Lapis and proud.

Our Pinoy senses recently went off when Lapillus revealed their official fandom name. And let’s just say we love being pencils.

When it comes to the world of K-pop, the name groups and artists give their fans is one of the most important decisions they will ever make. Not only does the official fandom name further solidify the relationship fans have with their fave idols, but it also becomes synonymous with the idols themselves. BTS has ARMY, BLACKPINK has BLINKs, TWICE has ONCEs, SEVENTEEN has Carats, NCT has NCTzens, and so on. Needless to say, it’s a decision many groups think long and hard for. So, when rookie K-pop girl group Lapillus finally revealed their official fandom name, what did they choose? In a moment that felt too good to be true, it was Lapis.

LAPILLUS WITH THEIR LAPIS

An Image of Lapillus

To most fans, Lapillus using Lapis as their fandom name is nothing wrong. It comes from lapis lazuli, the deep-blue rock and semi-precious stone that serves as one of the inspirations for Lapillus’ name. It’s goes without saying that their fans are gems. But to Filipino fans, the name Lapis hits differently because, in Tagalog, lapis means pencil.

What makes this even better is that member Chanty is Filipino, so the meta humor is on a whole other level. We can already picture how chaotic it would be when Lapillus comes back to the Philippines for a concert or fan meet and calls their fans lapis.

For the past few months, Lapillus and their management have been asking fans to submit suggestions for their fandom name. As a half-joke, some Filipino fans submitted the name lapis, both because it sounds similar to the group name and its meaning in Tagalog. It seems though that MLD Entertainment didn’t see it that way and made Lapis the official fandom name. And as you can expect, Chanty had a field day with the fandom name and light-heartedly chided Filipino fans who wanted it saying, “[G]inusto nyo yan haha.”

PENCILS FOR LAPILLUS

For those who are wondering if they’re actually serious with the name, they are. During a recent fansign, Chanty shared with a fan that it is confirmed to be official, but clarified that it’s meant to reference the gemstone. (Of course, Filipino fans will always think of it differently.) It’s amazing to think that what initially started as a joke among Tagalog-speaking fans became true to life. That’s the power of manifestation right there.

If there is an award for the best fandom name of 2022, Lapis would be in the running. At this point, Lapillus’ official light stick better be a pencil where the eraser part lights up. Once again, Pinoy culture finds its way into Lapillus, and we don’t mind. Needless to say, Lapis is a fandom name we won’t be forgetting anytime soon. Stationery items unite!
