Landing in Style: The Onitsuka Tiger SS22 Collection Debuted in Milan Fashion Week

line

The fashion nexus of Milan meets the neon-lit nightscape of Tokyo in a fashion film that celebrates the power of expression, even when there’s no one watching

The cold gust of wind, the faint glow of neon signs in the distance, and the eerily silent streets—who would have thought that this would be the setting for the energetic merger of fashion and sports in Onitsuka Tiger. The Japanese brand returned to the main stage of Milan Fashion Week with a look at their Spring/Summer 2022 collection in a film that’s both ominous yet thrilling. It’s a unique take on the typically bright and sunny outlook on these seasons, but it still captures the unanimous spirit of exploration, discovery, and nonconformity.

The Travelling Tiger

Staying true to their pursuit of heritage and innovation, Onitsuka Tiger travels back home to Tokyo with a new collection of vibrant color blocking and horizontal stripes on tracksuits, jackets, dresses, shorts, and skirts. Prominently featured is the tiger print, an homage to the brand name and an apt visual for the arrival of the Year of the Tiger in 2022.

The fashion presentation was captured in a head-bopping, picturesque film entitled “MILAN-TOKYO”, under the creative direction of Andrea Pompilio, that transports the Milan runway to the streets of Tokyo. The journey sees viewers traversing through bridges basking under the moonlit sky, expressways lined with taxis yet void of traffic or pedestrians, tight alleyways lined with the fronts of convenience stores and hidden bars, and concluding on a skyscraper rooftop lined with neon lights that form a runway—a visual callback to an airport runway, which was the first location seen in the film.

Bretman Rock and Bella Poarch have a lot of things in common. They are both Filipino. They are cousins (yes, that’s true). They’ve appeared in each other’s content. And now, they are both nominated at the 2021 YouTube Streamy Awards. In the early morning of October 21, YouTube unveiled this year’s nominees for the 11th Streamy Awards, which recognizes the best internet video creators, shows, and campaigns on 2021 across 47 nominees. And Bella Poarch and Bretman Rock came out as some of the biggest nominees, both receiving multiple nominations.

BELLA POARCH AIMS FOR THE BIGGEST AWARD OF THE NIGHT

Bella makes her debut as a first-time nominee with three nods. She is nominated for Creator of the Year, the biggest award of the show. She’ll go up against last year’s winner MrBeast, as well as big names like Addison Rae, Emma Chamberlain, and Charli D’Amelio. Bella is also nominated for Short Form and Breakout Creator. 2021 of course has undoubtedly been a breakthrough year for Bella, The year saw her, among other things, enter the music scene with the bops Build A B*tch and INFERNO, walk at Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty Vol. 3 show, and strut her way through Paris Fashion Week among other multiple red carpets. So, these well-deserved nominations at the Streamy Awards are just further validation of her success.

BRETMAN ROCK’S NEW SHOW GETS SOME LOVE

As for Bretman, he’s been in the industry for a while now, but he’s still a top creator. His survival show, 30 Days With: Bretman Rock, received two nominations, one for Show of the Year and the other for Unscripted Series. The show was a collaboration with YouTube Red that showed a new side to Bretman. He spent a week in the Hawaiian jungle while also dealing with unresolved issues. You can watch the five-episode series here.

Across all the nominees, who half of them are nominated for the first time, MrBeast leads the pack with seven nominations. He is followed by Emma Chamberlain with four nominations. The 2021 YouTube Streamy Awards will stream exclusively on YouTube this December. The exact time and date of the show will be given at a future date. As SB19 famously sang, “Yeah, we gonna go up.” After making history as the first-ever Filipino act to be nominated for Top Social Artists at the 2021 BBMAs, the group is looking to make further history as they were just nominated for Best Southeast Asia Act at the 2021 MTV EMAs.

SB19 FOR BEST SOUTHEAST ASIA ACT

The nominations were revealed on October 20, Wednesday, and SB19 was the sole Filipino nominee in the category. In fact, they are the only local act to be nominated at the 2021 MTV EMAs. The other nominees include Ink Waruntom from Thailand, JJ Lin from Singapore, K-ICM from Vietnam, Lyodra from Indonesia, and Naim Daniel from Malaysia. The Best Southeast Asia Act category was first added in 2013 and past Filipino nominees include Ben&Ben, who was nominated last year, Nadine Lustre, James Reid, Moira dela Torre, and Sarah Geronimo. If SB19 wins, they join Sarah Geronimo as the only Filipinos who won the category as she won it in 2014.

OTHER NOMINEES

SB19 aren’t the only artists with Filipino roots nominated at the 2021 MTV EMAs though. Olivia Rodrigo makes her debut at the EMAs with five nominations: Best Pop, Best Song, Best Push, Best US Act, and Best New. Filipino-American rapper Saweetie is also nominated for Best New alongside Olivia. On the K-Pop side of things, BTS, BLACKPINK’s Lisa and Rose, Monsta X, NCT 127, and TWICE are nominated for Best K-Pop. BTS is also nominated for Best Pop, Best Group, and along with BLACKPINK for Biggest Fans. In general, Justin Bieber leads the pack with eight nominations, followed by Doja Cat with six.

On Self-Worth And Self-Love, Ruru Madrid Just Gets It

line
When shift happens, trust that he will meet the adventure and unknown head on.

It is fairly easy to pass judgment and make assumptions, especially for those pedestalled people, but as Ruru Madrid reflects, he’s just like you, navigating life as best as he can—tumbles, missteps, scratches, and all.

Oh sh*t,” he mutters under his breath, looking around hoping that nobody caught the singular expletive that escaped his mouth the very second he settled into a comfortable sitting position on the cool concrete slopes of the empty skate park we were in the middle of. Quickly shifting into what appeared to be a reverse plank, Ruru Madrid grimaces as he slid the sole of his Converse sneakers, a seasonal leather high-top pair in an electric Barney-like purple shade, revealing what appeared to be a most unwelcome streak of brown. “Oh, sh*t,” he repeats, this time with an emphasis in punctuation, before letting out a hearty fit of bellied laughter.

At this point, he quickly darts for the nearest puddle of water, splashing with all his might, before shaking off the excess well, excrements on the peripheral growth of grass. Without being fazed by the unexpected and clearly unwelcome smear of muck, he quickly got back on his mark and resumed the shoot as if nothing interrupted the momentum earlier. But before the steady rhythm could stretch out into a willing pace, the skateboard he rode on unscrewed itself, forcing himself to dismount even before he could even attempt a shred.

“Shit happens,” he realizes a little after the amusement settled, pivoting into a moment for deep thought. “I remember, the last time I was ever on a skateboard before today was years ago when I was a kid pa,” he recalls. “The scars on my face were from an accident I met going downhill, which forced my mom to break my board in sheer anger.” Shaking his head at the childish inanity of it all, Ruru Madrid doesn’t shy away from the stories that have shaped him in one way or another, crafting and seemingly perfecting that devil-may-care narrative to his name.

The Becoming Of Ruru Madrid

Walking the green expanse of Circuit Makati, which by now was again bathed in a wash of warm gold, perhaps the day’s last chance to show off as the day was intermittently disturbed by threatening rain showers, seemed like the perfect opportunity to continue the conversation of nostalgia, which Ruru Madrid was only so willing to get back to.

“Yes, I mean, everybody says you only live once…that’s true. We do not know what’s going to happen in life. Hindi natin alam kung hanggang kailan lang buhay natin, life is too short. So, kailangan i-enjoy mo na ‘yan hangga’t kaya mo. Kahit sobrang delikado, gagawin ko na lahat—nagmo-motor ako, nagsu-surf ako, kasi hindi naman ako makakapag-dictate ng buhay ko,” he explains, affirming that all those missteps have come with a necessary to learn and grow from. “Ang mga sugat naman naghihilom naman ‘yan at tsaka matututo ka. ‘Di ba nga, nagse-skateboard ako downhill at naaksidente ako, but I still got up. Hindi lang siya matututunan sa simpleng bagay. ‘Pag dating din sa life, ‘pag alam mong ‘di mo pa kaya, ‘wag mo munang sagarin, which is what happened to me then.”

Turning even more serious, Ruru Madrid shifts the conversation to something more encompassing, revealing an understanding that many still understandably struggle with. “Sometimes mahilig tayo mag desisyon ng basta-basta, pero hindi natin iniisip na that’s too much or parang hindi pa natin kaya,” he says. “Kailangan pa natin ng konting training para makaya natin. So, kanina, nakabalik ako mag-skateboard kahit papano.

Never mind if his first attempt at speeding was met with an unforeseen dismantling or that the sky above quickly shifted from gleaming, glinting sunlight to a looming overcast of dreary gray, but the most important thing is, he finally got the chance to have a go at his childhood pastime, just as fearlessly as he used to.

And that’s precisely who Ruru Madrid is: unbothered, unflinching, unapologetic.

Never Too Early

Inscribed on the ink made permanent on his skin are the words: Live with passion. No mere stringing of words together or stamping of a socially acceptable cliché, the young man breathes this maxim, using it as the necessary guiding light to navigating his life’s many swerves.

Ako kasi to be honest, happy ako sa lahat ng ginagawa ko, happy ako sa kung ano ang binibigay sa akin. Ang gusto ko lang mailabas is kung paano ako ka-passionate sa craft ko, and I think maipapakita ko ‘yun pagka nakakagawa ako ng roles na sobra akong nacha-challenge. Kasi dun ako nag-start eh. I mean, I started sa indie films, and dun kasi, as in walang sugarcoat, walang halong anything—you can do whatever you want. And ‘yun ‘yung gusto ko, which is what I mean to explore,” he begins. “Kasi kapag gumagawa ka ng ganong klaseng projects, matututo ka pa eh.”

To live with passion, he says, is to go balls deep into whatever passion besets you, let it consume you, and allow it to thrive from the bounds of your efforts. “I mean, isipin mo na lang, everything na nangyayari sa atin, or ako, sa pagiging artista ko, since bata ako, sobrang gusto ko na kung nasaan ako ngayon,” he says. “At ayokong hayaan na mawala ‘yun, that’s why every time na may ginagawa akong projects, or kahit na simple things, iniisip ko na laging last na ‘yun—that’s why ganun ako ka-passionate sa ginagawa ko.”

This fear that exists when talking about one’s passion isn’t anything new, especially when it furthers into the great lengths people will go to just to make things happen. But what sets it apart in significance from soul to soul is an understanding that goes beyond validation (and often vindicating) victories and reaping recognition. “I mean, I’m scared na mawala siya, but never ako makokontento sa ginagawa ko. And I know it is too early to say that. That’s why ayoko mag-stop mag-learn and mag-explore, kasi feeling ko ‘yun ‘yung nagpu-push sa akin to be better. And that’s my mindset always: kailangan every time may ginagawa ako, lagi akong better. To be honest, I’m very competitive—not with others or mga kasabayan ko. I’m competitive with myself.”

Understanding It Better

Often this shift in perspective manifests itself when something of great importance is forcibly taken away, which in the context of show business would mean later on, when the klieg lights start to dim on a once exuberant up-and-coming career. But for Ruru Madrid, it is a reality he is only too aware of, because as he firmly reasons, nothing is certain in this world. “Ayun ‘yung ayokong pumasok sa utak ko: Ayokong makampante, kasi for sure mas marami pang mas bata sa akin na nangangarap makapunta rin dito sa ganitong klaseng stage, ‘di ba? That’s why ganon ako ka-willing and pursigidong matuto,” he asserts, which naturally parlays to the long-held discussion of privileged celebrity life.

“For me, being an actor, maraming perks, ‘di ba? Being an actor is so much fun, and I love my craft so much. But being an actor, being a celebrity, once na lumabas ka ng gate mo, you’re already working. Sometimes you need to pretend that you’re okay kahit na bad trip ka or may problema ka sa buhay—hindi mo pwedeng ipakita sa tao na you’re not okay. Sometimes ‘yung first impression nila sa’yo ang tatatak sa kanila, kahit hindi nila alam na may pinagdadaanan ka sa buhay. So, ayun lang ang mahirap,” he says. “And dahil sa generation ngayon sa social media and technology na nakikita na ng lahat ang ginagawa namin.”

Before you assume this is another entry to the stacked up woe-is-me narrative of the famed few, Ruru Madrid is the first to understand this culture of putting people and personalities on towering pedestals.

Better Now

Now more than ever, truth is a currency being peddled in the commerce of life. Meaning, more people are ditching the fear honesty and coming clean with their innermost thoughts and feelings. Sure, it is threatened on the daily, but with the message persisting across to infinite receptions, progress inches at every opportunity. Take Ruru Madrid for example, a fine fellow with a horizon of possibilities at his grasp, and yet what it is worth, he has been crippled by self-doubt, anxiety, and even bouts of depression.

Dumaan ako sa point na parang muntikan na ako sumuko. Nagkaroon ako ng isang show, Encantadia…Na-bash talaga ako: ‘hindi bagay ‘yan sa’yo,’ ‘wala kang kwenta.’ ‘Yung iba pa sinasabi: ‘pag nakita kita, sasapakin kita. It really got to me, because I am really sensitive when it comes to those things,” he recalls. “And then I realized, bakit ako magpapaka-apekto sa kanila? Bakit ko hahayaan na malungkot because of them? Bakit ‘di ko patunayan na deserving ako of this role? And then yeah, I worked hard for it: I worked out, I trained hard, and I did workshops. Eventually, I won an award for the role. So, ayun siguro ‘yung tumatak sa akin na hindi ka nila pagmamay-ari. Sarili mo pa rin ‘yan, and at the end of the day, ikaw lang ang tutulong sa sarili mo para makaahon ka.”

Yes, these are the stories we like hearing: self-aware introspections marred with enough bumps to force one out of contention. But even before you count the hero out, they make one last Hail Mary move at the clutch point, and eventually pull through even with just a miniscule glimmer of light at the end. Surviving drawn out episodes like this doesn’t necessarily assure a smooth sail from here on out. In fact, the succeeding stretch can prove to be even more challenging, and yet we endure, as humans are known to, especially when push comes to shove.

To The Great Distance Ahead

Without missing a beat, he continues in what begins to be a revealing monologue befitting of the day’s activities. “Actually, ‘yung self-love, natutunan ko lang siya this year na. ‘Yun ‘yung New Year’s resolution ko actually, na this year, mas mamahalin ko sarili ko. Of course, masarap mag-work, masarap kumita, pero kailangan mo muna isipin ‘yung sarili mo, lalo na ang health mo,” he shares. “Kailangan mong isipin na mas kailangan natin ‘yung katawan natin kaysa sa mas kailangan tayo ng katawan natin—and it’s not just physical, but also mental. We need to also think about what will make our minds at ease and at peace.”

Aware that this is still easier said than done, Ruru Madrid doesn’t consider an end all and be all, but rather a work in progress constantly evolving along life’s every swoop, swell, and sharp turn. What’s important is that he is at least on his way to a clearing in the path he is treading.

“Right now, I realized that you cannot fully love anyone if you don’t love and put yourself first. I’m at that stage now, and it’s a bit sad that I just realized it now, but better late than never, right?”

At the risk of this sounding like a somber end to what was actually a rather a reflective revealing telling ensconced with the nuance of modern life and all its perils, we argue that this is but the beginning of a more lucid and precise point-of-view that we assure will serve him well. “Sh*t happens,” we repeat, as if only to lift the veil of melancholia that draped and to remind him that right as this may seem, it never is too late to walk up from the murky waters. Consider this that shocking draw of breath you take before rescinding to a recovery of gasps. Everything else is dirt under a shoe, a film of excess you can scrape and shake off to what is at least to your standards, clean and clear before eventually moving even at least a few steps forward into the great distance ahead.

In And Out Of The Philippines, Sandara Park Proves Why She Is Pinoy At Heart

line
Sandara Park tweeting in Tagalog will always hit different.

While she is pure Korean and a K-pop phenomenon, Sandara Park never fails to make it known that when it comes down to it, the Philippines will always be special to her.

When Sandara Park first came into the collective consciousness of the public in the Philippines during her audition for Star Circle Quest, one of the early contentions was if she was willing to practice speaking in Tagalog. The reason was simple: It will prove to be more challenging in her quest for enduring stardom in the Philippine show business if she was limited to only English and Korean. Not that there is anything wrong with knowing only just that, it’s just that there would be more opportunities locally, and most importantly, the fans would not only be able to understand her more, but relate to her as well. “I promise that this moment, I will try to speak Tagalog…every time,” she guaranteed.

By this point, Sandara Park had already been living and studying in the Philippines for quite some time and has considered herself a Pinoy at heart. (Remember the funny quip of her explaining what the abbreviation of her barkada name PPG stood for?) Picking up the language well enough, even more so coming into the auditions, she would eventually go on to make a good impression on the judges of the reality talent search competition beyond her initial mission of looking like her idol, Regine Velasquez and shooting her own music video, to the tune of Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw, no less.

The rest, as they say, is history. Proving herself worthy as one of the top talents of Star Circle Quest, we all know what happens here, Sandara Park left an indelible imprint on the entertainment industry and Filipino pop culture as well. Who could forget her working through her jitters and tears, uttering the now famous phrase: “Mahal ko kayo”—waving hand and all?

Pinoy At Heart

After her time in Philippine show business, stacking up TV series and films of her speaking in fluent Tagalog, the self-confessed pambansang krung-krung would pack up her life and risk the fame she built here for a chance to pursue even bigger dreams in the mecca of entertainment in Asia, South Korea.

Proving to be a good, nay, great decision, Sandara Park trained and eventually debuted as a quarter of the super girl group, 2NE1, who despite disbanding years back, still maintains an indomitable stronghold on K-pop to this very day. But despite amassing a phenomenal superstar status, Sandara Park stood true to her being Pinoy at heart, never once forgetting her time in the Philippines. In fact, every chance possible, she will insert a bit of Filipino in, just like she did in the 2NE1 track, Let’s Go Party where she said, “Punta tayo sa fiesta!”

Whether it’s speaking in Tagalog, talking fondly about the Philippines, or visiting the place she once called home every now and then, Sandara Park will always find time to champion anything and everything Filipino. Vlogs? Check. Song covers? Check. Jollibee and Red Horse? Check. Heck, she could very well be an ambassador of the country to Korea and the rest of the world for all the times she would join fellow K-pop acts (2NE1, Seungri, G-Dragon) back in a pre-pandemic life. Now that’s whole-hearted dedication and to think, she is pure blooded Korean. How do the kids say it these days? Sana all.

No Tears, Pure Love

It is no secret that Sandara Park loves the Philippines, so much so that it can be said that she left a part of her heart here. (“Galing pa ako sa Pilipinas,” she once said on a variety show.) But despite charting global success as a Korean entertainer on the verge of her proper solo debut and possibly more projects, Sandara Park will switch to her Pinoy at heart self effortlessly with something random but true to her irresistible charm and candor.

While she initially persisted at the language beyond the truncated Tagalog and English, Sandara Park steeled her resolve to learn and live it to be relevant and respectful of the audience and country she loves so dearly. Sharing a common insecurity with some Filipinos on the accent while speaking English, Sandara Park revealed in an interview on MBC Every 1’s Video Star that she was embarrassed by it at first. “The Philippines’ English has a unique accent,” she shared. But since realizing it is an affectation that connects her even more to the country, she began to appreciate it. “Many people told me it was cool and matches me well,” she said. “I became more confident thanks to them.”

Now, she would slip in and out of Filipino, the most recent being at the 2021 Asia Song Festival where fans were quick to notice that she possibly said “po” and even noted that it was as if she was hosting a segment in the beloved noontime Sunday concert show, ASAP. She was already an honorary Filipino then but the nudge in Star Circle Quest really proved why she was, still is, and will forever be Pinoy at heart. Now, allow us to return the favor and wave back, “Mahal ka namin, Sandara Park.” No tears, just pure love.

This Filipino Queer Artist Puts His Own Whimsical Spin On Pop Culture Portraits

line
Imagine the halo halo portrait IRL. A VIBE.

If painter Henry Matisse and sculptor (and drag queen!) Juno Birch had a baby, it would be Filipino artist Xandro Miguel.

One look at Xandro Miguel’s art and he immediately captures you with the vibrant colors and dreamy compositions of his illustrations. He’s an artist who doesn’t take himself too seriously and most of his paintings (both traditional and digital) show this kind of tongue-in-cheek humor that doesn’t come off as pretentious or corny. A queer artist who’s inspired by the works of French painter Henry Matisse and Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama, Xandro has always had an affinity for iconic art pieces. Exploring and establishing his own style, the muses in his paintings often have larger than life, Stepford wife-esque hair in the brightest colors and droopy eyes, but lined with a thin stroke of mascara.

From his take on The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli, to putting a Filipino spin on all his artworks like the halo halo portrait inspired by Dita Von Teese, we talk to the twenty-something artist on how he got started and found his aesthetic as an artist.

How long have you been illustrating?

I decided to start painting last year, since I had nothing else to do. After releasing my second painting collection, I started illustrating digitally.

Tell us the story about how your aesthetic and point-of-view came to be. We love the dreamy, almost psychedelic vibe of your artworks.

Knowing that we are all different in our own way, I wanted my art to be reflect how I see myself—weird and uniquely different. At first, I decided to create my works by closing my eyes and letting my intuition decide what painting I’d create, until my hands got used to it. I believe that my art is unapologetically free. I enjoy the freedom of creating my art without letting anyone’s opinions get to me, and instead, trusting myself to attain a certain outcome and just embrace it. In addition to this, I have been making my own rendition of existing works by the artists that I look up to, such as Hajime Sorayama and Henri Matisse.

Who are the artists you wish to collaborate with in the future?

It will mean the world to me if I got the chance to collaborate with Hajime Sorayama and my good friend, Anna Bautista.

If you’d have a chance, what would you say to your younger self?

Xandro, you are a butterfly; a butterfly emerging from its cocoon. It is a process; but once you recognize your true self, you can spread your wings and fly. Just keep creating art, believe in yourself and in your talent. Never compare yourself and your work to others as you are uniquely different. You are special. Follow your dreams even if people put you down. Just keep on flying.

Do you have a message to Filipino queer artists?

Always remember that art isn’t a competition; we should just appreciate each other’s art. I know that in this kind of industry, everyone will always have their own opinions, but don’t let those bring you down. I believe that art is subjective, and all that matters is the artist’s opinion of his/her/their works.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would know that Squid Game is currently the hottest show in the world right now. The thrilling K-series has hooked tens of millions of viewers around the world to the point that it has become the most popular show in Netflix history. (The show is even estimated to be worth around $900 million.) Given the popularity of Squid Game, it’s no surprise then many people across the globe are recreating the show’s games. Here are just a few notable events of when you could possibly participate in the show in real life. Do you think you are cut out for it?

A GIANT STATUE OF THE SQUID GAME DOLL IN MANILA

When Squid Game first premiered in mid-September, social media was filled with posts of a 10-foot tall statue of the Squid Game girl doll in Ortigas. The doll in question was a promotional stunt for the show and was placed along an entrance in Robinsons Galleria to eye jaywalkers. That didn’t stop avid fans of the show from showing up and recreating Red Light, Green Light in real life—without the murder, of course.

ITAEWON STATION GETS A SQUID GAME MAKEOVER

Squid Game Pop-Up At Itaewon Will Stop You In Your Tracks Like Playing A Game of Red Light, Green Light

At the same time the 10-foot doll was in Ortigas, Itaewon station in Seoul got a whole makeover to look like the sets of the show. The entire interior matched the design of Squid Game, including the playground from the dalgona challenge episode, pink stairs, the doll, and even the golden piggy bank. Staff were on-site dressed in the signature red suits and face masks that were worn in the show. Fans and passersby could get a first-hand look at how the show would look in real life. Even some of the cast members visited the pop-up.

But that wasn’t the only real-life Squid Game-related event to happen in South Korea. According to local reports, the St. John’s Hotel in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, was hosting its own Squid Game event. Anyone could apply to join with registration costing 10,000 won (around 430 pesos). Participants would receive a mysterious business card with a phone number and be directed to a pine forest near the hotel to compete.

Red Light, Green Light, tug of war, ddakji (paper tile flipping), and the dalgona challenge were all going to be played. The winner will receive five million won (around 215,870 pesos) and the identity of the host of the game would have been revealed at the end. The event was scheduled to take place on October 24 but it was canceled by the local police for violating local COVID safety protocols. If anything, the hotel did try to bring the show to life.

It’s not just Asia that has been obsessed with Squid Game. Even in Europe, Squid Game fever has hit the streets. In a recently held event at Maastricht in the Netherlands, Netflix Netherlands set up a real-life version of Red Light, Green Light, locally known as Annemaria Koekoek. A life-sized version of the doll was present and staff members were dressed in red suits to look like the staff on the island. Same as the show, competitors would start at a designated spot and move and stop. Staff would go up to each player to see if they moved. If they did, they would be removed. While the doll and the staff might seem creepy at first, it is honestly something we wouldn’t mind trying out.

REAL LIFE SQUID GAME IN ABU DHABI

Speaking of successful real-life Squid Game recreations, the United Arab Emirates recently held their own event. The Korean Cultural Center in Abu Dhabi hosted the event called KCC Squid Game Event at their offices. Over 300 people applied for it, but only two groups of 15 people are approved to participate. True to the show, the participants were dressed in the same green tracksuits as the characters. Of course, the real guns were substituted for sponge guns. Four games were played: Red Light, Green Light, marbles, dalgona challenge, and ddakji. There was no prize money involved for winning though. The event was a way for the center to encourage people to learn about Korean culture.

MRBEAST TAKES ON SQUID GAME

Top YouTuber MrBeast is known for his crazy challenges and giving away big cash prizes and other rewards. Given the premise and set-up of Squid Game, it actually fits the content of MrBeast. So much so, the creator recently announced that he’s working on a real-life version of Squid Game. He posted a TikTok which said that if it surpassed 10 million likes, he would recreate Squid Game in real life. As expected, it easily surpassed that. MrBeast is currently in the process of recruiting 456 random people to participate and making all the sets. We can’t wait to see what MrBeast pulls out, given how he goes all out in some of his videos.

SQUID GAME IN CAUSEWAY BAY?

If you’ve ever been to Hong Kong, then you’d know that Causeway Bay is a top destination. But would you be open to playing Red Light, Green Light there as well? That is what photographer and digital creator surrealhk imagined in his work. The image showed a building-sized version of the Squid Game doll in the busy district with onlookers taking photos. As convincing as it looks, the photo is edited as surrealkh is known for editing his pictures with otherworldly imagery. But TBH, we’re curious to see how that would look like in real life.

With Squid Game and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha making waves around the world, K-Dramas are currently one of the hottest forms of entertainment right now. Not that it ever waned in popularity, but with Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha just recently ending and no official announcement yet of Squid Game season two, you may be running low on new K-Dramas to watch. This is why iQiyi’s newest original K-series, Jirisan, is looking to be the next must-see show, especially with its compelling plot, talent in front and behind the camera, and its unique premise.

JIRISAN, PARK RANGERS MEETS MYSTERY THRILLER

Jirisan centers on Seo Yi-gang (Gianna Jun), the Jirisan National Park’s top ranger who has vast experience in navigation, making her knowledgeable when it comes to tracking down lost individuals. One day, she becomes the partner of Kang Hyun-jo (Ju Ji-hoon), a rookie park ranger who is a military academy graduate and an ex-lieutenant. After experiencing a horrific incident on Jirisan, it pushed Hyun-jo to become a ranger. The main plot of the drama will center on the mystery surrounding the mountain’s many visitors; those who come to kill, and those who come to end their lives. Aside from this, Jirisan will also give time to highlight the evolving dynamic between Yi-gang and Hyun-jo as well as the struggles and challenges mountain park rangers go through in their jobs.

Jirisan stars seasoned actress Gianna Jun. While she does have experience with action roles such as Ashin in Kingdom, for the most part, she is known for her romantic comedies like My Love from the Star and The Legend of the Blue Sea. In Jirisan, Jun will be for the first time fronting a series that will show a new side of strength and skill to her. She revealed that showcasing a stronger side to her wasn’t the intention of joining the project. “Actually, I didn’t accept the role because I wished to play a strong woman, females today are stronger in character. I never thought I would play a park ranger, to me this is a brand new experience.”

When it came to filming, Gianna Jun felt that the shooting process was not that bad. “I didn’t feel exceptionally tired or cold, I was very happy throughout the filming process.  As I prepared well in mountaineering gear, there were not many difficulties.” In fact, Jun feels that the production process has improved her physical health.

Joining Gianna Jun as the co-lead in Jirisan is Ju Ji-hoon. While his newbie park ranger character may seem one-dimensional or you may guess where his character is going, Ju expressed that his character will actually bring the element of mystery into the series and that he’s not as one-sided as people may initially see him as. Unlike Jun though, Ju shared that it took a lot of energy to shoot this series. It was tough, especially when ascending the peak and his legs had to hold still. “The shoot was about three to four times more demanding than shooting on even ground,” he quipped.

A COMPELLING STORY THAT CAN BE TENSE AND HEARTWARMING

Aside from the mystery and suspense unfolding in the mountain and the dangers like typhoons, fires, floods, and rescue missions, Jirisan will also show the two leads in a senior-junior relationship. Spending long hours together on-set led helped the both of them to develop their relationship. Speaking of the time together and chemistry in their first-ever collaboration, Jun said, “It was a very good partnership, we were at ease.” He joked, “I’ve been a fan of Gianna Jun ‘since young.’ Her charm has left me speechless and has always been a role model for me. In our collaboration, she was always trying to feed me, so I am very thankful to her.”

Jirisan can and will get dark. But the cast and crew wanted viewers to know that the show will also feature heartwarming stories and even light humor and banter between the park rangers. Co-star Cho Han-cheul has played comedic and scene-stealing roles in many shows. In Jirisan, not only is he teammates with Jun and Ju as the Haidong Branch park rangers, but he will also be a source of humor to lighten up the mood every now and then. The moments of hilarity and bickering among the trio in the series are not to be missed.

A-TIER TALENT BEHIND THE CAMERA

While the cast involved is already worth the price of admission, the talent behind the camera is just as impressive. The series is directed by Lee Eung-bok, who’s directed hit shows like Descendants of the Sun, Goblin, Mr. Sunshine, and Sweet Home. The script was written by Kim Eun-hee who penned Kingdom. The production company, AStory, was the same company that produced season one of Kingdom. And to top it all off, BTS’s Jin will be featured in the OST as he is singing the main theme song.

Kim said that the series would take a close look at the day-to-day lives of park rangers and what they do, something that isn’t normally portrayed in popular media. And the cast had nothing but praise for Kim. Jun said, “Few actors have worked with writer Kim consecutively. I am very thankful for that. The charm in her scripts is that details that seem unimportant at the start. But it turns out to be crucial at the end.” Ju added, “I’ve worked with writer Kim for five years. She’s like a relative, someone who I will greet during a festival, and we meet often. Her scripts are extremely detailed.”

Jirisan will stream exclusively on iQiyi starting October 23. The first episode is hitting the streaming service on October 23, Saturday, 8 PM, PH time. New episodes of the 16-episode series will come every Saturday and Sunday.

TikTok Philippines Partners With Comelec To Combat Misinformation In Halalan 2022

Fighting fake news one platform at a time.

In the upcoming Philippine election season, Comelec and TikTok will use the platform to share responsible, accurate, and credible information.

As we lead-up to the 2022 elections following the declaration and filing of candidacy for many government positions, including the hotly contested presidency, the threat of election misinformation and disinformation is real. Especially in this day and age, it is easy to spread misinformation and fake news online that can affect the opinion of many people. Since we are in a middle of a pandemic, more candidates will be turning online campaigning in lieu of in-person events which makes stopping election misinformation more important.

This is why Comelec recently entered into a partnership with TikTok Philippines to make this upcoming election season safer online. The popular video-sharing app will be used as a tool to help promote voter registration, which ends on October 30, as well as is a place for credible information during election season.

FIGHTING VOTER MISINFORMATION ON TIKTOK

Why is TikTok so popular?

“Venturing into emerging platforms and tapping into their vast network of users has been our long-standing advocacy, as it allows the Commission on Elections to broaden the reach of its voter education and information drive. Through this partnership with TikTok for the 2022 National and Local Elections, we forge a valuable cooperation that will buttress our goal of conducting clean, honest, and credible elections,” said James Jimenez during the virtual launch of the partnership.

TikTok’s head of public policy, Kristoffer Rada, said that the partnership “opens up new and innovative ways to share and consume accurate information about the coming elections for the Filipino public. We are committed to providing credible, fact-based content to help Filipino voters make informed choices during the election period.”

WHAT TO EXPECT

600K deactivated voters register again for 2022 polls: Comelec | Philippine News Agency

Comelec already launched their official and verified TikTok account, which will serve as a place for credible election-related information and encourage voter registration and participation. Expect to see events and videos in the lead-up and during election day about relevant election data, up-to-date voting results, and the like. Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez also has his own official and verified TikTok account where he posts about the election and voting-related information.

TikTok Philippines also said that its community guidelines are made in such a way so that users can responsibly and safely participate in the 2022 elections. It also is committed to fighting misinformation, making it easy to report such activities, and holding the irresponsible accountable. The platform is making sure that people and content who post misleading information will be restricted and removed from the platform.

The TikTok Ban Should Worry Every Company

Given how popular TikTok is in the country, especially amongst Gen Z, this partnership will be a way to help users get the real facts from credible sources amid the persistent threat of being dissuaded by fake news and disinformation. Proving timely, this is also necessary since it is relatively easy to pass off content as gospel on TikTok, and truth be told, it has begun even way before election season. Making fair use of the platform can be a way to reach out to people who may not watch TV or read the news to educate them on elections. This partnership could also lead the way for personalities and influencers on the platform to responsibly encourage their followers to participate in the elections.

James Jimenez actually asked Filipino TikTok users and creators to help with their voter registration campaign back in 2020. He quote tweeted a news story about TikTok creators in the US who were launching a voter registration drive for the 2020 US Presidential elections. So Comelec’s partnership with TikTok Philippines is a much welcome initiative.
