Back To The Future: These Beauty Trends Are Coming Back Better Than Ever This 2023

“I’m always changing…” - Julia Fox

Just like many of you, we just got back from the beauty time machine. And if our calculations are correct, it’s all about re-imagining the past with these beauty trends moving forward.

Last year, beauty on and off the runway consisted of bare makeup, cutthroat liner, over-the-top lashes and nails, and so much more. As we move into 2023, the beauty industry is continuing to evolve and change. One theme that sticks out the most is the revival of classic techniques reimagined with a futuristic approach. This means the beauty rage is all about embracing the odd, experimenting, mixing and matching different styles to make that statement.

Based on the spring/summer 2023 runway, we can expect shimmery eyeshadows and statement lashes, latex-like lips, hyper-gleaming skin, a resurgence of 80s and 90s nostalgia and so much more. (Only time will tell what we have yet to discover in the upcoming months.) From bold and colorful makeup looks to natural and sustainable products, there are a variety of trends that are expected to take over the year.

SOFT-GOTH MAKEUP

Soft-goth makeup is characterized by its dark, seductive, and alluring look, often featuring bold and smoky eyes, dark lipstick, and a strong contour. One of the key elements of soft-goth makeup is the use of bold and smoky eyes.

This is achieved by using dark eyeshadows and eyeliner, and often features a mix of matte and shimmery finishes. The bold eyes are typically paired with dark lipstick, such as deep reds, purples, and plums, which add to the seductive and alluring feel of the look.

Another key element is the use of strong contouring. This is achieved by using cool-toned shades to define the cheekbones, jawline, and nose, giving the face a more chiseled and defined look. A great example of this is model Siobhan Moylan’s mug by professional makeup artist Raffy So

GALACTIC GLAM

Miss sparkling? Galactic glam is here, and we are here for it. The use of metallic, chromatic, and iridescent finishes often paired with bold eyeliner or star graphics and mascara create a cosmic, otherworldly look, which can be worn in a subtle way or in a bold and dramatic approach, depending on the occasion and personal preference.

Depending on the products used, the glittery finish can reflect light and create a multidimensional effect as seen on Beauty TikTokers Pat Cortez and August

SKIN IS STILL IN

Gone are the days where glam meant heavy and full coverage base makeup. Makeup artists and enthusiasts are carrying over skin-centric products from last year. This approach to makeup focuses on enhancing natural features, rather than covering them up. The goal is to create a polished, yet natural look that highlights one’s unique beauty.

Everyone is encouraged to embrace their natural beauty. Tints, concealers, and foundations mixed with skin-loving ingredients can be seen used behind the scenes on runways like Prada, and much more. However, it’s important to note that bare face makeup is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Some people may prefer a more polished look, while others may prefer a more natural look. It’s all about finding the right balance for you and your personal style.

YEAR OF THE BROWS

Last year, we saw the explosion of laminated and bleached brows. For 2023, we’re stepping out of our comfort zones with experimental looks. Ghost brows and thin brows are the latest trend in the beauty industry, which have been gaining popularity among makeup enthusiasts and beauty influencers. This technique involves filling in the eyebrows with a very light shade of pencil or powder, giving them a barely-there, translucent look.

Inspired by stars from the 90s, thin brows, on the other hand, involve creating a slimmer and more defined brow shape, often using a brow pencil or a brow gel. Pair this with the soft grunge look and your mug is complete.
