BINI And SB19 Are Showing What P-pop Excellence Looks Like In Korea

Billboard Korea honoring SB19 and BINI and getting to perform in front of the biggest K-pop stars? It’s enough to shed a tear.

Most new P-pop stans may not realize it, but there was a time not too long ago when the genre was down in the trenches fighting for its life as something to be taken seriously and not be seen as just a cheap imitation of K-pop. In some ways, the stereotype is still there, but in just a few years, P-pop has come a long way with some of the biggest OPM acts of today being P-pop groups. They’re doing their thing, and as further recognition of P-pop’s increasing presence and even importance in the modern music scene, two of the genre’s hottest acts will be honored by Billboard Korea.

VOICES OF ASIA FR

It was recently announced that SB19 and BINI are set to receive the Voices of Asia award at Billboard Korea’s KPOP Power 100, as chosen by Billboard Philippines in recognition of being at the forefront of a movement. Not only are both groups flying to Seoul to personally receive the award and rub shoulders with luminaries and some of the K-pop’s biggest stars, but they are also set to perform, giving all your K-pop faves a taste of what P-pop excellence looks like (if they haven’t experienced it already). If this recognition isn’t further proof that P-pop is rising, then we don’t know what is.

SB19 Billboard Korea

If anyone deserved this award and opportunity, it would be SB19 and BINI. SB19 is widely credited with helping P-pop reach its latest peak in the 2020s. These boys were one of the first groups to walk so the rest could run. Since their debut, Pablo, Stell, Josh, Ken, and Justin have made it clear they’re here to stay. They’ve already racked up milestones, and often being the first Filipinos to do so. Billboard nominations, global chart-topping hits, international tours, you name it, they did it.

BINI, meanwhile, is cracking that P-pop glass ceiling like it’s nobody’s business. With eight fierce, talented young women—Jhoanna, Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, and Sheena—BINI is redefining what it means to be a girl group in the 2020s. Like with their fellow honoree SB19, the early years weren’t easy for BINI. But also like their fellow P-pop group, the breakthrough was just over the horizon for the girls, and they’ve been basking in the sunlight ever since. They’ve got the moves, the looks, and the LSS-inducing bops that empower and inspire. Add to that their sleek and synchronized choreo, BINI got the girl group bag on lock.

IT’S GIVING P-POP RISE

Honestly, this isn’t just a win for P-pop, but for Filipinos in general. It shows that Filipino talent deserves the recognition it gets on the global stage. Being crowned Voices of Asia isn’t just another award for their trophy shelf—it’s validation that SB19 and BINI have a part to play in the future of Asian music. These groups are armed with polished and powerful bangers, but with a distinctly Filipino vibe. They’re pushing the boundaries of what Asian pop music can sound, look, and feel like.

BINI Billboard Korea

More importantly, it’s also about seeing our own culture and stories represented on the same platforms as the biggest acts in the world. We’ve grown up in a world where foreign acts, especially K-pop, rule our playlists. But now, P-pop is entering the chat, and for good reason. SB19 and BINI are what happens when hard work, authenticity, and cultural pride collide. We can create our own, make our own rules, and take up space. It’s about seeing ourselves in our idols, knowing that they’ve faced the same struggles and come out on top.

We just know SB19 and BINI are going to devour in Seoul, and we can’t wait for it.

5 Tips from Stylists on How to Dress for Success

5 Ways to Dress for Success, According to Fashion Stylists

line
"You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it." — Edith Head

With these tips from the experts, you’ll be well-equipped to dress for success and leave a lasting impression.

Stepping into your first interview or work event can feel like you’re on a high-stakes runway, trying to strike the perfect balance between showcasing your personal style and adhering to dress codes. It’s about making a strong impression while respecting the established norms of office attire, and managing your professional reputation.

To help you walk this tightrope, we’ve gathered some top-notch advice from fashion stylists who know exactly how to dress for success. From perfecting your tailored look to mastering the art of power dressing, these tips will guide you in crafting a wardrobe that not only makes a statement but also aligns with professional expectations. Here’s how to ensure you shine for all the right reasons.

All About You

Bryan Laroza delivers powerful advice: “Keep the focus on you—not on what you’re wearing. It’s very easy to distract yet hard to impress people on a very important day, so make sure your outfit will both stand out and complement your features. Trust me, people will start taking you more seriously.”

The real secret to making a lasting impression is to let your unique qualities shine through. Your outfit should enhance, not eclipse, your personal presence. After all, you’re the star of the show—your clothes are just the supporting cast.

Combine with Confidence

Feeling like your wardrobe needs a boost? Gee Jocson has the perfect recipe to spice things up. She reveals her personal formula for power dressing: “Power dressing for me is embracing your sexuality and not being afraid to show it through your clothes! For me, it’s the bra + blazer + sleek hair + perfume combo! I wear Tom Ford Noir de Noir perfume, an Anabeza bra, a suit, and slick back my hair. This combo = confidence!”

The key is to wear something that makes you feel like you can conquer the world. Your outfit should empower you and enhance your confidence, making you feel ready to tackle anything that comes your way. Whether it’s a sleek blazer paired with a bold fragrance or a statement bra under a tailored suit, the right combination can make you feel unstoppable.

Consistency is Key: Keep Your Look Cohesive

Once you’ve decided on your mood, consistency is your next best friend. Think of it as creating a narrative—each piece of clothing should complement the others to build a cohesive look. “From color to texture, everything has to be on theme. This is what really helps me dress with intention; my style gets so much more cohesive and impactful,” advises NYLON Manila’s resident stylist, Kurt Abonal.

If you’re leaning into a more minimalist style for a corporate internship interview, stick to neutral tones, clean lines, and simple accessories. Each piece should have a reason for being there; if it doesn’t add to the story, leave it out. This approach not only simplifies your choices but also ensures that your outfit communicates exactly what you want to convey about yourself.

Fix the Fit

A well-fitted outfit not only looks more professional but also boosts your confidence. After all, when your clothes hug you in all the right places, it’s like having your own personal cheerleader stitched into every seam. As NYLON Manila Fashion Director Andre Chang cheekily reminds us: “Tailored clothing that fits your body shape well always looks more polished. Don’t hesitate to get items altered for the perfect fit.”

The right fit does wonders—making you feel more put-together, giving you a stronger presence, and ensuring you leave a lasting impression. That extra bit of tailoring effort not only helps you meet the dress code but also ensures you stand out in the best way possible.

Monochrome Moment

Another tip from Andre Chang? When in doubt, go monochrome. The creative director shares: “Dressing in a single color or varying shades of the same color can create a streamlined and sophisticated look.” Monochrome dressing is a timeless style hack that effortlessly elevates your appearance. Whether you’re embracing an all-black ensemble for an edgy vibe or soft neutrals for a more understated touch, sticking to one color palette guarantees a sleek, polished look with minimal effort.

It draws the eye in, creating a cohesive outfit that enhances your stature, refines your appearance, and shows off your style savvy.

Why Do We Treat Victims So Callously? The Value Of Compassion In Dealing With Tough Stories

line
Time to be more mindful.

Let’s not shame victims who come forward with their stories into silence.

(Trigger warning: This article contains mentions of rape and assault.)

Related: Medusa Was a Victim—And So Were the Other Girls

It’s already so difficult to relive and recount a traumatic event that may have happened to you, but to do it as you’re being pressured and talked to harshly—and while so many eyes are on you? No wonder there’s still such a prevalent culture of silence when it comes to instances of assault and rape. One such case currently in the public eye proves so.

Young actor Sandro Muhlach recently testified in front of a Senate panel about the assault charges he filed against independent media contractors, and the way he was treated and talked to during the session—particularly by Senator Jinggoy Estrada—sheds light on how we treat victims who come forward with their stories. Artist Gerald Santos was also present to testify about he was assaulted back in 2005.

As the session delved into the details of Sandro’s experience, he was met with impatient, harsh comments like “Sige na, sabihin mo na,” You’re wasting our time here,” and “Magsasalita ba kayo o hindi?”. Sandro’s lawyer had to step in and explain that while Sandro willed himself to attend and testify in that session, it’s still not easy for him to talk about the details. The senator’s hostile demeanor angered plenty, and his insensitivity is a lesson in How Not To Talk To Victims 101.

THE BLAME AND SHAME GAME

Far too often, victims do not get the justice they deserve for one reason or another. So many perpetrators get off scot-free or with a slap on the wrist, and the victim has to live with that trauma forever. How is that fair? Shouldn’t we be advocating for victims to get the justice they deserve?

It’s common knowledge how the many forms of sexual violence and the perpetuation of rape culture are prevalent across the globe. Victim blaming and shaming, as well as forcing them to reveal the details of their assault in a triggering, hostile environment, only makes things worse and allows more people to think that they can get away with doing awful things to people.

It’s understandable that learning about what exactly happened to a victim is fundamental to getting to the truth and achieving justice. It’s also important to have an objective, critical mind when dealing with sensitive issues, especially ones involving crime. But is it necessary to approach victims with impatience, insensitivity, and hostility?

We’ve seen it with Amber Heard, who was criticized, mocked, and hated for speaking up about her abuse. We’ve seen it with people involved in the #MeToo Movement. For so long now, victims’ stories are often met with immediate disbelief, insensitivity, and criticism—especially if the figures involved are public figures.

There are far more instances of rape than there are instances of false accusations, and yet collective common actions and reactions, such as calling victims liars or dismissing their stories because they’re either not the “perfect victim” or “they can’t tell their story well” so often shames them into silence. With reliving the trauma, the societal pressure, the fear of not being believed, and the apprehension that they’ll be shunned for speaking up, no wonder so many abuses are not reported.

Besides having to recount the details of their assault, victims have do so in front of so many people—from the hospital staff to court, family and friends to even the Senate, in this case. For some, like celebrities, the entire world is witness to their troubles. Why must we approach them with so much pressure and hostility?

WHAT WE OWE EACH OTHER

Sen. Jinggoy Estrada has since apologized for his behavior during the Sandro Muhlach case, saying it was never his intention to victim blame or humiliate. But this instance is not a one-off across the board. So many victims get treated the same way, and it only highlights the many hindrances to achieving justice.

We owe it to each other as people to be kind and compassionate. Would you treat a friend who underwent a traumatic event the same way Sandro and so many other victims were treated? We also owe it to others and ourselves to exert an effort to understand context and differing perspectives in order to get to the truth without causing even more mental and emotional distress. Experts are trained to address issues like this in sensitive, compassionate ways, and everyone, from lawmakers to strangers online, should consider following in their example.

Public shaming, pressure, and hostility only serve to silence victims and make them fearful of coming out with their stories. It’s high time we exercise more compassion for people who are brave enough to tell their stories as they seek justice.

A defining trait of TikTok is how anyone, and we mean anyone, can start a viral dance trend. This holds especially true for fans and other users who create their own choreography to their fave musicians’ songs that eventually blow up on the app and beyond. But some fan-started dance challenges go so viral, that not only does the artist of the song see it, but they even include it in the official choreography as the ultimate form of acknowledgment.

Imagine flexing that the choreography you made at home was used by an A-list musician and being performed in arenas around the world. We’d never stop talking about it. Scroll down for a few moments when stars turned a fan dance trend into the real deal.

We been knew Taylor sees what her Swifties say and do, and that includes viral dance trends. Back in 2022, Filipino TikTok creator Mikael Arellano went viral for the dance moves he created for the superstar’s song Bejeweled. Not only did it become a trend on TikTok, but Taylor incorporated the move in the track’s official choreography during the Eras Tour. The cherry on top? Mikael watched her do it live and was chosen to receive the 22 hat during the record-breaking tour’s Philadelphia stop.

MEGAN THEE STALLION IN MAMUSHI

Megan is no stranger to her songs going viral on TikTok thanks to dance challenges. But it warms the heart knowing the Houston rapper incorporates those dances into her work. Such is the case for her hit track, Mamushi (ft. Yuki Chiba). You probably saw the viral dance challenge started by @mona712_official, and Megan did, too, as she not only did the dance during her tour, but made it official by doing it in Mamushi’s cinematic and Japanese culture-inspired music video.

DOJA CAT IN SAY SO

The OG queen of going viral on TikTok. You couldn’t go anywhere on the app in 2020 without hearing Say So, and that was mainly thanks to the dance TikTok creator Haley Sharpe made for the song (you know the one). The routine was peak pandemic, and Doja, in recognition of its uber virality and helping the song do as well as it did, included the dance in the track’s 70s-themed music video. Even Haley made a cameo in the video during the roller rink portion. We love to see it.

TINASHE IN NASTY

Tinashe got a much-deserved boost in attention recently when her track, Nasty, went viral on TikTok. But the reason why makes it even better. A TikTok video from a user named Nates.Vibe performing Caribbean “wine” dance moves with a partner as Nasty was edited in the background music ricocheted across the platform. The moves became the unofficial dance to the song, but it became official after Tinashe acknowledged the trend and incorporated the moves into her performances.  The internet works in mysterious ways, doesn’t it?

Even Charli herself has done it so you know the dance is brat-approved.

The trend has been popping off online with multiple celebrities jumping aboard the hype train. It’s gotten to the point where Sarah herself is aware of it and danced it on stage. Imagine getting to say Sarah Geronimo danced to moves you made? We’d never shut up about it.

One good thing TikTok has brought to the world is a space to discover and rediscover things, music, and media that may have slipped our collective consciousness. WBK the platform has major influence on the music and media industry. Songs in particular, besides finding success through going viral on TikTok, are often given new life in a variety of contexts orchestrated by creators on the platform—no matter how old the songs are.

The song itself—its lyrics, mood, or intended message—still matters, but not as much as how people are setting and following the trend. Whether the song is used for comedic purposes or to make edits of Internet crushes, these trends get tracks blowing up online, leading to people checking them out, streaming them, and even getting them charting years after their release! At present, some of these OPM classics may have crossed your FYPs, and here’s why.

It’s not the first time a ballad has gone viral not for what it is, but because people online have set it as the backdrop for their dogshow-style videos. Sarah Geronimo’s rendition Maybe This Time, from her 2014 movie of the same name, has found traction on TikTok because of a comedic dance started by a student, @donotdisturb869 on TikTok, and eventually covered by everybody from Kween Yasmin to SB19’s Stell.

Because, really, sometimes, all you can do is laugh. (But for real…danas.)

And one of the stars that has been receiving attention recently is Gen Z actress Hyacinth Callado, who plays Elyse Ledezma. Now that Elyse, and, by extension, Hyacinth, are finally taking center stage, the actress has been on many people’s radar, and for good reason. Get to know more about this rising 20-year-old actress and cat mom (she has a cat named Avem) below.

SHE’S ORIGINALLY FROM THE US

HYACINTH CALLADO IS FROM THE US

Hyacinth, who was named after the flower, was born and raised in San Francisco and moved to the Philippines with her parents after she graduated high school. Her family is based in Bacolod, though Hyacinth moved to Manila to pursue her acting career. As you can imagine, she’s more comfortable speaking English than Tagalog, but she is taking lessons to improve her fluency in the language.

THE UNIVERSITY SERIES IS HER ACTING DEBUT

HYACINTH CALLADO ACTING DEBUT UNIVERSITY SERIES

After she moved to the Philippines, Hyacinth began her showbiz career when she was discovered and signed by Viva to be one of their artists. From there, she put in the work and participated in acting workshops before she got her big break when she auditioned for and got the role of the cheerleader Elyse in Safe Skies, Archer. Now, she has her first leading role in a series, with potentially more projects in the future.

SHE STARTED AS A MUSICIAN

HYACINTH CALLADO IS A MUSICIAN

While Hyacinth is known as an actress these days, the young personality is a musician by trade. Hyacinth is a performer and began her journey in entertainment as a musician. Even growing up in the US, Hyacinth was familiar with OPM as legends like Regine Velasquez and Erik Santos were constantly played in her household. To this day, she still flexes her musical talents, such as singing the theme song of Chasing in the Wild, Aabutin Ang Tadhana

SHE’S VOCAL ABOUT SOCIAL ISSUES

HYACINTH CALLADO SUPPORTS SOCIAL CAUSES

The Gen Z actress often uses her platform to speak up on social issues and has an Instagram stories highlight dedicated to causes she talks about. Some advocacies she’s voiced support for include racial and social justice, Black Lives Matter, and, most recently, advocating for a ceasefire in Palestine. It’s nice to see that the glare of the public spotlight hasn’t dimmed Hyacinth’s desire to stand up for what’s right.

SHE RUNS A FACEBOOK PAGE DEDICATED TO MENTAL HEALTH

HYACINTH CALLADO RUNS A FB PAGE

Hyacinth’s support for advocacies goes beyond just posting stories on IG. She also runs a Facebook page called Silakbo – Rant & Release that aims to be a safe space for people to feel their feels.

“I hope this space gives a reminder that, all your negative feelings, issues etc, are valid and important. No matter how small or unimportant you may think they are. Remember one of the first steps to getting to know yourself and emotions, is by acknowledging and talking about all of them,” she wrote in one of the page’s first posts. While she doesn’t post often on the account these days, it’s still admirable for Hyacinth to use her platform to help further destigmatize mental health in the Philippines.

YOU MIGHT HAVE SPOTTED HER IN A COUPLE OF MUSIC VIDEOS

Your hair will thank you.

With the new Dove Hya+Ceramide Treatment Mask, it’s time to #CompleteTheCare and experience a repair regimen like no other.

You’ve just stepped out of the shower, your hair still damp and freshly washed with your favorite shampoo and conditioner. It smells divine, feels smooth to the touch, and you think you’ve done enough to keep your hair healthy. But as the day goes on, the frizz begins to creep back, the ends start to feel a little rough, and that elusive salon-fresh shine seems to fade away. Sound familiar?

This scenario is all too common, and it might have you wondering: is shampoo and conditioner really enough to keep your hair in top shape? The truth is, while these two steps are essential, they’re only the beginning. Your hair faces daily challenges—heat styling, environmental stress, color treatments—that can cause significant damage over time. And that’s where a complete care routine comes into play.

First Things First: What’s Missing?

While shampoo and conditioner are essential for your daily routine, they only address part of what your hair truly needs. Exposure to heat styling, environmental pollutants, and chemical treatments can wreak havoc on your hair, leaving it dull, dry, and damaged—concerns that are hard to reverse with just the basics. That’s where the missing piece in your hair care routine comes in: a treatment mask designed to tackle these deeper issues.

Hair treatment masks go beyond the surface-level benefits of shampoo and conditioner. They penetrate deeply into the hair shaft, targeting the damage that regular cleansing and conditioning can’t fully repair. These treatments are formulated to address specific concerns like weakened strands, split ends, and roughness, providing nourishment and protection where your hair needs it most. This is why incorporating a treatment mask into your routine is crucial for achieving healthy, resilient hair that can withstand daily wear and tear.

Why You Need a 3-Step Damage Care Routine

When it comes to finding the right treatment, the Dove Hya+Ceramide Treatment Mask is a game-changer. Infused with patented Bio-Protein Care technology and hya+ceramide, this mask delivers a powerful punch against hair damage. The Bio-Protein Care technology dives deep into the hair fibers, reinforcing their structure and resilience, while hya+ceramide works wonders by rebuilding the hair’s outer protective layer after intense damage.

Together, these ingredients offer a comprehensive repair solution, strengthening your hair from within and shielding it from future harm. If you’re still wondering whether adding a treatment mask to your routine is worth it, consider this: your hair’s health is similar to your skincare routine. Just as you wouldn’t skip moisturizer after cleansing, your hair shouldn’t be without the benefits that treatment masks provide.

Shampoo and conditioner work to clean and condition your hair, but the Dove Hya+Ceramide Treatment Mask takes things a step further, delivering the intense care and protection your hair needs to truly thrive. The mask tackles 10 signs of damage, from dryness and frizz to split ends and roughness, helping your hair bounce back to its best condition and keeping it looking and feeling fabulous.

“Very Demure, Very Mindful”: Why Is Everybody Suddenly Saying It?

Very demure~

We’re being very demure, very mindful, very considerate by letting you know why everybody’s suddenly so demure.

At this point, we’re all too familiar with how a simple word or phrase can change the course of everybody’s life (because now we all won’t stop saying it). From IJBOL to charot, certain slang terms have entered our lexicon and refused to leave. Case in point: the most recent phrase on everyone’s minds and social media pages, after “brat,” is “very demure, very mindful.”

Used to refer to a certain type of demeanor or behavior in certain situations, the phrase is now undergoing what slang terms usually go through—which is basically be used over and over and over again across all media, twisted and turned on its head as people make it their own, and get questioned by people annoyed at hearing it again and again or people who have no idea why everyone is suddenly repeating the same phrase. But let’s unpack this very demurely, very mindfully—where exactly did this new trend come from?

DEMURE ORIGINS

“Very demure, very mindful” was started by trans beauty influencer and makeup artist Jools Lebron, who posted a TikTok video about her makeup and looks for a job interview.

“See how I do my makeup for work? Very demure, very mindful. I don’t come to work with a green cut-crease. I don’t do too much—I’m very mindful while I’m at work,” she says in the TikTok. “See how I look very presentable? The way I came to the interview is the way I go to the job. A lot of you girls go to the interview looking like Marge Simpson and go to the job looking like Patty and Selma, not demure. I’m very modest, I’m very mindful. Be mindful of why they hired you.”

Jools was referencing her own experiences, having done over-the-top makeup at a previous job. She’s also done follow-up videos to the “demure” series, talking about how to be demure and mindful when ordering room service, when partying, or even when at the airport.

From the cadence to the message to the satirical humor, Jools’ video sticks with you. And clearly, it’s stuck with everyone, as within days, everyone—from random X users to celebrities—has adopted the meme, used it themselves, and even turned it on its head.

SO VERY MINDFUL

Though it doesn’t stray too far from the actual meaning of the words, to be demure and mindful (and any other adjective now attached to the meme, like “considerate” or “cutesy”) is to exhibit “proper” behaviors in certain situations. Demure itself is a way to describe someone who is reserved, quiet, and modest. But Jools, and the rest of the Internet, are redefining what it means to be demure.

For the most part, it’s about not doing too much, but without letting yourself be a passive doormat. You have to be mindful and considerate, not messy—very demure.

It’s not anything like a PSA to be demure in the sense that you should be “prim and proper”, though. At its core, it’s satire—it’s now gone on to mean to poke fun at what it means to be traditionally demure and simply embrace being confident, considerate, and self-aware.

Like many other terminologies and slang words, it now takes on a life of its own—not entirely separate, but different, from its original form. Being very demure, very mindful, has become a running joke, a satirization. People use it not in the sense that they’re seriously pushing to be demure in the dictionary definition way, but in humorous, clever ways to show contrast in behavior.

Add demure to the long list of trends, slang, and memes that make their way to the larger public consciousness. Trans person of color Jools once again shows how so much of language and modern internet culture is rooted in minorities, from queer people to people of color. It’s also fascinating to see how people can change or add to language, creating their own ways to communicate certain messages—in this case, a message of demurity (yes, we said demurity) and mindfulness.

It’s also great when people get their dues. For instance, Jools has revealed that her “demure” series has allowed her to score brand deals and hosting gigs—as well as finance her transition! See, social media can be used for the good.
