If you grew up watching an endless amount of cartoons in the late 90s to early 2000s, chances are you know who Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup are. If not, well, here’s an education. Airing from 1998-2004, The Powerpuff Girls was a staple of Cartoon Network that attracted not only young kids, but teenagers as well with the show’s action, comedy, and surprisingly deep themes.

The series has remained a beloved staple in the selection of early 2000s children cartoons and now, there is a new series on the way, this time in live-action and set in modern times. The CW has just released the first official image for their series entitled, Powerpuff.

Modern Sense Of Style

The new series sees a grownup Powerpuff Girls in the modern world dealing with more realistic problems closer to their age group. Because of that, the first look image shows the girls in a more up-to-date, casual, and modern aesthetic. Bubbles (Dove Cameron) is wearing jeans, a blue sleeveless top, and what looks like blue glittery eyeshadow. Blossom (Chloe Bennet) is pictured in jeans with what looks to be a dark magenta jacket and t-shirt, as well as of a gold necklace and hoop earrings to match. Buttercup (Yana Perrault), meanwhile, is sporting a short haircut, jeans, a green jacket, and a dark green t-shirt.

The Powerpuff Girls as Adults

Powerpuff will follow Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as adults in their 20s who view their childhood years with resentment due to all the lost time they spent fighting crime instead of being kids. The girls will now have to discover whether they have it in them to reunite and fight a new evil terrorizing the world.

Each of the three girls will also be facing their own problems and demons as well. Blossom was the star performer who strived to be the perfect child and even has several advanced degrees to her name, but her time fighting crime has left her with trauma, anxiety, and being a recluse. She now needs to find it in her again to become a leader and one where she isn’t forced into it.

Bubbles was seen as the sweet and lovable girl of the group when they were kids. As a young adult, she still has the charisma, but deep down she has built a toughness and wit over the years. She approaches reuniting as a group as a way to regain her lost stardom, but her motives may change for the better.

Buttercup was known as the tougher and more rebellious member of the group. Despite the toughness she shows on the outside, she is also hiding a more sensitive side of herself on the inside. As a young adult, she is trying to forget her crime-fighting past and tries to live a low-key life.

Powerpuff will also see Donald Faison play the girls’ father, Professor Utonium, as he is going through a mid-life crisis and tries to reconnect with the girls. Nicholas Podany will play the show’s version of the series’ staple villain Mojo Jojo who will go by the name Joseph “Jojo” Mondel Jr. while Robyn Lively will play Sara Bellum.

Questionable Outfits

What the girls would be wearing for Powerpuff became a point of contention last week as photos of the three main cast members on set were published and let’s just say that the response was not that positive. The three girls were wearing the classic costumes but they looked out-of-place and more like a Halloween costume. The internet had a lot of say about the set photos

Luckily, it has been reported that the classic costumes were only for a flashback scene to their earlier years for the pilot episode of Powerpuff. The rest of the pilot will see the girls as adults with a modern sense of style and that was backed up by the first look image.
