If there’s one thing you can expect from multi-hyphenate star Bretman Rock, it’s that he’s always going to keep it 100. The Filipino digital darling isn’t afraid to speak his mind, get vulnerable, or live his truth. But if you thought that Bretman couldn’t get any more real, you thought wrong, because the singer, songwriter, actor, actress, athlete, activist, scientist on the side, the star of the crystal of the day, a coconut water connoisseur, mascara master, cereal critic, the newest MTV reality star, commercial model, and newest botanist in town is about to add author to his growing resume with the upcoming launch of his first-ever memoir.
DA BADDEST AUTHOR
On October 4, Bretman Rock revealed to the world a special project he’s been working on for the past couple of years now, his first memoir. And true to Bretman’s style, it has the appropriate title: You’re That Bitch & Other Cute Lessons About Being Unapologetically Yourself. The upcoming book sees Bretman peel back layers of himself he rarely shows to the world as he opens up about his life, growing up in the Philippines, being an immigrant, his love life, and much more. As proof of that, he even used his full name as the author’s name, Bretman Rock Sacayanan.
As shared by the memoir’s publisher HarperCollins, expect a book to go there told through Bretman’s signature energy. “Hilarious and earnest, this collection of essays, how-tos, and never-before-seen photos goes far beyond what we know of Bretman Rock from social media. Who is Bretman Rock Sacayanan behind the screen and how did he become the original superstar influencer and today’s beloved best friend of the internet? From the funniest and undeniably cutest person on the internet, this is a book for the weirdos and the bad bitches . . . this book is for you!”
When it comes to expressing themselves and opening up to the world, a memoir isn’t usually the first place young people go to. But writing and reading continues to prove important mediums for people to tell their stories. Jennette McCurdy’s recently released memoir, i’m glad my mom died, got the Gen Z to read as the former Nickelodeon star vulnerably let the world know her strained relationship with her mom and how hard her childhood was.
When Bretman’s first book drops, we have a feeling we aren’t putting it down.
ALL SIDES TO BRETMAN ROCK
If you want a taste of what You’re That Bitch has to offer, Cosmopolitan US exclusively published an excerpt that sets the vibe for a book that’s equal parts personal and a self-help guide. “For the last eight years, I’ve shared so much of myself on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. But on social media I’m a curated brand—I don’t have time to show off my full self or to explain who I really am in addition to the jokes and glamour.”
“So, you probably know Bretman Rock the comedian and extrovert who pole dances and calls everybody “bitch,” but you don’t really don’t know Bretman Sacayanan. These Bretmans are two different people, but they are both 1,000 percent me. And we’ve both lived lifetimes already. The essays you’re about to read are totally fresh, sort of like my mom’s vagina shampoo but even more tingly—they’re about being a queer first-generation Asian immigrant, who just happens to be Da Baddest content creator of all time.”
He continues, “You’re That Bitch reflects all sides of me: I am Bretman Rock, the entertainer and an extrovert, but sometimes I also just wanna be Bretman Sacayanan in my crop top and shorts, eating my chicken unbothered. I’m just an ordinary gorl— at the same time, I’m also that bitch every minute, meaning I’m always authentically me. [L]ike my videos and my mind, my book is organized chaos, visually gorgeous (of courz), and packed with essays, anecdotes, journal entries, and advice from my life that I want to pass on to you. Give me any topic, and I’ll tell you a funny story in the way only I can. But bitch, my stories also have depth.”
“At the end of the day, I’m thankful for every day and every chance I get to share my light with the world— whichever facet of Bretman might be shining brightest at any given moment. So even if you’re not also a genderqueer Asian influencer, I think you’ll relate to my stories. These essays are about not fitting in but learning how to not give a fux, how to exude effortless confidence and win people over with charm and humor, being authentic and original, and turning your fantasies into reality the Bretman Rock way—that is, doing the least while looking the most. I want you to learn how to stop and smell the flowers and just realize: Wow, I’m that bitch too.”
Bretman isn’t the first star or social media creator to enter the world of the celebrity memoir. But knowing how he is, this book will be anything but boring. You’re That Bitch drops just in time for Valentine’s Day 2023 on February 14, 2023. You can pre-order a copy here.
