Who doesn’t love a good reunion? Over the past years, we saw some highly anticipated coming togethers from some of the biggest shows and movies ever such as the Friends and the Harry Potter cast reunion. It very much feels great seeing these icons we loved watching when we were younger reunite and reminisce. And for those who grew up watching the Disney Channel, then you probably remember seeing the phenom that was High School Musical.

Bursting onto the scene in 2006, the series was an instant hit and quickly became part of the cultural zeitgeist. Ever since the movie series ended with Senior Year in 2008, we’ve only seen the cast reunite once in-person in 2016 when Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Gabriel, Corbin Bleu, and Monique Coleman came together to film a special for the 10th anniversary of the original film. And while that was nice, not everyone, most notably Zac Efron was part of it. But that will soon change thanks to the new season of High School Musical: The Musical – The Series.

During Disney’s recent D23 Expo, among the flurry of news the company made was the fact that the series was getting renewed for a fourth season. With that also came the attention-grabbing official plot synopsis. In case you didn’t know, HSM: TM – TS is set in a world where they know that High School Musical is movie. Every season, the main cast of kids perform a musical and for season four, that musical will be High School Musical 3: Senior Year. While that in itself is interesting, it gets even better.

The students learn that the producers are currently filming High School Musical 4: The Reunion Movie and they chose their school as the setting. As such, the students are told that they can be featured extras in the film. If all of this sounds very meta, that because it is. But what’s important is that the season’s plot involves a reunion movie of the original High School Musical. This is the kind of movie fans have been asking for years, so this meta movie is probably the show’s way of recognizing that.

Obviously, a “reunion movie” means appearances from the OG cast. It should be noted that some of the original cast, most notably KayCee Stroh, Lucas Gabriel, and Corbin Bleu, have all appeared in the show where they played themselves. There’s also the fact that Vanessa Hudgens and Zack Efron got the internet talking when they shared that they visited the original set of High School Musical. We’re those teases clues that this reunion was coming? We hope so.

So far, Disney has confirmed that Monique Coleman, Alyson Reed, Bart Johnson, Corbin Bleu, Kaycee Stroh, and Lucas Gabriel are all set to appear in the upcoming season. No word yet on when the big three, Zack, Vanessa, and Ashley Tisdale will be returning. But regardless, we’ll be waiting with anticipation for this childhood dream come true.
