Miss Universe Voice For Change: Winners, Advocacies, And What It Means In The Grand Scale Of Things

Louder, queens.

Michelle Dee made it to the Top 10 at Miss Universe and bagged the Voice For Change Award—but what does the category really mean?

(Trigger warning: this story mentions suicide and mental health issues.)

Miss Universe Philippines 2023 Michelle Marquez Dee may not have bagged the Miss Universe title, but the multi-hyphenate queen scored a valuable win by being a Gold Winner of the Voice for Change video contest.

Voice for Change is a new, special section of the 72nd Miss Universe pageant, where candidates share their advocacies and the causes they champion in a three-minute video. It’s a collaboration between the Miss Universe Organization, jewelry company Mouawad, and media platform CI Talks that aims to unite “diverse voices in a harmonious call for action.”

While the award has no bearing on who gets the title, it signifies a movement to expand the definition of “beauty” and push for delegates to be not just “beauty queens”, but harbingers of change.

Along with Michelle Dee, the other Gold Winners of the Voice for Change Award were Miss Universe Angola Ana Bárbara Coimbra and Miss Universe Puerto Rico Karla Guilfú Acevedo. Delegates’ submissions were evaluated with certain criteria such as delivering a compelling case for the cause, solution quality, message delivery, memorability and credibility, and creativity and innovation. The winners were decided by the Selection Committee as well as through fan voting. Curious to see what the winners championed? Read on.

ADVOCACIES IN THE SPOTLIGHT

In the Voice for Change videos, delegates talk about their chosen social issues and sectors, discussing problems faced by people and how they can be addressed or alleviated. Ten winners were selected in the Miss Universe preliminaries, and three Gold Winners and seven Silver Finalists were announced in the finals.

In her video, Michelle Dee talked about autism acceptance, inclusivity, and empowerment, a cause near and dear to her heart. Michelle has been a longtime advocate for autism awareness and mental health awareness and education—her lifelong mission. Having grown up with siblings on the autism spectrum, she works with non-profit group Autism Society Philippines (ASP), dedicated to working towards inclusivity of people on the autism spectrum in employment, providing them support, and creating opportunities for all.

Twenty-three-year old Miss Universe Angola Ana Bárbara Coimbra tackles a growing challenge in Angola—that of malnutrition, caused by high inflation. Ana calls for the provision of accessible, low-cost, nutritious food to families and children. By creating a project model at an ecological school in Angola, Ana emphasizes the benefit of teaching people to grow their own food, “even on a small scale.”

Miss Universe Puerto Rico Karla Guilfú Acevedo somberly emphasizes the need to “destigmatize emotions, empower communities, and spark a global movement for mental health awareness and support” in her video about suicide prevention and mental health care.

Moreover, Silver Winners include Brazil’s Maria Brechane, Chile’s Celeste Viel, Lebanon’s Maya Aboul Hosn, Singapore’s Priyanka Annuncia, South Africa’s Bryoni Govender, Ukraine’s Angelina Usanova, and Zimbabwe’s Brooke Bruk-Jackson.

These delegates tackled a wide range of sectors and issues, such as empowering the deaf community through learning Libras (Brazilian Sign Language), struggling immigrant children and families, Lebanon’s education crisis, human trafficking, gender-based violence, the mental toll of war, and financial inclusion in the informal sector, respectively.

PERFORMATIVE OR POSITIVE CHANGE?

Every year, Miss Universe brings to the fore a conversation on Miss Universe and, in general, pageantry’s negative effects on society in relation to exploitation, feminism, beauty standards, and self-esteem. Regardless of the “inclusivity” beauty pageants seek to incorporate, people still call for its total abolition, while some call for changes within its system. On the other hand, some people also highlight the positive changes and platforms pageants offer, one of which is Voice for Change.

What Voice for Change enables Miss Universe contestants to do is amplify calls for change through increasing awareness, support, or even funding for certain causes and advocacies. At present, what we could do regardless of our stance on beauty pageants is take notice of these calls, and critically examine why and how such issues should be addressed—how can we support or address the advocacies these women are bringing to our attention?

The candidates have proven that they’re willing to champion a cause, provide solutions, and work with marginalized sectors. It’s pretty inspiring. But the challenge is longevity and sustainability—is it enough that these issues are highlighted on the Miss Universe stage?

Now that the competition’s over, how is Miss Universe, the delegates, sponsors, and the public (read: we) going to move forward and act further on these causes brought into the spotlight or the causes we advocate for ourselves? It’s a question that doesn’t have an easy answer. But if the Miss Universe organization is truly committed to change, we expect them to walk the talk.

Pinoy pride showed up at Miss Universe 2023 in more ways than one.

After a years-long pageant journey, all roads finally led to Michelle Dee competing in Miss Universe 2023 last Sunday morning. And it’s clear that her training prepared her for the moment as she walked, stomped, and devoured her way to a Top 10 finish. While she didn’t take home the crown, MMD did make her country proud and proved once again that the Philippines is and will continue to be a force in Miss Universe.

But even if Michelle wasn’t able to take home the crown, the coronation night, which was held in El Salvador, still had its moments that had Filipino netizens talking on social media. Pinoy energy was very much present at Miss Universe 2023. Scroll down to see a few of them.

If there was a strong theme that ran throughout the coronation night, it was seeing double. Aside from the fact that netizens pointed out how Miss Universe India, Shweta Sharda, looked like Pia Wurtzbach, many also said how Miss Universe Nicaragua and newly-crowned Miss Universe 2023 Sheynnis Palacio’s evening gown looked very similar to the Marc Rancy gown Maris Racal wore to the ABS-CBN Ball earlier this year. The detailing and blue sleeves and train gave us deja vu, a fact Maris herself recognized.

R’BONNEY GABRIEL’S FINAL GOWN

R’Bonney Gabriel has never been shy about wearing Filipino designers as her homage to her Pinoy roots from her father’s side. So, it only felt right that she wore a Filipino designer for her final walk as Miss Universe. She tapped Rian Fernandez, who also designed R’Bonney’s gown for the preliminary competition, to make her final walk gown.

The result was a stunning bold creation with an enchanting silhouette that was adorned with red crystals. The look was topped with a headpiece that completed the grand aura of her final time as Miss Universe. A Fil-Am winner wearing a Filipino gown for their final walk? We know that’s right. And let’s also not forget how every queen wore heels from Filipino brand Jojo Bragais, the official footwear of Miss Universe.

MICHELLE DEE’S EVENING GOWN

Michelle took no prisoners with her run at Miss Universe. Aside from making it to the Top 10, being one of the Voice for Change gold winners, and taking home the Spirit of Carnival award, she also gave us a jaw-dropping black Mark Bumgarner creation. Aside from the fact that it was the only black gown in the Top 10, the dress paid homage to cultural icon Apo Whang-Od with its detailing mimicking the tattoo design from Kalinga. Michelle more than just stood out from the competition, she gave her flowers to a legend and the long cultural significance of tattoos in the Philippines.

CATRIONA GRAY BEING A MOOD

Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray was once again back as a backstage host for Miss Universe, where she added her commentary to a competition she is a champion at. Her presence gave us a Pinoy POV for the coronation night. And throughout the evening, she gifted the internet with many moments that had us cheering and going, same. For starters, she voiced the VO for Michelle during the swimsuit portion of the night. Then, she channeled the shock of netizens with her reaction to seeing MMD not make it to the Top 5. At this point, she needs to be a main host next year.

A FILIPINO ON THE SELECTION COMMITTEE

Another year, another Filipino judge. It wasn’t just Pinoys as contestants and hosts, there was also one on the judges panel. Included in this year’s selection committee was Dr. Connie Mariano, a physician born in the Philippines but moved to the United States with a glistening resume that includes being a White House physician under multiple US presidents.

In the high-stakes world of the Miss Universe pageant, the pressure and competition might mean that there is no room for camaraderie or friendship among the more than 80 queens competing. But that is far from the truth as, at the end of the day, it’s the bonds and sisterhood that prevails among the delegates. And when it came to Miss Universe 2023, one friendship stole many people’s hearts, that of Miss Universe Philippines Michelle Dee and Miss Universe Thailand Anntonia Porsild.

Since these queens met up in El Salvador, it’s been nothing but bestie behavior between these SEA sisters. The fact that they are going to Mexico together next as part of their Miss Universe duties means that the bond is far from over. Even if Michelle and Anntonia didn’t take home the crown, we have a strong feeling they’ll be taking home a wholesome friendship. Scroll down for a few times netizens fell in love with their friendship.

PORDEE UNIVERSE

You know you’re that loved of a duo when you get your own hashtag. Michelle and Anntonia have been so close and receiving so much support for their fans, a fact both queens have recognized, that they have their own hashtag, #PorDeeUniverse, in their bid to become the next Miss Universe. It is derived from their last names (Por and Dee) and is a symbol of why we’re here for this duo.

MICHELLE COMFORTING ANNTONIA DURING CORONATION NIGHT

Real friends will be there for you in your highs and lows. As such, after Anntonia finished first-runner up at Miss Universe 2023, Michelle, who herself made it to the Top 10, was spotted giving Anntonia a warm hug that looked all kinds of comforting.

REHEARSAL BESTIES

We all know the feeling of how scary doing something alone for the first time can be, especially when you’re halfway across the world. It’s a good thing that Michelle and Anntonia have each other throughout their Miss Universe journey. In the lead-up to coronation night, the two often spent a lot of time together, from rehearsal preparations, official duties as Miss Universe delegates, seatmates on the bus, and more. There was even a time when Anntonia used Michelle’s outfit as a blanket. Our favorite moment though was when they both fangirled over Michelle’s Yadom. We love how comfortable they are with each other.

In case you didn’t know, Michelle and Anntonia have nicknames for each other as Michelle refers to Antonnia as “mommy” while Anntonia calls Michelle “daddy”. And like any supportive daddy, MMD shared in her Instagram broadcast channel that she was holding Anntonia’s bag as she waited for her. Mommy and daddy better not get a divorce.

IN-HOUSE PHOTOGRAPHER

If you search “two pretty best friends” on Google, you’ll find a photo of these queens. Aside from the fact that they look so good in their photos together, they also know how to take each other’s photos, such as when Anntonia shared some snaps on IG and wrote in the caption that “daddy” Michelle was the one who took the pics. If our friends don’t take photos like how Michelle does Anntonia, then we don’t want them.

Barrier-Breaking Team Up: James Reid and B.I Just Want You To Dance

line
When you and your bestie are both music superstars.

James Reid and B.I share the story behind their collaborative track Jacuzzi, how their friendship started, what it’s like working together, and more.

What happens when two talented singers, songwriters, and producers decide to come together for a joint slay? For James Reid and B.I, you get the song Jacuzzi. The feel-good pop track brings together Filipino and Korean talent to create a playful crossover of house and pop. Brimming with dynamic synths and upbeat electronic elements, the song encapsulates the spirit of a club anthem and how spending time with each other is filled with excitement and luxury in a never-ending loop of fun. It all makes for a fitting team-up and a natural extension of two artists who went from being fans of each other to good friends.

FROM FANS TO FRIENDS

In the small but growing list of friendships between Filipino stars and K-pop idols, James and B.I’s bond is one that has won many fans over with how seamless it is. True enough, when James first met B.I, the connection was instant. “We met backstage at a concert in Seoul, and I was happy when he asked me to perform with him for his concert here in the Philippines,” recalls James.

JAMES REID AND B.I

As a fan of B.I, James was understandably excited to meet the soloist. The feeling is mutual for the idol. “James is very kind, sweet, and considerate. Our first meeting was nothing but smiles, and all I can recall is the warmth of that moment,” shares B.I. Even if the two met as established stars, there was nothing but mutual respect from both sides.

“B.I is so talented and such a rockstar, but at the same time very humble and down to earth,” expresses James. Add B.I, “James Reid is an incredible artist. I used to sing his songs and this time, I had the opportunity to collaborate with him – I had so much to learn from him. He’s not only a kind and cherished friend but also a dedicated professional in his craft.” Naturally, their mutual stanning soon led to their professional and personal relationships blooming, which then led to one of their first songs together.

HAVING FUN AT THE JACUZZI

While James and B.I are no strangers to professionally working together, Jacuzzi hits different because it serves as one of the first times the two combined their musical prowess in one track. On first listen, Jacuzzi sounds like if the idea of fun was turned into music. And that was the memo for James the moment the inspiration for the track arrived to the multi-hyphenate star.

On using music as an avenue to have fun, James elaborates, “Capturing how enjoyable music is was what was on my mind when writing this song. I wanted to make a simple, fun, banger that captures just that and sitting in a jacuzzi, laughing in the moment with the people I love. Life can be difficult and serious, but sometimes, it’s just a jacuzzi.”

With James visiting South Korea more frequently, he was able to cross paths more often with B.I. Soon, a request for collaboration came calling. “I was struck by the refreshing and highly contemporary quality of his music,” says B.I on James asking him to do the song. “I’m glad to say that our collaboration has been nothing but upbeat and energetic.”

JAMES REID B.I

As two maestros when it comes to production, the duo found working on Jacuzzi a breeze. “His verse fit the energy of the song perfectly and I’m grateful he was able to feature on this song despite his busy touring schedule,” effuses James. “It was a smooth and quick creative process thanks to the amazing beat and melody James crafted,” voices B.I.

Collaborating with Grammy award-winning producer DJ Flict, who James describes as an “icon”, the track was mostly recorded in Los Angeles, with B.I sending over his recorded verse to complete the song. With B.I’s versatility in singing and rapping and the two’s common background in R&B, there was no friction when it came to combining their talents in a nearly three-minute bop.

It goes without saying then that James and B.I have nothing but kind words for each other for their collaborative moments. “It’s been a true pleasure, and the process has been smooth sailing thanks to his accommodating nature. I’m eagerly anticipating our next collaboration,” muses B.I. Adds James, “I’m honored to be able to collaborate with B.I on our projects, and it’s been fun because the two songs are so different. It’s been a really inspiring experience.”

NOTHING BUT LOVE FOR THE PHILIPPINES

As exciting as this team-up is, the moment is also the latest addition to B.I’s memorable moments in the Philippines. Whether it be holding concerts in the country or breaking the internet with his unexpected attendance at the Vogue Philippines Anniversary Gala, it seems that B.I can find himself at big moments in Philippine pop culture. It’s a connection to the country the musician feels and appreciates.

“Every time I fly over, I’m greeted by a large crowd of fans, and the concert atmosphere is truly amazing. I always feel very excited whenever I have the chance to go there. Just talking about it now makes me eager to perform in the Philippines as soon as possible,” he gushes.

JAMES REID B.I

On what he has to say to his passionate Filipino IDs, B.I shares, “I wish for all of you to be well-nourished, well-rested, and in good health. As for myself, I’m determined to complete my album preparations promptly and head over to the Philippines. Here’s to many more enjoyable and unforgettable moments we’ll share together in the future!”

And just like with the memories he makes with his fans from the Philippines, it’s his IDs from around the world that make B.I’s latest world tour so fun. “So far, the tour has been joined by countless fans, and it’s been a true blessing to share this journey with them.” Speaking of traveling, while album and tour preparations have limited how much B.I has been able to get those frequent flier miles, he did have a special moment on his many adventures this year. “I can confidently say that one of the most unforgettable moments was when I traveled to Busan for a song camp and had the opportunity to create the song I had envisioned.”

MUSIC THAT TRANSCENDS LANGUAGES

The mutual love B.I and Filipinos have for each other, as well as his collaborations and friendship with James Reid, speaks to a bigger picture of how the divide between Asian artistry continues to get narrower and narrower. Aside from the song being one of the first times James and B.I. have worked on the same track, it also marks the first partnership between music labels Cross Ratio Entertainment and Careless, in a joint regional collaboration aimed towards Asia and beyond. It showcases once again music’s ability to transcend language and borders.

JAMES REID B.I

As B.I sees it, the collaboration is their way of showing how music will always be there to bring people together. “Despite our different backgrounds and languages, I hope that music can bring us together as one and bring joy and happiness to our listeners. It’s a wonderful opportunity to explore the latest music scene in another country, and as more artists join forces for collaborations, I have no doubt we will witness the creation of high-quality music leading to successful outcomes.” At the end of the day, when it’s a bop, it’s a bop no matter what language or form it may come in.

Sophia Laforteza Is An Official Member of KATSEYE, The Debut: Dream Academy’s New Global Girl Group

Hello new bias.

She’s done it! Sophia Laforteza has made it to the end of The Debut: Dream Academy, and is officially a member of HYBE x Geffen’s new global girl group KATSEYE!

Related: 10 Things You Need To Know About Dream Academy’s Sophia Laforteza

After months of preparation, performances, training, judging, voting at The Debut: Dream Academy, Filipino artist Sophia Laforteza is officially a member of HYBE x Geffen’s new girl group that’ll take over the world! And not to toot our own horn, but we knew with utmost confidence that she would make it.

The only Filipino to make it to the Top 20 of The Debut: Dream Academy (out of hundreds of thousands of applicants from all over the world) has rightfully earned herself a spot in the six-member lineup of KATSEYE. For this group name, Dream Academy asked the contestants what they thought of the options. They wanted a revolutionary name that reflected their diversity, passion, and of course, their girl power.

In the much-anticipated livestreamed finale of the survival reality series, Dream Academy announced Sophia (Philippines) as the first member of the group, as well as Lara (USA), Yoonchae (South Korea), Megan (USA), Daniela (USA), and Manon (Switzerland) as the final members of HYBE x Geffen’s new global girl group KATSEYE.

After slaying the unreleased original song Dirty Water with fellow contestants Lara, Samara, Manon, and Ezrela, and being the top pick of two out of three of the judges, there was little doubt this girl wasn’t going to make it to the very end. After the livestream, it was even revealed that Sophia placed first in both the early voting and the live voting!

Consistently ranking in the top spots all throughout the show, Sophia’s been a fan favorite at Dream Academy. Her talent, skills, and drive have allowed the world to see her shine—singing and dancing her way through each mission with so much passion, so much heart, and so much strength. With this dream come to life, Sophia’s journey to success and stardom is only beginning.

LIVING THE DREAM

Hailing from a talented performer family and getting her start in music and dance at an early age, Sophia’s got the skills to back her determination up. She’s been praised by evaluators and her fellow contestants for her stable vocals, stage presence, performance, star quality, and dedication to her craft. Besides that, she’s confident, charming, earnest, and proud of her Filipino heritage. How could you not root for her?

Her parents Godfrey Laforteza and Carla Guevara Laforteza have been the most proud and supportive, cheering her on all the way—especially when she won!

The talented young Sophia has consistently shown her prowess not just in music and performance, but also in being a member of a team. People on social media as well as judges have referred to her as having the qualities of being a “leader,” and from her TikToks, videos, and conversations with other contestants, it’s clear that the trainee is ready to take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and make history as she joins the very short list of Filipino idols making waves all over the globe.

“I’ve worked so hard to be here,” Sophia tearfully said. “I appreciate everybody who has voted for me, who has been supporting me since day 1.”

THE NEXT STEP

It’s been a while since 20 girls started this journey, and while it’s been an emotional ride, the bond all these contestants talked about forming will surely hold. Their performance of All The Same showcased how diverse and talented the contestants were and the sisterhood that they formed.

With Sophia, Lara, Yoonchae, Megan, Daniela, and Manon, HYBE x Geffen’s new global girl group is set to embark on a new journey not dissimilar to the one they just completed. KATSEYE will continue their training as a six-piece and debut in 2024, with further preparation being documented for a 2024 Netflix series to be directed by Nadia Hallgren, produced by HYBE, Interscope Films, and Boardwalk Pictures.

While both their hardship and success have been—and for some, will continue to be—broadcasted to such a large audience, the story of Sophia, Dream Academy, and this new global girl group is one of inspiration—barrier-breaking, culturally significant, and especially to them, absolutely life-changing. We can’t wait to see what’s in store.

A Peek Inside The Gaming World Of Sharlene San Pedro

line
Just pro streamer things.

Actress, game streamer, and more, Sharlene San Pedro is bringing together the worlds of entertainment, content creation, and gaming.

Related: 7 Times Sharlene San Pedro Proved She’s A Girlboss Gamer

You probably know Sharlene San Pedro as a seasoned actress, singer, vlogger, TV host, and more. But aside from her nearly two decades in the entertainment industry, the actress and content creator has also been spending her time in the world of gaming, specifically livestreaming video games like Call Of Duty Mobile. On Facebook alone, the star has amassed a following in the millions thanks to her gaming livestreams that have been going on since the pandemic. But more than just a hobby or side job, Sharlene’s passion for gaming is her latest extension of showcasing entertainment and content creation for the here and now.

SLIDE JUMP TO GAMING

Like many Filipinos, Sharlene San Pedro loves video games, specifically mobile games, with COD Mobile being her go-to favorite. It’s a fact she immortalized when she posed with her phone and a character from CODM in her grad photos when she graduated from AMA University last year.

SHARLENE SAN PEDRO

But it was only during the early days of the pandemic that Sharlene considered the idea of streaming games. “When the pandemic started and lahat ng trabaho ay huminto, nag-iisip ako ng way to connect with my supporters and dun na po nag start lahat,” she recalls. As much as her acting career pushed her to try on new roles, Sharlene’s desire to try something new pushed her to try gaming livestreams.

Pretty soon, Sharlene built a strong following online for her gaming content as she charmed many viewers with her killer combination of skills and personality. “Sharlene the gamer/streamer is competitive and fun to hang out with, and relatable.” Watch any of her livestreams, and you know she’s spitting facts. And don’t get us started on her gaming room

THE GAMER LIFE

While livestreaming games isn’t an inherently difficult task, building, retaining, and growing an audience is. In a world where hundreds, if not thousands, of streamers are vying for audiences’ attention, it takes an extra special charm to stand out from the crowd. But as Sharlene sees it, her success in gaming isn’t a sign that she’s better than the rest, but that she’s doing her job of making people feel good with her content.

“Never ko naisip or pumasok sa isip ko na standout ako among all video gaming creators out there,” the actress and streamer says matter-of-factly. “I just think na we all have our own unique style because at the end of the day for me hindi talaga mahalaga na stand out ako. Ang mahalaga sa akin is yung mapasaya ko yung viewers ko and magkaroon sila ng kasama sa mga times na makakadaan sila sa livestreams ko.”

SHARLENE SAN PEDRO

INSTAGRAM/SHARLENESANPEDRO1

It also does help that she’s had years of experience dealing with all kinds of people, especially online, thanks to showbiz. It’s a skill that she finds particularly useful as she applies it in her livestreaming content. “Malaking bagay na matagal na ako sa industriya ng showbiz because it really made my skin thicker to the point na I know how to turn destructive criticisms to a constructive one.”

In between all of this, she still juggles multiple hats, from her acting career to her YouTube channel, and more. To some, the pressure, demands, and responsibilities of one job can be overwhelming. But for Sharlene, she sees it as more a walk in the park. “Hindi ako nahihirapan ibalanse yung acting, content creation, and livestreaming because gusto ko yung ginagawa ko. Naniniwala ako na pag totoong gusto mo yung ginagawa mo, hindi ito magiging mahirap sayo.”

ALL-ROUNDER

Sharlene isn’t the only celebrity who has tried their hand at gaming livestreams. While her inherent celebrity got heads turning, there’s also the stigma of being seen as another “artista” playing video games. Yet her celebrity roots aren’t a curse for Sharlene, but a bonus. “I feel like it’s a huge help na nanggaling ako sa ibang industry before ako pumasok sa gaming community.” Her time as a game streamer taught Sharlene the valuable lesson of each medium having its own audience. “Nung pumasok ako sa gaming industry, naramdaman ko na back to square one ako because magkaibang magkaiba yung viewers dito sa gaming.”

The people who loved Sharlene the actress may not watch Sharlene the gamer, and she’s perfectly fine with that. “I remember nung mga first two streams ko, madami talagang nanunuod kasi si Sharlene “the artista” ito eh. Pero habang tumatagal, hindi na nanunuod yung iba dahil I understand na hindi lahat ng taga suporta ko sa showbiz ay into gaming.” She didn’t let her name carry her to the W. Sharlene’s massive gaming platform is a product of her grind and determination. “Lahat ng nanunuod sakin ngayon at sumusuporta sa pagiging gamer ko ay naniniwala akong na-gain ko because of the hardwork na pinuput ko at pag-grind ko nitong mga nakaraang taon at ngayon.”

LEVEL UP

Gaming, along with her work in entertainment and content creation, will remain a core part of who Sharlene San Pedro is. The multi-talented star is showing the world that seemingly unrelated fields can come together seamlessly and compliment each other. And her endeavors are about to go even higher now that she’s a signed talent for Tier One Entertainment. “It is such an honor to be lined up in their powerful roster of talents,” she says on being with Tier One. “I know that I’m in good hands at alam ko na they will push me to reach my full potential in terms of gaming and content creation.”

Needless to say, expect to see more of girlboss gamer Sharlene, As she teases, fans can look forward to a lot of new projects. “Expect more relatable content, collaboration with other gaming content creators, and more projects under Tier One Entertainment.”

More importantly, Sharlene’s continued success in the gaming space serves as yet another reminder that women can and do belong in gaming. Sharlene is kicking ass in gaming, something she hopes other women can do, too. “I know that what I do right now will inspire and break barriers by showing that gaming and as well as content creation are for everyone. I feel like this is a powerful statement telling more women to jump in and own it.”

Michelle Dee | Philippines

It’s a bird? It’s a plane? No. It’s Captain Michelle Marquez Dee coming out and over. Miss Universe Philippines is starting strong in an amazing creation by Michael Barassi. Each thread intricately woven into the ‘solihiya’ pattern—an iconic design synonymous with the tropical essence of the Philippines—flows flawlessly over her body. This ensemble beautifully unfolds the narrative of the islands’ unity and artistry. With the overarching concept of airplanes, it’s evident that the message around promoting tourism to a country we are proud to showcase to the universe is soaring high.

Angelina Usanova | Ukraine

Angelina Usanova embodies the Mother Protector in her Miss Universe national costume. In light of what’s happening around the globe, this attire pays tribute to all Ukrainian mothers: those who protect their children, refugee mothers raising kids alone, and those who have lost children in the current conflicts.

This costume is composed of symbolic elements: blue fabric symbolizes a peaceful sky untouched by missiles, while white and milky hues signify tranquility, mirroring the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Finally, a golden and angelic figure embellishing the attire symbolizes the immeasurable value of every child’s life.

This national costume aims to draw attention to Ukraine’s current situation and underscores the importance for all nations to uphold the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

Jameela Uiras | Namibia

Enraptured by the magnificence of the majestic Diamond Oryx, a definitive symbol of Namibia’s unspoiled splendor and the enduring resilience of its people, Jameela Uiras stands tall on the grand Miss Universe stage. The choice to embody the Diamond Oryx encapsulates more than mere representation; it reflects the spirit of Namibia itself—undaunted and immersed in natural beauty. As Jameela takes her place, adorned in an ensemble inspired by this iconic animal, she not only showcases elegance but also symbolizes the enduring strength and remarkable essence of her nation, resonating with the global audience through a tribute that goes beyond the boundaries of a mere costume.

Maria Brechane | Brazil

In her national costume, Maria Brechane radiated a stunning resemblance to the captivating blue wings of the Mackerel. Representing Brazil, she stands poised and ready to captivate the Miss Universe stage with a colorful and creative ensemble that pays homage to the exuberance of this remarkable Brazilian bird. With the help of Helerson Da Maia, she not only embodies elegance but also showcases the country’s spirit and the splendor of its wildlife.

Melissa Flores | Mexico

Melissa Flores embodies a piece of her country, showcasing Mexico’s colorful culture. Adopting the theme of The Guardian of Alebrije, each stitch in the beautiful creation by Jesus Ramirez represents the enchantment of imagination, breathing life into a character that encapsulates the country’s rich history and contemporary essence. On closer inspection, this costume bursts into life, embodying the mystical heart of Mexican heritage. With a prominent heart at its center bearing the inscription ‘Mexico,’ every detail stands as a testament to her profound love for their culture and country.

Quynh Hoa Bui | Vietnam

The national costume of Quynh Hoa Bui draws inspiration from Mẫu Thượng Thiên, referencing the Mother Goddess of Heaven in Vietnamese culture. Designed by Chu Gallery, this stunning ensemble incorporates the significance of the color red, symbolizing sovereignty and prosperity.

The costume’s focal point lies in its intricately embroidered pattern, showcasing delicate lotus flowers and puffed birds, evoking a sense of beauty, grace, and cultural heritage. These chosen symbols embody not only aesthetic elegance but also carry profound cultural and historical significance, representing Vietnam’s rich traditions and values in the Miss Universe competition.

Sheynnis Palacios | Nicaragua

Sheynnis Palacios is poised to make a striking impression as she unfolds her wings to the wind, embodying the elegance and beauty of el Zanate, adorned in hues of black azabache. Inspired by the bird’s unstoppable movements and melodious singing, Miss Nicaragua’s national costume captures the essence of resilience.

Designed by Jorgito Salazar, this garment features dark tones symbolizing adversity, yet accentuates them with iridescent sparkles, serving as a poignant reminder that amidst challenges, there remains a glimmer of hope—a testament that there is always light at the end of the journey.
