“In this film, [we try to answer] how can you balance career and love,” shares Julia in the movie’s media announcement. “With love, we don’t know when and how to stop.” It will be written and directed by Irene Villamor, who previously helmed Ulan, Sid & Aya, and her last feature film, Ikaw at Ako at ang Ending.

“My movies are about strangers meeting. Hindi natin nakikita yung relationship,” shares direk Irene Villamor. “Ngayon, nag-dwell ako sa relationship. Gaano ka-complicated? Gaano ka hirap? Gaano ka sarap? Kaya siya five breakups. Try nating manakit ng limang beses.” Welp, are you guys ready for it? It’s also confirmed that Five Break-Ups will be set in Singapore and Bonifacio Global City.

Five Break-Ups and a Romance marks the first time GMA Pictures will work with Cornerstone Entertainment’s production arm Cornerstone Studios. This is also the first film project for Alden Richards’ multimedia outfit MYRIAD Corporation, which was behind the The Eraserheads reunion concert last year. Former Star Cinema Managing Director Malou N. Santos is also involved in the project and will serve as a creative consultant.

NEW ROLE FOR ALDEN

This project also marks Alden Richards’ big-screen comeback four years after the blockbuster romantic drama Hello, Love, Goodbye, which also saw Alden in a historic pairing with Kathryn Bernardo. Regarding his character in Five Break-Ups and a Romance, Alden further reveals it is something that he’s never done before.

“Ang safe ko kasi with the roles that I play, ayaw ko nang maging safe,” shares Alden. “It’s about time, I’m not getting any younger with roles. ‘Yung being not safe doesn’t necessarily mean na go all-out. Being not safe anymore means [breaking] out of the usual.” He adds that he’s got a much bad-boy attitude in this movie that people have never seen him play before.

ON-SCREEN CHEMISTRY

While Five Break-Ups and a Romance is still in production and has only had two shooting days so far, Alden Richards and Julia Montes’ effortless connection in their interviews together is undeniable. Even direk Irene couldn’t help but share how she’s satisfied by the duo’s fresh pairing. “First reading pa lang namin, ang saya ko na,” she says.

“Isa siya sa mga leading ladies so far, by far, na unang meeting pa lang, wala nang pretensions. Naramdaman mo na yung sincerity,” says Alden. Julia, on the other hand, is struck by Alden’s kindness. “Nagulat ako, hindi na ko magkukunwari. I’m honored and happy to work with him.”

It’s heartwarming to know that even if this is the first time that Alden and Julia will work together in a project, it’s obvious how the two seem to have already developed a special rapport; something that is exciting to see translated on the big screen.
