving room for growth and understanding.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

Generation Now has taken plenty of steps forward when it comes to having compassion and curiosity for marginalized groups. But Samantha believes that there is more that we can do: “I always say that the change needs to be systemic—the fight isn’t just for better representation but a holistic acceptance of women and the LGBTQIA+ community in our systemic structures that ensure that we have agency over our own lives.”

Having the ability to control the general direction of your life is a privilege that not everyone has, even in 2024. And this is something that we should actively pursue. For everyday, and for yourself, empowerment isn’t really about perfection. It’s not like you only get to live the life you want once you’ve reached this dream version of yourself. You can actually start now.

As Samantha puts it: “Self-acceptance for me isn’t purely about your SOGIE or your identity, it’s the ability to love your entire self- both the good and the bad. It’s about making peace with the fact that you will always hold light and darkness inside you and that’s okay.  It’s an on-going, ever-evolving process, and there are days when it’s easy and days when it’s hard.”

Run The World: The Power Of Versatility With Bethany Talbot

Slaying outside from within.

First impressions and appearances can be important, but Bethany Talbot reminds us that there’s power in holding fast to what’s inside you.

Social media is truly a double-edged sword. On one hand, it can be a source of information and inspiration – showing us ways of thinking and being that would have never occurred to us otherwise. On the other hand, it’s like stepping into a funhouse of mirrors, except there’s nothing fun about emerging with a warped sense of self from the illusions of perfection we are bombarded with.

The need to appear happy and thriving on our social accounts is a phenomenon that should be explored all on its own. For the majority of us, the choice to opt out is as easy as signing off. So what happens if we enjoy the sense of power and control that having a fully-customizable curated outer image gives us? And what if that was your job?

Athlete and model Bethany Talbot knows a thing or two about what it means to have to be judged based on what’s on the outside. But this 23-year-old multi-hyphenate queen demonstrates how it’s possible to feel confident in having a strong sense of self, in spite of that self not being fully put-together yet.

ACCEPTING YOURSELF

“It is important that I am able to live openly and authentically to who I am and to the rest of society,” Bethany firmly announces. This is the dream – to be able to be yourself and show that off to the world without fear. But how does one get to that point? How does one find the courage to be even if it goes against societal norms?

On a personal level, being yourself is easier when you’re surrounded by those who support you. “I knew within myself that my family and friends would always love me no matter what, and that was a really big factor in always feeling peace within my own identity. I always felt that I had a safe environment to be able to fully express myself, and my loved ones are an important part of helping me reach this point,” Bethany shares.

On a larger scale, it’s important to realize that not everyone has the privilege of having such an accepting support system in their immediate vicinity. As an evolved society, we as individuals can and should aim to create a sense of safety for everyone around us. When it comes to acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community, of which Bethany is a proud member, she expresses optimistically that “everyone has the potential to fully accept the LGBTQIA+ community and make them feel like a normal part of society. These people who aren’t there yet, no matter what generation, just need to make a better effort at learning more about the community and also getting to know individuals who are a part of the community.”

ACCEPTING THE TRUTH OF OTHERS

Living in the age of a highly interconnected society means dealing with people. A lot. And those people, whether we like it or not, will have opinions about who we are and what we do. Not all of them are nice to hear, either. As a model and social media content creator, Bethany definitely has to deal with more than her fair share of commentary. “Because this type of career involves us putting a lot of ourselves out there, we are very susceptible to feedback from the audience, whether that may be positive or negative.”

The high levels of input from strangers and peers can be daunting. But Bethany powers through it by sticking to what she knows to be true about herself. As she puts it, “We can’t really control how people react to us, but we can control how we react to them. It can get frustrating to see misjudgments about yourself, but I just try to stay grounded to who I am and what my principles are.”

How do we know if we have character or if we’re just being stubborn? The balance between accepting constructive criticism and having the confidence to make decisions based purely on your own sense of right and wrong is a difficult one to get right. With the added difficulty of having every move and every pose scrutinized by an invisible crowd, it may even seem impossible.

There will always be noise, and the struggle between the choice to accept it or ignore it. Sometimes accepting this reality can help us move forward with what we want to do. Taking this a step further, Bethany advises us to trust our instincts and loved ones, “As long as you truly know yourself and you’re surrounded by people who support you fully, it gets easier to navigate the negativity around this type of career.”

OPENNESS AND CHANGE

You can never please everybody. As the saying goes: Haters gon’ hate. And learning to be at peace with this fact will dramatically increase your mental health. However, even people who are far along on their healing journeys probably stop to think: Wouldn’t it be easier if everyone just learned to accept each other for who they are and just minded their own business? Yes. Absolutely. And this generation has taken a few hopeful steps in this direction.

“I think every generation tries to do a better job than the previous one by fixing problematic norms and practices. I believe that Gen Z has done an amazing job at this especially with advocating for inclusivity,” Bethany marvels as she contemplates the progress that Generation Now has made. “Especially in this age of the internet, Gen Z has been using social media to create powerful messages and advocate for things they believe in.”

But the struggle isn’t over. In fact, as times change, people will. Their concerns, their values, their behaviors, are all subject to change. This means, to an extent, the fight will never truly be over. But that’s okay. Bethany maintains her optimism in the face of this never-ending path, “I think Gen Z is very open to changes and criticisms, and they will keep on finding ways to better improve themselves and society.”

More than just finding ways forward for society, Bethany also has words of wisdom to impart for those finding ways forward for themselves: “Learn to be comfortable around these uncertainties and doubts, and know that life will forever be a  journey of self-discovery.” Change is inevitable. While we can approach this fact with a sense of dread, life is perhaps more interesting if we choose to look at it with a sense of excitement for all the different versions of us that we have yet to create.

ICYMI, ENHYPEN Has A Sweet Surprise For Filipino ENGENE In Their New Album

line
We love the dedication.

A special treat and easter egg from ENHYPEN to their Filipino fans in the CD-only version of Highway 1009.

One thing about ENHYPEN, you will never catch them lacking in the showing-love-to-their-fans department. Their fandom, ENGENE, is well-fed by the group with all kinds of content. And that continues with ENHYPEN’s latest release, their second studio album, ROMANCE : UNTOLD. For the Filipino ENGENE who ordered the physical album, they have a little surprise waiting for them as further proof of ENHYPEN’s love for their fans, and it’s not just a piece of the members’ clothing included in each album.

FOR ENGENE 🫶

ROMANCE : UNTOLD marks a new chapter for ENHYPEN as it is the beginning of the new ROMANCE series, which is set to explore the story of seven boys who vow to protect their love at all costs. Fittingly enough, the group’s second LP includes a fan song called Highway 1009, the first for ENHYPEN. But if listening to the track online already felt like a sweet ode to their fans, the alternate version takes it to another level.

The physical edition of ROMANCE : UNTOLD has an exclusive CD-only version of the track called Highway 1009 (Narr. Ver). It’s pretty much the same song, but the lyrics in the ending have the members sharing wholesome messages in seven different languages, including Tagalog. “Kung wala ka, wala din ako. Magkasama tayo habambuhay, sa bawat hakbang,” narrates SUNOO in a win that isn’t just limited to Filo ENGENEs who are SUNOO-biased.

HEESEUNG IN HIS PRODUCER ERA

What makes it even better is that Highway 1009 was produced by HEESEUNG, which marks the first-ever song he’s produced for the group. “When we were working on the album’s tracklist, I thought, ‘This is it—this is my chance,’ so I made a demo with a friend of mine and played it for the label,” said the K-pop idol on the song’s origins in an interview with Weverse Magazine. Once they heard the demo, they liked it and HEESEUNG continued working on the track.

At one point, Highway 1009 reached a somewhat complete state. But it became the song that it is today when it was chosen to be a fan song. As such, all seven members were credited in the lyrics as they gave the song an even more personal touch to express their love for ENGENEs.

As HEESEUNG shared, “I actually had the rough lyrics and a working title already, but it was just lucky it was chosen to be a fan dedication song. I thought we could convey our feelings better to our fans if everyone’s point of view was included, so the other members ended up contributing lyrics, too.” “HEE-roducer” definitely snapped here, and he hopes the track to be of comfort for ENGENEs when they listen to it. “I hope ENGENE listens to the song and picks up what we wanted to say, and that they can clear their mind, even if just for a moment, and feel good.”

More than just another “PHILIPPINES!!! 🇵🇭🇵🇭 🇵🇭” mention in K-pop, it’s nice seeing that among the dozens of languages that represent their global fanbase, ENHYPEN chose to include Tagalog among the seven featured in the song. Filo ENGENEs stay winning.
