Today, YouTube is the top place if you want to watch videos online and is home to some of the biggest content creators today. This also rings true for a handful of Filipino YouTubers who have built a global fanbase. These content creators are seen as the top when it comes to the YouTube scene in the country. Here are 8 of the top Filipino YouTubers that you need to be following.

ALEX GONZAGA

You could say Alex Gonzaga is a pioneer when it comes to celebrities starting their own YouTube channel, and not just for the sake of having one either. She established her channel back in 2017 and in around four years has made a name for herself as one of the premier YouTubers in the Philippines. Alex mainly posts vlogs about her life or does skits and parodies of trending topics. With over 11.3 million subscribers and counting, she’s the most followed Filipino celebrity on YouTube. Her success is all the more impressive considering that when she started, she felt people would only watch her videos if her sister would be in them.

CHOOX TV

With over 5.89 million subscribers on YouTube, ChoOxTV, whose real name is Edgar Dumali, is the most followed Filipino gamer on the video-sharing platform. His claim to fame is his streaming of Mobile Legends where he initially spoke through a voice changer before he eventually revealed his real voice. The South Cotobato native may have started into game streaming at a relatively late age, but that hasn’t stopped him from being one of the most popular game streamers in the country. Thanks to his success, Edgar was also able to make a better life for himself and his family and even built his dream mansion thanks to his success from Mobile Legends.

CONG TV

Talk about OG. Lincoln Velasquez, or more popularly known as Cong TV, has been on YouTube for more than 12 years now as he uploaded his first video in 2008. Ever since then, he has built his brand through his comedy videos, game streams, and the general fun he gets into with his friends to over 8.65 million subscribers. He also regularly features his girlfriend, Viy Cortez (who has a popular YouTube channel, too), as well as members of the Team Payaman, a group of rising content creators where Cong TV serves as the leader.

DONNALYN BARTOLOME

Donnalyn Bartolome started posting on YouTube when she was 14 years old originally just for her friends. But soon, she started to gain a following on the site and afterward became a staple on the local YouTube scene. Donnalyn’s content ranges from a wide variety of topics from beauty tutorials to vlogs about her life, pranks, and everything in between. She also uses her YouTube channel to promote her singing career and currently stands as the most subscribed Filipino singer-songwriter on YouTube with over 7.86 million subscribers.

IVANA ALAWI

Ivana Alawi had a lot of false starts in her career. After initially dreaming about becoming a housemaid, she shifted her focus into becoming a celebrity. But no matter where she went, whether it be for commercial audiences of PBB, she was always rejected. But when she started her YouTube channel was when she hit the stratosphere. The video that set her on a path to stardom was a video she posted about her life at home. Special in its simplicity, with her just acting normally, the video quickly went viral and has racked up 28 million views as of this writing. Ever since then, she has grown to be one of the top Filipino YouTubers with over 13.7 million subscribers. Her success just goes to show that just being the natural you will get you places.

NIANA GUERRERO

At only 15 years old, Niana Guerrero is the youngest person on this list, which is quite impressive. Niana has been killing the game since she was 10 years old and is the undeniable social media star of the Philippines with one of the highest followings of any Filipino across on social media. This holds true on YouTube as she currently has 13.8 million subscribers, making her the third most subscribed Filipino YouTuber on the site. Niana is most known for either doing or starting dance covers and challenges. And she also posts videos of her and her family doing challenges.

RANZ KYLE

While some people might know Ranz Kyle as Niana Guerrero’s older brother, Ranz has more than earned the right to be followed based on his talents alone. He is also an equally talented dancer and frequently posts dance covers, challenges, and pranks, among other things, on his YouTube channel. In fact, with over 14.4 million subscribers, he is the second most followed Filipino YouTuber on the video-sharing site, and he’s only 24 years old.

ZEINAB HARAKE

Even though Zeinab Harake posted her first video on YouTube just in July 2019, she already is one of the top Filipino YouTubers. In one month, she surpassed one million subscribers and by her first anniversary, she had over 6.2 million. Today, the 22-year-old currently has 10.9 million subscribers, one of the few local YouTubers to have their subscriber account surpass eight digits. Aside from posting vlogs about her life, she has also collaborated with other YouTubers like her best friends Donnalyn Bartolome and Jelai Andres (affectionately called DOLAINAB) as well as Alex Gonzaga. Her fans even have their own fandom name called Zebbies.

WE CANNOT GET OVER HOW CRAZY COOL THESE WILD MAKEUP TRANSFORMATIONS ON TIKTOK ARE

We Cannot Get Over How Crazy Cool These Wild Makeup Transformations On TikTok Are

line
Fantasies come true.

Purists and conservatives can say all what they want, but with over a billion views on TikTok, these out-of-this-world makeup transformations are here to stay. (Well, for the most part, because you can always wash off makeup after.)

At this point makeup transformations are a dime a dozen on social media, especially on TikTok. Some would even go as far as saying that as creative and expressive as it is, it has tipped to a point of saturation. While that is valid, it should be of little to concern, especially if you not only fascinated with cosmetics, but also a firm believer in its transformative and often therapeutic ways. These are primarily the reasons why audiences are not only charmed, but completely captivated by how one face can become something different in just a few deceptively simple transitions.

On TikTok alone, makeup transformations account for approximately 4.5 billion views. Yes, you read that right. Let let this be a warning though, because after one curious tap, you will be scrolling endlessly for hours on end with all the fantastic and wild looks that people are capable of. Make not mistake about it, some, if not most of these clever beats are a product of time and resourcefulness. Traditional makeup aside, never underestimate what the combination of paint, paper, glitter, and a lot of imagination can do. No, we’re not talking about a school art project here—although it is nothing short of artistic.

A Work Of Art

Visceral and vivid in its form, the content creators that pursue makeup transformations on TikTok among other social media platforms are truly inspiring. Building on the foundation of beauty and redefining it to what moves them, the works that they put out are mesmerizing, mind-blowing, and a movement in itself. Here, beauty is expanded, boundaries are pushed, and stereotypes smashed all with strokes of color, dimensions of material, and a whole lot of passion.

It may look intimidating on the onset, especially since these expressions tend to skew the fantastic in all its forms, but once you get into it, you will either want to pick up a few tips and tricks, and for some brave ones, maybe even try out a makeup transformation for themselves on TikTok. All it takes is that dash of courage and heaps of color, contour, and creativity. The underlying message for a lot of the videos you see on your For You Page is simple: do what makes you feel good and beautiful, even if it means something else completely. You do you, they say, but this time, it’s not only you who will be inspired, but those millions and billions scrolling through these truly thumb-stopping works of art.

Want to see more of these wild and out-of-this-world makeup transformations on TikTok? Look no further, we rounded them up for you. Let the creativity commence!

5 Beauty Looks You Can Copy From Francine Diaz, The Queen of No Makeup Makeup

line
Queen of freshness!

Make way for Francine Diaz, the bare-faced queen!

A young actress, leading lady in the making, and inspiration for fresh and oh, you know, natural makeup looks, Francine Diaz is definitely on the rise. Aside from winning the hearts of her fans, the Kadenang Ginto protagonist also proves that less is more. The golden girl isn’t afraid to go bare or go bold at times, and we stan her range. From her pink flushed look to wearing smokey eye makeup, here are five of Francine Diaz’s beauty moments that needs to be appreciated more.

READ MORE: Get Ready To See Francine Diaz As You’ve Never Seen Her Before in Tenement 66

1. A LITTLE CHEEKY

Francine Diaz likes to keep it subtle. This fresh, almost bare-faced look could probably be her signature and you can make it yours, too. You just need a dab of blush on the cheeks, (it has to look as if you just pinched it) at least two to three coats of mascara, winged eyeliner that extends just up to the corner of the eye, and clear gloss.

2. SOFT SMOKEY EYE

Proving that she can also be a tough one, Francine wears a soft smokey eye makeup look brought to life by RB Chanco and an asymmetrical hairstyle matched with accessories. You can achieve this by applying shades of brown ranging from light to dark, pencil eyeliner (to define your lower lash line as well), highlighter on the cheeks, brow pomade, and a matte lippie.

3. SUMMERTIME MAGIC

This summertime glow is brought to you by the one and only Francine Diaz and visualized by makeup artist Robbie Piñera. Cop the golden girl’s look by defining your brows, applying three to four coats of mascara on your upper and lower lash line to achieve her doll eyes, warm eyeshadow tones, and lip gloss. Don’t forget her signature blush-on and highlighter!

4. POPSTAR HALF UPDO

Perfecting her beat even more, Francine matches her smokey eye with a half updo by hairstylist Angel Jamelarin that helps in achieving the fox eye trend, as popularized by supermodel Bella Hadid. Instant eye lift it is!

5. A REAL-LIFE NYMPH

Is it safe to say that Francine Diaz is the queen of au naturel? This pink flushed look by Robbie Piñera and waves by hairstylist Mark Familiara gives us all the freshness we need to make it through the week. All hail, bushy brows!

HANNAH BALANAY

Hannah Balanay Turned Her Love Of Dancing Into A 18 Million Strong Following On TikTok

line
You may know her best from her Don't Start Now dance challenge.

The 20-year-old Filipina TikTok star talked to NYLON Manila about her success, the Filipino TikTok stars she looks up to, and how K-Pop and BTS inspired her to dance.

Related: Dancing Through Life—And Then Some—There Is More To Yanyan De Jesus Than A Few Seconds Of Your Time

Out of all the social media apps currently available, TikTok truly stands out for how much potential it offers for users. It has a low barrier of entry so a lot of people can post their own videos. The app also has many tools available to make more creative and eye-catching videos. TikTok is a place where you can go from being a nobody to a social media star, and it doesn’t matter what field you are in. Whether it’s dancing, acting, comedy, fashion, cooking, and so much more, you can become a social media star practically overnight.

Case in point: Hannah Balanay, a 20-year-old Filipina living in Australia who mainly posts dance covers on TikTok. What started out as a hobby and her just participating in dance trends made her one of the app’s top creators. But Hannah Balanay isn’t exactly a household name, especially when compared to other Filipino TikTok stars. Though her success alone is proof that she is also worthy of praise and attention as she has garnered over 17 million followers and 365 million likes (and counting).

NYLON Manila chatted with the 20-year-old social media star to get to know more about her story, her success, and the young Filipina behind the viral success.

HOW HANNAH BALANAY GOT INTO DANCING

Hannah Balanay, who more popularly goes by the username thexhan on social media, was born in the Philippines on March 12, 2001. At a young age, she, her siblings, and her family moved to Australia because of her dad’s work and to pursue better opportunities for the family. They settled on Christmas Island, a small Australian territory off the coast of Indonesia. Hannah describes herself as an introvert, but someone who is also friendly and honest. For someone who describes themselves as an introvert, Hannah really knows how to attract people’s attention with her dancing, which is something she says she’s been into ever since she was young. “I’ve always been into dancing since I was little, so it’s been a part of my life for years! I guess the love for dancing came naturally.”

Watching her dance videos, you will notice that Hannah Balanay has a chill, slightly laid-back, but confident aura about her. When she dances, it doesn’t look like she is trying to get the views, but genuinely enjoys what she is doing. “I love that when I dance, I get to express myself and have fun at the same time.” She adds how the feeling gets better knowing that she gets to share what she loves with her fans and audience.

@thexhan

( dc @gooseyj23 ) THANK YOU SO MUCHHH FOR 14M!!! I LOVE YOU AND I APPRECIATE YOU ALL ??

♬ BILLIE JEAN X BOO X F IT UP VMESHBEATS MASHUP – Varoon Ramesh

There was a time though when Hannah’s passion and fire for dancing nearly dimmed when she used to live on Christmas Island. “When I lived on Christmas Island, I had no one to dance with, so I just stopped dancing for a while,” she explains. So, how then did Hannah find that spark again to dance? Through K-Pop and stanning BTS, of course. She shared that once she started getting into the genre and the group, she started dancing again and would “learn as many dances as I could and record them.”

BEGINNINGS ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND VIRAL SUCCESS

Since Hannah loves dancing, it was only natural for her to post dance videos and covers online. “By posting dance videos, people can also take inspiration from my choreography. It’s always amazing seeing other people recreate my dances.” The first time Hannah ever posted one of her dance covers online was on Musical.ly, the predecessor to TikTok. “Back then I would also join in on some of the dance trends on the app.” Hannah started to regularly create content on Musical.ly and when it was converted to TikTok, Hannah transitioned to the new app. And once she transitioned to TikTok, Hannah’s career truly took off.

Hannah Balanay started gaining traction on TikTok in late 2019. “At the time I was posting a lot of dance trend videos whilst wearing bucket hats and that became what I was recognized for on the app,” she recalls. “I think a lot of my supporters like following me not only for my dancing but also for my fashion and style.”

If you don’t follow Hannah, then you most likely have seen some of her dance covers on your For You page, with her videos regularly getting one million views. She is most known on the app for wearing her signature bucket hat and usually with a sweater, hoodie, or something comfortable. Some of her biggest videos on TikTok have reached more than 40 million views and more than five million likes. She even has a video where she teaches how to do a body wave that has over 26.5 million views and 4.4 million likes.

Her biggest hit though on the app was her dance cover of Dua Lipa’s Don’t Start Now that she posted in January 2020. Her dance moves went viral on the app with stars like Charli d’Amelio and Addison Rae doing her dance challenge. Hannah Balanay’s Don’t Start Now dance challenge became one of TikTok’s most popular dance challenges of 2020 to the point where it even has its own emote in Fortnite. The original video currently has over 53.8 million views and 6.6 million likes. Even outside TikTok, she has been recognized for her talent as she was featured in BTS’s IDOL ft. Nicki Minaj music video.

♬ Don’t Start Now – Dua Lipa

All of this has made her one of the most followed Filipino creators on TikTok. At 17 million followers and counting, she’s only behind the likes of Niana Guerrero and Bella Poarch. She also is the most followed on TikTok in Australia, too.

HOW HANNAH BALANAY HANDLES FAME AND DIVERSITY DANCE CREW

They say the bigger your career gets, so does your ego, but that isn’t true for Hannah Balanay. While she does acknowledge that she is a social media star, Hannah remains humble and grateful for all her success. “I feel so happy and blessed that I have the opportunity to share my content to such a large audience. I’m absolutely speechless from the love and support I get on the app!” She credits her ability to handle all her fame at a young age with the people who surround her. “I’m very lucky to be surrounded by friends and family that support me. I also take breaks when I need to take a rest.”

Outside of the social media app, Hannah also is part of a K-Pop dance cover group called Diversity. From Christmas Island, Hannah and her family moved to Perth where they are currently based. Moving to the city made her want to join a dance crew. “I joined Diversity when I moved from Christmas Island to Perth. Diversity is like a family, so once I joined, I felt very welcomed.” So, not only does Hannah kill it on TikTok, but she and her friends in Diversity also light up the dance floor with their K-Pop covers, most of which are filmed in public.

Aside from these activities, she also has her own YouTube channel and likes to play video games. She specifically sites playing Valorant with her friends as one of the ways in which she relaxes. She even streams herself playing video games on Twitch. And if you’re wondering, yes, she does follow and look up to quite a few of her fellow Filipino TikTokers. “There are loads! Some of my favorites are Niana Guerrero, AC Bonifacio, Bella Poarch, Yanyan De Jesus, and Sai Datinguinoo.”

ADVICE FOR ASPIRING CONTENT CREATORS

So, what’s next for Hannah Balanay? While social media is a fickle place and changes so quickly and unexpectedly, she does have a pretty clear idea of what she wants to do 10 years down the line. “I hope to continue creating content that people enjoy and entertain people with my dancing and maybe even singing, too!” As for advice for people who also want to make it big on social media, she says “Create content that you love, then people who enjoy the same things as you will naturally find you online. It’s important to make sure you have fun when making the content, too!”

Not one but 2 concepts. And a rumored Liza Soberano cameo, too!

From star boys to bad boys, P-Pop group BGYO has been cooking up a storm for their comeback.

If anything, we love a glorious comeback, don’t we? Tearing up their boy-next-door image that most of us have seen since their debut, BGYO unveils their darker side with their first comeback single, The Baddest. Ahead of its release on the 20th, a series of teasers posted across the P-Pop group’s social media platforms, BGYO has dropped not one, but two concept photos and videos.

IN CONTROL

The first concept with BGYO breaking into a control room filled with TV screens that flashed footages of the members, a voice can be heard towards the end of the teaser (rumored to be Liza Soberano) asking, “Hello boys. Ready?” Each of the members were dressed in techwear and utilitarian outfits, that almost resemble post-apocalyptic fashion as seen on films like Divergent and The Maze Runner. See BGYO’s outfits for The Baddest’s first concept below:

THE WORLD IS YOURS

BGYO definitely has a lot of tricks up in their sleeves when they released photos of their second concept. In a more moody and cinematic approach, the boys pose in a billiard room. We’re getting major Scar Face vibes ala Tony Montana from their oversized suits and the suave nature of spy film, Kingsman. Not to mention the choice of prints per member that embody their personalities. Can we please talk about their new hairstyles too? 2NE1 reunion comeback

What Is It Going To Take For Us To Have A 2NE1 Reunion?

line
Hello, 2NE1, reunion track when?

The year is 2021, the supposed year of 2NE1, and even after all this time, everyone is asking, is a reunion still possible?

Whether we like it or not, disbanding is very natural to the phenomenon that is K-pop. That’s life, you know? However, not all bands go through this, some even survive and come back in winning form. But as heartbreaking as it is, these things happen, which can be chalked to many different reasons such as the so-called seven year curse, the Korean fair trade, and even the noble going out on top. There are those that just fizzle out from their peak and fade into oblivion, but there are those that go through a public process of breaking up, which is partly done to help ease the fans with what is truly an end to an era. Many parting of ways have come and gone, but nothing echoes with a pang of pain than that of 2NE1, who to this day have been skirting around the possibility of a reunion.

Since the release of their tender and aching single, Goodbye, which stood to be a most fitting punctuation to their legendary career, CL, Dara, Minzy, and Park Bom have pretty much set off on their own, their solo endeavors taking to great heights, naturally. Now, this doesn’t mean they were out of each other’s lives, because as we have seen documented on social media, diligent entertainment sites, and dedicated fan efforts, the girls proved to be even greater friends post band life. This was also in no way an indication of an extinguishing of their fire as performers, because with renewed contracts for individual projects and seeking of new opportunities, they all were blazing their own trails. In fact, much to everyone’s delight, especially the Blackjacks, the girls of 2NE1 orchestrated a reunion at the 2015 Mnet Asia Music Awards (MAMA) that capped the mesmerizing set of CL.

“It’s been a long time coming, let’s go,” chanted CL, challenging what was already taunting the decibel levels in the stadium to go off. “We ‘bout to set the roof on fire baby.”

The Year 202NE1

In a moment now filed in history as iconic, the reunion of 2NE1 was characteristically high-intensity and hot, which proved to be a send-off the girls deserved. Following that, the crossing of paths of CL, Dara, Minzy, and Park Bom were far and in between, so much so that whenever some of them come together, it automatically sets, well, roofs on fire, baby.

With close contacts to each other (they actually still have their own group chat), they’ve all popped up on our timeline here and there, the most public and high profile of it was a reunion of 2NE1 in 2019 to celebrate their 10th anniversary as an awesome foursome. Toasting and eating cake to a decade since the release of their debut single, Fire, in 2009, they had fun and got emotional together with their fans who were part of the intimate gathering through their live stream. They even wrote and shared handwritten letters immortalizing the special coming together.

Parched for anything 2NE1 related since, fans have long wondered if a reunion performance would be possible given their own thriving solo careers. While CL, Dara, Minzy, and Park Bom have been tight-lipped about the possibility, they all have acknowledged how much they miss each other and would love to get together for the Blackjacks. In fact, it seems that Dara is at the center of this, vocally hopeful for a reunion, constantly bringing together the girls in different capacities and situations. Remember CL going to Palawan with her? How about that surprise duet of First Snow between Dara and Park Bom? And Masked Singer aside, didn’t we want more precious selfies with Dara and Minzy?

Let’s Go, Girls

Doing their loyal followers and supports one better than just parts of the band at a time, 2NE1 took the world by surprise when in January of this year, they blessed us with a peek into another of their private reunion, this time for Minzy’s birthday. “2NE1, long time no see,” the celebrant posted on Instagram, which obviously sent timelines into a tizzy.

Rumors were swirling, which is part and parcel of a coming together like this. But this time, there existed a palpable shift of energy with the girls of 2NE1 when it came to a reunion. Every little thing was taken into consideration, with people reading in between the lines, sometimes perhaps too much for their own good. Even an apparent standard Facebook profile photo change was seen as a sign, which unfortunately did not yield to any new information.

However, on April 10, 2021, in the appointed year of 2NE1, Park Bom teased listeners on KBS Cool FM’s Exciting Night, Park So Hyun that CL, Dara, Minzy, and herself took to the studio and recorded something. “On our 11th anniversary, we all met up,” she divulged. But before excitement took control, she quickly put things into perspective, saying, “Well, we just recorded something, so we don’t know if we are going to release it.”

Whatever it is, we will all just have to wait and see, but really, after all this time, what will it take to see 2NE1 in a reunion again, even for just one last time? It’s been a long time coming, girls, let’s go.

Now, while we wait for the resurfacing of this mysterious 2NE1 reunion track, let’s look back at some recent moments when Dara met up with her sisters from the band, virtually or otherwise.

8 Of Ken Suson’s Most Bad-ass ‘Fits That Prove He’s A Style Icon in the Making

line
Ken Suson's style truly is superior. A fashion icon in the making.

The main dancer of SB19 is unafraid with his bold style choices and we have a lot of evidence to back it up.

SB19 has been phenomenal as a group for the last couple of years since their debut, and they still are with every move they make. But individually, each of the boys can stand on their own, too, and that’s what makes their bond even stronger. Case in point, Ken Suson. Probably the most experimental among the boys when it comes to his style choices, the main dancer of SB19 blurs the lines of menswear and womenswear every chance that he can get. Leather corsets, acrylic nails, mesh tops—Ken’s tried it all.

And recently, he’s released his official clothing line, named Superior Son. During SB19’s NYLON Manila cover shoot, he told us that he’ll be dropping the collection soon enough while showing us sketches of his designs in between takes. While we wait for the rest of the collection, here are 8 of Ken Suson’s bad-ass outfits to keep you inspired.

1. CLASSIC LEATHER OUTFIT

Ken’s style DNA has always been there since the very beginning. Oversized leather jackets? Check. Silver hardware in outfits? Check.

2. FAN THE FLAMES

Ken Suson’s literally on fire in this all black outfit. How does he effortlessly pull off those leather pants?

3. PEARL PRINCE

If anyone can pull off pearls, ruffles, and a head scarf all together, that would be Ken in this 70s inspired outfit.

4. GOLDEN HOUR

We don’t know what we’re digging more—the duo-toned jacket or the metallic boots. Rockstar outfit, check!

5. SUPERSIZED OUTFIT

The reflective bucket hat, the oversized blazer, and the tiny purse were all on point.

6. FLOWER BOY

Ken Suson has always been vocal about his love for Japanese culture, hence this all leather outfit that looks straight out of a Tokyo postcard.

7. GANG GREEN GANG

The style upgrade we never knew we needed? Ken Suson in a graphic print mesh top (with cutouts!), a leather corset, and round sunglasses. A total bad-ass.

8. THE BOY WHO CRIED WOLF

Could this be Ken’s final form? The fit pretty much screams Final Boss.

When The Curtains Go Up On Broadway, You Will Be Seeing These Filipino Stars

When The Curtains Go Up On Broadway, You Will Be Seeing These Filipino Actors

line
To the stage! Break a leg, friends.

The show must go on. From a stalled turn to worthy introductions, meet the Filipino and Filipino-American actors making their Broadway debut soon.

Representation, for all its tepid progress, is still a necessary conversation, period. Sure, one will argue that considerable strides have been made in that regard, but bookended with all the injustice, racism, and inequality that continue to course through the systems of society, this is something that should not only be talked about it, but acted on now more than ever. Seen and felt across many industries, this is the most apparent in media and entertainment where to this day, the struggle to level with and have the same opportunities as the predominant bias, which let’s be real, is mostly still a white supremacy, persist. For every bannering of diversity or commitment to inclusion, there still remains a deep-seated prejudice, which bold and brave people are working to not only break, but eliminate altogether. On Broadway for example, roles for Asians are far and in between, much more Filipino actors.

Let’s be real, unless you’re really into the theater scene, which is arguably a robust fraction of pop culture in itself, your perception of Filipino representation on Broadway is limited to Lea Salonga. There is no discounting the trails blazed and opportunities carved out by the indefatigable living legend, because at a time when it was unheard of, she showed the West End and Broadway audiences, as well as of the rest of the world that the Filipinos are not only racially ambiguous ensembles, but stars who can headline and hero a show. Together with Lea Salonga on the groundbreaking stage of Miss Saigon, Isay Alvarez, Monique Wilson, Pinky Amador, Joanna Ampil and many other Filipino theater greats, they stormed the stages of the West End and Broadway with an underlying subtext to their roles that resonated far and wide: we are here.

The Matter Of Representation

Since then, many Filipino theater actors have taken to the West End and Broadway, their names rightfully decorated by marquee lights and met with thunderous applause after every performance.

In the enduring history of Miss Saigon alone, we’ve seen the likes of Rachelle Ann Go, Jon Jon Briones, and Eva Noblezada flourish to international acclaim. Singers like Aicelle Santos, Mark Bautista, and Gerald Santos have had successful and critically acclaimed turns on international tours and stages, and Red Concepcion in a particularly thriving turn in the star-making role as the Engineer on the US and UK tour of Miss Saigon. Many more have been raising the Philippine flag on these critical and commercial stages such as Christine Allado (Hamilton, Prince of Egypt), Marc dela Cruz (Hamilton), Nacho Tambunting (Felix Starro), and even Clint Ramos, Tony Award nominated costume and set designer (Slave Play, The Rose Tattoo) and Jessica Hagedorn (playwright, Felix Starro).

Not that it was ever argued, but clearly, when it comes to talent onstage, especially the Broadway and West End kind, Filipinos will always deliver, and then some. Trust us, there a lot more names and dreams to go around in the Great White Way, and the rest of the audience is starting to pay attention. Already a force to be reckoned with, more Filipino actors, both of pure and mixed decent, are stepping into the light as the curtains are set to finally rise on Broadway after the theater district went dark due to the onslaught of the pandemic.

Let it be known, that while the journey of representation and prominence is slow and steady, these names will be occupying their rightful places in the hall of legends as some of the many greats that have thoroughly entertained and affected. Sure, they may be telling someone else’s stories, but perhaps soon enough, we will be seeing these actors bring the house down in a Filipino original singing our songs, in our language, on the big, bright, and brilliant Broadway stage.

From a stalled turn to worthy introductions, meet the Filipino and Filipino-American actors making their Broadway debut soon.

Natalie Mendoza, Moulin Rouge

“May we present to you, the Sparkling Diamond. The unique, the indomitable…Satine,” and so writes the official Instagram page of Moulin Rouge the musical before introducing its new star, Natalie Mendoza who steps in the role originated by Karen Olivo. Born in Hong Kong to an English and German mother and Filipino and Spanish father, Mendoza holds the show close to heart as she was actually cast in the award-winning film starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman as China Doll. “This rare jewel of an opportunity to play a character like her on Broadway feels like a full circle moment,” says the proudly Filipino artist, actor, and teacher. “Love is the eternal healer, and there truly couldn’t be a better time to share in the frequency of love and joy that this musical specifically exudes and that ew and the world need to remember this unique moment in history.”

Andrea Macasaet, Six

Certainly no new name in theater, Filipino-Canadian actress Andrea Macasaet is set to make her official Broadway debut as Anne Boleyn in the delightfully delicious retelling of the lives of the wives of Henry VIII in Six. Realized as a pop concert, the laugh out loud funny cult favorite West End original has charmed both in the critical and commercial success, which officially made its way to the Great White Way on the day the lights went out due to the pandemic.

Far from being a stranger to the material, as she had already assumed the role of Anne Boleyn in various productions of Six, Andrea Macasaet had to wait for her time to shine on the dream stage. Keeping herself busy in the interim, she joined the ensemble of the TikTok production of Ratatouille The Musical, and now she is set to capture more hearts in what is bound to be her star-making turn, officially.

Vince Ermita, The Lion King

Ahead of the September opening of Broadway, it was announced that one of the theater district’s mainstays, The Lion King, is getting a bit of the Filipino flourish. One of the most successful productions in recent memory, there is a lot of eyes trained to the show, but young Filipino-American actor, Vince Ermita, just like Young Simba, cannot wait to be king. Already a dream of role of his, he actually wasn’t initially cast the first time he auditioned as he was deemed to young and small for the role, his mother said in an interview. But since the unraveling of the pandemic, the opportunity presented itself and even if he was already starring in a regional production of School of Rock, he took the chance again, and this time, he was crowned the prince of pride lands.

BONUS: Justin Viz and Dorothea Gloria, Romeo & Juliet

In the city of New York, Broadway isn’t the only place where theater exists, and many Filipinos know that, occupying spaces in professional productions and yes, Off Broadway.  Such is the surreal situation for Filipino actors, Justin Viz and Dorothea Gloria, who are starring opposite each other in the classic cautionary tale of love and sacrifice in iambic pentamer, Romeo & Juliet. In the State Island Shakespearean Theater Company’s undertaking of the star-crossed lovers, there is significant swell of Filipino pride, especially for the two leads. “I’m just grateful for the opportunity to bring life to such a wonderful character as Juliet. I also can’t help but feel a lot of Pinoy pride since theater professionals here in New York have chosen two Filipino talents. I cannot wait to show them what we have to offer,” says Dorothea Gloria to Rappler. Meanwhile, Justin Viz shares the sentiment, especially of Filipinos still struggling to break out of casting stereotypes, expressing, “The thought of two Filipinos landing the lead roles of Romeo and Juliet in a professional [New York City] production felt surreal because it’s rare, but here we are defying the odds and breaking barriers.” Talk about the light through yonder window breaks.

BONUS: Joaquin Valdes, Heathers: The Musical (West End)

Over at the West End, the part of the world that has seen many theater careers take off, especially for Filipinos, a fairly familiar name has made his debut on Heathers: The Musical. Talented and tenacious, as evidenced by his theater and film career in the Philippine, Joaquin Valdes has been hard at work in London, carving out a name for himself. From the UK and international touring productions of Miss Saigon and The King & I, as well as of his turn in hi first musical in the city, Fanny and Stella, the Filipino theater actor has been enjoying his biggest break as Ram Sweeney, the jock in the cult favorite film turned musical.

As evidenced by his journey on Westerberg High School, which he generously shares on Instagram, he is clearly having a lot of fun in what could very well open many more doors for him in the city. Ultimately thankful, he says, “At the state of the world is in, I am absolutely grateful for every single opportunity to do what I love, however it comes my way.”

After three months, K-Pop’s 4th gen It boy group, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, is back with new music through the drop of LO$ER=LO♡ER. Even though it hasn’t been that long since their last release, it doesn’t mean we haven’t been waiting for their new music. And once again, TOMORROW X TOGETHER has given us yet another emo-inspired bop.

In the same style as their past comeback single, 0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You), LOSER=LOVER is another pop-rock-punk-inspired song that sees the boys let out all their emotions as they share to the current generation a powerful and uplifting message. The group also continues their streak of giving their comebacks truly unique titles.

The music video (which no doubt will be the subject of hundreds of fan theories) sees the group get into Gen Z hijinks as they break away from their current constraints and problems to live a free life. The group really stepped up their acting in this comeback as they brought out their frustrations and anger in their scenes. If the verses aren’t going to get you rocking, the banging chorus is going to get stuck in your head for days as you repeat the line “LOVER WITH A $ SIGN IS A LO$ER.”

These 5 Personalities Embraced Their Natural Curls and So Can You

You go, curl!

Gone are the days of rebonding because natural curls are here to stay.

In the early 2000s onwards, it was rare to see a curly-haired Filipina in commercials. It was all smooth and silky straight hair in television ads, mostly portraying fair-skinned girls with their manes kept glossy. Remember the iconic Sumusunod Sa Galaw Mo song from Rejoice? Fortunately in the present age, more beauty brands have been diversifying the casting in their ads and campaigns, making every Filipina feel represented and empowered despite the stubborn persistence of the unrealistic beauty standard of Euro-centric features imposed by society. With this, more personalities have been making us want to wear our natural curls out, no longer with the fear of being bullied or called names (sadly, those toxic comments still exist). From Kiana Valenciano to Bella Poarch, here are fierce Filipinas that have embraced their curls.
