It’s been three years since we last saw Enrique Gil act on TV and four years since he graced the silver screen. So, following his contract renewal with ABS-CBN back in April, it seems that we are due for a Quen acting comeback. And that time has finally come when he and ABS recently announced that Enrique would be making a return to the spotlight with a new movie. But it isn’t just any old film, but one of his most creatively exciting and ambitious yet as Enrique is coming back with a bang (literally). Here’s what you need to know about the actor’s comeback film project.

THE STORY

Enrique is set to star in I Am Not Big Bird, a delayed coming-of-age irreverent comedy. Set in 2000s Bangkok, the film follows Luis Carpio, who travels to the capital city of Thailand and gets mistaken for a famous porn star called Big Bird. As for what happens next, we’ll have to wait and see. The filmmakers behind this project have described the movie as one that combines humor with reality, with Enrique adding that he envisions his comeback project to make the mark not just locally, but overseas as well.

As for why Enrique went with a film like this for his comeback project, he shared that he wanted a project that was creatively different from what he has done in the past. Coming together to make this vision a reality is an assortment of production houses such as Black Sheep, ANIMA Studios, and Epicmedia. Considering how the last time Enrique worked with Black Sheep was for 2019’s Alone/Together, we’re excited to see how the movie breaks barriers even further.

CAST AND CREW

Joining Enrique in the movie as his co-stars will be Red Ollero, Nikko Natividad, and Pepe Herrera. Victor Villanueva, who directed the acclaimed Patay Na Si Hesus and digital series Beach Bros, will serve as the film’s director. Penning the script, meanwhile, will be Palanca Awardee for Best Screenplay Lilit Reyes, who wrote the screenplay for award-winning films Changing Partners and Water Lemon. They really are bringing out all the stops for this one.

HANDS-ON ENRIQUE

Enrique Gil is no stranger to the entertainment industry. But what makes I Am Not Big Bird special is that the actor takes a more hands-on approach to the project. Case in point, Enrique’s production company, Make-a-Break Productions, is coming on board the project, making him a producer on the film. He’s also had a hand in other creative aspects of the movie, such as choosing his co-stars and tweaking his lines.

FILMING IN THAILAND

Given the film’s setting, the cast and crew are set to film the project in Thailand later this year. Overseas movie for Enrique’s comeback role? We know that’s right.

RELEASE DATE

While the film doesn’t have a concrete release date yet, it is confirmed to be released locally this year. The producers also shared that they plan on sending the movie to international festivals for screenings in 2024.
