Ever come across posts on the internet where people document themselves as they tell tales about “relapsing” while referring to an old flame? Recently, the internet has reclaimed a new buzzword that has been making rounds on social media platforms, possibly carrying multiple different meanings. 

The most contemporary definition of a “relapse” you will probably stumble across on social media is that it is a result of missing a lover from the past or a memory incorporated with them. Reciprocated or not, it carries the same intensity of a panoramic flush of memories. It could be in the form of a TikTok video, or an X thread about a loved one they thought had been long forgotten. Their “relapse” happens whenever they stumble across a thing that was once associated with their former lover. In words and tunes, scents and motion, there will always be one element that will carry you back in the past, heavy and haunted.

The question is, is this love-transfixed generation misusing the word “relapsing” too far from its origins?

Technicals Of Relapsing

The internet’s meaning of relapse doesn’t stray too far from its actual definition. However, it still carries a much lighter connotation compared to the original. Relapsing was initially related to mental illness and substance addiction. It is the backtracking to any toxic behavior or habit that once took a toll on how a person behaves and functions as a member of society.

In a more technical aspect, relapsing happens when a person who was already sober goes back to their old ways with lesser intentions of recovering. However, it is crucial to keep in mind that relapsing does not equate to failure. Missing a beat in recovery does not mean that it is farfetched and impossible. This just means that there must be something in the recovery process that requires a revision. There will always be room for healing. 

Fine Line Between Relapsing and Reminiscing

Some netizens have expressed their opinions on how the word “relapsing” has been co-opted by a certain section of social media to mean something it wasn’t originally intended for.

It has become a constant battle of boxing emotions into either relapsing or reminiscing. With netizens calling out the misuse of the word, there’s an ongoing online debate on whether it is acceptable to alter definitions of such terms.

relapse ≠ reminisce

in simpler terms, relapse is when you get better, finally feel better, but then suddenly, for some reason or trigger, you spiral back down to where you first started. whereas reminisce is to remember memories.

Just a friendly reminder that "relapse" isn't about reminiscing with your ex-partner. It's a term commonly used for individuals with addiction who have stopped but then find themselves using again. It's important to use words accurately to avoid confusion.

With “relapsing” taking on a new association with love and breakups, it could be hard to draw the line between relating destructive habits to it and completely altering its definition. 

Still, we must keep in mind the clear distinction between these two terms. “Reminisce” falls under more lighthearted throwbacks than the weight of the word “relapse.” One more thing to keep in mind with handling strong terms like relapsing is to acknowledge that some people actually suffer severe consequences for doing so. 

Compensating With Time

While it’s important to use the correct terms when referring to certain topics, especially of the sensitive kind, that doesn’t mean we should invalidate what other people feel. To some, “relapsing” in a romantic sense does carry an intense array of meanings to it, especially how it is closely related to mental health, and they deserve a safe space where their pain and vulnerability are seen and validated. 

Clinical psychologist in NYC specializing in psychotherapy Suzanne Lachmann defines relationship relapse as “giving in to withdrawal […] It’s your way of staving off the pain of acknowledging that the relationship is no longer viable. You are doing everything in your power to buy time now so you don’t have to face the pain.”

Grief from love, reciprocated or not, is real and it connotes a certain spectrum of pain. Looking back in love and coming to terms with the fact that it can never be relived again is deteriorating. It could take a long and excruciating period of time to be able to get over grief and trauma from something that once caused you genuine happiness. Pain inclined with love is one of the most stinging experiences a human can ever go through, and boxing certain terms for only specific struggles is not a progressive way forward. 

On Offsets And Validity

The key here is to approach the subject without invalidating such emotions from both sides. While it is human nature to hurt and wallow in the heights of emotions, it can also be valid to call out the “watering down” of terms that bear definitions of life and overall function for the affected community. 

What we ought to do is be sensitive, empathetic, and kind to everyone, as we all carry different weights of pain and emotional turmoils. Standing up for one’s belief, as long as it’s moral and ethical, is commendable. But the best way to go about this is to compensate and accept that our differences and spectacles of stories paint the picture of raw humanity.

Destigmatizing mental health discourse, especially in the Philippines, starts with letting everyone know that feelings are absolutely valid. And there is no way a single online debate about the ever-evolving nature of language could stop this growth and enlightenment.

MMFF goes Hollywood as the Manila International Film Festival 2023 brings Pinoy films to Los Angeles in a grand celebration of Filipino filmmaking artistry.

Filipino film excellence is reaching far and wide once again as the 2023 Manila International Film Festival introduces Metro Manila Film Festival entry films to Hollywood. The Hollywood edition of the festival is part of the celebration marking the 50th edition of the MMFF in 2024. Eight entry films will be screened at the festival—but that’s not all: the screenings will be accompanied by meet and greets with the stars and filmmakers, panel Q&As, and an awards gala to close out the festival.

The celebration will start as early as November, and the festival will run up to January 2024. Eight entries to the Metro Manila Film Festival will be screened in Los Angeles, California through December and January. Four out of eight entries have already been set to be screened based on their script alone, namely A Mother and Son’s Story, (K)Ampon, Penduko, and Rewind. This November, three films from the first summer edition of MMFF will launch the festival in LA and invite Filipinos in the States—patrons, film enthusiasts, families—to celebrate Filipino cinema in theatres abroad.

FILMS SHOWN THIS NOVEMBER

The three films that will kick off Manila International Film Festival 2023 are Here Comes the Groom, Love You Long Time, and About Us But Not About Us. These films will be screened at Sunset Boulevard on November 2 from 12 noon to 9:30 PM. Bianca Bustamante has made it no secret that she has a top goal of being the first female driver in F1. Since she was a kid, Bianca has been racing her way to that finish line. Recently, Bianca made one of the most significant decisions of her career when it was announced that she was joining the McLaren Driver Development Program. Not only does the move bring Bianca one step closer to her dream, but it also breaks barriers for Filipinos and women in general. Recently, McLaren made the historic announcement that Bianca Bustamante was joining the Driver Development Program for the 2024 season of F1 Academy. It can be remembered that Bianca made history earlier this year when she became the first Filipino to compete in the F1 Academy under PREMA Racing. She has gone on to rack up two historic wins during the inaugural season, the first at Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain in May, and the second in Italy in July. As she heads to the season finale in Austin, Texas this weekend, Binaca currently stands in 7th place with 102 points. 

All this and more convinced McLaren that Bianca was fit to join their program, and in the process, made history as the first Filipino and female driver to be part of the British team’s Driver Development Program. That’s yet another inclusion in the history books for Bianca. As such, when the 2024 F1 Academy season rolls around, she will be driving under McLaren’s signature papaya colors in the ART Grand Prix. It’s a feat that’s even more special for Bianca given how she’s been a long-time fan of the team. “I still have a hard time seeing my name next to McLaren without getting emotional as history and heritage linked to this team leaves me truly speechless,” shared Bianca. 

The love was mutual from McLaren as Emanuelle Pirro, Director of the McLaren Racing Driver Development and a former F1 driver himself, expressed, “I’m pleased that Bianca is joining our Driver Development program. She’s a promising young talent who has a brilliant work ethic and is aligned closely with our team values.”

A no-kill animal shelter, Happy Animals Club, was ordered to close by the City Government of Davao due to “baseless complaints.” They call for a reconsideration of the decision.

On October 18, 2023, a no-kill animal shelter, Happy Animals Club, revealed that they faced orders to shut down operations by the City Government of Davao. According to founder Ken Amante, the order came as a result of “baseless complaints filed by our neighbors, Mamaril Construction, who are trying to take control of the property we are located on.”

Amante elaborates in a video posted to social media that said neighbors acquired the lot next door to the shelter in 2019, years after Happy Animals Club were already operating in their own lot. Instead of filing an eviction notice, the neighbors filed a complaint with City Health, citing noise and a foul odor from the premises. The shelter disputes the claims, and calls for a re-evaluation of the circumstances.

In the video, he says that the city government ordered Happy Animals Club to cease operations and padlock their gate. They were told the shelter that they would confiscate their animals and possibly take them to the dog pound, where they will most likely be put down.

ABOUT HAPPY ANIMALS CLUB

The Happy Animals Club animal shelter was founded in 2014 by a then-9-year-old Amante, who went viral for rescuing and feeding dogs around his area. People from all over the nation and even the world started to fund his cause, leading to the continuous operations of Happy Animals Club.

Since then, the shelter has been able to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome hundreds of animals. Amante’s team and operations soon grew over time. They answer requests to rescue animals in need, feed them, and find them new homes.

Amante shares with CNN Philippines that they recently got in contact with a lawyer and filed for a re-investigation. In the interview, he says that the shelter was given only a few days to vacate the premises and relocate all dogs and that the parties involved were uninterested in having a dialogue with them. Unfortunately, the shelter is unable to relocate due to budget constraints, and they assert that regardless, it was wrong for them “to be driven away by a false complaint.”

Amante hopes to settle the property dispute in court instead, rather than race against time and pressure to cease all operations.

A Change.org petition was started by PAWSsion Project, a non-profit animal welfare organization, and has garnered over 8,000 signatures in one day. The petition calls for a re-evaluation of the closure, an open, transparent dialogue between parties involved, and public support to recognize the service the shelter is providing to the community.
