Born in 1996, Jennie Kim’s Met Gala 2023 look was from Chanel Fall/Winter 1990. That makes the dress almost a decade older than her.
One of the most hotly-anticipated red carpet debuts at the Met Gala was Blackpink’s Jennie Kim, and for good reason. The fashion night out’s theme was dedicated to the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who helmed Chanel from 1983 until his death in 2019. Jennie Kim attending the Met Gala in 2023 for the first time is a bit of a shocker when you think about how she lives, breathes, and sleeps in Chanel and how she was one of Karl Lagerfeld’s last hand-picked muses. Nevertheless, she earned her seat at the table and boy, did she kill the red carpet. How’s that for a first?
One can argue that 90s Chanel is still undefeated with the numerous classic looks that Karl Lagerfeld has produced. No wonder Jennie Kim dug deep in their treasure trove of archival looks for her first Met Gala. For her 2023 red carpet debut, she wore a recreation of the white mini dress as seen in look 164 of Chanel’s Fall/Winter 1990 runway collection. The camelia has been one of their popular motifs and Jennie’s look is the human embodiment of the dainty flower with a black ribbon tied on her bodice and pinned on her hair. Karl and Coco would’ve been proud.
Jennie Kim isn’t the first Blackpink member to have graced the Met Gala though. Last year, Rosé was invited and dressed by Saint Laurent along with its creative director, Anthony Vaccarello. She even gave Jennie some advice and said, “Rosie was here last year and said, ‘Go and have fun!’” And that folks is the reason why she’s called the “Human Chanel.”
