It’s getting more and more difficult to accept the common sentiment that typhoon-caused disasters are just “natural” disasters (they are, scientifically, not), what with the growing evidence and understanding that the effects of climate change are worsening and a lot of our actions as a society as well as lacking government systems are very real causes of all this loss and damage.
From pollution to poor urban planning, our cities are ill-equipped to withstand intensifying storms and the changing climate, and it’s getting clearer that stronger prevention and mitigation measures need to be put in place. Governments and systems are in place precisely to address the situations and struggles of the people, and they must also be held accountable for calamities and destruction caused. But typhoon after typhoon, what seems to get better?
As of now, the Marikina River water level is at 3rd Alarm 18 metres high. Please take the measurements for your own safety and immediate evacuation is necessary. Be vigilant in this situation.#Blankets #CarinaPH pic.twitter.com/kCb03nwlAE

But for now, as has been the case, we’re in this together. It’s long been proven that we are open and willing to help each other when in need. As super typhoon Carina (or Gaemi) exits the Philippine Area of Responsibility, the devastation it left in its wake has affected vulnerable communities, people, homes, and livelihoods. These disasters are proof of why we need stronger calls for climate justice and action, and why world leaders and governments need to listen and act accordingly.
As it stands, if you’d like to help out fellow Filipinos affected by the storm and floods, below is a list of foundations and organizations accepting donations for victims of Typhoon Carina, from monetary to in kind. These are trusted organizations, some aiming to benefit different sectors such as PUV drivers and pets and pet owners. Feel free to help out wherever and however you can. Keep an eye out on hashtags on social media like #CarinaPH, #RescuePH, and #ReliefPH, as well.
