Here’s How We Made Barbie Forteza’s Head-Turning NYLON Manila Cover Shoot

Baddie Barbie.

They say it takes a village to raise a child, or in this case, make Barbie Forteza’s cover shoot a reality.

It was like the perfect storm. It was the first cover of our new era, July was the release of the Barbie movie, and it was also Barbie Forteza’s birth month. It felt obvious to put one of the most famous Filipina Barbies on our next cover. But more than just a cover fit for the moment, our fanzine with Barbie Forteza was one of new beginnings, eras, and how we can always move towards a bigger and better chapter.

In the same way we were entering a new era, so too was Barbie, who was fresh off the runaway success of Maria Clara at Ibarra. July was the cover for breaking new and uncharted territory. Want to know how it went down? We’re here to give you a behind-the-scenes peek into how this cover went from idea to reality.

NEW ERA BARBIE

When we came together to brainstorm who should be on our July cover, we admittedly cycled through quite a few names (some of which you probably will see in future covers) before we landed on Barbie. Barbie is the moment, and when her name was brought up, we knew we had a winner. Once our cover star was agreed upon, we moved on to the concept for the shoot, which was spearheaded by Kenneth Dimaano, and we soon landed on an unleashed Barbie Forteza who was ready to pave the road her own way.

We all know Barbie Forteza in her shows and movies. But what we aimed for with this cover was a Barbie like you’ve never seen her before. If people thought that we would turn her into a Barbie doll, we swerved left to envision the actress as the Bratz doll of your dreams, the one you were dying to have in the early 2000s.

“The creative direction rooted from the idea of 3 stages: unleashed, unveiled, and autonomy,” explains Kenneth Dimaano. “Departing from the conventional concept of doll houses, we unleashed her onto the open road, riding a motorbike—a symbol of fearless exploration and boundless freedom.

The second layout was influenced by the concept of “she wears too many hats” where we used pink wigs as symbolic representations of society’s expectations and the roles she has portrayed throughout her journey.

Finally, for the third layout, we removed all distractions, focusing solely on her to showcase her final form radiating empowerment, maintaining a sense of fun, and youthfulness. It emphasizes the importance of embracing one’s own voice, maintaining autonomy, and finding fulfillment in the journey of self-discovery.”

UNCHARTED TERRITORY

Once the contributors were booked and everything was set, it was on to the actual shoot, which went down at the brand-new AGC PH Studios in Estancia on a Thursday. It was a whole-day event for everyone involved in the shoot, with the day starting as early as 7 AM. But even if it was a long day, everyone brought their A-game. Stylist Ryuji Shiomitsu and his team curated pieces from local designers that complimented this edgier side of Barbie. “Inspired by the likes of Versace La Vacanza, Diesel, Blumarine S22, and Rihanna, the styling choices in all layouts reflect a departure from traditional fashion norms,” reveals Kenneth.

Violet Ocampo worked her magic for Barbie’s makeup as Jufel Gomez laid the fiercest wigs on the star. “The beauty aspect has numerous meaningful touches. One of them is the hair in the cover; we delved into the renewing era of NYLON with Barbie’s extra long blonde hair styled in a hime cut, with obvious pink tips. The symbolism behind this hair represents the arrival and reinvention associated with Barbie and NYLON’s new era through the fading pink tips,” recalls Kenneth.

Production designer Katrish Aristoki and her team brought to life the sets while Borgy Angeles’ photography immortalized Barbie’s unleashed energy. “For the photography, we knew we needed a fresh eye to translate the big idea we had in mind,” shares Kenneth. “That’s why we tapped Borgy Angeles, a young and upcoming photographer with an impeccable attention to detail and a deep understanding of youth pop culture. Our vision was to create visuals vibrant in color with a surreal texture to add a touch of whimsy and intrigue.”

As for the Kapuso Primetime Princess herself, she was nothing short of a professional, both giving the camera what needed to be given while also collaborating with us in certain aspects of the shoot. Barbie has yet to do any shoot like this. The out-of-the-box concept was one she had to get used to at the start of the shoot. But like the seasoned pro that she is, Barbie brought out that persona like how she would give a new character for her projects. “Barbie is such a professional,” gushes NYLON Manila’s Editor-in-Chief Ayn Bernos. “The concept really pushed her out of her comfort zone, but she showed up in character every time she stepped on set.”

Adds Kenneth, “Our team conceptualized the shoot while Ayn was in Brazil. We exchanged thoughts and collaborated on how to make Barbie Forteza’s cover a powerful statement that leaves an indelible mark for both her and NYLON Manila’s new era. Every detail was meticulously considered, from the set design to fashion and photography. We aimed to present a powerful and revolutionary twist to Barbie Forteza’s image.”

See more of the cover shoot by checking out the behind-the-scenes video of the shoot, which, among other things, sees Barbie share her experience on set and her life’s journey, as well as her fashion film.

Enrique Gil’s Comeback Role? A (Mistaken) Porn Star In Thailand

line
A case of mistaken identity.

Enrique Gil is back on the hill again with a movie comeback, and it’s one of his most exciting yet.

Related: The Supremo Is Back! Daniel Padilla Returns To The Big Screen With New Exciting Projects

It’s been three years since we last saw Enrique Gil act on TV and four years since he graced the silver screen. So, following his contract renewal with ABS-CBN back in April, it seems that we are due for a Quen acting comeback. And that time has finally come when he and ABS recently announced that Enrique would be making a return to the spotlight with a new movie. But it isn’t just any old film, but one of his most creatively exciting and ambitious yet as Enrique is coming back with a bang (literally). Here’s what you need to know about the actor’s comeback film project.

THE STORY

Enrique is set to star in I Am Not Big Bird, a delayed coming-of-age irreverent comedy. Set in 2000s Bangkok, the film follows Luis Carpio, who travels to the capital city of Thailand and gets mistaken for a famous porn star called Big Bird. As for what happens next, we’ll have to wait and see. The filmmakers behind this project have described the movie as one that combines humor with reality, with Enrique adding that he envisions his comeback project to make the mark not just locally, but overseas as well.

As for why Enrique went with a film like this for his comeback project, he shared that he wanted a project that was creatively different from what he has done in the past. Coming together to make this vision a reality is an assortment of production houses such as Black Sheep, ANIMA Studios, and Epicmedia. Considering how the last time Enrique worked with Black Sheep was for 2019’s Alone/Together, we’re excited to see how the movie breaks barriers even further.

CAST AND CREW

Joining Enrique in the movie as his co-stars will be Red Ollero, Nikko Natividad, and Pepe Herrera. Victor Villanueva, who directed the acclaimed Patay Na Si Hesus and digital series Beach Bros, will serve as the film’s director. Penning the script, meanwhile, will be Palanca Awardee for Best Screenplay Lilit Reyes, who wrote the screenplay for award-winning films Changing Partners and Water Lemon. They really are bringing out all the stops for this one.

HANDS-ON ENRIQUE

Enrique Gil is no stranger to the entertainment industry. But what makes I Am Not Big Bird special is that the actor takes a more hands-on approach to the project. Case in point, Enrique’s production company, Make-a-Break Productions, is coming on board the project, making him a producer on the film. He’s also had a hand in other creative aspects of the movie, such as choosing his co-stars and tweaking his lines.

FILMING IN THAILAND

Given the film’s setting, the cast and crew are set to film the project in Thailand later this year. Overseas movie for Enrique’s comeback role? We know that’s right.

RELEASE DATE

While the film doesn’t have a concrete release date yet, it is confirmed to be released locally this year. The producers also shared that they plan on sending the movie to international festivals for screenings in 2024.

4 BTS Dances You Can Thank Brian Puspos For

line
Brian, how does it feel to live our dream?

Another win for Filipino ARMYs.

Related: 8 Joint Slays By Filipino Stars and K-pop Idols

If the name Brian Puspos rings any bells, then you probably have seen some of his many choreographies and dances. The Filipino choreographer has made a name for himself as one of the most talented dancers in the industry. It’s no wonder then that not only does he have a fanbase around the world, but he’s also an in-demand choreographer to A-list musicians.

One of the biggest artists Brian has worked with is BTS. ICYDK, the members of BTS have expressed their admiration for Brian before, with Jungkook and Jimin even doing a cover of his Own It choreography. It’s a bit of a full circle moment then that Brian got to work with BTS on multiple occasions. Check out the songs this talented Pinoy dancer brought to life with his moves.

SERENDIPITY

Opening the group’s Love Yourself Her era was Serendipity, Jimin’s ethereally beautiful solo that just tickles the ears in all the right spots. And a song this graceful requires moves that do it justice, which Brian Puspos delivered when he choreographed the track. Brian, who has admitted to being Jimin biased, gave the steps beauty, elegance, and details that Jimin, who is a big fan of Brian, executed with ease. It all makes for a mesmerizing performance.

BUTTERFLY

When Brian Puspos is given the opportunity to choreograph a sentimental BTS track, you know he’s going to eat, which he did for his dance for Butterfly. With simple yet emotive steps, the choreography embodies the message of the touching track. We definitely need more full group choreographies from Brian.

MY TIME

Brian got the chance to hop on and help make the choreography for Jungkook’s My Time, his solo from the group’s Seven LP. And we’re glad he did because the moves perfectly complement Jungkook’s ode to growing up and finding his own time. Low-key, it’s one of his best performances, with the choreography being one of the main reasons why. The K-pop idol is in control of his time.

SEVEN

Brian Puspos really is living the dream given the fact that Jungkook, who is a fan of Brian, personally asked him to dance with him for his solo debut, Seven. “When JK asks you to dance, you go dance!!” shared Brian on Instagram as he went on to thank everyone who made the opportunity happen. While Brian has had a hand in making some of our fave choreographies, he went on the stage himself as part of Jungkook’s dance team for Seven, and he deserves it. The choreography gives the fun (and suggestive) bop the fun energy of a young man in love.

It’s Barbie SZN: Seven Things You Can Do To Live The Barbie Fantasy

line
So this is what it means to be a Barbie girl in a Barbie world.

Happy Barbie season!

Related: So… The Barbie Movie Is Officially Screening In The Philippines

Well, the day has finally come. It seemed like it was only yesterday that we first heard that a live-action Barbie movie was in development. And now, it’s finally out in cinemas. It almost felt as if this moment wouldn’t come when there was a chance that the MTRCB would ban the film because of the nine-dash line. But that drama was all for not, and now, fans finally have the chance to enter the Barbie Dream House and catch Greta Gerwig’s take on the iconic doll.

To say that the film has been hyped is an understatement. In the lead-up to the release of one of 2023’s most anticipated films, brands all over the world got in on the hype train with capsule collections and experiences, and that includes in the Philippines. But you know what, there’s nothing wrong with adding a little, or a lot, of pink in your life and getting in with the season. If Barbie World is where you want to be, we’ve rounded up a few things you can see, do, and buy that can help you live the fantasy.

THEMED SNACKS

The color pink and food is a combo we rarely see, except when it’s on desserts. In that case, consider us sold. And timed with the release of the film, Krispy Kreme is out with their two Barbie donut variants, the pink glazed and the bubblegum-flavored donut with a hard shell, both of which cost 70 pesos a piece. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, they also have their Cotton Candy chiller to complete the perfect Barbie dessert.

FUNTABULOUS DAYCATION

If Babrie’s Malibu Dream House on Airbnb has got you feeling FOMO, don’t worry, because you can also feel like you’re living in Barbie’s abode in Manila. From now until July 23, Okada Manila is running their Funtabulous Daycation package, which will have guests cooling in Cove Manila’s indoor pool and luxury cabanas that were decorated to look as if they were taken straight from Barbieland. Barbie’s Dream Rest Day can be yours for as low as 900 pesos, with bookings only possible between Thursday to Sunday.

BARBIE BLING

What’s a Barbie ‘fit without some bling? Luckily, Tala by Kayla is here to make sure our necks and wrists don’t go barren with their Barbie-themed jewelry collection. Cop a necklace with charms on the Barbie B initials, a flower, or her iconic heel, or you can get iced out with the collection’s earrings and bracelets. They even have keychains because there is no such thing as being too extra for Barbie.

GET THAT ‘FIT

Have nothing to wear when you watch the Barbie movie? Then you may want to head on over to Forever 21 and cop a piece or two of their recently released Barbie collection. With the number of items they have on offer, you’ll feel like an actual mix-and-match Barbie who’s playing dress-up. And if you and your friends are going to hang out after the movie, you may want to get the Barbie UNO Cards and play a round or two (yes, it exists).

SKATE IN STYLE

One of the most memorable outfits from the film is Barbie and Ken skating in their neon looks on the beach. But those yellow and pink skates weren’t custom-made for the film. Those are actual skates you can buy, and they are called Barbie Inline Skates, which you can get from Impala Skate. Now all we need now are purple and pink ensembles to complete the look.

THE BARBIE ARCH

No Barbie look is complete without a pair of pink heels. After all, one of the most viral moments from the movie’s trailer is Barbie’s impeccable arch that stays on even after she takes off her heels. And if you want a pair of those, Aldo is here to satisfy the urge with their Barbie movie capsule collection. Those pink heels have us wanting to add-to-cart ASAP. But if a more sensible shoe is what you’re after, Superga has their Barbie collection which uses the 2750 silhouette, while Crocs‘s collection even comes with its own rivets that you can buy separately.

BARBIELAND IN REAL LIFE

You won’t need to travel far and wide to find Barbieland. It’s right here in Pasay. Aside from the Barbie box photo spots in malls around the country, SM Mall of Asia is home to the Barbie Land Experience. Located at the Atrium, the space has everything any Barbie fan would enjoy, from a two-story Barbie’s Dream House, the doll’s vanity room to a pool, closet, and much more. While you’re jamming out to the Barbie movie’s OST, you can also check out some toys and merch and grab a bite or two of the Krispy Kreme Barbie donuts. The space will only be up until July 21 though, so better visit soon.

This Young Creative Brought To Life The Sets For Barbie Forteza’s NYLON Manila Cover Shoot

line
She turned mufflers into the Iron Throne.

Katrish Aristoki will always deliver when it comes to her designs. And her work for Barbie Forteza’s NYLON Manila cover was no exception.

Related: Better Believe It: How To Map Out Your Future, According To Barbie Forteza

When it came to Barbie Forteza’s NYLON Manila cover, there were a lot of moving parts that brought it to life. And one of the key elements was the production design. From the layout of Barbie with the mannequins in the pink wigs to her burning rubber on the motorcycle with the motor parts adorning the background, the sets helped tell the story we envisioned for this cover.

And bringing all this to life for our July cover was Katrish Aristoki, a young production designer who understood the assignment. With our creative vision and Katrish and her team’s expertise, Barbie’s cover shoot was built from the ground up as the actress embodied a whole new side of herself. And that’s on the power of young creatives.

TURNING SPACE INTO A FANTASY

Katrish’s journey to becoming a professional production designer began, fittingly enough, with a college org. “I joined a theater organization called Artistang Artlets. Back then, we were making stage design for theater plays.” Following graduation, her “break” came when she got a position at Itch Creatives, an advertising agency in Pasig. “I was still a graphic designer back then, but the CEO and my art director gave me the opportunity to design the set for an ad we are doing for Careline.” The project was a success, and Katrish’s bosses decided to let her continue her set design work. The rest, as they say, is history.

Admittedly, production design can get stressful . There are a lot of moving pieces and fields involved in PD that go beyond just set-making. For Katrish though, this is the part of production design that speaks to her the most. “I love how [production design] pushes me to have multiple skills in different fields. As a production designer, I sometimes become an interior designer, an architect, an engineer, a florist, a painter, and many other roles because projects are very diverse and require you to study different fields.”

BUILDING THE DREAMHOUSE

Katrish’s portfolio is filled with barren sets that were turned into magic, so it was a no-brainer for us to get her for this project. And with the help of the shoot’s creative director, Kenneth Dimaano, Katrish brought this new look for Barbie to life. “When solidifying the set design, there was no other name in mind than Katrish Aristoki,” says Kenneth. “As a young commercial set designer, she was incredibly enthusiastic about creating an iconic cover with us.” As for Katrish, her thinking went like this, “In terms of installation and accumulating the set pieces, for the cover I had this concert of Lady Gaga in mind where there were a lot of mufflers around her. The installation was inspired by Game of Thrones’ Iron Throne, mimicking Barbie as a queen but in stylized form.”

From the pink wigs to the mufflers and the actual motorcycle, it was a bit of a scavenger hunt for Katrish and her team to source all the needed props and materials. But that is part of what goes behind the job as a bit of crafty resourcefulness is needed. This part of the production was, in fact, her favorite part of the whole shoot.

“It was hard looking for [mufflers] because normally shops keep these things as they could still be used on repairing other motorcycles. My assistants Mike Tan and Sunday Carreon helped me get all the parts. The funny thing is when we were cruising through the Muffler and Junk shops in Boni Avenue in Mandaluyong, people got weirded out on the things we were looking for.”

Adds Katrish, “I think that’s how production design becomes so interesting. It puts you in different processes where you are in situations in which you have to be as resourceful as possible.” It was all worth it in the end as the final output resulted in sets that resembled art installations. Stepping between the layouts felt like you were walking through a museum.

Overall, getting to work up close with Barbie Forteza was a memorable experience for Katrish, especially with how the set design was able to help the actress bring out a new character. “I’ve always seen Barbie in television shows and have regarded her roles on her prowess as an actress. Working with her in this photo shoot is kinda seeing Barbie not in a new light but in her ability to prove that prowess.”

TAKE THE LEAP

Even though she’s still in her 20s, Katrish has already worked with her fair share of big stars and major brands. Barbie Forteza is yet another name she can add to her already glowing resume. Though she admits that getting to work on these major projects brings her nerves, it’s the experience and working with other creatives that matters to her. “I think when you’re doing something bigger than yourself, the fear is always there. But more than the fear, I am always excited about what the outcome would be like. I like these ideas in my head seeing it in person.”

As for her advice to other young people who would like to begin their journey in the creative industry, the young creative shares that it all begins with that single step. “I hope fear and doubts won’t stop you from being curious and staying inquisitive. I took that leap of faith in experimenting and challenging how our society expects us things to be. You are already a work of art. Please proceed to get that sunshine.”

5 Hard Truths Blythe Unapologetically Dropped

line
Girls like Andrea don't cry.

Zero lies detected from Blythe.

Related: 6 Times Andrea Brillantes Spoke Up And Didn’t Stutter

You can always count on Andrea Brillantes to speak her mind when she has to. With years of experience in the public spotlight, the Gen Z superstar has made it known that she isn’t afraid to defend herself or speak truths that some people aren’t ready to hear. Such is the life of a young baddie who we’ve seen grow and mature and knows what she wants in life.

That unapologetic and confident attitude was on full display during Vice Ganda’s recent vlog where she had a café date with her Gen Z beshie. And in those 20 minutes, it wasn’t just the coffee and tea that was piping hot. Blythe was armed with bars that day. Here are some truths we can all take away from Andrea Brillantes.

THERE’S POWER IN TRAVELLING ALONE

Blythe Andrea Brillantes

Often, we associate traveling, especially overseas, with being with friends, family, or a significant other. But there’s no shame in booking that flight for one. As Blythe shared with Vice, her recent one-week trip to Spain was her opportunity to travel alone for the very first time. Her solo travel was her gift to herself as she found the space for some reflection and soul searching. Traveling alone can still be fun, and even bring out a more mature and enriched version of yourself. So, take it from Andrea, and don’t be afraid to get those solo travel miles.

LET YOURSELF FEEL YOUR FEELS

Blythe Andrea Brillantes

Breakups are never easy. Spending so much time with your partner to becoming relative strangers overnight is a kind of emotional baggage that not everyone can let go of in a snap. It’s ok to let yourself feel your feels. For Blythe, while she normally takes 3-5 business days to get over a breakup, it took her over a month to heal from her recent split. Letting all that emotion bubble inside you is an unhealthy way to cope with a breakup. So, let it out, shed a tear or two, or do something productive to process your emotions.

THERE’S NO NEED TO TAKE EVERYTHING

Blythe Andrea Brillantes

When it comes to the politics of a breakup, one of the things that need to be navigated is who returns what to their former partner. But sometimes, if there’s no need to, you don’t have to demand your ex to give everything you gave them back. As Andrea admitted in the vlog, she’s keen on keeping most of the stuff she got from her ex. And, as she added, “Kasi alam nyo Meme, kapag kinuha ko kasi lahat ng binigay ko sa kanya, wala na syang gamit sa condo nyiya’.” We love a kind queen.

KNOW WHEN AND HOW TO FIGHT FOR LOVE

Blythe Andrea Brillantes

As much as we don’t like it, fights eventually do happen in a relationship. There will be disagreements, and that is a normal thing to happen. But how you get through those humps is what makes or breaks a relationship. For Blythe, she doesn’t let her anger get the best of her and instead notes down her emotions on her phone and then lets her boyfriend read it when they have time together. That way, they can process her emotions more healthily.

But don’t get it twisted, Andrea isn’t afraid to confront a third party when she has proof, something she has done before. Still, the actress and beauty mogul also made it a point that, at the end of the day, it’s the cheating partner who deserves the blame.

THERE’S MORE TO LIFE THAN ONE PERSON

Blythe Andrea Brillantes

Breakups can sometimes make us feel like the carpet was pulled underneath us, and we’re spiraling into a void. But you should understand that not everything should revolve around one person. Letting go is understandably hard, but there’s more to life than a person who didn’t take your relationship seriously. At the end of the day, your self-worth and respect are more important as you should treat yourself the way you want others to treat you. And if you’re having a hard time moving on, Andrea shared that one tip is to think about their turn-offs and flaws. “Talaga ba? Iiyakan ko yung lalaki na hindi nagpapa laundry nang isang taon?”

Thank You Lola Amour For Giving Us The Bop Of The Season

line
It's been raining in Manila, hindi ka ba nilalamig?

Going number one on Spotify? Getting noticed by ENHYPEN’s Jungwon and Jake? Lola Amour’s Raining In Manila did that!

Related: Just Like You, ENHYPEN Also Listens To OPM As Seen On Their Spotify Playlist

There are hundreds, if not thousands of new songs released every day that vie for listeners’ attention. Naturally, it can get crowded out there. But there are some songs that not only become hits but break through the noise to fit the moment like they were made for the season. And as if they could see into the future, Lola Amour decided to drop their latest single, Raining In Manila, fittingly enough, at the start of the rainy season last June. Not only did the OPM band give us yet another bop, but they also delivered a song that captured the zeitgeist.

RAINING IN THE STREAMS

Raining In Manila is a nearly five-minute roller coaster ride that relates to the moody sentiments of the season. The production, instruments, lyrics, and message are just *chef’s kiss* and make for a number that hits in all the right places. The song is both scenario specific and relatable at the same time, which is no wonder that K-pop AU (alternate universe) writers saw their latest edition to their OST. Following its release, the Taglish song became a favorite in AU stories, which got the track attention from a wider audience. Soon, Raining In Manila started climbing up the charts, specifically on Spotify as more people gravitated towards the moody banger.

Lola Amour is no stranger to viral hits. After all, you probably have heard of Fallen on your TikTok FYP once or multiple times last year. But so far, Raining In Manila is becoming the hit of the season with hundreds of thousands of streams a day. The track even topped the Spotify Philippines Top 50 chart, becoming the most streamed song in the country.

Not only was this a first for the band, but it was also a rare feat to do so for an OPM song given competition from global superstars. Also, the most-streamed OPM song in the country right now holds the record for the biggest single day streams for any OPM song on Spotify Philippines history. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough for Lola Amour, the band overthrew Ben&Ben and Zack Tabudlo to become the top OPM band and artist in general on Spotify. Record-breakers fr.

ENHYPEN SAID STAN LOLA AMOUR

Raining In Manila has even found itself on other shores, particularly in South Korea thanks to ENHYPEN. ICYDK, the group’s members listen to OPM, you may know about Jay’s love for rapper Young Cocoa. So, it wasn’t that much of a surprise to know that a couple of members have been bopping to Lola Amour. During one of Jake’s lives, fans started asking him to listen to Raining In Manila, which he actually did. And even though he didn’t understand the Filipino lyrics, he still enjoyed the track. Soon enough, Jungwon came onboard the train and shared on Weverse to an ENGENE that he also listened to Raining In Manila. All we can say is taste!

With fans asking for English and Korean translations of the song, Lola Amour is getting that international promo, as they should. Considering that the band has been active for over seven years now, Lola Amour is getting that deserved career breakthrough. And even if the sun is shining and the sky is blue, Raining In Manila is still going to hit because it’s a universal bop.

Better Believe It: How To Map Out Your Future, According To Barbie Forteza

line
Barbie’s Dreams.

It takes conviction, tenacity, and unshakable faith to go after wild dreams. And Barbie Forteza, from the very beginning, knew it. From her long commutes to auditions to finally building her dream house, Barbie walks us through the last 14 years of proving that greatness was always in the cards for her — not because it was her birthright, but because she decided she would get there.

Most of us abandon our childhood dreams once they stop sparkling with promise and leave the realm of practicality. Not all kids who dream of becoming a doctor actually finish medical school. It’s even rarer to meet someone who, as a child, dreamt of stardom and spent the rest of her life following through. One of those few is Barbie Forteza.

Make no mistake — what Barbie has accomplished is no happy accident. While most showbiz journeys start at being discovered, or in recent years, going viral, the Kapuso Primetime Princess’s origin story goes like this: A shy child laid her eyes on a television screen and decided she wanted to be in it.

Full of conviction, this young Barbie committed to the task. She explains, “This is  my dream talaga eh. Ito talaga yung gusto kong gawin. Iniisip ko, kung hindi ako artista, ano ako?”

SHE COULD, SO SHE DID

I walked into the studio a little past 7 AM and saw Barbie already in her makeup chair, eager to get started. In the corner was her father, eating breakfast after their early drive. This has been the family’s set-up through the years – a once-in-a-lifetime kind of support that Barbie admits is the secret sauce to her magnetic confidence and fierce determination.

It took a village to raise this star, and this star has never forgotten.

When asked about her humble beginnings, Barbie recalled her first audition. “Yung mga kasama ko sa VTR, nakikita ko na sa mga commercial, so medyo kinabahan si ate girl. So nung [ako] na, kinabahan [ako] at hindi ko nagawa. So syempre ‘di ako natanggap.”

As young as she was, this moment revealed to be the wakeup call she needed.

With wistful nostalgia, Barbie recounted what her mother told her. “Pag-isipan mong mabuti kung ito talaga yung gusto mo ha. Kasi kung mag-iipon tayo, tapos pagdating doon mahihiya ka, hindi tayo matatanggap, sayang yung pagod, sayang yung gastos.’”

Like for many Filipinos, money did not come easy. However, Barbie’s family was determined to give their young girl a fighting chance. Her mom then continued to say, “Pero sabihin mo sa amin kung ito talaga yung gusto mo. Pagtatrabahunan namin ng daddy mo para makaipon tayo ng pamasahe.”

“I remember feeling scared because I’ve made a lot of big decisions at the worst time possible which was during the pandemic,” Barbie explained in an Instagram post. “Everything felt unsure and I guess one of the reasons why I did this shoot was to be aesthetically active on social media for job opportunities, hopefully.”

A year after that, she booked her favorite role to date, and the rest, as they say, is history.

This was Barbie’s motivation then, and it is her motivation now.

“Mas naging confident ako to chase my dreams kasi wala akong kailangan patunayan sa kanila,” Barbie explained about her parents. “‘Di nila kailangan ng explanation kung bakit gusto kong maging artista.”

FINDING HER POWER

Over the next decade and a half, Barbie grew up in the public eye, appearing in a slew of Filipino teleseryes like Kara Mia and Tween Hearts. In 2022, she made her indelible mark on television as she took on the leading role in GMA’s Maria Clara at Ibarra, and brought the show’s fiery, spirited protagonist to life.

“Hindi ko akalain na magiging ganoon din kalaki yung impact niya sa’kin, sa buhay ko,” Barbie said when asked about her portrayal of Klay, the Gen Z nursing student who was whisked into the antiquated world of Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere.

Just like Klay, Barbie found herself defying norms in a world that has stayed the same for a long time.

Before catching this upward momentum, though, Barbie also had her fair share of plateaus. One of which came during the pandemic, when opportunities were scarce and competition was abundant. It was then that Barbie decided to produce her own photo shoot, investing in herself once again, as she has done many times before.

“Sobra talagang pasasalamat ko sa GMA Network dahil nung time na yun, naniwala pa rin sila sa akin,” Barbie recalls. An extension of her innate drive is a well of gratitude towards her network, her management, and her support system. “Even before I got to portray Klay, hindi nawala tiwala nila sa akin. Inalagaan pa rin nila ako, nirenew pa rin nila ang kontrata ko, knowing na ang dami namang bagong artist, diba? Pero hindi nila ako nakalimutan.”

Barbie’s real superpowers, as I witnessed on set, did not end with determination and grit. It included her own brand of unapologetic confidence, playful self-awareness, and unmistakable humility.

A NEW ERA

With her dream house in the works, and an impressive lineup of projects awaiting her, Barbie shared her excitement over the evolution of Philippine showbiz, and in particular, the gradual and optimistic dissolution of network barriers.

“We are open to more partnerships and collaborations. Ang saya isipin na parang magiging isang malaking pamilya na tayo at liliit at liliit na ang mundo nating lahat. Andami kong gustong makatrabaho na dati parang hindi posibleng mangyari.”

And clearly the stars are aligning, as Barbie, who is managed by the Sparkle GMA Artist Center, recently made an appearance at It’s Showtime. She screamed a reverberating “What’s up, Madlang People?” across the studio and her energy was lauded across the nation.

The possibilities are truly endless for someone who dreams out loud.

DEAR YOUNG BARBIE

If the same young Barbie who failed at her first audition could see you now, how would she react?

When asked this question, Barbie erupted in contagious laughter. “Sobrang iba talaga ng Barbie ngayon sa Barbie dati.” From a quiet student who never participated in school functions, she’s transformed into a woman who can pose on a big bike and stay in character while a dozen people took her photos and added wind to her hair.

“I feel like I made young Barbie very proud.”

As for her message to that younger self? Three words that, through unconditional love and support, she’s embodied her whole life:

I got you.

Choreographies You Probably Didn’t Know Were Made By SB19’s Stell

line
Singer, dancer, comedian, and choreographer.

In case you didn’t know, Stell Ajero has had a hand in choreographing most of SB19’s dances.

It’s no secret that one of the key pillars to the success of SB19 is the talent that each member brings to the table. In Stell’s case, he’s a multi-hyphenate who not only has the looks and one of the best voices in OPM, but also a talented dancer who has used his skills to form some of SB19’s most iconic dances, and often with the help of the other members. SB19 is very hands on when it comes to their artistry, such as with Pablo writing the lyrics and Justin contributing to the creative direction, and that also applies for Stell who is credited as the choreographer behind some of their dances.

ICYDK, before he became a P-pop idol, Stell used to be in a dance team with Josh and was at one point a choreographer to children. So, he’s a pro on the mic and the dance floor. Needless to say, if you Google talent, you’ll probably find a picture of Stell. Scroll down for some of SB19’s songs that were brought to life by Stell’s choreography.

WIN YOUR HEART

When SB19 was given the honor of remaking Binibining Pilipinas’ classic theme song for today, the group could have just given us the new version of the song and called it a day. But this is SB19 we’re talking about, so they went above and beyond by also making their own choreography to the track, courtesy of Stell. And, during the Binibining Pilipinas 2022 Grand Coronation, it was Stell who taught the contestants the moves before they did their performance. Considering that Stell used to be a professional dance teacher, this probably was just second-nature to him.

WHAT?

One of their biggest and most ambitious music videos to date, SB19’s What? is a five-minute tour de force that showed the members in their own different worlds, and showed how you can turn things around for yourself with hard work, while being proud of your roots. And helping bring to life the inspiring narrative is Stell’s hard-hitting choreography that takes no prisoners and embodies the passion passion, grit, and glory of the song. That dance break? Stell did that!

WYAT

Choreography isn’t just meant to make a group look good, but it should also convey the meaning of the song. And that is something Stell did in spades when he made the choreo for WYAT. The time-travelling disco bop sees the boys go to different decades as they lay down the message of the importance of living in the here and now. And you get to see this dynamic energy during the chorus as the group express how the heart and soul become one through their hand choreography. The symbolism on display here is what takes the track to new heights.

SLMT

Sure, SB19 can go hard on the dance floor when they have to. But their music can also touch on the fun side of life. Such is the case with SLMT, their wholesome bop that serves as their musical thanks to all their supporters. And Stell’s imbues the song with lighthearted and playful choreography that matches its energy. The guys wanted to have fun here and Stell’s moves do just that.

GO UP

The queen herself. The rent was due and the eviction notice was on their door. SB19 needed to come up with something real quick and they did just that. And one of the main reasons why Go Up did so well was its viral choreography, which was made Stell with the help of the members. The symbolism, synchronization, and formations on display here is insane as the group visualized their determination to make it big.

It's full speed ahead for Barbie Forteza.

Better believe it, Barbie Forteza graces our next print fanzine with a special cover on her special month.

July is a big month for us. We’re set to launch our very first print fanzine of our new era, one where we aren’t afraid to go bigger, bolder, and braver, as we showcase the other side of some of your favorite stars. It’s a time for change, which is why we cycled through quite a few options when it came to having that cover star who would begin this new era with a bang. And, at the end of the day, we went with a name that you all probably know and also embodied what it means to be a multi-hyphenate. So, prepare to meet a whole new side of Barbie Forteza as our next fanzine cover star.

IT’S BARBIE’S WORLD

For over 14 years, Barbie has been entertaining crowds both on the big and small screen. In just her mid-20s, Barbie has achieved the kind of career most actors work a lifetime to achieve. And clearly, she’s staying booked and busy as the Primetime Princess. But while most know Barbie for her calm, sweet, and confident personality, we wanted to capture a different kind of Barbie.

In the same way that the actress can embody different roles, we wanted to showcase the star in a different light, one that you will not be expecting and also highlights how she’s ready to take on her new goals and challenges. In short, it’s the Gen Z edge you didn’t know you needed to see Barbie in.

At the same time, the July fanzine will also delve into Barbie’s story and dig into how she became the star she was destined to be. After all, before she became a leading lady, she was just a young girl in Laguna auditioning for commercials. Oh, and considering that July is Barbie’s as well as the release of the Barbie movie, it just felt correct to have Barbie on our July cover.

Stay tuned to NYLON Manila’s social media accounts on July 15 for the official reveal of Barbie Forteza’s NYLON Manila fanzine. Trust us, you don’t want to miss it.
