Meet Ron Roxas, A Queer Fashion Design Student Proving Fashion’s Power In Self-Expression

line
Fashion is more than just the clothes you wear.

Designer, fashion design student, and drag queen Ron Roxas lets us in on his relationship between fashion, self-expression, and his queer identity.

In an age of increased visibility and a fight for equality that has yet to be won, Ron Roxas, a fashion design student taking up BS Clothing Technology at UP Diliman, is fiercely making his own mark. Fashion has always been an important tool for people to discover themselves and a medium for self-expression. That couldn’t be any truer for Ron, especially as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Through his work, the Gen Z creative is shaping a narrative that pushes his creativity and stays true to his queer identity.

His dedication to his craft shows itself through his work, creating boundless looks that resonate with his vision. A story of creativity, freedom, and power is being written through every thread he seems. Along with making clothes, Ron Roxas is also a drag artist, adding to his versatility as a creative. He’s living his truth and owning his expression.

DEFYING BOUNDARIES

As creativity sparks within us, it shapes how we express ourselves and share our visions with the world. For Ron Roxas, this journey began with a personal touch. “It was my older gay cousin who introduced me to fashion design through his intricate illustrations of bridal gowns,” he tells NYLON Manila. “Seeing these designs during a family vacation sparked my interest in sketching fashionable figures. This became a way for me to explore my repressed femininity through each garment I create.”

His journey kicked into high gear in senior high school, where he found a home among creatives and the LGBTQIA+ community. “At Malayan Haus of Fashion and Arts, also known as The Haus, I first experienced a sense of community that allowed me to be myself and explore my passion for fashion,” Ron recalls.

RON ROXAS

Every creation tells a story, and for Ron, that story is deeply personal as he takes inspiration from the childhood that made him. “I usually draw from my own queer experiences, capturing both joy and struggles. My childhood memories, especially dressing up with household items like blankets, towels, and clothespins, inspire my designs. I channel the innocence and wonder of young Ron into the theatrical and imaginative elements of my work,” he explains.

Ron also uses his designs to pay homage to local queer pop culture and history, with nods to legends like Vice Ganda and director Wenn V. Deramas. “My designs are always conceptual, often reflecting the pressing issues in our society. Being queer is revolutionary, and I strive to embody that in my work,” he adds.

As a designer and student, Ron admits that balancing the responsibilities of both isn’t easy. It can be challenging, but he’s found a formula that’s helped him navigate the ins and outs of his creative landscape. “Honestly, I’m not the most organized person. But I believe that time management, hard work, and determination have helped me balance my studies and my dreams of becoming a designer.” Through dedication and a unique perspective, Ron is taking his personal experiences to shape and elevate creative expression, hopefully making a lasting impact as an emerging designer in the local fashion world.

CREATING THE NARRATIVE

Creativity comes in many forms, and for Ron, it starts with an idea. “I always start with a concept. This can come from a single word or a feeling I want to evoke,” says the young designer on the seeds that plant his creative vision. “Then I do my research and create mood boards, which are always in a collage format. This helps me practice the creative framing that I can apply to a design.”

Among the looks that live rent-free in his mind, Ron points to his airmail terno named “Mga Liham ni Maria,” which went viral earlier this year. Believe it or not, it was a look he made for one of his classes. But more than just a piece he needed for a grade, the look speaks to a deeper meaning. “This piece tells the story of OFWs and the exploitation of cheap labor by imperialist countries. We based our design on an existing saya, a traditional Filipiñana skirt, from the UP CHE’s Costume Museum archives,” he explains on the dress he made for his CT 25 class.

When it’s a serve, it’s a serve. And one thing that struck Ron was how one of his most memorable looks yet resonated with people beyond his classroom. “Many have worn it, like Gabriela She Lang and Mercury 007. This school project connected me with the clientele I want to work with in the future, especially drag artists,” he gushes.

As he continues to build his craft and name, Ron has big plans for himself. His dream collab? “The ultimate dream project for me is to make a garment for Vice Ganda. I would know I’ve made it if I get that opportunity. Vice Ganda was integral to my childhood and made me feel represented despite my struggles with gender and identity.”

EMPOWERING HIS FELLOW YOUTH

While he’s still a student, Ron hopes to use his work and growing platform to contribute to community work. “Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community means engaging and immersing ourselves in it. We share similar struggles and resist oppression together. Our community is our strength, and being queer means recognizing that we exist not just as individuals but as a collective,” Ron explains. That advocacy manifests through engaging with organizations like Bahaghari, which fights for LGBTQIA+ rights across various sectors. He also served as a gender desk councilor in the university student council at UP Baguio.

The young creative uses the community as inspiration for his work, and, in turn, wants to use his platform to give back. “I draw inspiration from my stories and those of the community around me, including other queer artists. I always try to lift fellow queer creatives by giving them opportunities to feature their work,” he says.

To be so comfortable with yourself in your space is not always easy. So, take it from Ron and know that being where you need to be is a journey, not a race. “Take your time and don’t rush,” he advises other Gen Zs who are still discovering themselves. “The many labels in our community can be overwhelming, but they are just guides. They can’t encompass every queer experience because each of us is unique. Ultimately, it’s up to you to define yourself.” As time goes by, Ron Roxas is a testament to self-expression as a member of the new generation unapologetically putting themselves at the forefront.

ZSAZSA ZATURNNAH MOVIE

Here’s How You Can Bring The Zsazsa Zaturnnah Animated Movie Over The Finish Line

line
The queen and Filipino animators need your help.

The animated movie adaptation of Zsazsa Zaturnnah is coming, but its creators need your help to finish the film.

Related: This Filipino Student’s Animated Grad Thesis Film Is An Ode To Same-Sex Parents

When it comes to Filipino superheroes, Zsazsa Zaturnnah’s impact on Filipino pop culture is undeniable. The hero was first introduced in the graphic novel of the same name by Carlo Vergara in 2002. It follows a gay man named Ada who turns into the flamboyant female superhero Zsazsa Zaturnnah after swallowing a stone from space. Since its debut, Zsazsa Zaturnnah has gained a cult following among Filipinos, especially the LGBTQIA+ community, thanks to, among other things, the komik’s bold art style and a relatable story of a person trying to find love while dealing with being a superhero.

Regarded as Asia’s first LGBT superhero, Zsazsa has had a few adaptations, such as a live-action movie in 2006, which starred Zsazsa Padilla as the titular character and BB Gandanghari as Ada, and a long-running stage musical. Now, Zsazsa is entering the animated space with an upcoming animated movie. But first, she, and the movie’s creator Rocketsheep Studios, need your help.

SLAY QUEEN

Recently, Rocketsheep Studio, the indie studio behind underrated gems Saving Sally and Netflix’s Hayop Ka!, dropped a new trailer for the Zsazsa Zaturnnah animated movie and gave a new look into her adventures. Titled Zsazsa Zaturnnah Vs. The Amazonistas of Planet X, the movie follows Ada, a gay hairdresser who lives a seemingly boring life and can’t catch a break when it comes to love.

That changes when a rock from outer space lands in Ada’s home. Convinced by his friend to swallow it, Ada transforms into Zsazsa Zaturnnah, a flamboyant female superhero. With his newfound powers, Ada sets out to defend the earth against the fashion-focused Amazonistas of Planet X as they try to take over the planet after their home world suffered under the rule of Male Forms. Among the monsters Zsazsa has to face is a horde of zombies that counts Ada’s homophobic father among its ranks. Things get even more complicated when Ada realizes that his crush only has feelings for his female alter-ego.

FOUR YEARS (AND COUNTING) IN THE MAKING

According to Rocketsheep Studio, the movie will be an 80-minute animated film in English. Local animated movies are a dime a dozen even though Filipino animators have been known to support multiple animated projects from around the world. Rocketsheep is well aware of this, which is why their goals for the movie are to highlight LGBTQIA+ stories and give local animators the proper platform they deserve.

“While our main goal is to tell a funny and heartwarming LGBTQ story, our secondary advocacy is to showcase Filipino animation talent to the world,” the studio shared in a statement. “The Philippines is a go-to nation for animation service work, but sadly, we are not known for ideating and producing animated films. There have been less than a dozen animated feature films in the entire hundred year history of Philippine Cinema. Our team hopes to continue adding to our nation’s animation filmography and, little by little, establish us Filipino animators as not just service providers, but creators, as well.”

ZSAZSA ZATUNNAH

They’ve been working on the project for over 4 years now and plan on releasing it sometime in 2026. But over the years, the studio has faced hurdles in getting the movie funded and most of the funds they’ve used so far have come from their own pockets.

“We have gone to several international film markets and peddled to so many business people who all say the same thing: the project is really cool but the market for it is too niche. LGBTQ culture is still censored in many places in the world. In some countries, it’s even literally illegal to be gay. Traditional film investors are scared of backing Zsazsa, so we are turning to you: You are our only hope!”

ZSAZSA NEEDS YOUR HELP

ZSAZSA ZATUNNAH

IMAGE FROM ZSAZSA ZATURNNAH’S KICKSTARTER PAGE

To that end, Rocketsheep launched a Kickstarter campaign along with the new trailer to help fund the rest of the movie. The studio is looking to raise 40,000 dollars, with $5,400 already raised from 64 backers as of this writing. Donations start at $1 with multiple awards offered to backers depending on how much they give. For just $1, backers get a collection of Zsazsa Zaturnnah wallpapers for their phones. Other rewards include backers’ names being included in the credits, getting a first look at the finished movie, and their likeness being included in the movie as townsfolk and zombies.

Admittedly, it’s sad seeing local animators be treated this way and have to resort to public funding to finish their projects. It’s symbolic of the lack of support the local creative industry, especially filmmaking, gets. But supporting Filipino artists is a cause always worth supporting, so if you’d like to donate, you can check out their Kickstarter page. Even if you don’t have money to give, simple acts such as talking about the movie or sharing the Kickstarter are enough to get the word out.

9 Moments From The Binibining Pilipinas 2024 Coronation Night That Will Forever Be Iconic

line
Queen energy through the roof.

It’s the 60th year of Binibining Pilipinas, so of course, there was no shortage of celebration and iconic moments at the grand coronation night.

Related: A Starter Guide To The Binibining Pilipinas 2024 Coronation Night

Beauty pageants can be breeding ground for some of the most iconic moments to live long and prosper in Filipino pop culture. The recently-held Binibining Pilipinas 2024 coronation night, the 60th in history, saw many queens and queens-to-be take the stage, and a handful of women take their well-deserved titles and crowns.

From humorous moments (classic) to six decades worth of tributes and references, powerful performances to thoughtful answers at the Q&A portion, Binibining Pilipinas 2024 was chock-full of moments that’ll live rent-free in our minds for years to come. Here are some of them below.

IT’S A WOMAN’S WORLD

@iankredondo Iconic Queens of Binibining Pilipinas. 👑 #fyp #foryo #ctto #binibiningpilipinas #binibiningpilipinas2024 ♬ original sound – Ian Redondo 🇵🇭🇨🇦

For the opening ceremony of Binibining Pilipinas 2024, previous queens, not just from Binibining Pilipinas, but across all Philippine pageants took the stage as a tribute to the beauty pageant on its 60th year, such as Pia Wurtzbach, Catriona Gray, Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup, Andrea Rubio, Michelle Dee, Gloria Diaz, and many more.

This year’s pageant also went above and beyond by having an all-women panel of judges and hosting team. The judges all 40 contestants had to impress were Binibining Pilipinas 2024 executive committee member Conchitina Sevilla-Bernardo, entrepreneur Rhea Tan, Miss International 2013 Bea Santiago, volleyball player Fifi Sharma, Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz, Miss Universe 1973 Margie Moran, Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, and Miss International 2023 (Venezuela) Andrea Rubio. Meanwhile, the show was hosted by Catriona Gray, Kylie Versoza, MJ Lastismosa, Nicole Cordovez, and Ruffa Gutierrez.

QUEENS ON QUEENS

History-makers stood right on that stage, tall and confidently beautiful (with a heart), symbols of beauty and global recognition of the Filipina as impactful and inspirational. For the first time, our four Filipino Miss Universe titleholders Gloria Diaz (1969), Margarita Moran (1973), Pia Wurtzbach (2015), and Catriona Gray (2018) stood together in one frame, exuding so much grace and power. It’s giving Binibining Pilipinas All-Winners.

FIVE…HUNDRED?

What’s a pageant without a few slip-ups here and there? It’s normal for a long live show, and it adds a little bit of humor and humanity—and it makes for a meme that’ll probably live forever. MJ Lastimosa misread a prize, and it led to some of the funniest comments that night. “Binulsa ni mare yung 499,500,” a user wrote.

REDEMPTION ARC

Ten years ago, MJ Lastimosa’s national costume during the Miss Universe 2014 preliminaries drew ire for not meeting expectations and for being designed by a non-Filipino designer. This year, the model and pageant titleholder wore a structured corset top with floral accents designed by Bonita Penaranda, a reference to and redemption version of her previous national costume.

THE RETURN OF AN ICON

With the arrival of previous titleholders and queens, one iconic figure in pageantry also made waves with her appearance—Janina San Miguel, famous for her nerve-wracked Q&A moment at the Binibining Pilipinas coronation night 2008. The queen known for lines like “my pamilee…” and “tough ten” won Binibining Pilipinas World that year despite her stumbles, but resigned from the position later for personal reasons. She’s still an icon, regardless, and her return to the pageant stage after years gagged everyone watching.

SB19 SERENADE

P-pop group SB19 brought the music and the vibe, performing their Binibining Pilipinas theme song Win Your Heart and their new single Moonlight. The Kings of P-pop were captivating in their own right as they celebrated the young women vying for the pageant title, and lent their voices perfectly to the coronation night.

TWIST OF FATE

Sixty years ago, a woman by the name of Maria Myrna Panlilio was crowned as the first Binibining Pilipinas 1964. This year, a young woman with the same name, Myrna Esguerra, won the same title. A coincidence? Maybe. A sweet one? Yes.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS WITH HEART

The question and answer portion of Binibining Pilipinas 2024 had a couple of pleasant surprises, some from contestants that didn’t earn a title themselves. Pampanga representative Jasmin Bungay, who won Binibining Pilipinas Globe 2024, was asked by Gloria Diaz “If you were given 30 minutes to talk to the public, what would you talk about?” and she displayed thoughtfulness, intellect, and allyship by talking about the passing of the anti-discrimination SOGIE Bill and how everyone should be treated equally.

@victoriaforuniverse @Vienne Shirin Q&A! Crown for her please? 🥺🧡👸 #vienneshirin #vienneshirinfeucht #binibiningpilipinas2024 #bbp #bbpilipinas2024 #bbpilipinas #binibiningpilipinas #foryoupage #pageantryph #fyp #trending #questionandanswerportion ♬ original sound – 𝕃𝕪𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕤

When asked who she would bring to the 60th pageant and what unique perspective they would bring, Laguna rep Vienne Feucht answered Simone de Beauvoir, French philosopher, writer, and feminist known for her work The Second Sex (1949), which was revolutionary in the work of criticizing the oppression of women. The 22-year old Vienne was clearly influenced by the writer, citing herself as an advocate of anti-violence against women, making her a queen in her own right, too.

ICYMI, the Binibining Pilipinas 2024 coronation night was held last night, July 7. As the pageant’s 60th anniversary, the night was a big moment as dozens of past winners and contestants, including past Miss Universe winners Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran, Pia Wurtzbach, and Catriona Gray, attended a coronation that lowkey became Binibining Pilipinas All-Stars. Ultimately, at the end of the night, two new queens joined the winner’s circle as Abra’s Myrna Esquerra was named Binibining Pilipinas International 2024 while Pampanga’s Jasmin Bungay was crowned Binibining Pilipinas Globe 2024. The latter, in particular, got netizens talking for all the right reasons with her Q&A answer that was the definition of *chef’s kiss*.

SHE SAID: 🗣️ PASS THE SOGIE BILL

During the Top 15 Q&A segment, Jasmin Bungay was asked, “If you were given 30 minutes to talk to the public, what would you talk about?” Her response was a fan-favorite that got cheers from the crowd both at the Araneta Coliseum and online.

“I would be given 30 minutes to talk to the public, I would like to talk about the passing of the SOGIE bill, because in this celebration such as pageant, this community has contributed so much. And in this regard, we can give back to them by supporting this cause because as an individual, it is our responsibility that we ensure that everyone is treated equally, despite their SOGIE,” said the Pampanga beauty in her eye-catching Harvey Cenit gown

What made her answer even better was that the question was asked by Gloria Diaz, who made the rounds online for comments that were widely perceived to be transphobic when she was asked about trans women participating in Miss Universe.

Jasmin’s answer hit the mark not only because she emphasized the importance of passing the SOGIE Bill and advocated for equality and inclusivity, but also highlighted the impact and influence of the LGBTQIA+ community on the pageant world, something that isn’t always reflected in the major pageants. Her saying that to someone who doesn’t think trans women should be in Miss Universe was the cherry on top. TBH, that answer alone deserved Jasmin her Binibining Pilipinas Globe crown.

QUEENS USING THEIR PLATFORMS RIGHT

She also wasn’t the only queen to give a memorable answer during the Q&A though. When asked which historical figure she would like to have as a judge at the pageant’s 60th year, Calamba’s Vienne Feucht chose noted French author and feminist Simone de Beauvoir

“She may not be alive right now, but she is the most influential historical figure to me,” Vienne said. “Because, as an advocate of violence against anti-violence against women and children, she has opened my eyes that we women have the most right to be powerful, because we can lead an entire army. And I want her to see the strong women versions in this generation.” Period! These queens proving once again that a Binibining Pilipinas is more than just looks and beauty, but a woman who is socially aware, advocates for just causes, and champions what is right.

Jasmin Bungay will represent the Philippines in The Miss Globe pageant later this year as she hopes to follow in the footsteps of her predecessor, Anna Lakrini, who reached 2nd runner-up at The Miss Globe 2023. Given her run in Binibining Pilipinas 2024, we have a feeling Jasmin will do fine, and while hopefully still using her platform to advocate and raise awareness for equality.

Science Says This Is The Best Way You Can Take Care Of Your Sensitive Skin

line
It's skin deep.

This Skin Awareness Month 2024, let’s dive into what issues can plague sensitive skin, how we can deal with them, and how science-backed skincare solutions are made available to people who need them.

Related: Yes, A Skincare Order Exists, And This Is What You Should Follow ASAP

With the increase of non-FDA-approved skincare and beauty products in the market, and the ease in which people are influenced by one viral video to try out something completely unsafe, our skin health is getting to be more and more at risk. From DIY skincare to melanotans, there are plenty of dangerous threats to our skin.

Having sensitive skin is already a common condition, and everything from these viral “trends” to climate change have the potential to affect our skin—and not just in a cosmetic way. So, sometimes it’s better to strip it down to basics. If you think you might have sensitive skin, or you just need to learn more about your skin, period, read on to learn about how to take care of it and about Galderma’s Skin Awareness Month 2024 initiatives, like a school campus tour with free skin consultations!

FACE THE FACTS

So do you think you have sensitive skin? Sensitive skin manifests through five symptoms: a weakened skin barrier, dryness, irritation, roughness, and tightness. Sound familiar? If your skin is already sensitive, it’s in your best interest not to experiment with skincare or treatments that aren’t reliable. Even though people’s skin types are different, it’s still far better to adhere to trusted products, brands, treatments, and care.

What makes something reliable if you’ve never tried it yet? Well, the brand’s reputation and actions matter. Are they a familiar name to many? Are they transparent with their ingredients and processes? Are they working with medical and industry professionals? Asking relevant questions and doing your due diligence in researching factors such as credibility, ingredient safety, potential side effects, and scientific evidence are the best way to ensure your skin stays healthy.

SCIENCE-BACKED SKINCARE

There are brands that champion the integration of science with skincare, putting in the effort to ensure their products are backed by science. Cetaphil, a brand under dermatology company Galderma’s roster, has cleansers, moisturizers, creams, and more that are designed based on research and clinical trials, made to address sensitive skin. They’re known to have products that are gentle and even beginner-friendly, if you’re someone who’s just starting out with skincare or want to switch to a different skincare routine.

Galderma designs skincare meant to hydrate and protect all skin types—from dry to eczema-prone. They’re also often ranked among the best and most recommended skincare brands by both regular consumers and skin experts.

But we understand if you’re still wary, so be cautious before fully using any product or treatment on your skin. Try out products on a small patch of skin near your jaw or behind your ear a couple of times, or if you’re brave, try it out in full once. Be aware of any reactions both immediately and in the long run. Your skin will thank you for it.

SKIN AWARENESS MONTH

For Skin Awareness Month 2024, Galderma is embarking on a “Skin Tour” initiative which aims to highlight their commitment to science-backed skincare. Go in-depth, literally, into how products and treatments are made to protect sensitive skin.

“We are celebrating Skin Awareness Month 2024 by embarking on a Skin Tour, blending scientific innovation with expert-led community engagement to promote optimal skin health,” said Abe Mationg, Cetaphil Philippines Senior Brand Manager.

In the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde, Cetaphil and Benzac were in the spotlight as they held their Skin Awareness Month 2024 Campus Tour, where students got to see and explore the various skincare products they offer, get a free one-on-one skin consultation with a dermatologist, and even build their own Sunnies Flask.

Along with Cetaphil, Benzac has specialized skincare solutions designed to address acne problems. Their products contain benzoyl peroxide, which kills bacteria on the skin and clears clogged pores. Acne serums, cleansers, and moisturizers lined the booth shelves, letting students have a look at what might be their next go-to skincare product.

Kaila Dy, former UAAP DLSU courtside reporter and content creator, and Imee Hernandez, also former UAAP UST volleyball player and now professional player for the Cherry Tiggo Team, stopped by, testing out the products and getting consultations from the guest dermatologist along with the students. They also shared their own skincare tips—the one skincare tip that they would give to people, something that they advise to always adhere to even if they forget or skip everything else.

“Always remove your makeup,” Kaila emphasizes. “Even if you’re tired after a party, even if you’re half asleep, make sure you have a quick fix to remove your makeup.”

Imee, meanwhile, stresses the importance of cleansing. “Especially with the weather here in the Philippines. I can’t start my day or go to bed without cleansing my face.”

And the guest dermatologist wants everyone to know that you won’t see a change in your skin immediately after using a new product. For topical products, you have to keep using it for eight to twelve weeks to see “any useful benefit.” Committing to a skincare routine is also important! Ensure you’re always observant of the changes to your skin and research well into how to address it.

How We Can Take Steps Towards More Sustainable Practices In Banking and Finance

line
Towards a better future.

Money makes the world go ’round…for better or for worse. Why do we need to adopt more conscious practices for sustainable banking and finance?

Climate change, climate justice, climate mitigation, climate financing…so many terms, so little time—on this Earth, if we keep acting like we do. By now, we’re all conscious of the harmful, worsening effects of the climate crisis. But let’s take a quick dive into how money plays a role in all this.

In this sense, how can we address climate change and focus on achieving goals of sustainability and climate mitigation in relation to banking and finance? What choices have to be made in order to make sure we’re not hurtling towards self-destruction? NYLON Manila talked to Nikki Lizares, Head of Sustainability at Security Bank, and Avva Dela Paz (@avvasavvy on TikTok), a 23-year old lifestyle and finance influencer, to gain some perspective about the links between finances and climate change, sustainable banking, and the way forward towards a more sustainable future.

SUSTAINABILITY, FINANCE, AND BANKING

The links between finance, banking, and sustainability in all its aspects—environment, economy, and society—are complex, tightly woven together by human practices and processes. Individual and collective choice, not just as consumers but also as advocates, and institutional action go hand-in-hand if we want to address the climate crisis effectively and with expedience.

Financial institutions, even in the Philippines, are well aware of the impact the banking industry has on environment and climate. From funding and investments to processes and business models, the financial industry has major impact on climate change—and in effect, potential major impact in its mitigation.

Banks have been able to lend trillions of dollars to fossil fuel and coal companies, which are the biggest drivers of climate change with their massive amounts of carbon emissions. They also fund other high-impact industries and actions like arms and deforestation. But with the rising threats of the climate crisis, and the Paris Agreement, they’re working on it.

SECURITY BANK

“[Banks] are working to understand the impact of climate change on their operations and are creating climate- and sustainability-linked products, such as green credit or sustainable bonds and loans,” says Nikki Lizares, who has an environmental science background, and has been working with Security Bank to fortify their commitment to sustainability.

From choosing sustainable materials to make their new Wave Mastercard to switching to renewable energy in their offices, Security Bank is taking opportunities to increase positive impact. Their Sustainable Finance Frameworks allow them to pursue green finance opportunities to assess and reduce environmental impact, while also engaging with stakeholders on relevant matters regarding Environmental, Social, and Governance matters.

The Wave Mastercard is a small but important move that represents bridging individual choice with institutional power. Its benefits are also layered—consumers get the satisfaction of partnering with a sustainability-aligned brand, along with financial benefits like a low interest rate (2.5%), 1% cashback on online purchases, and waived annual fees forever.

Security Bank’s commitment to sustainability and innovation has not gone unnoticed. The Wave Mastercard recently won Credit Card Initiative of the Year, ESG Program of the Year (Bronze), and Sustainability Initiative of the Year at the Asian Banking and Finance Awards 2024. These awards recognize Security Bank’s efforts in pioneering eco-friendly financial products and underscore the significant strides they are making in the realm of sustainable finance.

“We continue to push our sustainability agenda forward in line with the pillars of our mission to enrich lives, empower businesses, and build communities sustainably,” Nikki says.

THE PLAYERS

Though it often seems individual choice makes far less impact than actual powerful players changing their ways, the responsibility of harnessing our desire for a better, more sustainable world falls on both institutions as well as individuals and communities. For Avva, being conscious about making financial decisions is a responsibility she’s eager to take if it means making a positive impact.

“I adopted a zero-waste lifestyle to minimize my plastic usage and prioritize mindfulness, especially in my spending habits,” she shares. “I choose eco-friendly products and give my support to businesses with environmental commitments.”

More and more banks are adopting sustainable banking practices and pulling support from climate change contributors through increasing awareness and pressure, though so much more work still needs to be done, and credibility and commitment to what they say they’ll do is under valid criticism.

“Financial institutions hold significant influence in driving sustainability,” Avva notes. “They should integrate environmental considerations into how they invest, pioneer innovative green financial products, and support sustainable businesses.”

THE WAY FORWARD

So, the way forward can not only be driven by the major players and institutions such as government, banks, and schools, but also the public—consumers, across all generations, but particularly by the generation most resolute in their values, outspoken in their desires to live in a better world. And these powers would do well to listen and act, something Security Bank is steadily working on.

Partnerships and Collaborations

Who a bank chooses to partner and collaborate with for any of its initiatives is a factor in their impact on not just climate mitigation, but also credibility. Nikki remarked that the right partnerships can lead to the development of programs and policies that support climate justice and sustainability.

“One example is to work together to establish a network of science and data-trained professionals, offering education and career pathways for those interested in sustainability,” she continues, citing increasing interest among the younger generation to pursue sustainability roles, and clear demand for these positions in the corporate sector.

She adds that “governments can further policies that incentivize sustainable practices in the financial sector and beyond,” which includes setting regulations that encourage green investments, supporting renewable energy projects, and providing tax benefits for sustainable banking business practices.

Investment and Innovation

sustainable banking sustainability climate change financial institutions climate finance banks and climate change sustainable practices

As where banks invest and who they provide loans to are important, what investment opportunities they embark on are crucial to their impact. Security Bank has since pledged to stop financing new coal power plants and end coal financing by 2033.

A high degree of innovation is also necessary for us to be able to shift towards more sustainable banking options. For instance, Security Bank is one of the pioneers in the industry to switch to more eco-friendly material for a credit card—the Wave Mastercard, made from 100% recycled PVC.

Transparency

sustainable banking sustainability climate change financial institutions climate finance banks and climate change sustainable practices

Nikki notes that, “Financial institutions are also encouraged to be transparent about their actions and progress in addressing climate-related risks. This can be achieved through integrated reports and communications with stakeholders, which can also serve as a platform for sharing best practices and encouraging others to take similar actions.”

Awareness and Education

sustainable banking sustainability climate change financial institutions climate finance banks and climate change sustainable practices

Schools also play a crucial role in formulating an understanding of the importance of sustainability in finance and the economy. “This can be done through curriculum development, sustainability-focused events, and partnerships with financial institutions for practical learning experiences,” Nikki suggests.

Armed with this understanding and resolve, we can pressure more institutions to commit to sustainable banking and take steps towards climate mitigation. It’s important to ask questions such as what are these financial institutions investing in? What are they truly prioritizing? And what actions are they taking?

The Power of Choice

sustainable banking sustainability climate change financial institutions climate finance banks and climate change sustainable practices

At this point, we’re pretty aware of the less-than-ideal conditions in which we exist as consumers, manifesting in things such as the illusion of choice and greenwashing. But making a conscious effort to be mindful about environment and justice when we choose what we do, where we put our money, and what we use and speak about are good steps to take.

Choosing to invest in products that are sustainable—made by companies that are actually committed to being sustainable, for instance, and sending a message out into the world that you are consciously making the decision based on the values represented by a product or practice, makes a statement.
