2021 has been a great year for K-dramas with shows like Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Squid Games, Vincenzo, and Hellbound being consumed by audiences around the world. And December 2021 looks to be no exception. The last year of the month is promising to deliver some heavyweight K-dramas that are poised to become must-see content. One show that has caught our eye is Bad and Crazy, iQiyi’s latest Original Korean drama series. The show is aiming to be the streaming service’s year-end showstopper and considering how iQiyi has yet to disappoint, Bad and Crazy has our attention.

Bad and Crazy is a drama that follows capable but bad cop Ryu Su Yeol (Lee Dong Wook) regaining his humanity after meeting the righteous but crazy K (Wi Ha Joon). While the two originally have a rocky relationship, they need to unite and put their differences aside in order to get their revenge on someone who wronged them on a personal level. Along the way, they also work with a colorful cast of characters such as hot-blooded narcotics police officer Lee Hui Gyeom (Han Ji Eun) and junior police officer O Gyeong Tae (Cha Hak Yeon). From what we’ve seen and heard about Bad and Crazy, the show is reaching the upper echelon of our binge-watch list. Here’s why the show might just be your next must-see K-Drama.

IT FEATURES AN ALL-STAR CAST

Some of the best K-dramas are the ones with amazing casts and Bad and Crazy is looking to deliver just that. Lee Dong Wook has been in some of our favorite shows from Tale of the Nine Tailed, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, and Goblin. Wi Ha Joon, meanwhile, has seen his star risen significantly since his scene stealing role in Squid Game as well as other dramas like 18 Again and Romance Is A Bonus Book. The participation of either actor alone could have already gotten us excited. But the fact that they are teaming up together for the first time, sign us up.

The supporting cast includes other talented actors like Han Ji Eun who you may know from Be Melodramatic and My Roommate Is a Gumiho and Cha Hak Yeon whose past work includes Mine and Children of Nobody. So it’s a stacked cast.

A COLLECTION OF INTERESTING CHARACTERS

The talent in-front of the camera is matched by the characters they are going to play. Lee’s Ryu Su Yeol is a consequentialist police inspector looking to get ahead in life. He wants to do what is right but his morals can get mixed up. Wi’s K is crazy yet righteous who is not afraid to uphold justice in a corrupt world using any means. He’s the tough guy who is a bit naïve and more than open to get his hands dirty to get the job done. As the wildcard of the cast, you can’t be for certain what he does next. But K also has his comical aspects to him and Wi Ha Joon has said that he tired to be funny on set to keep in character.

Han’s Lee Hui Gyeom is a no-nonsense police officer who doesn’t back down from a fight. If you’ve watched some of Han Ji Eun’s dramas before, then you know that she is more known for her sweet and lovely characters. So, her role in Bad and Crazy is an exciting departure for the actress and this transformation included the fact that she changed her hair for the show.

As for Cha’s O Gyeong Tae, think of him as the moralistic center of the show. He is a down to earth and pure guy. But also someone who is persevering and will get to the bottom of things in investigations. In a seedy and morally gray world, he is the idealistic go-getter. The role served as Cha Hak Yeon’s first work since leaving the military and he revealed that he had to cut his hair after growing it longer for quite some time for the show, something he admitted was not easy for him.

CRAZY CHEMISTRY

If you’ve seen trailers or posters from the show, then you know that one of the main selling points is the team up between Ryu Su Yeol and K and that is for good reason. Two of some of the biggest actors right now are coming together for the first time to give a truly captivating team up. On one hand, the pair can be at loggerheads with one another. And on the other hand, they can be fighting side-by-side for justice.

One of the main plot lines of the show is how Su Yeol and K will go from allies who don’t trust each other to in-sync teammates. They are polar opposites of one another, yet strangely, they also complement each other in a way. The fireworks to come from these two have us excited. The bromance between Lee Dong Wook and Wi Ha Joon is something we weren’t expecting but are absolutely here for. They look like they are going to give us the chaotic energy fitting for the end of 2021.

INTENSE ACTION

Bad and Crazy won’t just be procedural cop drama. It will also have action scenes set to enthrall viewers. From hand-to-hand combat, exciting chase scenes, and thrilling joy rides on K’s motorcycle, the series won’t come up short with exhilarating large-scale action scenes. Wi Ha Joon has already proven himself to be a more than capable action star (see Midnight or Shark: The Beginning) so it will be exciting to see him flex his action muscles more. Han Ji Eun even half-jokingly revealed that when she was in training, she asked if she become like Wi Ha Joon. The series director, Yoo Sun Dong, is also no stranger to action with his most recent drama being the action-fantasy The Uncanny Encounter.

IT’S MORE THAN JUST A COP SHOW

While the heart of Bad and Crazy will revolve around a tale of crime, suspense, and vengeance in an insane society, that doesn’t mean the show won’t spice it up here and there. The show is set to weave together themes of including action, dark comedy, suspense and crime. One scene can be a high-speed motorcycle chase and the next will be a detective storyline. You will get action, but also expect comedic scenes with a dark twist. In fact, this is one of the reasons why Cha Hak Yeon is looking forward to the series, because of its diverse themes and plot points.

Bad and Crazy premieres it’s first episode on Friday, December 17th at 9:50PM exclusively on iQiyi.  New episodes of the 12-episode series is set to air every Friday and Saturday.
