How A Roadside Cart Moved A Nation To Action: All There Is To Learn From The Emergence Of The Community Pantry

line
From the side of the road to the rest of the country, kindness goes a long way.

Tiny, nondescript, but powerful, the humble community pantry has proven that when push comes to shove, people will come together in kindness and compassion.

Magbigay ayon sa kakayahan, kumuha ng batay sa pangangailangan,” and so goes the moral code that sets precedent to every community pantry that has now become a fixture of function in every many streets across the country. Shifting from a singular inspiring story to a phenomenon that has inspired a nation to action, this is more than just the snaking long lines that lead up to the mostly make-shift spots. Whether driven by necessity or the human urge to help, the community pantry has trickled into the consciousness of the citizens, expanding their perspectives beyond their immediate periphery.

Ang hirap mabuhay ngayon. Affected ‘yung negosyo ko, wala masyadong pumapasok na income. And ‘yung sakto lang ‘yung meron ako sa everyday na gastusin. Ang goal lang natin is mabuhay and mag-survive, tapos magpalakas.

Driven by a sense of survival that is beyond her, the community pantry that she began in Maginhawa stood to be a radical act in itself. Easy to set up, with no strict requirements, other than the currency of honesty and safety health protocols, and best of all, free, this was defiant in its decision to fill the obscenely gaping void left unattended by the blatant mismanagement of the government in this unrelenting crisis. It is nothing out-the-ordinary. Occupying a roadside space in Maginhawa, in a city of concerning unemployment and poverty, the community pantry stood there—tiny, nondescript, but powerful.

“Natuwa po ako na kino-continue po ng mga tao at na-appreciate ko po ‘yung response, masaya po ako,” Non continues. “Pero at the same time, hindi mawawala ‘yung lungkot na siguro kaya din nila isinet-up ito kasi nakita nila ‘yung pangangailangan ng mga kababayan nila, mga ka-community nila.”

The Community Pantry Has Exposed The Gaps In The Pandemic Response

There is a lot to unpack here, and we are not just speaking of the goods that have been donated, because as impressive and motivating as it is, we have to be mindful of the problems and issues that have thoroughly crippled the country today. Riddled by record unemployment and economic inflation, as well as of the dismal cash assistance tepidly distributed by the government and its agencies, the simple rational of the citizen-led community pantry initiative now growing exponentially across the Philippines is the response desperately needed for families to survive.

Here, it is the people who are practically left on their own by the fundamental refusal of responsibility of the powers that may be that are doing the work they should be doing—feeding, helping, and giving hope to the most vulnerable. No longer able to stomach another day of families subsisting on what isn’t even close to the bare minimum, it is the ordinary people that are taking matters into their own hands. There is no more “bahala na” in this situation. To assuage dread and desperation, the collective feeling of doing something has risen—and it hasn’t relented to this day.

Nililigtas po natin ang mga tao. Salubungan po ‘yung tulungan,” says Ana Patricia Non, expressing how the community pantry meets the people and its needs to where they are. “Ito po talaga ang kailangan ngayon.”

Where Systems Fail, The People Come Together

Hunger and poverty isn’t an isolated case, and it has been made more clear in the pandemic. With figures dangling at the range of 7.6 million households, 2.2 million of which accounts itself as severe, nearly a third of the Philippine population are being deprived of the basic right to eat. Further more, 10.9 million Filipinos have lost jobs in collateral to the COVID-19 crisis. And instead of coming in to make lives easier, as they are mandated to do, the government has concerned itself with other matters other than the coronavirus, which also has seen record-breaking numbers of active cases as of late.

Clearly, the systems that are meant to service the Filipino people have failed and while the rest are languishing, the people took it upon themselves to make things a little better in their own way. Spreading across the far regions of the country, the community pantry has struck a chord among many, perhaps illustrating that it doesn’t take much to help, even with the meager finances at our disposal.

Ang community pantry, hindi siya judgmental. Kahit gaano kalaki o gaano kaliit ang kaya mo ibigay, tatanggapin namin,” assures Non. “Malaya ‘yung pantry.

The Community Pantry Is An Act Of Deliberate Resilience

It is easy to understand why at this point, people have grown weary to the word, resilience. Despite being glorified and romanticized to distract from the real issues at hand, it cannot be denied how even at the expense of the people and their limits, the community pantry is a rousing act of resilience that has taken the country by storm. Unlike in the context of typhoons, where resilience takes over ratified response and relief operations, there is no top-down leader in this growing sense of community. Here, where everything is horizontal and equal, the people, with their energy and pride ushered into its proper lanes of expenditures, are saying: today, we will survive.

Think about it: we wouldn’t have been backed into this corner had there been a more strict and swift action that is backed by science and pertinent policies. Just like the storms that we face, the pandemic is a brute force of nature that we should have been prepared for. So, instead of trailing the rest of the world as it inches towards a semblance of normal, we are left on our own yet again.

But this time, there seems to be a stronger will to reclaim resilience from being peddled as a character trait unique to our race. Instead, we are using it for character development at the grassroots level. With the human ability to coordinate and communicate, the concept of the community pantry is a further illustration of how we can achieve cultural marvels in history and evolution. Who else to help each other out but ourselves, right?

Helping Is A Cycle

Doing is everything. And it doesn’t even take something groundbreaking to get the ball rolling. From the bamboo cart in Maginhawa to community libraries, community pawntries (a version for pets), and a rainbow community pantry, everyone will want to help. “Hindi naman po siya charity na isa lang po ang tinutulungan,” reasons Ana Patricia Non. “Kelangan ng extra support sa mamayan.

Asking nothing return, the effect of compassion is circular. Take Tatay Elmer Cordero for example, one of the jeepney drivers of the Piston 6 unjustly arrested and put to jail by the police last year. Recalling the help that was extended to him in his moment of struggle, he says it his turn to give back through the “Tulong Obrero Community Pantry” that was put up for the drivers with no source of income. “Panahon naming ngayon para tumulong at magbigay dahil napakarami pa ring nangangailangan.”

Expanding its reach far than one might think, the effect of the community pantry ripples beyond the lines and bags of goods. The amount they will be able to save from the efforts of the community, for example, means money saved for other pressing matters in the family: mobile online learning classes, utilities, rent, fare for commuting…the list goes on. Needless to say, it is a lot, especially for the 4 million Filipinos who were unemployed this year alone. More than just feeding them food, this undertaking essentially guarantees them a future. Resilience, in this overarching situation, means seeing better things, which you want to actually live through.

No matter where you look at it from, the community pantry gets them through the day.

See, when people are made to feel like people, when you trust them, when you let them do what they can, they will do it. There is no grandstanding, no name-calling, no bureaucracy—just pure kindness.

The Spirit Of Community Will Not Be Stopped

While the community pantry isn’t perfect, especially in its early days, it certainly has found its footing as evidenced by the adoption of like-minded citizens and LGUs in their own corners of the country. But for all the steps forward it has taken, being able to give families equal opportunities at sustenance, the system of sociality that was in place was robbed from giving more, because it has fallen prey to the malicious red-tagging and misinformed reports of alleged links to the operatives of the communist party in the Philippines. Vehemently denied by Ana Patricia Non, whose only intent was to help those she can in the best way she knows how, the community pantry in Maginhawa halted its functions for a day, just to be able to clear things with the task force involved, as well as of the police force and local government office.

In spite of this, the hunger to help grew stronger beyond the humble street in Quezon City. Donations were reallocated and families lining up were told to return the next day or redirected to nearby community pantry spots. More efforts and undertakings sprang forth, proving that you cannot put an end to the good and the spirit of community.

It is a tale as old as time. The more you force a narrative that is far from the actual truth, the more it will become a bigger, booming voice that tells the story as it should. The more people are told not to do something, the more they will be encouraged to do so, especially when there is no harm done. This is the ultimate nature of bayanihan and no amount of ego can stall its progress to higher ground. With no end on sight, it’s all systems go for the community pantry, except this time, more people are at it, holding accountability and responsibility where others have failed to do so.

With every step taken in the name of bayanihan and resilience, we are reminded again of what sits at the core of the community pantry: Take what you need, give what you can. In this deliberate exchange, a lot more can be taken away than just the tangible essentials. Only time will tell, but who knows, this could signal the start of a better, healthier, more compassionate Philippines.

And it goes without saying, for what its worth in the streets: kindness really goes a long way.

The Workwear Brand That Avril Lavigne Loved Wearing is Back in Manila

There's a reason why the Sk8r Boi era was huge.

Dickies is back with a vengeance and we are here for it. The brand has been worn by several music icons like Avril Lavigne, Gwen Stefani, and even TLC.

AVRIL LAVIGNE WEARING DICKIES WITH HER SIGNATURE NECKTIE

Music and pop culture were the key elements in catapulting the brand into mainstream consciousness way back when. Its tough yet laidback vibe has always resonated with most of its most loyal fans growing up. Take for example Avril Lavigne who wore Dickies religiously during her Sk8r Boi era. It was a major milestone for the brand, considering their scope then involved mostly men, and the likes of rappers such as Tupac, N.W.A., and Eminem. Don’t deny it, at some point, you wanted your own Dickies, too.

In the Philippines, Dickies became a staple over the years, especially because of the affordable price tag and stand-alone stores. Let’s not forget about the local skate culture as well. As staple as it is, the brand has since seen a shift, which prompted a reintroduction of a bigger legacy that the brand has always championed: classic workwear.

Breaking Barriers Up In Here: Converse Champions Diversity With Its Troop Of All Stars

line
“Listen, ito ang kwento namin.”

Continuing its disruption through sports, pop culture, and the arts, Converse unites unique perspectives for its all-important message of breaking barriers.

We’ve all heard it before: creating opportunity, amplifying voices, and breaking barriers. Running the range of gaps that need to be filled, such as inclusion, representation, and equality, these are the necessary truths we must confront in order to encourage a future that is rid of division and injustice. No one believes this more than global footwear and apparel brand, Converse. Apart from its iconic All Star sneakers connecting the stories of generations, it has also built a legacy of disruption that has encouraged change across communities.

Whether it be championing women’s rights and LGBTQIA+ pride, Converse has constantly been doing its fair share of breaking barriers over time. Encouraging a culture of action and authenticity, as seen through its integration in sports, entertainment, and arts, it continues its story of change, this time zeroing in on unity and the Filipino spirit.

Breaking Barriers

“Now is our time to break barriers and change our story,” and so goes the overarching message of Converse in its latest campaign. Realized in an edgy video laced with the rhythm and poetry of the Filipino language, the challenges we face are set into context. “But at times we pretend to hide just to break the divide,” the narrative continues as we are by this time introduced to the diverse assemblage of All Star who are raring and ready to change the game. Despite obvious differences, these individuals come together as one tribe united under the banner of our nation’s colors, including the symbolic three stars and a sun.

Led by actress, beauty queen, and UNAIDS Goodwill ambassador, Pia Wurtzback the Filipino All Star team breaking barriers include Timmy Albert (rising musician), Pauline Gaston (volleyball player), Dora Dorado (social media star and activist), Garren Jersey Evangelista (multimedia artist), David Murrell (aspiring pro-basketball rookie), and Kyline Alcantara (singer and primetime teen actress). Together, they are focused on amplifying the voice of those who need to speak their truth, compel breaking free from social injustice, and hero Filipino pride.

“Many Filipinos face the barriers of social and economic injustice. These existing barriers have been present for decades, and Filipinos are aware of these barriers, yet a majority of the nation believe these cases are helpless and unsolvable,” says Pia Wurtzbach. “Keep fighting for your dreams and inspire others to fight for theirs, too. There’s plenty of space for everyone and it’s time everyone shines for their uniqueness.”

You Are An All Star, Too

All it takes is that one spark to ignite the fire within a community—and this is the very proposition of breaking barriers that these unique individuals are fighting for. “As a student and artist, the steps to break down barriers start with the platform and voice we are gifted with. Speaking up is a start and cannot be understated. The platforms that we have can be utilized as an opportunity – to bring the Filipino people together,” explains Timmy Albert. Echoing this, Dora Dorado says that all it takes is an intention and action. “You converse. You talk and listen. And you keep doing what you are doing. Watching people continue doing what they love, is an inspiring act in itself. You never know the lengths your ripples will go.”

Despite the injustices that continue to plague our country, as well as of the pervasive division, the All Star team believe that the Filipinos will not only withstand, but completely break down these barriers once and for all. “Equality is for everyone and not just for some,” the voice in the video continues. “Sama sama tayo, we are all equal.”

With a stake in the future we want to define for ourselves, the goal is simple: to inspire change and to continue breaking barriers with you. After all, you are an All Star in your own right. The story changes now. Are you in?

SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS

6 Things Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings Has Gotten Right So Far

line
Shang-Chi is already shaping up to be a great movie.

It’s only the first teaser trailer, but Shang-Chi is showing promising signs that Marvel’s first-ever Asian led superhero movie knows exactly what it’s doing.

Related: Could This Filipino Superhero Be Making An Appearance In The Marvel Cinematic Universe Soon?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the most popular movie franchise in modern movie history. Ever since the first Iron Man came out in 2008, each entry in the MCU has gotten bigger and better while breaking records along the way. Yet, there is something Marvel has been lacking, and that is with Asian representation. But after 24 movies in the MCU, the time has come for an Asian-led Marvel movie and we got our first look at it with the release of Shang-Chi’s teaser trailer on Monday. It’s only the first look but we’re already excited for the movie. Here are 6 things Shang-Chi has gotten right so far.

It has an Asian lead

While this is quite obvious, it still is amazing to see an Asian be the lead of an MCU film. 24 films have been released in the MCU before Shang-Chi, and not a single one featured an Asian lead. At best, they are relegated to side characters. But now, Asians finally have an Asian superhero to look up to with Simu Liu playing Shang-Chi.

It has a stacked Asian cast

The movie just doesn’t have an Asian lead, it also has a stacked Asian supporting cast. Awkwafina is going to play Katy, Shang-Chi’s best friend in America, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung is playing Wenwu, Shang-Chi’s father, and Michelle Yeoh is going to be Jiang Nah. As we get closer to the movie’s release date of September 2021, we will get more details of the Asian cast.

It has Asian representation behind the camera as well

The Asian representation also extends behind the camera. Shang-Chi’s director is Destin Daniel Cretton, who is of Japanese descent. His previous work includes Just Mercy (2019) and the underrated Short Term 12 (2013). One of the film’s scriptwriters is Dave Callaham who is of Chinese descent. His previous writing credits include Godzilla (2014), Zombieland: Double Tap (2019), and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020).

It has Asians playing Asian characters

SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS

If you are wondering why this is here, it is important to know that Hollywood has a long history of non-Asian actors playing Asian characters like in Breakfast at Tiffany’s when a white actor played a Japanese man. The MCU is guilty of this as well. In the lore of Doctor Strange, The Ancient One is a Tibetan monk, but in the movies, the character is played by Tilda Swinton, a white British actress.

It aims to tell a more accurate story of the Asian experience

When the Shang-Chi comics first started in the 70s, they were filled with racists stereotypes of Asians. So, for the movie, the filmmakers decided to update the story for a more accurate portrayal of Asians. Speaking to EW, Simu Liu said that “…when we first started to map out who this character was and what his journey was going to be over the course of the film, we were all very sensitive to not have it go into stereotypical territory.” The movie’s director adds that he “wanted to tell a story about Asian identity that felt as lived-in and authentic as possible.”

It features Asian artists in the soundtrack

While not many details have been confirmed about Shang-Chi’s soundtrack, the teaser trailer offers a glimpse of what songs could be featured in the movie. If you pay close attention, you can hear the voice of GOT7 member Jackson Wang in the track that accompanies the trailer. 88 Rising also shared the trailer on their Instagram, possibly hinting at more things to come. In any case, we can’t wait to see which other Asian artists will be on the soundtrack.

Here's why labels should truly matter.

Save Ralph, the 4-minute stop-motion film that went viral for exposing animal testing is a step forward towards more cruelty-free products.

If labels still don’t matter to you, it’s high time that it should. Just this month, a short mockumentary starring a bunny named Ralph showed the ugly truth behind animal testing in cosmetics. With a blind eye, ear, and chemical burns on his body, he says, “At the end of the day, we do it for the humans, right? They’re far superior to us animals.” As the film progressed, we see Ralph and the other bunnies locked up in the lab, moments before they were tortured. The film by The Humane Society of the United States currently has over 3 million views and has sparked movements and petitions around the globe to save the animals from being testers.

If this is the first time you have ever heard of the group, here are 5 things you need to know about them.

They are a 7-member group

The group is comprised of 7 members: Love, the leader and main vocalist of the group, KB, the lead rapper, vocalist, visual, and eldest member of the group, Rie, the lead vocalist and lead dancer of the group, Yoojung, the main dancer, visual, and vocalist of the group, Junji, the lead vocalist and lead dancer of the group, Mill, the main rapper and vocalist of the group, and Nine, the vocalist, and maknae of the group. All 7 members are Koreans.

They are just two years old

The group debuted on May 28, 2019, with two songs: time leap and Savanna. They were formed by RSVP and 8D Creative. Their latest release is their mini-album, Instinct, Pt.1, which was released on April 8, 2021.

There is a meaning behind the group’s name

OnlyOneOf means being the one and only to someone. This is to reflect the group’s aspirations to become the one and only to their fans. Speaking of fans, they are called lyOn, which symbolizes that they will always be there to support and protect the boys like a lion.

They make their own songs and choreography

The members have a lot of autonomy and creative freedom when it comes to their music and performances. KB and Nine are considered as the producer line because they have credits in many of their songs. Rie, meanwhile, is known to choreograph many of OnlyOneOf’s performances.

libidO means exactly what you think it means

In the description to the music video of libidO, it says that the song “shares the boy’s impulsive mind through the expressions of S. Freud. The mind’s energy “libidO” is considered as a feeling that shouldn’t be openly talked about in real life and should be concealed, so its existence is often denied. However, the more the boy tries to suppress “libidO,” the stronger it gets and the more impact it has on his subconscious behavior.” Sigmund Freud described libido as the hidden desire or wanting of the human person. Based on the video, it isn’t hard to tell what hidden desire the boys want.

libidO’s concept isn’t far off from their previous concepts

The libidO MV shocked many people because it was rare to see a K-pop group explore taboo themes. However, if you look at OnlyOneOf’s past work, you would see that they have a penchant for mature themes. In a few of their past videos, the group uses the concepts of religion and art. Some of their songs have also dealt with sexuality.

This isn’t the first time they have gone viral

The name OnlyOneOf may sound new to you, but you may have come across some of their previous viral content. You may have seen their dance covers of Savage Remix by Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé, Don’t Start Now by Dua Lipa, or MALAMENTE’ by Rosalía. They have also done reworks of other K-pop songs like Dolphin by OH MY GIRL and Spring Day by BTS. You may have come across one of their TikTok videos as well.

Each one of them will be aiming to get the country's first-ever gold medal.

These 19 Filipino athletes have excelled in their respective sports and are now going to represent the country in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In the 2016 Rio Olympics, 13 Filipino athletes represented the Philippines. Among those proudly wearing the colors of the country, only one won a medal: Hidilyn Diaz who won a silver in weightlifting. This time, the country is sending 19 athletes to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This is the country’s largest delegation since the 2000 Sydney Olympics and with 10 of the 19 athletes being females, the most Filipino women to participate at a single Olympics in years. After a year-long delay due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Tokyo Olympics are set to go from July 23 – August 8, 2021. Here are the 19 Filipino athletes who have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics and we’re rooting for.

Bianca Pagdanganan (Golf)

Like Yuka, Bianca has her fair share of medals like when she and Yuka won gold together during the 2018 Asian Games. In the same event, Bianca also won bronze for the individual event. She also took home a gold medal during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

Juvic Pagunsan (Golf)

6 Incredible AC Bonifacio Dance Covers On Her YouTube Channel

line
Be prepared to get blown away by her amazing dance talents.

From BTS to BLACKPINK, AC Bonifacio has covered them all. Here are 6 of her dance covers on her YouTube channel that is a must-watch for any fan.

AC Bonifacio is a young woman of many talents. You may have seen one of her viral dance videos on TV in one of her many guest appearances, or even in the fifth season of Riverdale where she played Star Vixen. Having assumed so many roles over the years, there is no denying that she is an insanely talented dancer. She can dance with the best of them and her dance covers on her YouTube channel prove it. Here are 6 of her best dance covers that you need to watch right now.

BLACKPINK – How You Like That

Currently the most viewed video on her channel, AC Bonifacio’s dance cover of How You Like That is everything you want in a dance cover and more. Slick moves, attention-grabbing stage presence, and well-put-together costumes are just some things to expect in this video. It is commendable that AC was able to include music video accurate details in the video such as having Jennie’s blonde highlights and Lisa’s bob cut, but unique enough to make the style feel her own. It’s no wonder then that this video won AC the official How You Like That dance cover competition.

BTS – Dynamite

Always count on AC Bonifacio to make any choreography look effortless. Her cover of BTS’s 2020 smash hit oozes cool, fun style. She breezes through the song with ease and come to think of it, her blue plaid outfit wouldn’t look out-of-place in the actual Dynamite music video. Plus points since she filmed part of the video in the same location featured in TWICE’S Likey music video.

BLACKPINK – Lovesick Girls

AC’S dance cover of Lovesick Girls is the embodiment of the saying “when you’re in a group, but you do all the work.” She serves four different outfits for every member and films in different locations to highlight each part. She gives every part justice and it does not feel like a certain part was given priority over the other. Dancing just comes so naturally to AC Bonifacio and you can see it in this dance cover.

BTS – ON

Production-wise, this is one of AC’s best videos. When BTS first premiered ON, they did it with a grand video to match the song and AC does that, too. Starting off with a group of drummers, AC goes full force in this video, dance break included. There is almost like this toughness that AC projects that makes this dance cover even better.

EXO – Love Shot

Short but sweet, AC Bonifacio manages to give it her all in this dance cover. Her cover is actually a collaboration with Dasuri Choi, and both of them kill it as they match the sensual energy of the song with the hard-hitting choreography. The only problem with the video is that it’s too short and needs to be longer.

BLACKPINK – Pretty Savage

Currently her most recent dance cover, AC Bonifacio ate this up and left no crumbs. AC’s dancing skills are on full display here. She also looks amazing in her four separate BLACKPINK inspired outfits with special mention going to her Jennie-inspired look and customized basketball jersey similar to what Rosé wore. The surprise near the end is what brings this video above and beyond.
