Attention: Charlie Puth Dropped His New Single, Light Switch, And TikTok Heard It First

line
Consider this a light bulb moment.

After months of teasing and taking us through the process of his creation on TikTok, Charlie Puth sheds light on his long-awaited new music, starting with the delightfully addicting, Light Switch.

Ah, superstars, they’re just like us mere mortals. Ever since Charlie Puth found solace on TikTok early on in the pandemic, he’s been obsessed. Whether it be jumping on trends, stitches, and duets, filming with odd camera angles, or nerding out on all things music, the singer and songwriter gets really up close and personal in his fragments of expression, revealing a side to him that is real, relatable, and yes, ridiculous.

“Everybody kind of made fun of me at first for focusing so much on TikTok,” he shares. “It is a safe place, and what I fell in love with originally is that people are being and vulnerable.” In this context of connection, Charlie Puth has carved out a more expansive space to entertain and escape, giving us everything from random pitches of his mundane everyday, dissections of music, and a lot of what ifs.

“What if there was a song that started off like…” begins Charlie Puth on TikTok, trailing off his thought with a cartoon-like phonetic imitation of robot sounds. In the extension of the slightly chaotic video, there was a splicing of inserts that revealed bass and drum tracks on a song he was working on back in September last year, before wondering, “there’s something missing. There should be a weird sound effect, just a random noise or something like that.”

The Sound Of Charlie Puth

Silly as it may seem, his tapping of surfaces in the studio led him to a light switch. Nondescript? Sure. But this was where the hallelujah chorus rejoiced, because the recorded flicking sound, layered with the existing instrumentations and the lyrics, would mark the earliest chronicle of what would eventually become the aptly christened, Light Switch, Charlie Puth’s first single of the year, as well as the introduction to his long-awaited follow up to the compelling release of 2018, Voicenotes.

Marked by a fitting light bulb emoji, this well-documented journey breaks down the song from the singer-songwriter’s perspective and engages the fans, too. With these slices of life on TikTok, we are not only clued in on the creative process of Charlie Puth, but also given insight into Light Switch, which he worked on with longtime collaborators, Jake Torrey and JKash. Being granted this much access and attachment has taken on such a personal meaning both for the artist and the audience, as in our hero singing in the shower and brushing of the teeth levels of intimacy.

“On the songwriting level, it was really cool to share this song with the fans while I made it, so they felt like they were involved at the very beginning of the song, like they almost wrote it with me,” he says in a conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1. “I love the fact that Light Switch has been teased for months, and people are making bootlegs of it. Some producers have even taken, run it through Isotope, and taken the acapellas, and made their own versions of Light Switch. I love that. I think music should be twisted and pulled in many different directions. That was just the goal for this album, and I’m really excited for people to hear it.”

Flip The Switch

From the snippets heard on TikTok for months, Light Switch immediately feels familiar. Yes, the yearning and heartache synonymous to Charlie Puth is still prevalent, but this time seamed subtly in the surprising sensual song. In the progression of the musical exposition, the retro-tinged track is buoyant and warm, the tempo racing from a steady pace to faster strides, much like a heart beating in anxious anticipation.

@charlieputh

If this song gets 100,000 pre saves I’ll finish it and drop it. Link in bio ?

“You turn me on like a light switch / When you’re movin’ your body around and around / You got me in a tight grip / You know how to just make me want you, baby,” relents Charlie Puth in the song, which was heard first on TikTok. “Why you always wanna act like lovers? But you never wanna be each other’s / I say don’t look back but I go right back, yeah.” Ouch.

Despite admitting to be “very bad at expressing my feelings,” Charlie Puth is incredibly self-aware, which is evident in his otherwise deceptive music. This is especially true in Light Switch, where feelings once tucked away to the dark backend of memory and lingering longing are brought to well, light. Confronting these residual contradictions is all but necessary, but doing so with a groovy, funky pop song that we can dance to our heart’s content? Even better.

We Spotted This Sweet Detail In Donny Pangilinan’s Bachelor Pad

*Goggles how to be a teddy bear"

It’s no secret that Donny Pangilinan loves his fans. And if you need further proof, just take a look at what he included in his home.

Ever since Donny Pangilinan joined the showbiz industry in the late 2010s, the young star became a near instant teen sensation. He became one of the hottest new stars to watch out for and today, Donny stands as one of the most in-demand young actors of his generation. A major component to Donny’s success is the love of his fans.

Donny’s fans are a dedicated group of people who work tirelessly to support him in all his endeavors. And Donny, being the gentleman that he is, reciprocates that love back. He has expressed his appreciation for the love and support he receives. He even goes out of his way to give back to his fans. And that love was further solidified when we spotted this heartwarming detail in Donny’s new home.

A GIFT FROM THE FANS

In Karen Davila’s recent vlog, the veteran journalist visited Donny’s home for an interview and a house visit. According to the young star, he chose to live on his own because he wanted a bigger space compared to the condo he already had. Donny loves the outdoors so he chose a place where he felt less restricted.

The duo toured his new home and Karen became curious why he had a giant stuffed teddy bear in his living room. He revealed that a lot of his fans like to give him gifts and the teddy bear was one of the recent one. He felt that it was “cute” to place it in the living room. Donny then went on to say that he really uses and keeps the gifts the fans give him. Despite how big Donny has become in just the past couple of years, it warms the heart to know that he keeps sentimental items like this. Our minds are already running as other fan gifts Donny has kept in his home.

Other interesting details we spotted in his home include a shelf with some of his awards, some of which were voted by the fans. He also has the complete set of He’s Into Her books, a LEGO figurine of a Stormtrooper’s helmet he assembled himself, and a signed jersey from Stephen Curry that he won in an auction years ago.

HAPPY WITH BELLE

Of course, you can’t talk about Donny Pangilinan these days without mentioning Belle Mariano and his uber popular love team DonBelle. He shared that two first met in 2018 and even played Mobile Legends together. Though nothing much came from that. Karen then asked Donny the golden question, “Kayo ba talaga ni Belle?”

While Donny was understandably tight lipped about it, he did say that he and Belle have a great relationship. “Belle and I are in a happy place right now.” When asked what he liked about Belle, Donny revealed that he likes how Belle goes about her life and doesn’t care about what other people say. He also revealed that he talked to Belle about the criticisms she has faced, telling her that “Those voices don’t matter.”

Another eye opening moment from the interview was when Donny opened up more on his faith and how that shapes his life. If you’ve been a fan of Donny for a while, you know that his spirituality is an important part of his character. It’s clear that he has a strong faith in God and that has helped him remain humble and guided him on his journey. He even tithes, which means giving 10% of your income to the church. He explained that it was his way of giving back and that 10% doesn’t mean much in the end.

The rest of the vlog is filled with interesting tidbits from his relationship with his family, to his beginnings of his career, Donny’s style of courting, his soon-to-be built beach house, a look at his unfinished shoe room, and more. It’s a great watch for any Donny Pangilinan fan and those who are curious about the young star. Watch the vlog below.

She Said Body! Our Fascination With The Breastplate

line
All hail, the warrior woman.

Your body is your armor.

If we trace the history of fashion’s current fascination for breastplates, one will learn that it actually has been around for centuries. A staple in the military, the combat-ready ancient armor protected the wearer from any type of injury. The breastplate became a symbol of strength. A celebration of the female form and human anatomy, it didn’t take long until it made its way into contemporary fashion.

First seen on the runways of Yves Saint Laurent in 1969 when he collaborated with sculptor Claude Lalanne, the breastplate became high art and was only worn by the best. In the 80s, Japanese designer Issey Miyake went on to create his own in a molded, futuristic rendition, famously worn by Grace Jones. Provocative couturiers like Thierry Mugler and Alexander McQueen also took the female dimensions in the most extreme sense, often inspired by mechanisms and nature.

Decades later, we find modern icons like Zendaya and Kim Kardashian wearing the armor on the red carpet, on the glossy pages of magazines. Of course in the local scene, we also have the likes of Nadine Lustre and Nicole Cordoves wear it and left all of us speechless. Read on below to see more of our favorite females who wore the breastplate.

1. NADINE LUSTRE

Back in June when she was promoting her concert, Absolute Madness, Nadine Lustre wore a golden breastplate by Filipino designer Job Dacon. Lensed by BJ Pascual, the shoot also referenced paintings by Salvador Dali. Nadine has also worn different renditions of the armor twice, one in her music video, and in her year-end performance by designer Vilrique.

2. NICOLE CORDOVES

During the Bb. Pilipinas 2021 coronation night, Miss Grand International 2016 1st-Runner Up Nicole Cordoves left us in awe when she wore a purple breastplate as she hosted the event. It was molded onto her body by artist Studio Haring in collaboration with designer Just Bonita.

3. SUE RAMIREZ

Sue Ramirez made her mermaid dreams come true when she wore a blue breastplate that matched her purple wig. Like a siren in the flesh.

4. SAMANTHA BERNARDO

Is it just us or did Miss Grand International 2013 1st Runner-Up Samantha Bernardo turn up the heat in a flaming breastplate?

5. STEFFI ABERASTURI

Miss Universe Philippines 2021 2nd Runner-Up looked every bit like a golden goddess when she posted this photo a few days before the coronation night in September last year.

6. ISSA PRESSMAN

For the music video of her single Monkey Business, Issa Pressman wore a white breastplate paired with baggy pants for a more contemporary take.

7. MJ LASTIMOSA

SB19’s Bazinga Is Now The Longest Running Number One Song On Billboard’s Hot Trending Songs Chart

line
Hate niyo'y gasolina, period!

From rookie group to breaking Billboard records, SB19 is really out here proving that they are well on their way to music superstardom.

SB19 has done it again. But honestly, are you surprised? 2021 proved to be a great year for the P-pop group and 2022 is looking to be just as successful, if not more so. After starting the year by performing at the international ROUND Festival at the beginning of the month, SB19 just reached an important milestone not just for them, but for OPM in general.

BAZINGA!

Their song Bazinga logged a seventh record breaking week at number one on Billboard’s Hot Trending Songs chart, which tracks “global music-related trends and conversations in real-time across Twitter.” Previously, Bazinga and BTS’s Butter were tied for six weeks each at number one. But the latter edged out the former in the end. With this feat, the group broke a few important records. Bazinga is now currently the longest running song at number one on the chart, surpassing Butter which reached the peak on six occasions. Bazinga is also the first OPM song to have racked up the most weeks at number one on a Billboard chart.

This placement marks the 12th week it has been on the chart, nearly the entire time the Hot Trending Songs chart was established. Back in December, SB19 made history when Bazinga reached the top of the chart, making it their first number one on Billboard. So far, they are the only act to replace BTS at number one. As of this writing, only two acts, BTS and SB19, and three songs, Butter, Bazinga, and Permission to Dance, have gone number one on the aforementioned chart.

A RECORD BREAKING RUN

According to Billboard, on the week of Jan 15-22, Bazinga logged an impressive 9.3 million Twitter mentions. They added that the song has continued its momentum thanks to its music video premiere in October, a performance at the 34th Awit Awards in November, performing the song at the BYE2021 year end music festival in December, and including it in the set of their ROUND Festival performance this January. It’s important to note though that the Hot Trending Songs chart just tracks what songs people are talking about in real time, not necessarily what they’re listening to. That said, seven weeks at number one is truly a momentous feat.

Elsewhere on the chart, Slow Mo by BamBam debuts at number seven, making it BamBam’s second solo entry on the chart. Polaroid Love by ENHYPEN lands at 15, making it the group’s seventh entry on the chart and the most of any act so far. Finally, Louis Tomlinson’s Walls makes it debut at number 19.

A GREAT START TO 2022

Image

No doubt that SB19 has worked hard throughout the entire process. But let’s not forget the tireless efforts of their fans, A’TIN, who have worked day in and day out to make sure that Bazinga had done as well as it did. They deserve as much, if not more recognition for their efforts. It’s amazing to think that SB19 has been able to achieve all of this when you realize that the group was once considering to bow out from the game completely. But clearly, they’ve proved the haters wrong and it’s quite appropriate it’s through a song like Bazinga. If this is what SB19 has achieved in January alone, who knows what else the band will achieve this year.

If you’re in the mood to celebrate this success, SB19 recently dropped their merch collection, so you may want to cop a piece or two. Also, Pablo might drop special project this January 28, Friday if this teaser is anything to go by so keep an eye out for that, too.

VICTON Introduced An Environmentally Conscious Way To Buy Albums And Photocards

line
Staning while helping the environment.

With VICTON’s latest offering, the K-pop boy group has shown us what an environmentally friendly future would look like for buying albums.

Related: Beyond Just Stanning, See How These Filipino Fandoms Have Been Giving Back

No K-pop experience is complete without purchasing an album and a photocard. The culture of buying and collecting albums and photocards has ingrained itself deeply amongst fans, which comes with the exhilaration of unpacking the album and hoping that the photocard you pull is that of your bias. People have spent thousands, if not more, just to acquire the whole collections or their fave photocard.

But this kind of culture can also be detrimental to the environment, not to mention the carbon footprint it leaves behind. Having to purchase sometimes boxed worth of albums just to get all the photocards and have the albums just linger can admittedly be a waste. This is why K-pop boy group VICTON’s recent way for selling their latest album has received praise and attracted attention for how it helps combat the impact the album and photocard culture can have on the environment.

NEW WAY TO BUY AN ALBUM

On January 18, the group dropped their single album, Chronograph. They then announced that you would be able to purchase the album in two versions. The first is a physical album that comes with everything you expect. But the second is called a “platform album.” For a limited time, fans can purchase a digital version of the album where you will only be mailed the photocard and be emailed a download code for the album. Some companies, like YG, have taken steps to be more environmentally friendly, announcing that future BLACKPINK, WINNER, and TREASURE album packaging will be eco-friendly. Through VICTON’s new album, this kind of system has been implemented.

The effort is reminiscent of what Lorde did when she dropped her album, Solar Power, in 2021. Instead of a typical physical album, she released a music box filled with items made with environmentally friendly materials, as well as a download code for the album.

SPEND AND WASTE LESS

This alternative way to purchase an album comes with a slew of benefits. First, the digital version is actually cheaper than the physical edition. Second, you lessen garbage as there is no need to produce a physical album. You also aren’t limited to purchasing either or, so you still can get a physical album if you want. Fans also do not need to worry about album sales as the virtual version counts towards digital sales. If fans don’t receive the photocard they want, they can just purchase another photocard without having to go through the hassle of discarding another album.

It’s no secret that some fans buy albums in bulk in order to get a chance to participate in fan signs. Because of this, people end up with dozens if not hundreds of unused albums that either collect dust, are thrown out, or are sold to someone else. This digital process prevents this from happening and lessens the waste of materials and resources. You still get to participate in fan signs and increase sales and do so in a sustainable way.

THE FUTURE FOR K-POP?

Where can I buy K-pop albums for wholesale? - Quora

This digital option hasn’t been widely adopted in the K-pop industry, but it honestly should. Here, those who want a physical album or just the photocards can both be satisfied. The whole process essentially hits two birds with one stone, you get to support your faves and incur less trash. Now, there’s nothing wrong with showing your love to your favorite groups, but lets also do so in a way that isn’t detrimental to the environment. Good on VICTON for doing this and hopefully more idols will follow as well.

benny andallo junya watanabe virtual insanity hat

This Filipino-British Designer Remixed The Jamiroquai Virtual Insanity Hat For Junya Watanabe

line
Is it 1996 all over again?

In an homage to the award-winning music video for Virtual Insanity, Junya Watanabe re-interprets its sense of cool, topping it all off with the fun, fresh, and funky hats by Filipino-British designer, Benny Andallo.

When you type “Jamiroquai Virtual Insanity” on Google, the search will not only yield a list that ranges from the prophecy-like nature of the song lyrics to the enduring relevance of the futuristic music video helmed by Jonathan Glazer, but also relevant related results for the hat. Well ahead of its time in a relatively blissful pre-Y2K era, the delightfully danceable fusion of funk, acid jazz, and nu disco was not only a generational stronghold with its insightful introspection and critical observation of an evolving human condition, but it also was a rich source of cultural imprints that are still relevant to this day. This impact was the driving force behind the imagination of Junya Watanabe for his fall 2022 menswear collection, which was released as a fashion remix of sorts, over the top hats and all.

Together with Jamiroquai frontman himself, Jay Kay, Junya Watanabe breathed new life to the style codes of Virtual Insanity. In this contemporary telling, the nonchalance of the 90s was well in place, as realized in the oversized athleisure and statement toppers that would make the Cat In The Hat proud, but this time more mindful and respectful to the traditions it borrows from.

Thoughtful in approach, the Tokyo-based designer said in the show’s press release, “in order to realize some of our ideas, we invited the participation from the Secretariat of Culture of Mexico, as well as the renowned Pendleton Woolen Mills.” This way appropriation was well avoided under the watchful eyes of those dedicated to “the preservation, promotion, and dissemination of heritage and culture diversity.”

This Is The Remix

This was by no means a replication of what things were fashion-wise, but Junya Watanabe certainly captures the energy of Virtual Insanity fit for the future. From denim decorated with patchwork, paneled functional outerwear, and striking sweaters incorporating the eye-catching colors and fringe of the Mexican sarape (blanket-like cloak), as well as of the Native American patterns, the pieces felt cool and current, which was underscored the inherent restraint and meticulousness of the brand. And to complete the look made signature by Jay Kay, Junya Watanabe commissioned Filipino-British designer, Benny Andallo to punctuate the collection with an assortment of his wildly imaginative statement hats.

Fun, funky, and fresh, there is a sense of child-like joy that emanates from the work of Benny Andallo, who instead of being limited in the convention of millinery describes himself as a silly crown designer. “That’s so old school; I’m actually quite anti-that,” he tells Vogue in an interview. There is a decided defiance and disruption to the pieces that the Filipino-British creative fashions. From out-of-this-world imaginations, a riot of textures and colors, and a whimsical vision, we reckon that his plush pieces would drive the Mad Hatter in Alice In Wonderland over the edge in excitement. In fact, his designs have been worn and favored by the likes of Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Beabadoobee, Olly Alexander, and CL, no big deal.

“I always want to make a hat that I could wear on a night out,” continues Benny Andallo in the same conversation. “My intention always goes back to looking and feeling fab.” But more than the playground of head accessories, which the Central Saint Martins-trained designer fondly calls adult toys, the foundation of his creations lie in consideration and intuition.“I make every hat myself and make design decisions as I go; it’s very instinctive,” he says. “Creativity keeps your mind stimulated and distracted from the current bleakness. I have an urge to create for brighter days of the future.”

Hats Off

“I was making hats for myself out of different scraps of fabrics; I had loads of fabrics from university and from [fabric] hunting,” recalls Benny Andallo, who began this design focus because he wanted to spice things up. “Everything is spontaneous. I’ve accumulated so much fabric, so I work with whatever I have, unless someone orders custom.” Working with this conscious limitation is a parallel to what Junya Watanabe employs in his exploration of Virtual Insanity. In this fashion jam session, the collection includes upcycled and original garments from Jay Kay, Pendleton Woolen Mills, Levi’s, New Balance, Karrimor, Carhartt, and Stepnew Works Club, which is a step up in terms of sustainability. Fittingly, this further informs the synergy of the two designers in terms of comprehension and commitment to the future.

Completing the reenactment, the parade of looks was brought to life in the same way it did in 1996, dizzying in its shifts, slides, and steps. However, unlike the award-winning music video that helped stand the ground of Jamiroquai, the modern-day iteration was more sterile than industrial. With a brightly lit hall of white tiles, the vibrant and visceral vision of Junya Watanabe shimmied in the same style of Jay Kay, soundtracked to Virtual Insanity, of course. And just like it did then, the hats that complemented were a standout. From the mind of Benny Andallo, the solitary overgrown hat expanded into eye-popping woolly and wonky domes, printed baker crowns, and the not-to-be-missed fuzzy toppers.

Despite what one might assume, this intersection of time, points-of-view, and disciplines oddly makes sense. In this meeting of minds, what began as a throwback has been thrust into a proposition that will have multiple generations gravitating towards this virtual insanity. After all, not much has changed. We’re all still mad here.

Belle Mariano Is Making These Beauty Trends Her Signature Look

line
Just some of the beauty trends Belle Mariano's been constantly nailing.

Belle Mariano’s face card never declines.

Belle Mariano’s proven herself time and time again, not only as an actress, but also as a singer. Still don’t believe us? Her newest single Rise is pretty much her most subtle clapback to the haters in her album, Daylight. As she sung her heart out in the MV, we couldn’t help but notice some of Belle’s favorite beauty trends that are slowly becoming her signature look. From her wispy bangs to her peachy blush, here are some looks you can copy from Gen Z’s newest It-girl.

READ MORE: 6 Reasons Why We’re Into Belle Mariano: The Newest Gen Z It-Girl

1. WISPY BANGS

Belle Mariano’s been sporting wispy bangs for some time now. Aside from big, blown out curls, this hairstyle suits her the best because it frames her face. Sure, they can get quite annoying since it has a tendency to poke the eyes, but that’s what we do for beauty anyways, right? They don’t call it tiis ganda for nothing.

2. GOLDEN GLOW

Belle’s highlights never fail to blind us—in the best way, of course. It’s also a go-to trick if you want to achieve the glass skin look without worrying too much about looking like a glazed donut.

3. PEACHY BLUSH

It’s about time we embrace our cheeks. While contouring mostly dominated the beauty world, Belle Mariano decided to make the blush a part of her signature look, highlighting her amazing bone structure.

4. BUSHY BROWS

Well-groomed brows will always make or break any look. In Belle’s case, we can tell it’s one of her makeup artists’s non-negotiables given she was blessed with bushy brows.

5. GLOSSY LIP

Gorgeous, gorgeous girls wear ✨lip gloss.✨ Like Belle, try overlining your lips a bit using a lip liner one or two shades darker than your natural color, and top it off with gloss.

Beabadoobee Makes History As The Youngest Filipina To Perform At Coachella

line
Another win for Pinoys in the global music scene.

When beabadoobee takes to the stage for her Coachella performance, she will achieve both a major milestone for her career and for Filipinos in the global music scene.

Related: Beabadoobee Uncovered: Bedroom Sessions and a Journey to Self-Acceptance

After a two year delay due to the pandemic, the Coachella music festival is finally back on, barring any unforeseen circumstances. Arguably one of the most famous music festivals in the world, Coachella has always been the place for superstars to solidify their status and up-and-coming acts to get their name out there. Coachella 2022 promises to be no different.

Harry Styles is set to headline the show on April 15 and 22 and some are even speculating that he might drop new music between now and his Coachella set. Billie Eilish already made history as the youngest artist to perform at Coachella in 2019 and she’ll make history again as the youngest act to headline the festival when she takes the stage on April 16 and 23. And Kanye West (or should we say Ye), is bound to surprise when he headlines on April 17 and 24.

But aside from who’s headlining Coachella 2022, this year’s festival is also exciting because it will feature a history making performance from rising Filipina musician, beabadoobee.

HISTORY MAKING

Not only has beabadoobee been included in a premier roster of artists that includes Ye, Doja Cat, Joji, Karol G, Maneskin, and Kim Petras, but she will also be making history as the youngest Filipina to perform at Coachella at just 21 years old. She also joins an extremely short list of Filipinos who have graced the iconic festival.

Fellow Dirty Hit labelmate No Rome performed his hit song Narcissist with The 1975 in 2019. Also in the same year, H.E.R. delivered a wonderful set. And DJ Manilla Killa brought down the house in 2016 when he performed there as part of a duo called Hotel Garuda. Beabadoobee won’t be the only Filipino to perform as rising musician and Manila born Eyedress will also be playing at the festival. It’s no secret that for many musicians, Coachella is one of those career-defining milestones.

A CAREER MOMENT

Beabadoobee will be among the many names and artists set to take the stage in Indio, California. She is set to perform on the Sundays, April 17 and 24. Getting to perform at Coachella is an achievement for any artist, especially for someone like beabadoobee who has seen a relatively fast rise in her career. Born Beatrice Laus, the 21 year old was born in Iloilo City before moving to London at three years old.

She released her first single, Coffee, in 2017 to positive reviews which actually helped her get signed to Dirty Hit Records. But her claim to fame came in 2020 when Canadian rapper Powfu sampled Coffee in his song, Death Bed (Coffee for Your Head). The single became a smash hit, especially on TikTok, eventually raking in over 1.1 billion streams on Spotify alone. Since then, Bea has dropped her critically acclaimed debut album, Fake It Flowers, in October 2020 with her latest release being the EP Our Extended Play in June 2021.

Tickets for Coachella 2022 are either already sold out or extremely hard to come by. So, if you are going, give beabadoobee’s performance a watch. You’ll see why they call her an artist to watch out for. Hopefully, more Filipinos will get a chance to perform at Coachella (we’re looking at you Olivia Rodrigo) and even OPM acts whose talents are more than worthy of the famed festival.

Belle Mariano Proves Her Haters Wrong In The Music Video For Rise

line
We love to see it.

Belle Mariano strived for years and faced many challenges to get to where she is today. And Rise is the embodiment of how all that hard work has paid off.

Related: Belle Mariano Brings The Vocals And The Feels In Her Debut Album Daylight

Belle Mariano didn’t get to where she is now on a gilded path. Ever since she was a child actress, Belle slowly but surely rose through the ranks to become the Gen Z star that she is. Along the way, she was bashed, maligned, and discredited by those who thought she didn’t deserve her success. But, in the end, she persevered through those battles.

This is what Rise, the closing track on her debut album, Daylight, is all about. The empowering anthem is not just an inspirational track about reaching your goals, it can also be seen as bit autobiographical of Belle’s journey so far. And with the release of the song’s music video, Belle Mariano is showing that she indeed is fighting for what she wants and is worthy of all the success she has and will attain in the future.

I’M ON THE RISE

Written by fellow Gen Z star Jayda, Rise is a perfect close to Belle’s album because it’s reflective of her status from being just an actress to superstar in the making. That is exactly what Jayda was aiming for when she wrote the song. On her TikTok page, she revealed that she first researched on Belle’s life and felt that an inspirational anthem like Rise was fit for her. With solid vocals and a soaring instrumental, Rise sees Belle Mariano tell the world that you won’t bring me down. And even if you disregard the song’s connection to Belle, Rise is still a solid fight song for anyone who has ever been doubted about achieving their dreams.

The music video is reflective of this mindset. It starts with Belle leaving an audition and looking dejected as she feels like she didn’t get the part. We then see her in her bedroom and lying down on a billiards table, a subtle reference to He’s Into Her as the billiards scene between Max and Deib is one of the show’s most iconic.

We then see her hold a ball with a number 10 on it, a reference of how it took a little over 10 years for Belle to be where she is and how one of her first roles was in Princess and I in 2011. After starting out in bit roles and side characters, Belle is now taking center stage. It is also during these scenes that we see tweets bashing and judging Belle. While her performance in He’s Into Her has been met with praise, when it was first announced that she was going to play Maxpien, it was met with controversy and criticism from many.

I’M READY TO TAKE FLIGHT

As the song reaches its climactic moment, this is when Belle finally reaches her potential. For most of the video, Belle is in indoor locations. But by the end, she runs outside in a grassy field and takes off her jacket, showing that she has arrived. The tweets then disappear and the final scene has Belle triumphantly watching a TV with her acting being praised as best actress worthy and that Rise was the name of the fictional movie that Belle was starring in in the music video.

The best part about all of this is that this is just the start of Belle’s up and up career. At just 19 years old, Belle Mariano has so much more ahead of her, such as her first ever digital concert Daylight this January 29. Belle Mariano truly is on the rise.

Meet The Filipina Supermodel That Thierry Mugler Adored

The Filipina supermodel's first show in Paris was actually Mugler's. Legends only.

With the passing of French fashion designer Thierry Mugler, we look back at one of his favorite muses—Filipina supermodel Anna Bayle.

Living in the age of excess was an entirely different world back in the 80s, especially with fashion. Coming from a third world country, making a name in a place that was dominated only by white women seemed farfetched. This is the story of tenacious talent, Anna Bayle. You see, she had just lost her job in retail and headed to Europe, coming to the point of no return until she was a star.

Standing at 5’10” with her morena beauty and signature long black hair, Paris was her golden ticket, and soon after, she was discovered by French visionary and acclaimed designer, the late Thierry Mugler. As Anna shared in her blog back in 2008, “the French fashion people are very different; they want to discover beauties. Their idea of beauty is also quite different. When Thierry Mugler hired me for my first and only press show, I was immediately plucked from obscurity and put beside the big stars.” It was the age of pomp and pageantry in fashion and only the models who had the flair for theatrics landed the job. Anna Bayle stood out and immediately became one of Mugler’s favorite muses.

THE FIRST ASIAN SUPERMODEL

The designer was applauded during his heyday not only for his impeccable techniques and shows that married pop culture and glamour. Mugler was a staunch advocate of casting models, holding the line for diversity, especially at a time when colorism in the industry was severe. In a podcast interview with Tim Blanks where they talked about his muses, he shared that most of them look like “they were dropped from another planet.” Anna Bayle fit the bill and he photographed her for most of his campaigns, with the most memorable to be her standing on an iceberg in heels. She walked for most of his shows, becoming one of the models that defined the 80s along with the ranks of Iman and Jerry Hall.

It wasn’t long until Anna Bayle rightfully earned the title, The First Asian Supermodel. She was doing nine shows a day back when others only had one, becoming the darling of the fashion greats like Christian Lacroix, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, and of course, the designer close to her heart, Thierry Mugler. Anna understood that he paved the way for her, recalling that he liked to help people see their potential. “I want my models to be bigger, stronger, and taller than common mortals,” he once said. To think that her only background in fashion was in retail after having her pre-med at the University of the Philippines, Mugler knew that Anna was bound to be a star.

“Everyone was in love with him in a ‘creative collaboration’ sense. He could seduce everyone from the make-up and hair people to us models. He had a knack of getting everyone around him to give their ‘body and soul’ to his collection,” she detailed in her blog. Anna Bayle was transformed by Mugler in many ways before her retirement in 1994: a mythical sea creature, an angel, a goddess, an empress. If he was able to give that space to a Filipina who once dreamed big, then anything was possible for the dreamers that came after. And this persistence of possibility inspired by his evocative work continues to this day.

Thierry Mugler knew the power that every woman was capable of, especially in the case of Anna Bayle. Until the very end, he was still enthralled with his art, designing for the likes of Beyoncé, Cardi B, and Kim Kardashian, who he described as “love at first sight.” It’s the same creative force and unapologetic vision that led him to becoming one of the most legendary fashion designers that ever walked the earth. And just like that, his magic will be missed, but certainly not forgotten. For because of the legacy of Thierry Mugler, we too can be bigger, stronger, and taller than we thought was possible.
