BINI CLAPBACKS

9 Savage BINI Clapbacks To Use When Someone Tries To Come For You

line
Period!

They say whenever a member of BINI calls out a basher, an angel gets its wings.

Related: BINI Continues To Chomp Streaming Records Left And Right

BINI may be one of the most popular celebrities in the country, to the point that the group receives more search inquiries on YouTube PH than global stars like Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, but that doesn’t make them immune to bashers. Like with any public figure, BINI has dealt with their fair share of trolls and netizens who just can’t mind their business. But idol image who? That isn’t the MO for BINI. From dispelling rumors to clapping back at nosy netizens, scroll down for the times the members of BINI fired back at their bashers.

WHEN STACEY DRAGGED A NETIZEN WHO CRITICIZED HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HER MOM

Like any good daughter, Stacey has parlayed her success in BINI to helping her mom, such as when she helped her finish her schooling. So wholesome, we know. But that didn’t stop one netizen from throwing shade at Stacey and her mom, something the P-pop idol deflected right back at them. “[I]t’s a major major major flex to fulfill my mom’s dream kasi kahit anong mangyari, pagbaliktarin man natin ang, nanay ko parin siya and never kong dadamdamin na ako gumastos ng lahat kasi in the first place choice ko ‘to not yours but still thanks for your opinion!” You tell ‘em, Stacey!

WHEN MIKHA CLAPPED BACK AT THE XYLO ALLEGATIONS

BINI MIKHA CLAPBACK

First of all, why should we care if Mikha likes to go out during her free time? She’s a successful P-pop idol of legal age who has the resources to do so, and she has all the right if she wants to. If these netizens thought they could somehow shame Mikha with these jokes, they were wrong.

WHEN MALOI TOLD A FAN TO CHANGE THEIR NAME

BINI MALOI CLAPBACK

It’s lowkey embarrassing that there are fans who can’t read the room and decide to have a near-identical copy of the members’ username online, thinking that there’s no problem with it. Luckily, Maloi is here to wake them up and remind them to stop being irresponsible.

WHEN BINI RESPONDED TO FEELING K-POP IDOL ALLEGATIONS

Just like with any artist entering the mainstream, there will be people who try to make an issue out of nothing. Case in point: some netizens said that BINI were acting entitled when they went through an airport wearing masks, shades, and caps to cover their faces. So, how did the group respond? By wearing white masks, hoodies, and pants ala Jabbawockeez as their airport outfits. And that’s how you troll the haters.

WHEN AIAH REMINDED PEOPLE TO RESPECT THEIR PRIVACY

Even if they are public figures, P-pop idols deserve their space and privacy, too. That was the point Aiah got across when she addressed the issue of a man invading her personal space while she was at a club in Cebu. She took to her Instagram stories to share a statement reminding everyone that it’s not ok disrespect their personal time outside their work. “[T]he least we can ask for is for others to respect our personal time and our humanity,” Aiah wrote. Louder for the people at the back!

WHEN GWEN TOLD SOMEONE TO MIND THEIR BUSINESS

While many see Gwen as nonchalant and reserved, don’t get it twisted, she will defend her sisters when she has to. Just look at a time when she defended Aiah from a netizen who tried to make an issue of her absence from public appearances. “Wag nyo na pong problemahin ang hindi ko naman problema.” Period Gwen!

WHEN COLET WANTED TO “KISS” A NETIZEN

That’s so mother of Colet. We just love how she directly @ the user to show that she means business. It was a clapback so iconic they deleted their account, as they should.

WHEN COLET DIDN’T LET HARASSERS BREATH

@blueststudios colet being protective kay aiah, naka palda kasi si aiah tapos may bumabastos kaya lumipat nalang sila ng pwesto #bini #biniph #binicolet #biniaiah #colaiah #fyp ♬ Salamin, Salamin – BINI

At this point, it should be said that Colet is never one to keep quiet, especially when she and the people close to her feel wronged. Case in point: Colet directly called out men who were disrespecting Aiah during their live. We don’t know if you live under a rock, but disrespecting women in public is never acceptable.

WHEN JHOANNA MADE IT KNOWN HOW A REAL BLOOM ACTS

As more people flock to BINI, Jhoanna made it clear to remind everyone what being a BLOOM exactly means, and that includes being respectful and inclusive. Spoken like a true leader. It’s a message a lot of “fans” definitely need to hear.

HANGOUT SPOTS BARKADA

6 New Spots To Check Out For The Next Barkada Hangout

line
Hangout on Sat, G?

Once you have the location, boom, the hangout comes together.

“Hangout, G?” It’s a straightforward question on the surface, but one that rarely gets a response from the barkada chat. Agreeing on where to hang out is as hard as deciding to hang out at all. It’s a struggle, we know. So, to help you on your quest to see your friends outside the typical house party, we’ve rounded up some recently opened spots around the Metro that you can pitch for the next barkada meet-up.

LA MESA ECOPARK

LA MESA ECOPARK

INSTAGRAM/LAMESAECOPARK

Following its closure for renovations, La Mesa Ecopark has finally re-opened to the public, or at least a part of it. Now under the management of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, the 33-hectare green space in Quezon City is ready to welcome back visitors. For phase one of its reopening, amenities such as the eco academy pavilion, museums, viewing deck pavilion, a food park, and picnic areas are open to the public. Other activities, such as the hiking trails, will be made available to visitors at a later date. Still, open green spaces in the Metro are few and far between, so it’s always nice to enjoy the fresh air and nature with your friends.

SUPERPARK

Who says playgrounds are only for kids? Superpark is the massive adult playground of our dreams and a haven for those looking to have a fun and energetic time with trampolines, slides, games, and much more. Following the opening of its first branch in the Philippines at Eastwood City last year, Superpark recently opened its second outpost at Venice Grand Canal Mall. And the best part? Superpark McKinley is even bigger with over 25 different activities waiting for you. With three main zones, Adventure Area, Game Arena, and Freestyle Hall, get ready for an adrenaline-filled hangout.

SPACE & TIME CUBE+

You’ve probably seen this new immersive attraction on social media recently, and that’s for a good reason. Located at S’Maison, Space & Time Cube+ puts exploring the metaverse front and center with 20 themed attractions, exhibits, and installations that feature great use of interactive projections and displays. It’s a spectacle unlike any other that you’re IG feed wouldn’t mind being part of.

There are a lot of underrated gems when it comes to the Pasig River. For example, there’s the newly opened section of the Pasig River Esplanade. This 250-meter stretch along the river has wide walkways, commercial spaces, and bike lanes. The neo-classical style of the area adds to the rich history that surrounds the Pasig River, not to mention an interesting sight in the Metro. So, when someone asks if they can take a walk by the river, it’s no longer something that can only be done abroad.

CENTRO DE TURSIMO INTRAMUROS

There’s a new museum in Intramuros, and it’s free. Located on the site of the former San Ignacio Church, Centro de Turismo Intramuros, which translates to Intramuros Tourist Center, is a museum and immersive experience that tracks the city’s historical past, present, and potential future. It gives visitors a snapshot of the stories that make up Intramuros. Fun fact, the museum is actually the revitalized and renovated version of the Museo de Intramuros, making it a must-visit if you find yourselves at the Walled City.

5969

A hangout at Poblacion usually consists of either bar hopping or checking out its many gastronomic options. But 5969, which sits on Fermina Street in Poblacion, gives the multi-purpose experience in one building. The first floor of this creative space is 11:11, a tattoo studio, art hub, and accessories shop all in one. You can get a tattoo or piercing, buy accessories, check out some art, and even have a tarot reading while you’re here.

On the second floor is Modular Studios, a studio that can house shoots, video productions, workshops, and more. Across from it is Dim Dim, a Chinese-themed speakeasy perfect for those looking for a casual night out with friends. Finally, the third floor is home to The Kin House, a boutique hotel that wears its art inspirations on its walls with murals done by local artists.

finance money rich fan

FYI, Your Financial Status Doesn’t Determine Whether You’re A Real Fan

line
It's not all about the money, money, money.

Stanning comes in many forms and it doesn’t make you any less of a fan if you can’t afford everything your fave releases.

Related: 6 Red Flags Every Stan Should Avoid

If you’ve been on Pinoy stan Twitter recently, then you’ve probably seen the discourse regarding BINI and what it means to be a real fan when it comes to buying their merch. Admittedly, there is a point to be made about consuming pirated material about your fave, especially when it comes to depriving income from the right people. This mindset though ignores a common fact in all forms of fandomthat being a fan today is not cheap. Money makes the world go round, including being a fan. But your income status is not the determiner of what makes a real fan.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE (RICH)

Pop quiz: name at least three things every fan does. If you said things like buy albums, attend events, go to concerts, or watch movies, then you aren’t alone. The basic tenets of being a fan means consuming anything related to whatever your object of admiration is. Often, these activities are fun and enjoyable. You’re a fan, after all. But these activities and pillars of what it means to be a fan also revolve around the fact that they cost money. You see it all the time with how fans, for example, save up money for a concert ticket to their fave or their newest album drop.

From concert and movie tickets to lightsticks, albums, streaming services, merch, and more, the barrier to entry for any fandom is usually money. These material products are what many associate with what it means to be a fan and money is what helps you access those things.

via GIPHY

This is why it’s not uncommon to find people saying that you have to be rich to be a fan, or at least, have a lot of disposable income. And when you don’t have the newest album or haven’t seen the latest movie, the FOMO sets in with the lack of physical access. Keeping up the spectacle of fandom is not easy, especially in this economy where everything is more expensive. The price associated with being a fan adds up.

Rising costs mean being a fan becomes less attainable for many. Not only does this limit accessibility, but it also views fandom through a consumer mindset that is based on what you spend and not your passion.

NO GATEKEEPING HERE

Obviously, as fans, we want to support our faves in what they do. But the reality is that not everyone has that kind of income to buy every single thing out there. And guess what? That’s alright. Spending money on your favorite media should be something you do because you enjoy it, not because you want to reach an arbitrary standard of what it means to be a fan. Fandom shouldn’t be determined by the money you spend because income ends up being the gatekeeper whether someone is allowed to stan or not, and that should never be the case.

Just because you don’t go to all the concerts or have all the photocards doesn’t make you any less of a fan than those who do. Fandom shouldn’t be reduced to a competition of who has the most items. There’s no points system here. Fandom should be rooted in interest and something more personal.

via GIPHY

You are a fan because you like that artist, not because you want to turn owning their merch into a personality trait. Viewing someone’s worth as a fan through the lens of materialism is just not it. The reality is that not everyone has the funds to shell out money, so people express their support to their fave in their own way, and that’s ok.

There should be no shame in not being able to keep up with all the drops. As long as you stay true to what being a fan means to you and the stanning is grounded in authenticity, then you’re still a fan. What is important is you appreciate the experience, make connections with fellow fans, and find that genuine joy in your fandom. So, stop worrying that you can’t afford their concert ticket or have to buy fake merch because you can’t afford the official collection. There’s more to being a fan than the size of your bank account.

Richard Juan Shares How Inspiration Can Take You to the Next Level

line
Authenticity and multiplicity are key.

Winner of NYLON Manila’s Big Bold Brave “Inspiring Personality” Award, Richard Juan, gives us an inside look into how inspiring narratives are found and created.

Related: Here are the BRAVE Winners for NYLON Manila’s Big Bold Brave Awards: Next Level

Richard Juan is no stranger to the spotlight. His introduction to local media began with a segment on Eat Bulaga! and then a season on Pinoy Big Brother. After landing multiple acting, modeling, and hosting spots on some of the biggest local channels, like ABS-CBN, TV5, and GMA, it might have been hard to imagine how his career could have gotten any bigger.

Juan, however, continues to break down barriers with his newer ventures. In 2021, he showed us that creatives can be business-savvy, too, with the creation of his own production company 28 Squared Studios. With it, his team has been able to take storytelling and content creation to the next level. By championing multicultural narratives from all across Asia, Richard Juan and company have paved the way forward for local filmmakers and content creators to kick down the doors to the global stage. A most recent example is his work on the film “Under Parallel Skies” – a cross-border project that stars Janella Salvador and Win Metawin.

It’s no wonder then that Richard Juan won NYLON Manila’s 2024 Big Bold Brave “Inspiring Personality” Award. By showing us that the path to success is winding and unexpected, creatives from all around find a source of inspiration. So we sat down with Juan to take a look at where inspiration really comes from and how we can harness its power to create fearlessly.

As NYLON Manila’s “Inspiring Personality” of the year, why do you think your projects resonate with so many people?

Thank you so much for this incredible honour! I believe my projects resonate with people because they are rooted in authenticity and relatability. I strive to tell stories that reflect the human experience, tapping into emotions and experiences that many can relate to. Whether it’s a film, a social media post, or a public speaking engagement, I aim to connect with my audience on a personal level. The multicultural and multifaceted aspects of my background also allow me to bring diverse perspectives to my work, which I think resonates with a wide range of people.

When you struggle to move forward with a project, who/what/where do you look to for inspiration?

When I hit a roadblock, I often look back at my own journey and the challenges I’ve overcome. I remind myself of the reasons why I started in this industry and the passion that drives me. Additionally, I find inspiration in the stories of others – people who have made significant impacts in their fields despite the odds. Traveling and immersing myself in different cultures also rejuvenates my creative spirit. Sometimes, just stepping out of my usual environment and experiencing something new can spark fresh ideas and perspectives.

What do you think inspires Gen Z the most in their day-to-day life?

Richard Juan IG Post

Instagram/@richardjuan

Gen Z is incredibly inspired by authenticity and purpose. They seek out genuine experiences and are driven by a desire to make a positive impact on the world. Social media has given them a platform to voice their opinions and connect with like-minded individuals globally, which fuels their drive for change. They are also inspired by stories of resilience and innovation – seeing individuals and communities overcome challenges and create something meaningful resonates deeply with them.

When it comes to your craft, how have you been taking things to the next level?

Taking things to the next level for me means constantly pushing boundaries and exploring new territories. With Under Parallel Skies, we are not just telling a story but bridging cultures and showcasing the beauty of diverse perspectives. Embracing everything that life throws at me has also been a key element in making me who I am today and how I am able to constantly take things to the next level. Additionally, I focus on continuous learning and collaboration with talented individuals from various fields — not just entertainment — which brings fresh ideas and innovation to my main field.

What direction would you like to see Filipino film and television take in the next few years?

I envision Filipino film and television embracing more diverse and global narratives while staying true to our rich cultural heritage. There’s so much untapped potential in the stories we can tell – stories that can resonate both locally and internationally. I’d love to see more cross-cultural collaborations and films that highlight unique aspects of Asian life while connecting with universal themes. Increasing the representation of Filipino and Asian talents on the global stage is something I’m very passionate about, which is why I embarked on such a big collaboration for my very first film project.

We see this trend gaining momentum globally with shows like Past Lives and Emily in Paris in Hollywood, but it’s not as prominent in Asia yet. Under Parallel Skies aims to be one of the early pioneers in this space. I’m grateful to see that major studios like Warner Bros. believe in this vision as well, which has led to our film becoming the first Filipino romance film under their banner.

What advice do you have for young people who want to enter the film industry?

My advice to young aspiring filmmakers is to make sure this is something you are truly passionate about. The film industry is not all easy and glamorous; it involves long hours, sleepless nights, and a lot of hard work. It’s crucial to stay true to your vision and be relentless in your pursuit of it. Understand that the journey can be challenging, and hard work alone doesn’t always guarantee rewards — there’s an element of luck involved as well.

Under Parallel Skies International Release Dates

Surround yourself with a supportive and diverse team who shares your passion and vision. Collaboration is key in this industry, and having the right people by your side can make all the difference. Embrace the challenges, learn from them, and keep pushing forward. With dedication, resilience, and a bit of luck, the rewards can be incredibly fulfilling.

Absolute Divorce Bill, HB 9349

Let’s Talk About The Absolute Divorce Bill

line
Here's what you need to know.

Everyone’s got their own opinion on whether divorce should be allowed here in the Philippines. Let’s discuss some facts.

Related: Gen Zs on What it Was Like Growing Up in Strict Households and How It Affected Their ~Adulting~

Last month, the House of Representatives approved the Absolute Divorce Bill on its third (3rd) and final reading. As one of the two countries in the world to not legalize divorce (the other being the Holy See), it’s a long-time coming for proponents of divorce. Still, it has ways to go before being law. The bill will now have to be transmitted to the Senate, where it must pass three (3) readings before being forwarded to the Office of the President. At such point, the President may: 1) sign it into law; 2) veto it and send it back to the Senate; or 3) let it lapse into law with no further action – this happens after thirty (30) days upon receipt.

With all this in mind, the bill and its supporters still need to overcome several hurdles. Yet there’s already so much talk about it – people drawing lines and speaking out in support or disapproval of it. A lot has already been said about the bill, and divorce in general, and more will continue to be said until this ends. With all that noise, it can get overwhelming to the point where you just want to tune out. So,  let’s talk about it as we break down divorce, the bill seeking to legalize it, and everything in between.

What’s in it and why it’s needed

Just so everyone is on the same page, let’s review: there currently exists three (3) types of “defective marriages” in the Philippines: Void Marriage (treated as if no marriage happened at all), Voidable Marriage (declares the marriage as valid until declared annulled by the court), and Legal Separation (which allows the couple to live separately but still recognizes them as being married). Each defective marriage may only be dissolved when specific grounds/conditions are met.

Divorce, as laid out in the Absolute Divorce Bill being proposed, would provide an alternative route of dissolution. Existing grounds for legal separation and annulment are already made grounds for divorce as well. The new bill most notably adds the following: separation in fact for five (5) years, sex reassignment surgery, other forms of domestic abuse, and irreconcilable differences. Authors of the bill also note that divorce would be both cheaper and faster than current legal remedies available. Additionally, it would allow the parties to remarry.

It it further worth mentioning that a similar divorce bill was passed by the House in the last Congress, but was not acted upon by the Senate. This begs the question of whether the Senate will act on this new bill or not.

To read the documents in their entirety, you can access the official government site of the House of Representatives here.

Not for everyone

Like most political issues, the Absolute Divorce Bill has become a polarizing topic of conversation, especially in a predominantly Catholic country. It’s not hard to imagine why. Our culture is very family-centric, and this bill is sure to greatly impact many families should it pass into law – for better or worse. The question of whom divorce will affect the most seems to be at the heart of the debate. For example, individuals who are happy with their partners, and therefore do not need to consider divorce, feel that such a legal measure is not necessary.

However, these arguments fail to take into account the important note that: just because something becomes available, doesn’t mean you have to use it. Just because couples in the Philippines will gain the ability to divorce does not mean that you are required or forced to do so. It simply exists to increase options available to those in need. This may be why some lawmakers, while opposed to divorce, are instead open to expanding current legal remedies such as annulment and making them more affordable.

Another common criticism from dissenters of the bill is that the existence of such a legal remedy “threatens the sanctity of marriage” and “threatens marriage as a religious institution”, which is kinda funny considering that cheating is still an issue even when people want to pull the religion card. However, lawmakers are not allowed to create laws that favor or disadvantage any religion whatsoever for any reason (this is what separation of church and state is all about). Additionally, if you think that the ability to divorce threatens the stability of your marriage in particular, perhaps the problem is you and not the bill. Your time would be better spent becoming a better partner so that your partner won’t want to leave you.

Why you should speak up

At current, the Manila Standard reports that where the Senate stands on the issue is currently one more against, with many senators still undecided on the issue. Assuming that the Senate will not simply sit on the bill and let it die, that means the decision could go in either direction. This is where we all come in.

Public opinion continues to be a powerful tool to move, inspire, and affect policy. You should speak your mind on the issue. This is an instance where social media can be extremely powerful. While one could argue that corporate interests do more in the way of swaying a politician’s actions, remember: these people hold positions in an elective office. If they want to be reelected they need to court the votes of as many persons as possible. As is the case with most highly controversial issues, the purportedly undecided politicians will side with public sentiment. And FYI, the 2025 midterm elections are less than a year away.

So if you feel strongly about this topic, now is the time to use your voice. You might end up fighting with your friends or family who hold a differing opinion to yours. But being able to have these discussions with each other respectfully is an integral part of moving forward together as a society.

However, before you do voice your opinion, it is important to have all the facts at your disposal. So we highly encourage everyone to read the proposed bill in its entirety before passing judgment.

Want your voice to be heard on this issue? We at NYLON Manila want to know what you think about the Absolute Divorce Bill, and you can send us your opinions through this link

GEIA DE VERA filipino gen z cinematographer cannes film festival

How A Filipino Gen Z Cinematographer Made Her Way To the 2024 Cannes Film Festival

line
From chickens to Cannes.

Who could have known that a young cinematographer would head to Cannes one year after graduating college?

Related: Meet Gabriela Serrano, The Young Filmmaker Ready To Put More Of Women’s Stories In The Forefront

Geia de Vera is remarkably self-assured. Not at all in a haughty, narcissistic way, but in that distinct way found in people who know their capabilities inside and out. A cinematographer and Communication graduate of the Ateneo de Manila University, Geia has been involved in media and film for a long time, and she just got a major break in her burgeoning film career.

GEIA DE VERA filipino gen z cinematographer cannes film festival

As the cinematographer for Arvin Belarmino’s short film Radikals, Geia spent twelve days in France earlier this May for the 77th Cannes Film Festival, a stunning feat for an up-and-coming filmmaker. Radikals was selected for the La Semaine de la Critique of Festival de Cannes, or Critics’ Week, a section of the film festival that showcases films from emerging filmmakers all over the world.

This short film was her first true foray into professional filmmaking, and it was as thrilling as it was nerve-wracking. In an interview with NYLON Manila, the 24-year old talks about her experience at the prestigious film festival, standing her ground, proving herself, and holding onto the dream.

FROM CHICKENS…

Picked by Arvin Belarmino himself, the young Geia de Vera’s work reached his team through mutual friends in the industry, and he believed she would be able to execute his vision. Armed with the technical know-how Radikals is described as a film about “A young rookie from a bizarre chicken-dance (bakte) group who faces a heckler after being the worst dancer at a performance—leading him to a series of strange events that reveal what the group does to their weakest link.

Initially unfamiliar with Arvin Belarmino, Geia quickly learned how the writer and director has made a name for himself. The Filipino filmmaker has made it to Cannes before, when his debut feature Ria (2022) earned him a spot at the Festival De Cannes Cinéfondation La Residence. Though apprehensive because of the scale of the project, she was very much down for it, because “as a starting DP, you just want to get as much work.”

But upon reading the script, she was totally sold. “It was bizarre, it was crazy, it was out of this world.” She was able to imagine how she would shoot the sequences as the images came alive in her head.

“I remember when Arvin and I prepped for this wild and bizarre film last December, his extensive interest for chickens led us to curate and influence movement with the native Bakte dance of Cavite,” Geia writes in a Facebook post celebrating their achievement. “I had a goal of lighting it eerily to expand the feeling of mystery around the dance-group.”

During their first pre-production meeting, Geia asked Arvin why there were so many chickens in the film, and he said, “Wala, I love chicken! I love eating chicken, eh.” She mirrored this answer when I asked why she loves cinematography. “It’s just because I love doing it. It’s the feeling.”

…TO CANNES

GEIA DE VERA filipino gen z cinematographer cannes film festival

Geia’s worked mainly on student films before, but her talent speaks volumes. With Radikals making it to the shortlist of Critics’ Week film lineup, this marks a milestone in her filmmaking career—one that she never expected to reach one year fresh out of college.

In Cannes, Geia felt like she was in a dream. “It’s like a completely different world.” Meeting fellow filmmakers from around the world and learning from each other, building networks and connections, and engaging with the cinema and film culture of France and other creatives—that’s what it was all about. And experiencing it all so young not only validated her as a filmmaker, but also strengthened her ambition, despite knowing how it looks that such a young girl was attending such a prestigious festival.

GEIA DE VERA filipino gen z cinematographer cannes film festival

She even joked that maybe people thought she was just an intern. “I was so young, and [people] didn’t know that I was there for a premiere.” Other filmmakers would approach her, calling her “the 24-year old DP” in pleasant surprise, exchanging business cards and discussing the films they made. Easily an overwhelming experience, Geia drank it all up in all its glory.

One of her favorite experiences was watching a Cannes film at the IMAX Cineum Cannes, comedy-horror The Balconettes (2024), and hearing people laughing, clapping, and generally just reacting to the movie. The theater experience is a unique one, able to be experienced solo, but also shared with a community. And in this era of streaming, it’s a welcome and wonderful experience. “It’s great to experience it with a set of people who genuinely love and want to be there and watch a film in theaters.”

Though there’s no denying the potential and changemaking actions of the youth today, there’s also still preconceived notions about young people working in their fields of interest, and Geia, entering a set with a professional team, knew she would experience that judgment firsthand. As a young woman, an aspiring cinematographer who just graduated from school at that, working on a professional film set, there is unfortunately an expected undermining of her ability.

“Especially if you’re working with older professionals,” she shares. “Parang you get the feeling na they’re like ‘bata pa ‘to, hindi pa ‘to ganun ka-galing.'” She felt like her presence was under doubt, even recalling a moment someone asked her outright “Do you know what you’re doing?”. She didn’t let it get to her, though, instead knowing that her own skill would speak for itself. She was committed to executing her director’s vision, she was meticulous, and she was prepared.

That talent and determination didn’t go unnoticed. Arvin and the producers praised Geia’s ability, hyping her up now and then, sharing laughs and tears, especially when the call came that Radikals made it to Cannes. “What I appreciated about [Arvin], even though he’s already at a point na may pangalan siya, he never really cared about my age. He loved my ideas, he loved our collaboration, and he was never sexist about it.”

Working with a strong professional team and having a support system in all the mentors that have guided her throughout her career, all the people that have given her a chance, Geia’s grown to be a well-versed cinematographer, skilled and eager to learn, and always appreciative of the people she works with. “You’re only as good as your team, and I’m happy that I got to work on that project with the people that I really trust that I’ve worked with.”

FOR THE LOVE OF CINEMA

GEIA DE VERA filipino gen z cinematographer cannes film festival

Like many creatives, Geia faced pushback from the people around her about pursuing a career in film.

“My family was very worried up until now,” she reveals. “Up until Cannes, they didn’t want me to be in the film industry. They had a different path for me.” Especially as someone new to the industry, it’s an uphill battle not just to get your name out there, but also to earn money. Though not getting much support from her family (until now!), she was held up by her mentors, her titos, in the industry, who saw her potential and encouraged her to go on.

No matter how uncertain things are or how difficult it gets, Geia is driven by a gut feeling to pursue her passions, because it just feels right. Losing herself in seeing things play out right in front of her and being able to frame it and tell a story moment by moment—it’s all so magical. “When you see things come to life right in front of you…it’s really such a different thing.”

After getting a taste of being in the big leagues, Geia de Vera is learning to balance being a professional and holding onto that youth that got her to where she is—to the eagerness and fresh ideas held by this generation. She’s growing, as a person and as a filmmaker, holding onto her dreams with the same grace and strength she uses to hold a camera.

RAINBOW WASHING

Rainbow Washing 101: Why Pride Goes Beyond Putting A Rainbow Sticker On A Product

line
What Pride really is meant for.

It has been said before, and it will be said again. Pride was, is, and will continue to be a protest.

By now, you’ve probably heard about what went down at the Pride Festival in Quezon City. Billed as the largest Pride event in the Philippines, the protest, march, and gathering was sadly canceled due to harsh weather conditions. It’s an unfortunate outcome, but one made even worse by the stories that came out of the event. From non-allies attending solely to see specific artists, questionable speakers and sponsors, actual members of the LGBTQIA+ community who marched that day barred from entering QC Circle, and more, it shows us yet again one of the constant stains of Pride: rainbow washing.

HI GAY

For decades, June has been celebrated as Pride Month. Every June, the LGBTQIA+ community is celebrated, supported, and championed as the community and their allies continuously fight for their rights. And, as Pride continues to be more accepted by a wider audience, we see companies and major corporations show their support. How though can be the questionable part.

via GIPHY

Their “outreach” normally manifests in LGBTQIA+ marketing such as Pride-themed collections, changing their logos to feature the rainbow flag, and incorporating more LGBTQIA+ lingo in captions. It’s made worse when these efforts to commercialize Pride rely on stereotypes that just reinforce prejudices against the community. This consumer-focused mindset to celebrate Pride brings with it its fair share of downsides, known commonly as rainbow washing.

On one hand, companies holding Pride campaigns puts more visibility to the community. But on the other, they can become superficial efforts that have no real impact on supporting the community. It builds a fake image that brands are supportive while still implementing harmful policies that discriminate against the community. This performativity of co-opting Pride and LGBTQIA+ culture by brands and companies might seem like a sign of progressive values, but it often boils down to surface-level support meant to turn a profit. Ironically, monetizing Pride in the name of supporting the community is the exact opposite of what Pride is supposed to be.

IT’S A PROTEST

Pride marches began in earnest with the Stonewall Riots as the queer community in New York fought back against police that were harassing their few safe spaces in the city. In the Philippines, the first Pride marches in the country happened in the early 90s, from lesbian Filipinas who marched during International Women’s Day in 1992 to MCC Manila and ProGay Philippines organizing their own march in 1994.

Corporate Pride takes away from Pride as a protest against discrimination, harassment, and oppression and for queer liberation. Just look at how the US Embassy had a speaking slot at the QC Pride event even though justice has yet to be achieved for the killing of Jennifer Laude. Capitalist interests distract from the needs of an already marginalized community as the reason why we celebrate Pride in the first place gets lost.

Yes, it’s not inherently wrong for Pride to be celebrated in bigger ways. Also, not all corporations support Pride just for a quick check and have genuine interests behind them. The struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community are also struggles of the common man, after all. Allies who genuinely understand the plight of the community is always a bonus. But as we see time and time again, a marginalized community entering the mainstream means they lose their story in the first place. Pride should never be reduced to rainbow collections, brand deals, sponsorships, and performative actions of support that just take advantage of consumers. It should continue to be a protest that spotlights and amplifies queer individuals, voices, advocacies, and stories.

SAY NO TO CORPORATE PRIDE

Luckily, it doesn’t have to be this way forever. As consumers, we can vote with our wallets and show support to brands and companies that have authentic and genuine outreach to the LGBTQIA+ community. As for brands themselves, allyship and solidarity go beyond slapping a rainbow sticker on a shirt. Put your money where your mouth is and support the LGBTQIA+ community, organizations, advocacies, and marginalized sectors. What the community needs is acceptance and the right to be free to be themselves without judgment, and that extends to external AND internal decisions in the company. That is what it means to genuinely support the community.

Born in Seoul and raised in South Korea and the Philippines, YouTuber Jessica Lee has kept a foot in both worlds all her life. Having started a career in the idol industry as a member of HIGHTEEN before they debuted, and a contestant in survival show Idol School (2017), Jessica moved back to the Philippines and started her own YouTube channel, which now has well over a million subscribers.

Jessica’s content focuses on food and lifestyle, and she takes her viewers with her as she finds, tries, reviews, and mukbangs all kinds of food, from street food to restaurant-level meals. She also has a popular series called TRABAHO, where she tries out the different occupations in the Philippines, from call center agent to taho vendor. Her eagerness to showcase the food and lifestyle of Filipinos, openness to explore and learn more about us and the culture, and appreciative, warm personality make for an instant connection with her audience.

And she stays true to her words—watch a single Jessica Lee video and you’ll get it. For instance, in November 2020, Jessica donated that month’s YouTube revenue to causes that help the victims of Typhoon Ulysses.

How does it feel to win Favorite YouTuber at our NYLON Manila Big Bold Brave Awards: Next Level?

Winning this award feels absolutely incredible! It’s a huge honor to be recognized by such a renowned platform, and it shows that all the contemplation I put into my channel was truly worth it. Most importantly, I’m grateful to my subscribers and supporters who made this possible. This award isn’t just for me—it’s for everyone who has been part of this amazing journey.

How do you take your work and platform to the next level?

I constantly strive to innovate and adapt. Remaining informed about the latest trends and news helps ensure my content stays relevant and engaging. My guiding principle in content creation is to foster connection and evoke empathy—what I call a sense of humanity. Collaborating with other creators—which includes my team members—exploring new content formats, and listening to my audience’s feedback are pivotal strategies. I also invest in continuous learning and self-improvement to bring fresh perspectives and ideas to my channel.

What do you want people to always take away from your platform and content?

I wish for my viewers to experience a sense of connection in a world where we increasingly feel disconnected. As an aspiring idealist, I believe that positivity can overpower negativity. My goal is to let positivity be the driving force behind an inclusive community where people celebrate the beauty of Filipino and Korean cultures and, more broadly, the beauty of life. I hope my platform encourages viewers to embrace diversity, pursue their passions, and remain curious about the world around them.

What are some things that you love about Philippine culture and why?

Philippine culture is incredibly rich and vibrant. It’s the culture that has shaped me into who I am today. I love the way the titas always make sure that I have eaten something. I love the unspoken rule where passengers in jeepneys pass the fare from one person to the next until it reaches the driver. And I love the colorful murals you can find at the most unexpected spots within the Philippines. It’s the warmth and hospitality of the people, the strong sense of bayanihan spirit, and the diverse traditions and heritage of the Philippines that I fell in love with.

youtuber jessica lee content creator big bold brave awards winner food content travel

Filipino food is another favorite—it’s a delightful blend of flavors that tells a story of history and culture. Not only that, it just tastes amazing. The resilience and positivity of Filipinos, even in challenging times, is truly inspiring. It’s a trait I admire deeply and strive to embody in my own life.

How do you navigate making content about the Philippines without falling into the trap of sensationalism that usually comes whenever a foreigner talks about the Philippines?

I approach my content with respect and authenticity. It’s crucial to genuinely understand and appreciate the culture I’m showcasing. I engage with locals, listen to their stories, and ensure that my content reflects their perspectives accurately, neither beautifying nor denigrating it.

Avoiding stereotypes and focusing on meaningful and respectful representation helps me stay true to the essence of the culture. Sensationalism doesn’t align with my values—I aim for depth and sincerity in all my content, always striving to offer a genuine portrayal.

How do you make sure your content improves and that you’re always keeping things fun, fresh, and exciting for your audience while still keeping the essence of your content?

I regularly analyze feedback from my audience to understand what resonates with them and what can be improved. Staying curious and open to new ideas ensures that my content evolves while maintaining its core essence. One of my core values is to present something that has never been seen before in the Philippine content creation industry, pushing boundaries while staying true to my roots.

What’s the best thing about being someone that has a platform and can influence other people?

It’s the sense of connection I get to feel with my audience, and hopefully vice versa. It’s humbling to be able to make a positive impact on other people’s lives. Whether it’s inspiring someone to learn something new, motivating them to pursue their dreams, or simply bringing joy through my content, the influence I have is both a privilege and a responsibility. It’s truly fulfilling to know that I can contribute to meaningful conversations and create a sense of community among my viewers!

What do you want to say to all the fans that have voted you as their Favorite YouTuber?

To all my subscribers who voted for me as their Favorite YouTuber, thank you from the bottom of my heart! Words cannot express how grateful I am. Your support means the world to me, and I wouldn’t be here without you. This award is a testament to our shared journey and the bond we’ve built over the years! I’m committed to continuing to create content that matters. Thank you for believing in me and for being an incredible part of this adventure!

Vietnam is a place rich in culture, though much of it in the last century was filled with war and political turmoil. Landmarks, museums, and sites dedicated to its tumultuous and colonial history are plentiful, and definitely worth visiting to learn a lesson or two. But its history and culture is far more complex than the conflict and struggles it has faced. Diverse influences, like the Chinese, have woven their way into Vietnamese life, culture, and tradition, but it is its own rich tapestry. There are temples, olden towns and villages, ruins, art, and more to find in Vietnam.

There are also museums about the history, roles, and contributions of Vietnamese women, as well as indigenous groups, arts and sciences, and more. From the diverse languages to the historical artifacts, there’s a lot to learn about the country, and what better way to do that than by visiting?

NATURAL BEAUTY

Vietnam has diverse landscapes and environments that could make even the shortest trip an enjoyable one. Whether you’re a beach bum or a winter wanderer, different places in the country has something for you. They’ve got sun and sand down in Ha Long Bay, late-year winters in Sapa, rainforests and greenery in Mộc Châu, and so much more. If you’d like to get out of the cities here and there, the natural wonders of the tropical country are endless, each a sight to behold.

CITY & NIGHTLIFE

@vietnamdailytours There are plenty of amazing things to do in Hoi An at night. It’s a beautiful city to discover at night, even if you just decide to wander the streets of the Old Town or take a stroll alongside the Thu Bon River. There is a variety of nightlife to enjoy in Hoi An too, with a number of bars and happy hour deals to be found. The vibrant nightlife of Vietnam contrasted with its natural wonders make for an explorer’s dream. In cities like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, the evenings are lit up by all the city lights and signs to rooftop bars, restaurants, live music bars, night markets, and even the Saigon River dinner cruise. Though not as wild and crazy as more popular nightlife destinations out there, boasting a more chill atmosphere, you’re still sure to enjoy your evenings.

FRIENDLY FACES

It’s no fun to visit a place where the people are rude. Granted, there are rude people everywhere, and we can’t ever generalize an entire population, but the Vietnamese are known to be warm and welcoming, friendly and personable. Make it part of your itinerary to drink coffee or beer with the locals, make new friends, and broaden your cultural horizons.

SCENERY AND ADVENTURE

Relax at zen resorts, explore caves, paddle a basket boat on the river—immerse yourself in the country by doing the most and not just walking around sightseeing, especially if that isn’t your thing. You can trek up the mountains or scuba dive in the waters of its nearby gulfs and seas, ride motorbikes across the countryside or spend a day at the Sun World amusement park.

Vietnam caters to all budgets—a great incentive for those of us who want to travel without breaking the bank. It’s also good for short stays. It’s great to travel there with family and friends, or even solo. Vietnam is generally a safe place to travel to, but you should still always be wary of scams, petty theft, and pickpockets just as you should be everywhere else. It’s emerging as a quite popular destination these days, and if you think it’s worth it to find out how you like it, then it’s time to add it to your bucket list.
