The best thing about memes and viral videos is that they can come from the unlikeliest of places. Memes aren’t things that you anticipate, they just happen when they happen. And that was what unraveled on Monday, August 16, when a clip of Karen Davila and Lyca Gairanod went viral on social media.

In a video posted on her YouTube channel, Karen Davila interviewed The Voice Kids Philippines season one champion Lyca Gairanod in her hometown of Tanza, Cavite. Among other things, Lyca said that she sold the house that she won on the show so that she could live nearer to her grandmother. But what caught everyone’s attention was when Karen asked Lyca when her birthday was and she said November 21, which happens to be the same birthday as Karen. This caused Karen to react with extreme shock, catching Lyca off-guard and making her take a step back.

The clip quickly went viral with people finding how hilarious both Karen and Lyca’s reactions were. And of course, when something goes viral, the memes soon followed. So, here is a compilation of the funniest and most hilarious memes we found on the internet.

Despite their physical disabilities, these Filipino athletes have excelled in their respective sports and are now set to represent the country at the Tokyo Paralympic Games.

Following the history-making success of Team Philippines at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, it is now time for a new batch of Filipino athletes to shine in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Paralympics. The Paralympic Games are held after the regular Olympics, which sees disabled athletes from around the world compete in feats of athletic prowess. Already overcoming a lot in their lives, these athletes deserve the same, if not more attention because, despite what they have been through, they still manage to excel and inspire.

The 2020 Paralympic Games will be held from August 24, 2021, to September 5, 2021, with over 170 nations participating, a record for the event. The country is sending six athletes to the games and is looking to add to the country’s current two medal haul, the biggest prize of which is the country’s first-ever gold medal at the Paralympic Games. Here are the six athletes representing Team Philippines.

ALLAIN GANAPIN

ALLAIN GANAPIN

Taekwondo is making its debut for the first time at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Allain Ganapin will be the first Filipino taekwondo para-athlete to play in the medal event. Allain had his right arm up to his elbow amputated at birth as part of a life-saving surgery. The 23-year old is set to participate in the men’s K44-75kg division. According to the International Olympic Committee, the K classification stands for “unilateral arm amputation (or equivalent loss of function), or loss of toes which impact the ability to lift the heel properly.” Allain also took home the bronze medal in the Asian Taekwondo Paralympic Qualification Tournament in Amman, Jordan.

JEANETTE ACEVEDA

Jeanette Aceveda got her spot at the Tokyo Paralympic Games via the Bipartite Commission Invitation. This is given to athletes who aren’t able to attend qualifying tournaments for extraordinary circumstances. She is set to participate in the field of athletics under the women’s F11/F12 discus throw. This will be Jeanette’s first time to play at the Paralympics.

Gary Bejino started swimming when he was in high school and that soon turned into a medal-winning swimming career. At the 2013 Asian Youth Para Games in Malaysia, he won a silver in the 100-meter freestyle event. At the 2018 Asian Para Games, he bagged a silver in the 200-meter individual medley, a bronze in the 100-meter backstroke, and another bronze medal in the 100-meter freestyle. The 23-year-old will be making his Paralympic Games debut in Tokyo as one of the country’s two swimmers. He will be competing in the men’s S6 200-meter individual medley, 400-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke, and 50-meter butterfly. S6 is classified as “short stature or amputations or moderate co-ordination problems on one side of their body.”

Despite lacking both legs and having an underdeveloped left limb, Erwin Gawilan has made a name for himself as a history-making para-swimmer. At the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, he became the first Filipino to win a gold medal at the games when he won the men’s 200-meter individual medley. To date, he has 7 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and one bronze from the ASEAN Para Games. He also has 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 3 bronze from the Asian Para Games. He previously competed at the 2016 Paralympic Games in the 400m freestyle S6 event. This time, he is set to compete in the 400-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle, and 100-meter backstroke events.

JERROLD MANGLIWAN

JERROLD MANGLIWAN

Jerrold Mangliwan has paraplegia, which means he suffers from paralysis in the lower half of his body. He took up wheelchair racing in 2009 after it was suggested to him by a friend. He is set to make his second straight appearance at the Paralympic Games after Rio 2016 where he competed in the 400 meter T52 wheelchair race. The 41-year-old also won a gold in the T52 200M and 100m race, and silver in the T52 400m race at the 2015 ASEAN Para Games. He is set to participate in the T52 100m and 400m races.

ACHELLE GUION

ACHELLE GUION

Achelle Guion suffered from polio when she was just 1-year-old. But that hasn’t stopped her from succeeding in sports as she is set to represent the country in powerlifting. The 49-year-old is the sixth and last Filipino athlete to qualify for the Tokyo Paralympics. She will compete in the 44 kg weightlifting category, hoping to emulate the gold-medal winning success of Hidilyn Diaz. She previously represented the country at the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games where she placed sixth in the same event. Achelle is currently ranked 17th overall in her weight class.

It was a slayage of looks for their first MV in this era, not to mention the empowering feeling after watching, whether you’re a fan or not. There was no shortage of mind-blowing visuals, an amazing storyline, and definitely, Red Velvet winning the fashion department with countless outfits for each of the girls.

We’re still not over this baddie look by Yeri on the Queendom music video. Sure, the Juicy Couture tie-dye top is cute, but the gold buckle belt from Chanel takes the cake. The price though? It’s a tag that had a jaw-dropping value of $900. Considering that Chanel’s already a luxury brand, Yeri made it look more expensive when she wore it on Queendom. NGL, the buckle belt can already buy you at least 9 good pairs of red velvet boots from Dr. Martens. Not that you need that much, but that’s how Yeri’s belt costs when you scale it down. How?!

The Queen will always be the most powerful piece in a chess set, you know, as proven by many masters since time immemorial and yes, even K-pop girl group Red Velvet. Making their long-awaited comeback, they didn’t just drop an album, but the first MV from this new era of royalty, too. Queendom fully seals Red Velvet’s name in the K-Pop world as it’s already breaking the charts as we speak. Hooking us from their Psycho era, now return to the scene as the queens that they are. From visuals, to beauty looks, and of course, fashion, here’s why Red Velvet’s been killing their comeback.

When fans asked for looks, Seulgi delivered. The main dancer and lead vocalist of Red Velvet really said, “ask and you shall receive!” On the Queendom MV, she blessed us with this edgy-meets-royalty look. In a crystal stitched corset by New York’s newest fashion cult favorite, AREA NYC, Seulgi made us want to bow down on our knees. The corse,t which is sold on the brand’s website costs $780 or about P39,496.86. WTF?! That’s enough to buy at least 7 red velvet tracksuits from Juicy Couture, which costs at least $100 each. Well, it’s not easy being a queen and Seulgi proves it.

Proving that queens are truly dominant, the album and first MV for their comeback was the perfect choice. And of course, it came with a pretty hefty price tag. From the visuals, the beauty looks, and the fashion—Red Velvet left no crumbs, literally.

Obviously not afraid to stand out and shine, Red Velvet’s Joy rapped her way in the Queendom MV in a Prada rhinestone mesh top, no less. The price? A whopping $1970 or around P99,754.89. That’s enough to buy 103 red velvet lipsticks IRL. A swipe of red from MAC Cosmetics alone is $19, so when you add it up, the price you pay for Joy’s Prada mesh top is the price you pay for at least 103 red velvet lipsticks all in all. (From Psycho to being queens, real quick!) Letting us into this brand new royal era, their first MV was definitely a visual treat both musically, the show-stopping beauty looks and of course, the fashion. Bring out the Gucci, the Prada, the Vivienne Westwood, and the Saint Laurent for the queens!

We know, Wendy’s always had expensive tastes. Call us crazy, but that’s enough to buy 963 boxes of red velvet cupcakes IRL. A cupcake costs about $3 individually, so multiply that by 963 orders, and that’s the combined price tag of Wendy’s Gucci wool cape on Queendom’s MV. Welp, Red Velvet’s main vocalist is pretty sweet and spicy after all.

With references to Beyoncé, Mr. Suave, and Wes Anderson, James Reid hits all the right notes in the isolation-anchored music video of his latest release, Hello.

Remember when the Beyoncé, acknowledged that the Super Selfie series of Gab Valenciano was an inspiration for her music video, 7/11? As if being knighted into the league of extraordinary that has caught the eye of the queen of queens, the ultimate validation gets an extension of expression in the music video of James Reid, which Valenciano himself directed and edited. Just like with Beyoncé, we get a rare look into the humor of James Reid in Hello, which is a side to him that not many are privy to.

With heaps of silliness, quirks, and cuts, the smooth and saucy funk-pop track is a decided departure from his signature brooding visual expositions, which are typically serious and yes, smart. “Having spent a lot of my time by myself during the quarantine, I’ve learned to dive into the depths of PERSONAL INTROSPECTION. It’s truly beautiful knowing and experiencing TRUE GROWTH—a growth that’s only birthed within,” writes James Reid on the description of the Hello music video. “Our minds are infinite in so many ways, and learning how to tap into that is ULTIMATE FREEDOM. I’ve learned how to translate that to my everyday actions and now I’m 100% always driven to achieve MY GOALS so that the universe can be a BETTER PLACE.”

This liberty is realized in the easy to listen single, which is positioned as the final piece of the puzzle in his re-emergence into the music scene. Sparkling fresh, warm, and a whole mood in a song, Hello by James Reid perfectly encapsulates this fragment of his life as he reconnects on the outside, as well as of course, on the inside.

Party For One More?

“This song portrays that eagerness to make connections, to personally say hello again,” says James Reid in a statement. And if the lyrics and the rhythm already got you hooked into this cool, calm, and collected state of mind, then the music video ups the ante with charm and candor.

Like a languid drawl of the words “hello” in the blur of time stretched beyond recognition, the energy of the song, as well as of the flipside of James Reid that was realized in a Wes Anderson meets Bruno Mars vibe is pure joy in motion. Dressed in a slew of retro-inspired fashion, the waves of his hair tumbling ever so effortlessly at every flick of his face, and of course, that seemingly out-of-place moustache (hello, Mr. Suave), all the considered pomp in the visual cues made perfect sense to diffuse the sensual-skewing poetry of the song.

We’ve seen this in doses in past eras of James Reid, but in Hello, the dance and comedy laced into the storytelling and characterization is genuine and in good spirits. There is a lot of nostalgia that courses through in the music video, but it isn’t all sepia-tones, because when the track picks up in the tempered drops of beats and bass, we are immediately whisked away to a neon-lit 80s fantasy that makes you want to get up, laugh a little, and dance—that is if you haven’t already.

Clearly, he is having fun even in apparent isolation. Apparently, all you need are music, lights, and a bit of crazy, and then you’re good to go. Hello, we want to co-sign on this party for one, James Reid.

Letting us into the kaleidoscopic world of Hello, James Reid pulls off 15 outfits for his newest MV.

James Reid’s funky new sound didn’t just end with fresh synth beats—it also came alive with crazy visuals and yes, 15 outfits. The Hello singer and CEO of Careless Music has also been known to be one of the notable style icons in the local scene. From being decked in streetwear during his Palm Dreams era to evolving into bohemian fashion, James Reid’s style evolution has been quite the ride.

Accompanying the new carefree sound reminiscent of the 80s, stylist Gee Jocson was able to curate 15 looks that represented the many facets of James, and shared some easter eggs you might have missed, too.
