Why Some Of My Favorite Classes In College Were The Ones I Never Expected To Like (Or Excel In)

📚🤓📖✍️

Broaden your horizons in college by taking a class or two outside your comfort zone!

When in college, expand your horizons by taking classes beyond your scope of knowledge. Who knows—you might enjoy them more than you think you will.

I’ve taken a few required classes in college that I initially dismissed as being unnecessary or a waste of time, which is a common sentiment among many students across the world. Conversely, I’ve chosen a few electives that I knew weren’t right up my alley (as a HUMSS girlie at heart). What these classes have in common is that I loved them, even though they weren’t necessarily aligned with the career path I wanted for myself.

For example, Political Philosophy and Biocultural Diversity are a far cry from media and journalism, but I’ll admit that I enjoyed them more than some classes I took under my program. In these classes outside of my comfort zone or sphere of interest, I took away lessons and knowledge that, while perhaps not directly helpful to my career, I value nonetheless.

LIFE ISN’T A STRAIGHT PATH, AND NEITHER IS LEARNING

For many students, college is about simply getting a degree so they can get to working to earn a living. We can’t really blame them—the modern education system is often criticized for leaving no room for exploration, imagination, creativity, and freedom of thought. It’s all about creating the perfect employee, because that’s what the modern world requires.

However, few are lucky to be in environments that foster even some semblance of critical thinking and allow them to realize that the world is theirs for the taking—and that manifests in the multitude of opportunities presented to us in university. Life isn’t a path where you have to walk in a straight line, only doing what you know, taking only classes that’ll help you in your future job, just to get to where you want to go. There’ll be detours and twists and turns and opportunities, and opening yourself up to exploring them and learning from each one might just make your journey that much more enjoyable or even fulfilling.

EXPANDING MY HORIZONS

Pexels

Have you ever encountered takes online along the lines of “Why do we even learn math? We don’t use it?” or “Why am I studying about culture and society when I’m a STEM major?”? In a broader socio-cultural sense, it’s a pretty dangerous way of thinking, because, for instance, not promoting the learning of the humanities and social sciences leads to a decline in understanding, critical thinking, and creativity. Exploring subjects outside my realm of interest only made me see things on a broader perspective, as I got to connect new concepts, topics, and skills with everything I’ve already known. The brain gears were turning!

BEING AROUND GOOD PEOPLE GOES A LONG WAY

Pexels

Good instructors or even classmates can make a class so much more enjoyable. Often, when you have a professor that’s passionate about the subject and deeply committed to helping their students learn (and is also open to learning from them), the hours won’t feel so excruciatingly long, and you’ll feel inspired to drink it all in.

GRADES REALLY AREN’T EVERYTHING

Dupe Photos

I didn’t get the best grades in the classes I knew I wasn’t as good at as the ones more aligned with my program—and you know what? That was perfectly fine, because sometimes what you take away at the end of the semester is more important than your GPA or being on the Dean’s list.

From valuable life lessons in philosophy to hands-on experiments in biotech, some classes taught me things that I know I’ll take with me even after I graduate, whether or not they’ll directly help me with my career. That says a lot, considering how many required classes I’ve taken in my life where I ended the semester feeling unsatisfied.

So I was fine with what grades I ended up with—I can still say I learned a lot, like how to stop using the phrase “educate people,” especially when talking about communities, because it undermines other people’s understanding and agency in learning. I learned that in a science communication class!

GRATITUDE FOR LEARNING

Even now, I look back at those classes fondly, because it opened my eyes to what learning could be—fun, exciting, inspiring, and hope-giving. Learning can be difficult, but it’s so easy to recognize how learning different things can benefit us in many ways.

It’s easy to want to choose electives, classes, or even courses, that you perceive as “easy As,” because again, the current system pushes us to quantify value and prioritize good grades so you can secure a good future. But don’t feel as if you always have to. If you have the privilege of doing so, go beyond it all and exercise your brain.

Sure, you can sign up for electives that’ll supplement what you’re learning in your degree program, but if you want, you can also take classes a world away from your course and career path. You’re free to do so, despite how much society might tell you you’re not. Take them because you truly want to learn something new. It can be a leap of faith sometimes, but trust, you’ll get something valuable out of it for sure.

How To Serve Boho Chic Energy For The 2020s

line
A serve is a serve.

It isn’t just about the flower crowns anymore.

Related: Ready, Set, Festival: What You Should Prep Before Going To A Music Festival

If Coachella had a patron saint in the 2010s, it was Vanessa Hudgens in her boho era—fringe, flower crowns, and layers upon layers of jewelry. For a while, that was the image of boho chic: festival fashion turned up to eleven.

With Wanderland 2025 recent touchdown at the Filinvest City Events Grounds, the summer music festival season has lowkey begun, and let’s not forget Coachella happening in April that’s setting the stage for every trend you’ll see on Instagram in the next few months. Think Daisy Jones & The Six meets that one girl at the thrift store who always finds the best stuff. The key? Mixing old and new, leaning into textures, and pulling off that “I just threw this on” energy. The season makes it a great time to showcase your boho chic style. Here’s how to make it work.

Woodstock In My Mind

Boho chic started in the ‘60s and ‘70s, when hippie culture embraced flowy silhouettes, earthy tones, and that effortless, barefoot-at-a-music-festival vibe. Think Stevie Nicks twirling in a billowy dress or Jane Birkin with her undone bangs and wicker basket bag. It was about rejecting the mainstream—dressing like you were too busy writing poetry or road-tripping through Europe to care about trends.

Boho chic’s influence even found its way into pop culture long before the 2000s revival. Take Friends for example: in the episodeThe One with Mrs. Bing” (Season 1, Episode 11), Phoebe Buffay embodies the boho vibe perfectly. She shows up wearing a loose, flowy dress, layered accessories, and that quirky, artsy energy that’s become synonymous with the style.

Fast forward to the 2000s, and boho made a comeback in a big way. The early Y2K era was flashy, maximalist, and drenched in logos, so boho felt like the cooler, more authentic alternative. Y2K it-girls like The Olsens, Sienna Miller, and Mischa Barton made it a full-on movement, while Tumblr-era indie girls like Alexa Chung and Clemence Poésy carried it into the 2010s.

Now, with the return of indie sleaze and the slow death of hyper-curated aesthetics, boho is slipping back into fashion’s rotation. But this time, it’s quieter, ess costume-y. More about looking like a cool art student who lives in vintage Chloé and always has a dog-eared book in their bag.

Mix and Match

If you want a 2020s update of boho chic, it’s time to ditch the flower crowns, but accessories are still a key part of the look. Layering is everything here, but it’s all about balance. A dainty chain belt? Essential. A couple of layered necklaces or a chunky ring to tie it all together? Yes, please. Keep it simple—no need to go full-on jewelry overload. Go for small details that elevate your outfit, like a beaded bracelet or a woven bag that feels like it’s been passed down through generations.

@allina_ai The best combo #bohochic #outfitinspo ♬ original sound – RAVE DEE

Boho is no longer just about one aesthetic. It’s about the blend. Think of pairing denim with crochet or mixing a floaty skirt with a leather jacket. It’s all about easy-to-mix-and-match pieces that feel like they’re made for a festival runway. Add in a kimono or a vintage scarf to complete the look—you know, just enough to make you stand out without trying too hard.

Not Just Another Y2K Throwback

Boho has always been an it-girl staple, and no one owns it quite like Florence Welch. She’s the undisputed queen of modern bohemian fashion—flowy dresses, layered lace, and that effortlessly mystical energy that feels straight out of a ‘70s fever dream. Gucci has been on the same wavelength, leaning into that dreamy, rockstar-meets-romantic vibe with vintage-inspired silhouettes and maximalist textures.

But boho isn’t just about dreamy, ethereal vibes. Suki Waterhouse makes it look a little grungier, mixing it with that messy, indie sleaze energy. And Doechii? She just gave it a whole new attitude. Spotted at Paris Fashion Week in a flowy Chloé look, she made boho feel anything but soft—more like the kind of cool that turns heads and shuts down a room.

Boho’s revival makes sense—fashion is craving something real again. After years of minimalism, quiet luxury, and microtrends that disappear overnight, people want style with personality. The new boho isn’t about following rules—it’s about wearing what feels good, mixing old with new, and looking like you belong in a Sofia Coppola movie.

The best part? Unlike the hyper-fast trends of TikTok, boho isn’t something you just buy—it’s something you collect, piece by piece. It’s a vintage slip dress you found at a flea market, your mom’s old lace top, or that perfectly worn-in leather bag you refuse to part with. It’s fashion with a story, and in an era of mass production and AI-generated aesthetics, that’s exactly what makes it cool again. So the next time you’re thinking of your next ‘fit at the festival, you know where to look.

Eraserheads: Combo On The Run

Gen Z Can Learn A Lot From Eraserheads: Combo On The Run

line
🤘🏼⚡️🎸

More than just participating in the mythmaking of the legendary band, Eraserheads: Combo On The Run also tears it down to get into the heart of it all.

Related: The New Movies And Shows Of March 2025 We’re Excited To Watch

For every legendary, groundbreaking, revolutionary, and genre-defining artist comes the inevitable piece of media that immortalizes their legacy, whether it be a documentary, biopic, or both. So, it really was only a matter of time before Eraserheads got that treatment, and that time finally came with the arrival of the documentary Eraserheads: Combo On The Run

The Diane Ventura-directed documentary, which takes its name after one of the band’s songs, explores how Ely Buendia, Marcus Adoro, Buddy Zabala, and Raimund Marasigan came together during turbulent times to redefine the genre, sound, and culture of a generation while also delving into the members’ struggles among themselves and within them. For any E-Heads fan, this documentary is a no-brainer of a must-watch, but what makes the movie a compelling viewing experience is how it looks inward as much as it does outward to reflect on the band’s life and legacy that still resonates to this day.

AN OPEN CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Eraserheads: Combo On The Run can be divided into roughly two parts. The first part, which constitutes the first half of the documentary, follows the formation, rise, and success of the band. Following the People Power Revolution in 1986, we see how the group came together in the background of political turmoil and newfound hope (and fears) for the youth of the time. Through a mix of in-person interviews and archival footage, Combo On The Run pieces together how Eraserheads came to be, and, more importantly, what made the band stand out from their peers.

It’s been decades since the band arrived on the OPM scene, yet their music and influence are still felt today even among Gen Z. The band’s relevance to today’s youth mirrors that of their impact on the youth of the late 80s and 90s because, aside from writing about love, Eraserheads also centered their music on relatable topics like typical problems, worries, thoughts, and concerns of Filipino youth.

ERASERHEADS

It also helped that the band members themselves weren’t your clean-cut boys who adhered to a certain standard. They didn’t fit in per se as they marched to the beat of their own drum, something that young people, no matter the generation, can relate to when it comes to following the status quo.

Watching the documentary, Gen Z viewers can see themselves in Eraserheads during their early years in how they started as a bunch of college kids who worked their way from square one, made music that reflected what they were going through, and treated fame and success with the unseriousness that wouldn’t be out of place in today’s generation. Add to that how nobody did OPM quite like Eraserheads, you have a group who find themselves relevant with the youth no matter the decade.

THEY WORKED IT OUT ON THE REMIX

By the time Eraserheads: Combo On The Run enters its second half, the narrative shifts to charting the band’s initial breakup and eventual reunion, and it’s arguably the best part about this movie. More than just participating in the mythmaking of the legendary band, Combo On The Run also isn’t afraid to tear it down to get into the heart of it all, and that’s admirable. The movie delves into, with help from the band members themselves, the fact that Ely, Marcus, Buddy, and Raimund weren’t really besties but more like co-workers who eventually were burnt out over each other.

ERASERHEADS DOCUMENTARY

Issues like resentment and lack of communication become running themes in member interviews on their falling out, and it provides intriguing insights and poignant reminders that Gen Z can learn from. Combo On The Run goes there with the difficult topics, most notably touching upon Marcus Adoro and his daughter, syd hartha, and the domino effect it caused among the members and with the band’s legacy in general. In as much as the band’s 2022 reunion was to unite a country following a heated presidential election, the reunion also served as a therapeutic moment for the band as we see glimpses of them making amends and beginning the journey to healing after years of animosity and awkwardness.

Eraserheads: Combo On The Run avoids becoming your typical music documentary because it understands that the story of Eraserheads isn’t just their iconic tracks, but also their struggles, issues, and redemption. The film isn’t just a history lesson or a nostalgia trip, but a timeless reminder that even the best of us can go through it, yet can still find our way back. As Gen Z likes to say, we love to see it. And with a new concert and music in the works, the music, artistry, and messages of Eraserheads will continue to hit.

Artist And Pilot Janah Zaplan Is Taking To The Skies—In More Ways Than One

line
A balancing act in the clouds. ✈️

From singing melodies to piloting aircraft, Janah Zaplan is spreading her wings and chasing all her dreams full-throttle.

Related: Fly High: The Power Of Adventure With Chezka Carandang

We know about young professionals pursuing a creative career while also having a corporate day job, musicians with side hustles, or artists with a business. Whether it’s to make a living or because they want to live out all their dreams, balancing it all takes a lot of will and guts. For one singer and recently-graduated student pilot, her love for what she does and the support she gets from her loved ones push her to remain steadfast in her pursuits amidst the turbulence of life.

Following in her former finishing aircraft mechanic dad’s footsteps contrails, Janah Zaplan pursued her dreams of flying after growing up traveling the world with her family, leading to her getting a degree in Aviation, Major in Flying from the Air Link International Aviation College.

A Star Pop music artist, the 22-year-old has a few songs under her belt, such as Himbing and I LUV U. In the last few years, Janah’s hands have been busy with microphones and control sticks, studying to become a pilot in a four-year degree program with both theoretical and practical learning opportunities as she also furthers her music career.

Janah graduated from the aviation college as cum laude earlier this year, her Latin honor a secret from her parents until the ceremony. It was an emotional moment for them all, she admitted, but they were proud of all she’s accomplished.

Though she’s not quite achieved her ultimate goal of being a commercial airline pilot, yet, Janah’s ready to take on the world and live her dreams, come what may. Get to know the artist and pilot below.

SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS WITH JANAH ZAPLAN

Congratulations on all your success, Janah! To start things off, what inspired you to pursue both music and a career in flying?

Actually, my career in music started way, way back, 2018 when I entered the music industry. But I really started very, very young because of my parents. They supported me throughout my journey from lining up for queues to get in TV shows or TV competitions to helping me with school competitions, just to showcase my talent that they saw in me, which eventually turned out into a career path that I’m following right now.

And then when it comes to my aviation career, into a career path that I am having right now, it actually just started when we started traveling. And I saw those pilots making the airport their runway, and I feel like I wanted to become like them. They looked so posh, so clean, so sleek.

I was just so fascinated by how airplanes really fly. I was so curious as to how it could carry around so many passengers and how it can go from point A to point B in just how many miles. So ever since then, I started talking to my parents about it, and they were very supportive. I’m lucky enough to have parents like them who are actually capable of letting me study such a course.

With regard to balancing it all, you’re pursuing two pretty different career trajectories. And now that you’ve graduated, you’re going to be busier in both aspects. How do you think you’ll be able to manage or balance it all?

Just like during my studies, I was very lucky enough to have a management who understands my dreams. So whenever I fly, they take the time to wait for me. I usually stay in Lubang in Mindoro—that’s where we fly—I usually stay there for a month or more, so they wait for me. Kapag may event during that time, hindi nila ako kukulitin. But when I come home to Manila, that’s when mall shows start coming up, guestings, front acts, lahat ng mga pwede kong gawin to promote my songs. It’s been working for us, and I think that’s how I’m gonna do it [moving forward].

With regard to my aviation career, I will continue my training, my studies pa rin. Kasi hindi talaga siya madali. I actually thought na ang pagiging piloto, ganun-ganun lang, but no, it takes time. It takes a lot of effort, courage, and training, because there are a lot of rejections, failures, and mistakes, so I just have to keep moving forward and motivate myself to reach my goal hopefully in the future—which is to become an airline pilot.

With your aviation studies, what are some of the hardest things that you had to learn?

It’s not just that you have to be mentally ready. You also need to be fit, you need to be emotionally stable because there are a lot of factors in becoming a pilot. You have to sleep well, you have to know that you’re fit to fly.

Was there any judgment in terms of you being a girl?

I’m actually glad that I wasn’t able to experience such. Everybody was open in my school and they’re very supportive with girls flying. During my first year, I flew the bigger training aircraft than what they usually fly. So, they’re like, ‘pinili mo yan!’, but in a joking way. You just need to be used to carrying that heavy aircraft with you just being so small. At the end of the day, as long as you’re able to achieve your purpose, your goal, you’re already a good pilot.

Any other hardships you had to overcome?

I think what was really hard wasn’t the flight training—it’s more of the theoretical stuff that we really needed to learn, because flying is [relatively] easy. Even a gamer could probably fly a plane, but what makes it hard are the factors surrounding it like weather, air laws, and a lot more subjects you have to take. I think ‘yun yung pinakamahirap for me, especially since I was studying during the pandemic. I had to take some of my subjects online, and it wasn’t that easy to grasp because we were just seeing it on screen, we weren’t actually experiencing it.

Do you have any bucket list destinations you want to fly to?

I have a lot! If dreaming big lang talaga, my dream destination is South Africa. And also Iceland, Finland, anywhere with an aurora borealis!

I was thinking about how unique your experience is as an artist and a pilot. In your life, if you’ve ever felt like giving either one up or focus on one instead, what pushed you to keep doing both?

When I was having a hard time during my studies, I kind of thought about taking a break in the music industry. Pero what really motivated me not to give it up was the love and support that my parents and management gave—and also the fans who have been with me since way back in 2018 na talagang sumuporta sakin. They keep telling me, ‘ano na, may bago ka na bang kanta? What’s new with you? Meron ka bang gig? Meron ka bang ganyan?’. So I feel the love and care and support from the people around me, and that’s what pushed me to keep going and keep doing both.

That’s wonderful! I think also that the notion of having to give either one up stems from people thinking that people can only have like one dream, when that’s really really not the case. Especially if it’s two things that you can balance, like being a creative and then also pursuing something like aviation. What would you say to people who think they should only choose one dream or pursue one path?

Keep on trying to pursue those dreams of yours, and if you fail, that’s fine! If you succeed, that’s better. But just try to enjoy life while trying to reach what your goal is and enjoy that journey that you’re taking, because through it all, you’ll have lessons, experiences you can never forget, and failures that will really make you better as a person. I feel like you get to be more of yourself once you’re actually able to do what you love.

From Tumblr-esque Y2K-inspired visuals to a nostalgia-meets-modern aesthetic, KiiiKiii wants the world to know that they’re here to have a good time, and want you to join them.

KIIIKIII

“Trainee days weren’t easy, and there were tough moments with evaluations and song prep. But now, having finally debuted as KiiiKiii and performing on the stages we once only dreamed about—it feels like we’re living our dream,” shares KYA in an interview with NYLON Manila.

The girls unlocked a core memory with their debut, and with their skills, lessons, and pedigree behind them, it’s a moment they’re ready for. “We feel incredibly motivated knowing we’re following in the footsteps of senior artists like IVE, who have put in so much hard work,” says HAUM. “Their dedication inspires us to give our best effort, rather than feeling pressured.”

One thing about K-pop, it adapts to the times. As generations come and go and the oldest of Gen Alpha starts to reach their teen years, what it means to be a K-pop group has changed. KiiiKiii’s thesis as a group is all about the vibes, and we mean that in a good way. As JIYU explains, “KiiiKiii is all about embracing fresh, fun energy. We’re different, and that’s what makes us stand out. Our vibe connects with Gen Z and Gen Alpha because it’s all about being free-spirited, playful, and exciting.”

While “youth” and “K-pop” have found themselves together in many sentences over the years, it feels refreshing in a way to see the group unapologetically embrace the fact that they are young (the youngest member, KYA, was born in 2010). For KiiiKiii, it’s really not that serious, and it even reflects in their name, which is meant to represent the sound of someone laughing. “To us, K-pop is all about bringing joy and positive energy,” expresses SUI. “It’s a culture that’s about making people smile, and we want to contribute to that. We will continue to work hard to make a positive impact on K-pop.”

KIIIKIII JIYU

As KiiiKiii steps into the world as official K-pop idols, they promise to keep it fun with a Gen Z twist, something K-pop admittedly could use more of these days. “KiiiKiii is about to bring a whole new side of K-pop that’s never been seen before. We’re pushing boundaries and creating new paths. We’re super excited for what’s ahead and we know fans will be too,” adds LEESOL.

In one of the group’s first global interviews following their debut, KiiiKiii opens up about their road to debut, their music, how they view K-pop, and more. Read the full interview below.

First of all, congratulations on your debut. What’s the first thing you did when you realized you were going to debut as a K-pop idol?

SUI: When we first found out about our debut, tears were the first thing that came to our eyes. At that moment, we just hugged each other.

Do you recall the first time you met each other? What were your first impressions of each other?

JIYU: I remember meeting a few of the members more clearly than others, but what stands out is how sweet, kind, and thoughtful everyone was from the start.

KYA: The first thing I remember about JIYU is thinking she was younger than me! I was totally shocked when I found out she was actually four years older than me! That was a real surprise.

Considering that your Starship Entertainment’s newest girl group and your sister group is IVE, do you feel any pressure having that much pedigree behind you?

HAUM: We feel incredibly motivated knowing we’re following in the footsteps of senior artists like IVE, who have put in so much hard work. Their dedication inspires us to give our best effort, rather than feeling pressured.

KIIIKIII SUI

Your motto is “Don’t lose your cheerfulness, even in an imperfect reality.” What personally makes you happy or cheerful?

KYA: We’re all about lifting each other up. We chat, joke around, and have fun together even when we’re busy. It’s that bond and humor that keeps us going through everything.

SUI: Honestly, meeting our fans after debut has been one of the happiest moments. Their energy is incredible—it really fuels us and makes us even more excited to keep going.

What was it like working on your debut and would you say the experience was what you thought it would be like when you were still trainees?

KYA: Trainee days weren’t easy, and there were tough moments with evaluations and song prep. But now, having finally debuted as KiiiKiii and performing on the stages we once only dreamed about—it feels like we’re living our dream. The journey has been totally worth it!

DEBUT SONG is a fun and interesting track with how it turns the tune of Happy Birthday to one celebrating your debut. Could you share how that song came to be?

JIYU: Our DEBUT SONG is all about celebrating our new beginning as KiiiKiii. It’s playful, lighthearted, and packed with humor. We wanted to combine the excitement of a birthday celebration with a quirky twist, and we felt this was the perfect way to introduce ourselves.

KIIIKIII KYA

I DO ME was released out of the blue and came as a surprise to many since not all members were revealed at the time the music video dropped. What was your reaction when you learned the video was going to be a surprise release?

KYA: We knew it would be a bit of a shock to the fans, but we loved the idea of doing something unexpected. It felt very KiiiKiii, a little different from the usual, and we were super excited to greet fans in this unconventional way.

All of you are very young, being in both Gen Z and Gen Alpha. How do you think your youth and as part of the new generation contribute to KiiiKiii’s identity?

JIYU: KiiiKiii is all about embracing fresh, fun energy. We’re different, and that’s what makes us stand out. Our vibe connects with Gen Z and Gen Alpha because it’s all about being free-spirited, playful, and exciting.

Gen Z and Gen Alpha love Y2K nostalgia and modern youthfulness, something that is also noticeable in your visual aesthetic. For you, how do you express yourself in a way that marries the old with the new?

KYA: We have members from both Gen Z and Gen Alpha, each bringing something unique to the table—whether it’s fashion, vibes, or energy. We blend vintage elements with modern twists to create a “newtro” feel, mixing our love for the past with a contemporary vibe.

HAUM: We’ve made it our goal to express ourselves authentically by carving our own path. KiiiKiii is about redefining visuals in a way that feels true to who we are, bringing something totally new to the table.

KIIIKIII LEESOL

What’s the best part about being young?

KYA: We get to be carefree, pure, and natural. It’s such a gift to be able to connect with people in that way. I believe our energy, brightness, and authenticity are things that will resonate with everyone.

How would you describe K-pop through the lens of KiiiKiii?

SUI: To us, K-pop is all about bringing joy and positive energy. It’s a culture that’s about making people smile, and we want to contribute to that. We will continue to work hard to make a positive impact on K-pop.

With how global K-pop is now, it’s safe to say you already have listeners around the world. As a rookie girl group with so many accessible platforms, how do you navigate the Korean side of K-pop with the global aspect of the genre?

JIYU: We’re always looking for ways to blend Korean culture into everything we do—whether it’s through games, choreography, or lyrics. We believe it’s the perfect way to share the beauty of Korean culture with fans around the world. It’s all about connecting cultures and making something truly global.

KIIIKIII HAUM

Why do you think people should watch out for KiiiKiii and the new generation of K-pop artists in general?

LEESOL: KiiiKiii is about to bring a whole new side of K-pop that’s never been seen before. We’re pushing boundaries and creating new paths. We’re super excited for what’s ahead and we know fans will be too.

KYA: There’s so much diversity in the K-pop world now, with idols debuting in different genres and concepts. We’re here to offer something fresh, fun, and totally unique. That’s definitely worth paying attention to.

What are you most excited for with the start of your K-pop journey?

SUI: We’re beyond excited to perform on so many stages and meet fans in person. It’s been incredible already, and the best part is knowing that there’s so much more to come.

JIYU: We want to bring laughter, energy, and happiness to people. That’s our goal as KiiiKiii. We can’t wait to share more music and performances with you all. It’s going to be an amazing journey!

LEESOL: I’m really excited to connect with fans around the world and share our music with them. Most of all, I’m thrilled to feel their love and support, and I hope to make them proud of everything we do. It’s a big journey ahead, and I’m ready to give it my all!

Belinda Talks Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Women Across The Globe

line
🌎✨🎶💞

Spanish-Mexican artist Belinda talks the ‘Blink Twice (Dos Veces Remix)’ collab with BINI and connecting with people across cultures.

Related: With Their Newest Global Collab, BINI Wants You To Live Your Most Fearless Life

We love seeing women maximize their joint slay and prove that art truly has no limits. No language, country border, or wide expanse of ocean can hinder the spread of joy that music brings, and female artists BINI and Belinda shows us so in the most colorful way possible.

In their ‘sobrang Latina era, P-pop girl group BINI tapped Spanish-Mexican artist Belinda to collaborate on Blink Twice (Dos Veces Remix), a version of their newest single with a Spanish twist. Belinda’s confidence complimented BINI’s charm quite well as her language and smooth vocals added something fresh to the playful track.

The Blink Twice (Dos Veces Remix) is not only an item ticked off both artists’ bucket lists (both BINI and Belinda have wanted to collaborate with global artists and have been doing so lately, BINI with Agnez Mo and eaJ and Belinda with Cher, for instance), but it’s also a wonderful treat for Women’s Month as two empowered and inspiring female acts show the world what they’ve got.

The remix also gives people a chance to discover other global artists and their music. Belinda is a singer and actress, whom you may have seen on The Cheetah Girls 2 (2006) and Baywatch (2017). A fierce performer and pop star, she’s not one to shy away from cutting disses or celebratory breakup songs (like Cactus), with her upcoming album (her first full album since 2013) titled Indomable or Indomitable in English. If that doesn’t send a powerful message right out of the gate, we don’t know what does.

Like BINI’s, Belinda’s music and artistry often encourage women to be their most authentic, confident selves. They also both own their culture and femininity, using them as inspiration for their work. These are strong, independent women making their mark on the music scene on a global scale, their sounds and styles reaching far and wide from one side of the world to another.

In an exclusive interview with NYLON Manila, Belinda shares her excitement about Blink Twice (Dos Veces Remix), her admiration for BINI, and her love for music (she also loves K-pop, BTW!). Get to know the Spanish-Mexican artist through the interview below.

CROSS-CULTURAL CONNECTIONS WITH BELINDA

Nice to meet you, Belinda! Congratulations on the new track and your collaboration with BINI.

Thank you so much! I’m very, very excited for this collab—very happy. I think we did something very magical and special.

What was it like when you first heard that you would be collaborating with a Filipino girl group?

I was very happy about it and so excited! The song is amazing. When I first heard Blink Twice, I was like, ‘Yes, I want to collaborate!’ I love pop music, so it was like a fresh moment for me, and obviously I love BINI. I’m a huge fan of their music, their dances, and their personalities, so I was very grateful and honored to be part of this project.

You said you love pop music—what or who inspires you?

Definitely K-pop! I love BINI, obviously, they’re amazing. I love Celine Dion, Gwen Stefani—she’s amazing, she’s done different styles and genres. She’s done rock, she’s done pop, she’s done R&B, so just different girls in music, and from different countries and generations, too.

It’s exciting for us as well to see collaborations between artists from all over the world, and for female artists to slay. How does it feel to see women like you, BINI, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan—how does it feel to see women taking over the global music scene?

I think that it’s a very important time for us as musicians, as singers, performers, writers, and songwriters. This is a great moment for women in this industry, because years ago, there weren’t [as] many females. Right now, I think it’s great to see how we’ve become so relevant in music, and we see more women expressing their feelings more openly through their songs, the lyrics, and everything.

I agree! And I think, also, something about both your music and BINI’s is that you both want to send empowering messages to your listeners. So to make others more aware of who you are as an artist, could I just ask what kind of messages that you want to impart with your music and your artistry?

My music is very versatile in terms of how I don’t like to do only one genre. I love doing different types—I play around with rhythms and language, singing in English and Spanish and mixing cultures, in this case like with Blink Twice, where I sing my verse in Spanish. I’m not afraid of saying who I am and doing something different. I think we as women in this industry should not have any fear about showing who we are. We can do so many different things.

What’s something new you learned from this collab with BINI?

With BINI, I love how they play with their voices—it’s not only the color of their voices that’s amazing, it’s also how they mix and how they do different harmonies and melodies at the same time. One of the girls could be singing in one tone and then the other one is doing a second voice in other tones. How they mix their voices is very creative. The choreographies that they do, it’s very powerful, and that inspires me, too. It’s not so easy to sing this song! There’s many harmonies and layers in this song, so that’s incredible.

What would you like to say to the new fans that are discovering you and your music after this collaboration?

That I’m very grateful! Also, that I’ve seen all the TikToks and all the videos that people from different countries, from the Philippines, and I’m very thankful and happy, because I think that music is about love, and this is something that I say about this collaboration—that this song is made out of so much love.

You can feel it, you can see it, and it doesn’t matter if you speak English, if you speak Spanish, if you speak Italian. I think that music—when it’s a good song, when it’s a great melody, and it comes out of a project with so much passion and love, then it becomes a hit. So, this song is already the biggest hit for me, and I hope that people love it as well.

Interview edited for length and clarity.

The Round-Up: Our Favorite New Music Drops Of The Week

line
We love a banger in this house.

Getting all the vibes from j-hope, Earl Agustin, Bella Poarch, and more.

Related: The Round-Up: There’s Always Time For New Music

On the one hand, we kinda need the new music drops to stop overwhelming us like this because it’s been banger drop after banger drop for weeks. But on the other hand, that’s a good problem to have and we’ll always be here for new bops to add to our playlists. Check out some of our fave recent releases below.

MONA LISA – J-HOPE

We’re here for this sound for j-hope with its easy beats and vibey feel.

YOUNG AND HOTTER THAN ME – SELENA GOMEZ AND BENNY BLANCO

Selena and Benny put their love story on an album that gives us the full story—before they met, falling in love and looking to what the future holds.

JUST US – JACK HARLOW AND DOJA CAT

Dating rumors or not, Jack and Doja make good music together, with the latter lowkey being the best part of the track.

PAG-IBIG NG IKAW AT AKO – EARL AGUSTIN

The voice??? Oh Earl Agustin, the Pinoy crooner that you are!

WILL YOU ALWAYS LOVE HER? – BELLA POARCH

We kinda need the pop girl discourse to start including Bella Poarch because she knows how to deliver good pop music with a meaning behind it.

PARA PILITIN KA – JIKAMARIE AND SKUSTA CLEE

jikamarie saw the vision and she executed it in this earworm of a R&B track.

FUNNY – ENA MORI

Ena’s new song puts girlhood at the center, but one fueled by friendships and female rage in wanting to move beyond misogynistic ideals.

KNOW ABOUT ME – NMIXX

Okay NMIXX! We weren’t expecting this sound from them, but we’re here for it.

BEBE – STAYC

This cunty ahh song. Featuring a funky house beat, addictive drop, and danceable rhythm, STAYC’s latest has us moving and also shares a strong message of defying stereotypes.

+82 PRESSIN’ – MARK AND HAECHAN

It’s a catchy song, and the Sin City-inspired music video gets a 10/10 from us.

VVV – THE BOYZ

THE BOYZ, you never let us down. Even after leaving their old company, the group is still cooking up bops.

ALAM MO BA – 1ST.ONE

Exactly 1ST.ONE, let that special someone know that their partner is no good for them and you’re the one she deserves.

DSTM – ONE OR EIGHT

Kinda iconic of ONE OR EIGHT to clear this sample of Rihanna’s Don’t Stop The Music, with their reinterpretation featuring rap, melodic hooks, and hip-hop beats.

CUPID’S GIRL – MARINA

Marina, we missed you diva! We have a feeling this new era is going to give early Marina vibes, and we’re here for it.

PICTURE WINDOW – JAPANESE BREAKFAST

A new Japanese Breakfast album, and the people cheered!

CVNTY 2.0 – STEF ARANAS AND M1SS JADE SO

This song makes absolute sense to have M1ss Jade So feature on a remix. The dolls came through with this one.

IKAW ANG MISS UNIVERSE KO – ANDRES MUHLACH

Ok, it’s a good first attempt from Andres.
