As far back as when it used to be called Musically, TikTok has always had music intertwined in its DNA. The TikTok experience wouldn’t be complete without music to the point where the platform can help launch people’s careers. While trends come and go, TikTok’s inherent ability to make any song go viral stays consistent. And that trait was seen on more than one occasion this past 2022 as the year saw many songs, most of which were released years ago, suddenly find a new audience on the platform. Let’s take a look at some of the tracks that were given new life thanks to TikTok.

TRIP LANG – SHEHYEE AND SAM PINTO

In early 2022, a trend was sweeping TikTok that had users post their moments when life hit them with that unexpected plot twist. And soundtracking these twists and turns was Trip Lang by Shehyee and Sam Pinto. The upbeat jam was released nearly a decade ago yet saw itself enter the zeitgeist as it was featured in hundreds of thousands of videos. But given Sam’s uber-catchy part, we aren’t that surprised it became a user favorite. To date, the song has been used in over 1.3 million videos on TikTok.

BLOODY MARY- LADY GAGA

Anyone who was there when Lady Gaga first dropped her Born This Way album in 2011 knows just how much of a bop Bloody Mary is. A criminally underrated fan favorite, all it took was eleven years and a Wednesday Addams series for the track to finally hit the mainstream.

In particular, an edit of Wednesday’s viral dance scene mixed with a sped-up version of Bloody Mary blew up on TikTok and became a runaway success to the tune of millions streams on Spotify. Even Lady Gaga has recognized the viral nature of the song and danced to it herself. The fact that the song isn’t even featured in the actual scene makes the whole thing even better.

MULI – ACE BANZUELO

Before mid-2022, Ace Banzuelo was mostly known in OPM circles as a talented singer, songwriter, and producer. But the year would hit him with a plot twist with his 2020 track Muli suddenly going viral on TikTok. Just like that, Muli, which at best was just a mid-sized hit, was suddenly receiving millions of streams and got its own equally viral music video starring none other than Francine Diaz and Seth Fedelin. While Muli is a sad song, Ace must be happy given how his old track suddenly became one of the biggest OPM hits of 2022.

DIWATA – SAM CONCEPTION

If you were scrolling on TikTok this past year, chances are you heard Sam Concepcion’s Diwata in at least one video. The catchy funk-pop track was everywhere in 2022, ultimately becoming the third most-used song on TikTok in the past year. The song has taken such a life of its own that you may have not realized that Diwata was initially released in 2021 as part of the Miss Universe Philippines 2021 OST. It just needed a few months for one of Sam’s biggest hits to date to really shine.

COOL FOR THE SUMMER – DEMI LOVATO

While Demi may currently be in their rock era, we will always have their pop hits to cherish. And one such hit is their 2015 single Cool For The Summer. They really snapped when making the song because it slaps in all the right places. And while it didn’t exactly blow up the charts back in 2015, it did have its breakthrough moment in 2022. The sapphic-inspired track, and its sped-up version, became everyone’s favorite song for a while on TikTok where it took on a life on its own with a viral dance challenge. Demi even officially released the sped-up version in recognition of how well the song was doing.

COME INSIDE OF MY HEART – IV OF SPADES

While the probability of a IV Of Spades’ musical comeback has yet to be announced, we still have their old jams to bop to. And one of their bangers that saw new life in 2022 was Come Inside Of My Heart. While the upbeat love song was a favorite from their 2019 CLAPCLAPCLAP! album, it was on TikTok this past year where the song got a whole new generation of listener. Even LE SSERAFIM’s Yunjin is a fan. It went viral on TikTok where a mash-up of the song with Rex Orange County’s THE SHADE proved particularly popular.

SHINUNOGA E-WA – FUJII KAZE

Quite a handful of Japanese tracks went viral on TikTok in 2022. One of the biggest was Fujii Kaze’s Shinunoga E-Wa. The love song about wanting to die rather than losing your girl was initially included in his 2020 album HELP EVER HURT NEVER. But it took two years for the track to jump into the mainstream when it went viral on TikTok and helped put the young Japanese singer on the map for many.

FALLEN – LOLA AMOUR

Filipinos adore sweet love songs. So, it was only a matter of time before Lola Amour’s Fallen would find an audience. And that time came in 2022, one year after its release when the song became a favorite on TikTok and quickly became one of Lola Amour’s biggest songs to date. It’s clear that a lot of people have fallen over Fallen. It’s a song that just naturally lends itself to soundtracking wholesome moments.

NO – MEGHAN TRAINOR

Meghan Trainor had a bit of a resurgence in 2022, particularly on TikTok. If she’s not scoring hits like Made You Look or making TikToks with her bestie Chris Olsen, Meghan is having her old tracks go viral on the platform. And one that you probably know of is No which was released all the way back in 2017 as the lead single off her Thank You album. The track isn’t called untouchable, but that was the part that made the rounds on TikTok thanks to a viral dance challenge. It also did particularly well in K-pop TikTok thanks to idols like aespa’s Ningning and NCT’s Haechan.
