For years, YouTube has been the go-to for many looking to get their daily dose of video content, learn something new, or just pass the time. Especially with the emergence of the pandemic, more people have been spending more time indoors and YouTube has been a constant companion. This 2021, while we are still dealing with a pandemic, the world has started to reopen once again and society as a whole is learning to adjust to a “new” normal. So, for Filipino YouTube users, what videos and content did they consume during the year? Well, according to Google, most Filipino users love watching personality-based content with a cadre of vloggers entering YouTube Philippines’ year-end charts.
IVANA ALAWI ON TOP ONCE AGAIN
Out of all the creators and channels on YouTube PH, Ivana Alawi emerged as the biggest winner of the year. She was the top local content creator of the year, the same feat she achieved last year. Meanwhile, her video where she pranks her mom then gives her a new car was ranked 5th in the top 10 trending videos on YouTube PH. While most people may have started to follow Ivana for her looks following her viral video in 2019, she has since made a name for herself for her feel-good content.
If she isn’t pranking someone, she’s helping the less fortunate through acts of kindness. All this has helped her reach over 14.5 million subscribers and counting. Keeping it in the family, her brother, Hash, also makes it on the list at 9th. In fact, he was named the top breakout local creator of the year as he amassed around 1.83 million subscribers since starting his own channel nine months ago.
VLOGGERS AND CELEBS DOMINATE THE CHARTS
Followed behind Ivana is vlogger Zeinab Harake who ranked the second biggest local creator of 2021. Alex and Toni Gonzaga are ranked 3rd and 4th respectively while Donnalyn Bartolome is fifth. Alex, Zeinab, and Donnalyn are all actually part of the top trending video of YouTube Philippines in 2021 as they were all in Alex’s parody of Four Sisters and a Wedding, Four Sister and a Welding. Zeinab and Donnalyn also have one video each on the top trending list with Zeinab’s at second and Donnalyn’s at third. The other trending videos that got people talking this year came from Mygz Molino, Mommy Tony Fowler, Cong TV, Star Cinema, Tasty Plus, and Chixmiss.
Rounding out the top creators of the year are Vice Ganda, rapper Skusta Clee, Mika Salamanca, and YouTube PH OG Cong TV. As for the top breakout creators of the year, Wilbert Tolentino is at number two, followed by Boy Tapang and Andrea Brillantes. The list is rounded out by MPL Philippines, AJ Raval, Herlene Hipon, Mygz Molino, Bonoy and Pinty Gonzaga (the parents of Toni and Alex), and Luis Manzano.
OPM AND K-POP WERE THE LOCAL FAVORITES
When it came to the most viewed music videos in the country this year, OPM hits beat out juggernauts from K-pop to take the top spots. At number one is Skusta Clee’s heartfelt ode to his child Lagi, followed by SB19’s MAPA and Ex Battalion’s Yearly. Interestingly, at number four is Arthur Miguel’s excellent cover of Crazier by Taylor Swift. It’s the only cover to make it on the list.
BTS’s Butter is at sixth. Silk Sonic’s Leave The Door Open, Bella Poarch’s Build a B*tch, and Moira Dela Torre’s Pabuya follow. Zack Tabudlo’s Binibini was the most streamed song on Spotify PH this year and its music video was the ninth most watched on YouTube in the country. BTS rounds out the list with Permission To Dance at ten. With this, they are the only K-pop act and only act with two songs to make it on the top 10.
